Hallelujah! Cohen Cover Takes Over iTunes Again – This Time For Haiti Relief
Covers of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" have a history of breaking records for digital music (see American Idol's Justin Castro, Jeff Buckley, that girl from the X Factor). Today, Justin Timberlake joins the club.
Timberlake covered Cohen's '84 classic -- with help from former fellow Mouseketeer Matt Morris -- on Friday night's Hope For Haiti benefit. And though the evening featured memorable performances by artists including Madonna, Wyclef Jean, Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Coldplay, Jay-Z, etc., etc. -- apparently JT hit people in their credit cards (and hearts) a little more than the others. His cover of "Hallelujah" is currently at No. 2 on the iTunes chart. (Sheryl Crow and Kid Rock's cover of "Lean on Me" is the next telethon recording to represent on the chart, at the No. 12 spot.)
"It's always been one of my favourite songs," Timberlake told MTV of "Hallelujah." "And my artist Matt, we always kinda sing that song when we're messign around in the studio with ideas.
"The way that it's written can be interpreted many different ways," he continued. "But the emotion that comes through -- the chords, the melody and also what's being said in the song -- it just kind of fit for the telethon."
All the musical performances from Friday night's fundraising special were made available to download via iTunes following the program, with funds raised going towards various NGOs assisting with the earthquake relief effort. According to the New York Times, the Hope For Haiti Now album was the No. 1 album on iTunes in 18 countries, and set records as the biggest one-day album pre-order for the online retailer. That said, however, CBC reports that final figures on how much the recordings raised for charity have yet to be released.
The telethon's producers released a statement saying that the donations made by viewers via phone and text message tally up to more than $57 million US. (CBC reports that the Strombo/Cheryl Hickey/Ben Mulroney-hosted Canadian telethon that also aired Friday raised around $9.4 million.)

Blackball Records reissuing Jawbreaker's Unfun
Jawbreaker's Adam Pfahler made a post to the band's MySpace page this weekend wherein he revealed that his Blackball Records will be reissuing the band's 1990 debut full-length, Unfun.
We're not really calling it this, but the twentieth anniversary edition of Jawbreaker's 1990 debut album Unfun will be released on Blackball Records on March 30, 2010.
Unfun has been remastered by John Golden from the original analog tapes. The increased sampling rate boosts some of the bottom end and midrange. It sounds fucking awesome.
The CD and download versions of the record include the three song Whack & Blite E.P., as well as the 7" mix of "Busy" as an unlisted bonus track. The vinyl version is available for the first time since 1992 and has the same 12 song track list.
The original artwork has been restored and all formats include additional band photos from the time of recording. The CD comes with a 24 page booklet with the Whack & Blite E.P. insert reproduced in its entirety.

AC/DC To Release "AC/DC: Iron Man 2" Compilation Album
AC/DC has just announced they will release "AC/DC: Iron Man 2," on April 19th through Columbia Records in support of the upcoming "Iron Man 2" film from Marvel Studios. The album will feature 15 AC/DC songs, selected from ten of the band's studio albums ranging from 1976 to 2008. Included in the album are songs such as "Shoot To Thrill," "Thunderstruck," and "Let There Be Rock" as well as "War Machine" from the recent "Black Ice" release.

The survival of vinyl records

Music industry insiders made a prediction in 1989 that vinyl records would soon be extinct.
The foresight was partially true because record companies stopped producing 45s (vinyl singles) in early 1990. The reason: buying behavior of music patrons had changed. Cassettes and compact discs proved far more appealing than the flat, black circles with only two songs on them.
As it turned out, LPs (long players in industry jargon) maintained appeal with DJs throughout the decade of cassettes and compact discs.
With the emergence of DJ software like Serato in 2001, another prediction was made – LPs would soon be extinct because digital vinyl could be used to play MP3s. Furthermore, turntables were going to be tossed to the wayside because digital turntables, allowing DJs to scratch and back cue CDs, were underway.

