DEAR JERRY: I have seen references made to three soundtracks originally released in the 1980s and '90s, and now available as limited editions on vinyl. But how limited are the editions?

They are "Pretty in Pink," "The Breakfast Club," and "Empire Records."

I know the "Empire Records" film featured far more songs than put on the CD, so I'm hoping the vinyl version has some of the previously unavailable tracks, such as ones by Dire Straits and AC/DC.

Are these still available, and if so for how much?

DEAR FRANK: New vinyl editions of all three soundtracks — each being a collection of cuts by various artists rather than true film scores — came out in conjunction with National Record Store Day, April 21, 2012.

"Pretty in Pink" (A&M 16652) is a single disc, appropriately on pink vinyl; "The Breakfast Club" (A&M 16615) is a "dandruff white vinyl" LP; and "Empire Records" (A&M 16609) a gold vinyl two-disc package.

Each is individually numbered with a total run of 5,000 made.

This marks the first time on vinyl for "Empire Records," a 1995 film, but "The Breakfast Club" (A&M 5045) and "Pretty in Pink" (A&M 5113) came out on vinyl, in 1985 and '86 respectively.

You're right about the "Empire Records" soundtrack, with both LP and CD having the same 15 tracks, providing only a fraction of the music heard in the movie.

Besides Dire Straits ("Romeo and Juliet") and AC/DC ("If You Want Blood [You've Got It]"), here are the other artists that didn't make it onto the soundtrack:

Adolescents; Ass Ponys; Billy White Trio; Buggles; Daniel Johnston; Dead Hot Workshop; Dirt Clods; Dishwalla; Fig Dish; Fitz of Depression; Flying Lizards; Full Tilt Gonzo; Gwar; Loose Diamonds; Maxwell Caulfield; Mouth Music; Noah Stone; Peg Boy; Poster Children; Queen Sarah Saturday; Quicksand; Sacrilicious; Sponge; Suicidal Tendencies; Sybil Vane; The The; and Throwing Muses.

All three of these National Record Store Day numbered edition soundtracks are still available on the secondary market, and usually with a $20 to $30 price tag.

DEAR JERRY: One of the great stories in music is Conway Twitty's incredible swing from big time rock star to even bigger time country star.

I know there were a few transition years in the early 1960s when he had no hits in either field, and it's one of those obscure, almost doo-wop, tunes I'm after.

One line that still sticks with me, sung in Conway's unmistakable growl, is "write a letter tonight."

Taking the hint, I am indeed writing you a letter tonight. Help me locate this record, which is not on any of his albums, 'cause I have them all.

DEAR GRACE: You're right about portions of this song, titled "Drop Me a Line," being in Conway's unmistakable growl. Only problem is it's not Conway doing the growling.

The singer of this obviously Twitty-inspired tune is Karl Hammel Jr., the same fellow who had the 1961 hit, "Summer Souvenirs" (Arliss 1007).

But the similarity on "Drop Me a Line" (Laurie 3170) goes far beyond the occasional growls. Karl sounds like Conway from start to finish, enough to fool even a staunch Twitty Bird like you.

Issued in June 1963, in the midst of a five-year dearth of hits for Conway, Hammel's sound-alike homage undeservedly met the same fate, and failed to chart.

In the summer of '65, Conway departed MGM and signed with Decca Records, and plunged into the rapidly growing country scene.

His first single for them, "That Kind of Girl" (Decca 31833), may have been overlooked by country programmers, but the next one, "Guess My Eyes Were Bigger Than My Heart" (Decca 31897), made the Top 20, and he was off and running — until June 5, 1993.

Stricken with abdominal pain while performing in Branson, Mo., he was rushed to a hospital in nearby Springfield where he died of an aortic aneurysm. He was 59.



IZ ZAT SO? In the 27 years after Conway Twitty morphed to country, he amassed 55 No. 1 hits on one or more of the national weekly charts — more than anyone except George Strait, who this year (2012) scored his 59th.

For his entire career (1957-1993), 110 of Conway's singles made the charts.

