San Carlos fire causes $1.1 million in damage to warehouse rented by rocker Neil Young


A San Carlos warehouse filled with rock legend Neil Young's music equipment, vintage cars and other memorabilia burned in a three-alarm blaze early Tuesday, causing an estimated $1.1 million in damage.

Workers and friends of the longtime Peninsula resident spent the day moving guitars, canisters of film, framed photos and other items that had been in the warehouse at 593 Quarry Road. Young, who lives in a home near La Honda, arrived at the site late in the day and surveyed the destruction.

Investigators have ruled out arson but didn't say Tuesday what caused the fire.

The roughly 10,000-square-foot building sustained $300,000 in damage, and Young's possessions that burned were worth about $800,000, said

Bruce Springsteen: In 'Darkness' reissue, the CD that might have been

In between the game-changing albums “Born to Run” and “Darkness on the Edge of Town,” Bruce Springsteen’s career was derailed by legal turmoil and artistic indecisiveness.

The struggle is documented on a six-disc box set, “The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story” (Columbia), which presents the original 1978 album in remastered form and supplements it with dozens of outtakes and three DVDs containing live performances and a documentary.

“Darkness” was not Springsteen’s most popular album, yielding only one minor top-40 hit (it was far outsold by Springsteen’s 1984 blockbuster “Born in the U.S.A.” and the 1975 “Born to Run”). But “Darkness” stands as his leanest, hardest-hitting album with the E Street Band, and – at least for this listener -- his best. The tour that followed, as captured on a DVD of a typically galvanizing Houston concert, was even better. Springsteen’s ascent to stadium-rock icon hit over-drive.

What’s less appreciated about the era chronicled on “Promise” is the large volume of exceptional music that didn’t make the final cut, left to languish unheard except for a few live performances and covers by other artists -- until now. The box set’s most crucial addition to the Springsteen canon is the album that might have been (available separately as a two-CD set, “The Promise”); one completely different in tone and intent than “Darkness” but well worth hearing.

STRATOVARIUS To Release New Full-Length This January

Finnish melodic metal troupe STRATOVARIUS are readying to unleash their thirteenth studio album, Elysium, this winter. Recorded at 5-By-5 studios in Pitäjänmäki, Helsinki, Finland, the nine-track full-length will be released in the US and Canada January 18, 2011 through Armoury Records and features cover art by Gyula Havancsák.

Elysium will mark the debut of newest addition: 27-year-old Finnish guitarist Matias Kupiainen. Said drummer Jörg Michael of the band's newest recruit: "In Matias we found a new character who fits perfectly with his way of melodic guitar shredding. He is a killer player, a 'wunderkind' from Finland!"

Polaris, STRATOVARIUS' 2009 "come back" offering and first since the departure or guitarist/main composer Timo Tolkki, was reissued as a two-CD digipak earlier this year via Armoury Records. In addition to the original album, the package includes a bonus disc containing 75 minutes of live material recorded during the Polaris tour spanning the band's entire history.

Nashville Musician Re-Uses Vinyl Records as Roof Shingles

People find interesting ways to recycle and use old, unplayable vinyl for a variety of things (clocks, purses, art), but this takes the cake:

According to Jazz.com, Nashville-based musician Matt Glassmeyer has fashioned a roof for his porch using 350 damaged records. In lieu of traditional shingles, this newly fashioned roof features a set of records aligned in a uniform, overlapping pattern. Matt’s design is a great homegrown project that gives dumpster-destined materials a second life while touching on the rich musical culture of Nashville.

Drive-By Truckers Announce New Album

Southern rock institution Drive-By Truckers released their last album, The Big To-Do, earlier this year, and they've already got another one all loaded up and ready to go. ATO will release the new one, Go-Go Boots, on February 15. The band once again worked with longtime producer David Barbe, and in a press release, frontman Patterson Hood "semi-jokingly" calls the LP "our country, soul, and murder ballad album."

Thom Yorke-Featuring 'Two Minutes Silence' Storms UK Singles Chart

A two minute song which actually features nothing but silence is on course to debut inside the top-20 on the UK singles chart this weekend. The track has released by the British Legion's Poppy Appeal.  It includes a video that features Radiohead's Thom Yorke, Plan B, The Saturdays and prime minister David Cameron.

All proceeds from the sales of 'Two Minute Silence' will go towards helping members of the armed forces and their families.

