9/11 Remembrance: How the Music Industry Was Impacted

Songs were banned, albums rejiggered and tours postponed, but musicians also banded together, writing inspirational songs and raising over $170 million in the weeks after the terrorist attacks.


Like nearly all forms of entertainment, the music industry both felt the impact of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and made its own.

September 11, 2001 was a Tuesday, the day when music stores typically receive new releases, and several big titles were on deck, including Jay-Z’s The Blueprint. The week after the terrorist attacks, music sales dropped 5%, while the New York metropolitan area suffered a 16.2% decline, according to Nielsen SoundScan (worth noting: six weeks earlier, N Sync's Celebrity album sold a staggering 1.8 million units its first week out). But soon thereafter, music would play an important role in the process of grieving and healing and the eventual return to normalcy.

Legendary guitarist and Mountain founder Leslie West will release Unusual Suspects on Monday, September 19. It’s his first album since 2006’s Blue Me.

Unusual Suspects features West alongside some of the world’s finest guitar players including Slash, blues-rock guitar superstar Joe Bonamassa of Black Label Society, ex-Ozzy guitarist and Black Label Society frontman Zakk Wylde, ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons and Toto’s Steve Lukather.

“These guys don’t just show up to play on everybody’s albums,” said West.

Julian Lennon To Release Sixth Album On October 3

Julian Lennon is scheduled to release his first album in 13 years this October 3.    'Everything Changes,' is a 12 effort and his first since 1998's 'Photograph Smile'.  The first single from the album, produced by Lennon and Grant Ransom, is called 'Lookin' 4 Luv' and is out now.

In his 13 years away from the music industry, Lennon, the son of Cynthia and John Lennon, has had his photography work exhibited across the world. He had also worked with U2 in his capacity as a photographer. He has also helmed the eco-charity, the White Feather Foundation. Of recording an album after such a long gap, Lennon said:

I get twitchy if I don't pick up a guitar or sit at the piano every now and then... I have to do it; I don't have a choice.

Think Fast! Records Announce 10th Anniversary Release

It's been exactly 10 years since Think Fast! Records was born. We've come a long way since handcut layouts from Kinko's and have had the honor of working with some of our favorite bands of all time. To tell us 10 years ago that we'd be working with bands like Sick of it All and Ignite, we probably wouldn't have believed you. But here we are. Despite the ever-declining music industry and despite the worst economy our generation has ever seen, we're still here weathering the storm.

To celebrate 10 years, we've compiled our first 10" vinyl record (picture disc), complete with 10 exclusive songs and artwork created by celebrated punk/hardcore artist, Ryan Eyestone. An apocalyptic explosion of pyramids with the hint of heavy metal is just what Nick Keller intended for the album cover of Beastwars.

The design that won Nick Keller the ‘Best Album Cover’ award at the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards.

The former Tauranga Boys’ College student has just won ‘Best Album Cover’ at the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards with an imaginative original design for Wellington based band Beastwars.

This 28-year-old has one creative mind, producing the cover from a brief provided by the heavy metal band.

“I really loved the idea – the band wanted it to show a really apocalyptic event,” says Nick.

“I used a lot of symbolism and played with the scale and different levels of pyramids.”

In 1948, Elvis Presley's family moved to Memphis, TN.

In 1964, Manfred Mann's "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" entered Billboard's Hot 100, where it will reach the number one position just a few weeks later.

Also in 1964, the Supremes, the Shangri-La’s, Marvin Gaye, Dusty Springfield, the Ronettes, Millie Small, the Temptations, the Miracles and Little Anthony and the Imperials all appeared at the Fox Theatre, Brooklyn, New York. WOW, what a show!

In 1966, the Monkees television show premiereed on NBC. Producers Bert Schneider and Bob Rafelson decided to emulate the zany, madcap humor of the Beatles' A Hard Day's Night for the small screen. When they placed in ad in Variety for four Folk and Rock musicians to appear in a TV series, over 400 applied for the job, including Stephen Stills, John Sebastian, Harry Nilsson and Danny Hutton, but as it turned out, only one of the four winners, guitarist and songwriter Michael Nesmith, actually saw the ad. Micky Dolenz (who would play drums), Davy Jones (who would sing), and Peter Tork (bass) found out about the opportunity from other sources. Nesmith and Tork had experience in the Folk scene; Dolenz and Jones were primarily actors, although Nesmith and Jones had already made some obscure solo recordings. Some have claimed that Charles Manson also applied, but the truth is that he was in prison at the time and would not be paroled until March 21, 1967. my bad, on a previous music history post i had claimed he has audititoned. my bad....

