Leading Music Library Company Songs To Your Eyes, Ltd., Launches New Latin Division

"Caliente Music" Catalogue Represents First Release from New Division

Woodland Hills, CA , November 02, 2009 | SHOOT Publicity Wire | --- Renowned music library company Songs To Your Eyes, Ltd., has launched a new, Latin Music Division, and, concurrently, that division's first release, the "Caliente Music" catalogue. The announcements were made today by Opher Yisraeli, founder, Songs To Your Eyes, Ltd.

Comprised of beautifully recorded and authentic Salsa, Cuban, Reggaeton, Latin, Hip Hop, Cocktail Latin Jazz, Merengue, Latin Pop, Rock En Espaniol and other genres, the music featured within the new "Caliente" catalogue was recorded by top notch, live musicians, based in Puerto Rico, Cuba, Miami, and the Dominican Republic. Some recent talent signed to create music for the "Caliente" catalogue include the world renowned, Puerto Rican band "Plena Libre," "Moises Gonzales" from Cuba, and the hard edge Reggaeton of "Mr. Dominican." The music featured on "Caliente" can be delivered to clients of Songs To Your Eyes on CD, searchable DVDs, or via hard drive.

Songs To Your Eyes is making the "Caliente Music" catalogue available for use within television shows, feature films, film trailers (both-in theater and on TV), TV promos, and within other multi-media outlets. Initial placements from the "Caliente Music" catalogue will be heard in the "Desperate Housewives, Season 5" DVD trailer (for client ABC/Buena Vista), within a TV promo for "Handy Manny" (for client Disney Television), within the television series "Burn Notice" (on behalf of client USA Networks), and within the theatrical film trailer promoting "Family Wedding" (for client Searchlight Pictures), among others.

Regarding the launch of his company's new division and the release of the "Caliente" catalogue, Yisraeli said, "This initial, 14-volume collection of music was specifically compiled with film and TV placements in mind. I noticed that no authentic, hi-quality, Latin catalogue was currently being offered by other music libraries. We catalogued the music on 'Caliente' in a way that will help editors and music supervisors find what they need fast, by tagging the music with key words that describe what the various offerings sound like. The catalogue is available on our website, and can be searched by entering 'Genre,' 'Instrumentation,' 'Moods,' and 'Tempos.' We hope all of our clients will grab a margarita and join our party. Ay Caramba!"

Music News & Notes

I found this interesting, personally, I have never downloaded any music, I believe that they should be paid for their hard work, music isn't supposed to be free.

Downloaders Spend MORE On Music Than Those Who Obey

People who illegally download music spend more on official releases than anyone else, according to a new survey. The study, published today by think-tank Demos, found those who admit to file sharing spent an average £77 a year on singles and albums – £33 more than those who claim never to have wrongly accessed music for free.

Researcher Peter Bradwell said the findings should force companies and politicians to ‘wake up to the changing nature’ of the music industry as the Government plans to disconnect illegal downloaders from the internet in a ‘three strikes and you’re out’ rule.

An estimated seven million UK users download files illegally every year, which will cost the industry £200million in 2009, according to trade association, the British
Phonographic Industry. Artists Lily Allen and James Blunt recently voiced support for the Government plans, while Latin pop star Shakira claims illegal file sharing brings her closer to her fans.

‘Politicians and music companies need to wake up to the changing nature of music consumption and embrace the demand for new business models that offer lower prices and easier access to music.’

A 1,008 people aged between 18 and 50 were quizzed last month for the survey.

Some Fans Upset With Bon Jovi Ticket Prices

Bon Jovi has evidently ticked off a few fans in England. There have been numerous negative comments about ticket prices for the O2 Arena shows in London. Tickets start at about $74 for general admission and run up to $327; however, the super premium tickets have a price tag of $2,100.

Some fans are calling for a boycott of the show but it doesn't seem to be taking as the first five shows sold out in hours.

