The album, 'History of Modern,' will be released by 100% Records on September 20th in the U.K. and by Bright Antenna on September 28th in the US. The record’s artwork was created by legendary Factory Records designer Peter Saville, who designed all of the band’s record sleeves from their 1979 debut single, “Electricity,” to 1984’s Junk Culture full-length. The album will also be available as a limited-edition, Saville-designed embossed boxset, which will include the album on two heavyweight slabs of vinyl, a picture book, an artwork print, a DVD on making the album, and a Saville-designed T-shirt.

Dunes Announce "Old Souls" 7", Launch Tour
Art Fag Recordings presents Dune's limited edition "Old Souls" 7" vinyl record which will be available on August 31st. Pressed in an edition of 500 vinyl records, "Old Souls" features all exclusive unreleased tracks. Additionally, the digital version of the EP will include the washed out bonus track "Lemon Drop You."
Dunes is an LA-based trio, who bend timeless, ornate darkness into new and forlorn forms. The three artists have deconstructed the classic instrumental set up and rebuilt from the drums up, creating tools for their own dreamy vision of pop. Their inspiration forms itself in themes from outside forces to inner balance. Though serious in musical intentions, they do bring a fun and kinetic element to their live performances.

VALUABLE VINYL
Here's a neat article from across the pond:
By Adam Edwards
IT must be catalogued, in mint condition and great care should be taken with its handling. the picture on the face must not be damaged and it should be kept in a clear, see-through envelope. the rarer it is the more it is worth and unlike most antiquities a flawed example can be more valuable than the perfect original.
And no, we’re not talking about stamp collecting. today those who once might have steamed off the one- inch gummed square from an envelope or attended a weekend market to swap their twosomes and threesomes are nowadays more interested in seven or 12 inches of black plastic, known collectively as vinyl.
For collecting old pop singles and albums is, if you’ll excuse the cliché, the new rock and roll. this month 991.com, the world’s biggest dealers in collectable records, reported a 15 per cent increase in sales in the past trading year. the online operation of the British-based company has racked up sales of £50 million.
“We’ve seen an increase in sales of collectible stock all over the UK and abroad, especially in the USA and Japan,” said managing director Rob Croydon who nowaday s employs 40 people at the company’s HQ in Meopham, Kent. “A mint copy of a scarce single for example can be worth more than its weight in gold.”
This boom in vinyl has in turn seen a need for turntables. this week tesco announced that sales of its turntables have doubled every month since they started selling them in May. “Vinyl gives us something that downloads can’t – it is more tangible, you can keep it and collect it,” said Matt Finch of tesco. Collecting records for the baby-boomer generation was for a large majority an essential part of their early lives. In their teens and 20s when pop and rock music blossomed they bought the music by their favourite singers and bands on 45s and long players and spun them on their gramophones, Dansettes and hi-fi systems. Keeping a collection of the plastic discs (and frequently cataloguing them) was as important as shrinking one’s blue jeans in the dryer.
The arrival of the compact disc in the early Eighties spelled the end of vinyl. CD players replaced stereo systems and record collections disappeared into attics, charity shops and skips. A few of the obsessed kept their collections but most were switching their favourite sounds to CD.
And yet the arrival of the iPod/MP3 player and the downloading of music at the beginning of this century brought a surprising sea change – suddenly vinyl was back and it was cool. “When CDs and then down- loading music came along they offered more convenience and they seemed an exciting alternative,” said 42-year-old Jean Paul Cuesta-Vayon, who runs the Vinyl Junkies shop in Soho, central London.
“But as time has gone by music lovers have come back to the more lasting appeal of vinyl. You can’t beat records, they are not just more tactile and boast superior sound quality but they have wonderful art work.”
The result of this nostalgic return to the platter is that records have become highly collectable. And while the appeal of vinyl crosses all types of music from jazz to hip-hop it is the singers and groups with international appeal that have stood the test of time and which are the blue-chip investments. It is their records that in mint condition can be worth serious money.
Heading the list of collectable records are those by the Beatles.
Other bands whose rare discs are worth looking out for are the Rolling Stones, the Who, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Queen and the Smiths. Record Collector magazine puts the first 10 numbered copies of the Beatles’ White Album as some of the most collectable records, each worth around £25,000 and possibly more. Other rarities include the Beatles’ single Please Please Me signed by all four members of the band that recently sold for £7,000, and Queen’s anniversary pressing of Bohemian Rhapsody in blue vinyl valued at around £3,000.
Professional collectors claim the rarest record – if it actually exists and came up for sale and its provenance could be checked – would be the Double Fantasy album by John Lennon and Yoko Ono allegedly autographed by Lennon five hours before Mark David Chapman assassinated him in 1980. If it went to auction it would sell for hundreds of thousands of pounds. So would that’ll Be the Day recorded by the Quarrymen in 1958 before three of them went on to form the Beatles. Sir Paul McCartney owns the only known copy. And then there is Bob Dylan’s the Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, a very rare stereo copy of the album featuring four tracks deleted from all subsequent releases and worth six figures.
These one-offs are so rare they are museum pieces. For most of us it is a case of searching car boot sales, charity shops and eBay to find the bargain album that may be worth a few hundred pounds.
“Seven or eight years ago vinyl was dead as a format,” says Rob Croydon.
“Nowadays it is not only cool but collectable – rare records can be worth a lot of money. And unlike stocks and shares which have had a pretty unsettled time over the past couple of years, the collectable vinyl market is stable.”
According to Rob fi rst pressings are the most valuable as they were produced in small numbers before the record became a hit. Early demos, press copies and limited exports are also sought after.
Other things that make a record worth money are whether or not it was a commercial release or simply produced as a promotional record, whether it was recorded in stereo or mono and if it had any photographs or inserts and if so that they are still intact.
Most importantly however is rarity and how it has been looked after, just like a Penny Black stamp in fact. That was once produced in its thousands and yet today in mint condition it can fetch as much as £500,000. It’s very possible that they will one day be saying the same about vinyl.