"Josie and the Pussycats," the cartoon, debuted on CBS in 1970.

Also in 1970, $40,000 of Pink Floyd's equipment was stolen in New Orleans.

In 1972, Gary Glitter's instrumental, "Rock and Roll Part 2" reached its peak at number seven on the US chart. The song was a standard at sporting events for years until he was arrested on child pornography charges in England in 1997. Many pro sports organizations quit playing the song after a technician fixing Glitter's computer found indecent images of young children on his hard drive.   pig, i hate the song anyway.....

One of the most iconic Pink Floyd LPs of all time 'Wish You Were Here,' was released on this date in 1975

Wish You Were Here is the second Pink Floyd album to use a conceptual theme written entirely by Waters, and echoes his feeling at the time that the camaraderie that had served the band previously, was largely absent. The album begins with an eight minute thirty seconds instrumental preamble, before segueing into the lyrics for "Shine On You Crazy Diamond". "Shine On" is a tribute to former band member Syd Barrett, whose drug-induced breakdown had forced him to leave the band several years before. Barrett is fondly recalled with lines such as "Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun" and "You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon."

The album is also a critique of the music business; "Shine On" fades seamlessly into "Welcome to the Machine", which begins with the opening of a door—described by Waters as a symbol of musical discovery and progress betrayed by a music industry more interested in greed and success. The song ends with sounds from a party, epitomising "the lack of contact and real feelings between people". Similarly, "Have a Cigar" scorns record industry "fatcats", its lyrics containing well-used clichés such as "can hardly count", "they call it riding the gravy train", and "by the way, which one's Pink?"—a question actually asked of the band on at least one occasion. "Wish You Were Here" contains lyrics which relate not only to Barrett's condition, but also to the dichotomy of Waters' character, as an idealist, and a domineering personality. The album closes with a reprise of "Shine On", and further instrumental excursions.

In 1980, an in-depth report on the death of Elvis Presley aired on ABC-TV’s "20/20". It raised so many unanswered questions that the official case concerning Elvis’ death was reopened.

In 1986, John McGeoch of Public Images Ltd was hit with a two-litre wine bottle while performing in Vienna, Austria. He required 40 stitches in his face.

In 1987, Michael Jackson's "Bad" debuts at #1 on the UK album chart just as he kicks off his first solo world tour in Yokohama, Japan. The sixteen month concert series, which includes an entourage of 250 people, will play before a total audience of 4.4 million and take in over $125 million.

Morrissey left The Smiths for a solo career in 1987.

In 1990, Christine McVie and Stevie Nicks announced they would leave Fleetwood Mac at the end of their current tour.

In 1991, although Hall and Oates' career was on the down swing in The United States, the pair played to a sold out show at the Mexico National Auditorium in Mexico. Their single "So Close" had made it to number eleven in the fall of 1990. Although their more recent efforts haven't done as well as their earlier material, Hall and Oates are still the best selling Rock duo of all time.

In 1997, founder of the Polar Music record label, songwriter, producer and ABBA’s manager Stig Anderson died of a heart attack. Anderson co-wrote some of ABBA’s biggest hits, such as “Waterloo,” “Mamma Mia” and :Fernando.” His funeral was broadcast live on Swedish television – an honor otherwise only reserved for distinguished statesmen or royalty.

In 2000, the family of Jimi Hendrix released 56 rare tracks in a 4-CD boxed set, "The Jimi Hendrix Experience."

In 2002, the house that Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) lived in as a child, from 11-15, was sold on eBay for $210,000. The house had been valued at $52,660 in 2000.

In 2003, the Beatles sued Apple (the computer maker) saying that their company logo infringed on that for the Apple record label. not sure of the outcome, but sheeesh, it's a freakin' apple!

In 2003, Johnny Cash, "The Man in Black" who became a towering figure in American music with such hits as "Folsom Prison Blues", "I Walk the Line", and "A Boy Named Sue", died at the age of 71. During his career, Cash won 11 Grammys, most recently in 2003, when "Give My Love To Rose" earned him honors as Best Male Country Vocal Performance. He also notched fourteen number 1 Country music hits. He was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1980 and inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. Two of his most popular albums were recorded live at Folsom Prison in 1968 and at San Quentin in 1969. Many people wrongly thought he had served prison time himself. He never did, although he did spend the odd night in jail during his youth and battled addictions to pills on and off throughout his life.



