Concerts on Both Coasts to Celebrate the 75th Birthday of Wavy Gravy

Wavy Gravy (real name Hugh Romney) will forever be one of the most remembered faces from the Woodstock Festival and has gone on to be a major peace activist along with a benefactor to the blind with the Seva Foundation and the clown prince of his Camp Winnarainbow.

On May 15, Wavy will turn 75 and, to celebrate, a bunch of friends and admirers are getting together for two concerts in his honor.

Metallica to Unveil New Metallica.com Site on March 28th

On March 28th, Metallica are completely overhauling and relaunching their online presence, Metallica.com. The new version of the website will encompass other Metallica web properties like the fanclub-driven MetClub.com and MetOnTour.com, which will be combined into one big site to ensure easy access to all things Metallica.

Jethro Tull to Perform 'Aqualung' Album in Its Entirety on Summer Tour

In the eyes of metal fans, Jethro Tull may never live down beating Metallica's '...And Justice For All' for the Best Metal/Hard Rock Performance Grammy in 1989 with 'Crest of a Knave.' Twenty-one-year-old Grammy drama aside, the Tull will celebrate the 40th anniversary of their essential 'Aqualung' album by performing it in its entirety on their upcoming summer tour. The band will also play other classics from its 30-album catalog to round out each night's set.

The touring line-up features longtime members Ian Anderson (flute, vocals, acoustic guitar) and Martin Barre (guitars), Doane Perry (drums), as well as David Goodier (bass) and pianist John O'Hara. Goodier and O'Hara joined in 2006 after working with Anderson on some of his solo projects.

Folk veterans to play Good Folk

You can call David Buskin and Robin Batteau media-friendly types -- both old media and new. Early in their careers they signed with major record companies that released their music on vinyl albums. You remember those, the 33-rpm type that warped easily and required turntables and needles. And they're responsible for writing Clio Award-winning jingles like Batteau's "Heartbeat of America" for Chevrolet and Buskin's "We're NBC, Just Watch Us Now" in the '80s.

These days, Buskin & Batteau, as they're known in contemporary folk circles, stream some of their performances live on the internet. They also host a radio show on WPKN that's streamed on the Web.

"Some people said mp3s would cause the end of records, but they didn't." - Aaron Keele After 25 years in the record business, Leslieville resident Aaron Keele knows his way around vinyl.

Growing up in the hip-hop era with a father who ran the venerable record shop Don's Discs, he fell in love with the musical medium and has parlayed that passion into a career.

Keele and longtime friend Akim Boldireff are known as the Record Guys (www.therecordguys.com) and have carved out a niche as two of the country's leading experts on vinyl records and music ephemera.

In 1945, Billboard Magazine published their first album chart with Nat King Cole's "A Collection of Favorites" named as #1.

In 1958, Elvis Presley reported to the Memphis draft board. From there he and 12 other recruits were taken by bus to Kennedy Veterans Memorial Hospital where the singer was assigned army serial number 53310761.

In 1963, the Beatles were the opening act for American Pop stars Chris Montez and Tommy Roe in the quartet's hometown of Liverpool, England.

Bill Wyman was knocked unconscious by an electrical shock from a microphone stand in 1965. It was the first date of the Rolling Stones anniversary tour.

In 1966, the New York State Assembly passed a bill making it a misdemeanor to sell unauthorized copies of records or tapes, commonly known as bootlegs.

Iron Maiden released the album 'The Number of the Beast' in 1980

In 1991, the Black Crowes were dropped as the opening act on ZZ Top's tour for repeatedly criticizing Miller Beer. Miller Beer was sponsoring the tour.

In 1997, 57 year old Harold Melvin, leader of the Philadelphia Soul group Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, died of heart related problems. The group is remembered for their 1972, US #3 hit, "If You Don't Know Me By Now".

In 2005, Rod Price, a founding member of Foghat, died after falling down a stairway at his home. The 57 year old guitarist was with the band for three Platinum and eight Gold records, including their highest charting US single "Slow Ride" in 1976.

and in 2010, Johnny Maestro, the lead singer for The Crests on their seven US Top 40 records, including the 1959, #2 hit "Sixteen Candles" as well as The Brooklyn Bridge on "The Worst That Could Happen" in 1969, died of cancer at the age of 70.

birthdays today include Shannon Corr (1970) and Nick Lowe (1949), among others.