Single Strokes: singer releases solo album

PARIS — New York rock band the Strokes have been busy since their last album in 2006, just not together, and lead singer Julian Casablancas carries on the trend releasing his first solo album Monday.

"Phrazes for the Young" (RCA/Jive/Sony) mixes tambourines with brass and synthesizers to create a retro-futurist sound that Casablancas will perform to European crowds on a tour starting at the end of November.

"It can be difficult to experiment when you are part of a group," Casablancas said to Spin magazine, "With 'Phrazes' I wanted to be madly different and put down a bridge between traditional and modern music."

His voice is always distinctive, some of the guitar melodies are recognisable, but otherwise "Phrazes" is a long way from the garage rock of the Strokes.

Casablancas was inspired by Thom Yorke, Queen and Michael Jackson for his solo debut and borrowed from the eighties electronic sounds of New Order and Queen, as well as melodies more reminiscent of the south of the United States.

The other Strokes have also been busy: guitarist Albert Hammond Jr released two critically acclaimed solo albums, drummer Fabrizio Moretti made delicate melodies with the trio Little Joy and bassist Nikolai Fraiture signed his solo album under the name Nickel Eye.

The main songwriter for the Strokes, Casablancas also wrote all the songs and played most of the instruments on his short eight-track album, produced by Jason Lader (Rilo Kiley) and Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes).

He kept a close eye on the artwork too and took the title from an Oscar Wilde book.

Despite their solo activity, the Strokes stick by their promise of a fourth album and hint at a sound that will be a cross between Thin Lizzy and A-Ha.

Catalog Your Vinyl Record Collection With Easy To Use Software

Written By Robert Benson

We love our music. Some prefer the historic audio medium of vinyl records; some enjoy the digital music that surrounds us everyday. No matter what medium you prefer, if you have a collection it is very important to document it. Not only for insurance purposes, but to also keep track of exactly what you have or may be looking for.

There are many software applications available today that claim to be the best for cataloging and documenting a record collection, some may even use an Excel spreadsheet. But, I have found the ultimate application, one that is very user friendly and accomplishes the difficult task of cataloging a record collection.

I recently spoke with Matt Trush, who operates the website http://analogapartment.com. Analog Apartment is a place for people who love collecting and experiencing their music on vinyl and is a site that is designed to help you mange your record collection. Now you can keep track of what you have and what you want in a simple, elegant web application.

Let’s learn more about the program and how it can help you:

What made you design the program, had you tried others on the market?

I just wanted something that was simpler, cleaner and more personal than keeping a list in a spreadsheet. I have seen and tried several other programs but most of them seemed to have more features than I needed and looked more like a business application.

What kind of computer background do you have?

My grandfather introduced me to computers and programming when I was 9 and I've been hooked on building products ever since. When I went to university, I initially majored in Computer Science but switched to the MIS / Business after a late night battle with code. Overall, I wanted to design products and experiences much more than I wanted code.

Tibi Ballai, a good friend of mine and the other half of Analog Apartment, is the real genius behind the technology. I design the front-end experience in Flex and he makes it work.

I signed up for the product and fell in love with it in a matter of minutes. I didn’t really see any directions – yet it is put together so well, there are really none needed, just click a few buttons and then you can see what you can do with it. Was this purposely done, can you elaborate on the design functions and ideas behind them?

That's the goal of any product we design. Great products have a way of walking you through the product and keeping it as intuitive as possible. We wanted to keep everything simple and clean - more like a personalized collection kiosk than a spreadsheet or database.

The grading system that you incorporated into the program, is this the standard Goldmine system? Do you have any plans to change that?

It is and yes, we do have plans to make the interface more flexible to the different types of information people want to collect about their records. Some people want to track catalog numbers, genres, labels, sizes, condition, and value whereas others just want the basics.

The fields we have in there today are there because they help capture what is unique about your particular copy.

