Helmet - Seeing Eye Dog (vinyl)

On 180 gram vinyl; comes with a digital download! The second LP contains the live album Live at Warped Tour San Francisco July 8, 2006, featuring nine tracks. Seeing Eye Dog, Helmet's seventh album, is one of the band's most uncompromising and ambitious releases, embodying the classic and utterly unique Helmet sound and pushing it into regions the band has never before explored. One big reason for that spirit of musical adventure is the record is essentially self-released (through the Work Song label). "I just felt completely free to do whatever I wanted to do," says frontman Page Hamilton. "It was really fun to make this record because I just felt this. . . freedom." Freedom can also arise from limitation, something Hamilton knows well - as ever, he insisted on having few overdubs and edits on Seeing Eye Dog. "This album is human and honest," he declares. "People have always commented that we sound like our albums live, and our recording approach has a lot to do with that. Humans playing music will always be better than chop-shop rock." Besides Hamilton, the humans on Seeing Eye Dog include drummer Kyle Stevenson, who joined Helmet in 2006, guitarist Dan Beeman, who's been on board since 2008, and long-time Helmet bassist Chris Traynor (Dave Case is the band's touring bassist). The album was produced by Hamilton, with additional production by Toshi Kasai (Melvins) and vocal production by Mark Renk.

The trio is looking to spread their gospel of hook-stuffed, melody rich pop to the world at large. Beatles and Brit pop influences abound on Everything, and the band provides a nod to those influences with their attention to filling the album with great songs beginning to end, not building an album around just a few great tracks.

Venetian Snares - My So-Called Life

A lesson in mutant jungle, My So-Called Life rips up the taste and decency rulebook and mashes up ten songs in the characteristic style of breakcore king Venetian Snares (aka Aaron Funk). "Posers with Camera Phones" sets the standard: Melody? Check. Jungle breaks? Check. Tongue-in-cheek offensive sample? Check. "Aaron2" shows Funk's love of the old school with crazy hoovers. Other tracks like "Welfare Wednesday" are straight-up fun with lyrics that make one laugh or cry. "Hajnal2" works one of Funk's best-known tracks from one of his bestselling albums, Rossz Csillag Alatt Szueletett. The title track closes My So-Called Life with melancholy strings that leave the listener craving more. For fans of drum 'n' bass, breakcore, jungle, old school, rave or good music in general - this one's for you.

This from Blabbermouth.net, the continuing saga of Aerosmith:

PERRY: I'm Not Going To Sit Around For Two Years Waiting For TYLER To Come Back To AEROSMITH

The Calgary Herald conducted an interview with AEROSMITH guitarist Joe Perry ahead of the band's September 10, 2010 appearance at the Pengrowth Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

On when fans will have a chance to see the Boston hard rock band in action again:

"Technically speaking, after the gig in Vancouver (on Sept. 16), I don't have a job with AEROSMITH. We know these are the last shows for awhile. And I really do mean awhile. I don't know when we'll be out there again, the five of us, so we'll be playing with everything we've got."

On learning through the media that singer Steven Tyler was up for a second job as a judge on the reality TV singing competition "American Idol":

"(The whole group) sat down not too long ago, when we decided to do this tour, and we basically laid out plans for the next two years. And when you're sitting there talking about that and one of the band members knows full well he's signed a contract that's taking him out of the music business for up to seven months of the year — that kind of throws a wrench into things . . . It's all very well to say, 'I'm going to go off and do this and it won't interfere with the band . . .' but there's only so many weeks in the month and so many months in the year."

On what Perry and the rest of AEROSMITH plans to do while Tyler gets busy on the side with a variety of projects, including "American Idol" and his long-awaited autobiography:

"I'm not going to sit around for two years waiting for him to come back to AEROSMITH. (You've got) four guys that are great together, and if you find the right singer, there's no reason you can't go and entertain people."

On the incident at AEROSMITH's Toronto show at Air Canada Centre where Tyler hip-checked Perry and Perry responded with a bump of his own, causing Tyler to lose his balance, falling from the stage:

"He's got this thing in his head that it's cool when the guys in the band bump into each other. Nobody else in the band feels that way. . . . Leave me alone when I'm playing."

On his thoughts on "American Idol":

"It's a reality show designed to get people to watch that station and sell advertising. It's one step above ('Teenage Mutant') 'Ninja Turtles'.

"I'll tell you one thing, when we put this band together, this is not something that (Steven Tyler) would do.

