i found this story to be interesting, it seems that album cover art would a bit out of finster's calling, however, read on, he did some very famous covers:

Work of visionary artist Howard Finster comes to MOCA Jacksonville

Without formal training, the reverend found medium for message

By Charlie Patton

According to the biography posted on his official website, the late Howard Finster was 3 when he had his first vision, the sight of his sister Abby descending from the clouds.

At the age of 15, Finster, born in 1916, responded to another vision by leaving his boyhood home in Alabama to become an itinerant preacher.

But it wasn't until Finster was almost 60 that he received the vision that would change his life and make him one of the most popular and celebrated artists of his time.

lovely narrative about a vinyl celebration at triple play records  in Grand Junction, Colorado

Record Store Day brought record amount of fun for some

By Rock Cesario

Record Store Day 2011 was without a doubt the most fun day my son Matthew and I have ever had at Triple Play Records in the 22 plus years we have been doing business in Grand Junction.

We witnessed the power of vinyl firsthand as most of the day’s receipts were from the sale of vinyl records and fairly evenly balanced between used vinyl and the new records that were Record Store Day exclusives.

We did not sell all of our special Record Store Day issues and we did not expect we would. In fact it is nice to have some of them left over for folks who weren’t able to make it in on Saturday, April 16.

What was most rewarding for Matthew and me was the fact that we were able to make sure everyone who came into Triple Play Records that day went home with some free music, whether they made a purchase or not.

We weren’t sure we would be able to do that but thanks to all of the free swag we were sent because of our “official” registration for the event, we pulled it off.

I Left The Planet Project From Fleurety's Alexander Nordgaren To See Vinyl Release

Fleurety guitarist Alexander Nordgaren recorded an album under the band named I Left the Planet in 1996, but it was never released. Now, Neuropa Records has announced the project will officially see a vinyl version of the effort. The label commented on the upcoming release:

"One from the vaults, this unique piece of avant-garde metal history, never before leaked or released, features some of the authorities of the genre including members from Fleurety and Ved Buens Ende.

"Recorded on analogue 16-track tape in March 1996, I Left the Planet is a one-off project featuring members from Fleurety, Ved Buens Ende and Virus; all bands hailed as originators of the style that has lately come to be known as avant-garde metal. Lyrics and voice are courtesy of acclaimed Norwegian author and novelist Bjørn Esben Almaas, overlaying three separate pieces of music written by Alexander Nordgaren, also handling guitars on the recording. Combined with Ayna Beate Johansen’s distinctive voice, Czral’s legendary drums and percussion style, Per Amund Solberg’s contrapuntal bass melodies and Mari Solberg’s jazzy saxophones the result is different from any other band of the era; Dark Poetry. Dark Metal. Dark Jazz.

"The recording plays across and between Adversum’s label profile key words; disharmony, imagination, individualism, courage, entertainment and darkness, and is its first release on vinyl. I Left the Planet is limited to 274 copies. The cover and vinyl artwork has been made by Trine+Kim Design Studio. The record is pressed on heavy duty black 12” vinyl featuring music on side A and etched art on side B."

great story from north of the border, not exactly about vinyl, but a new generation is enjoying dance music and that can't be all bad:

Dance music's explosion

By Mike Devlin Postmedia News

Illegal downloading hasn't affected dance music in nearly the same way it has other genres. If anything, it has helped.

According to Tijs Michiel Verwest, who is known as Tiesto to millions of electronic dance music devotees, filesharing via peer-to-peer sources has had a big effect on dance music, reaching unprecedented heights in recent years.

"The whole reason why dance music has been blowing up is because of sharing online," he said from a recent tour stop in Charlotte, N.C. "Back in the days when you had vinyl, even if you really wanted a track, you couldn't buy it if it was sold out.

"I think it's better. It's not about the money anymore, and the control is gone. It's like the Wild West out there. Ten years ago, the radio and the [record] labels dictated what we had to listen to. Now, you can just go online for a day and find all kinds of stuff."

