Robin Gibb died Sunday after a long battle with cancer.

"The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announced with great sadness that Robin passed away today following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery," says a statement. "The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time."

While still with The Jeff Beck Group, Rod Stewart signed as a solo artist with Lou Reizner, an American Mercury Records producer living in the UK at the time, who had his ear to the musical firmament.

An Old Raincoat Will Never Let You Down (VO4) on the now highly collectible Vertigo label was issued first in America in late 1969 as The Rod Stewart Album on Mercury, with lame "invitation" cover art similar to what The Rolling Stones were forced into on Beggar's Banquet. The UK version came winter of 1970 with far more eclectic and interesting cover art.

Perhaps the old guy on the cover and in the gatefold was felt to be a "turn-off" for the youth crowd, but the music wasn't, though it wasn't a big seller at the time.

Gasoline Alley, the second album produced by Stewart and Reizner was the one that really jump started Rod's solo career (the first album has more Rod originals and is also worthy of a reissue).

Again, it was felt that the original album art was not suitable for American kids, but it was so far superior and more evocative of the album title (you be the judge):

You can't feel the pebbled, textured cover, but trust me as a "thing" to have and hold it beats the American edition.

For some reason American Mercury dug showing Rod as snookered. He looks out of it on the back of the American version of Gasoline Alley and on the inside too. And check out his out of it look on his fourth Merc solo album Never a Dull Moment. The inside of the UK gatefold features a handsome shot of Rod reclining in some hot red slacks. Don't ask me why American Mercury chose to show Stewart as a drunk. Maybe Mercury was pushing a Dean Martin vibe for Rod?

Forgive the artwork digression: this album shows off both Stewart's prodigious and original singing talent, drawn from but not imitative of Sam Cooke, and Mr. Reizner's A&R talents. The song choices were superb for an album designed to be an intimate, folky showcase for the singer and the backup band, the core of which was The Small Faces without Steve Marriott (my favorite rock singer of all time with Paul Rodgers second) who had quit to form Humble Pie with Peter Frampton, plus from The Jeff Beck group, Ron Wood, who would later join up to form Faces fronted by Stewart and on some tracks the late drummer Mikey Waller.

So you could look at this as the Faces audition tape and what an audition! Reizner and Stewart went for a countrified rock sound, adding mandolin on the title track and violin on some others. The Stewart originals, "Gasoline Alley," "Lady Day," and "Jo's Lament" fit the scene as do the smartly chosen covers, including Bobby Womack's "It's All Over Now" best known to the rock audience from The Rolling Stones cover. Here it's delivered as a folksy, syncopated celebration more than as an F.U. song and so dilutes the message.

"Only a Hobo" was a cast off from Dylan's 1963 recordings for The Times They Are a-Changin' album (it was originally one of the Witmark demo songs that probably circulated among A&R guys like Reizner) and though Dylan later recorded it again, Stewart's version is definitive. His performance here alone makes this album worth owning.

The side ends with a cover of The Small Faces' Marriott-Lane composition "My Way of Giving" and while it doesn't hold a candle to Marriott's impassioned, high energy original, it has its own charms and with the back up of Lane, Ian McLagan and Kenney Jones joined by Wood, was really the first song released by Faces. What a side!

Side two opens with "Country Comfort,"  the John/Taupin song that probably inspired the album's musical concept. While it is enjoyable, the message it sends is: "don't cover Elton because he does it better."  "Cut Across Shorty" was the rocking "B" side of the Eddie Cochran #1 single in the UK "Three Steps to Heaven" and could have been suggested for inclusion on the album by either Stewart or Reizner or both since Cochran was a big star in the UK.

Stewart's "Lady Day" (not about Billie Holiday) presages the theme of "Maggie May" as do elements of "Jo's Lament." The two show Rod's soggy sentimental side to great effect.

The album ends with the only rocker, the oft-covered one chord riffer "You're My Girl (I Don't Want to Discuss It)" highlighted by Ron Wood's soft/slash rhythm guitar.

There's not a musical dud on the record and with that back up band so cleanly and elegantly arranged, there's more to hear and appreciate with each play as your ear digs into the backdrop nooks and crannies.