DEAR JERRY: In your recent coverage of the tamouré you mentioned how the record company (Philips) had a dance contest, with the winners getting a free trip to Tahiti.

That reminded me of another record company contest, one described on an insert coupon that I found many years ago in a stack of old 78s. The headline reads: “Paramount Masked Marvel Contest Entry Blank.”

Unfortunately, this little entry form was loose, but some text offers a clue as to which record it came with:

“I have listened to one of your Paramount records, No. 12805 by the Masked Marvel, and am herewith listing what I think is his correct name. It is understood that if I have given the correct name you will send me free one Paramount record, and my choice in case I win is: No. (Paramount number goes here).

“This blank to be mailed on or before Oct. 15, 1929 to: The New York Recording Laboratories, Port Washington, Wisconsin.”

Also shown is a drawing of a man, who looks like Fred Astaire, dressed semi-formal but wearing a Lone Ranger mask. Is Astaire the Masked Marvel? Do I win a free record?

DEAR HANNAH: It isn't every day I hear from someone whose name is a palindrome (still waiting for mail from Anna and Ogopogo).

Sorry, no free record.

Despite the familiar warning from Jim Croce, when we pull the mask off the ol' Masked Marvel we reveal … Charley (a.k.a. Charlie) Patton.

Even without the mask, it is unlikely anyone would get a clue from a drawing that looks more like generic clip-art than either Fred Astaire or Charley Patton.

The need to hear the Masked Marvel in order to identify him, coupled with a very assertive advertising campaign, brought customers into record stores in droves. There they could listen to the mystery record, grab some entry forms, and see a list of other Paramount releases from which winners could take their pick.

Concurrently, Paramount ran display ads in the print media, primarily the Chicago Defender (motto: “The World's Greatest Weekly - The Mouthpiece of 14 Million [black] People”).

Unlike the over-the-counter blank forms, newspaper ads included both song titles: “Screamin' and Hollerin' the Blues,” and “Mississippi Boweavil Blues.” The B-side is the genesis of all boll weevil tunes, the best-known being “The Boll Weevil Song” by Brook Benton.

In music, whether 1929 or 1961, cotton farmers still conversed with malicious anthonomus grandis out “looking for a home.”

Print ads even provided this “helpful hint,” one about as helpful as saying the singer is a male: “The Masked Marvel is an exclusive Paramount artist.” Did anyone really think otherwise?

The ads also offered the Masked Marvel record with an entry form, mailed C.O.D., which accounted for most of the sales.

“Send no money! Pay the postman 75-cents for each record ordered, plus a small C.O.D. fee when he delivers the records,” reads the mail-order coupon. Back then, all postmen (mailmen; salesmen; milkmen; breadmen; icemen; servicemen; etc., etc.) were men — woMEN being the exception.

It sure worked. Paramount's first pressing of 10,000 copies soon sold out, a huge success for unknown songs by an unidentified singer. It was all about the contest, and the chance to win a free 75-cent record.

Making things a bit of a challenge is that Charley was still unknown to most folks. Before the Masked Marvel release, he made only two records.

The first is properly credited to Charley Patton, “Pony Blues” (Paramount 12792), but for “Prayer of Death, Parts 1 & 2” (Paramount 12799) he uses the pseudonym Elder J.J. Hadley.

Then again, the Masked Marvel's distinctively unintelligible, yet passionate, vocal style may have been the clincher for some, even with “Pony Blues” as the only basis for comparison. For the record, they also accepted J.J. Hadley as a correct answer.

Fact is, no one sounded like Charley Patton. Not then, not ever.

Second and subsequent pressings of No. 12805, with no mention of the Masked Marvel or the contest, all credit Charley Patton.


IZ ZAT SO? First issues (Masked Marvel) of Paramount 12805 have recently sold in the $6,000 to $7,500 range.

The other 25 Charley Patton 78s, be they Paramount (20) or Vocalion (5), are a bit of a bargain — only $3,000 to $4,000.

With a retail price of 75-cents in 1929 (about $9.30 in today's money), how many Charley Patton 78s do you wish you or your parents would have bought and kept?

Hi-Speed Soul to reissue landmark 1990s album Gentlemen on vinyl

The Afghan Whigs’ landmark album 'Gentlemen' will be reissued on 180 gram vinyl by San Diego’s Hi-Speed Soul Records on January 25, 2011. The release will feature the complete studio album as well as a full color lyric sheet.