CD sales fund research

Month of April Parkinson Disease Awareness month

By Marianne Gillespie
Chillicothe Times-Bulletin

Chillicothe, Ill. — Joan Snyder of Rome refuses to be silenced by Parkinson’s disease, and she finds new avenues to raise money for research.

On March 18 she hosted a gala event showcasing her newest endeavor — a collection of music on CD, “Voices from the Dreams We Share: Songs of Hope & Courage” — timed with thoughts of April as National Parkinson’s Awareness Month.

Amid Snyder’s favorite colors of navy blue and gold, those attending the release party at the Cornerstone Building in Peoria ate food supplied by Butcher Block, Avanti’s, Chillicothe Subway, Spotted Cow, Betty Sue’s in Henry, Trefzger’s, Rhythm Kitchen and more.

Music was, of course, the theme, including Leveetown, a band that regularly plays at Riverbeach Pub in Rome, as well as many of the musicians on the CD.

Many of those who contributed songs to the CD either have Parkinson’s disease or have loved ones diagnosed with the disease or are friends of Snyder.

great indepth story about one of my favorites from back in the day, check it out:

Vee, hit-making team recall sessions

Written by Adam Hammer

ST. JOSEPH — Serial hit maker and ’60s teen idol Bobby Vee is preserving his rock ‘n’ roll legacy with an unprecedented collection of rare and unreleased tracks from the EMI/Capitol Records vaults.

“We did so much recording back then — there were some years where I was recording four albums a year — so there were some things that were left in the dust,” Vee recalled while listening to a handful of remastered songs in the production booth of his Rockhouse Productions studio. “It wasn’t because they weren’t good, but we were just moved on to other things and you always think you’re working on the next best thing.”

For Vee, the two-disc, 60-plus song collection fills a musical gap in previous releases, which include 38 top-100 hits and six gold records.

nice write up in the guardian.co.uk:

Analogue artists defying the digital age

Dusty vinyl records, vintage film cameras, rickety typewriters and antiquated recording equipment … these are the creative tools being used by some emerging artists. Pure nostalgia? Or a laudable refusal to escape the speed and sanitised perfection of contemporary digital culture?

Sean O'Hagan

With indecent haste, the digital revolution has consigned many of our once-cherished artefacts to the dustbin of history. Though enthusiasts and obsessives have stayed loyal to pre-digital formats, for the rest of us it feels like the vinyl record, the photographic print, the Polaroid camera, the analogue recording studio and the darkroom have been cast aside, rendered all but obsolete by a digitally driven culture that devours all that preceded it. Soon, we are told, the newspaper and the book may share the same fate.

The young artists featured here – a poet who composes on a typewriter, a musician who has built an entirely analogue recording studio, a photographer who shuns digital for manual vintage cameras and an artist who DJs on a gramophone – are all, in their different ways, reacting to digital culture's fast-forward momentum. Are they driven by nostalgia for a past they did not live though and in retreat from a present that makes them uneasy as it makes everything easier?

a new record store!

Record store puts new spin on Dover music scene

By AIMEE LOCKHARDT Special to the Democrat

DOVER — For a city so dedicated to music, Mark Matarozzo was surprised to find that aside from the odd CD or vinyl on the shelves at bookstores or instrument stores, there was no store wholly dedicated to selling record albums.

And so SPUN Records and More was born.

The store, located at 266 Central Ave., opened its doors Saturday in celebration of Record Store Day. The store specializes in vintage records, CDs, cassettes, concert shirts and music memorabilia.

Owner Matarozzo said since he was a teenager he has always wanted to own a music store. An avid music lover, Matarozzo said he is nearing his 600th concert, having gone since he was 12 years old.

vinyl survives nuclear event:

A vinyl souvenir from a visit to ‘death incarnate’

TOM HAWTHORN

Nic Hume reaches for a vinyl record, slips it from a cardboard envelope, eases it onto a turntable.

The scratchy sound of piano music fills his apartment.

The Cyrillic label indicates this melodiya was issued by the Soviet Union’s cultural ministry. The side we are listening to features Concerto No. 2 by the Ukrainian composer Levko Revutsky.