In 2004, a benefit tribute to the Ramones was held in Hollywood with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eddie Vedder, Henry Rollins and X.

In 2006, the iTunes Music Store reached 1.5 billion songs and 45 million videos sold.

In 2007, the surviving members of Led Zeppelin announced they would reform for a star-studded tribute concert in London. Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones would play at a show to remember the late Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. The place of Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, who died in 1980, would be taken by his son Jason. The one-off concert, the trio's first performance for 19 years, would take place at the O2 arena in London on 26 November with tickets costing £125. All profits from the show would go towards scholarships in Ertegun's name.

In 2008, David Gilmour announced that despite appearing onstage with Roger Waters in London in 2005, there will be no Pink Floyd reunion in the near future. "It isn't to do with animosity or anything like that. It's just that I've done that. I've been there, I've done it."

In 2009, Steve Jobs announced that Apple's iTunes had 88% of the legal U.S. music download market.

STAIND Announces Special Show In NYC To Benefit Families Of 9/11 Victims

Massachusetts rockers STAIND have announced they will mark the release of their new self-titled album by performing a special show in New York City to benefit the families of 9/11 victims. The show will be held at the Best Buy Theater in Times Square on September 15. In commemoration of the 10th anniversary of 9/11, tickets to the show will be priced at $9.11, with all revenue from the show to benefit the families of 9/11 victims.

"As the release of our new album coincides with the 10th anniversary of 9/11, we wanted to use the attention to make the point that there is still much work for all of us to do," said Aaron Lewis, lead singer of STAIND. "We are deliberately making the ticket price $9.11 to underscore the point that if enough of us do just a little bit, together we can make a big difference in the lives of the families whose members made the supreme sacrifice for our country."

ROCK MUSIC MENU: Making the case for vinyl: It’s a comeback!

A couple weeks ago, I walked into a local specialty music store that shall go unnamed. But you know the type; they sell guitars, amplifiers, snare drums, pedals, etc. I was looking for a dustcover for my new turntable, a Stanton STR8.150. Online, it had said this was one of the official dealers for accessories to the record players.

But when I asked for the dustcover, an older lady said that not only did they not have any record players let alone accessories, but informed me in a rather grandmotherly manner that, “Sweetie, vinyl has been on the way out for a longtime now … so you’re probably going to be out of luck wherever you look.”

Though the reaction was slightly better than the one I received at Best Buy when I asked where turntable accessories were located (“I’m sorry sir, but we don’t carry furniture.”), my senior citizen friend could not have been more wrong in her assertion that vinyl was near extinct.

The fact of the matter is vinyl has been on an upswing for years, as audiophiles have tired of MP3 compression and digital quality in other formats like CDs and streaming. It’s become something that is being embraced by bands and fans alike, a comeback that shows no signs of slowing down; especially as artists begin to dedicate more time and effort into vinyl, fans are paying more attention.

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES - There are a few ways one might discover Caveman Vintage Music, a nearly two-month-old instrument and vinyl record store in Chinatown. There's the Internet, as well as word-of-mouth in the collector community.

Then there is the very likely scenario of ambling past Caveman on the way to, or from, the Spring Street Smokehouse next door. Chances are passersby will hear some sweet tunes wafting out the door of the store at 650 N. Spring St. It could be, say, a 1960s recording of the brother guitar duo Santo and Johnny, or perhaps it's just a talented customer trying out one of the nearly two dozen vintage guitars.

The shop caters to musicians and audiophiles of all kinds. It's half instrument store and repair shop, half vinyl record depot, with a pinch of vintage oddities - they're currently hawking a working Atari system with a few dozen games. Here's a look at What's In Store:

In 1962, the BBC banned Monster Mash by Bobby Boris Pickett & the Crypt Kickers, saying it was offensive. They eventually relented and the song went on to be a UK #3 hit in 1973.

In 1963, London's Daily Mirror prints a Donald Zec interview with The Beatles under the heading "Four Frenzied Little Lord Fauntleroys Who Are Making £5,000 Every Week." huh?

In 1965, The Byrds begin recording “Turn! Turn! Turn!” Unlike on their first hit, “Mr. Tambourine Man,” members of the group itself were permitted to play instead of session musicians.

"The Last Train to Clarksville" was released as a single by the Monkees in 1966.