You have a column for ‘purchased at’ and the date purchased, why as a collector do you think this is important?

For some it's important and for others it's not. I used to be really good at remembering where I got my records. As my collection grew, I wanted to keep track of where and when I got my records to give me an idea of how my collection has evolved and what places helped me get there.

It is so easy to navigate around the program with the + and = signs, any plans to incorporate new buttons or functions?

Absolutely, but we never want to add features just for the sake of saying we have them. Our goal is to enhance the collecting experience and not weigh people down with a clunky piece of software.

We recently launched wishlists, album cover art view, and a filter feature so you can easily find records based on the information you've entered. Next, we'll be looking to add features that allow you to share your collections and wishlists with others.

I love the notes section, will you incorporate and vinyl cover art into the program? Regarding the notes section, what can that be used for?

Personally, I use the notes section to keep track of favorite tracks, lyrics, and information about my experiences with the album and artist.

It is also great for capturing information about an album where we do not have a dedicated field. With the new filter feature, one can locate records based on anything that is entered in notes. It's really flexible.

With respect to cover art, we will look to expand this functionality down the line. Right now, we just wanted to make it easy for people to add an image to associate with an album.

We just launched some updates to our record collecting app, my.analogapartment.com.

In this update, we focused on making it easy to keep track of the records you have AND the records you want. We even added a handy print feature so you can take your wishlist with you to the local stores, record fairs, and garage/stoop sales.

Is there any way to take the data that I enter and copy it to another program like Excel or Word? (A copy and paste feature?)

Right now, we don't have a feature to pull the data into Excel or Word but I have received requests to do this. We will probably build it into the program. If anyone wants an Excel or Word file with their collection information in it, they can shoot me an email and I'll be happy to export their data from the database.

The flipside, we also want people to be able to upload a list of albums into Analog Apartment. For people that already keep track of their collection in Excel or another program, we don't want them to have to enter each album individually. Just like exporting, we're happy to import a collection from a spreadsheet into My Analog Apartment on behalf of the user.

Right now, the program is available as a free download. You will be amazed at just how easy it is to document and catalog your record collection using this simple software. It was developed by record collectors- for record collectors and is the best one available on the market today and I highly recommend stopping by and giving it a try. You won’t be disappointed.

Beatles Vinyl Remasters On The Way!

I'd like to thank friend Norm at http://ccdiscoveries.blogspot.com and Counter Clock Records for bringing this to my attention. I would guess we were all wondering not if, but when, this blessed event would happen. Now, in my opinion, I would hope that they just leave everything alone, no changing the cuts, leave them as is. Any thoughts?

The Beatles' back catalogue will be reissued on vinyl, says Jeff Jones, Chief Executive of Apple Corps.

Speaking exclusively to MOJO, Jones revealed that work on the next stage of the Beatles Remastered campaign is currently underway:

"We're working on them now," said Jones, "I don't have a release date. To put a release date next to them forces us into a situation where we're releasing something that might not be ready. "

The vinyl remasters will follow this year's stunning Mono and Stereo CD reissues, with the engineers at Abbey Road and Apple already hard at work:

"They are incredibly complicated in terms of getting the masters right and getting the packages right," added Jones. "How do you assemble them? How do you put them in a box? How much do they cost? We want to make sure we're doing it right and that people get real value from it."

Recordheads - you may officially begin salivating now. The Beatles vinyl remasters are on the way. No wait...Beatles vinyl remasters BOXSETS are on the way!

Led Zeppelin's eagerly-awaited reunion concert in London in 2007 was postponed for two weeks after guitarist Jimmy Page broke a finger. The tribute concert in honour of late Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun scheduled for November 26 would now take place on December 10. More than a million fans applied for the 20,000 tickets available, which cost £125 each. Profits from the show would go towards scholarships in Ertegun's name in the UK, USA and the country of his birth Turkey.