The musical intimacy and comraderie intended by the producers is amplified by the recorded sound. The miking is close and free of processing. It's an honest, you might say somewhat primitive "what you tape is what you get" recording that's appealing in today's overprocessed world, but it's also not without its problems.

For one thing, there's little in the way of a bottom end foundation. It will not rock your world sonically. You have to draw yourself into the picture because it's not coming looking for you. The drums and bass have a slightly cardboardy sound, but that's kind of the way Kenney Jones tunes his kit. However the same kit recorded by Glynn Johns on Ogden's Nut Gone Flake (the round tobacco tin album) is mind-blowingly well recorded and will knock you on your butt. That album has some of the deepest bass ever put in a rock record's grooves ( but only on an original UK Immediate pressing). But I digress again!

Most importantly, Rod's voice is intimate and in the room. You'll hear every rasp-inducing node on his vocal cords and that's a good thing. Mo-Fi's mastering from a non-original source (hence the silver edition) is very, very good with one exception: there are a few really smeary sibilents, particularly on "Only a Hobo." I don't hear them on the original. One is really bad. I can't track it on my turntable, which is "pretty good" so I don't expect yours will fare much better. Deal with it, though I suggest Mo-Fi consider a "de-esser" in the future for highly sibilent vocals.

Since there isn't a great deal of bottom end on the record, I find that mid-level listening produces the best sonic results. If you play it too loud it can sound thin. Too soft and the Fletcher-Munson curve robs it of any bottom (unless you have a "loudness" button). Mid-level sounds best.

Still, compared to the UK original, this reissue is a bit thin and lacking in warmth the original has. It's kind of a trade off: the original is more inviting and "of a whole" and this reissue provides more detail, greater instrumental and vocal separation (the background vocal on "Country Comfort" has never sounded so distinct and separated in space, for instance). Considering the original tape wasn't available, it's a very good mastering job overall (other than the difficult sibilents).

Mo-Fi went with the original American artwork that doesn't hold up to the UK Vertigo outside and particularly on the inside, which is incredibly ugly, though there are a few good studio shots.

While the guy soiled himself later to become a pop star with junk like "Hot Legs" and the rest, this album shows Rod Stewart at his most sincere.

Second irrelevant aside: co-producer Reizner was also responsible for a bizarre 1976 debacle called "All This and World War II" a grotesque film that combined stock WW III footage with songs by The Beatles interpreted by others including Elton John (with John Lennon using a pseudonym), The Bee Gees, Rod Stewart (not surprisingly), Jeff Lynne, The Four Seasons and Helen Reddy (!), Peter Gabriel Roy Wood and The London Symphony Orchestra (which did "The End"), among others.

So I got invited to the Boston premier and a group of us figured this would be great to see on acid. So we dropped and went. Well, on acid every molecule had meaning and brilliance. After all, when you're seeing the entire universe and God and hearing Beatles songs while watching things being blown up (including your mind), how could it not be the most meaningful film ever?

So the next day I told every movie and film critic in town that I knew, and I knew many, that they must go see it! So I went again and sat behind them, this time sober.

It took about about five minutes to realize what a big mistake I'd made. Ten minutes in they began turning around and asking me as if I was out of my mind. "That was last night!" I told them and we all got up and walked out, me really embarrassed, they really pissed!

Anyway, the Rod album is great and I promise I didn't listen or write this review on acid!

Donna Summer Dead at 63

Legendary disco diva Donna Summer has died.  In a statement, Summer's family praise the singer's religious faith.

"While we grieve her passing, we are at peace celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy," the statement reads. "Words truly can't express how much we appreciate your prayers and love for our family at this sensitive time."

Summer gained prominence during the disco era of the 1970s, and released a number of albums that have reach gold or platinum status, including the multiplatinum "Bad Girls" and "On the Radio, Volume I & II."  Her #1 Billboard Hot 100 hits included "Hot Stuff" and "MacArthur Park."