Pearl Jam headlined the closing night of Lollapalooza in Chicago in 2007. During the show, lyrics criticizing President Bush are censored from a live webcast by AT&T Inc. The lines are cut from a rendition of "Daughter" (with a part to the tune of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick In The Wall") include "George Bush, leave this world alone," the second time it was sung, and "George Bush find yourself another home." Days later AT&T says they made a mistake (no kidding). Following the incident Pearl Jam posts a notice. "This troubles us . . . as citizens concerned with the issue of censorship and the increasingly consolidated control of the media," writes the band. They also promise to “work harder to ensure live broadcasts or webcasts are ‘free from arbitrary edits’."
The "Songs For Tibet" compilation was released in 2008. Featuring Rush and Sting, the acoustic album sends "a musical message of support to Tibet and the Dalai Lama" to coincide with the Summer Olympics in Beijing. Proceeds go to Art of Peace Foundation and projects championed by the Dalai Lama.
Experience Hendrix, a DVD with footage from a pair of ’02 all-star Jimi Hendrix tribute concerts, was in stores in 2008. Filmed in San Diego and Seattle, the 17 song set includes performances by Kenny Wayne Shepherd & Double Trouble ("Voodoo Chile"), Pearl Jam's Mike McCready, Living Colour ("Crosstown Traffic") and former Hendrix bandmates Mitch Mitchell, Billy Cox and Buddy Miles.
Aerosmith's Steven Tyler suffered serious injuries when he falls off a catwalk during the band's concert at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota in 2009. Tyler was airlifted to a hospital for treatment. He has a broken shoulder, gashes in his back and his head needs stitches. With Tyler on the mend, Aerosmith pulls the plug on the remaining dates. "Words can't express the sadness I feel for having to cancel this tour," says guitarist Joe Perry. "We hope we can get the Aerosmith machine up and running again as soon as possible."
In 2009, a 53-year-old who claimed he was secretly engaged to Miley Cyrus was charged with trying to stalk the US singer. Mark McLeod was arrested after trying to contact the Hannah Montana actress on a film set near Savannah, Georgia. McLeod claimed he had met Cyrus 18 months earlier and that she had accepted his marriage proposal. He told police that Cyrus' father, country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, approved of their relationship and that Cyrus had sent him "secret messages" through her TV show.