In 2007, Ozzy Osbourne claimed his reputation had been tarnished after a party supposedly involving him was organised by US police officers to round up missing criminal suspects. Over 500 people in North Dakota with outstanding arrest warrants were sent invitations and more than 30 suspects turned up. Osbourne said it was "insulting" that his name had been used but police argued it was a "creative" way to fight crime. Ozzy had been selected because he was due to play a gig in a nearby arena, which was used to explain why he would supposedly have attending the party.

The Stooges plot full reunion tour for 2010

We already know that The Stooges (sans guitarist Ron Asheton) will be reuniting in 2010. We already know that this reunion will include two performances at London’s Hammersmith Apollo in May as well as an appearance at ATP New York. What we didn’t know, until today (courtesy of a newly published interview with BBC 6), is that Iggy Pop and Co. will make their reunion quite the extensive affair.

According to the frontman, the band, which recently began rehearsing together, will launch its comeback at yet-to-be-announced date in Brazil in the “coming weeks.” Then, what is being described as a “full tour” will follow next year.

No word on what exactly this “full tour” will include, but we’re guessing they’ll be plenty of opportunities to spend your money in the year ahead.

Aggronautix To Release Limited Edition Figures Of Descendents' Milo, GG Allin "Extra Filthy Bloody"

Aggronautix is releasing a limited-edition figure of everyone's favorite pop punker, Milo of the Descendents (1000 numbered). This replica of the charismatic frontman stands at 7 inches tall, and is made of a lightweight polyresin. Displayed in a a black and blue tri-windowed box, Milo is portrayed in action and comes complete with his trademark nerd glasses and bitchin' stage stance.

"Wow, I can't believe it's happening," said Milo. "This is like the pinnacle of success for me; it's up there with the Playboy interview and Vans shoe!"

The figure will be distributed by MVD Entertainment Group - a company specializing in music-related distribution since 1986 - and DKE Toys - a wholesale distributor of urban/vinyl/designer art/objects/toys/figurines.

Milo is the fourth punk personality to be polyresinated by Aggronautix. In May of 2009, the company launched with a highly popular GG Allin "1991" figure, which was limited to 2000 numbered units. That figure has since sold out, making way for the ultra-limited "Extra Filthy Bloody" Edition.

The "Extra Filthy Bloody" Edition is a striking representation of GG Allin circa 1991 with added crud, blood, and cuts. The figure, limited to 500 numbered units, stands at 7 inches tall and is made of a lightweight polyresin. Loaded into a full color "splatter" box, here GG is accurately sculpted right down to the tattoos, and copious amounts of blood and filth.

Both figures will sell for $16.95 and are currently available for pre-order on the Aggronautix website. http://www.aggronautix.com/

Happy Halloween From Alice Cooper

Welcome to My Nightmare is a concept album by Alice Cooper, released in 1975. This was Alice Cooper's first solo album (all previous Alice Cooper releases were band efforts). The cover artwork was created by Drew Struzan. Rolling Stone would later rank it as one of the "Top 100 Album Covers Of All Time"

Welcome to My Nightmare is a concept album. The songs, heard in sequence, form a journey through the nightmares of a child named Steven.

Steven appears for the first time on the concept album Welcome To My Nightmare. The listener understands that Steven is/or has the mind of a young boy, maybe around 8 years old. The album is a journey through Steven's mind, which is severely damaged. He lives in a constant nightmare and we are guided through this nightmare, by The Curator (played by Vincent Price). In the first song on the album, the title track, we are introduced to the nightmare. On the second song, “Devils Food”, Steven is trapped in a spider's web and is about to be eaten by The Black Widow. The spider and the web (and the whole nightmare) are only in his mind, some sort of mental disease, so Steven thinks he has to obey The Black Widow, to get away alive. Steven says:

“These words he speaks are true. We're all humanary stew, if we don't pledge allegiance to… The Black Widow”

The next song on the album is called "Some Folks," and reading between the lines, one can understand that the song is about how Steven enjoys killing women and possibly doing things to their dead bodies;

“Some folks love to see red/ Some folks never talk about it/ Some folks crave a blue lady/ Some folks know and still they doubt it.”