"It's his business, but I don't want AEROSMITH's name involved with it. We have nothing to do with it."

How and Where to Sell Old Phonograph Records

This is a great article and explains that what you think your records may be worth, get a reality check, just because the recorda may be old, doesn't make them valuable, someone has to WANT them!

How and Where to Sell Old Phonograph Records

By Robert Hess

Have you studied your ABCs lately--that is Attics, Basements and Closets? They could yield up some extra money and free up some valuable space in your home for other uses. LPs (long-playing 10 and 12 inch discs, playing at 33 1/3 revolutions per minute), 78s (easily breakable discs, playing at 78 revolutions per minute with one tune on each side) and 45s(7 inch discs playing at 45 revolutions per minute) may be valuable.

Record collecting as a hobby is just beginning to grow after many other collectibles have been prominently featured in antique stores and the media. It is not an expensive hobby to establish, but disposing of them can be expensive in many ways.

HOW DO YOU RECOGNIZE VALUE

Many people think that just because a record is old that it has great value. Very few records have any real value to collectors or dealers. Value is based on a combination of three factors -

(1) Supply and demand. How available is the record? If millions were initially sold it is likely that many will turn up in thrift shops, used record stores and in many homes. The scarcity factor must be present. There must be a demand for that record because of the artist performing (e.g. a major talent who died young and before being able to make many records), the label on which it was recorded (the original recording as distinguished from a "reissue"), or an oddity concerning the record(e.g. a V-disc, wartime government recording or aircheck-taken from a radio broadcast, an original picture disc or a 10-inch LP). The scarcity factor can also be affected by whether a record is "out-of-print"(no longer available from the manufacturer) thereby decreasing the supply. "Bootlegs" (records illegally produced from live concerts or broadcasts) are also valuable to collectors.

(2) Condition of the record. Those with surface noises and scratches will be of little or no value. If it is in "mint" condition (perfect) or "near mint" condition it will have the highest possible value. A record in "very good" condition should not have any distorted sounds or loss of sound quality. "Good" means it may have some imperfections, but can be readily enjoyed. "Fair" means it can play, but will have obvious sound impairment and detract from your enjoyment and the value of the record. Some dealers may have a slightly different grading scale.

(3) Content of the recording. Generally speaking there is more interest in music than in spoken word or comedy records and the value therefor would be greater. Certain kinds of musical recordings bring high sales prices. Jazz, original Broadway cast and movie soundtracks tend to provide a more active market and greater value. Also early rhythm and blues records and the doowop sound are also highly valued and collectible. Among classical records the most valuable are orchestral performances, then solo instrumental, chamber music and concertos and solo vocal and operatic arias and finally complete operas. To some collectors, whether a record is mono or stereo affects the value. Recently a market began developing for rock records of early vintage, especially those of deceased cult figures such as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison. Also, brisk trading now occurs among collectors of 45s, especially among the 1950s rhythm and blues and early rock artists. Great interest maintains in rare and unusual (foreign issues, etc.) in Elvis and the Beatles. However, most of their records have little value because so many were produced without any distinguishing characteristics. In other words they were all the same.

WHO WILL BUY YOUR RECORDS?

Records are purchased by collectors, mail order dealers, used records stores and the general public, sometimes on a nostalgic impulse or because of a favorite artist. For truly rare records the best prices will come from dealers who know the market and for how much they can resell them. Collectors are emotional and sometimes fanatical collecting their specialties. They may pay top prices for particular idiosyncracies. It is unusual to get top dollar for a rare record from the "general public', where only the performance value is recognized, not the resale or trading value. Painstaking research and knowledge of the record industry and its artists is required to determine the value of a particular recording. It may be possible to determine a value for a "rare" record once you have determined that it is truly rare.

WHAT WILL THEY PAY?

Most records that are not "rare" can bring only pennies - 25 cents to a dollar - from dealers. The "general public" may pay $1 or $2. Rare records can bring from $25 to the thousands. There are a number of price guides published, but values indicated are generally highly inflated or based on an isolated sale. Obviously, collectors and dealers want to read that records can bring high prices. Remember, value rests in the mind of the buyer.

HOW DO YOU FIND A BUYER?

A buyer for every record you wish to sell probably exists somewhere in the world. How to find that person is a big problem. It is not uncommon for people to discover old records in their homes and proceed to spend many dollars (far in excess of the eventual e record) and untold hours in pursuit of a buyer. It can become very frustrating and sometimes obsessive. Expectations almost always exceed reality.