DEAR JERRY: If you can ease my brain pain, I will forever be grateful.

Circa-1961, the Top 40 stations in this area played a song that is probably titled “Ronnie,” or some slight variation, such as “Oh Ronnie,” or “Ronnie Came Back,” etc.

Every 1960s music expert I've asked immediately says it's “Ronnie,” by Marcy Joe, which was in fact a big hit at approximately the same time.

So I'll save you the trouble by saying that “Ronnie” is a different song altogether.

Either my mystery song is by Connie Stevens, or someone who sounds exactly like she did around that time.

DEAR RAYMOND: The pain in your brain is about to wane.

Like the others, my first thought was Marcy Joe's “Ronnie,” especially since she repeatedly pleads “Ronnie, come back.” Having found a new girlfriend, he, like Charlie on the M.T.A., never returns.

However, you say this Ronnie came back. This, combined with the other clues, points directly to “The Ballad of Ronnie,” by Alicia Adams. In her ballad, Ronnie leaves Alicia for a hitch in the military, but eventually does come back to her.

On the reverse is “Kissin' On,” a strangely-titled up-tempo side. This too got some air play and might be another track you will remember.

Released in October 1960, Alicia's debut single (Capitol 4444) earned four-star reviews from the trade magazines. Even so, it did not chart nationally.

Thinking the singer of this teener tune to be Connie Stevens is very understandable. Other than Connie and Alicia, most anyone could make that same mistake.


DEAR JERRY: Having now watched the first episode of the fifth season of Army Wives, it brings to mind a question about the name of one of the regular characters, Emmaline Holden, daughter of Michael and Claudia Joy Holden.

Though I never heard this name before Army Wives, I was flabbergasted to find nearly 4,000 Emmalines on Facebook. This includes women of all ages.

My grandmother mentioned a song titled “Emmaline” was popular during the big band years, and it may have inspired some parents to name their girls Emmaline.

DEAR NANCY: Yes, even though there are slight title variations and other considerations.

Emmalin (no 'e') Holden, played in Army Wives Season One (2007) by Caroline Pires, and thereafter by Katelyn Pippy, is not nearly as common a name as Emmaline.

As you now know, Facebook hosts thousands of Emmalines, yet they do not list even one Emmalin.

Next we have “Emaline,” almost certain to be the big band tune granny recalls.

Recorded in 1937 by Mildred Bailey, the preeminent female singer of the swing era, her “Emaline” is the man she hopes to marry. This would likely lessen the number of swing era parents naming girls Emaline.

Accompanying Bailey on the “Emaline” session is Benny Goodman's Orchestra, and some stellar sax work from Coleman Hawkins.

Using Facebook again as our sampler of society, they do have one Emaline, and wouldn't you know she is a she.

Seemingly against the odds, 10 years after “Emaline,” Mildred recorded a completely different song titled “Evaline,” with only one different letter.

As with Emalin, this Evaline is another potential mate of the male variety.

Facebook has two Evalines, both of whom are females. Why am I not surprised?


IZ ZAT SO? In 1925, while performing in Los Angeles, Mildred (neé: Rinker) Bailey was asked by her brother, Al Rinker, if she could help he and his crooning partner break into show business.

Mildred obliged and landed a job for Al and his pal, Harry Crosby, a gifted 22-year-old singer who preferred to be called “Bing.”

Throughout his remarkable career, Bing Crosby often credited Mildred Bailey for helping him secure his first important job in the entertainment business.

DEF LEPPARD Singer's DOWN 'N' OUTZ Planning To Release Album Of Original Material

This summer, DEF LEPPARD will release a new album and tour with HEART but before then, singer Joe Elliott will be touring the U.K. with his other group, DOWN 'N' OUTZ, a project also featuring members of THE QUIREBOYS. Last July, the guys released their debut album, "My ReGeneration", featuring covers of songs by MOTT THE HOOPLE, Ian Hunter and BRITISH LIONS, the music DOWN N' OUTZ performed as the support act for MOTT THE HOOPLE at one of the legendary band's 2009 reunion shows. Fans who bought the disc might have noticed that this CD is marked "Volume 1." That implies there is more to come and Joe told VH1 Radio Networks' Dave Basner what to expect from the band in the future.

In 1955, Elvis Presley auditioned for TV's Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts, where he plays "Good Rockin' Tonight". His performance was weak and the show's producers turned him down.

