#1 in UK, Features Array of Motown and Soul Classics; Collection Already an International Sensation, With Gold & Platinum Sales Success Across Europe; Wide Range of TV and Radio Appearances Slated, Including Today Show and WNYC's Soundcheck; "GOING BACK" Arrives in U.S. on September 28th.
NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - September 27, 2010) - Atlantic recording artist Phil Collins has announced the U.S. release of his hugely anticipated new album, "GOING BACK." The legendary artist's first full-length solo work in eight years arrives in stores and at all digital retailers on Tuesday, September 28th.
"GOING BACK" is a deeply personal labor of love that finds the eight-time Grammy winner faithfully recreating the Motown and soul music that played such an influential role in his creative life. The album -- Collins' eighth solo studio recording -- will be available in a number of digital and physical editions, with exclusive extras including 7 bonus tracks, a 90-minute DVD making-of documentary, and limited edition lyric sheet lithograph. In addition, a very special "Singles Box" comprising 30 tracks across 15 vinyl 7" singles is also on offer -- for complete details, please visit www.philcollins.com/us
"GOING BACK" has quickly proven a worldwide phenomenon, receiving platinum certification in Germany and gold certification in both France and the United Kingdom after little more than one week in release. The album hit #1 in the UK this week as well as in Belgium and the Netherlands. "GOING BACK" has seen top 3 sales in Germany, France, Austria, and New Zealand, as well as top 5 successes in Switzerland and Italy.
"GOING BACK" has received unanimous critical acclaim from all corners of the globe. "So faithfully have Collins and his confreres recreated 'The Sound of Young America' -- shimmering tambourines drowning out drums, bass compressed to a fat, distorted throb -- that it's hard not to be swept along," declared BBC Music, which also named the collection as BBC Radio 2's "Album of the Week." "You have to take your hat off to Phil Collins," hailed England's Daily Express, noting "the 59-year-old singer zips through a selection of mostly-Motown classics like 'Jimmy Mack' and 'Uptight' with the verve, energy, and wit of a man reborn."
Closer to home, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer praised Collins for having "a way of personalizing a song, not so much to make it his own but to convince listeners its theirs... He succeeds most in doing so on relative obscurities like the Ronettes' 'Do I Love You?' and the Temptations' 'Girl (Why You Wanna Make Me Blue),' both evoking an air of wistful romance. Another noteworthy highlight is the Stevie Wonder ballad, 'Blame It On the Sun,' which Collins renders with empathy and striking conviction."
Collins will celebrate the release of "GOING BACK" with a number of high-profile TV appearances and radio interviews, including NBC's Today show on Tuesday, September 28th, and Headline News' The Joy Behar Show on Wednesday, September 29th. In addition, he will take part in a very special installment of WNYC radio's Soundcheck, airing live from The Green Space in New York City on Tuesday, September 28th at 2PM ET. Phil also recently joined host Michael Kay for an in-depth conversation on the YES Network's Centerstage.
Earlier this summer, Collins heralded "GOING BACK" with a series of seven intimate, SRO shows -- including a 3-night stand at NYC's Roseland Ballroom. One of the shows was filmed for a concert special entitled "Phil Collins 'Going Back' Motown Special Live from Roseland" that is currently airing on Comcast's ON DEMAND network through October 31st.
On stage, Phil brought his homage to life with a big band anchored by three members of Motown's legendary Funk Brothers studio team -- bassist Bob Babbitt and guitarists Eddie Willis and Ray Monette -- who are also featured on the album. The live band also included long-time Collins cohorts Chester Thompson (drums), Daryl Stuermer (guitar), and Brad Cole (keyboards), plus Leslie Smith (percussion). Rounding out the ensemble was a five-member horn section and six backing vocalists.
In its review of the New York show, Rolling Stone enthused: "...Collins pulled it off. Backed by a killer 18-piece band, he got most everybody in the Roseland Ballroom dancing to classics by Steve Wonder, the Temptations, Smokey Robinson and the Ronettes... From the moment he took the stage and burst into 'Ain't Too Proud To Beg,' it was clear this music was much closer to his heart than even some of his own hits. Every nuance of the original arrangements was meticulously recreated..."
Staged as an "old school" style dance concert, the shows prompted Time Out New York to state, "No fancy stadium gimmickry here, but in Phil-style parlance, a bloody lovely show." "It was when he dug deeper into the archives that the show blossomed," said The Hollywood Reporter. "Collins' talents as a balladeer were showcased in such songs as 'Blame It On The Sun' and 'Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer' (both by Wonder) and especially on the Goffin/King reverie 'Going Back,' the lyrics of which encapsulate the rationale for the whole project."
While in the past Collins has paid tribute to his roots by covering some of his favorite songs -- including "You Can't Hurry Love," "A Groovy Kind Of Love," "Tomorrow Never Knows," "True Colours," and others -- this marks the first time in his 30-year solo career that he has devoted an entire project to the work of other songwriters and performers.
"The '60s were without doubt a pinnacle of the songwriting, producing and performing art," Collins comments in the liner notes to "GOING BACK." "My aim in finally making this record was to see if it was possible for me to recapture the sound and the feelings I got from listening to these songs the first time around. I've always loved covering other people's songs, and this collection is something I've been burning to do."
Legendary Motown songwriter and producer Lamont Dozier hailed "GOING BACK": "Recording an album of Motown covers can be tricky, but I have to say this album has exceeded my expectations. Phil Collins has truly given us the real thing vocally, instrumentally, and production-wise... It's spectacular, making it impossible to pick a favorite because they're all masterfully done."
The career of Phil Collins is one that, by any measure, stands among the most creative, prolific, and impressive in the history of modern music. It is a career that really has been many careers -- musician, singer, composer, producer, actor -- from art rock beginnings to pop stardom, from big band leader to film soundtracks and Broadway. It has been an exceptional musical life spanning four decades, some 100 million solo albums sold (250 million if you count his work with Genesis), an extraordinary string of hits, eight Grammy Awards, an Oscar, two Golden Globes, five BRIT Awards, numerous industry accolades, and, above all, an inestimable influence on countless fellow artists and passionate fans around the globe.

Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest (Vinyl)
On 120 gram white vinyl; comes with a digital download coupon! Halcyon Digest is Deerhunter's fourth album and their first to be released on 4AD worldwide. The album was recorded in at Chase Park Transduction Studios in Deerhunter's hometown of Athens, GA with the band self-producing and Ben Allen enlisted to mix it (he also worked on Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavillion). Shunning the current trend of using online portals to drip feed every detail to announce a record, Halcyon Digest was launched with the band wanting a return to Xerox postering instead. Fans were encouraged to poster local haunts in return for being the first to know news on the record and touring plus receiving exclusive tracks from the band. Hundreds of photos were sent in from New York to London to Moscow and all points between.
Following the massive critical success of Deerhunter's last album Microcastle, expectations are feverishly inflated for the new Deerhunter release. Luckily, the Atlanta quartet seem to operate in their own realm, away from the rolling cycles of pressure and praise. And it shows in Halcyon Digest, which is an impressively self-assured work; with a level of detail and care that belies its two-week recording process. Deerhunter are one of those rare acts that it is nigh on impossible to second guess - what they record apparently depends greatly on their mood at the time, rather than any great pre-planning. And so it should be no great shock that Halcyon Digest is a world away from the frenetic wall of distorted guitars that (at times) defined Microcastle. Indeed, if this album resembles anything, it is more the Atlas Sound album Logos, recorded by Deerhunter main man Bradford Cox post-Microcastle. In other words, Halcyon Digest is noticeably more calm, tuneful and reliant on electronics and acoustics than Microcastle, especially on album closer "He Would Have Laughed," recorded in tribute to Jay Reatard.

Fences - Fences (Vinyl)
On 180 gram vinyl! Chris Mansfield fancies himself a fuck-up. Through the ten songs that make up the self titled full-length from Fences (the twenty-seven year old musician's band), the singer/songwriter sings, in his resigned baritone, how he just can't seem to get it right - love, life, family - again and again. Most songwriters are lucky to write a single love song that truly cuts to the bone once in their lifetime. With his debut record, Mansfield has managed to write ten such songs; taught, jangling, downcast pop songs that expose the crippling pain and ineffable beauty that comes from a true kind of love. If Mansfield's growing international fanbase - which includes the album's producer Sara Quin, of Tegan and Sara - shows anything, it's that Mansfield can do no wrong with his songs.