Sandy Special Brings In Nearly 23 Million

NBC is reporting that its benefit concert for Superstorm Sandy victims drew close to $23 million in donations to the American Red Cross.  Friday's hour-long telecast included performances by artists native to the areas hardest-hit by the strom, including New Jersey natives Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi and Billy Joel of New York's Long Island. Other musicians who took part in the special included Sting, Christina Aguilera, Mary J. Blige, Tina Fey and Jon Stewart.

Sandy's assault last week killed more than 100 people in 10 states and created widespread damage and power outages.

We hope those affected by Sandy are safe and can rebuild from this terrible disaster.

In 1973, KISS signed its first record deal with the newly-formed Casablanca Records. KISS was the first band signed to the upstart label, which helped launch the success of the hottest band in the world.

After seeing KISS play a showcase concert at Le Tang’s ballet studio, Casablanca founder Neil Bogart quickly offered KISS a record contract. From 1974 to 1982, Casablanca Records released 29 KISS singles on 45 RPM records. These singles were released for sale to the public, used for commercial radio airplay and to promote album sales. In many cases, as a bonus to the fans who already owned the record albums, many of these singles featured entirely different mixes, edits, and material that did not appear on any album. These musical snapshots of KISS’ formative years have never been released in a commemorative singles edition until now.

Out of the 29 singles featured in the boxset, there are 26 highly collectable picture sleeves from original single releases around the world and a 36 page booklet with unreleased photos plus track annotations by Keith Leroux, Captain of KISSOnline.com, and Jill Cataldo.

Gene, Paul, Ace & Peter each released solo albums in 1978 for Casablanca. Each of their 4 respective singles were released in the UK in color vinyl and with a mask for each member. Led Zeppelin have been gearing up for the Nov. 19 release of ‘Celebration Day,’ and now the group have posted the video clip for an epic live version of ‘Kashmir’ online to give fans a teaser. ‘Celebration Day’ captures Zeppelin in their 2007 reunion performance at London’s 02 Arena, which paid tribute to Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. DEAR JERRY: I read your piece about Russ Conway, who had a No. 1 hit in the UK ("Roulette"), and yet never could manage a hit in America.

Specifically during my pop music period (1960 - 1975), what other British No. 1 hit makers failed to appear on a U.S. chart?

DEAR AUDREY: Love the question, and I think you'll find the results fascinating:

1960: "What Do You Want to Make Those Eyes at Me For" (Emile Ford and the Checkmates); "Starry Eyed" (Michael Holliday); "Apache" (Shadows); "Tell Laura I Love Her" (Ricky Valance)

Why "What Do You Want to Make Those Eyes at Me For" did not chart in the U.S. is a mystery, especially since it was issued twice that year (Andie 5018 and Cub 9063).

Traditionally, most American hits were covered by foreign artists, as is the case with Michael Holliday and "Starry Eyed," a 1959 U.S. release by Gary Stites (Carlton 521).

Occasionally the reverse is true, like the smash hit instrumental "Apache." Originally by the Shadows, the hit in America came out in late 1960 by then unknown Jorgen Ingmann (Atco 6184), and reached No. 2. Just a few weeks earlier, ABC-Paramount (45-10,138) released the Shadows' version, but to no avail.

Valance's "Tell Laura I Love Her" is a cover of Ray Peterson's Top 10 hit (RCA Victor 47-7745).

1961: "You're Driving Me Crazy" (Temperance Seven); "Johnny Remember Me" (John Leyton)

Rudy Vallee and His Connecticut Yankees recorded "You're Driving Me Crazy (What Did I Do)" in 1931 (Victor 22572), and the Temperance Seven perform it in the unmistakable Valle style. Not issued in the U.S.

Leyton's "Johnny Remember Me" came out stateside as ABC-Paramount 45-10,257.

1962: "Wonderful Land" (Shadows); "Come Outside" (Mike Sarne & Wendy Richards); "A Picture of You" (Joe Brown & the Bruvvers)

These three were all given a shot in America, but none scored: "Wonderful Land" (Atlantic 2146); "Come Outside" (Cameo 220); and Joe Brown's excellent "A Picture of You" (London 10517).