Records can be sold by advertising - in local classifieds or collectors' publications, by selling to local used record stores, selling at flea markets or bazaars or by promoting a garage sale. Start by cataloging the records. List the artist, the title of the record, LP, 45 or 78rpm, the record catalog number and its condition. Take the list to a record librarian and some used record stores for offers and indications as to rarity. Talk to friends and associates.

Selling involves prospective buyers visiting your home. Or, you may have to pack and cart the records to a store for a price quote and no sale. Damage in transit can make them worthless. Out-of-town prospects requires mail correspondence, packing, insurance, carting to the post office, placing postage and sending C.O.D. The buyer may refuse to accept upon receipt.

They Are Missed:

Mathis James "Jimmy" Reed (September 6, 1925 - August 29, 1976) was a blues musician and songwriter most notable for bringing his distinctive style of blues to mainstream audiences. Reed was a major player in the field of electric blues, as opposed to the more acoustic-based sound of many of his contemporaries. His lazy, slack-jawed singing, piercing harmonica and hypnotic guitar patterns were one of the blues' most easily identifiable sounds in the 1950s and 1960s

Record producer Tom Wilson died in 1978. He worked with various acts including Bob Dylan, (The Times They Are a-Changin', Another Side of Bob Dylan, and Bringing It All Back Home), Frank Zappa, (Freak Out!), Simon and Garfunkel (Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.) and The Velvet Underground, (White Light/White Heat).

Tom Fogerty, guitarist with Creedence Clearwater Revival, died in 1990 (age 49), due to complications from AIDS acquired during a blood transfusion. During 1969 CCR scored three US Top Ten albums and four Top 5 singles. Released several solo albums.

English keyboard player Nicky Hopkins died in 1994 (age 50), in Nashville, Tennessee, of complications from intestinal surgery. Was a highly respected session musician, worked with The Rolling Stones, Jeff Beck, The Beatles, The Who, The Kinks, Small Faces, Led Zeppelin, John Lennon, George Harrison, and the Jerry Garcia Band. The Kinks song ‘Session Man’ from Face to Face is dedicated to (and features) Hopkins.

History:

"The Biggest Show of Stars for 1957" launched in Pittsburgh in 1957. The bill included Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, The Everly Brothers and Frankie Lyman & the Teenagers. Due to Southern segregation laws, white performers were forbidden from playing on the same stage as African-Americans, so they miss several dates.

Bob Dylan debuted at the Gaslight Cafe in New York City in 1961.

Jerry Lee Lewis' contract with Sun Records expired in 1963 (he signed with Mercury).

Cilla Black signed a management contract with Beatles manager Brian Epstein in 1963. Cilla changed her name to Black, (it was white), after a misprint in the music paper 'Mersey Beat.

John Lennon began filming his role as Private Gripeweed for 'How I Won The War' in 1966. The film was directed by Richard Lester who also directed "A Hard Day’s Night" and "Help!"

Working at Abbey Road studio’s in London in 1968, the Beatles recoded overdubs onto the new George Harrison song "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." Eric Clapton added the guitar solo and became the first outside musician to play on a Beatles recording and George recorded his lead vocal.

In 1969, James Brown announced he would retire from live performances in July the following year saying 'I'm tired man'.

In 1970, Jimi Hendrix made his final live appearance when he appeared at the Isle Of Fehmarn in Germany. The guitarist died on Sept 18, 1970.

1974, The 101 All Stars (featuring Joe Strummer), made their debut at The Telegraph, Brixton Hill, London in 1974.

George Harrison launched his Dark Horse record label in 1974. "The Place I Love" by Splinter was the first release.

Glen Campbell started a two week run at #1 on the US singles chart in 1975 with "Rhinestone Cowboy," his first #1 after 13 Top 40 hits.

Jefferson Starship went to #1 on the US album chart in 1975 with 'Red Octopus.'

All girl group Bananarama went to #1 on the US singles chart in 1986 with "Venus," the song had also been a #1 for Dutch group Shocking Blue in 1970.

2,000 items of Elton John’s personal memorabilia including his boa feathers, 'Pinball Wizard' boots and hundreds of pairs of spectacles were auctioned at Sotheby’s in London in 1988.

