Vinyl records sales see growth

As much of the music industry sees declining or flattening sales, there is one medium bucking the trend.

In 2010 vinyl records saw an increase in sales by 14 percent, according to Neilsen SoundScan, an industry analysis company. According to this report, vinyl was the fastest-growing format with 2.8 million units sold.

But those numbers need to be taken in perspective. Even with this increase, vinyl only accounted for less than one percent of the year’s total album sales.

Still, this format that was once the norm, seems to have remade its mark on the industry.

In Cheyenne, Wyo., Ernie November has been selling records for 15 years.

Located in the heart of Wyoming’s capitol city, the store is a bastion for those who are looking for something interesting and new for their ears.

About a decade back, Radio & Gramophone House in Connaught Place, one of the oldest music shops in the city, did away with the shelf displaying Long Play (LP) records. About two months back, it restored its exclusive LP shelf, now full with recently released LPs of both western and Hindi film music. “We restored our vinyl shelf because now there is a sudden spurt of interest in LPs. Many of those who approach us are youngsters who have dusted off old LP players bought by their father and grandfathers. In the past month alone, we have sold dozens of LPs and new players,” says Rishi Jain of Radio & Gramophone House, set up in 1951 by his grandfather.

Jain is not exaggerating. Long play records are staging a quiet comeback, with top music shops across the city once again storing and selling them.

Landmark, the largest book and music retailer, has a rack devoted to LPs at both its Delhi and Gurgaon outlets......

Kate Bush releasing new 'Director's Cut' album in May

Kate Bush has re-recorded some of her old material for release on a new album this May. The elusive singer is said to be revisiting a selection of songs from her 1989 album 'The Sensual World' and 1993's 'The Red Shoes'. The new record will be named 'Director's Cut' and will come out on May 16.

The album will be released digitally, on a CD, on vinyl and in a case-bound book.

Foo Fighters releasing covers album for Record Store Day

Foo Fighters are scheduled to release a 'covers' album to help celebrate Record Store Day. The album, 'Medium Rare,' will be released on vinyl in stores for the April 16th celebration. Among the covers on the record are versions of Pink Floyd, Prince and Paul McCartney and Wings tracks that the band have played live previously.

Steely Dan Announce North American Tour

Steely Dan have announced the initial North American dates for the duo’s forthcoming “Shuffle Diplomacy Twenty Eleven” tour. The trek kicks off on July 2 at Seattle’s WaMu Theater, and wraps up with a six-night residency at New York’s Beacon Theater. As was the case with the duo’s 2009 “Rent Party Tour,” the forthcoming shows will mix greatest hits with deeper cuts. In addition, in select cities, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker and their backing band will perform classic Steely Dan albums in their entirety

In 1966, the Levi Strauss Company began selling bell-bottom blue jeans in the US. cool....

In 1969, Paul McCartney married Linda Eastman at Marylebone Register Office, London. They then held a reception lunch at The Ritz Hotel. Paul went to the recording studio in the evening to work. George Harrison and his wife Patti were arrested on the same day and charged with possession of marijuana. The charge was cannabis resin possession after authorities found 120 joints in their house.

In 1974, John Lennon made headlines after an incident at the Troubadour Club, Los Angeles. Out on a drinking binge with Harry Nilsson, Lennon hurled insults at the performing Smothers Brothers before being forcibly removed. Nilsson, a good friend of Tom Smothers, thought he was helping the act because Tom had struggled through weak material at an earlier date.

The R.E.M. album "Out of Time" was released in 1991.



The album "Unplugged" was released by KISS in 1996.

In 2001, Judy Garland’s “Over the Rainbow” was voted Song of the Century in a poll published in America. Musicians, critics and fans compiled the list by the RIAA. The highest placed U.K. act was The Rolling Stones with “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” in 16th place. The Beatles’ “I Want to Hold Your Hand” came in at #28.