"We're very excited about Invented," said lead singer and guitarist Jim Adkins, "it was great reconnecting and creating an album with Mark Trombino, we can't wait for our fans to hear it." Invented marks the band's first studio album since 2007's Chase This Light. Jimmy Eat World's last release may have been three years ago but they've been busy. Neil Young - Le Noise (Vinyl)
On 180 gram vinyl! This eight-song album is a collaboration between the acclaimed rock icon Neil Young and musician, songwriter, and producer Daniel Lanois - known for his work with U2, Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, Brian Eno, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, The Neville Brothers and many others. Young and Lanois have crossed paths musically over the course of many years, including Lanois' performances at Young's Bridge School Benefit Concert and Young's performance at Farm Aid when Lanois was Willie Nelson's music director, but this is the first time the two have recorded together. Recorded in Lanois' home in the Silverlake area of Los Angeles, Le Noise features Young on acoustic and electric guitars with Lanois adding his trademark sonic textures, creating one of the most sonically arresting albums Young has ever recorded. No band, no overdubs, just "a man on a stool and me doing a nice job on the recording," as Lanois puts it. "Neil was so appreciative of the sonics that we presented to him," Lanois says. "He walked in the door and I put an acoustic guitar into his hands - one that I had been working on to build a new sound. That's the multi-layered acoustic sound that you hear on the songs 'Love and War' and 'Peaceful Valley Boulevard.' I wanted him to understand that I've spent years dedicated to the sonics in my home and that I wanted to give him something he'd never heard before. He picked up that instrument, which had everything - an acoustic sound, electronica, bass sounds - and he knew as soon as he played it that we had taken the acoustic guitar to a new level. It's hard to come up with a new sound at the back end of fifty years of rock and roll, but I think we did it."

Posies - Blood/Candy
On 180 gram gatefold vinyl; comes with a digital download and a poster! Fresh off the Frosting on the Beater full-album shows and their work with Big Star, The Posies chart unforeseen territory on Blood/Candy while holding onto their well known signature sound. The almost entirely self produced record boasts melodic hooks, provocative lyrics, and intricate layers of instrumentation that blend far-out, spacey sounds with sophisticated hues. The bulk of the album was recorded and mixed in Spain and their hometown of Seattle, with stops in Ecuador, Canada, Paris and Los Angeles. "After the eclecticism of our last album, Every Kind of Light, we thought it would be a good idea to make a kind of classic, back to our roots album, guitar pop with lots of harmonies, etc. We didn't end up doing that - however, what stands in place of that, is an album even more adventurous, more playful, and more heartfelt than I think we've ever done. If I had to pick one album for us to be remembered by and delete all the others, no doubt that I would choose this one," says co-founder Ken Stringfellow. Jon Auer, also original co-founder, adds, "With Blood/Candy, we definitely sound like us, but some of these songs are completely from an alternate Posies' universe. We subscribe to the 'evolve or perish' philosophy. We directed ourselves to new places with this recording and tried not to travel down familiar paths when it could be avoided. Expect the unexpected." Since the band's inception in the late 80s in Seattle, The Posies - known for their cross-pollination of pop and rock - have maintained a consistent career throughout the years. Noted for hits like "Golden Blunders," recorded by Ringo Starr in 1992, along with "Dream All Day," "Solar Sister" and "Flavor of the Month" from their pivotal release Frosting on the Beater, the group has developed a massive cult following and critical acclaim.

Quiet Riot - Metal Health (Vinyl)
On limited edition 180 gram gatefold vinyl! Quiet Riot broke a lot of rock and roll history book records and made quite a bit of NOIZE with their mega-platinum smash Metal Health album in 1983. This hard working Los Angeles power quartet featured the great vocals and writing of front man Kevin Dubrow, bassist extraordinaire Rudy Sarzo, power drummer Frank Banali and guitar shredder Carlos Cavazo. Together, they delivered the goods in a big way, making Metal Health one of the first ever multi-platinum heavy metal albums to go number one. Thanks in part to the amazing smash cover version of Slade's "Cum on Feel the Noize," Metal Health was and still is incredibly popular, and now Friday Music is ever so proud to be the home of this first time 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl limited edition release. The LP is jam packed with stellar metal anthems including the very heavy title track "Metal Health," plus more rockers like "Love's a Bitch," the amazing "Breathless," and the more blues oriented groover "Don't Want to Let You Go." For this limited edition release, we have gone back to the original Pasha Records/Epic Records tapes, which have been mastered impeccably by Joe Reagoso and Kevin Gray at AcousTech/RTI. Plus, we have also included a very limited gatefold album cover with all of the original cool graphics as you remember them. This is a much welcomed audiophile dream for the heavy metal rocker in all of us. Now, can we sing in unison: BANG YOUR HEAD!