In 1989, the Pittsburgh Steelers were banned from practicing on their own field, Three Rivers Stadium, because The Rolling Stones were rehearsing for their upcoming concert.

The blaze began at The Station nightclub in the state of Rhode Island in 2003 when the band's tour manager shot off pyrotechnics at the start of the concert. More than 200 people were also injured in the blaze. One band member, guitarist Ty Longley, was killed in the fire. Tour manager Daniel Biechele pleaded guilty in 2006 to 100 counts of involuntary manslaughter and was given parole in March after serving less than half of his four-year prison sentence.

Boston Pop/rock Sensation One Step Away Releases New Full Length Studio Album: "For The Broken"

Boston Pop/Rock Sensation One Step Away delivers release of a new full length studio album: "For The Broken." They head back home after a summer of nationwide shows for their CD Release Show at Hard Rock Cafe Boston September 19, 2010, 5-7pm.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

One Step Away: Healy,Carrington,Trudeau,Nuzzolo
PRLog (Press Release) – Sep 04, 2010 – It has been a busy summer for the Boston Pop/Rock sensation One Step Away with many days spent away from home in the recording studio and on their promotional tour. Their new full length studio album: “For the Broken” is the result of several prior months of songwriting, juggled amidst demanding schedules which included school, sports, jobs , practices and peformances. One Step Away is comprised of Terence Healy (Lead Guitar), Adam Carrington (Lead Vocals), Mike Nuzzolo, (Bass & Vocals) and newest member: Ben Trudeau (Drums).

Most of the songs on the album are brand new with only one song "In This Moment", rerecorded from their original EP "One Decision" released in 2008. Guiding their decisions on the album was Executive Producer Dan Malsch and co-producer Alec Henniger both from Soundmine Recording Studios (Framing Hanley, Forever the Sickest Kids, Four Year Strong). One Step Away band members gathered at least three times a week during their busy school year to get input on their songs from their producers over Skype. Starting in June of 2010, as soon as band members finished their school year, they left to stay at the recording studio in the hills of Pennsylvania, where they spent hundreds of hours recording their CD.

Writing all their own songs, One Step Away strays from the majority of young pop artists who generally only write a portion, if any, of their own music. "We write all our own songs from riffs to melodies to lyrics," states Terence 'Tito' Healy, "it is a collaborative effort." Mike Nuzzolo adds, "On our recordings, it is 100% us; our instrumentals and our vocals". This is what makes One Step Away unique -- to be such a young band and able to do it all themselves.

What you get in their new album "For the Broken" is their special authenticity that reaches right down into the souls of what is on the minds of today's youth. There is a constant theme of longing for a special someone and a constant questioning of what lies ahead for them. The name "For the Broken" came from the lyrics of their first track song on the album: "Here We Go,” which has the phrase "lullaby of the broken heart".

Their authentic quality goes right with them to the stage. Sounding surprisingly close to their recordings, and often better, the band stuns many with how much raw talent they have. In live performances their vocals are crystal clear, and instrumentation is tight. This is much to the credit of hard-working Adam Carrington, lead vocalist, who is proud of his vocal studies and likes to talk learning some "opera". Back in his early days with the band, one news reporter asked him of how it was to sing classical and in theater versus with the band. Carrington replied that he enjoys the vocal and stage "freedom" with the band. You can see this in his total entrenchment in the music on the stage while performing with One Step Away. This absorption and focus is seen by all the band members and bales them to perform flawlessly even if their audience is in the thousands. This was put to the test this summer with their big stage performances in venues like Boston Harborfest and Universal Studios Hollywood CityWalk Stage.

Here’s what one reviewer has stated:

“I do know talent and potential when I hear it and this band has it all. I know for a fact there are millions of kids out there that will eat this stuff up. If a major label misses picking up One Step Away they will be kicking themselves in the pants for eternity.” -- from Muzikreviews

On September 19, 2010, One Step Away returns to Hard Rock Café Boston to deliver their CD Release Show at the Hard Rock Cafe in Boston from 5-7pm.

New Orleans' newest record shop opens this weekend with a two-day festival of local music.

Alison Fensterstock

Last month, music fans everywhere were saddened to hear that Fat Beats, the iconic independent hip-hop retailer, would be closing its two remaining stores -- including its 16-year-old New York City flagship -- this week.

The announcement was seen by most as another note in the long requiem for the bricks-and-mortar record shop, a tune that's being played at ever-higher decibel levels since the advent of Napster.

