They Are Missed:
In 2004, Carl Wayne the singer with The Move died from cancer. They had the 1969 UK #1 single "Blackberry Way." Wayne also worked with The Hollies.
In 2007, Hilly Kristal, founder of the New York punk club CBGB, died from complications arising from lung cancer at the age of 75. Kristal was credited with discovering Patti Smith and The Ramones and his club became a breeding ground for punk rock. The New York City venue, whose full title CBGB OMFUG stood for 'country, bluegrass, blues and other music for uplifting gourmandisers', was originally launched to showcase country music. Hmmm country music or punk....I'll take punk anyday...
History:
The top 10 songs in the UK singles chart in 1956 were all by American artists including Elvis Presley, The Platters, Doris Day, Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers and Gogi Grant. An American invasion?

Also in 1963, the Ronettes first entered the US singles chart with "Be My Baby" the girl group’s only top 10 hit. Lead singer, Veronica Bennett who became Ronnie Spector, took producer and ex-husband Phil Spector to court in the late 1990s for unpaid royalties.

The final episode of the Partridge Family aired on ABC-TV in 1974.
Rod Stewart and the Faces, Loggins & Messina, Fleetwood Mac and Lynyrd Skynyrd all appeared at Balboa Stadium, San Diego, California in 1975. I'da skipped Loggins & Messina.....
In 1976, George Harrison was found guilty of 'subconscious plagiarism' of the Ronnie Mack song "He's So Fine" when writing "My Sweet Lord." Earnings from the song were awarded to Mack's estate; The Chiffons then recorded their own version of "My Sweet Lord." Interesting and I did find the music on YouTube.....

In 1984, 'Purple Rain' the movie-starring Prince opened at cinemas across the UK with special late night previews.

In 2002, NASA announced that Lance Bass, singer with *NSYNC, was to become the first celebrity astronaut. His $23.8 million, place on a Russian Soyuz module would make him the youngest person at 23 years of age to go into orbit. Bass ended up not taking part in the flight after failing to pay for his $20 million ticket on the craft.

In 2004, UK medical magazine Thorax issued a warning to music fans saying that listening to loud music in the car can give you a collapsed lung. One 19 year-old had been treated in Bristol after his left lung collapsed as his 1,000-watt bass box boomed out in his Fiat Panda.
In 2005, Toby Keith announced that he was starting his own label named Show Dog Nashville Records.

In 2006, The Times ran a story on the demands of rock stars when on tour. Ozzy Osbourne insists on an eye, ear, nose and throat doctor at each venue. The Beach Boys require a licensed masseur, Meat Loaf a mask and one small tank of oxygen. David Bowie requests that the dressing room temperature is between 14c and 18c and Paul McCartney must have a large arrangement of white Casablanca lilies in his dressing room. Mick Jagger must have an onstage autocue with the lyrics to all the songs, it would also tell him the name of the city in which they were performing. And all I want are brown M&M's!!

Bruce Springsteen performed at Harley-Davidson's 105th Anniversary Celebration in Milwaukee in 2008. The show culminates with a cover of Steppenwolf's "Born To Be Wild." Perfect and much, much better than the 'surprise' guest Elton's John a few years back....