James McMurtry Announces iPhone App and Tour Dates
James McMurtry fans can now stay up to date with concert information, photos, videos, music and blog posts while they are on the go with the his new official iPhone application. The app also allows users to post photos from their iPhone directly to the fan community and engage other fans across Facebook and iLike.
McMurtry and his band will be touring the western United States in support of his latest release, Live in Europe (Lightning Rod Records). The album is a document of McMurtry's first European tour, on which he was joined by keyboardist Ian McLagan and fellow Texas songwriting legend Jon Dee Graham. The set is available as a CD with a bonus DVD, or as a deluxe vinyl LP package with a CD and DVD insert.
Live in Europe, available as a CD/DVD set or as a vinyl LP/DVD set, has earned praise from the critics. Mike Seely, writing in the Seattle Weekly, wrote: "The great Texan James McMurtry released a new album of old material in 2009—in other words, a live album. No matter: Mere mention of its drop date gave me an excuse to delve deeper into McMurtry's supremely underrated oeuvre. . . This re-exposure made me surer than ever that McMurtry is the Springsteen of the South."

German hard rock legends The Scorpions have announced that at the end of their upcoming world tour they will be retiring. The tour will be in support of their new album, "Sting in the Tail," which is set for release on March 19th. The band made the announcement on their website as well as releasing a couple of previews from the new album. Here is the announcement:
It was always our pleasure, our purpose in life, our passion and we were fortunate enough to make music for you - whether it was live on stage or in the studio, creating new songs.
While we were working on our album these past few months, we could literally feel how powerful and creative our work was – and how much fun we were still having, in the process. But there was also something else: We want to end the Scorpion's extraordinary career on a high note. We are extremely grateful for the fact that we still have the same passion for music we've always had since the beginning. This is why, especially now, we agree we have reached the end of the road. We finish our career with an album we consider to be one of the best we have ever recorded and with a tour that will start in our home country Germany and take us to five different continents over the next few years.

Norah Jones Talks ‘The Fall’ And Performs Songs The Album
Norah Jones has kicked off 2010 with a series of TV, radio and online performances in support of her critically-acclaimed new album The Fall. Jones, whose career sales have just surpassed 40 million worldwide! The multiple GRAMMY Award-winning singer’s performance and interview on KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic aired January 6. Her interview and performance for Yahoo Maximum Performance is also currently live!
On January 12, Blue Note Records will release the Chasing Pirates Remix EP digitally and as 12” vinyl. The remixes—which were premiered online last month on RCRD LBL, Stereogum, and Artist Direct—include “That’s What I Said (The NYC Remix by Adrock and Mike D),” “Chasing Pirates (Santigold and Snotty Remix),” and “Chasing Pirates (Droogs Remix),” which was created by a remix collective that included Beck.
Upcoming Jones will also be taping performances for Clear Channel Radio Stripped and PBS Soundstage, as well as taking part in the GRAMMY 2010 MusiCares Person Of The Year tribute to Neil Young on January 29 in Los Angeles. Jones is nominated for a 2010 GRAMMY Award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals for her duet with Willie Nelson on “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” from his album American Classic. She will be launching a 36-city U.S. tour in support of The Fall on March 5 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

There will be a special iTunes version, containing an extra track and booklet, whilst the CD and vinyl versions will feature a selection of remixes, all of them exclusive. The single will not be available in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, where it's the subject of government bans.

Peter Frampton release an autobiographical album at the end of April. It's titled 'Thank You Mr. Churchill', and was recorded at his home studio in Cincinnati, with co-producer Chris Kimsey. Guesting on the record is Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron.

The White Stripes to release their first official live album Duo
The White Stripes are set to release their first ever official live album. The band will release the 16-song record on CD and vinyl on March 15 to accompany the regular DVD release of Canadian tour documentary Under Great White Northern Lights.
Following its deluxe release last year, the Emmett Malloy-directed film will be released on DVD on the same day.
The duo's first live album draws on recordings taken from the same 2007 tour as the documentary, which say Jack and Meg White play across Canada.

Aerosmith to audition singers to replace Steven Tyler
Aerosmith have revealed that they are set to hold auditions next month for a replacement for singer Steven Tyler. Tyler recently checked into rehab to get treatment for painkiller addiction. He insisted he still planned to work with the band, but now guitarist Joe Perry has said that another frontman will be sought soon.
Perry told news agency QMI that they were going to "start having some auditions, making some phone calls. Hopefully, we'll have found a new singer by the summer, and Aerosmith will be able to go back out on the road".
Perry said that the move wouldn't necessarily mean that Tyler would not return to the band.
"He [Tyler] has to have leg surgery and foot surgery and it's basically going to take him out of the picture for about a year, year and a half," he explained. "So, in the meantime, the rest of the band wants to play. And I want to play with the other guys in Aerosmith. So the four of us are just making our plans. We're gonna find somebody to get in there and fill that spot."