File-sharing, iTunes and rock-bottom prices at online retailers, such as Amazon.com, have taken a big bite out of the music retail market -- not to mention the MP3 player's emergence as the pre-eminent technology for listening. With even major corporate entities, such as Tower Records, throwing in the towel, the idea of opening an independent vinyl shop would seem like a fool's errand and the store itself like a quaint relic of another time -- like the malt shop or general store.

Two newly minted New Orleanians, James Weber and Brian Bromberg, however, are willing to take that gamble.

History:

To coincide with the release of his second Sun single in 1954, "Good Rockin' Tonight," Elvis Presley, along with Bill Black and Scotty Moore made their first appearance at The Grand Old Opry. In 1959, Bobby Darin's "Mack The Knife" was banned by WCBS radio in New York after seveal local stabbings.

The Beatles recorded promotional videos for "Hey Jude" and ‘Revolution’ at Twickenham Film Studios in 1968. The vocals are recorded live over the pre-recorded instrumental tracks to get round the current British Musicians Union ban on lip-sync performances. For "Hey Jude," The Beatles were accompanied by a 36-piece orchestra and 300 fans and other assorted extras who join in singing the long refrain. We DID have MTV back then (except the networks would air it!)

The film 'Easy Rider' starring Jack Nicholson Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper opened at The Classic London in 1969.

In 1986, and after just getting his driving license back after a five-year suspension, Gregg Allman from The Allman Brothers Band was arrested in Florida for drunk driving. Smart....

"It’s great to see the Small Faces being officially recognized at this stage of my life," says Jones. "There’s a sense of reflection, when I think back to everything we did in those days and how the Small Faces was responsible for creating much of the mod music and fashion revolution in the UK." Green Plaques draw attention to... people of renown (from London's Westminster district) who have made lasting contributions to society. The Small Faces plaque is the 73rd unveiled.

Classic Collaboration Reaches New Sonic Heights
by Michael Fremer
September 01, 2010

If you didn’t know who was playing behind the honey-voiced Hartman on “They Say It’s Wonderful,” the opening track of this short, thirty one minute set, you’d probably never guess it was John Coltrane or that Coltrane asked Hartman to collaborate with him and his classic quartet on this mellow, relaxed and relaxing album, all of which was recorded April 7th, 1963.

Well, you’d probably figure out it was Coltrane when he finally solos, but for the most part he stays comfortably in the background and when he steps up to the mike, Hartman’s soothing vibe overtakes him, leading to sublimely graceful lines at the upper registers of his tenor.

It was Coltrane’s only lead turn recording with a vocalist. Hartman, more of a pop crooner than a jazz singer, was apparently hesitant to collaborate with Coltrane, though the two had briefly been in Dizzy Gillespie’s band during the late 1940’s. After seeing the quartet at Birdland, Hartman went for it and after hours at the club they chose and worked out all but one of the tunes.

Everyone lays back: McCoy Tyner’s lines are soft and flowing, Elvin Jones’s brushes softly caress the cymbals and Jimmy Garrison lays back too adding a subtle foundation. This is one hell of a lounge act—had it played one.

Only during the instrumental break on Billy Strayhorn’s “Lush Life” do the quartet’s familiar, muscular musical contours show themselves. It’s the set’s highlight, though there are no low points on this album that quickly became a best-seller (for a jazz album at the time) upon its release.

Rudy Van Gelder’s recording is sympathetic to the musical setting, with Hartman center stage, looming large and just kissed with reverb. Even Tyner’s piano sounds clean and well-textured, while Coltrane and Jones share a channel, with the tenor sax upfront and the drums pushed appropriately behind.

The ORG satiny paper over cardboard packaging is up to their usual high standards and this classic has never sounded better—and I compared it to my orange/black original.

Should you not wish to spend big bucks for the ORG and/or if getting up more times than you do during the night to pee just to hear this short album doesn’t appeal to you, consider the less costly Speakers Corner 33 1/3 reissue. It’s equally well pressed and mastered but from a tape copy and the drop to 33 1/3 takes a bit of a sonic toll particularly in terms of top end immediacy, but you’ll get to sit longer and left over cash to apply another worthwhile reissue.

That said, if you love this album, you won’t regret the extra expenditure or the four times up and down. Hell, if that really bothers you just get the CD and suffer in comfort!