And then we learn of Steven’s abuse of his wife. The song “Only Women Bleed” tells us this. We once again learn of Steven’s lust for the dead, in the song “Cold Ethyl” where it’s clear that Steven is doing things to a woman’s (Ethyl’s) corpse. The next thing that is revealed to the listener is of Steven’s childhood and how he became the psycho killer we now know. In “Years Ago” we understand that Steven was alone as a child, and maybe that he feels rejected by friends and adults. The song “Steven” shows his transformation from an innocent child to a murderer.

“I don't want to feel you die, but if that's the way that God has planned you/ I'll put pennies on your eyes and it will go away, see?/ You've only lived a minute of your life/ I must be dreaming, please stop screaming”

Obviously some one has died. Maybe it’s Steven’s young mother, maybe his baby brother or, most likely, it’s the young Steven – the innocent. In the end of the previous song, “Years Ago” we hear the child-Steven talking to himself, as an old man:

“ - I'm a little boy (young Steven) - No, I'm a great big man (old man Steven) - No, let's be a little boy. For a little while longer. Maybe an hour? (young Steven) - No, Steven. We have to go back now (old man Steven) “

These lines support the theory that it is in fact the young Steven – Steven’s childhood and innocence – that has died. So who is he telling to stop screaming (“I must be dreaming, please stop screaming”)? It could be Steven who is screaming, because he is grief-stricken that his childhood has died. And he is in fact, pleading with himself to stop screaming. Another interpretation of this could be that it’s again, the child Steven, that is screaming – the childhood’s death-rattle. There is also a third possibility that it is the Curator that is screaming. The refrain to the song “Steven” goes like this:

“Steven!/ Steven! I hear my name! Steven! Is someone calling me? I hear my name! Steven! That icy breath it whispers screams of pain!”

The voice that chants “Steven! Steven!” is probably his wife, as he is killing her. This means that Steven could be beseeching her to stop screaming. After we have taken part of Steven’s transformation, he wakes up. Until now, we are unsure if the nightmare is a real nightmare (just a bad dream) or in fact part of Steven’s mental disease. But in the song “The Awakening” we understand that during the nightmare, Steven has killed his wife.

“Getting up from my easy chair looking for my wife/ Following a trail of crimson spots that lead into the night/ Suddenly I realize/ I see it all through real eyes/ These crimson spots are dripping from my hand/ And, ooh, it makes me feel like a man”

From this we can draw the conclusion that the nightmare occurred when Steven was sleepwalking but not knowing what was real or what was his imagination, he abused his wife during “Only Women Bleed”, did things to her corpse during “Cold Ethyl” and then sat down in his easy chair, “waking up” and at first thinking that everything was a bad dream. But then he realizes what he has done. As a result of this he escapes into drinking alcohol, which takes place in "Escape":

“Escape/ I get out when I can/ Escape/ Anytime I can/ Let’s all escape/ I'm crying in my beer/ C'mon let's escape/ Just get me out of here”

Welcome to My Nightmare inspired the Alice Cooper: The Nightmare TV special and a worldwide concert tour in 1975, and the Welcome To My Nightmare concert film in 1976.