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne
FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 2, 2010
DEAR JERRY: There are two different instrumental versions of “Cast Your Fate to the Wind,” both quite popular in the 1960s.
The differences between them are so slight that I can never tell which one is being played (I listen to a jazz channel without dee jays). They both feature a piano.
Who does these? Is there any way to put into words how to identify which is which?
—Jolene Boyd, Milwaukee
DEAR JOLENE: With these recordings being so similar, knowing which one you are hearing can be a challenge, but I found one way.
The first release of “Cast Your Fate to the Wind” came out in late 1962, by the Vince Guaraldi Trio (Fantasy 563). Guaraldi, who wrote the song and plays piano, is accompanied by Monte Budwig (bass) and Colin Bailey (drums). Those are the only instruments used.
In 1964, UK-Pye record producer John Schroeder assembled a British trio in the Guaraldi mold. Named Sounds Orchestral, they feature Johnny Pearson (piano), Kenny Clare (drums), and Tony Reeves (bass).
But unlike the Vince Guaraldi Trio, this threesome is not alone. Sounds Orchestral also included, of all things, orchestral sounds — which makes it easy to distinguish this “Cast Your Fate to the Wind” from the other.
This is most apparent on the Sounds Orchestral track by the string section, with violins especially prominent around the 1:24 mark.
After ranking among the Top 5 hits in England, their U.S. single (Parkway 942) nearly did as well, landing in the Top 10. Worldwide sales eventually topped one million, earning these Brits a gold record.
When Sounds Orchestral entered the Billboard Top 10, May 8, 1965, with “Cast Your Fate to the Wind,” they gave British Commonwealth artists an unprecedented 90% of the Top 10. Only “Count Me In,” by Gary Lewis and the Playboys, saved the U.S. from being counted out:
1. “Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter” (Herman's Hermits).
2. “Count Me In” (Gary Lewis and the Playboys).
3. “Ticket to Ride” (Beatles).
4. “Game of Love” (Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders).
5. “I'll Never Find Another You” (Seekers).
6. “I Know a Place” (Petula Clark).
7. “Silhouettes” (Herman's Hermits).
8. “I'm Telling You Now” (Freddie and the Dreamers).
9. “The Last Time” (Rolling Stones).
10. “Cast Your Fate to the Wind” (Sounds Orchestral).
One week earlier, Cash Box also showed Gary Lewis as the only American artist in their Top 10; however, the other nine differed slightly from the Billboard survey above.
“Tired of Waiting for You” and “Go Now” are still hanging around though “Cast Your Fate to the Wind” and “Silhouettes” will replace them a week later:
1. “Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter” (Herman's Hermits).
2. “I Know a Place” (Petula Clark).
3. “Game of Love” (Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders).
4. “I'm Telling You Now” (Freddie and the Dreamers).
5. “Tired of Waiting for You” (Kinks).
6. “Count Me In” (Gary Lewis and the Playboys).
7. “I'll Never Find Another You” (Seekers).
8. “Go Now” (Moody Blues).
9. “Ticket to Ride” (Beatles).
10. “The Last Time” (Rolling Stones).
IZ ZAT SO? In the 14 years from 1950 through 1963, only four British artists topped the U.S. charts. They include one female and one male vocal, and two instrumentals: Vera Lynn (“Auf Wiederseh'n Sweetheart”) (1952); Laurie London (“He's Got the Whole World in His Hands”) (1958); Mr. Acker Bilk (“Stranger on the Shore”) (1962); and the Tornadoes (“Telstar”) (1962).
Then came 1964.
During the last six years of the decade, 40 British acts reached No. 1 in the U.S. Nearly half of those (18) are by the Beatles. None are instrumentals.
Now you know why they call it the British Invasion!