In 2008, seven years of trying to secure the rights to use the Lennon-McCartney catalog paid off for TV's American Idol, when over 31 million viewers tuned in to the show. The following day, the top five Google searches were also Beatle related.

Taj's Second Album With Bonus Tracks

Henry Saint Clair Fredericks A/K/A Taj Mahal grew up in Harlem, spent time as a teenager on a Massachusetts dairy farm, attended U of M, gigged around and finally headed west and built a musical career first in Los Angeles and later in the Bay area. The life influences come through in his music: a mix of urban and country blues mixed with world music.

Taj's first break came when he joined with Ry Cooder and formed The Rising Sons. The group signed with Columbia records and recorded a Terry Melcher-produced album that was never released. It's since come out on Sony/Legacy. Sundazed issued it on vinyl. Taj stayed with Columbia and issued a dozen albums before leaving for Warner Brothers.

This was the second one and it's among his strongest in my opinion. This reissue adds three bonus tracks: an alternate version of "The Cuckoo" (guess which is better?) and "New Stranger Blues" and "Things Are Gonna Work Out Fine."

The album grooves in an upbeat country/blues mood until a Memphis stew version of William Bell's "You Don't Miss Your Water ('Til Your Well Runs Dry)" where Taj digs into Otis Redding and an anonymous brass and reed section adds the Stax/Volt juice. The original ends with a smoking "Gimme Some Lovin'"-like version of the oft covered "A Lot of Love."

In addition to Taj on harp and National Steel guitar the excellent backing band includes Jesse Ed Davis on guitar and pian, Gary Gilmore on bass and Chuck Blackwell on drums. Al Kooper is on piano and Earl Palmer plays drums on unspecified tracks but I'd say Palmer plays on "A Lot of Love."

This reissue tacks on the two bonus tracks to flesh out what was a relatively short but pleasingly compact and self contained album. The bonus tracks sound like demo/jams. They're superfluous but don't hurt and if you don't like them you can always lift the stylus after "A Lot of Love."

The upbeat performances are crisp and infectious, the backing band rocks and the recording quality is high. Producer David Rubinson rarely disappointed during this era.

The original 1A pressing I have here is somewhat cleaner and more immediate sounding, but the vinyl is noisier.

The cover art changed at some point in this release's history. The original has the artwork in a white border signed by the artist with 1/25 between the work's title (Taj) and the artist's name. There was probably some permission and/or licensing issue.

This is a fine reissue of a worthy album, though you might easily find a clean original on line or at your favorite used LP emporium

Texas-bred singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Doug Sahm was one of the most important musicians ever to emerge from the Lone Star state, and an inspiration to multiple generations of roots-conscious rock ’n’ rollers. Sahm did much of his most beloved work as leader of the seminal Sir Douglas Quintet, the audaciously eclectic band that first burst onto the national scene in 1965. With trusty sidekick Augie Meyers providing distinctive support on the Vox organ, the Quintet delivered an infectious, eclectic mix that encompassed Tex-Mex border pop, raw garage-rock, hipster honky-tonk, horn-driven R&B and more.

The Sir Douglas Quintet’s most productive and influential period was its late-’60s/early-’70s stint with Mercury Records and its sister labels Smash and Philips. That period saw the SDQ relocate from Texas to San Francisco and record some of their most enduring and adventurous music. And that music never sounded better than on the mono mixes that graced the singles that the band released during that period, which are collected on this deluxe set.

The Mono Singles’ 22 songs include the band’s 1969 signature smash “Mendocino,” along with such Sahm standards as “At the Crossroads,” “Dynamite Woman,” “Nuevo Laredo,” “Texas Me,” “And It Didn’t Even Bring Me Down,” “Michoacan” and his heartfelt rendition of Freddy Fender’s “Wasted Days, Wasted Nights,” plus a selection of rare non-album B-sides. The collection also features Sahm’s historic Nashville recording “Be Real,” which he released under the pseudonym “Wayne Douglas” in an attempt to break into the conservative mainstream country market.

