James Taylor - JT

Recorded in 1977, James Taylor's first album for Columbia Records made a huge impact on the hit charts. The album itself peaked at number 4 of the Billboard 200, and the singles "Handy Man" and "Your Smiling Face" hit high on the charts as well.

JT meant a new direction for the Folk Pop singer, as he shows a newly found positive approach to his songwriting material. Gone were his 'rainy day man' sensitive croons, in comes this mainstream, sunny easy listening vibe. Taylor mixes his patented acoustic guitar-based Folk sound with elements of Rock, Blues and Country to great effect.

Just like the original European pressings, the album is packed in a gatefold sleeve and contains a lyric sheet. 180 gram audiophile vinyl

Byrds - Ballad Of Easy Rider

Having assembled a new line-up, Byrds front man Roger McQuinn hit the bull's eye with Ballad Of Easy Rider in 1969. Except for the title track, the album actually has little in common with the Hippie
movement-defining movie Easy Rider. However, the album profited from its association with the highly successful movie. 

Other great tracks are "Jesus Is Just Alright", the funky "Fido" and "Oil In My Lamp".  Regarded by many as one of the last great albums from the Byrds (which includes the equally fine Untitled Unissued  from 1970), Ballad Of Easy Rider is simply a must have for Byrds and Classic Rock fans alike. 180 gram audiophile vinyl

America - Homecoming

Just when America received a Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1973, they released their second album Homecoming to great critical and popular acclaim. The single "Ventura Highway" preceded the album and hit a Top Ten status. The album followed suit and stormed the Billboard Top Ten. Polishing their sound, they built further on the Folk Pop formula they invented on their debut America a year earlier.

Dewey Bunnell, Dan Peek and Gerry Beckley delivered a compelling and top quality set of songs, by many regarded as their best work. 180 gram audiophile vinyl

Otis Redding - Pain In My Heart

At just 22 years of age, Otis Redding showed incredible maturity in his distinctive gravelly voice that became the vocal benchmark of Soul music. His very first album Pain In My Heart (1964) contained his first hit from 1962, "These Arms Of Mine". His versatility shows in the diverse selection of material, like "The Dog" by Rufus Thomas, "Stand By Me" by Ben E. King, "You Send Me" by Sam Cooke and "Lucille" by Little Richard.

Backing him up are the rhythm section from Stax house band Booker T. & The MG's and the horn players from The Mar-Keys. The album promised a wonderful career of Redding, which unfortunately would only last a mere 3 years after the release of Pain In My Heart. 180 gram audiophile vinyl

Grim Reaper - See You In Hell

The debut album from New Wave of British Heavy Metal stalwarts Grim Reaper was originally released in Europe in 1983, with the rest of the world following a year later. Despite being a perfect example of Heavy Metal clichés, See You In Hell sold around a quarter of a million copies, reaching #73 on the US Billboard Top 200.

Naturally, a band wearing leather and album artwork depicting 'satanic' imagery also received what is nowadays laughable allegations of demon-worship.  Sadly, we can assure you there are no hidden messages in this album if you play it backwards… For fans of NWOBHM, Motorhead, Saxon & Judas Priest.  180 gram audiophile vinyl

Billy Joel - Turnstiles

His fourth album Turnstiles (1976) marked Billy Joel's return to his hometown of New York, after his  previous two albums Piano Man [MOVLP521] and Streetlife Serenade [MOVLP412] were recorded in glitzy Los Angeles. Listening to Turnstiles it is clear that Joel felt right at home in the Big Apple (with "New York State Of Mind") whilst closing the chapter on his California days ("Say Goodbye To Hollywood").

Beatles Super Rare Album Cover Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Up For Auction

A cover shoot in which the faces of 40 Capitol Record executives are featured and produced for a record company party, is on the auction block at Heritage Auctions.

It's believed only 40-50 copies were ever produced and the UK's Record Collector magazine ranked it #1 on a list of the world's most expensive record covers. The 1967 cover is expected to bring $15,000+.

"Beatles Ultra Rare Album Cover Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Capitol SMAS 2653, 1967). Most collectors think of the censored "butcher cover" when the topic of rare Beatles album covers comes up. But this super-rare version featuring 40 Capitol Records executives' faces rather than the original collage of celebrities is much more scarce - it's believed only 40-50 copies were ever produced! They were distributed at a Capitol party, essentially one for each of the executives pictured! In a special poll conducted for the December, 2011 issue of the UK's Record Collector this cover was ranked #1 on a list of the world's most expensive record covers, valued at approximately £70,000 or more than $100,000. Noted Beatles expert Perry Cox describes it as "among the rarest and most interesting artifacts produced during the original era of the Beatles."