Waits Live In Ten Cities
by Michael Fremer
If you go for Waits’s “Louis Armstrong meets Screamin’ Jay Hawkins meets Captain Beefheart” blues/jazzbo thing, obtaining it live or recorded live is probably as pure as it gets and arguably the best way to consume an artist energized by the crowd’s adulation and an adept touring backup band capable of creating thick, churning atmospherics.
Waits inhabits a mythical 50’s waterfront circus tent filled with sailors, longshoremen, midgets and freaks. He’s part Kurt Weill and part Tod Browning. And part Vaudeville and Tin Pin Alley too. His fans eat it up on this set recorded during his sold out “Glitter and Doom” international tour.
He sings movies on stage here backed by a superb band capable of painting effervescent backdrops that break free of the instrumental confines and spring to life. I don’t how he puts his throat though such torture and comes out singing on the other side.
He abandons the deep growl occasionally to reveal a rich upper register and certain vibrato unharmed by the clenched throat antics. On “I’ll Shoot the Moon,” he manages to hit the high parts, descend into the deepest two-dimensional gravel (sometimes sounding like Robbie Robertson) and come up sounding like Bert Lahr!
He’s part field hand, part city slicker, part Mr. Sincerity and part bullshit shtick seller. Sometimes it sounds as if he’s just doing a cutting Bruce Springsteen parody, as on “Falling Down.” Of course Springsteen appropriately covered Wait’s “Jersey Girl” originally on his 1980 release Heartattack and Vine.
Waits combines the over the top impish humor and occasional darkness with heartbreaking sincerity as on the tender closer “Some Lucky Day.” If you want to hear Waits at his heartbreaking best though, listen to “Day After Tomorrow” from Real Gone.
The double live album was culled from performances recorded in Tulsa, Atlanta, Knoxville, Jacksonville, Milan, Edinburgh, Dublin and Paris. Call me prejudiced but I simply don’t think of Tulsa when I think of Tom Waits.
Waits is “an acquired taste” as they say about over the top artists. He sounds as if he’s burping up the songs as much as he’s singing them and the sense that he’s goofing all of it occasionally finds its way to the surface. He’s certainly having fun and the audience is too. His rap about buying Henry Ford’s last breath on Ebay is hilarious.
The sound is consistently cavernous, dark and echo-y, as if the band is playing at the back of the stage and you’re sitting near the back of the room. There’s not much air and not much sparkle and while that may be because of technical limitations, the sonics are perfectly suited to the subject matter, though even the hand claps sound thick.
I’m sure this was recorded on a computer, hopefully at high resolution and transferred to lacquer from those files. Given the wide range of venues, the sound is remarkably consistent, though “audiophile quality” it’s not. For that go back to the superlative Small Change album recorded live to two track analog by either Wally Heider or Bones Howe. I can't say which because I've misplaced my original promo copy. Damn. Where’s the all-analog reissue of that gem?

Company presses your ashes into vinyl when you die
Music lovers can now be immortalised when they die by having their ashes baked into vinyl records to leave behind for loved ones.
A UK company called And Vinyly is offering people the chance to press their ashes in a vinyl recording of their own voice, their favourite tunes or their last will and testament. Minimalist audiophiles might want to go for the simple option of having no tunes or voiceover, and simply pressing the ashes into the vinyl to result in pops and crackles.
The company was founded by Jason Leach, who co-founded the techno group and record label Subhead in the 1990s and has since founded a number of other labels, including House of Fix, Daftwerk and Death to Vinyl.
Leach explained to Wired.co.uk that there were a number of factors that made him launch the service, including thinking that he was “getting a bit old” and “might not be invincible”. His mother also started working at a funeral directors, which brought the whole funeral process closer to home. A third prompt was when he saw a TV programme that showed someone in America putting their ashes into fireworks, which made him think about how he might want to be remembered. And, he says, “It’s a bit more interesting than being in a pot on a shelf.”
How does it work?
The process of setting human ashes into vinyl involves a very understanding pressing plant. Basically the ashes must be sprinkled onto the raw piece of vinyl (known as a “biscuit” or “puck”) before it is pressed by the plates. This means that when the plates exert their pressure on the vinyl in order to create the grooves, the ashes are pressed into the record.
The site has a very irreverent style and operates under the strapline "live on from beyond the groove". One of Leach’s family stories, he tells Wired.co.uk, suggests why he has a practical attitude to people’s ashes.
He explains how he went out on a boat with his family members to sprinkle the ashes of his grandfather into the sea. His uncle “released them on the wrong side of the boat and so the ashes went all over us." Apparently the same thing happened to his father, too!
And Vinyly also offers personalised RIV (Rest In Vinyl) artwork -- the simple version just carries your name and your life span, or you can have your portrait painted by artist James Hague, using your ashes mixed into the paint.
The basic package costs £2,000 and comprises of the standard artwork along with up to 30 ash-flecked discs with whatever sounds you choose, lasting a maximum of 24 minutes.
Extras include "Bespook Music", where artists from The House of Fix and www.daftwerk.com write a song especially for you and global distribution of your record in vinyl stores.
The main challenge is choosing the music. Leach says: “It’s difficult to think of what to put on your record because you want it to be the best album you can imagine.”
What would he have on his own record? “I would definitely have a recording of my own voice as well as some 'sound photos' of places that are important to me and then I would have some of my own music on there. It’s something I’m working on.”