By the first week of November, it will be the top tune in the nation. The lyrics describe a phone call by a military man to his girl, asking that she 'take the last train to Clarksville' so they can have one last night together before he has to leave on the morning train.

"The Last Train to Clarksville" was written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, a songwriting team who came up with many songs for the Monkees. They also wrote songs for Chubby Checker and Jay And The Americans.

Boyce and Hart wrote this as a protest to the Vietnam War. They had to keep this quiet in order to get it recorded, but it is about a guy who gets drafted and goes to fight in the war. The train is taking him to an army base, and he knows he may die in Vietnam. At the end of the song he states, "I don't know if I'm ever coming home."

Bobby Hart: "We were just looking for a name that sounded good. There's a little town in Northern Arizona I used to go through in the summer on the way to Oak Creek Canyon called Clarksdale. We were throwing out names, and when we got to Clarksdale, we thought Clarksville sounded even better. We didn't know it at the time, [but] there is an Air Force base near the town of Clarksville, Tennessee - which would have fit the bill fine for the story line. We couldn't be too direct with The Monkees. We couldn't really make a protest song out of it - we kind of snuck it in."

Hart got the idea for the lyrics when he turned on the radio and heard the end of The Beatles' "Paperback Writer." He thought Paul McCartney was singing "Take the last train," and decided to use the line when he found out McCartney was actually singing "Paperback Writer."

The Monkees didn't play on this. The 4 members of the group were chosen from over 400 applicants to appear on a TV show based on The Beatles movie A Hard Day's Night. The show was about a fictional band, so the members were chosen more for their looks and acting ability than for their musical talent. Session musicians played on their albums.

This was The Monkees' first single. It was released shortly after their TV show started on NBC and got a lot of publicity as a result. The Monkees followed this up with another hit, "I'm A Believer," and had several more hits before their show was canceled in 1968. Eventually, the group wrote their own songs and played their own instruments.



Also in 1966, the Supremes achieve their seventh US number one record when "You Can't Hurry Love" tops the Billboard chart. Phil Collins would enjoy similar success with the song sixteen years later when his rendition also went to number one.

The number one album in the US in 1966 was 'Revolver by the Beatles.

1967, Elvis Presley recorded “Guitar Man” at RCA studio, Nashville, Tennessee.

In 1973, The Rolling Stones single "Star Star", from the "Goat's Head Soup" album, was banned from airplay on England's BBC because it contained the word "Star-fucker" in the chorus. It's not just sung once, but the word is repeated a dozen times. so what? get over it....

The New York Dolls split in 1974.

In 1977, David Bowie accepts Bing Crosby's invitation to appear as a special guest on Bing's annual Christmas television special. Bowie and Bing sing duets on "Little Drummer Boy" and "Peace on Earth". The songs are recorded for Crosby's album "Merrie Olde Christmas".

In 1979, ABBA began their first North American tour more than five years after reaching the Top Ten in the US with "Waterloo". The group split up in 1980, but received a $1 billion offer in February, 2000, from an American-British consortium to re-unite for 100 concerts. They turned it down. yeh, i would have done the same thing....who needs another billion?......

Also in 1979, Patti Smith announced to a crowd in Florence, Italy that she was retiring from live performances.

"She's So Cold" by the Rolling Stones was released in 1980.

In 1988, Guns N' Roses enjoyed a number one single with "Sweet Child O' Mine", written for Axl Rose's then girlfriend, Erin Everly, the daughter of The Everly Brothers' eldest sibling, Don Everly.

In 1990, the Las Vegas Hard Rock Cafe opened.

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" was released on September 10, 1991 as the lead single from their iconic LP 'Nevermind.'

In a January 1994 Rolling Stone interview, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain revealed that "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was an attempt to write a song in the style of the Pixies, a band he greatly admired. He explained:

"I was trying to write the ultimate pop song. I was basically trying to rip off the Pixies. I have to admit it. When I heard the Pixies for the first time, I connected with that band so heavily that I should have been in that band—or at least a Pixies cover band. We used their sense of dynamics, being soft and quiet and then loud and hard."

Cobain came up with the song's title when his friend Kathleen Hanna, at the time the lead singer of the Riot Grrrl punk band Bikini Kill, spray painted "Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit" on his wall.

The music video for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was the first for director Samuel Bayer. Bayer stated he believed he was hired because his test-reel was so poor the band anticipated his production would be "punk" and "not corporate." The video was based on the concept of a school concert which ends in anarchy and riot. Inspiration was taken from Jonathan Kaplan's 1979 movie Over the Edge, as well as the Ramones film Rock 'n' Roll High School.