"The custom cover came out in late 1967 after the initial pressings earlier that year, and bears the "All Rights Reserved ..." print at the the bottom right back cover and "NEMS Ent ..." at the lower right back cover. "With a Little Help From My Friends" is printed correctly on the record, another marker of the later 1967 pressing."

Harrowing 'Rosemary's Baby' Score to Get Vinyl Reissue

"We are thrilled to announce our upcoming release of the score to the 1968 horror classic, Rosemary’s Baby, starring Mia Farrow and directed by Roman Polanski.  This special vinyl release features the original chilling score by composer Krzysztof Komeda (April 27, 1931 – April 23, 1969).   The LP package includes the original film score restored, mixed, and re-mastered directly from the original source master tapes.   This definitive version of the film score has never before been released on vinyl.   Audio mastering for vinyl will be undertaken by former White Zombie guitarist, J. Yuenger.   The LP package will include 180 gram vinyl housed in a printed inner sleeve, placed in a matte varnish heavyweight jacket with spot UV gloss finish.  Full album art will be created by Jay Shaw (Ironjaiden)."

A release date hasn't been announced yet, but i'll let you know when!

Tunnels - The Blackout

Tunnels is the solo moniker of Nicholas Bindeman from psychedelic wu¨nderband, Eternal Tapestry. The Blackout was originally released in the summer of 2011 and sold out almost immediately. We are  quite pleased to bring back The Blackout on limited white vinyl with download code.

FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 22, 2013

DEAR JERRY: In the early 1960s, in Long Beach, Calif., there was a Wal-Mart type store named Dooley's Hardware, that carried a little bit of everything. The draw for me was they sold brand new 45s for just 25-cents each.

They were so cheap because they were not current hits (those were 89-cents), but leftover ones from past years. Some were familiar oldies and some were totally unknown.

One in the latter category is a two-sided novelty, but not a break-in. All of the music used is original.

Among the characters I recall are Sherlock Holmes, Paladin, Dracula, and a monster. My searches using these common keywords turn up countless results, none of which help.

DEAR DON: Stores such as Dooley's were a great source for crisp new records on original labels, at a price that made taking a chance on an unknown tune a low risk adventure.

Obviously you no longer have this single, but here's everything you need to know to replace it.

The artist credit reads Buchanan and Ancell - Cast of Thousands, and the A-side title is "String Along with Pal-O-Mine."

Most if not all of that cast of thousands are voiced by Bill Buchanan and Bob Ancell.

Buchanan, previously with Dickie Goodman, sold over a million novelty break-ins in the '50s, thanks to their zany "Flying Saucer" series.

Cella (Ancell), teamed with Buchanan in 1957 for another charted break-in, "The Creature (From a Science Fiction Movie)." In a drastic departure from that format, "String Along with Pal-O-Mine" is a three-act comedy.

It is doubtful Bill and Bob's creation ever made it to the airwaves in 1959. Clocking in at over eight minutes was a longer running time than Top 40 stations would consider playing, no matter how entertaining it might be.

In this case, editing was not a sensible option. Clipping any part of the program would do more harm than good.

So why would ABC-Paramount invest so heavily to produce a record that had virtually no chance of being played?

Perhaps they were influenced by the recent success (December 1958) of Stan Freberg's "Green Christmas," which runs nearly seven minutes.

Maybe they felt broadcasters were ready to program other longer singles, which we now know they were not. Eventually, though, radio came around as we know from two tunes in 1968: Richard Harris' "MacArthur Park" (7:20) and the Beatles' "Hey Jude" (7:11). Despite their length, both were monster hits.

Speaking of monsters …

Side 1 is "String Along with Pal-O-Mine" (Act 1), the flip has "More String Along with Pal-O-Mine" (Act 2), and "Still More String Along with Pal-O-Mine" (Act 3).

Pal-O-Mine is a parody of TV's Paladin, played by Richard Boone in "Have Gun, Will Travel," one of the three most popular shows in the late '50s. The other two are also westerns: "Gunsmoke" and "Wagon Train."

The Transylvania townspeople called for Pal-O-Mine because "that crazy monster is on the loose again." Joining him on the case are Sherlock Homely, his assistant, Dr. Witless, and Igor Bentneck, the monster's best friend.

Since I'm sworn not to reveal the ending, there's no need here for a spoiler alert.

Finding this record (ABC-Paramount 10,003) online one day is likely, though I can't find a single one for sale at this time.

One is bound to be on the market soon, though not at Dooley's for a quarter. Now you can expect to spend $10 to $20 if you want to string along with Pal-O-Mine.