They Are Missed:
In 1967, British music entrepreneur and the manager of The Beatles Brian Epstein was found dead, locked in a bedroom at his London home. A coroner's inquest concluded that Epstein died from an overdose of the sleeping pill Carbitrol. He also managed several other artists including Gerry & The Pacemakers, Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, Cilla Black and The Remo Four. The first contract between The Beatles and Epstein was auctioned in London in 2008, and was sold for $370,000.
In 1990, Stevie Ray Vaughan was killed when the helicopter he was flying in, hit a man-made ski slope while trying to navigate through dense fog. Vaughn had played a show at Alpine Valley Music Theatre, East Troy, Wisconsin with Robert Cray & His Memphis Horns, and Eric Clapton. Vaughan was informed by a member of Clapton's crew that three seats were open on a helicopter returning to Chicago with Clapton's crew, it turned out there was only one seat left; Vaughan requested it from his brother, who obliged. Three members of Eric Clapton's entourage were also killed. In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Stevie Ray Vaughan #7 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitarist's of all time. No One, I Mean No One, played the guitar like SRV!
R.I.P Mr. Vaughan. We're not worthy!

“Working their way up to art rock legacy” – Rolling Stone
“Bands that do what they want to do because they believe in it – and trust the intelligence of their listeners – are the future. That is the brave new world of Liars” – Los Angeles Times
“Like a Mayan maze of sonic and lyrical ambiguity that pummels and cajoles... while darting jittery glances down dank alleys.” – HighTimes
Liars will release a new single, Proud Evolution, as a six track EP on October 19th, 2010. The new EP features a remix from Thom Yorke, a live version recorded at Music Hall Of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, plus three exclusive new b-sides “Come Now”, “Total Frown”, and “Strangers”.
Liars on “Proud Evolution”: “A triumphant processional piano part is hijacked by something more lurid and tempting. The clicking and gurgling of what’s kicking. Soon a large rolling mass of bass displaces the equilibrium and redirects it into a groove. The tempting wave reminds you that misplaced confidence can be frightening.”
Liars make a long awaited return to Canada, playing Toronto and Montreal for the first time since 2006, and playing Ottawa and Hamilton for the first time ever! Having taken their critically acclaimed fifth album Sisterworld across the US, Liars head north to devastate Canada including a headline appearance at the Pop Montreal International Music Festival on September 30th.
At this year’s Pitchfork Music Festival, Chicago Sun-Times observed “A series of owl cries and electronically distorted yowls rose and fell over guitar lines played carefully just a half xtone off where they should be, and the bass lurked and dodged in the lengthening shadows.”
Time Out Chicago raved, “Art-rockers Liars took a cue from the blistering sun, delivering a set that was equally as intense as the sweltering heat beaming down from above.”
Sisterworld is out now on CD, double vinyl and 2CD version. The second disc of the 2CD release sees each track on Sisterworld remixed and reinterpreted by a host of artists including Thom Yorke, Devendra Banhart, Atlas Sound, Blonde Redhead, Fol Chen and Alan Vega while the unique packaging for the 2CD and deluxe vinyl editions, designed by Brian Roettinger / Hand Held Heart (Grammy nominated and Rolling Stone award winning for his work with No Age) allows a surreal glimpse into Sisterworld.

New Andy Bell Music
NEW SINGLE “NON-STOP”
OUT OCTOBER 12th 2010
FROM THE SOLO ALBUM, NON-STOP, OUT NOW
“For anyone looking for this summer’s new club anthem, Non-Stop delivers the goods” – Venus Zine
“Bell delivers 10 songs packed with relentless beats and dizzying electronic accompaniment.” – M Magazine
“This is pop, house, electro and disco-glam all combined in to one campy cup of perfection.” – Theme Magazine
Andy Bell releases a new single and title track from his latest album, “Non-Stop”, out digitally on October 12th, 2010. The single features remixes from London based remix team Digital Dog (Tinchy Stryder, Britney Spears, Rihanna), plus exclusive tracks “Flying Colours” and the “Non-Stop” instrumental version. In addition, “Say What You Want” (Joy Joy Mix) by Ste Ashworth is included, which is the winning remix from a recent competition on andybell.com.
Non-Stop, co-produced and co-written by Andy Bell and Pascal Gabriel (S’Express, Debbie Harry, Kylie) is a lavish 10 track collection of exquisite dancefloor confessionals from one of the most acclaimed and beloved singers in British pop. The album features a duet with Perry Farrell (of Jane’s Addiction fame), Honey If You Love Him. Farrell, a huge fan of Andy’s voice, suggested the alliance.
Although Andy’s long-running partnership with Vince Clarke in Erasure (recipients of Best British Group at The Brit Awards) remains very much a going concern - since the release of 1986’s debut, Wonderland the duo have gone on to sell over 20 million albums, 5 of them hitting #1 and had 17 Top 10 UK singles - the singer’s second solo album provides a liberating platform for his more clubby, nocturnal, disco-glam side. He has even purposely changed his vocal register and style for much of Non-Stop, putting clear blue water between his soulfully electronic solo voice and his gleaming, poppy Erasure work.