Steven=Alice Theory

Some Alice Cooper fans believe that Steven is actually the same person as Alice Cooper. To understand this, one must understand the Alice Cooper persona. Alice has always talked about his stage persona in third person, and by this he is pointing out that the person he is on stage is not the same person he is in real life. To make it easier we can call the off-stage person Vincent Furnier (which was Alice’s real name until he legally changed it in 1974), and the stage person Alice Cooper. When Vincent was an alcoholic he had difficulties separating himself from Alice. He thought he had to be Alice and behave like him, even off stage. This problem is similar to that Steven has. Vincent Furnier (off stage Alice) is represented by the innocent child-Steven, while Alice Cooper is represented by the adult madman-Steven. This theory supports the idea that Steven appears on Dada. Taking in mind that Steven is Alice, brings a new perspective to the story of The Last Temptation. The story could be a metaphor for when Alice Cooper was “cured” from his alcoholism, and became a Christian in the early 80’s. Vincent Furnier’s temptation was alcohol (and behind all temptation lurks the Devil) and when he started to believe in God, he defeated his alcoholism (and thus the Devil). So, Alice is Steven, his alcoholism is The Showman, and they both get saved by the same one: God.

The inside cover of the Along Came A Spider album has two photos - both are of Alice as a child but one has him with the Alice makeup on and Steven written underneath. This again shows the possibility of Steve being Alice. track 11 of "Welcome To My Nightmare", "Escape", reinforces this theory between Steven=Alice and could also be what inspired both photos; "Paint on my cruel or happy face and hide me behind it."

This is rock and roll macabre, at it's finest!

Art Review | 'Who Shot Rock & Roll'Every Picture Tells a Story, Don’t It?

By KEN JOHNSON

Rock ’n’ roll and photography need each other — or, at least, rock musicians need photographers. You can’t be a star if you don’t have an image. But what makes a good rock photograph is something to ponder, and “Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955 to the Present” at the Brooklyn Museum offers an excellent opportunity to do so.

Organized by the photography historian Gail Buckland, the exhibition presents more than 175 images by 105 photographers, and includes album cover art, candid snapshots, publicity portraits and pictures of live performances.

Leaving aside aesthetic issues, it is hard to say what makes a high-quality rock photograph. So much depends on what you bring to it. For many viewers Richard Avedon’s pellucid black-and-white portraits of the Beatles in 1967 will resonate differently from David LaChappelle’s garishly colorful 1999 picture of the white hip-hop star Eminem sitting naked but holding a strategically placed stick of dynamite with a sparkling fuse.

BACKTRACKING FORWARD: WFMU RECORD FAIR

Published by Gregorious Winter

White label disc jockey promos. Withdrawn 45 picture sleeves pressed in Sweden. Mint Lexingtons with a deep groove, flat edge and RVG in the run off. While this terminology is alien to the general population, these words were often murmured throughout the WFMU Record & CD Fair held at Metropolitan Pavilion’s expansive convention space in downtown Manhattan from October 23rd-26th. Fuzzed out, foot stomping, head banging and shoe gazing grooves from every period of music could be found this past weekend as millions of records were available for purchase under one roof.

WFMU Record Fair

This year’s event saw record breaking (not literally) numbers in attendance, with 2,300 people paying admission to get in on a dreary Saturday and 4,000 people tallied for the whole weekend. Once inside, attendees were presented with a cornucopia of sensory-overwhelming paths to travel down that included live music, film screenings, DJs spinning and, of course, more records and CDs than you can shake a stick at. With over one hundred and fifty dealers, every conceivable genre of music could be found at the annual event. While vinyl was the main course at the convention, there were plenty of dealers who were hawking non-playable tchotkes to tempt potential customers. From books to t-shirts to homemade drink coasters (nothing says class like resting a glass of Merlot on a Kraftwerk coaster), there really was something for everyone.

The Trashmen Live at WFMU Record Fair

What makes this annual pow-wow of music nuts so unique is the addition of live music performances throughout the weekend. The walls of the pavilion shook as the legendary group from the 1960s The Trashmen played a rawkus set of dirty rock and roll, including their infamous hit “Surfin Bird.” Following close behind was Heavy Trash with an hour long set of raw and bluesy grooves. Legendary NYC guitarist Jon Spencer, of Blues Explosion fame, is 1/3 of the group and their presence at the fair was mind-blowing. Sunday was highlighted with a majestic performance by Chris Brokaw and his 12-string guitar trio, setting a more calm and relaxed atmosphere at the event. Throughout the whole weekend, the radio station’s DJs spun slabs of LPs and 45s for the crowd. Unlike many record conventions where hundreds of thousands of records are in one room and none are actually being played, WFMU provides an uninterrupted stream of music for the whole weekend.