'Gentlemen' has been considered by music critics and Afghan Whigs’ fans the world over as the band’s masterpiece featuring quintessential songs like “Debonair,” “Gentlemen” and “What Jail Is Like.” As The Afghan Whigs’ major label debut (originally released by Elektra Records) 'Gentlemen' was cinematic in its scope and more ambitious than anything The Afghan Whigs had released to date. Almost the antithesis to the 90s Grunge movement, 'Gentlemen' retained The Afghan Whigs’ trademark R&B and soul influences. Despite receiving support from MTV and modern rock radio, the band remained largely a cult favorite. 'Gentlemen' appeared on numerous “best of” lists for 1993 as well the 1990s as a whole.

Producer, songwriter and co-founder of Atlantic records Herb Abramson died in 1999. Wrote and produced Tommy Tucker's 1964 hit "High Heeled Sneakers."

Davey Goldsworthy, singer and guitarist with UK band The Chesterfields, died in 2003 after being involved in a hit-a-run accident in Oxford.

In 2008, Miriam Makeba, the South African singer who reached #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1967 with "Pata Pata" suffered a fatal heart attack at the age of 76. Among her many notable achievements was becoming the first African woman to win a Grammy, for Best Folk Recording in 1966 with Harry Belafonte for "An Evening With Belafonte / Makeba."


History:

In 1955, the Everly Brothers made their first studio recordings, cutting four tracks in 22 minutes at Nashville's Old Tulane Hotel studios.

Buddy Holly began his first tour in 1956, opening for George Jones and Hank Locklin.

In 1957, "Jailhouse Rock" and "Wake Up Little Susie" were the #1 and #2 songs On Billboard's Pop, Country and R&B charts simultaneously.

In 1958, Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog," exceeded three million copies sold in the USA, becoming only the third single to do so. Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" & "Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer" by Gene Autry being the other two.

Johnny Mathis started a five-week run at #1 on the US album chart in 1959 with 'Heavenly.'

In 1959, Billboard Magazine stated that this was "one of the most frantic weeks in the history of the music business," as the government probe into disc jockey payola steps up.

Also in 1959, RCA executives offered a guarantee of $100,000 to Sam Cooke in an effort to lure him to their label when his Keen Records contract expires.

Brian Epstein saw The Beatles playing live for the first time during a lunchtime session at The Cavern Liverpool in 1961. He had been getting requests at his NEMS music store for a record called "My Bonnie." After several more visits, Epstein would offer to manage the group, which he did until his death in 1967.

Elvis Presley had his 9th UK #1 with single in 1961 with "His Latest Flame / Little Sister."

Motown Records released "You've Really Got a Hold on Me," by the Miracles in 1962.

The Kingsmen's classic, "Louie, Louie" was released in the US in 1963. It will enter the Hot 100 near the end of November and peak at #2 in early January.



If all the "Paul is dead" theories were correct, then today, in 1966, would have been the day he died.

John Lennon met Yoko Ono for the first time in 1966 when he visited her art exhibition 'Unfinished Paintings and Objects' at the Indica Gallery in London. She supposedly didn't know who Lennon was. The two wouldn't get together until 1968.

In a move which is later described by both sides as being conflicting egos, Roger McGuinn expels David Crosby from the Byrds in 1967. Crosby was replaced by Gene Clark, an original member of the group returning after two years away. The next year Crosby, Stills, and Nash was formed.

Infuriated by an unfavorable review of The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” Jann Werner decides to write his own review and publish it. In the process he creates Rolling Stone magazine. 1967. The first issue of Rolling Stone Magazine was published in San Francisco in 1967. It featured a photo of John Lennon on the cover, dressed in army fatigues while acting in his recent film, 'How I Won the War' and the first issue had a free roach clip to hold a marijuana joint. The name of the magazine was compiled from three significant sources: the Muddy Waters song, the first rock ’n’ roll record by Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones.

In 1968, Led Zeppelin played their first ever London show when they appeared at The Roundhouse, Chalk Farm. On the same bill as John Lee Hooker, Deviants, John James and Tyres. Zeppelin singer Robert Plant married his girlfriend Maureen in London on this day and held the reception at the gig.

Also in 1968, a US Army captain was quoted in Rolling Stone Magazine as saying "Rock and Roll music contributes to both the usage of drugs and the high VD rate among enlisted men in the army today."

In 1969 Simon and Garfunkel record what would become their signature tune, "Bridge Over Troubled Water," with future member of Bread, Larry Knechtel on piano. Art wanted Paul to sing the song, but Paul insisted that Art's voice was better suited for it. It was a decision that Paul would later say he regretted.