These days, Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs are best remembered for such infectious ’60s hits as “Wooly Bully” and “Lil’ Red Riding Hood,” and for the sartorial splendor of turbaned frontman/organist Sam the Sham (née Domingo Samudio) and his bandmates. In 1968, the Otis Redding single “(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay” went gold in the U.S. three months after the singer was killed in a plane crash.

Winners at the 1970 Grammy Awards included Joe South for Song of the Year with “Games People Play.” Crosby Stills & Nash won Best New Artist, and The 5th Dimension got Record of the Year with “Aquarius’”/ “Let The Sun Shine In.”

In 1971, Jim Morrison arrived in Paris, booking into the Hotel George V. The following week he moved into an apartment at 17 Rue Beautreillis where he lived in until his death on 3 July.

In 1972, Harry Nilsson was at #1 on the U.K. singles chart with his version of the Pete Ham-Tom Evans composition, “Without You.” First recorded by Badfinger in 1970, the song was also a #1 for Mariah Carey in 1994.



In 1978, Meat Loaf's "Bat Out Of Hell" album began a 416 week run on the UK chart and would go on to sell over 2 million copies.

Janet Jackson signed a deal with Virgin Records in 1991 for 2 albums worth $50 million.

In 1993, Eric Clapton hit number 1 in the US with his "Unplugged" album that had been in the Top Ten for six months. The additional attention created by his six Grammys at the annual awards ceremony pushed sales of his live album even higher. "Unplugged" beat out "Achtung Baby", "The Beauty and The Beast" soundtrack and albums by Annie Lennox and kd lang for album of the year.

In 1996, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr turned down a $225 million offer to do a reunion tour. Good, it wouldn't have been the same....

In 2000, KISS began their "Farewell Tour."  They are still at it!

In 2004, Edmund Sylvers, the lead singer of the Sylvers on their 1975, number one hit, "Boogie Fever", died after a ten month battle with cancer. He was just 47 years old.

The Third Man Rolling Record Store

The Third Man Rolling Record Store, Jack White's latest wild invention, is set to make it's debut at SXSW this year. Third Man quotes a study saying that "97% of all high school aged kids have never been to a stand alone record store," and White plans on changing that by bringing one to them.

The truck plans to travel the nation, playing vinyl from a built in PA while people shop, but first it's going to be parked around Austin for the music portion of SXSW, March 16th - 20th. A release on Third Man Records states, "We're going to do it in style with musical performances, guest DJs, exclusive records and merchandise (including 4 different tri-colors), giveaways and plenty of surprises."

The mobile truck (that is an oxymoron for those paying atttention) trucks features:

* Full menu of Third Man merchandise including 45s and LPs, obviously.

Green Day To Release Version Vinyl Of "Awesome As F*ck"

Green Day will be releasing a vinyl version of upcoming album "Awesome As F*ck".

The vinyl is scheduled to be released on Billie Joe Armstrong's own label, Adeline Records. The 17 track vinyl will be on pink 180 gram double-disc gatefold vinyl, and comes bundled with an exclusive t-shirt.

The CD/digital version is due out March 15, 2011, while the Adeline Records vinyl release is expected on April 26, 2011.

Vinyl Gets its Groove Back

In a world where advancing technology is the indication of progress in the arts - books and magazines are being replaced by e-readers and iPads and telephones that aren't "smart" have become historical artifacts - where does nostalgia fit in? Apparently, it's found a nice home in the music industry, where record sales-- of actual vinyl LPs and EPs-- have been experiencing a renaissance.

About 2.8 million vinyl LPs were sold last year, according Nielsen Soundscan statistics, the most since the company started collecting the point-of-purchase data in 1991. That same figure marked a 14 percent increase over 2009.