Rarities are abundant at the Record Fair

Walking the aisles, bits of conversation in French, German, Italian, Russian and Japanese could all be heard as travelers came from all points to attend the fair. This show, which is the largest of its kind in North America, attracts every manner of customer through the doors. Many of the foreign attendees are knee deep in the business of buying and selling high-end vinyl, dropping thousands of dollars in the US and turning a profit back in their country where desirable Blue Note Jazz LPs and obscure funk LPs from the Midwest are not to be found. Beyond the high rollers though, the bulk of attendees were just people who love to shop for music but find it increasingly hard to do so as record stores continue to close left and right. The most notable trend though was the overwhelming amount of young people digging through crates and building their collections with foundational artists and recordings. This development in the record collecting community is a strong sign and solid proof of vinyl regaining a foothold in the market.

My nook in the corner attracted a fair share of collectors seeking out all kinds of genres— many attracted by my display of dozens of records plastered all over the wall behind me. Even so, the fair was sprinkled with highly specialized dealers hawking very specific albums and singles. Crates littered with ludicrously rare Nigerian high-life and afro-beat records could be found close to the stacks of mouth watering Brazilian psych and jazz pieces brought straight from São Paulo. Collectors of Northern Soul 45s (read next week’s post “Trends in Collecting”) could be seen satisfying their fix as buyers sought out anything obscure on the favorable 45rpm medium. Beyond all the rare and expensive vinyl that can empty a pocket of cash in an eye blink, the record fair also offered up a plethora of bargain discs for casual shoppers who favor paying for wax in single digit values. Despite my addiction to vinyl and my insatiable appetite to consume overwhelming amounts of it, I did not make many purchases this weekend. From behind my table, I enjoyed the countless hours of meeting new people and watching interesting specimens of the human race. For every ordinary music loving person that would walk past, at least two examples of your stereotypical music fanatic —smelling of old records and body odor—would shuffle by.

With the last spin of the turntable and the handful of diehards scoring the best bargains at the final seconds, the WFMU Record Fair closed its doors until next year thus allowing everyone another twelve months to recover and excavate more obscure wax for the hungry masses.

Keep Digging!

Music News & Notes

Rare Beatles LPs

Earlier in the week, I told you about a gent who, for years, during the wee small hours, as an employee at a Capitol Records pressing plant created a series of magnificent one-of-a-kind LPs.

These spectacular, rainbow-coloured records were created by an unnamed former worker at a Capitol plant in Canada. After shifts at the factory, the employee "would amuse himself", according to a pair of Toronto vinyl dealers, "by creating totally unique coloured-vinyl LPs". As an employee of Capitol, this Beatles fan allegedly had access to the "original plates" for several albums. Using these, he would press his own special copies – applying coloured dye and artisanal techniques.

These copies include Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on bright baby-blue marble vinyl, the 1967-70 greatest hits compilation on swirled blue-and-white vinyl, and a translucent blue LP with side A of Revolver and side B of John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band album.

However, the most beautiful item in the collection is the Beatles' Love Songs anthology, made with gold vinyl. This is streaked with an abstract expressionist rainbow, like an explosion at a paint factory. Unfortunately, the set's second LP is just plain black vinyl.

In addition to the Beatles records, the vinyl guru also pressed special versions of albums by Helen Reddy, Peter Appleyard and a compilation featuring Anne Murray.

There may be more in the treasure chest, watch here for more updates.

Red Hot Chili Peppers plan 2010 release

With enthusiasm again behind them and a self-imposed hiatus scheduled to end this month, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have begun plotting their next move. And as drummer Chad Smith revealed in a recent interview with Clash Music, this next move will include a new studio album in 2010.

