Muse Reveal Album Cover Art For New Release

Muse have recently revealed the album cover art for their new release (the band's sixth studio album) called 'The 2nd Law.'   The image is a photograph of the human brain taken from the Human Connectome Project, a project set up to highlight the pathways of the brain by illustrating them with different luminous colors.

The band have promised that it will be 'very diverse' with Matt Bellamy also adding: "We've tried a bunch of new things, which the trailer gives a glimpse of. There's only one song that's like that. We've basically tried to do what Rage Against The Machine did with hip-hop in the 1990s and take a bit of the electronic world and dubstep and play it with real instruments. There's only one track like that, the rest of it is very, very diverse."

LAND OBSERVATIONS ~ DEBUT ALBUM - ROMAN ROADS IV – XI

RELEASE DATE:  SEPTEMBER 4th, 2012

Mute are pleased to announce the signing of Land Observations, and news of the debut release, Roman Roads IV - XI, out on September 4th, 2012.

Land Observations is the solo project of James Brooks, which debuted at the Short Circuit, presents Mute Festival at the Roundhouse in May 2011.

Brooks’ previous band, Appliance, released four critically acclaimed albums on Mute before disbanding. Since then, Brooks has developed his visual and audio art with various shows across the UK, North America and Europe (his current exhibition, The Information Exchange, is at Domobaal, London, WC1 until August 2012).

Throughout, music has remained a constant, with Brooks now connecting his conceptual approaches to instrumental musical compositions.

Attempts to develop a new project alongside the visual art meant that Brooks did a lot of home recording at his flat in Hackney, East London.

Land Observations, developed out of an interest in the former Roman roads that lay just a short walk from his front door - roads of communication and conquest that stretch from the old City of London and out across parts of Britain, Europe and beyond.

Land Observations witnesses Brooks exploring the power of minimalism via layered, repetitive electric VI string guitar – creating warm, evocative instrumentals.

Although Brooks spent considerable time researching Roman Roads-, with each of the compositions responding to the psychogeography of an individual road - this is not just a historical project, or an attempt to look only into the past. There is an obvious fascination with Roman Roads as man made structures, with their bold lines carving through the landscape, creating an album that's a reflection on the broader ideas of travel, momentum and progress.

Roman Roads IV - XI is released on Mute on CD, vinyl and download, with packaging featuring original drawings by Brooks.

The album was recorded at the Bridge and Tunnel Mobile, Berlin and engineered and mixed by Mark Bihler and James Brooks.

Cat Power — “Sun” 2XLP pre-order

Cat Power‘s first album of original material in six years, Sun, will be released on Sept. 4 via Matador. Chan Marshall recorded and played everything on the album herself, a noted departure from the band’s most recent, more expansive work.

SUN is the new studio album from Cat Power. Six years after her last album of original material, Chan Marshall has moved on from her collaborative forays into Memphis soul and Delta blues. She wrote, played, recorded and produced the entirety of SUN by herself, a statement of complete control that is echoed in the songs’ themes.

The music on SUN employs a sweeping stylistic palette: There’s the classic Cat Power haunting guitar and provocative vocal hook in “Cherokee” (“marry me to the sky… bury me upside down”); the irresistible Latin-sounding nine-piano loop of “Ruin”; upbeat, almost dancey electronic anthems like “Real Life” and “3,6,9”; and the stirring, 8-minute epic “Nothin But Time,” featuring a vocal cameo by Iggy Pop. The swagger of “Silent Machine” brings to mind mid-70s Jagger, contrasted with the unusual, sparse production of “Always on My Own.”

The narrative arc of the record is deeply American in its spaciousness and optimism, but the music itself is defiantly modern and global.

Mixed by Philippe Zdar (Cassius, Chromeo, Phoenix).

Pre-orders of the double LP are available here.
