FOR THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 2, 2009

DEAR JERRY: Seeing “Mad Men” win all these Best Drama on TV awards got me curious, so I got the first season DVDs. Guess what? It's as good as advertised, and now I'm a fan.

Playing one of the leading ladies is an actress named January Jones, and it is she who sends me your way.

Her unusual name brings to mind a long-forgotten record from the 1970s, all about a girl named January Jones. Though a popular tune at the time, I have never heard this song since.

The singer may be Billy Crash Craddock, who had a lot of hits back then. If not, then who?

Assuming she wasn't born before the song, the actress must have been named after it. What do you think?
—Cindy Galt, Salt Lake City

DEAR CINDY: In keeping with the theme, I see you also posted your letter the first week in January.

You have every reason to suspect the hit song inspired the name given to Miss Jones. Coincidentally, both debuted in January, three years apart.

“January Jones,” a Top 40 Country hit for Johnny Carver (ABC 12052), hit the charts January 18, 1975, and January Jones joined the Sioux Falls populace on January 5, 1978.

With the song arriving on the scene three years earlier, the connection is very believable. But then so is the idea that the name comes from her birth month.

Neither scenario is accurate.

The parents of this Golden Globe nominee (for “Mad Men”) became enamored with January as a name after discovering January Wayne, a character in “Once is Not Enough,” a 1973 book by Jacqueline Susann.

Two years later, around the time of Johnny Carver's hit, Hollywood brought the novel to the big screen as “Jacqueline Susann's Once Is Not Enough.”

In the film version, January (Deborah Raffin) is the spoiled daughter of washed-up movie producer Mike Wayne (Kirk Douglas).

Just when you thought it couldn't get more Januaryish, there is yet another actress named January Jones — one a generation ahead of the more famous January.

This lady appeared in just two films: “Looking for Love,” a 1964 flick starring Connie Francis,” and “Don't Worry, We'll Think of a Title” (1966).

See and hear "January Jones" here.

DEAR JERRY: After exhausting many music catalogs in my search for a song, I discovered you and how many others you've helped.

While traveling across the country listening to different stations, I heard “Honeycomb,” but not by Jimmie Rodgers as you would suspect.

This one is by Ricky Nelson, who I never even knew recorded the song.

His is the best version of “Honeycomb” I have ever heard. Do you know of it?

—Ron Stofflet, Montello, Wisc.

DEAR RON: Nelson's “Honeycomb” is one of the tracks on his first LP, “Ricky” (Imperial 9048), as well as one of the three “Ricky” EPs issued simultaneously with that album (Imperial 153).

A double “Ricky” CD is currently available for about $10, and “Honeycomb” is among its 31 tracks.

It is surprising how very different Rick's version is from the more familiar Jimmie Rodgers hit. It is at a slower tempo and contains several completely different verses. It is almost another song altogether.

IZ ZAT SO? From the invention in 1948 of the long play album to “Meet the Beatles,” in 1964, only two mainstream Rock & Roll artists topped the LP charts.

Elvis has six No. 1 albums during that period, and the only other one is “Ricky” (1957), belonging to Ricky Nelson.

Not counted in this specific count are folk (Kingston Trio) and R&B acts (Ray Charles, Little Stevie Wonder).

Green Day reveal new album artwork

Band credit artists Sixten for inspiration

Green Day have revealed the cover art for the new album today (February 10), just a day after they named the record.

The stencilled artwork, pictured, was apparently inspired by artist Sixten, with art direction credited to Chris Bilheimer.

As previously reported, Green Day's new album will be called '21st Century Breakdown', and will be released in May. It's the follow-up to 2004's 'American Idiot'.

The Decemberists announce new tour dates, cover art

The cover art for The Decemberists' new album, Hazards of Love, has changed here is the new art.

The Decemberists have never been afraid of a little ambition. So it shouldn't come as a surprise that for their upcoming U.S. tour, they've decided to eschew typical rock-band protocol and present their recent release in a slightly different format.

