Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

Blue Oyster Cult - The Columbia Albums Collection Being Released Tomorrow

Originally formed in Long Island as Soft White Underbelly in 1967, Blue Oyster Cult combined adventurous lyrical themes with an aggressive instrumental sound. With passion and intelligence on display in equal measure, Blue Oyster Cult became the thinking fan's rock band and a sign of life in a sea of dull, anemic soft-pop.

Anthems like "Godzilla," "Harvester of Eyes" and "Don't Fear the Reaper" stretched the boundaries of rock topics while lead guitarist Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser became a hero to legions of budding axe-wielders. The band's mystique extended to their album artwork, resulting in some of the most distinctive and iconic LP covers of the rock era. Blue Oyster Cult - The Columbia Albums Collection gathers the essential pieces of the Blue Oyster Cult story into one mind-boggling totality.

Blue Oyster Cult - The Columbia Albums Collection brings together the group's 14 official Columbia Records albums--including newly-mastered editions of On Your Feet or on Your Knees, Fire of Unknown Origin, The Revolution by Night, Mirrors, Cultosaurus Erectus, Extraterrestrial Live, Club Ninja and Imaginos--alongside two newly-curated bonus discs: Rarities and Radios Appear: The Best of the Broadcasts (a special collection of classic live performances).

In addition, the Blue Oyster Cult - The Columbia Albums Collection box set comes with a special download code good for four live concert broadcasts as well as a forty page booklet chock full of photos and liner notes from celebrated music writer and guitarist Lenny Kaye.

Sandy Special Brings In Nearly 23 Million

NBC is reporting that its benefit concert for Superstorm Sandy victims drew close to $23 million in donations to the American Red Cross.  Friday's hour-long telecast included performances by artists native to the areas hardest-hit by the strom, including New Jersey natives Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi and Billy Joel of New York's Long Island. Other musicians who took part in the special included Sting, Christina Aguilera, Mary J. Blige, Tina Fey and Jon Stewart.

Sandy's assault last week killed more than 100 people in 10 states and created widespread damage and power outages.

We hope those affected by Sandy are safe and can rebuild from this terrible disaster.

from our friend Tim at www.sundazed.com:

We (like many others) were planning on seeing and hobnobbing with many of you at the WFMU Record Fair in NYC last weekend. At the show, we were going to feature a large SALE section of Sundazed vinyl and CDs - great titles at INCREDIBLY low prices… So, with the cancellation of the show, we've decided to put this handsome sale up on our website for a limited period of time. And since we had to empty our entire warehouse in anticipation of Sandy, we found even more cool stuff to add… So, skip the mall for now and take advantage of these LIMITED TIME SALE PRICES to knock out your giftlist, your wish list, or both. You’ve been good this year (relatively speaking...we’re grading on the curve here). Reward yourself! Your holiday soundtrack starts here!

As Jamaican music evolved from tourist-pleasing calypso to the explosive culture of dancehall, the artwork that adorned its record sleeves told the story, too, of the unique social development of a dynamic young nation.