In 1959, The Skyliners, a five member group from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, entered the Billboard Pop chart for the first time with the now classic doo-wop hit, "Since I Don't Have You". The song will be their biggest success, reaching #12. Joe Rock would later say that he was upset about a girl who had just left him and wrote most of the lyrics while sitting in his car between stoplights.

Elvis Presley recorded the immortal cut "Can't Help Falling in Love" in 1961.

The film of The Concert for Bangladesh featuring George Harrison, Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton premiered in New York in 1972.

In 1973, John Lennon was ordered to leave the U.S. within 60 days by immigration authorities. Lennon appealed and after a long fight to obtain his Green Card, the ex-Beatle was given permanent resident status on July 27, 1976.

In 1977, Elvis Presley appeared at the Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona – the first show of a 49-date U.S. tour lasting over three months and Presley’s last-ever tour.

In 1985, John Lennon's son Julian gave his first concert in San Antonio, Texas. Over the next two years he would place four songs on the Hot 100, including "Valotte" (#9) and "Too Late For Goodbyes" (#5).

In 1999 - In Gibraltar, a set of postage stamps was released commemorating what would have been the 30th wedding anniversary of Yoko Ono and John Lennon.

In 2008, Neil Aspinall, who oversaw The Beatles’ Apple Corps business empire from 1968-2007, died from lung cancer at age 66 at a hospital in New York. A Liverpool school friend of Paul McCartney and George Harrison, he was regarded by many as “the fifth Beatle,” becoming the group’s road manager in 1961 before becoming their personal assistant. In the ’80s Aspinall became the head of The Beatles’ Apple company. Aspinall had also played background instruments on certain Beatles tracks, including “Magical Mystery Tour,” “Within You, Without You” and “Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite.”

David Crosby and Graham Nash Launch New Label Blue Castle Records

With First-Ever Digital and Vinyl Releases of Their Renowned 1971 Live Set 'Another Stoney Evening' on March 22

DUO KICK OFF COAST-TO-COAST CROSBY/NASH TOUR ON MARCH 25

Singer-songwriters David Crosby and Graham Nash have been harmonizing ever since Crosby, Stills & Nash formed in 1968. In addition to making music with CSN and CSN&Y, an ongoing element of their collaboration is recording and performing as a duo. That two-man configuration is celebrated this spring with both a nationwide tour kicking off March 25, and the launch of Crosby and Nash's new independent label - Blue Castle Records, distributed by ADA and ADA Global - with digital and vinyl versions of Another Stoney Evening as inaugural releases on March 22.

Another Stoney Evening was recorded on October 10, 1971 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles during one of Crosby and Nash's first in-concert performances as "two together." Previously released only on CD (in 1998), Another Stoney Evening captures an intimate performance spotlighting the duo's stellar harmonies, acoustic guitar and piano accompaniment, and between-song banter. Song highlights include "Deja Vu," "Wooden Ships," "Southbound Train," "Immigration Man," "Guinevere," and "Teach Your Children." Distribution for Blue Castle is through Alternative Distribution Alliance (ADA) in the U.S. and Canada, and Alternative Distribution Alliance Global worldwide.

Monster Music proprietor Galen Hudson remembers his first experience with vinyl. "Steve Miller's Fly Like an Eagle came out when I was nine years old," he says. "I had my mom buy me the record, and there were a lot of other good songs on it, and after that I would just go to the record store and learn.

"And soon I became really into Traffic and Steve Winwood and I was hooked," he says, looking up at an image of Winwood, hanging on the wall of his poster-plastered office.

Ever since those experiences, Hudson has been a self-proclaimed record nerd. Now he has organized the local vinyl jamboree of the year, this Saturday's Charleston Record Expo, which will bring together collectors, sellers, and buyers to meet, browse, and share the vinyl experience.

Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Rolling Stones Announce Record Store Day Releases

– Nirvana – Hormoaning EP: Only available during the bands 1992 Australian tour, the EP features two originals (“Aneurysm” and “Even In His Youth”) plus covers recorded during a 1990 BBC Peel Session. The covers include Devo’s “Turnaround,” The Wipers’ “D-7,” and The Vaselines’ “Son of A Gun” and “Molly’s Lips.” This rare six-track collection is limited to 6,000 copies.

