Fake Problems Announce First Headlining Tour
Fake Problems have announced their first US headline tour in support of the album "Real Ghosts Caught on Tape." Joining Fake Problems will be Pomegranates (Afternoon Records), Laura Stevenson and the Cans (Don Giovanni Records), and on select dates, Now Now (No Sleep), and Into It. Over It. (No Sleep). The tour will go from April 14 through May 21 and hits nearly every major market in the US.

Record companies rethink strategies as music sales fall

The beginning of 2011 has signaled almost no signs of positive things to come for the future of the music business. The hope generated from bloated 2010 sales has all but vanished, as Warner Music Group hired investment bank Goldman Sachs to search out potential buyers for the company.
The news came on Jan. 20, one of the more prominent announcements in a couple of months filled with similar negative proclamations for the future of the music industry.
Warner Music, one of the four major record companies, hired Goldman Sachs to investigate interested buyers after several offers to buy out the company flooded Warner's management, according to news reports.

Vanguard lets fans choose reissued vinyl for Record Store Day
Last year, Vanguard Records released five classic titles on vinyl from their vaults on Record Store Day. Immediately afterwards, Vanguard and Record Store Day asked fans to vote on www.recordstoreday.com for the five classic titles to be reissued on Record Store Day 2011. These five titles are limited to 1000, and available EXCLUSIVELY at participating independently owned record stores on Record Store Day 2011, Saturday, April 16:
Vanguard and Sugar Hill will be releasing additional titles to indie record stores on Record Store Day before making them available to other retailers at a later date. Those include vinyl reissues of Nickel Creek’s Nickel Creek, This Side and Why Should The Fire Die? albums and a Vanguard compilation album called Follow Me Down: Vanguard’s Lost Psychedelic Era (1966 –1970), which marks the first hand-selected foray into Vanguard’s archives for “lost” records and 45s.

Queen has grand plans for its 40th anniversary
Queen will be marking its 40th anniversary over the next year with “a lot of activity,” says guitarist Brian May.
That includes the reissuing of the band’s entire 15-album studio catalog in a series of two-CD deluxe editions, each one featuring rarities. Bob Ludwig will be remastering the albums, which will be released in three waves. The first wave, consisting of the first five Queen albums, is due in the spring.

‘Special Edition’ Asia box set release in March
Frontiers Records is set to release a special edition live CD/DVD box set from supergroup Asia. SPIRIT OF THE NIGHT – THE PHOENIX TOUR LIVE IN CAMBRIDGE 2009 will be released in North America on March 8th. The CD boasts 13 tracks, which includes a CD-only track exclusive, as well as a bonus track, while the DVD features 85 minutes of material, as well as bonus DVD content including an EPK and special footage of “In The Court Of The Crimson King” featuring King Crimson founding member Ian MacDonald.

CiTR and Mint Records team up for indie compilation
Limited-edition vinyl album features Vancouver underground artists Fanshaw and Fine Mist among others

University of B.C. radio station CiTR and Vancouver-based label Mint Records will celebrate the release of their new joint compilation tonight.
The album, CiTR Pop Alliance Compilation: Vol. 2, will officially be made available during a concert at the Interurban Gallery.
Curated by CiTR host Duncan McHugh ("Duncan's Donuts"), the new volume features 11 tracks by some of Vancouver's best underground indie bands, including Apollo Ghosts, Watermelon and No Kids.

Antony and the Johnsons to release Swanlights EP
Antony and the Johnsons will release the “Swanlights” EP digitally and on 10” via Secretly Canadian on April 26. A CD version is forthcoming. Today's Music History:
On this day in 1956, police in Cleveland, Ohio enforce a 1931 ordinance that barred people under the age of 18 from dancing in public unless accompanied by an adult.
In 1957, Buddy Holly recorded a new version of “That’ll Be the Day,” the title being taken from a phrase used by John Wayne in the film The Searchers.
In 1965, the Beach Boys record "Help Me Rhonda", with guitarist Al Jardine singing lead vocal. The disc will become their second Billboard #1 and stay on the chart for eleven weeks.
In 1976, The Eagles LP "Their Greatest Hits 1971 - 1975" becomes the first album in history to be certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. The new certification represented sales of at least 1 million copies for albums and 2 million copies for singles. The Platinum award was originated in the early seventies because Gold status was achieved by most popular records in a very short period of time. The Eagles Greatest Hits album stayed on Billboard's Hot 200 chart for two and half years.
Winners at the 1982 Grammy Awards included John Lennon and Yoko Ono for Album of the Year with Double Fantasy, Kim Carnes for Song of the Year with “Bette Davis Eyes,” Quincy Jones for Producer of the Year and Sheena Easton for Best New Artist.
In 1987, Grammy Awards are presented to: Paul Simon's "Graceland" - Best Album; Steve Winwood's "Higher Love" - Best Record and Bruce Hornsby and the Range - Best New Artist. Fats Domino is presented with a Lifetime Achievement award.
In 1992, The US Postal Service unveils two versions of its proposed Elvis stamp for fans to vote on. The younger Elvis would win out over the Vegas Elvis and was issued on January 8, 1993.
In 1990, American singer-songwriter-pianist Johnnie Ray died of liver failure at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. He scored over 20 Top 40 singles between 1952 and 1960 including the 1956 U.K. #1 and U.S. #2 single “Just Walking in the Rain.” Dexys Midnight Runners’ name checked Ray in the lyrics to their 1982 hit “Come On Eileen.”
Kurt Cobain married Courtney Love in Waikiki, Hawaii in 1992. The press reported that the couple were expecting a baby on Sept 10 of the same year.
In 1999, Madonna wins four Grammy Awards, including Best Pop Album for "Ray Of Light". Celine Dion is given the nod for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female for "My Heart Will Go On" and Eric Clapton's "My Father's Eyes" is named Best Pop Vocal Performance - Male.
Carlos Santana won eight awards at the Grammy Awards. Before the Supernatural album, the guitarist had not had a Top 10 album since 1981.
In 2004, Estelle Axton, who helped create the legendary soul music label Stax, died in a hospital in Memphis, at age 85. Stax was home to Otis Redding, Rufus Thomas, Isaac Hayes and Booker T and the MG’s. The Stax studio, “Soulsville U.S.A.,” was second only to Motown in its production of soul hits during its 1960s heyday.
In 2006, The Sex Pistols gave a virtual middle finger to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when they issued an open letter on front man Johnny Rotten's Website, saying they have no intention of attending the induction ceremony at New York's Waldorf Astoria Hotel. "Next to The Sex Pistols, rock and roll and that hall of fame is a piss stain. Your museum, urine in wine. We're not coming."