Summer won five Grammy Awards and became a member of the Dance Music Hall of Fame in 2004. She has been nominated for inclusion into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

DEAR JERRY: I just realized an interesting connection between my two favorites, Norah Jones and Adele. Other than their wonderful jazzy-bluesy throwback approach to music, that is.

They each had one big year of domination at the Grammys, and both have incredibly successful albums to their credit; in particular Norah's "Come Fly with Me," and Adele's "21."

We know Adele is far and away the hottest thing of the current decade, but could that also be said about Norah Jones in the 2000s?

DEAR BONNIE: Yes it could, and should, be said. So let's say it together.

Norah's sensational night came at the 45th Annual Grammy Awards (February 2003), honoring music issued in 2002. By the time they brought down the curtain, Jones owned Grammys in five key categories:

1. Best New Artist
2. Record of the Year: "Don't Know Why"
3. Best Female Pop Vocal Performance: "Don't Know Why"
4. Album of the Year: "Come Away with Me"
5. Best Pop Vocal Album: "Come Away with Me"

In the next few years, Norah ran her Grammy total to nine, with four more wins:

6. Record of the Year (for 2004): "Here We Go Again" (duet with Ray Charles)

For some industry observers, choosing "Here We Go Again" for Record of the Year was mind-boggling, strictly because, as a single release it didn't even make the nation's top 100 list.

Yes, it is the most-played track on the hugely successful "Genius Loves Company" album, but the Record of the Year is, with only one other exception, traditionally among a year's most popular singles. U2's "Walk On" (2001) is the other non-hit Record of the Year.

7. Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals (for 2004): "Here We Go Again" (duet with Ray Charles)
Now this is a more appropriate category, where sales of a single are inconsequential.

8. Best Female Pop Vocal Performance (for 2004): "Sunrise"
9. Album of the Year (for 2007): "River - The Joni Letters"

This jazz collection is actually Herbie Hancock's tribute to Joni Mitchell. Norah may sing only the lead track, "Court and Spark," but still shares in the Grammy gold.

Did you know "River - The Joni Letters" is one of only two jazz recordings to win Album of the Year?

This first happened 47 years earlier, with the sensational "Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto (Featuring Antonio Carlos Jobim)." Highlighting this superb collection is "The Girl from Ipanema," itself a Grammy winner as Record of the Year for 1964.

Geethali Norah Jones Shankar was born March 30, 1979, the daughter of classical sitarist Ravi Shankar and Susan Jones, a concert producer with whom shared a home at the time.

When she turned 16, Geethali legally reduced her name to the more user-friendly Norah Jones.



IZ ZAT SO? The all-time No. 1 album by a female is Shania Twain's "Come On Over" (1997), now with worldwide sales in excess of 40 million units.

"Come On Over" is also the top-selling album by any Canadian artist, as well as any so-called country music album, regardless of the performer's gender.

Thanks to some technical wizardry, all but one of its 16 songs came out not only with the original country sound, but remixed to appeal to "pop and international" buyers.

The only track that remained the same on the international version is "Rock This Country."

Other edits, remixes, and even bonus tunes were added to some repackaged discs, motivating Twain's fans to buy several editions of this blockbuster.

Oh yes, Shania co-wrote, with her producer, Robert John Lange, all of the "Come On Over" music.

Tower Groove Records is worth its weight in vinyl

Call it a rags-to-record story: Fueled by frustration with other labels, the members of bluesy local quintet Magic City joked about the idea of creating their own. They could just do it themselves, right? (Right?) With bravado on the brain, it wasn't long before organist Adam Hesed took the thought seriously. Last June he had one idea, no plan, no support system and, even worse, no funding. In their place, he had sweat equity, good friends, a few beers and a borrowed back yard.

He made do.

The result is Tower Groove Records, a label-cum-co-op established to organize the St. Louis scene while promoting it with the kind of aggressive good nature cemented through decades in its venues and basements.

This is the 25th anniversary of the show, and several dealers will be bringing a wide variety of classical music.