– Sonic Youth – Whores Moaning EP: Yes, it’s a play on the title of the Nirvana EP. Yes, it was released during Sonic Youth’s own Australian tour in 1993. Yes, the cover artwork is a photocopy of Kurt Cobain’s doll and the back artwork is a Cobain original drawing. Yes, the tracks include a radio edit of “Sugar Kane,” instrumentals of tracks “The End of The End of The Ugly” and “Tamra,” and covers of the New York Dolls’ “Personality Crisis” and Alice Cooper’s “Is It My Body.” Yes, it’s pretty sweet.

– The Rolling Stones – “Brown Sugar”/“Bitch”/“Let It Rock”: To celebrate the release of their The Complete Singles (1971-2006) box-set three days after RSD, the Stones will release 5,000, individually numbered U.S. copies this 7” vinyl which replicates the original single. The first two tracks hail from Sticky Fingers, while “Let It Rock” is an ultra-rare cover of the great Chuck Berry.

– Derek and The Dominos – “Got To Get Better In A Little While”/“Layla”: Eric Clapton only got one record out with Derek and The Dominos: 1970’s Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, but it’s mark on music is ever evident. “Layla” comes from that classic record, while “Got To Get Better In A Little While” comes from a newly discovered recording session for a never-materialized followup album. The vocals were recently finished by Derek and The Dominos member Bobby Whitlock, and this 7” vinyl is limited to 2,500 in the U.S.

Death Cab for Cutie Unveil Tour Dates

Seattle indie vets Death Cab for Cutie are dropping their seventh studio album, Codes and Keys, on May 31, so fans will have tons of opportunities to catch 'em live, right? Wrong. And that's what makes their limited 13-date tour, unveiled exclusively on SPIN.com, that much more special.

"I would love to find myself making a record a year from now rather than moving into our seventh straight month of touring," explains singer-guitarist Ben Gibbard. "I'd like to capitalize on feeling inspired to write rather than hobbling up onstage and jumping around for two hours..."

The short outing, dubbed the Underplay Tour, kicks off May 18 in Toronto and hits Chicago, New York City, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles before closing in San Francisco on June 9.

In 1955, 23 year-old Johnny Cash lays down his first tracks at Sam Phillips' Memphis Recording Studio. With Luther Perkins on bass and Marshall Grant on guitar, Johnny sang five Country / Gospel numbers, of which "Mr. Porter" was the only useable cut. Phillips tells Johnny to come back when he's written a hit.

In 1963, "Our Day Will Come" by Ruby and The Romantics topped the Billboard Hot 100. On the day the song was recorded, it was the first time Ruby had ever been in a recording studio.

The Beatles' first album, "Please Please Me," was released in the U.K in 1963.

Bob Dylan's first electric album "Bring it All Back Home" was released in 1965.

In 1969, entertainers Jackie Gleason, Kate Smith, The Lettermen and Anita Bryant appear in Miami, Florida at what is billed as the Rally for Decency. Posters for the event warn that "longhairs and weird dressers" won't be allowed inside. Four days later, President Richard Nixon sends a letter of appreciation to the organizers of the rally.

In 1971, police arrested all the members of The Allman Brothers Band for heroin and marijuana possession.

In 1980, Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)’ started a four-week run at #1 on the U.S. singles chart.

In 1986, Mark Dinning, who scored a US number one hit in 1960 with "Teen Angel", died following a heart attack at the age of 52. The song had been written by his sister, Jeannie. Although he never had another hit, Mark continued performing throughout the 1960s, but felt his lack of success was because, "groups were in and singles were out", once the British Invasion started. He died just after returning home from a club appearance in Jefferson City, Missouri.



In 1991, Dave Guard, a founding member of The Kingston Trio, died of cancer at the age of 56. The group had 17 chart singles and nine Gold albums between 1958 and 1963. Guard left the group in 1961 to form the Whiskey Hill Singers.

In 2004, Ozzy Osbourne topped a Yahoo poll as the UK's favorite ambassador to welcome aliens to Earth. nice....

the late Keith Relf (Yardbirds) was born today in 1943. On May 14, 1976, Relf died from a freak accident, when he accidentally electrocuted himself in his basement while playing guitar.