The Grateful Dead played the first of three nights at the Winterland Arena, San Francisco, California in 1973.

Cat Stevens made his national TV debut on ABC's "In Concert."

After years of struggling as a member of two New York area bands, The Hassels and Attila, and as a bar room piano player, Billy Joel released what will ultimately be his breakthrough album, "Piano Man" in 1973. The title song will be released as a single and become a Top Twenty-five hit early next year.

In 1974, Randy Bachman, the former lead guitarist for The Guess Who, enjoyed a number one song with his new band, Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Randy stuttered through the lyrics of "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" on a demo recording as a private joke about his brother Gary, who had a speech impediment. The record company liked that take better than the non-stuttering version and released it. The song not only gave the band their third US top thirty hit and a #2 in the UK, Gary Bachman stopped stammering.



David Bowie appeared on Cher's CBS TV show in 1975.

Carole King scored her third US #1 album in 1974 with 'Wrap Around Joy.'

In the wake of the reformed Fleetwood Mac's success with their latest, self-titled album, one of the band's earlier LPs, 'Mystery to Me' goes Gold in 1976.

Jan Hammer went to #1 on the US singles chart in 1985 with the "Miami Vice Theme."

In 1990, the internal revenue seized all of US country singers Willie Nelson's bank accounts and real estate holdings in connection with a $16million tax debt.

Prince and the New Power Generation started a two week run at #1 on the US singles chart in 1991 with "Cream."

In 1991, Richard Marx played in five cities in 1 day during a 'Rush-n Rush Out, Street Tour.' Marx appeared in Baltimore, New York City, Cleveland, Chicago and Burbank Airport.

In1993, the Dave Matthews Band released their first album, ‘Remember Two Things’ on the Bama Rags label.

Blackstreet featuring Dr Dre started a four week run at #1 on the US singles chart in 1996 with "No Diggity."

Van Halen went to No.1 on the US album chart in 1996 with 'Best Of Vol 1.'

The Firm were at #1 on the US album chart in 1997 with ‘The Album’ (featuring Nas, Foxy Brown, Az and Nature).

In 1998, singer Billy Preston, his manager Merle Otis Greene and Greene's wife Sandra were indicted on 22 charges of fraud in collecting $1 million in insurance claims.

Also in 1998 - Michael Jackson settled a lawsuit over stories and pictures in the London Daily Mirror that said his face had been disfigured by cosmetic surgery. A lawyer for the publisher said, "The photographs were taken honestly and were not tampered with, but the Mirror has since met with the plaintiff in person and acknowledges that the photographs do not accurately represent the plaintiff's true appearance."

In 1999, the Recording Industry Association of America announces their Artists Of The Century. The Beatles top the list for US sales of over 106 million albums. Garth Brooks was named most successful male artist (89 million albums sold) and Barbra Streisand the most successful female artist. (62 million albums sold). Elvis Presley had the most Gold and Platinum singles with 77, to go along with his 80 Gold and Platinum albums. Elton John's "Candle In The Wind" (Princess Diana version) is the best selling single of all time and the Eagles "Greatest Hits 1971 - 1975" is the record holder for best selling album.

Gary Glitter appeared at Bristol Crown Court, England in 1999, charged with seducing and sexually humiliating a 14 year-old girl. The charges related back to 1980. Pig....

The Beatles launched their official internet web site, www.thebeatles.com in 2000.

In 2002, viewers of the UK music channel VH1 voted "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston as the number 1 most romantic song ever. In second place Elvis Presley, "You Were Always On My Mind" and third place went to "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion.

In 2004, a Dutch man was jailed for nine months for harassing former Spice Girl Melanie Chisholm. The unnamed 39-year-old sent the singer parcels, letters and tapes during 2001. Dutch police searched the man's home after he tried to hand-deliver a parcel to Ms Chisholm's London home.

"Queen On Fire: Live At The Bowl," was released in 2004. The show documents Queen`s 1982 concert at London`s Milton Keynes Bowl and was originally broadcast on British Television and MTV. The concert includes "We Will Rock You," "Fat Bottomed Girls," "Another One Bites The Dust" and "We Are The Champions."

The Rolling Stones accepted two trophies at the third annual Billboard Touring Awards in New York in 2006. They nailed the Top Tour category and Top Draw award. Their A Bigger Bang jaunt drew 2 million fans and earned nearly $230 million between 12/01/05 and 9/29/06.