When the Portland-based group hits the road in support of their March 24 release, "Hazards of Love," they'll be presenting it as a 17-song suit. It seems fitting for an album that tells the tale "woman named Margaret who is ravaged by a shape-shifting animal; her lover, William; a forest queen; and a cold-blooded, lascivious rake.

Here are just some of the dates, with more to be announced soon:

Country Singer Bee Dies

Country singer Molly Bee passed away last Saturday (age 69) from complications related to a stroke.

Bee starred on television's "Hometown Jamboree," "The Pinky Lee Show "and "The Tennessee Ernie Ford Show." Her recordings included a 1952 hit version of "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" and 1965's "Losing You/Miserable Me." Though Bee had limited chart success (her album Swingin' Country peaked at #40 on the Country Albums chart), she was always a big concert draw.

When Legends Meet

B.B. King said he got a big thrill on Grammy night when he met Paul McCartney. “I met all the Beatles except him until today!” My guess is that Paul McCartney was just as honored to meet B.B. King.

New Osbourne TV Show F&*^%INg Sucks

In an early look at the new TV show Osbournes: Reloaded has brought a chorus of catcalls from a number of websites. The preview shows that the program will be a mix of pranks (think Ozzy working the window at a fast food restaurant), comedy skits and musical performances with a good amount of swearing (well, probably bleeping) thrown in for good measure. Maybe redoing something that was great at first is just overdoing it a bit, let it go Ozzie

Let It Be- The Beatles

Album Cover Art

Let's start a long look at Molly Hatchet album cover art. Personally, I have never seen a MH cover I did not like. They are amazing covers and some have been done by Frank Frazetta (born February 9, 1928) who is an American fantasy and science fiction artist, noted for work in comic books, paperback book covers, paintings, posters, record-album covers, and other media. Some of his album covers include:

Nazareth - Expect No Mercy (1977)
Molly Hatchet - Molly Hatchet (1978)
Molly Hatchet - Flirtin' with Disaster (1979)
Molly Hatchet - Beatin' the Odds (1980)
Wolfmother - Wolfmother (2006)

Molly Hatchet

Southern Rock Masters - 2008

I bought this album mainly on faith, thinking, "OK, I like all the original versions of the songs they recorded for this, let's hear them Molly Hatchet style!" It's OK, but on this CD it appears that the band was trying to record faithful reproductions in the style of the original artists, for the most part. For a cover band, they did a good job here. However, this is Molly Hatchet!--a band with its own considerable power, legacy and individual style of music. I don't want to hear them play watered down versions of the styles of the original artists, I want to hear them approach these songs in their own style! Some of these songs shouldn't have been considered, IMO. Desperado, for one. C'mon guys. You're not a ballad band. Sharp Dressed Man--OK, that's more in their ballpark. But instead of taking Billy Gibbons' licks to another level with more power chords and dual leads or whatever, they're just trying to sound like ZZ Top. And it's good, but hey, if I want to listen to a ZZ Top song played in the style of ZZ Top, I'd rather listen to ZZ Top doing it!

So overall, a disappointment. A cool idea, kind of like what Guns 'n' Roses did with the Spaghetti Incident, but on this CD I thought the Hatchet should have taken these songs and adapt them more to their own style. ~ Amazon.com review

Birthdays:

Don Wilson- Ventures (1937)

Roberta Flack is 70.

They Are Missed:

Cliff Burton- Metallica (1962)

Brian Connolly, vocalist for Sweet, who reached #3 in 1973 with "Little Willy,” died of kidney failure in 1997 (age 52).

The late Ral Donner ("Girl Of My Best Friend") was born in 1943.

History:

In 1942, "Chattanooga Choo Choo," by Glen Miller and his Orchestra became the first recording to be awarded a Gold record. It was actually just a master copy of the disc sprayed with gold lacquer by RCA as a publicity stunt. The actual award recognized today as a Gold Record would not be initiated for another sixteen years when the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) borrowed the idea and trademarked the Gold Record. The first Gold single was awarded to Perry Como in 1958 for "Catch A Falling Star" and the first Gold album was given to Gordon McRae for the soundtrack to Oklahoma.