VINYL FORMAT. Limited to 5000 copies; on 180 gram vinyl triple gatefold! 'Releasing a compilation of acoustic material to mark the twentieth anniversary of their mutli-platinum selling debut Shake Your Money Maker, the Black Crowes - America's most viable rock 'n' roll band - are leaving fans with Croweology, the last piece of studio material before embarking on an extended hiatus in 2011. Recorded in Sunset Sound Studios in Los Angeles, California and produced by Paul Stacey, the collection of unreleased material, fan favorites and classics serves as an intimate portrait into the creative aspiration of the brothers Robinson. "Jealous Again," starts the recording in a pretty straight forward manner before "Share the Ride," off the 1996 release of Three Snakes and One Charm, is altered from its electric fury and transformed into a hand-clapping country romp. "Remedy" remains its traditional locomotive with the vocals of Mona and Charity accompanying the addition of wah-funk. Once the radio singles are off the plate, the oozing cool of the Black Crowes' cosmic-cowboy psychedelic brilliance comes into view. "Nonfiction" goes spacey before a blindsiding version of Southern Harmony's "Hotel Illness." Chris Robinson's harmonica on this track is particularly inspirational. The grass backbone of Luther Dickinson's guitar picking drives the dynamics of the acoustic numbers, while Rich Robinson holds steadfast, fat and firm. "Soul Singing" appears as the only track from the 2001 release of Lions, before the epic combination of "Ballad in Urgency" and a bombastic "Wiser Time" sends the recording into outer-space. But within the classics, there resides an unreleased gem dating back from 2005 and the buried writing sessions following the Black Crowes reunion. A beautiful interlude leads into "Cold Boy Smile" where Chris Robinson's vocals shine.
Disc two shines just as bright. The Shake Your Money Maker single "She Talks to Angels" leads into the first acoustic version of the colossal "My Morning Song." The foundation of Rich Robinson's lick acoustically is very similar to the Open-G blues pull of Jimmy Page's interpretation of "Traveling Riverside Blues," complete with the three-note walk-down. The band breaks the shed during the reprise with hand-claps and a sizzling piano. The sermon in the church of rock 'n' roll is full-blown. The moment in which the band returns to the chorus is a slice of salvation, bringing the faithless to their knees. "Downtown Money Waster" includes Appalachian fiddles and a burning banjo before opening up with the melancholy of "Good Friday." Luther Dickinson walks away with the leads on this number. "Thorn in My Pride," the By Your Side gem "Welcome to the Goodtimes" and "Girl from a Pawnshop" round out the mix. Croweology is capped with ballads starting with a Gram Parson's cover of "She." For Chris Robinson, Gram Parsons and the Flying Burrito Brothers 68-70 have been a common thread that has permeated his artistic influence throughout his catalog of the Black Crowes and his solo projects as well. A sorrowful "Bad Luck Blue Eyes" bids farewell to the bad boys of American rock 'n' roll, at least for now.' - Martin Halo / TheWaster.com

VINYL FORMAT. This limited DELUXE EDITION features the album spread out over four 180 gram pieces of vinyl, mastered at 45 RPM! "Reload is Metallica's second experimental album and it's meant to be the ideal follow up to Load. But I consider them as twins, as a double CD, since these two albums have the same sound, similar covers, identical artwork and even similar disposition of the tracks . . . The opening single 'Fuel' has become a true classic. I think it's Metallica's most innovative song: speed riffs, impeccable guitar work, excellent backing vocals, powerful chorus and amazing drums. Lyrics deal with high speed, fuel, fire, gasoline, engines, adrenaline . . . The third track has a slow evil rhythm and great demoniac effects: Kirk's guitar sounds like a howling cat! Really good. On the following track, a familiar horn intro brings us six years back: another 'Unforgiven'! This single is one of my favorite songs of all time. This one is played on a special Fender Telecaster that gives it an amazing sound. All guitars are perfectly harmonized and effected. As in the first 'Unforgiven,' there are some strings before the chorus. 'The Unforgiven II' shares some elements with the first version: the horn intro, the main guitar melody [now in the background] and the lines "What I've felt, what I've known," "So I dub thee unforgiven," "Never free, never me." But it is totally different from 'The Unforgiven': it has a different mood, it is more open, it is a true heavy ballad." - Metalstorm.net

VINYL FORMAT. 'Disconnect from Desire, the eagerly anticipated sophomore album from Brooklyn's dreamscape "nu-gaze" trio School of Seven Bells, was produced by the band's Benjamin Curtis and was recorded in their home studio. Heavily influenced by the pioneering 80's band The Cocteau Twins, Curtis and twin sisters Alejandra and Claudia Deheza created densely textured, atmospheric aural excursions for their acclaimed debut 2008 Alpinisms, a sound that the band expands upon with Desire. "We realized something else about our music," reflects Curtis, "which is that there's this heavy quality to it, this powerful quality that we weren't really aware of because we were just writing at home. Going out and playing every night and discovering that, we got really inspired." Lead track "Babelonia" mixes mesmerizing electronic rhythms, Curtis' chiming two-chord guitar riffs and the Deheza's ethereal vocals for a stiff elixir of propulsive power, a sound that straddles gracefully lithe motion and arena-sized aural fireworks. New single "Windstorm" has a sweeping, cinematic scope, near-chanting vocals building and intertwining with buzzing synths and darting guitar lines. "From the start, we knew we wanted to make a record that connected on more of a direct and personal level than we ever had before," says Curtis. "It's a complete account of our lives this past year, and it's crazy how taking an honest look at yourself can tell you the most about the world around you."' - Direct Current Music