“We’re gonna write for a while, it usually takes us a while,” explained Smith before speculating that the release date would be “Some time next year, maybe this time [next year].”

Frightened Rabbit Returns With Highly Anticipated Third LP

Having topped myriad "Best Of" lists in 2008 with their widely acclaimed sophomore album, "The Midnight Organ Fight," Glasgow's Frightened Rabbit returns with their anticipated third album, "The Winter Of Mixed Drinks." The follow-up to their breakthrough LP will be released worldwide in March 2010 on FatCat Records. The record's first taste, "Swim Until You Can't See Land," is streaming now via FatCat's website and will be digitally released November 17th, followed by a 7-inch b/w "Fun Stuff" on December 8th.

The Rabbit's jangly, anthemic sophomore album earned them critical adoration; among those bestowing it with best-of-the-year laurels were Village Voice's Pazz & Jop Poll, The Onion, Magnet, and Pitchfork, who also designated album opener, "The Modern Leper," one of "The Best Tracks of 2008" as well as one of its "Top 500 Tracks of the 2000s." Upon its unveiling, the foursome's newest offering, "Swim Until You Can't See Land," made instant waves online, with RollingStone.com gushing: "We suggest you find a quiet spot this afternoon, turn your desk speakers up and drink it all in."

Following an exciting but exhausting year, lead Rabbit Scott Hutchison retreated to the harbor town of Crail, along Scotland's Fyfe coastline, and was inspired to pen "Swim," an undeniably catchy song about "losing your mind in order to rest the mind and the body." The track, buoyed by chiming guitars and a shuffling beat, builds and swells as it progresses, bolstered by a sweeping string arrangement courtesy of fellow FatCat artist Hauschka.

According to Hutchison, "Swim" is the natural lead-in to the album: "It's the one that sort of sums up the record for me," he reveals. "I had the song's title in my mind before I even started writing the album; I was becoming more and more interested in the idea of a rejection of the habits and behavior most people see as normal, and in turn embracing a certain madness. This is not necessarily a geographical journey, as the 'swim' can involve any activity in which you can lose yourself. It's a good introduction to the record as the theme unravels therein."

Nautical references continue throughout the album, interwoven among recurring themes of wearied endurance, recaptured freedom, and redemption. "Thematically, this record had to be different from the last," explains Hutchison. "Nobody wanted to hear more break-up songs, and thankfully, I no longer had any in me."

While a failed relationship may not be the centerpiece of this new collection, the songs retain some of the solemnity of previous efforts. "I think even the most upbeat moments on the record are conveyed in somewhat dark language," Hutchison admits.

Frightened Rabbit will be touring the UK through the end of the year, with a string of headlining gigs followed by a weeklong run in Ireland and England with Modest Mouse.

A full North American tour is planned for the album's release.

Jesse Malin finds new label, readies new album

Jesse Malin, aka the former frontman of legendary punk outfits Heart Attack and D Generation who is now an acclaimed singer/songwriter as well as a friend of Bruce Springsteen and Ryan Adams, has been signed by Side One Dummy Records. This is particularly big news because Malin has already begun work on his first release for the label and is currently held up at at Sonic Youth’s Think Tank Studio in Hoboken, NJ with producer Ted Hutt (The Gaslight Anthem, Lucero, Flogging Molly).

According to an issued press release, the yet-to-be-titled effort was written after a personality crisis and brief hiatus during which Malin attempted-among other things-stints as a charity auctioneer; a Las Vegas wedding DJ; and a documentarian of Rastafarian culture. But none of that, as Malin explains, has taken away from his one-of-a-kind intensity: “I wanted to mix the raw, loose energy that I got from playing in my early hardcore bands and the lonely feeling I get from traveling with an acoustic guitar.”

Expect to hear the album in early 2010, with many tour dates to follow.