In 1958, Elvis attained his ninth US #1 single with the double-sided hit "Don't" / "I Beg of You.”

The Four Tops were inked to Berry Gordy's Motown label in 1963 and received a $400 signing bonus.

Frank Sinatra's "Come Fly With Me" rose to the top of the US album chart in 1958, where it would stay for the next five weeks.

In 1964, in the wake of last night's appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, the Beatles became overnight sensations. Elvis Presley sent them a telegram of congratulations and the Fab Four held a press conference at New York's Plaza Hotel. American newspapers reported that "millions of teenage boys are spending extra time in front of the mirror trying to make their hair look like Paul McCartney's."

In 1967, as the Beatles continued to record "A Day in the Life," they're visited in the studio by Pattie Harrison, Mick Jagger, Marianne Faithfull, Keith Richards, Mike Nesmith, and Donovan.

In 1971, Carole King released her album Tapestry bringing the contemporary singer/songwriter character to the mainstream radio.

Dire Straits released their signature single "Sultans of Swing” in 1979.

Van Halen made a grand entrance in 1978 with their self-titled debut record. It has a cover of the Kinks’ “You Really Got Me” and the cut “Runnin’ With The Devil.”

Little Richard recorded "Long Tall Sally” in 1956.

The Beatles closed Beatles USA in 1968, their American fan club and business office and fired their US press agents, severing all American business connections. They also withdrew from the late Brian Epstein's NEMS Enterprises and turned all business affairs over to their newly formed record company, Apple.

The Bubble Gum music craze got its start in 1968 when "Simon Says" by The 1910 Fruitgum Company entered the US record charts, where it will #4. Over the next year and a half, the group will have four more Top 40 hits.

French orchestra leader Paul Mauriat pushed all Rock records aside and reached Billboard's top spot in 1968 with a harpsichord and violin laden instrumental called "Love Is Blue.” Mauriat was no stranger to US success as he had written the music to Peggy March's 1963 #1 hit "I Will Follow Him.”

The Beatles - Yesterday

Rock & Roll Tidbits

Guitarist David Marks was once a member of the Beach Boys, playing on the first five albums. “I thought my new group, Dave and the Markmen would take right off,” sighed the guitarist three decades later. Ooops.

Ex-Boomtown Rats member Bob Geldof once lost his job at a photo-processing plant because he had smoked a few joints in the darkroom, ruining a batch of film.

Jim Morrison was a freak’s freak. In March of 1969, he was arrested for exposing himself during a Miami concert. The ‘flashing’ rocker eventually had to go to court with a long list of charges that included: profanity, indecent exposure, lewd behavior, and public drunkenness. While in court the prosecutor asked Morrison if he had exposed himself, to which Morrison replied: “I don’t remember. I was too drunk.” He was later found guilty of exposing himself but actually found not guilty of public drunkenness. Oh, our lovely legal system at work.

After the very public trail, a friend asked Morrison what compelled him to expose himself onstage. “I wanted to see what it looked like in the spotlight,” explained the Lizard King. I guess he remembered that part.

While out and about, Jim Morrison spotted one of his friend’s sister standing in a boutique. “Whooopppeee, look at those tits!” he hollered. An elderly lady thought that Morrison was yelling at her. The feisty senior proceeded to chase the stunned rocker around the store, hitting him with her purse.

For their tour to promote the “Rumours” album, Fleetwood Mac spent thousands of dollars on a giant inflatable penguin. They only used it once.

In 1997, Mick Fleetwood estimated that he had spent the staggering total of 8 million dollars on the drug of choice: Cocaine.