"I've got vintage audiophile LPs, high-grade import CDs from Japan and a ton of sealed classical records from the 1970s and 80s," said Steve Young, proprietor of Record Wonderland, one music dealer participating in the show. "I'm also going to have hundreds of very nice records selling at just $1 each. I've been saving up great material all year for this event, but I also bring a fair amount of cash as I know the other dealers will have some fabulous thing I need to get for my own collection"

In previous shows, dealers arrived with a wide array of music, most classical-related, though some dealers bring other genres as well.

"Whether you are looking for baroque or avant-garde, or anything in between, it will be there," said Bob Craig, a show organizer who will also be selling records at the event. "It only happens once a year, so anyone who loves classical music will not want to miss it."

Venturing out from the studio to the road, Soulsavers were invited to support Depeche Mode on the European leg of the band’s vast 2010 Tour of the Universe. Here, the seeds of The Light The Dead See were sewn. With Gahan penning lyrics for the music and recording his own vocals in New York, then Machin building up the results into fully-formed and arranged epics, the international project was a case of “chemistry working”. The album was mastered at Abbey Road earlier this year.

“There was no real script,” says the Rich Machin of the extraordinary fourth album The Light The Dead See, a set of songs of majesty and momentum. “It just rolled and rolled; it was effortless.” Joining forces with Dave Gahan it immediately became clear that this was going to be something very special. “We realized we were coming from the same place in so many ways,” adds Machin. “He’s really laid himself bare on this record, his contribution is astonishing.” Says Gahan, “Everything about it was relatively unplanned, surprising: a magical thing. We were a perfect match and I’m very, very excited about this record.”

Soulsavers – the music and production team of Rich Machin and Ian Glover – have been a growing force since 2003’s debut Tough Guys Don’t Dance. 2007’s It’s Not How Far You Fall, It’s The Way You Land brought their dark flair to a wider audience. The inimitable Mark Lanegan served as primary singer, though there were also vocal contributions from Will Oldham and Jimi Goodwin. In 2009, third album Broken confirmed that Soulsavers were moving away from early electronica to earthier guitars, use of space and what Machin described as “a soulful twist.” Lanegan again led the vocals on stand-outs such as ‘You Will Miss Me When I Burn’ and ‘All The Way Down’, with other guest vocalists including Oldham again, Jason Pierce, Richard Hawley, Mike Patton and Gibby Haynes. Clearly, there was no shortage of acclaimed singers ready to lend their lungs to Soulsavers’ stirring, seductive, soothing or startling creations.

On June 13, IDW Publishing is bringing back the rock group KISS in comic form. Last year, Archie Comics released a story in which Archie met KISS. This time IDW is giving them marquee status.

According to IDW, the series is rooted in KISS fandom, featuring KISS characters like "Wicked" Lester, the Destroyer, She, the Elder, and more, but it will be very accessible to all comic readers.

And so it is with music.

But the days when each town boosted numerous record shops have long gone. The onslaught of high street chains, supermarkets and then the internet have put paid to the vast majority – so much so that recently a Record Shop Day was held internationally to celebrate this endangered species.

Here in Lynn we have one of the region’s most established vinyl record shops where, for 16 years, Tony Winfield has been feeding the musical passion of his customers with just about every genre imaginable.

Maybe Elvis is your king crooner, or you crave the death-metal screaming of Sepultura.


Perhaps you are among the jilted generation that wants to dig out the dulcet tones of The Damned or Crass from the glory days of punk.

Whatever it is that rocks your world, taking a step inside The Record Shop in Lynn’s St James Street is like a candy shop for musical vinyl lovers.

78 Project replicates original vinyl recording style

For the last few months the team behind the 78 Project have been travelling to diverse venues around New York, visiting artists such as Loudon Wainwright III, Roseanne Cash and Richard Thompson.


They are recording performances in exactly the same way that folk pioneer Alan Lomax recorded blues artists in the Mississippi Delta during the 1930s.

GENTLE GIANT - Acquiring The Taste

Gentle Giant's second album was released on July 16th. 1971 and finds British prog-rockers honing their signature sound under the guidance of legendary producer Tony Visconti who would later collaborate with David Bowie, Strawbs and others. It was a departure from the blues and soul styles found on their self-titled debut, more experimental and more discordant with more varied instrumentation.