REM's 'Everybody Hurts' chosen by Simon Cowell for Haiti charity single
REM's 1993 single "Everybody Hurts" has been chosen by Simon Cowell as his charity single to raise money for the Haiti earthquake appeal. Paul McCartney, Coldplay, Take That and Robbie Williams are rumoured to feature on the single, which has received the backing of Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who has said that VAT on the record will be waived to maximise revenues.
REM's manager Bertis Downs told The Sun that the band are waiving all royalties for the song, which is raising money for the Helping Haiti fund and the Disasters Emergency Committee.
"We are deeply touched the song has been chosen for this Haiti campaign," Downs said. "It means a lot that the song the guys wrote all those years ago will be used for such an important appeal."
Other acts expected to appear on the single, which being organised jointly by Cowell and The Sun, include N-Dubz, Leona Lewis, Will Young and Rod Stewart. The single will be released later this month, though no date has been confirmed yet.

Born on this day in 1889, Leadbelly, (Hurrdi William Ledbetter), Blues musician. Wrote "Goodnight Irene," "The Rock Island Line," "The Midnight Special" and was once jailed for shooting a man dead during an argument over a woman. He died December 6, 1949.
In 1972, Maybelle Smith, also known as 'Big Maybelle,' died in Cleveland from a diabetic coma. Her career crested as a jazz singer in the late 40's and early 50's recording some best selling records such as "Candy" and "96 Tear Drops." She was 47.
Vic Ames (Ames Brothers) died in an auto accident in 1978.
In 1978, Terry Kath, guitarist with Chicago accidentally shot himself dead while cleaning (with what he believed) was an unloaded gun. Kath’s last words were "Don't worry it's not loaded" as he put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger. The guitarist and singer was killed instantly. He was 32 years old.
In 1990, Allen Collins guitarist from Lynyrd Skynyrd died of pneumonia after being ill for several months. Collins who was one of the founding members also co-wrote most of the band's songs (including Free Bird), with late front man Ronnie Van Zant. He survived a plane crash in 1977 that killed two other band members.
"Louie Louie" composer Richard Berry died in his sleep at his home in South Central Los Angeles in 1997, (age 61). Berry sold the rights to all his songs, including "Louie Louie," for $750 in 1956. Thirty years later, an artists' rights group helped him recover two-million dollars in royalties.
Associates singer, songwriter, Billy MacKenzie committed suicide in 1997 (age 39).
Soul singer Johnny Funches from The Dells died in 1998.
Born today in 1950, Danny Federici, organ and keyboard player for Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band. Died of cancer on April 17th 2008 at the age of 58. Federici had worked with Springsteen for over 40 years, including early bands Steel Mill and Child.

In 1972, Maybelle Smith, also known as 'Big Maybelle,' died in Cleveland from a diabetic coma. Her career crested as a jazz singer in the late 40's and early 50's recording some best selling records such as "Candy" and "96 Tear Drops." She was 47.
Vic Ames (Ames Brothers) died in an auto accident in 1978.
In 1978, Terry Kath, guitarist with Chicago accidentally shot himself dead while cleaning (with what he believed) was an unloaded gun. Kath’s last words were "Don't worry it's not loaded" as he put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger. The guitarist and singer was killed instantly. He was 32 years old.
In 1990, Allen Collins guitarist from Lynyrd Skynyrd died of pneumonia after being ill for several months. Collins who was one of the founding members also co-wrote most of the band's songs (including Free Bird), with late front man Ronnie Van Zant. He survived a plane crash in 1977 that killed two other band members.
"Louie Louie" composer Richard Berry died in his sleep at his home in South Central Los Angeles in 1997, (age 61). Berry sold the rights to all his songs, including "Louie Louie," for $750 in 1956. Thirty years later, an artists' rights group helped him recover two-million dollars in royalties.
Associates singer, songwriter, Billy MacKenzie committed suicide in 1997 (age 39).
Soul singer Johnny Funches from The Dells died in 1998.
Born today in 1950, Danny Federici, organ and keyboard player for Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band. Died of cancer on April 17th 2008 at the age of 58. Federici had worked with Springsteen for over 40 years, including early bands Steel Mill and Child.