SODOM – ‘IN WAR AND PIECES’ COVER ART
Sodom‘s new album, 'In War And Pieces' will be released via SPV/Steamhammer on November 23rd. It was produced by Grip Inc. guitarist Wade Sorychta. The cover art was done by Eliran Kantor, who is responsible for great cover art such as Testament‘s The Formation Of Damnation as well as album covers for recent releases by The Crinn (Dreaming Saturn), Gwar (Lust In Space) and Anacrusis‘ re-recordings called Hindsight: Suffering Hour And Reason Revisited.
Cool album cover art!

New Senses Fail – The Fire Video Stream, Cover Art
Senses Fail is ready to unleash their new effort (their fourth studio release)'The Fire' on October 26. 'The Fire' will be the first album with guitarist Zack Roach, who replaced Heath Saraceno. As Senses Fail is known for its strong riffing and solos, this may have a noticeable effect, although, “The Fire” and “Saint Anthony” both sound like classic Senses Fail.
Singer Buddy Nielsen has said The Fire will be a passionate, creative album.
The Fire “is a reaction and a release of a whirlwind of emotions that came from fighting for what we love and dealing with change and growth both personally and creatively,” Nielsen said.

Bon Jovi, Alice Cooper Nominated For Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame
Bon Jovi and Alice Cooper have been nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Donovan, Neil Diamond and Dr John are among the other first-timers in contention for the prestigious roll of honor. Previous nominees LL Cool J, Donna Summer, Tom Waits and The Beastie Boys are also up for induction next year. Acts become eligible for inclusion to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twenty-five years after the release of their first recording.
The final list of inductees will be announced in December, while the ceremony is scheduled to take place in New York next year.
Five of the fifteen artists will be inducted based on the votes of over 500 industry members over the next couple of months. The announcement will be made later in the year.
The nominees are:
•Alice Cooper
•Beastie Boys
•Bon Jovi
•Chic
•Neil Diamond
•Donovan
•Dr. John
•J. Geils Band
•LL Cool J
•Darlene Love
•Laura Nyro
•Donna Summer
•Joe Tex
•Tom Waits
•Chuck Willis
Missing once again are such rock favorites as Rush and Kiss. Also overlooked again is any representative of the art and progressive rock genre such as the Moody Blues, Yes, Emerson, Lake and Palmer and King Crimson. However, people have been lobbying for Neil Diamond (among others) for years. You can't please them all......but you would think there could be a better way to get nominated and included than the way they do it now....
ALICE COOPER Comments On Nomination For ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME Induction:
Old-school shock-rocker Alice Cooper has released the following statement in response to the announcement that he and his band are among 15 artists who were nominated for induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2011:
"On behalf of Dennis (Dunaway), Neal (Smith), Michael (Bruce) and the late great Glen (Buxton), we are honored to be nominated for induction in to the Hall. Anytime you are nominated in your chosen profession, it's definitely a compliment to be recognized.
"It's hard to fathom possibly being in the same club as artists who inspired us originally, like THE BEATLES, THE [ROLLING] STONES, THE BEACH BOYS, THE WHO, THE YARDBIRDS, and Chuck Berry, and to be nominated the same year as legendary artists like my personal favorite songwriter of all time, Laura Nyro, as well as Donovan, who sang on our 'Billion Dollar Babies' record, and our good friends in Bon Jovi, is a great feeling.
"Five guys starting a band, just hoping to meet girls and drink free beer, rehearsing and playing local bars five hours a night for the first few years — that was us. We came up with the theatrics and made every effort not to sacrifice the music one bit; we thought it was like our job to bring theatrics to rock 'n' roll. And then, amazingly enough, we were having a bunch of massive hit records which was proof that theatricality and rock 'n' roll could, in fact, be joined successfully.

We've been told that we revolutionized the live concert experience and if that's truly the case and it's led to this nomination for induction into the Hall of Fame, the only thing to say is, of course, 'There's no business like show business!'"