 As part of the album's original liner notes, the band made this (now) famous declaration: "It is our goal to expand the frontiers of contemporary popular music at the risk of being very unpopular. We have recorded each composition with the one thought that it should be unique, adventurous and fascinating. It has taken every shred of our combined musical and technical knowledge to achieve this. From the outset we have abandoned all preconceived thoughts of blatant commercialism. Instead we hope to give you something far more substantial and fulfilling. All you need to do is sit back and acquire the taste."

 "Acquiring The Taste" is a major advance over their first album without sacrificing the element of surprise and elements of hard rock and Gregorian chants mix freely throughout this album. While the ensemble justifiably garnered comparisons to contemporaries such as Yes and King Crimson, Gentle Giant often proved to be more whimsical than those acts as revealed on the lifting "Pantagruel's Nativity".

 This exclusive reissue is available on deluxe 180 gram vinyl with lacquers cut from flat transfers 24bit/96kHz files made from the original UK masters and displays original graphics, Vertigo's classic "swirl" label etc.

IMPORTANT: Classic Reissues version includes 'correct start' (no unsweep) at the beginning of the album's title track i.e. first two synthesizer notes are usually heard at the wrong pitch before they finally stabilize which something Gentle Giant fans had been requesting for some time.

Will Jack White Play The First Vinyl Record In Outer Space?

Jack White has recently revealed he has an ambition to play the first ever vinyl record in outer space.

The former White Stripes man was speaking to astronaut Buzz Aldrin in a feature for Interview Magazine and told Aldrin, who was the second ever man to walk on the moon, that he is working on a "secret project" to get one of the songs on his Third Man Records label to be the "first vinyl record played in outer space".

Asked how he planned to do it, White said he was planning "to launch a balloon that carries a vinyl record player.  And figure out a way to drop the needle with all that turbulence up there and ensure that it will still play."

It would be a mistake to view Sum 41 as just another second-rate band cashing in on the early-'00s punk-pop boom, even if it did recruit Jerry Finn to produce All Killer No Filler. Just as Finn had done for both blink-182 and Green Day, he charges Sum 41's punk-pop with a razor-sharp edge, the sort of dynamic in-your-face sound that helps this music cross over to MTV and radio so well. Besides the notable production, a lot of credit should go to the band as well. Its songwriting is obviously more diverse here than it was a year earlier on its debut album, Half Hour of Power; for example, the group's rap and '80s metal influences rise to the surface more frequently here than on that first album and instill a fun sense of camp. Jubilee celebrations as Occupy movement to release ‘Folk the Banks’ album on 4 June

The upcoming Diamond Jubilee weekend is set to be a very special weekend as Occupation Records, a record label for the Occupy movement, releases its first album, Folk the Banks, with album artwork by Jamie Reid – famed for the iconic artwork of the Sex Pistols’ ‘God Save the Queen’ single released during Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee in 1977.

The album features original and exclusive tracks from Ani DiFranco, Billy Bragg, Chris T-T, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, Peggy Seeger, Ryan Harvey and Tao Rodriguez-Seeger. An embeddable Folk the Banks ‘sneak peek’ is available

  
Jamie Reid said: “It was an honour to be asked to do this artwork for the Occupy movement. I have been involved with doing ‘protest’ visuals since the early 70′s, and I hoped with this image to incorporate ideas from this source, putting them into a modern context within the birth of a whole new form of protest and resistance, against the increasing corruption and corporate greed of current policies and economics. Learn from the past. Live in the present. Look to the future.”

With all profits from the record label donated to the Occupy movement, other artists on the Folk the Banks album include The Nightwatchman: Tom Morello, Martha Wainright, Anais Mitchell, Show of Hands, King Blues, Leon Rosselson, The Young-uns, Oysterband, Chumbawumba, Jim Moray and Eddie Morton.

Tom Morello said: “The wealthiest CEO’s reward themselves with million dollar bonuses while millions are out of work. What can we do about it? We can protest against it, fight back against it, and sing songs that do both.”

Folk the Banks will be available digitally from Bank Holiday Monday 4 June, including via the Occupation Records website on a pay what you want basis. From Wednesday 6 June, it will be in record stores across the UK on CD and on vinyl.