1963 "Dance On" (Shadows); "Diamonds" (Jet Harris & Tony Meehan); "Foot Tapper" (Shadows)

Three instrumentals, two by the Shadows and one by two members of the Shadows:

U.S. labels picked up "Dance On" (Atlantic 2177) and "Diamonds" (London 9589) but not "Foot Tapper," since the Challengers' original version was already getting some regional action (Vault 904).

1964: "Juilet" (Four Pennies)

A ballad in the style of Gerry and the Pacemakers, issued in the States by Philips (40202).

1968: "Everlasting Love" (Love Affair)

Though a Top 15 hit by Robert Knight the previous year (Rising Sons 705), the Love Affair's remarkable and distinctive "Everlasting Love" should have been a smash (Date 1591) in this hemisphere.

1969: "(If Paradise Is) Half As Nice" (Amen Corner)

Simultaneously issued in the U.S. by Immediate (5013).

1970: "Wand'rin Star" (Lee Marvin); "Back Home" (England World Cup Squad)

On the UK 45, Lee Marvin's "Wand'rin Star" is backed with "I Talk to the Trees," by Clint Eastwood. The American split single (Paramount 0010) still has Clint on the B-side, but with "Best Things." All three tunes are from the "Paint Your Wagon" soundtrack.

Not surprisingly, the England World Cup Squad probably crossed the Atlantic, but their music didn't.

1971: "Grandad" (Clive Dunn); "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" (Middle of the Road); "Ernie (The Fastest Milkman in the West)" (Benny Hill)

Capitol American issued both "Grandad" (3064) and "Ernie (The Fastest Milkman in the West) (3272).

Domestically, it took Mac and Katie Kissoon to take "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" (ABC 11306) to the Top 20.

1972: "Mouldy Old Dough" (Lieutenant Pigeon)

Categorized an instrumental, though the Lieutenant frequently chimes in saying "mouldy old dough." Here in the New World, the Pigeon's masterpiece (London 1043) failed to generate any dough.

1973: "See My Baby Jive" (Wizzard); "Angel Fingers" (Wizzard); "Eye Level" (Simon Park Orchestra)

United Artists picked up "See My Baby Jive" (UA-272), but not "Angel Fingers." And yes, this is Roy Woods Wizzard.

Vanguard (35175) gave "Eye Level," an instrumental, a fighting chance, but no cigar.

1974: "Tiger Feet" (Mud); "Jealous Mind" (Alvin Stardust); "The Cat Crept In" (Mud); "Everything I Own" (Ken Boothe); "Lonely This Christmas" (Mud)

Of the three Mud chart-toppers, only "Tiger Feet" came out here (Bell 45602).

It was also Bell who introduced Alvin Stardust to America, with his 1963 "My Coo Ca Choo" (Bell 45454), which peaked at No. 2 in Britain. Curiously, they passed on "Jealous Mind," Alvin's top-selling UK single.

Ken Boothe's entry is the 1972 Bread hit (Elektra 45765).

1975: "Streets of London" (Ralph McTell); "Whispering Grass" (Windsor Davies As B.S.M. Williams and Don Estelle As Gunner Sugden); "Three Steps to Heaven" (Showaddywaddy); "D.i.v.o.r.c.e." (Billy Connolly)

The poignant "Streets of London" contrasts their haves and have-nots (20th Century-Fox 2178), but is just as significant for any large city. Unfortunately, very few Americans ever heard it.

"Whispering Grass (Don't Tell the Trees)" is an Ink Spots classic, a Top 10 hit in 1940. Davies and Estelle, of the sitcom, "It Ain't Half Hot Mum," stay surprisingly faithful to the original.

Showaddywaddy is an oldies band, similar to Sha Na Na. "Three Steps to Heaven" revives Eddie Cochran's 1960 hit.

Recorded live, Billy Connolly's hilarious parody of Tammy Wynette's "D-i-v-o-r-c-e" (1968) rounds out the coverage.

None of the above three were issued in the States.



IZ ZAT SO? Here's a quirky occurrence I spotted on the British charts:

For the first three weeks of December 1959, No. 1 is "What Do You Want," by Adam Faith.