"One of the main factors of the resurgence is the availability of records," said Eric Levin, owner of Criminal Records in Atlanta. "During the 90s and most of the aughts, the majority of stuff wasn't available in the format, so now that we're feeding the machine, we're seeing great sales increases."

Bruce Channel's "Hey Baby" sat at the top of the Pop chart in America in 1962.

In 1964, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel recorded "The Sounds Of Silence" as an acoustic duo. It wasn't until record company producers added electric guitar, bass and drums, without the knowledge of Paul and Art, that the song would become a hit in late 1965.

In 1973, Pink Floyd's epic "Dark Side Of The Moon" was released in America, where it would spent over 740 weeks on the chart.

In 1979, Gloria Gaynor started a three-week run at # 1 on the U.S. singles chart with “I Will Survive,” also a chart-topper in the U.K. The song was originally released as the B-side to a song first recorded by The Righteous Brothers called “Substitute.”

1987 - 30 year-old Andy Gibb, younger brother of Bee Gees Robin, Maurice and Barry, died from a viral infection in his heart. Andy hadn't had a chart hit since 1981, but did have a stint as host of the Solid Gold TV show. Shortly before his death and just after he declared bankruptcy, Andy had signed a record deal and was working on a new album for Island Records that was never completed.

1997 - R&B singer LaVern Baker, who placed 7 songs in the US Top 40 in the mid-1950s and early 1960s, including "Tweedlee Dee" and "I Cried A Tear", died of heart failure at the age of 67.



In 2000, 2000 - Chrissie Hynde (Pretenders) and two other people were arrested in New York City after slashing leather goods at Gap store as part of a protest organized by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Aw, have a hamburger and shut up.......

2005 - 53-year-old Danny Joe Brown, the original lead singer of Molly Hatchet, died from renal failure due to complications from diabetes. Brown was the front man for the band's self-titled album in 1978, which went Platinum. In 1979, the next album, "Flirtin' With Disaster" sold over 2 million copies.

In 2008, Pop diva Madonna, rocker John Mellencamp, singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen, British Invasion pioneers The Dave Clark Five and instrumental Rock legends The Ventures were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during a ceremony at New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.

and in 2010, Pink Floyd won a court battle with EMI that prevents the record company from selling single downloads and ringtones on the Internet from the group's albums. Pink Floyd's back catalogue is second in sales to only the Beatles.

DEAR JERRY: Halleluiah! In January, you answered all but one of my eternal questions about “Frim Fram Sauce.”

The one you did not answer is whether or not frim fram, ossenfay, and chifafa really exist.

Even the Indiana lady who sent the question (Donna Dorfman) asked this, but you seemed to side-step that topic. Do you know?

Also, are ossenfay and chifafa really spelled that way?

DEAR FRANK: Had I received more than just one letter (yours) asking why I didn't answer this question, I would suspect the wording of my reply failed to do its job.

Nevertheless, on the chance someone else out there, who didn't write, also misunderstood the implication, here is Frim Fram, Take 2.

Right there in my first paragraph is the answer you seek, which states:

“Unfortunately, not a one of her preferred choices [frim fram sauce, ossenfay, chifafa] are likely to be found on anyone's menu — unless concocted specifically to tie-in with “The Frim Fram Sauce” [song].”

Simply put, I cannot categorically state there isn't a diner somewhere that, inspired by the song, didn't add these items to their menu. To do so would be nothing more than a gimmick to connect with the amusing lyrics.

When written in 1945, by Redd (Louis) Evans and Joseph Ricardel, none of these items existed, and, apart from the possible exception noted above, they still do not exist.

As for the spelling of ossenfay and chifafa, my source is Diana Krall's wonderful “Frim Fram Sauce” video. In it both words appear several times, first on the diner's menu and then on the customer's check.




DEAR JERRY: As you surely know, the last track on Side One of the Beatles “Let It Be” album is “Maggie Mae.” It's a very cute song, and I have grown quite fond of it over the past 40 years.