DEAR JERRY: Since I bought his first record, Jack Scott has been one of my favorite singers.

On some of those early records, Jack sang with a backup group, but I can't remember their name.

Do you know who they are?

DEAR JON: As a fan of Jack's, you probably know he is a Canadian, whose hometown is Windsor, Ontario.

There in early 1958 he hooked up with the Chantones, a Windsor quartet fresh off their own smash hit, "Anne Marie" (Sparton 491).

The Chantones — Jack Grenier (lead); Larry Desjarlais (tenor); Jim Nantais (baritone); and Roy Lesperance (bass) — back Jack Scott on most of his hits, though are not always credited on the labels.

Here are some of his well-known songs on which the Chantones are heard:

"My True Love"; "With Your Love"; "Geraldine"; "Goodbye Baby"; "Save My Soul"; "I Never Felt Like This"; "The Way I Walk"; "What in the World's Come Over You"; "Burning Bridges"; and "It Only Happened Yesterday."

Of course they also appear on Jack's albums, but are most prominently credited on "The Spirit Moves Me" by "Jack Scott and the Fabulous Chantones (Top Rank 348/648).



IZ ZAT SO? As Jack Scott moved from one label to another, the Chantones not only continued working on his sessions, but their own label affiliation usually kept pace with Scott's.

In 1958, while Jack was with Carlton, the company issued the Chantones' "It's Just a Summer Love" (Carlton 485).

The Chantones' "Don't Open That Door" (Top Rank 2066) came out in 1960, while Jack was selling millions of records for Top Rank.

In 1961, Scott signed with Capitol, and so did the Chantones. The Capitol studio is where the quartet recorded perhaps their best tune, a doo-wop flavored rendering of "Stormy Weather" (Capitol 4661)

American Sharks Announce Debut Album


New York, NY (July 23, 2013) - Stoner metal fuzz, plus punk rock speed and simplicity. American Sharks have created this sound, to amazing effect, on their self-titled debut album out September 17th on The End Records.

The band will be embarking on two US tours this summer. The first will be with The Sword and Castle which will run from July 25th to August 23rd. Followed up by their fall tour with The Sword and Clutch running form October 27th to November 23rd.

The album begins with guitarist Will Ellis’ simple two-note drone that’s been caked with fuzzy effects so the lead-off track “Iron Lungs” hits with maximum force. He’s soon joined by Mike Hardin’s bass and tortured, bellowing vocals and Nick Cornetti’s chugging drum beat on the song that bows out in one minute thirty four seconds, practically over before it started.

That’s sort of the ethos for this trio that originally formed in Houston and has managed to make the most of its stints opening for Austin metal heroes and “big brother” band The Sword. One big difference between the two, though, is that American Sharks shows – while similarly heavy on riffage and instrumental chaos – are Ramones-like in their consistent brevity and mark their mark with unrelenting speed and power.

“It comes from a kind of pop sensibility that I think has been lost, in that people forget you don’t have to drag a song out to make it memorable,” Hardin said. “That’s why our longest set ever is 30 minutes and we’ve always wanted to play 15 to 20 minute shows. When we first started things got pretty crazy because people didn’t know how to react to it and they’d show up and start throwing beer everywhere.”

Similarly, the new American Sharks record features nine track and clocks in just a few ticks more than 20 minutes, making it a perfect soundtrack for a morning commute as long as the listener can resist the urge to put the pedal to the floor during “Overdrive.”

Recorded quickly in four days at Austin’s Fifth Street Studios by Bryan Richie, the album’s sound and pace was obvious almost from the start with first takes on Cornetti’s drum tracks serving as the bedrock for the band’s sound.

“When we started doing takes we’d do one and Bryan would say ‘That’s great. That’s a keeper,’ but we’d do a couple more and when I listened back those first takes were always the ones that had the energy,” Cornetti said. “The more you do something the more you think about it, so most of the songs on the record are first takes.”

Cornetti echoed Hardin in talking about the band’s determination to avoid overzealous guitar work or epic-length songwriting while channeling the best bits of metal legends like Black Sabbath and Motorhead.

“We like going out and not doing crazy weird things that go on for eight minutes,” he said. “There’s no unnecessary solos and our thinking is, ‘Let’s find a way to simplify it and make it faster.’”

A key to the record’s impact is the expert mixing job of Jason Buntz, who figured out how to capture the band’s power and mind-altering brute force while keeping the songs lean and sonically agile. While the band’s early “Weedwizard” single came close to capturing its power and economy, Buntz has helped them take a massive leap forward.