Coldplay, Arctic Monkeys, Damon Albarn to sell items in auction for Haiti victims
Coldplay, the Arctic Monkeys and Blur’s Damon Albarn are donating items to be sold at a charity auction beginning Friday to raise funds for Haiti earthquake victims, auction organizers said.
The items on sale will include an offer from Albarn to record a specially written piece of music, the white electric guitar Fender Stratocaster played by Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner in the band’s first video, and Coldplay singer Chris Martin’s signed Viva La Vida tour jacket.
All proceeds will go to charity Oxfam’s work in Haiti.
The auction will be conducted on the Web site ebay starting Friday morning and run for 10 days, organizer Emily Eavis said.

"When I saw the images trickling in from Haiti, I had the same crippling sadness creeping over me as I had in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans," adds Punknews Social Media Editor Justin August. "What good is a position at a website like Punknews, with its vast reach if you don't use it for some sort of greater good?"

Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie, two of the men behind the massive hit and Grammy Record of the Year We Are the World, are set to recreate magic the day after the Grammy awards by rerecording the iconic song in response to the situation in Haiti.
We Are the World was originally recorded on January 28, 1985 after the completion of the American Music Awards. Written by Michael Jackson and Richie and produced by Jones and Michael Omartian, the recording session drew some of the biggest names of the day, including Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Kenny Rogers, Billy Joel, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Willie Nelson, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Cyndi Lauper and a host of others.
The record was released on March 7, 1985 under the group name USA for Africa and quickly rose to the top of the charts, staying at number 1 for four weeks.
This time around, Jones and Richie are hoping to make lightning strike twice by setting the recording session for Monday, February 1, the day after the Grammy Awards. They have asked many of the big artists that will be in town for the ceremony to join the session but have not disclosed who has accepted their invitation.

Ohbijou, Stars, Sigur Ros To Sing You To Sleep
Stars, Dala and Ohbijou's Casey Mecija are some of the many artists contributing to an upcoming charity album compilation entitled Sing Me To Sleep. The album will be released worldwide May 18 through American Laundromat Records.
A press release describes the album as a "whimsical collection of lullabies and non-lullabies covered by some of ALR's favorite indie artists, including Tanya Donelly, Dean & Britta, Say Hi, Telekinesis, The Real Tuesday Weld, Julie Peel, Sigur Ros, The Leisure Society, Stars and many more."
Songs include Stars covering The Smiths' "Asleep," while Mecija has a go at The Beatles' "Dear Prudence." Other songs include Dala performing "Dream A Little Dream" and Papercuts doing a cover of Don Henley's "Boys Of Summer." The album will also feature songs from films such as The Sound Of Music, The Muppet Movie and Breakfast At Tiffany's.
All proceeds from the album will be donated to The Valerie Fund, which provides support for health care for children with cancer and blood disorders.
A limited-edition first pressing CD will contain bonus tracks and the track list will vary depending on the version purchased (digital format and seven-inch blue vinyl version).

TV viewers will be able to watch a special 3D tribute to Michael Jackson at the Grammy Awards later this month.
The mini-movie, featuring the late singer's hit 'Earth Song', was originally recorded for his ill-fated comeback gigs in London last summer.
"It was one of the most important portions of the concert tour to Michael and when Michael saw the film for the first time at his last rehearsal, there were tears in his eyes," Ken Ehrlich, co-executive producer of the Grammys, said.
Viewers will have to wear special 3D glasses to watch the footage, which also appeared in the recent Jackson documentary, This Is It.
The 52nd Grammy awards take place on January 31.

DEAR JERRY: A personal Hit Parade favorite of the 1950s is “This Old House,” by Rosemary Clooney.
Yet, as many countless times I've heard it on the radio and TV, not once do I recall any explanation or history behind this most unusual composition.
Do you have any information about “This Old House,” such as whether or not there really was such a house?