Queens Of The Stone Age were kicked out of a Los Angeles rehab clinic in 2007 after staff objected to their lyrics. QOTSA played an intimate set for patients but the sound is cut part way through their opening number, "Feel Good Hit Of The Summer," which features a chorus of "Nicotine, Valium, Vicodin, marijuana, ecstasy and alcohol, c-c-c-c-c-cocaine." The group was physically ejected from the facility. Ummm, great song choice fellas.....

Kid Rock wins the World's Best Pop Male Artist and World's Best Pop/Rock Male Artist prizes at the World Music Awards in Monaco in 2008. He also performed at the event. In addition, The Beatles received a Diamond Award for selling more the 100 million albums worldwide. Ringo Starr was on hand to accept the trophy on behalf of the group.

Kozmic Blues: The Life and Music of Janis Joplin, a weeklong presentation of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum's 2009 American Music Masters series, begins in Cleveland. There are Joplin tribute performances and interviews with people who knew and/or worked with the singer. "I am touched, as is the rest of the family, that Janis' musical and social power continue to inspire and remain important in the lives of so many," says Joplin's sister, Laura.

Cooking Vinyl Records has announced the signing of MARILYN MANSON.

Having already sold over 50 million records worldwide, Cooking Vinyl overcame fierce competition from several labels in the U.S. and U.K., both major and independent, to release what will be MARILYN MANSON's eighth studio album.

The global deal will see the album issued via MARILYN MANSON's own label — Hell, etc. — in a joint venture between Cooking Vinyl, with the album slated for release in 2011.

After parting ways with Interscope Records, the new partnership with Cooking Vinyl gives MARILYN MANSON an unprecedented degree of creative control. The new setup will see the artist take charge of delivering the completed, mastered album and Cooking Vinyl handling worldwide distribution, marketing and promotion.

Famed for his originality and style, not only in the studio and on stage but also in his elaborate video and thought-provoking filmmaking, the latest studio instalment will again pair up Manson and Twiggy Ramirez.

Manson had this to say: "We will always be our worst audience, until we stop being an audience and start being an artist. Any art is flesh and blood, no matter how you perform, decorate or display it. But we all want the passionate horror of that blood. And blood is what I am here to bring."

The deal is a landmark signing for Cooking Vinyl, and follows the company's huge commercial success with THE PRODIGY, whose "Invaders Must Die" was the best-selling independent release in Europe in 2009.

Cooking Vinyl founder Martin Goldschmidt added: "We're delighted to welcome MARILYN MANSON to Cooking Vinyl. Often our 'relaxed' approach to A&R brings out killer performances and albums from artists. I can't wait to hear what Manson comes up with. This is a landmark signing for us. We shook up folk music in the late 80's/90's with MICHELLE SHOCKED, COWBOY JUNKIES and BILLY BRAGG, we have shaken up dance in the last couple of years with THE PRODIGY, GROOVE ARMADA and UNDERWORLD, and we are ready for a new adventure with Mr. Manson."

In an October 29 interview with "The Blairing Out With Eric Blair Show", MARILYN MANSON bassist Twiggy Ramirez (real name: Jeordie White) stated about the band's forthcoming CD, "It's almost done. It'll probably be out next year. It's fantastic. It's our best record yet, I think. I mean, everyone always says that, but I think this is our best work so far. . . It's kind of like a little more of a punk rock 'Mechanical Animals' [MARILYN MANSON's third album, which came out in 1998] without sounding too pretentious."

MARILYN MANSON last year parted ways with longtime record label Interscope following the disappointing sales performance of the shock-rocker's latest album, entitled "The High End Of Low".

Iron & Wine to Release Kiss Each Other Clean January 25th, 2011
Track Listing and New Tour Dates Announced

BURBANK, CA--(Marketwire - November 8, 2010) - Iron & Wine will release Kiss Each Other Clean on January 25th, 2011. The first new music in more than three years from the band led by Sam Beam will be made available through Warner Bros. Records in North America and 4AD in Europe, Japan, and Australia.

Kiss Each Other Clean's opening track, "Walking Far From Home," will be released on 12" vinyl and as a CD single that is sold exclusively through independent retailers in conjunction with "Back to Black Friday" on November 26th, in which independent record stores will be the only source for several exclusive new releases across the country.