VINYL FORMAT. 'Wavves returns with a new album this summer. After all the fuss of the last couple of years, it's great to see Nathan Williams and co. getting back to showing us the fruits of his studio work. The album is called King of the Beach . . . Unlike Wavves' previously released material, recorded in haphazard bursts on Williams' laptop, King of the Beach was toiled over for three months at Sweet Tea Recording, a world-renowned studio in Oxford, Mississippi. Sweet Tea is also the home of Dennis Herring, producer of the last two Modest Mouse albums, and the man who dismantled and re-assembled the sound on this record. "There was a conscious effort going into this that I didn't want to make the same record again. I already made the same record twice, with the same fucking cover art," says Williams. "It wasn't overbearing, but I didn't want to recreate something I'd done. I wanted to make something bigger, something stronger." Although you may think King of the Beach is somewhat appropriately titled, Williams says the album name isn't meant to be ironic or a self-deprecating joke. It's a declaration. "Without sounding cheesy, we all wanted to make something inspiring," says Williams. "It's the type of thing where you have this much, but you could have more, so go get it." We get the feeling this is going to be one hell of a comeback album.' - Gavin Riley / Strange Glue

U.S. CHRISTMAS Reveal Cover Art
Neurot Recordings is proud to unleash the latest full-length from psychedelic, high-volume blues rock ensemble U.S. CHRISTMAS. Entitled Run Thick In The Night, the band’s fifth long player was recorded by Sanford Parker at Fahrenheit Studio in Johnson City, Tennessee, mixed by Parker and USX members Nate Hall, Matt Johnson and Josh Holt at Semaphore Studios in Chicago, IL and mastered by Collin Jordan.
Hailing from the Appalachian Mountains in Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee, U.S. CHRISTMAS create a kaleidoscopic brand of sound that evades easy classification. Founded in Marion, North Carolina in the summer of 2002, the band played rough biker bars, art spaces, and house shows all over the southeast dirt circuit for years, self-releasing albums in rough CDR format. Scott Kelly of Neurosis heard the band’s third record, Salt The Wound (released in Russia by the label RAIG) through his show on Combat Music Radio/KMBT, which inevitably lead to the release of the band’s fourth album Eat The Low Dogs on Neurot Recordings.
‘Run Thick In The Night’ will be released via Neurot Recordings on September 20, 2010.

Spin Clean Record Washer Announces New Web Site Launch.

Anyone who has used the conventional brush type record cleaner knows how awkward they are to use and that they have limited ability. The Spin-Clean® record washing system enables you to clean both sides of your record at once without using your valuable turntable as the cleaning device. With the Spin-Clean® record washing system, you'll add years to all of your equipment including turntables, stylus (needle) and of course your record collection. The Spin-Clean Record Washing System is a unique approach to wet cleaning records.
Spin-Clean® Record Washing System's secret weapon is it's special washer fluid. This formula encapsulates the dirt and keeps it suspended in the system instead of evaporating or redepositing it back on to your valuable record. Only Spin-Clean® record washing system uses this secret formula.
With Spin-Clean® record washing system, it's easy as one, two, three, fill it – spin it – dry it. You never have to adjust the brushes (they're pre-set at the right pressure). After three turns in the Spin-Clean® record washing system, the dirt and the fingerprints are gone on both sides of the record along with the static. You not only see the Spin-Clean® record washing system work, you can hear the difference in sound.
Most remarkably though, is the sound when playing the cleaned records. Spin Clean removes fingerprints, grease, smoke, film and dirt from any size record:, 45s, LPs & 78s. it also removes the static from your record as it is cleaned.
Spin clean has been around helping improve the sound of records since 1975.
You can visit the new Spin Clean website at http://www.spincleanrecordwasher.com/ and check out their new product line.
Note: I will be contacting Spin Clean and try their product and write up a review. Watch the blog for this upcoming material!