For the next five weeks, Faith gives way to Emile Ford's "What Do You Want to Make Those Eyes at Me For."

One way or the other, they were the Top 2 in seven of those eight weeks.

If there is another time when the same first four words appeared in the titles of two consecutive, yet completely different, No. 1 songs, I can't think of it.

JIMMY PAGE Remastering LED ZEPPELIN Catalog 

Peter Mensch, the manager of LED ZEPPELIN guitarist Jimmy Page, told the U.K.'s Sunday Times that the legendary axeman is holed up in a west London studio "remastering every LED ZEPPELIN LP." It is believed that the new remasters, which are tentatively due next year, will possibly include alternate takes and unreleased material as well.

Al Green is an icon of soul vocalists. Like Jackie Wilson, James Brown and Sam Cooke, he was able to incorporate gospel and r&b into accessible music. His warm vocals and horn accompaniment became one of the calling cards for the seventies “Memphis Sound”. The collaboration with producer/engineer Willie Mitchell created unforgettable albums including Green Is Blues, Al Green gets Next To You and Let’s Stay Together. The latter’s title track became a trademark for Green and remains one of the greatest soul numbers of all time.

He became Reverend Al Green (of Full Gospel Tabernacle) in 1976 and devoted over a decade to gospel music. In 1988, he recorded a duet of “Put A Little Love In Your Heart” with Annie Lennox that was used in the movie Scrooged. This signaled a limited return to popular music. However, his passion still resides in his role as church pastor. Among his many accolades, Al Green was inducted into The Songwriter’s Hall Of Fame (2004), and The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame (2005).

Pure Pleasure Records has re-mastered Al Green Explores Your Mind to 180-gram vinyl, and the reissue is brilliant. Nine original compositions highlight the songwriting and vibrant performance of a quintessential r&b legend. It is evident from the opening notes of “Sha-La-La (Makes Me Happy)” that the record was engineered to frame the Memphis-style arrangements around the silky, upper-register vocals of Green. As the strings (Memphis String Section) and horns are joined with lush backup vocals (Rhodes, Chalmers and Rhodes), a simple love song becomes soul artistry. Green is able to slip into falsetto with complete ease. It is a curiosity that “Take Me To The River” was never a huge success (although it did jump-start Talking Heads’ career). This version has a Delta-swamp vibe with warm, funky hooks and grooves, without doubt the definitive version.

While Green was still a practitioner of secular music, there is gospel nuance in a lot of the arrangements. In the case of “God Bless Our Love” a slower, laid back, Sunday feel is illuminated by this vocalist and his backup singers. Also, a detectable shade of ‘50s rock can be felt here, as well as the melancholic “School Days”. But the energy is at its finest on joyful soul numbers like “One Nite Stand” and “I’m Hooked On You”. Green is an excellent songwriter and combines with producer, Willie Mitchell to create accessible, rhythmic songs. His topical narrative appears on “The City”, which has a funky guitar chord presence that defines seventies r&b (not unlike Curtis Mayfield).

Pure Pleasure has done a masterful job in re-mastering this session to audiophile vinyl. Green’s smooth tones have a rich texture, even in falsetto. The strings and horn volume levels are just right, never becoming too dense. At less than thirty minutes, the album flows with grace and precision. Al Green Explores Your Mind is soulful bliss!

DEAR JERRY: An all-music Internet radio station has infected me with an earworm. Great as talk-free radio is, it would be a big help if they provided a playlist. Some do, but not all.

I heard a song only once, loved it and want to buy it. But I hope you can identify it for me.

By a female singer, the story is about a bum and a bunch of monkeys on a bus. It has an old-time feel to it.

The most repeated phrase, directed to an annoying passenger, is "keep your baggage on your own side." Might that be the title?

DEAR VERONICA: No, but that line, with "packages" rather than baggage, is heard three times during this charming little track, and one might think it's the title.

By Del Rey (guitar) and Suzy Thompson (fiddle), your mystery tune is "Bus Song," one of the highlights from their 2010 album, "Hen Party."

One amusing "Bus Song" verse has the lout explaining to the driver that he shouldn't have to pay the fare because the route takes the bus right by his house anyway.