The last people to listen to this record had been sitting in a Grade 6 classroom in an elementary school in a village along a river.

For more than two decades, the long-playing record remained in a building abandoned in a panic. By the time Mr. Hume came across it, scavengers had long since pillaged the school of wire and metal, leaving behind yellowing books and broken chairs and dusty records. He brought this LP home to Victoria, a reminder of those who once lived in what is now a ghost town.

DAVE GROHL Talks Playing 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' Again

According to The Pulse Of Radio, FOO FIGHTERS frontman Dave Grohl revealed in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly that he and former NIRVANA members Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear played the NIRVANA classic "Smells Like Teen Spirit" together for the first time in nearly two decades while the FOO FIGHTERS were recording their new album, "Wasting Light". Grohl explained, "The day we finished the record, we had this club gig to do. It was in this little bar down the street, a surprise show. I invited Krist to come down and play a song. We wanted to play 'Marigold', which was the B-side of the 'Heart-Shaped Box' single, and it was the only NIRVANA song I sang."

and in music history for today:

In 1955, a United Nations commission issued a report stating there was “a definite connection between increased marijuana smoking and that form of entertainment known as bebob and rebop.”

In 1960 Elvis Presley's first release since leaving the US Army, "Stuck On You" tops the Billboard chart. The record had been so highly anticipated, it sold over one million copies before it was even recorded.

With the Folk music craze in full swing in 1960, the Brothers Four enjoyed their biggest hit as "Greenfields" reached #2 on the Billboard chart.

In 1964, Peter and Gordon reach #1 on the UK Pop chart with "A World without Love", a song given to them by Paul McCartney because he didn't think it was good enough for The Beatles to record (it wasn't). The song would also top the Cashbox Best Sellers list and the Billboard Hot 100 in June.

In 1967, the Beatles recorded "All You Need Is Love" during a British TV broadcast. Marianne Faithfull sang in the chorus.

In 1968, the Beatles refused to perform for the Queen of England at a British Olympic Appeal Fund show because "Our decision would be the same no matter what the cause. We don't do benefits."

The Jackson Five started a two-week run at # 1 on the Billboard singles chart in 1970 with “ABC,” the group’s second U.S. # 1 and a #8 hit in the U.K.

In 1977, Elvis Presley made his last recording during a concert at the Saginaw Civic Center, Michigan. Three songs from the show appeared on the posthumously released Presley album, Moody Blue.

The film "Rock & Roll High School" starring the Ramones premiered in 1979.

Also in 1979, the Police made their debut on BBC TV’s Top of the Pops, performing “Roxanne.”

Wings broke up in 1984

In 1990, the guitar that Jimi Hendrix played at the Woodstock festival was auctioned off for a record $295,000.

In 1994, the Eagles played the first of two shows where they recorded their "Hell Freezes Over" album. Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh, Don Felder and Timothy B. Schmit first got back together the previous December for the making of a Travis Tritt video of their song, "Take It Easy", that was included on an Eagles tribute CD. The video from Hell Freezes Over was later released in CD and DVD form and includes an excellent acoustic rendition of "Hotel California", as well as live versions of most of their hit songs. The name of the album was taken from an earlier quote by Glen Frey, who responded to the question "When will the Eagles get back together?" (the money didn't hurt the cause....)

In 2007, aides to President George Bush were told they couldn’t book a five-star hotel suite at the Imperial Hotel in Vienna, Austria because Mick Jagger had already booked it, splashing out £3,600 a night for the luxury suite, in advance of The Rolling Stones’ current world tour.

In 2007, Bobby “Boris” Pickett died at the age of 69 due to complications from leukemia. Pickett’s “Monster Mash” was a #1 hit in 1962 and re-entered the charts in 1973, when it hit #3 in the U.K. and #10 in the U.S.

the immortal Ella Fitzgerald was born in 1917. celebrating birthdays today include Bjorn Ulvaeus from ABBA (1945), Stu Cook of Creedence Clearwater Revival fame (1945) and Michael Brown from The Left Banke (1949), among others.