DEAR JERRY: I am a collector of novelty records, which includes songs about pop icons, such as Elvis and the Beatles.

I spotted one in a recent sales catalog, listed by the seller as "Beatle Bug Boogie." It sounds a bit like an instrumental, but either way, if it's about the Beatles I'd want it. They are asking $25.

Do you know anything about this record? If you think the price is fair, I'll order it.

DEAR JARROD: The asking price is okay for a used but not abused copy. One in near-mint condition could have a $50 price tag.

But wait! Don't call yet!

The price is irrelevant because, although a novelty in its own way, this record has nothing to do with the Beatles. In fact, it came out in 1954, about 10 years before anyone even considered recording a Beatles novelty.

Perhaps it is an innocent mistake on the seller's part, but the correct title of this tune is "Beetle Bug Boogie." That alone, however, would not rule out a legit Beatles connection.

Several authentic 1960s Beatles novelties intentionally spell their name as if they were insects (e.g., "The Beetle"; "Beetle Bebop"; "Beetle Bug"; "Beetle Bug Jump"; "Beetle Dance"; and "Beetle Mania").

"Beetle Bug Boogie" (Arcade 120), by Jimmy Collett, is a hillbilly bopper about the boogie-woogie goings on at "an old bee hive … the place where the beetle bugs meet every night at nine, and a doodle bug band plays the beetle bug jive."

Among the fun-loving, creepy-crawling regulars are: caterpillars; glow worms; spiders; flies; tater bugs; skeeters; centipedes; grasshoppers; Japanese beetles; June bugs; ants; and, since it's their hive, some honeybees.

It is no surprise to learn their dance of choice is the jitterbug.






DEAR JERRY: Thanks to your piece about "Sioux City Sue," by Elton Britt, his is now my favorite version of this often recorded song.

But no matter whose I hear, from A (Gene Autry) to Z (Zeke Manners), they all make what I consider a geographical mistake.

DEAR DENVER SUE: I think I do.

Every recording I have of "Sioux City Sue" begins with "I drove a herd of cattle down from old Nebraska way, that's how I came to be in the state of I-o-way."

Assuming traditional usage of "down" meaning south, and "up" indicating north, a cattle drive from anywhere in Nebraska to Sioux City would not involve going south.

Sioux City, separated by the Missouri River, borders the northeast tip of Nebraska.

A more geographically correct itinerary, while maintaining the one-syllable cadence, would be "I drove a herd of cattle IN from old Nebraska way, that's how I came to be in the state of I-o-way."

There is, however, another possibility.

Though the object of this cowhand's affection identifies herself as Sioux City Sue, not once is it said that either one of them is actually in or even near Sioux City.

If the rendezvous point is anywhere south of the Sioux City-Waterloo-Dubuque parallel, the thundering herd could indeed be heading "down."

DEAR JERRY: Imagine my surprise to be reading about my uncle, Trooper Jim Foster, in your column.

I used to visit him at his place, Foster's Lazy Acres, in Lutz, Fla. He had a small recording studio there and we used to listen to all his records. He also had a Sunday TV show, "Bring 'Em Back Alive," on channel 10 in Tampa.

After his Florida Highway Patrol career, he served 10 years in the Florida House of Representatives. He later worked for the Division of Forestry and the Dept. of Motor Vehicles and Highway Safety. He retired in 1988.

Jim died in 1996 while building his dream cabin in the hills of Tennessee. He was 62.

I am going to send the article to my dad, now 81, who still misses his only brother. Thank you for the opportunity to remember my uncle and smile. It is indeed a small world.

IZ ZAT SO? Thousands of celebrity novelties exist, spoofing entertainers, politicians, sports figures, and anyone or anything in the news, yet rarely do you find them on the charts, much less among the Top 40.

In keeping with mention of Elvis and the Beatles, here are two exceptions: "The All American Boy," by Bill Parsons (a.k.a., Bobby Bare), about Elvis being drafted, which reached No. 2 in 1958, and "We Love You Beatles," by the Carefrees, No. 39 in 1964.