Two new show dates have been added to the Iron & Wine tour, including Radio City Music Hall in New York on January 29th and the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles on January 25th -- the date the album is released. Tickets for both shows go on sale Friday, November 12th. The band also recently announced a select nine-date tour, which begins November 13th in St. Louis. The South Carolina-born, Texas-based Beam announced himself as a classic American tunesmith with a precocious musical signature on Iron & Wine's epically sparse debut album in 2002, The Creek Drank the Cradle. Followed by 2003's The Sea & The Rhythm EP, 2004 brought both the full-length Our Endless Numbered Days, along with Beam's gentle rendering of The Postal Service's "Such Great Heights," featured on the Garden State soundtrack. The late Mary Travers of Peter, Paul and Mary was born in 1937. In 2005, Travers was diagnosed with leukemia. Although a bone marrow transplant apparently slowed the progression of the disease, Travers died on September 16, 2009.




History:

Eddie Cochran made his UK chart debut in 1958 with "Summertime Blues." It reached #18 in the UK & #8 in the US.

The Beatles went to Ireland in 1963 to make their only two appearances ever in the country playing two shows at the Adelphi Cinema, Dublin. The group hooked up with screenwriter Alun Owen, who had been appointed to write the screenplay for The Beatles' first (as yet untitled) motion picture. Owen spent three days with The Beatles observing their hectic, lifestyle.

Reg Dwight (Elton John) and his song writing partner Bernie Taupin signed to DJM publishing in 1967, their signatures had to be witnessed by their parents because they were both under 21 years of age. Taupin answered an advertisement for a lyric writer placed in the New Musical Express, the pair have since collaborated on over 30 albums.

In 1967, the Beatles finished recording "Blue Jay Way," "Flying" and "Magical Mystery Tour." The Beatles have only six songs, not enough for an album, so it was decided to issue a double-EP. Capitol Records didn’t think the double-EP format would be acceptable for the US market, so they decide to put out an album instead. The six "Magical Mystery Tour" songs with five of the six songs from The Beatles' 1967 singles went on side two.

The Doors were banned from Phoenix in 1968 due to singer Jim Morrison’s behavior. He reportedly mooned the audience. Nice Jim......

The Rolling Stones kicked off their 6th North American tour at Fort Collins state University, Colorado in 1969. This is the tour that includes a stop at Altamont.  Also on the bill, Ike and Tina Turner, Chuck Berry and BB King.

Led Zeppelin released their third album in 1970, which features a distinctive pinwheel revolving cover. It entered the UK chart at #1 and spends a total of 40 weeks in the Top 75.

In 1970, MGM Records dropped 18 acts (including MOR performers the Cowsills, Connie Francis and Judy Garland’s back catalog) for allegedly promoting drug use. Eric Burdon, now fronting the successful War, freely admits drug use. He was not dropped because his group was still selling records, making a mockery of the whole exercise.

In 1974, Ted Nugent won a National Squirrel-shooting contest after picking off a squirrel at 150 yards. The heavy metal guitarist also shot dead 27 other mammals during the three day event. Get 'em Ted!

A new world record was set in 1975 for continuous guitar string plucking by Steve Anderson who played for 114 hours 17 minutes.

Elton John started a three week run at #1 on the US album chart in 1975 with 'Rock Of The Westies', the singers seventh US #1.

Hall and Oates started a two week run at #1 on the US singles chart in 1981 with "Private Eyes," the duo's third US #1 hit.

In 1986, Willie Nelson made a guest appearance the series "Miami Vice" as a corrupt policeman.

Bruce Springsteen went to #1 on the US album chart in 1987 with 'Tunnel Of Love.'

In 1987, Tiffany became the youngest act to score a US #1 since Michael Jackson ("Ben" in 1972) with "I Think we're Alone Now."

John Fogerty won his self-plagiarism court battle with Fantasy Records in 1988. The label claimed Fogerty copied his own song, "Run Through The Jungle" when he wrote "The Old Man Down The Road".

In 1991, Frank Zappa announced that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Alice in Chains released "Alice in Chains" on CD and cassette in 1995. The album was only available in a vinyl edition until this release.

Nirvana”s 'Incesticide' a collection of early recordings, out-takes and BBC sessions earned a platinum record in 1995.

Black Sabbath’s 'Reunion album peaked at #11 on the US chart in 1998.

12 Guns N' Roses fans were arrested during a riot after a gig in Vancouver was cancelled in 2002. Promoters pulled the gig after Axl Rose's flight from Los Angeles was delayed.