Furnace MFG - In The News
This interesting video courtesy of my vinyl friend Manish Naik:
Get to know Furnace MFG with descriptions of the products and services we offer and a tour of the facilities. Furnace MFG is known for pressing the finest quality and best sounding vinyl records in the world. In this video we show you our state of the art pressing and assembly facilities and explain why people are saying Furnace MFG is vinyl pressing, perfected.
Ever wonder how vinyl records are pressed? In this video you will see the extruder make a puck of vinyl, sandwich it between two labels, and then press the vinyl puck between two plates that contain the grooves that make a vinyl record. Once the press cycle is finished you will see a knife cut off the excess vinyl. The record is then picked and placed into a sleeve where a heavy, metal plate is put on top to ensure the records remain flat while it cools. Records pressed at Furnace MFG / Pallas in Germany are among the finest in the world. This is a process that has been refined and perfected since the plant opened for business in 1947. Hear the difference today: www.furnacemfg.com/vinyl
Furnace is also one of the largest vinyl manufacturing companies in the country. With over 25 years of vinyl experience, Furnace MFG is THE pressing plant for high-quality vinyl as well as vinyl mastering; lacquer; and DMM cutting, galvanics and plating. Though we are well-known for our boutique, audiophile-grade vinyl manufacturing, we also have the most capacity in the world with over 45 active vinyl presses. As the vinyl format thrives, Furnace MFG will lead the charge to keep the physical music format alive and kicking well into the 21st century.

CRYSTAL VIPER REVEALS "LEGENDS" ARTWORK
Polish female fronted Traditional Heavy Metal act CRYSTAL VIPER, revealed front cover artwork of their forthcoming studio album "Legends", which will hit the streets on October 22, 2010 (through AFM Records in Europe and States / Spiritual Beast Records in Japan), was painted by the legendary French artist Chris Moyen, who is known from cooperation with such legendary acts as SLAYER, TRIVIUM, BEHERIT or BLASPHEMY.
The album was recorded and mixed at the MP Studio in Poland, with engineer Mariusz Pietka and producer Bart Gabriel. "Legends" will feature several very special guests: Rhino (the famous ex-MANOWAR drummer), Stefan Kaufmann (U.D.O., ex-ACCEPT), Mat Sinner (PRIMAL FEAR, SINNER) and Sven D'Anna & Dano Boland (WIZARD). As the title suggest, all the lyrics will be based on the original Polish legends from the middle-ages.

HOLY GRAIL: Debut Album Artwork Unveiled
"Crisis In Utopia", the debut album from the Los Angeles metal quintet HOLY GRAIL, will be released on October 26 via Prosthetic Records. The CD was produced by Danny Lohner (NINE INCH NAILS, A PERFECT CIRCLE) and features cover artwork by Andrei Bouzikov (SKELETONWITCH, MUNICIPAL WASTE).
Assembled a year ago, HOLY GRAIL is already at the forefront of the new wave of metal that pays homage to such legends as IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST and DIO. The band's debut EP, "Improper Burial" (released in late 2009), featuring just two original tracks and two covers, earned HOLY GRAIL significant press accolades including a two-page feature in hometown paper LA Weekly, a spot on Decibel's "25 Most Anticipated Releases Of 2010" list and inclusion on Metal Hammer's "Guide To The Best In The Upcoming New Wave Of Trad Metal."
HOLY GRAIL is currently on the road in North America as the support act for EXODUS.