King of Limbs by Radiohead to Be Released On Vinyl

Radiohead, formed in 1985, has seen worldwide success since their debut studio album, "Pablo Honey," released in 1993 and their single "Creep" exploded across the airwaves. In 2005, they were even ranked at number 73 on the list of "The Greatest Artists of All Time" in Rolling Stone Magazine.

The online release of "The King of Limbs" on February 19 was given four stars by Rolling Stone and an eight out of ten by Spin Magazine. SoundStage Direct will be selling the 12-inch vinyl album when it becomes available on March 28th, and is currently reserving pre-orders. The CD will also hit stores the same day.

Radiohead will also be releasing a "newspaper" edition on May 9th. This edition will include both the CDs and two clear 10" vinyl records in a purpose-built record sleeve. It will include large sheets of artwork, 625 tiny pieces of artwork, and a full-color piece of oxo-degradable plastic to hold it all together. The "newspaper" edition will also be released with a digital download of the album.

The new album, "The King of Limbs", is the first album since the band independently released "In Rainbows" in 2007. It was first released digitally and fans were able to set their own price for the download. When it was later released in physical form, it was praised by critics and topped the charts at Billboard and held a position there for 28 weeks.

The artwork on the album was designed by Stanley Donwood, and pays homage to Northern European fairy tales and their theme of symbiotic relationships with forests and woods. "It's very much about natural forms. I'd heard something about the northern European imagination, in the sense of all our fairy stories and mythical creatures, they all come from the woods," said Donwood. "Me and Thom (Yorke) were working on these ideas of strange, multi-limbed creatures that are neither malevolent or benevolent, they're simply there, part of the living spirit of the forest. That's come through into all of the work."

The name "The King of Limbs" is in reference to a 1,000 year-old oak tree in Wiltshire's Savernake Forest, three miles from Tottenham House where segments of 'In Rainbows" were recorded. Though the tree is not seen anywhere in regards to the album, it was an inspiration, and the phrase also appears in the 23rd chapter of the Qu'ran.

On February 18th, Radiohead released the track "Lotus Flower" and a music video for the song on their blog, and fans quickly began buzzing about the new eight track album. Los Angeles Times music blogger, Ann Powers said that it "can be heard from several different angles", and "Fans and critics have already been registering wildly divergent reactions: Some think it's one of the band's best efforts; others find it too low-key or similar to previous work; a few consider it awfully gloomy, and a few others wish it were less abstract." Nevertheless, Radiohead is a band that has always drawn in their fans and at SoundStage Direct, they expect no different.

Record Store Day Newswire: Limited Edition 7″ from the dB’s

The dB’s are releasing a limited edition 45rpm single of “Picture Sleeve” b/w “Write Back” on Record Store Day. The former is a co-written by Chris Stamey and Peter Holsapple, and the flip is Will Rigby’s first song with The dB’s. They’re from the forthcoming album—their first with the original four guys in thirty years.

The db’s will be performing on Record Store Day at Criminal Records in Atlanta, with Fan Modine.

THE world’s oldest record shop teamed up with a local music lover to hold a special silent event yesterday.

Spillers Records and Steve Shepherd teamed up to hold the first Real Record event in the city centre.

The event invited vinyl fans to the O’Neills pub, on Trinity Street, to listen to Captain Beefheart’s 1970 album Lick My Decals Off, Baby! and Frank Zappa’s 1969 album Hot Rats.

Mobile phones were switched off and conversation not allowed during the music.

"God Bless America" was recorded by Kate Smith in 1939.

In 1952, the Cleveland Arena was the site of what will become recognized as the world's first major Rock 'n' Roll concert. With over 10,000 people inside and another 20,000 waiting outside, Alan Freed was set to broadcast the event 'live' over WJW radio. Paul Williams and His Hucklebuckers were playing their first song when city officials decided to shut the proceedings down, citing fire code violations. Doors and windows were smashed, a few fights broke out, but no one asked for their $1.75 admission back.

In 1964, the Beatles replaced one Billboard chart topper with another when "She Loves You" took over from "I Want To Hold Your Hand".

In 1973, the BBC banned all teenybopper acts from appearing in person on Top of the Pops after a riot following a David Cassidy performance.

In 1976, David Bowie, Iggy Pop and several others are arrested in New York and charged with possession of marijuana. there's a surprise....

In 1981, Although they had been making records for ten years, REO Speedwagon enjoyed their first taste of success when "Keep On Loving You" became the top tune in the US. The band would go on to place twelve more songs in the Top 40.