In 2002, Whitney Houston's husband, Bobby Brown was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana, speeding, driving without a licence and having no proof of insurance after he was stopped by police in Atlanta City.

The Rolling Stones play Hong Kong for the first time in 2003.

Robert Plant headlined a tribute concert to Blues icon Leadbelly at the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame and Museum in Cleveland in 2004.

R. Kelly and Jay-Z went to #1 on the US album chart in 2004with 'Unfinished Business.'

Foo Fighters released an acoustic live album 'Skin And Bones' in 2006. The 15-track collection, recorded in L.A., features songs from the unplugged half of their "In Your Honor" double album, classic Foo songs and a version of the Dave Grohl sung Nirvana B-side "Marigold."

The Who's Roger Daltrey and Cream's Jack Bruce participate in the Rock N' Roll Fantasy Camp's 10th anniversary celebration in Las Vegas in 2007. At the end of the five-day camp participants and pros perform together at the Vegas House of Blues.

Limited distribution doesn't slow down the Eagles "Long Road Out Of Eden" in 2007. Selling over 700,000 copies in its first week of release, the album was #1 on the Billboard 200. The set was available exclusively at Wal-Mart and Sam's Club outlets, as well as the group's web site. Later, the Eagles perform "How Long" at the 41st annual Country Music Association Awards.  "From the early '70s, this group has defined Country Rock, and more than three decades later they are still creating music that resonates with our audience," says the CMA’s Tammy Genovese. It's the group's first-ever appearance at an awards show.



Bruce Springsteen appears at Stand Up For Heroes: A Benefit for the Bob Woodruff Family Fund in New York in 2007. As part of the event a Harley-Davidson motorcycle owned and signed by Springsteen is auctioned off for $85,000. Proceeds go toward assisting injured U.S. soldiers.

To celebrate 'Astral Weeks' 40th anniversary, Van Morrison performed his classic album in its entirety during a two-show engagement at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles in 2008. The singer was backed by the same ensemble of jazz musicians that played on the original ’68 recording.

In 2008, KISS bassist-singer Gene Simmons won $500,000 for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation during his appearance on FOX's 'Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?' That’s a record sum earned by a celebrity guest on the game show. Cool....

Capsule Labs is a true vinyl presser, while we outsource the electroplating and the printing of labels and jackets, everything else is handled in house, from the mastering and cutting of lacquers, to the pressing and packaging, where we can control the quality and customize the process.

100% VIRGIN VINYL
Record manufacturing creates excess vinyl which gets trimmed off the edge. Almost every pressing plant regrinds this vinyl and mixes it in with virgin vinyl in their production chain. If not done properly, this introduces foreign elements in the vinyl (fluff) which ends up affecting the quality of the final record.

We only use 100% virgin vinyl at Capsule Labs and collaborate with local artists to recycle our excess vinyl into art instead, we will be featuring some of the vinyl art on our website soon.

Vinyl mastering consists of optimizing the final mastered song for the unique characteristics of the vinyl format which include low and high frequency treatment, level adjustment, groove spacing optimization, and if necessary, low-end summing to eliminate undesirable phasing that can occur from stereo effects in the bass frequencies on vinyl.

Our engineer Gil Tamazyan then cuts 10" or 14" master lacquers for 7" and 12" releases respectively, as well as 7" or 12" reference discs, on our custom modified Neumann VMS 66 cutting lathe. We take great care in optimizing the groove spacing and cutting depth to give you the loudest, cleanest cut vinyl allows for your runtime.

About United Record Pressing

United Record Pressing, LLC (URP) began in Nashville, Tennessee in 1949, when it was known by the name Southern Plastics. One of Southern Plastics top clients was Vee Jay Records out of Chicago. It was Vee Jay that pressed the first Beatles 7"s in America, prior to Capitol signing them. In 1962, Southern Plastics relocated to the current site of United Record Pressing which is the same location that pressed those Beatles 7"s.

Southern Plastics would eventually change its name to United Record Pressing in 1971.