Rolling Stone Publishing Special Issue With Top 100 Beatles Songs
Rolling Stone Magazine is happy to be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the release of the Beatles final album, 'Let It Be,' with a special issue highlighting the groups one hundred best songs. Along with the list, there are additional articles with John Lennon and Paul McCartney talking about their favorite tracks, the group's best cover songs and the tracks with George Harrison's best guitar work. I'd be interested in their solo work as well, each member had several hits and it is hard to imagine that some of these aren't included.
Here is Rolling Stone's top ten:
1. A Day in the Life
2. I Want to Hold Your Hand
3. Strawberry Fields Forever
4. Yesterday
5 .In My Life

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne
FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 23, 2010
DEAR JERRY: To this day, when pop music documentaries recap the 1940s, '50s and '60s, they invariably devote a segment to the payola scandals. Alan Freed is often the payola poster boy, though Dick Clark and other big names are sometimes mentioned.
Regardless of those under discussion, it always is about dee jays being paid to play records on the air. Stan Freberg even spoofed the practice in his 1960 hit, “The Old Payola Roll Blues.”
But wasn't there a slight variation of payola, where, instead of money, dee jays got the artists to give personal performances for little or no pay?
—Genevieve Espinosa, Beaumont, Texas
DEAR GENEVIEVE: This certainly is an overlooked slice of Rock and Roll history, one even I had forgotten about.
However, during the course of an interview I once published, Bobby Vinton shared his opinions and reflections on these forms of payola:
“It was just a way of life at the time. In fact, life itself is a form of payola — you do something for me and I'll do something for you. That's certainly how the politicians and lobbyists work.
“Basically, there's no harm to it but the record industry had to take the brunt of the criticism. Still, no one ever forced anyone to buy a record they didn't want to own.
“I used to come to a city to do a record hop, put on by a local dee jay. The disc jockey would ask me to sing at the record hop in exchange for him playing my current record, especially in the week leading up to the hop.
“The dee jay was there to make money, from the kids (his listeners) who bought tickets to attend, which they did because I was there live performing my record, which was being played on the dee jay's radio show.
“I was happy; the record company was happy; the dee jay was happy; and the kids were happy. Everybody wins. What's wrong with that?
“It was better in those days, when all of this was out in the open.”
Good ol' quid pro quo: something for something.
DEAR JERRY: Just read your column about Chubby Checker having so many different hits with “Twist” titles. He definitely made a career out of hit songs based on teen dances.
Besides “The Twist,” I recall the pony, the fly, and the limbo, but I'm pretty sure he didn't stop there. Can you name them all?
—Zoni Hamilton, York, Pa.
DEAR ZONI: Of course, and it may surprise you to know Chubby (who never was) has danced his way right into the 21st century, as you shall see from this chronological dance-a-thon:
“The Twist” (1960 & '61); “The Hucklebuck” (1960); “Pony Time” (1960); “(Dance the) Mess Around” (1961); “Let's Twist Again” (1961); “The Fly” (1961); “Twistin' U.S.A.” (1961); “Teach Me to Twist” (1962) (with Bobby Rydell); “Slow Twistin' (1962) (with Dee Dee Sharp); “La Paloma Twist” (1962); “Limbo Rock” (1962); “Popeye the Hitchhiker” (1962); “Let's Limbo Some More” (1963); “Birdland” (1963); “Twist It Up” (1963); “She Wants T' Swim” (1964); “Let's Do the Freddie” (1965); “Hey You! Little Boo-ga-loo” (1966); “The Twist (Yo, Twist!)” (1988) (with Fat Boys); “Doin' the Zombie” (2008); and “The Texas Twist”(2009) (with Texas Radio).
If we were compiling a concept album of Chubby's dance songs (umm, not a bad idea), to these 21 we would add two “bonus tracks,” both about dancing in general: “Dancin' Party” (1962) and “At the Discotheque” (1965).
All of these are single releases. Checker's albums include numerous other dance tunes.
Remarkably, over half of his 38 chart hits have a dance theme and title.
IZ ZAT SO? Though Chubby Checker is the best known artist with the same hit twice — “The Twist” in 1960 and '61 — with the exact same recording, he was not the first.
Two years before “The Twist,” Johnny Tillotson hit the charts in 1958 with “Dreamy Eyes,” then scored again in 1961 with the exact same recording. This tune is not the same song popularized by the Four Preps, Youngsters, Viceroys, and others.
Fortuitously for Chubby, his career skyrocketed on the wings of a cover version. His “The Twist” charted just two weeks after Hank Ballard's original recording, and it soon became THE version.
Things didn't work out too badly for Ballard, though. Since he wrote “The Twist” he collected kagillions in royalties.