Much to my dismay, however, it runs only 39 seconds! Since the Beatles wrote it, I doubt they would have created a :39 second song and then called it a wrap.

I've never seen an official explanation, but it stands to reason that if more of “Maggie Mae” existed it would be on “Let It Be.”

DEAR MARGARET: Or should I call you Maggie?

“Maggie May,” the usual title of this traditional Liverpoolian folk song, has been around longer than any of the Beatles, or any of their parents. Since the early 1800s, according to most sources.

Need I point out this is a completely different “Maggie May” than the one made famous by Rod Stewart in 1971?

Because this Maggie was in the public domain — not owned or claimed by anyone — the Beatles helped themselves to some writing credit, a wise and ultimately profitable ploy.

Most 20th century, pre-Beatles, versions originated in England circa-1957. The best known of these, and the only one issued in America (Capitol 3711), is by the Viper Skiffle Group.

At that time in Liverpool, John Lennon's first band, the Quarrymen, jumped on the skiffle (folk-rock) craze, and “Maggie May” became one of their staples.

As an homage to those formative Quarrymen days, the Beatles did an impromptu :56 of “Maggie Mae” (now their title) during their Jan. 24, 1969 Abbey Road session.

So what happened to the other 17 seconds?

Who knows? Regardless, the full-length “Maggie Mae,” all:56 worth, eventually came out on the bootleg CD “Artifacts 5: Get Back to Abbey Road, 1969-1970.” On it, after “Maggie Mae,” Paul says “take it, Maggie,” then segues right into “Fancy Me Chances,” a 30-second ditty from their early '60s catalog.

For more on John Lennon, the Quarrymen, and their “Maggie Mae” days, I recommend the 2010 film, “Nowhere Boy.” It's entertaining, informative, and, more importantly, factual.

Alice in Chains' Founding Bassist, Mike Starr, Found Dead in Salt Lake City

The founding and former bassist of Alice in Chains -- Mike Starr -- has been found dead in a home in Salt Lake City, according to a report first filed by TMZ.com. Police were called to the house at 1:42PM on Tuesday and found controlled substances including Xanax and the painkiller Opana, along with the dead body.

In 1987, Starr was friends with guitarist Jerry Cantrell. Starr agreed to join Cantrell's new project with vocalist Layne Staley and drummer Sean Kinney under the name Alice in Chains.

Black Stone Cherry Announces New Record


Roadrunner Records is pleased to announce the third Black Stone Cherry Album, Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, is due out May 31st, 2011.

Kentucky’s Black Stone Cherry, comprised of vocalist Chris Robertson, guitarist Ben Wells, bassist Jon Lawhon and Drummer John Fred Young, is a band adept at creating both timeless rock ‘n roll and new, innovative sounds. While the band’s last record, Folklore and Superstition, was a compelling tribute to brotherhood and history, the new album is the summation of a year in the life of the band—every emotion, triumph, loss, romance and everything in between—it’s all here on Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea.

This is the first time Black Stone Cherry has not recorded in the South, this time taking up residence in Los Angeles to work with famed producer Howard Benson (Theory of a Deadman, Daughtry, Three Days Grace). The new surroundings allowed them to strengthen their relationships as both band members and friends, ultimately a detail that sets Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea above previous recordings. The raw intensity that pervades the music on this album harkens back to the early days of Black Stone Cherry, when they were a bunch of blue-collar guys just making music together for the hell of it. The band admits “When we first began writing music, we hadn’t traveled very far out of our home state of Kentucky. Now, ten years later, we’ve traveled the world and experienced things we never imagined we would.”

First single “White Trash Millionaire,” set to hit airwaves in April, pairs Robertson’s soulful delivery with the urgent and infectious rhythms of his fellow players. Sure, this is Southern rock at heart; but the concept is universal: just take what the world gives you and make that work. “This album is the culmination of all of the everyday ups and downs life throws at you,” says the band. “Sonically, you’ll hear some of the meanest sounding guitar riffs we’ve ever laid down, and at the same time, you’ll find ballads that will tug on your heartstrings. It's an interesting time for REM.