Take a listen to the “Demon With Glass Sword,” which rides a Sabbath-worthy riff as fast as it will go, balancing the needed heft with a blazing rhythm that doesn’t need any more than the two minutes and change it takes to leave a listener dazed and enthused. That combination is what prompts repeated listens, and what the band hopes will be the key to large success as its music is distributed to a worldwide audience thanks to a deal with The End Records.  “Being on a label like that elevates us to a place where we can get worldwide distribution and we know someone is really going to be pushing to get the record into people’s hands,” Hardin said.

MONDO ANNOUNCES A COMPILATION FROM FIVE STUDIO GHIBLI FILMS ON LIMITED EDITION VINYL

Austin, TX  - Mondo is thrilled to announce the limited edition vinyl release of a compilation of selections from five different Studio Ghibli films, featuring performances from the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.  Studio Ghibli Kokyo Kyokushu will include selections from PRINCESS MONONOKE, SPIRITED AWAY, HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE, THE CAT RETURNS, & MY NEIGHBORS THE YAMADAS.  This collaboration was an especially exciting project for Mondo to be able to release this album for the first time ever on vinyl.  Studio Ghibli Kokyo Kyokushu will be available for purchase on July 26 at mondotees.com.

There will be three different collectible versions of this album, each featuring a different piece of artwork from renowned Mondo artist, Tyler Stout, capturing elements from all five films across the Gatefold 2XLP packaging. One version, showcasing HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE, a with traditional Japanese Obi and all Japanese text, will premiere at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con. Each album will also include two different colored vinyl as followed:

Windhand: Announce New Album 'Soma' - Out September 17 on Relapse Records

Richmond, Virginia’s psychedelic doom band, Windhand, are set to release their second full-length album Soma via Relapse Records on September 17 (Pre-order here). 

After surging the DIY circuit with months of touring, their own IPA, a critically acclaimed self-titled release last year and a split with label-mates Cough this year, Windhand have confirmed they’ll be taking the main stage at next year’s Roadburn Festival in Tilburg, The Netherlands on Saturday, April 12. Soma is nothing short of transcendent. This record is for more than just doom-metal fanatics—this is an epic record for all fans of guitar driven rock and roll.

On Soma, Windhand successfully make syrupy slow, downtuned doom hooky and anthemic. Propelled by singer Dorthia Cottrell’s beautifully haunting bellow, Windhand’s dual guitar attack sounds like the glorious misfit offspring of Black Sabbath and Nirvana. An easy candidate for heavy music record of the year. The album was recorded and mixed by the band’s own Garrett Morris at The Darkroom and mastered by James Plotkin in their hometown. Described by Sweden's national tabloid Expressen as "a perfect union of Front 242 and the B-52's," electronic punk group Cat Rapes Dog is back with their first album since 1999. The new album, dubbed Life Was Sweet, is the seventh Cat Rapes Dog studio release and first on label Artoffact. The band gets right to the point and stays true to their punk rock roots, rarely pausing and skipping all filler. The album clocks in at a "fits on vinyl" 35 minutes, but in this short space Cat Rapes Dog will tell you to go out and vote, give you a lesson in religion, and baffle you with a sense of humour all their own. Manic electronic synth lines meet over-the-top male and female vocals on nine tracks of pure DIY weird.

‘From Beer to Eternity’ is the 13th album of the US Industrial-legends! Their previous studio album ‘Relapse’ entered the charts all around the world. The new album will be released in 5 formats: standard CD, Digipak (+2 bonus tracks), 2 different Gatefold 2LPs (+ 1 bonus-track) & limited Fanbox! The Gatefold 2LPs (black & clear) will be limited to 500 units each, while the Fanbox is limited to 1000 worldwide and comes as a mini coffin including: the digipak, a rosary, prayer cards, prayer candle (with Ministry branding).

The CD was written last December (2012) prior to the death of the band's guitarist, Mike Scaccia. "This was one of the most creative MINISTRY tracking sessions ever. The band was on fire! We were having fun, we were coming up with great ideas and experimenting with everything we've ever wanted to do, from STONES-y blues to dub and, of course, heavy guitar-based rock. It was too easy. No fighting, no problems. Nothing goes that well without the floor eventually falling out." - MINISTRY mainman Al Jourgensen says. "It was the most emotionally difficult project I've ever done, but it was the most rewarding," Jourgensen continues. "Mikey was amazed with the songs when he was working on them, and I know he's looking down at us now and he's totally stoked with what we came up with."

When you count out the original Blues men from the United States, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band is arguably the finest example of raw Blues essence. With white harmonica player Butterfield at the center, the racially integrated group started as one of the first authentic and genuine Blues combos.