In addition to the numerous important records that have been pressed in this plant, United managed to create a little history on its own. When the current URP plant opened in the 1960's it was a very different time in the South, Nashville included. In the early 60's there were hardly any restaurants or hotels in Nashville that would offer their services to African Americans. With top clients like Vee Jay Records and Motown being run by people of color, the company was in need of accommodations for their clients and created what we now call the "Motown Suite", an apartment located above the factory. The Motown Suite which is still viewable to guests touring the plant, displays the same furnishings that these execs were offered including a common room with a bar, a turntable, enough seating to entertain guests, a full bathroom, a double occupancy bedroom, a kitchen equipped with an old push button stove and other novel 60's decor. URP still uses the kitchen as a meeting room, with our staff sitting at the same 60's dinette set that Motown, Vee Jay and other label executives and artists used. Another feature of historical significance is the party room, located just steps from the Motown Suite. This large room was once used as an event room and hosted record label signing parties for folks including Wayne Newton, The Cowsills and a then 16 year old Hank Williams Jr. Currently, the party room functions as a museum of Southern Plastics / United Record Pressing's historical significance along with a brief history of recorded music. The museum room still pays tribute to the party room's history by featuring some of the original furniture from its heyday.

Pearl Jam To Release Live Album 'Live On Ten Legs'

Pearl Jam have recently announced details of a new live album called ‘Live On Ten Legs. The 18-track LP, due out on January 17, will features song recorded between 2003 and 2010 by band engineer John Burton.  Pearl Jam released their last live album ‘Love On Two Legs’ in 1998. They released their last studio album 'Backspacer' last year.

The Dears to Release Degeneration Street

Montreal rockers The Dears have announced the release of their new album, 'Degeneration Street.' The releases finds Murray Lightburn, Natalia Yanchak, Patrick Krief, Robert Benvie, Roberto Arquilla and Jeff Luciani creating a sweeping collection of orchestral rock that is at once enlightening, angst-ridden and mesmerizing. Set for a February 15th release on Dangerbird Records, the signature sound of The Dears was captured and produced by Tony Hoffer (Phoenix, Belle and Sebastian).

Hot Topic have announced they will be pressing Blink-182's debut album, 'Cheshire Cat', on vinyl in December. The release will be limited to 2000 copies and will be pressed on blue/yellow swirl vinyl.

Bluegrass Great Jimmy Gaudreau Releases “Pieces And Bits” Album On Goose Creek Music Record LableL

I've been to many, many concerts and the one that stands out for me was a bluegrass festival I went to in the late 70's. I went there with low expectations, but left with a new understanding of the genre and I was awestuck at some of the performances, man they could pick. It was lawn seating and believe it or not, lots of pipes were passed around which made my day :O)

The album is co-produced by Jimmy Gaudreau and Stuart Martin, and was recorded over a period of two years at Stonebridge Studios, a full-service music recording studio near Leesburg, Virginia. The songs are primarily instrumentals, and feature an appearance by virtuoso jazz guitarist Frank Vignola, as well as support from noted bluegrass players Mike Auldridge, Moondi Klein, Orrin Star, Jens Kruger, and many others. Talking about the album’s “Pieces and Bits” title, Gaudreau describes the “Pieces” as fully instrumented production numbers, while the “Bits” are bare bones versions of shorter tunes. The recordings demonstrate the dazzling Bluegrass mandolin and guitar work for which Gaudreau has become known, but also touch on influences from Jazz, Blues, Celtic, and Folk music. Stuart Martin, Goose Creek's chief sound engineer, co-produced the project and worked closely with Gaudreau to get the right natural tone for every instrument, from octave mandolin to 12-string, archtop acoustic, and flattop guitars.

Jimmy Gaudreau has long been regarded as one of the top Bluegrass performers in the world. Since getting the call in 1969 to move to the Washington, DC area from his native Rhode Island and join the legendary Country Gentlemen band, he has performed with a veritable Who's Who of Bluegrass bands and earned a reputation as a mandolin maverick with a sound and a style all his own.

In addition to two stints with the Country Gentlemen, Gaudreau has also performed with JD Crowe and the New South, with The Tony Rice Unit (for 9 years), and with his own bands Country Store, Spectrum (with Bela Fleck), Chesapeake, and Auldridge, Bennett & Gaudreau. He is a former member of the Country Gentlemen Reunion Band with Randy Waller, Eddie Adcock, and Tom Gray and was a part of Carolina Star with leader John Starling, and bandmates Mike Auldridge, Rickie Simpkins and Tom Gray. Jimmy also has performed in duos with Jack Lawrence and Orrin Star and Moondi Klein.

In 2005, Gaudreau was inducted into the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America's "Hall of Greats" and featured in a Mandolin Magazine cover story. In 2008, Gaudreau and Moondi Klein opened for Emmylou Harris during her summer tour series.