In 1984, Yoko Ono opens Strawberry Fields, an area in New York's Central Park dedicated to the memory of her late husband, John Lennon.

In 1987, 35 year-old Dean Martin Jr. of Dino, Desi and Billy, died when his F-4 Phantom fighter-jet crashed into California's San Bernardino Mountains during a snowstorm about 100 kilometers east of Los Angeles. Dino was serving in the Air National Guard at the time. He was married and divorced from ice skater Dorothy Hamill and actress Olivia Hussey.

Madonna's album "Like A Prayer" was released in 1989.

Leo Fender, the inventor of the Telecaster and Stratocaster guitars, died from Parkinson’s disease in 1991. He started mass producing solid body electric guitars in the late 1940s and when he sold his guitar company in 1965, sales were in excess of $40 million a year.

In 2002, John "Speedy" Keene, vocalist and drummer for Thunderclap Newman died at the age of 56. The band's biggest hit came in 1969 with "Something In The Air".



In 2006, three South African women won a six-year court battle giving them 25% of all past and future royalties from the song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” composed in 1939 by their father, Solomon Linda. A cleaner at a Johannesburg record company when he wrote it, Linda received virtually nothing for his work and died in 1962 with just $25 in his bank account. It is estimated that the song, recorded by Pete Seeger, The Karl Denver Trio (as “Wimoweh”), The Kingston Trio, The Tokens and R.E.M., had earned $15 million from its use in Disney’s The Lion King alone.

Think Fast! To Release Sick Of It All Vinyl

New York hardcore veterans Sick Of It All have announced that they will release their latest album 'Based On A True Story' on vinyl via Think Fast! Records. The band's ninth album was released last year as the follow-up to 2006's 'Death To Tyrants.' 'Based On A True Story' was recorded and produced by Tue Madsen, who has also worked with Suicide Silence, Aborted, The Haunted and August Burns Red.

The LP edition of the album will be released under exclusive licence of Century Media Records on June 14.

Hallowed Butchery Reveals Cover Art For Split With The Austrasian Goat

Hallowed Butchery have posted the cover artwork for their upcoming split with The Austrasian Goat. Hallowed Butchery commented on the split and their upcoming full-length album:

"A Choir of Dead Children Sing Their Hymn for a Sleeping God: This is the tentative title for the forthcoming full-length album. The concept has changed. The entire album will deal with child abuse, neglect, and murder. All proceeds will be donated to a charity for abused children. More details and a confirmed charity organization will available soon. A release date can be expected late 2011/early 2012.

"The split 10" with the Austrasian Goat should be available soon. There were some delays with mastering, and the girl who was supposed to do the artwork has disappeared. I will be taking over artwork duties. Screenprinted, metallic paper is in the works!!!

Record Label Hero Bob Marcucci Dies

Legendary record company owner and talent manager Robert Marcucci died of respiratory complications and severe infections on March 9 at an Ontario, California, hospital, according to The New York Times. He was 81. Credited with molding the careers of teen idols Fabian and Frankie Avalon, Marcucci’s life inspired the 1980 movie The Idolmaker.

In 1960, Elvis Presley entered a Nashville recording studio for the first time since being discharged from the US Army. A twelve hour session will produce his next single, "Stuck On You", which will top the Billboard chart a month later. Scotty Moore and Bill Black, who had quit Presley's touring band in 1957, are in the studio with him for the last time.

Ricky Nelson recorded "Hello Mary Lou" in 1961, which would climb to number 9 in the US by early May.

The top tune in the US in 1961 was Elvis Presley's "Surrender", which used updated lyrics put to a melody that was written in 1911 as "Come Back To Sorrento". The song would also reach #1 in the UK.

Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Richie Furay and Jim Mesina were arrested at Stephen Stills' house in Los Angeles in 1968 for "being at a place where it is suspected marijuana is being used." It's a misdemeanor for which Clapton will be found innocent while the others paid small fines. Duh, it was the 60's!

In 1969, John Lennon and Yoko Ono were married at the British Consulate Office in Gibraltar. They spent their honeymoon in Amsterdam, campaigning for peace via a week-long “bed-in”. Lennon detailed this period in The Beatles’ single, “The Ballad of John and Yoko,” which was recorded by just Lennon and Paul McCartney on April 14, 1969.