DEAR JERRY: Apparently, no mention was made in the media about the death (Sept. 5) of Jackie Starke, but your readers should be interested in her passing.

It is Starke, along with Dee Dee Sharpe (nee: Dione LaRue), singing those sweet yeah-yeahs and whoa-whoas on many of Bobby Rydell's Cameo hits. Among those are "Wild One"; "Sway"; "Swingin' School"; "We Got Love"; and "Volare."

It was also in those days that my band, LeRoy & His Rockin' Fellers, recorded for Cameo. Last year, you were kind enough to write about our first single, "River Nile" (Cameo 194).

Several years ago, while entertaining the folks at the ManorCare Nursing Home in West Reading, Pa., I discovered Jackie was living there, after having numerous strokes.

I returned a few times just to visit with her, always with my guitar and singing some Bobby Rydell songs. Then I'd jokingly say "Sounds just like Bobby," to which she invariably replied, "Nooooooo!"

Jackie died at ManorCare, at the age of 73.

DEAR JERRY: Our local oldies station played Fats Domino's "Blueberry Hill," then said it was one of the Top 20 Songs of the 20th Century, according to the Record Industry Association of America.

So what are the other 19?

While I admit "Blueberry Hill" is an essential oldie, how could it possibly rank alongside such mega-hits as "Rock Around the Clock"; "Yesterday"; and "Don't Be Cruel"?

DEAR VINNIE: If "Blueberry Hill" seems miscast in this category, then get ready to question up to half of the Top 20.

Also, of the three you mentioned, only "Rock Around the Clock" made their list.

The selections overall seem to indicate an average age of voters to be, shall we say, beyond even the baby boomer generation.



IZ ZAT SO? For a much different perspective, let's look at BMI's Top 20 Most Played Songs of the Century. All but one of these tunes, "Georgia on My Mind" (1941), were born in 1960 or later:

Mute and Spoon are delighted to announce that, due to phenomenal demand, Can’s The Lost Tapes will be released as a 5 LP box set on 180g vinyl on December 4th, 2012.

The Lost Tapes was curated by Irmin Schmidt and Daniel Miller, compiled by Irmin Schmidt and Jono Podmore and edited by Jono Podmore. The vinyl issue of The Lost Tapes will come with a 24” square poster and a 28 page booklet with sleeve notes by Irmin Schmidt and Ian Harrison.

 ‘Lost Tapes’ were discovered when the legendary Can studio in Weilerswist was sold to the German Rock N Pop Museum. The new owners sentimentally preserved everything, including the army mattresses that covered the walls for sound protection, and relocated it to Gronau.

Whilst dismantling the studio, master tapes were found and stored in the Spoon archive. With barely legible labeling, no one was sure what was on these until Irmin Schmidt and long time collaborator Jono Podmore started to go through over fifty hours of music.

What they found was years of archived material--not outtakes, but rather tracks which had been shelved for a variety of reasons – soundtracks to films that were never released and tracks that didn’t make it onto the final versions of albums due to space.

Irmin Schmidt explains “Obviously the tapes weren't really lost, but were left in the cupboards of the studio archives for so long everybody just forgot about them. Everybody except Hildegard, who watches over Can and its work like the dragon over the gold of the Nibelungen and doesn't allow forgetting.”

The final cut of tracks, dating from 1968-1977, features studio material recorded at Schloss Nörvenich and Can Studio, Weilerswist with the Can line up of Holger Czukay on bass, Michael Karoli on guitars, Jaki Liebezeit on drums and Irmin Schmidt on keyboards, and on most tracks, vocals from Malcolm Mooney or Damo Suzuki.

Can was formed by ex-student of Stockhausen Irmin Schmidt, who, fired by the sounds of Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa abandoned his career in classic music to form a group which could utilise and transcend all boundaries of ethnic, electronic experimental and modern classical music.

Can’s influence is well known and far-reaching and the impact they made on music is felt today as keenly as it ever has been. They themselves have always been impossible to classify and reflecting this, the scope of artists who in recent years have cited Can as a major influence is varied from John Lydon to Radiohead, The Fall to Portishead.