Their 15th album, Collapse Into Now, has just been released.

Bassist Mike Mills is happy, but realistic.

"It's impossible to sell albums these days," Mills says.

"It's too bad. I wish all the people who download music for free would do their work for free. Whatever work they do for a living, I wish they'd stop being paid for it. It'd be great, but that's not going to happen.

In 1957, Fats Domino had the number 1 record on the Billboard R&B singles chart with "I'm Walkin'", which had just replaced his own, "Blue Monday". Domino would keep the Top 40 hits coming for the next 5 years before fading to the oldies tours.

In 1961, The Beatles make their first of over 300 appearance at Liverpool's Cavern Club. The group had played the venue in the past as The Quarry Men.

Also in 1961 - The Supremes released their first single, "I Want A Guy."

In 1964, Capitol Records releases a song called "Letter To The Beatles" by The Four Preps. The lyrics describe a boy lamenting the fact that he's lost his girlfriend to The Fab Four. On its first day, the record shot to #85 on the Billboard Hot 100 and it looked like The Preps were going to have another hit on their hands. Unfortunately they had included a few bars from "I Want To Hold Your Hand" without permission and Capitol was forced to withdraw the single to avoid a lawsuit.



The Beach Boys started recording “God Only Knows” (off Pet Sounds) in 1966, which became a U.K. #2 when released as a single with “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.”

In 1970, having recently changed their name from Earth to Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward make their concert debut at The Roundhouse in the North London district of Camden Town.

In 1976, Keith Moon collapsed onstage at the start of a Who concert in the Boston Garden.

In 1985, REO Speedwagon returned to Billboard's top spot with "Can't Fight This Feeling". The song made #16 in the UK. It had been a little over five years since the band's first number one hit, "Keep On Loving You".

U2 released the album "The Joshua Tree" in 1987.

In 1997, Notorious B.I.G. was gunned down and killed as he left a party at the Petersen Automotive Museum, Los Angeles. Born Christopher Wallace, the 24-year-old rapper was pronounced dead on arrival at Cedars Sinai Hospital.

In 2007, Brad Delp, lead singer of Boston, committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning at his home in the New Hampshire town of Atkinson. Boston had a 1976 U.S. #5 single with “More Than a Feeling” and the U.S. #1 single, “Amanda,” 10 years later.

Three New Hendrix Archive Releases Coming From Experience Hendrix & Legacy

Experience Hendrix LLC and Legacy Recordings have announced the third wave of releases in their Jimi Hendrix Catalog project. All will be available on April 12.

First up is a reissue of Power Of Soul: A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix, a collection of sixteen performances covering artists both classic and modern. It is the first tribute album to be curated under Hendrix LLC and they assembled quite the roster from Santana, Eric Clapton and Sting to archive tracks from John Lee Hooker and Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble. The album was originally released on May 4, 2004.

In this new Between the Grooves series, George de Stefano digs beneath the nondescript cover of Howlin' Wolf's "Rocking Chair" album -- an urtext for many rock and R&B artists who have been inspired by it or covered its songs -- to examine some of the greatest blues ever recorded.

An acoustic guitar and a rocking chair, set against a green background. You could hardly ask for a more nondescript album cover. But that image has become iconic because of the extraordinary music inside the unremarkable packaging. In fact, the album has come to be known by its cover art. Chess Records titled the disk Howlin’ Wolf when the Chicago-based company released it in 1962. But everyone, or at least every serious blues aficionado, knows this collection of 12 tracks by Chester “Howlin’ Wolf” Burnett simply as “the rocking chair album” .

Sparks The Rescue Unveil Cover Art

Fearless Records has released the cover art for 'Worst Thing I've Been Cursed With,' the second album from Sparks The Rescue. The new album is scheduled for release on May 10th.