Vinyl Doing Well North Of The Border

I want to thank http://newsdurhamregion.com/ for allowing me the exclusive right to reprint this interesting story.  I love to hear about the virtues of vinyl!

The beat goes on in Durham Region

Vinyl records, once viewed as obsolete, now enjoying a renaissance

Al Rivett and Mike Ruta

The report of my death was an exaggeration. Mark Twain.

OSHAWA -- Longtime Oshawa record dealer Michael Star believed the death knell of the vinyl record was at hand three years ago.

He harks back to 2007, when it seemed almost inevitable the LP (short for long-playing records) was headed for the scrap bin, joining the likes of the long-obsolete eight-track. That year, Mr. Star said, only about 1,500 titles were put out by music companies on vinyl as the corporations continued to reel from sliding compact disc sales and digital downloads, much of which were of the illegal, free variety.

Instead of the death of vinyl, however, the exact opposite transpired.

Steady growth in pressings and sales occurred over the ensuing three years, with Mr. Star noting more than 10,000 titles have been released in the LP format so far this year.

Surprised? Even for the most die-hard of vinyl enthusiasts, it was an astonishing turnaround.

"That shocks me. I can't believe they're making so many," said Mr. Star, whose Star Records has been a fixture in Oshawa for the past 36 years. "I didn't think it would come back, but they're putting them out full blast now.

"I thought in the late 1990s and the early 2000s (the record companies) were going to kill it off, but they didn't for some reason. It just blows me away how many new albums are coming out (on vinyl) each week."

And, it's not just indy bands that have led vinyl's resurgence by putting out their music in the format, said Mr. Star. The super-groups -- from Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, The Doors and The Rolling Stones -- are re-mastering and re-issuing their back catalogues on vinyl.

Many of today's more high-profile bands -- from Them Crooked Vultures to The Foo Fighters -- have also joined the fray and are releasing their latest musical offerings on vinyl. Both groups' albums, said Mr. Star, are among his best sellers.

Why has vinyl records come back so strongly in bucking the trend of digital downloads and compact discs?

Mr. Star said what's old is definitely new again with the music-buying public. The vinyl loyalists have definitely kept the format from disappearing and, now, even the younger generation are buying into vinyl's warm sound.

"I think there are a lot of people who are dedicated to buying vinyl albums and there's the love of collecting certain artists on vinyl. If there's 10 albums by Neil Young (on vinyl), they want to keep buying them."

---

Connor Steele definitely isn't your typical vinyl record collector. He doesn't fit the profile of someone who's a mature adult who has grown up collecting vinyl. He's only 12.

"I like to collect LPs because they're old and they have a lot of meaning to me," said the Brooklin resident, who was browsing over the selection at Star Records with his father one summer afternoon.

"I can keep them forever and I can pass them on to my children. Instead of downloading music, this is the real thing; the quality is better."

Currently, he's got more than 200 LPs and upwards of 450 12-inch singles, mostly in the pop musical genre. His favourite musician is the late Michael Jackson, although he also owns a number of R and B and soul albums.

He's happy vinyl is making a strong comeback among music aficionados.

"I think the LP should be popular again," he said. "For my dad, it brings back a lot of memories looking through his albums."

---

Whitby resident and Lighthouse singer Dan Clancy has around 1,000 albums and says vinyl's popularity is on the upswing.

"There's a resurgence of vinyl in the last three or four years and a lot of the new bands are releasing albums on vinyl first," he says.

Clancy, long before his Lighthouse days, got his first record in one of those pay-a-penny-and-get-your-first-10-albums deals. Ironically, it was Lighthouse's One Fine Morning and for some strange reason he received two copies.

While nostalgia, clinging to the past, might account for the renewed interest in vinyl, at least for older rockers, it doesn't explain why Clancy's son, Devin, 19, a musician himself, has a turntable and records.

"I just think that the state the business is in right now has opened up so many opportunities for musicians," Clancy says. "Everybody's listening to everything."

He notes that "there's a newfound appreciation for the artwork" on albums.

Finally, Clancy says in the case of himself and his son, it's neat to be able to share music he grew up with, and the medium in which it was presented is a major part of the experience.

---

Through the ups and downs of the music retail business, Mr. Star has stayed true to vinyl. He's a throwback, a rebel, with his Oshawa store's front door emblazoned with the Confederate flag.

"I still enjoy music and I have a love for vinyl," he said matter-of-factly. "Once they stop buying music and I stop enjoying music, it will be over. That's just the way it is."