DEAR CHERYL: My three-word answer, “yes to both,” is admittedly borrowed from Stuart Hamblen, writer of “This Ole House” — sometimes shown as “This Old House.”
Stuart is also the one with the original release of “This Ole House” (RCA Victor 5739), a May-June 1954 issue. The Clooney recording came out in July.
You are clearly not the only one curious as to a possible story behind this tune. With so many music lovers asking this of Hamblen, he and RCA Victor responded by making a special interview record for radio station play.
Stuart Hamblen explains thusly:
“A lot of people, upon hearing this latest song of mine, called “This Ole House,” have asked me these questions:
“They ask if there a story behind “This Ole House,” or if there a hidden meaning in “This Ole House.”
“Yes to both questions.
“The story: A friend of mine and myself were hunting up in the High Sierras. We found a little old cabin that had almost been demolished by a wild storm. The only living thing around it was a starving old hound dog. In the back room we found a little old prospector that had cashed-in his blue chips.
“As I surveyed the wreckage of the storm, the friend of mine suggested that I write a song about all of this.
“About this old house, I said. And then I got the idea. Yes, this old house!
“Later on, riding down the canyon, with the old hound dog on the pommel of my saddle, taking him in to shelter and to food, I got to thinking.
“This old house, the ones made of wood and steel, shall all come down. And this old house of mine, made of clay, it's got to go too — but there's a big difference.
“Although the wooden house, the steel house, or brick house may be scattered in the winds of a wild storm and its debris scattered over the hillside, this clay house in which I live shall be scattered too. But … the soul inside shall, in God's own good time, be gathered with the saints.
“In other words, we're all getting' ready to meet the saints.”
Though the first with a record of “This Ole House,” Hamblen's original didn't hit the charts until after Rosemary Clooney's million-selling rendition.
Other than the customary she-he pronoun switches, the major difference between the two versions is Stuart's fourth verse, which Rosemary omits:
“Now my old hound dog lies a-sleepin'
He don't know I'm gonna leave
Else he'd wake up by the fireplace
And he'd sit there and howl and grieve
But my huntin' days are over
Ain't gonna hunt the coon no more
Gabriel done brought in my chariot
When the wind blew down the door”
IZ ZAT SO? With “This Ole House” on a single backed with “Hey There” (Columbia 40266), Rosemary Clooney accomplished something done by just one other recording artist in over 52 years!
After six weeks as America's top hit, “Hey There” was replaced at No. 1 by “This Ole House.”
From the beginning of 1945 to October 1997, the only other instance of both sides of the same single being consecutively and individually ranked at No. 1 occurred in the summer of '56 with Elvis Presley's “Don't Be Cruel” and “Hound Dog.”
The tunes breaking this impressive streak are Elton John's “Candle in the Wind 1997” backed with “Something About the Way You Look Tonight” (Rocket 568108).

Mogwai are auctioning off a piano to raise money for the Haiti earthquake victims. The Kawai MP8 Mark I piano was used by Barry Burns during the band's 2006-2007 world tour.
Also included in the auction are a series of signed vinyl records, including a test pressing of the upcoming 'Special Moves' album, plus five screen printed live posters and a copy of their live film 'Burning'.
All the money raised from the sale will be split between the charities Oxfam and Doctors Without Borders. For more information, visit eBay.co.uk.
Meanwhile, Coldplay's Chris Martin and Glastonbury organiser Emily Eavis are urging people to donate money to Oxfam to help those affected by the earthquake.

U2's Bono and Jay-Z record Haiti earthquake song Singer and rapper combine for new material
U2 frontman Bono and Jay-Z, along with producer Swizz Beatz, have written and recorded a new song to benefit the victims of the recent Haiti earthquake.
Bono's bandmate, guitarist The Edge, revealed details of the collaboration on Irish radio station RTE 2FM.
Details of the song's release, title or live debut have not been revealed.
The Edge said that the trio explained: "Bono got a call from a producer, Swizz. He and Jay-Z wanted to do something for Haiti. So Bono came up with the phrase on the phone and last night we were here, we wrote a song, finished, recorded, and sent it back to them. So, that might be the next thing you hear from us."
Bono is set to be part of the 'Hope For Haiti' telethon, organised by actor George Clooney and set to take place in various locations on Friday (January 22).
The telethon will be broadcast in the UK from 1am (GMT) on Saturday morning.

Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief, the George Clooney produced special scheduled for this Friday from 8 to 10 PM ET, has announced a long list of presenters and performers. Overall, the program will feature over one hundred of the biggest names in film, television and recording in on-air testimonials and behind-the-scenes answering pledge calls.
Wyclef Jean will be hosting the proceedings in New York City with performances by Bruce Springsteen, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige, Shakira, and Sting. George Clooney will lead from Los Angeles with performances from Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, Dave Matthews, John Legend, Justin Timberlake, Stevie Wonder, Taylor Swift and a group performance by Keith Urban, Kid Rock, and Sheryl Crow. In addition, Anderson Cooper from CNN will be reporting live from Haiti while a a London feed will provide Coldplay, and a group performance by Bono, The Edge, Jay-Z, and Rihanna.
Pledges will be solicited throughout the special program and all performances will be made available on Saturday through iTunes with all proceeds benefiting the Haiti relief funds.