Primus: Les Claypool Calls Upcoming Album Great And Funky

Flexible records were commercially introduced as the Eva-tone Soundsheet in 1960, but were previously available in the Soviet Union as "roentgenizdat", "bones" or "ribs", underground samizdat recordings on x-ray film. Every year between 1963 and 1969, The Beatles made a special Christmas recording which was made into a flexi disc and sent to members of their fan club.



In 1968, working at Abbey Road studio’s in London, The Beatles recorded overdubs onto the new George Harrison song “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” Eric Clapton added the guitar solo and became the first outside musician to play on a Beatles recording. George Harrison later said that Clapton's presence had another effect on the band: "It made them all try a bit harder; they were all on their best behavior."

While Eric Clapton was certainly the most prominent outside musician to first appear on a Beatles record, many others had preceded him. George Martin played keyboard on several tracks, including his famous sped-up harpsichord solo on "In My Like" and there was the string quartet on "Eleanor Rigby," the piccolo trumpet on "Penny Lane" and the full orchestra (plus the room's air conditioner) on "A Day In the Life." Though not technically a musician, roadie Mal Evans often added handclaps and whatever else was needed during recording sessions, such as helping hold down the final piano chord on "A Day in the Life." Thus, Eric was not the first but was, without a doubt, an invaluable part of that recording.

Famously forged in a cauldron of intense artistic pressure, the Magic Band emerged as a group unlike any other in popular music. Under the tenacious tutelage of Don Van Vliet, better known as Captain Beefheart, this strikingly innovative unit took their music to unexplored places, creating a musical language all their own. Throughout the band’s chaotic history with Beefheart, drummer John “Drumbo” French served as the chief translator, deciphering the Captain’s often cryptic instructions into a discernable direction for the band. His tireless efforts provided the essential conduit through which Beefheart’s multi-hued compositional visions transformed into concrete audio sculptures. In simpler terms, he was the glue.

In response to repeated fan requests, French assembled an all-star cast of Magic Band veterans—Denny “Freebo Reelers” Walley/guitar, Gary “Mantis” Lucas/guitar, Mark “Rockette Morton” Boston/bass and Michael Traylor/drums—and brought them to the U.K. for several concert tours between 2003 and 2006. Freed from the confines of his drum kit, French stepped into the front man role, singing and playing harmonica. Exploring songs from the Magic Band’s rich catalog, the group returned to these compositions with fervor, faithfully recreating them while simultaneously adding new sonic colors to the palette. Enraptured audiences across the empire reveled in the revived music, thrilled to hear the long-silent repertoire performed again.

This recording captures an especially memorable performance at the intimate Zodiac club in Oxford, England from June 6th, 2005. Riding the momentum of two successful concerts in Portsmouth and Penzance, the group was careful to keep their focus and not become overconfident. That night, surrounded by an enthusiastic audience that included many friends and acquaintances, the band played a transcendent set. As French relates in the album’s liner notes, “It was on this night when I was able to savor the words and music of Don Van Vliet and in a sense ‘re-discover’ the greatness of the work. I could feel the power of the compositions as they rained down upon the crowd, and I found myself laughing all over again at many of the double-entendres, and euphemisms.” How fortunate, then, that tape was rolling on this enchanted evening! John French personally mixed these eighteen tracks for release, ensuring that the zeitgeist of this special show would be preserved for all time. In 1935, the Hoboken Four, with member Frank Sinatra, appeared on the Major Bowes Amateur Hour.

In 1952, after Atlantic Records bought Ray Charles’ contract from Swingtime, Charles recorded his first session for Atlantic, cutting four songs. Over the next seven years, he would record such classics as “Mess Around,” “I Got a Woman,” “Hallelujah, I Love Her So” and “What’d I Say.”

In 1954, radio personality Alan Freed begins broadcasting on New York's WINS at an annual salary of $75,000. Although the phrase "rock and roll" had been around for a while, Freed is generally given credit for making it popular.

In 1958, Dick Clark signed a recording contract with ABC-Paramount Records. His first release is an album by the Bandstanders of current hits.

In 1965, an advertisement in Variety announced auditions for the Monkees. Among those who tried and failed were Stephen Stills, Danny Hutton, Paul Williams and Charles Manson.