In 1972, Ringo Starr recorded the inane cut "Back Off, Boogaloo", which will become the second of his seven US Top 10 singles. The session was produced by George Harrison.

In 1977, T-Rex played their final gig when they appeared at The Locarno in Portsmouth, England.

Joan Jett And The Blackhearts started a seven week run at #1 on the US singles chart in 1982 with "I Love Rock 'n' Roll".

In 1989, Dick Clark announces his retirement from American Bandstand. On April 8th, comedian David Hirsch would take over, but the show was never the same and came to an end on October 7th. It continued to tape live at the Harrah's Club and Casino in Reno, Nevada, and aired locally until the mid-1990s

Sadly, in 1991, Eric Clapton's four year old son, Conor, fell to his death from the 53rd story of a New York City apartment window. The boy was in the custody of his mother, Italian actress, Lori Del Santo and the pair were visiting a friend's apartment. The housekeeper had just cleaned a room and opened the window to air it out. Eric was staying in a nearby hotel after taking his son to the circus the previous evening. The tragedy inspired his song "Tears in Heaven".

Mobile Fidelity Silver Series Off to Auspicious Beginning

The music made by the Australian group Dead Can Dance during their seventeen year existence resembled soundtracks to imaginary movies. The core duo of Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard, who were also an item at the time, moved to the U.K. a year after the group's founding in 1981. They issued their first album on 4AD in 1984.

From the beginning the group trafficked in ambient soundscapes and ethno-techno drumming leavened with the ubiquitous synthesizers then driving the era's pop music scene. The debut (4AD CAD 404) sounds something like The Thompson Twins meets Joy Division, meets Hieronymous Bosch meets My Bloody Valentine meets "world music" probably before the term was coined—but with far more depth of soulful expression. Both Perry and Gerrard's vocal chops expanded exponentially over time compared to how they sounded on the debut. Gerrard sounds a bit like Edith Piaf there. Not on this record!

Over the years the group's musical palette expanded while the ethnic sounds in which they traded gained greater currency in pop music. At the same time, purist practitioners began incorporating more pop.

By the time this complex gem, featuring just the duo of Perry and Gerrard, was first issued in 1993, a large audience was waiting to accept and embrace it and it hit the Billboard Top 200 Chart and went on to sell an amazing half-a million or so copies—and for good reason!

The music is a complex melange of straight forward goth-rock, with plenty of shimmering, chimey guitars, mixed with a jumble of ethnic musical accents ranging from American Indian to Indian Indian to Arabic plus sound effects, heavy and varied percussion occasionally anchored with shuddering bass.

The vibe is heavy. The religious overtones are earthy and dank. Death and mystery hover in the air. There's a dense adaptation of Bertold Brecht's "How Fortunate the Man With None" from "Mother Courage," and one set to Robert Dwyer Joyce's Irish rebellion poem "The Wind That Shakes the Barley," plus originals that cover a wide variety of mysteries and betrayals. There's chanting.

Mr. Perry is not only a talented singer, musician, arranger and composer. He's also a brilliant engineer and producer. This double LP set was recorded in Quivvy Church, Ireland and Perry captures both the instrumental timbres and textures and the spaciousness of the venue with alarming immediacy and dynamic involvement.

If you don't jump out of your seat on occasion as this plays—I don't care how many times you've heard it—something is wrong with your stereo. I've been playing it for seventeen plus years on the original double UK pressed LP set but truthfully haven't listened for awhile as my system has dramatically improved and I had a few adrenaline surges a few times listening to this superb Mobile-Fidelity reissue.

The spaciousness is astonishing, the clarity and precision of the percussive attack intense, the bass, deep, taut and well-textured and the presentation of Perry's and Gerrard's vocals full bodied and three-dimensional. This is as good as recorded music can sound in my opinion and Mobile Fidelity's reissue on RTI standard weight audiophile quality vinyl presents it against the blackest backdrop. I've played my original to death (pun intended) and it still sounds great and quiet, but this reissue presents an even blacker backdrop. It might be better than the original, but given how many plays mine has had, I'm not sure. It's at least as good, that's for sure.

An auspicious start for Mobile Fidelity's new lower cost silver series of LPs. Even if you've never heard this group or this record, if you're going to step out and try something new, this would be the place to do it. Highly, highly recommended for both music and sound. Turn the lights out and you'll be transported to another place.