Some of the biggest names in music have joined forces for Download To Donate For Haiti, a star-studded recovery effort to aid the devastated nation of Haiti following the magnitude-7.0 earthquake that struck Port-au-Prince on January 12.

U2 frontman Bono and Jay-Z, along with producer Swizz Beatz, have written and recorded a new song to benefit the victims of the recent Haiti earthquake.
Bono's bandmate, guitarist The Edge, revealed details of the collaboration on Irish radio station RTE 2FM.
Details of the song's release, title or live debut have not been revealed.
The Edge said that the trio explained: "Bono got a call from a producer, Swizz. He and Jay-Z wanted to do something for Haiti. So Bono came up with the phrase on the phone and last night we were here, we wrote a song, finished, recorded, and sent it back to them. So, that might be the next thing you hear from us."
Bono is set to be part of the 'Hope For Haiti' telethon, organised by actor George Clooney and set to take place in various locations on Friday (January 22).
The telethon will be broadcast in the UK from 1am (GMT) on Saturday morning.

Springsteen, Sting, Bono, the Edge and Wonder to Perform For Hope For Haiti Now
Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief, the George Clooney produced special scheduled for this Friday from 8 to 10 PM ET, has announced a long list of presenters and performers. Overall, the program will feature over one hundred of the biggest names in film, television and recording in on-air testimonials and behind-the-scenes answering pledge calls.
Wyclef Jean will be hosting the proceedings in New York City with performances by Bruce Springsteen, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige, Shakira, and Sting. George Clooney will lead from Los Angeles with performances from Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, Dave Matthews, John Legend, Justin Timberlake, Stevie Wonder, Taylor Swift and a group performance by Keith Urban, Kid Rock, and Sheryl Crow. In addition, Anderson Cooper from CNN will be reporting live from Haiti while a a London feed will provide Coldplay, and a group performance by Bono, The Edge, Jay-Z, and Rihanna.
Pledges will be solicited throughout the special program and all performances will be made available on Saturday through iTunes with all proceeds benefiting the Haiti relief funds.

SLASH, LINKIN PARK Donate Never-Before-Released Music To Aid Haiti
Some of the biggest names in music have joined forces for Download To Donate For Haiti, a star-studded recovery effort to aid the devastated nation of Haiti following the magnitude-7.0 earthquake that struck Port-au-Prince on January 12.
Working with Music For Relief, a non-profit founded by LINKIN PARK following the 2004 Asian tsunamis, Alanis Morissette, THE ALL-AMERICAN REJECTS, DAVE MATTHEWS BAND, Enrique Iglesias, HOOBASTANK, Kenna (track co-produced by LINKIN PARK's Mike Shinoda and THE NEPTUNES' Chad Hugo), LINKIN PARK, Lupe Fiasco/Kenna (collaboration produced by Mike Shinoda), Peter Gabriel and Slash have all graciously donated never-before-released music to help raise funds and promote awareness of the recovery efforts. Shepard Fairey's Studio Number One created the project's artwork.
"Our hearts go out to the people of Haiti," said LINKIN PARK vocalist Chester Bennington. "We pray that this initiative provides some relief and support to the survivors and hope we inspire our fans, friends and families to make donations as well."
Download To Donate For Haiti provides fans with the opportunity to download a collection of exclusive songs by their favorite artists and then donate funds on a purely voluntary basis. Each download is a donation. Fans can download the unreleased songs at MusicForRelief.org and via the web sites of each participating artist.
"We're encouraging people to give what they can," says guitar legend Slash. "There's no right or wrong amount. The people of Haiti are in desperate need of food, fresh water, shelter and medical supplies and every little bit helps."
100% of funds received will go directly to the Haiti efforts. In partnership with the UN Foundation's Central Emergency Response Fund, Habitat for Humanity, and Dave Matthews BAMA Works Haitian relief efforts, Music for Relief is working to support immediate relief with food, water and emergency medical supplies as well as long-term sustainable housing solutions for the people affected by this catastrophic natural disaster.