"We are very excited to release our second full-length Worst Thing I've Been Cursed With," states singer Alex Roy. "We wrote this record over the course of the summer into fall in a cabin in Poland Springs, Maine. I feel this record shows how much we've grown as songwriters, musicians and friends. ALKALINE TRIO Celebrate 15th Anniversary With New Album

In celebration of their 15th year as a band, high energy melodic cult rockers Alkaline Trio have announced they will enter the studio in late February to re-imagine and record a collection of songs from their celebrated catalog for a new album to be released this summer on Epitaph/Heart & Skull.

The threesome will be stripping down fan favorites from their coveted seven studio albums, which include Goddamnit, Maybe I'll Catch Fire, From Here to Infirmary, Good Mourning, Crimson, Agony & Irony and This Addiction, and re-recording the songs under new visions with the accompaniment of a variety of instruments at Hurley Studios in Costa Mesa, California. Additionally, the band will tantalize fans with new tracks as well, making this a must have for both old and new fans alike.

Known for well-crafted hook filled songwriting and poetic tongue-in-cheek lyrics, Alkaline Trio have amassed a diehard cult following around the globe in the last 15 years. Comprised of guitarist/vocalist Matt Skiba, bassist/vocalist Dan Andriano and drummer Derek Grant, the group has composed some of punk rock's most memorable songs with hits like "Nose Over Tail" from their 1998 debut Goddamnit, "Radio" from 2000's Maybe I'll Catch Fire, "Private Eye" from 2001's From here to Infirmary, "We've Had Enough" from 2003's Good Mourning, "Time to Waste" from 2005's Crimson, "Calling All Skeletons" from 2008's Agony & Irony and the title track from 2010's This Addiction among others. Valencia releasing B-sides and Rarities 7-inch

Pop-punkers Valencia will release a 7″ entitled B-Sides and Rarities featuring two never-before-heard songs, “Adrenaline” and “Fight or Flight.” It will be limited to 500 copies, with 50 available March 16th from I Surrender Records. http://www.isurrenderrecords.com/ The remaining available on the band’s upcoming tour.

SPOTLIGHT: Vinyl records still cool for some

WESTMONT, Ill. -- Not long after Hank Shurba went into business selling records in 1983, the Elmhurst man started to hear buzz of a new media form destined to change music forever.

They were called CDs.

"I opened up and that very first week I heard about them,'" Shurba, 66, recalls. "I thought, 'Oh, my God. What do I do now?'"

In 1962, the Beatles (with Pete Best on drums), appeared on television for the first time when they play Roy Orbison's "Dream Baby" on the BBC program Teenager's Turn. It was reportedly the first time they wore suits onstage.

The Dave Clark 5 made their first appearance on the "Ed Sullivan Show" in 1964.



In 1968, Albert King, Janis Joplin and Tim Buckley appear at the reopened Village Theater in New York, now known as the Fillmore East, promoted by Bill Graham.

In 1969, Small Faces split up after four years when singer Steve Marriott announces he is leaving the band. Ronnie Lane, Ian McLagan and Kenny Jones eventually link up with Ron Wood and Rod Stewart to form The Faces.

Paul McCartney pled guilty to charges of growing marijuana outside of his Scottish countryside farm in 1973. He claimed that a fan had given him the seeds and that he did not know what they would grow. He was fined $240.

Also in 1973, Ron "Pigpen" McKernan of The Grateful Dead, died of a stomach hemorrhage and liver failure, brought on by alcohol poisoning. He was just 27 years old.

In 1974, Bad Company, made up of former members from Free (Paul Rodgers, Simon Kirke), Mott The Hoople (Mick Ralphs) and King Crimson (Boz Burrell), kicked off their first UK tour at Newcastle City Hall.

In 1976, former Spooky Tooth singer Gary Wright is awarded a Gold record for "Dream Weaver".

In 1993 - "Beavis and Butthead" premiered on MTV as a series.