In 1971, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences presents Elvis Presley with the Bing Crosby Award, given to performers who "during their lifetimes, have made creative contributions of outstanding artistic or scientific significance to the field of phonograph records."

In 1973, The Allman Brothers started a five week run at the top of the US album chart with "Brothers And Sisters", the group's only US #1 LP.

In 1973, Marvin Gaye started a two-week run at #1 on the US singles chart with “Let’s Get it On,” his second US #1.



In 1977, guitarist Jimmy McCulloch left Wings to help re-form The Small Faces. McCulloch had played with Paul McCartney’s band on the Venus and Mars and Wings at the Speed of Sound albums, as well as on the Wings Over America tour. He died two years later at the age of 26.

In 1988, Elton John sold some of his costumes and concert memorabilia at an auction in London for $6.2 million.

In 1993, Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love appeared on stage together at a show in Hollywood. They performed the Nirvana song “Pennyroyal Tea.”

In 1997, Derek Taylor, the publicist for The Beatles died at age 67. Taylor had been responsible for many of the legends surrounding their career and had also worked with The Beach Boys and The Byrds. In 1967, he helped organize the Monterey Pop Festival together with Lou Adler and John Philips. He helped launch The Beatles Anthology in the ’90s.

In 2003, David Bowie played the first interactive concert which was sent to 21 movie theaters in Europe. Audience members could talk to him via ISDN lines

DEAR JERRY: My curiosity about an unusual record, by the Jack Halloran Singers, prompted an internet search, which directed me to one of your December 2001 columns.

That week you got a letter from Jack's daughter, Dawn Halloran, confirming his 1957 original “Little Drummer Boy” first came titled “Carol of the Drum.” That was one year before Harry Simeone's famous version.

What I have is a seven-inch Columbia Transcription (ZPC-8684), which I cannot play because it runs at 78 rpm.

Apparently a disclaimer of sorts, the label also states: “Pressed in U.S.A. But Not Recorded By Columbia Records.”

The full title is “G/B for Me,” whatever that means. A white sticker above the hole may be covering some other print. The reverse side is all blank, with no grooves and a plain white label with no printing.

Lastly, the label credits “The Jack Halloren Singers. A typo perhaps?

DEAR KEVIN: This recording is unusual in more ways than one.

You have a Columbia custom pressing, the client in this case being St. Louis-based Griesedieck Brothers Brewery. The identification number points to this being a 1948 or '49 production, which would only have been made at 78 rpm.

The “G/B” has a dual meaning; either Griesedieck Brothers or Great Beer.

At first glance, one might think this disc contains typical radio commercials, such as the :30 and :60 spots so commonly heard.

That is not the case at all.

“G/B for Me” is a complete, professionally produced 2:14 song. Apart from the message, it is similar to most any popular recording at the time.

As for the lyrics, they sing the praises of the brewery's aging process: “It's G/B for me, aging makes the difference. G/B is aged longer than other beers. It's aged longer, far longer by Griesedieck Brothers. For finest quality lager beer, sing out with all the others.”

The Griesedieck family began brewing beer over 100 years ago, and are still doing so. They are very well known in the Midwest.

Though none of the current staff were around in 1958, I managed to speak with Bob Griesedieck, who has a file copy of this record. Bob is uncertain of its purpose, but allows for the possibility that this disc might have been given away as part of some sports promotion, possibly tying in with St. Louis Cardinals baseball or St. Louis University basketball games. We do know the Griesediecks held the radio sponsorship rights for both teams at that time.

As for the “Halloren” spelling, that is an error. It should be Halloran.


DEAR JERRY: In the pop and rock vinyl era, there were many two-record albums, but sets of three or more were rare.

I remember only three: “All Things Must Pass” (George Harrison), the first “Woodstock” album, and Chicago's “Live at Carnegie Hall.” Are there any others?

DEAR WARREN: Even if we eliminate classical, jazz, soundtracks, various artists compilations, mail-order special products (Reader's Digest, Longines, Candlelite, etc.), and foreign albums, there are still too many to list.

IZ ZAT SO? Though we did not include multi-disc jazz sets in the above research, we must acknowledge the outstanding series of Mosaic boxed sets.

From 1983 to 2005, Mosaic churned out over 100 vinyl collections, and about 250 on CDs.

Their individual vinyl edition boxes include as many as 23 LPs.

Then there is one triple box behemoth, “The Complete Commodore Jazz Recordings,” containing 66 LPs and probably with a price tag in the $800 to $1,200 range.