At an Alice Cooper concert, he was chopping and smashing a watermelon onstage and when someone handed him a crutch, he continued his onslaught. Then he threw the disgusting mess out into the audience, followed quickly by a mass of feathers. He thought ‘This group of dummies just sat there and took it.” It was later that the shock-rocker learned that the first five rows of the audience were filled with disabled fans, they couldn’t move.

Danny Bonaduce of Partridge Family fame was a hazard to his own health. While in Florida in 1990, he was arrested on a drug charge. In 1991, he was arrested for assaulting a transvestite prostitute in Phoenix, Arizona. Seems he had paid for his/her services and then tried to get a refund when he discovered the truth. He left the scene traveling over 125 miles per hour in a 25 miles per hour zone.

After Ringo Starr joined up with the Beatles, his band mates didn’t think too much of Starr’s mental abilities. “If anything goes wrong, we can all blame it on Ringo,” explained John Lennon. “That’s what he’s here for.”

While playing a gig in Buffalo, New York, the Allman Brothers Band showed up fifteen minutes late and the club owner refused to pay them. Roadie Twiggs Lyndon wasn’t amused so he stabbed the man three times with a fishing knife. The club owner died and Lyndon was arrested for first-degree murder. The band then continued their tour.

2009 Grammy Awards Shine Bright

With the ‘economic turndown,’ there are some spectacles that seem to be unfazed. Despite the obvious tough times for the music industry, the 51st annual Grammy Awards at the Staples Center in Los Angles came through with flying colors; with star after star shining brightly amid a bevy of live acts and newcomers.

In his welcoming speech, Neil Portnow, the President of the Awarding Organization, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, suggested that all in attendance have a good time and implored new President Obama to create a new cabinet position for the Secretary of the Arts.

AP – Alison Krauss, left and Robert Plant accept the award for album of the year at the 51st Annual Grammy

An unlikely pairing for former Led Zeppelin rocker Robert Plant and Nashville bluegrass sweetheart Alison Krauss stole the show, winning five Grammy wards; including “Album of the Year” for “Raising Sand.”

When Krauss accepted the award with Plant, she reminded everyone that, although the rocker is 60, “there’s never a dull moment.” Plant stated, “I’m bewildered. In the old days we would have called this selling out, but I think it’s a good way to spend a Sunday.”

The live acts were an eclectic mix of musical genres, sure to appease all in attendance as well as the millions of starry-eyed television viewers. Some of the notable performances included:

The young pairing of Taylor Swift (19) and Miley Cyrus(16), who sang a duet of Swift’s song “Fifteen”

66 year-old Sir Paul McCartney belting out an old Beatle classic with 40 year-old drummer Dave Grohl on the drums

Soul legend Stevie Wonder teaming up with the Jonas Brothers

A ‘rap pack’ teaming of Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, Kayne West, T.I. and a very pregnant M.I.A. in a performance of T.I’s “Swagger Like Us”

Guitar geeks John Mayer and Keith Urban sitting in with Blues legend B.B. King

U2 kicking the event off with their new single “Get On Your Boots”

Rock legend Neil Diamond serenading the crowd with his classic song “Sweet Caroline”

Radiohead performing with the USC marching band

Jay-Z teaming up with Coldplay

A Four Tops tribute

Lil Wayne and Allen Toussaint paying tribute to New Orleans

A teary-eyed performance from Jennifer Hudson of “You Pulled Me Through”

The Grammy Awards tapped into the Internet with official updates on both Twitter and Facebook. There was also an improvisational collaboration to fill in for Rihanna and Chris Brown who were both nominated and scheduled to perform, but were absent after LA Police confirmed that Brown (who is dating Rihanna) is the subject of an investigation into felony domestic violence battery from the night before. So Al Green teamed up with Justin Timberlake, Boyz II Men and Keith urban to perform Green’s iconic soul number “Let’s Stay Together.”

Instead of focusing on the negative, the Recording Academy focused on what the night is all about, the music, the musicians, recording artists and producers and the immeasurable passion that is put forth by all.

Here is a condensed list of the winners:
