CTI Records: The Cool Revolution deluxe 4-CD box set available October 12; New 2-CD version of 1971's California Concert: The Hollywood Palladium arrives October 26
Albums from CTI greats George Benson, Ron Carter, Deodato, Freddie Hubbard, Hubert Laws, Stanley Turrentine and more
NEW YORK, Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Masterworks Jazz celebrates the 40th anniversary of CTI Records, the beloved jazz label founded in 1970 by producer Creed Taylor, beginning October 5 with the release of 6 classic CTI titles remastered on CD followed by CTI Records: The Cool Revolution, a deluxe 4-CD multi-artist box set retrospective on October 12. Two weeks later on October 26, the double-CD restoration of California Concert: The Hollywood Palladium (1971) will be released with 90 minutes of music rarely heard and never before available. The 40th anniversary commemoration will also include reissues of 6 more classic CTI albums, plus four collectible vinyl LPs in the coming months.
CTI Records: The Cool Revolution will contain four hour-long-plus discs, each presenting a thematic overview of a particular aspect of CTI: Straight Up Jazz, Deep Grooves/Big Hits, The Brazilian Connection, Cool and Classic. The 39 tracks in the box set – as well as all CTI anniversary edition titles – are remastered for the first time from the original analog 1/4-inch tapes. Reissues producer Richard Seidel and engineers Mark Wilder, Maria Triana and Dave Darlington recapture the rich, distinctive sound of the original LPs achieved by Taylor and original engineer Rudy Van Gelder. CTI Records: The Cool Revolution includes a lavishly illustrated 20-page, LP-sized booklet containing rare photos, plus new liner notes by noted jazz critic Dan Ouellette with comments by CTI artists and enthusiasts.
The 2010 edition of California Concert: The Hollywood Palladium is the most complete version of the historic Hollywood Palladium all-star concert recorded July 18, 1971. It doubles the content of the original five-song LP release with five additional tracks - three of them previously unreleased - and restores the original concert sequence for the first time. Creed Taylor hand-picked a dream team of CTI artists for the occasion: Freddie Hubbard, Hubert Laws, Hank Crawford, Stanley Turrentine, George Benson, Johnny Hammond, Ron Carter, Billy Cobham and Airto Moreira. Liner notes are by multi-Grammy winning musician-producer Bob Belden who says California Concert: The Hollywood Palladium "...ranks up there with the greatest jazz concerts of all time..."
There will also be a full slate of classic CTI album reissues packaged in eco-friendly softpack sleeves that replicate the original gatefold LP design and their iconic covers most with photos by Pete Turner. Six titles will arrive on October 5: She Was Too Good To Me by Chet Baker, God Bless the Child by Kenny Burrell, Red Clay by Freddie Hubbard, StoneFlower by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Morning Star by Hubert Laws (first time on CD), and Stanley Turrentine's Sugar. Upcoming January 2011 CD releases include White Rabbit by George Benson, All Blues by Ron Carter (first time on CD outside of Japan), Prelude by Deodato, Pure Desmond by Paul Desmond, Concierto by Jim Hall, and Milt Jackson's Sunflower.
October 26 sees 180-gram vinyl LP reissues of 4 classic CTI albums using the original gatefold sleeve designs accompanied with digital download cards: Red Clay by Freddie Hubbard, Stanley Turrentine's Sugar, White Rabbit by George Benson and Prelude by Deodato.
In the 1970s, CTI, its music, its style and its discriminating quality transformed contemporary jazz. The roster worked almost like a repertory company, in which great musicians took turns in the spotlight and accompanying each other. The albums they and their colleagues created set new standards in their look as well as their sound. "[Creed Taylor's] plan was ingeniously simple, yet famously maverick: record top-tier musicians, keeping their artistic integrity intact while also making their art palatable to the people. CTI thus achieved that rare balance of jazz and commercialism," writes Dan Ouellette in the liner notes. CTI surpassed the majors and fellow indies to be named the #1 Jazz Label of 1974 by Billboard. The immediate success of CTI's recordings has echoed across the decades in a profound influence on jazz, pop, R&B and hip-hop.

John Lennon Killer Mark Chapman Denied Parole
The idiot who killed Beatle John Lennon has been denied parole for the sixth time. Mark Chapman, 55, will remain in prison until at least August 2012 before he can re-apply for release. (I won't show a picture of him)
Chapman, who shot Lennon dead in New York in 1980, was interviewed via video by the New York state parole board. They acknowledged his institutional record, but noted the murder’s “premeditated, senseless and selfish act of tragic consequence."
Lennon would have turned 70 next month.
I say let him out. Justice would be done by someone, somewhere and hopefully he suffers......

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne
FOR THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 6, 2010
DEAR JERRY: In the early 1950s, when we bought our very first television, we watched an early version of today's talent search shows.
This one may have been a local area production (New York) rather than a network program, but either way it wasn't around long.
I recall it as a talent competition between youngsters and oldsters. Most of the contestants were singers or musicians.
More importantly, one of those child singers was Connie Francis. Of that I am certain. This was many years before her first big hit and worldwide fame.
I scoured the internet, including Connie's bio and some sites about early TV shows, but there is no mention anywhere about what I have described to you.
You are my only hope!
—Sherry Wolkowski, Merrick, N.Y.
DEAR SHERRY: Having discussed most of Connie's career with her over the years, there are some details she shared with me about those early years. Those, along with my own research, should fill in the blanks:
Circa 1951, with her accordion and still using the family name, Connie Franconero appeared on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts. Singing “Daddy's Little Girl,” she won the competition as determined by measuring the applause of a live audience on a noise meter.
In early '52, Connie was invited to perform on “Battle of the Ages,” a DuMont Television Network program and the one you ask about.
Hosted by John Reed King at the time (DuMont), then later by Morey Amsterdam (CBS), the show pitted under-35 contestants against those over age 35.
Having dropped the accordion — figuratively, not literally — from her act, and replaced Franconero with Francis, Emcee King introduces her thusly: “Connie Francis, a little 13-year-old girl who sings like a real big girl. A wonderful television star, here she is. Connie, come on out here, I've been telling everybody about you! Connie was originally discovered by Danny Lewis, Jerry Lewis' father.”
After an energized version of the then-current Kay Starr hit, “Wheel of Fortune,” King prophetically declares “How about that? 13 years of age, Connie Francis. She's going places!”
Indeed she would, though not until 1958 and “Who's Sorry Now.”
During that six-year journey, MGM released nine consecutive singles by Connie, not one of which became a hit. Coincidentally, the title of the last of those 18 songs reflects the number of flops: “Eighteen” (MGM 12490).
The losing streak ended there, and the rest is history.
Because of their scarcity, those nine misses are more valuable ($30 to $40) than the many MGM hits that followed ($10 to $15).
DEAR JERRY: I wonder if I was hoodwinked in a quiz from a music loving pal.
My challenge was to guess how many No. 1 songs in 50 years (1950 through 1999) include the name of a state in the title — other than Georgia! “California Girls”; “California Sun”; and “California Dreaming” first came to mind, then “Kentucky Rain”; “The Tennessee Waltz”; and several more.
The guy stopped me and said I'd already gone way too far, though I did get one right: “The Tennessee Waltz.”
Otherwise, he swore that in all 50 years there is only one other example: “The Yellow Rose of Texas.”
Is it possible in 50 years there are really only two (besides Georgia)?
—Larry Trammel, Racine, Wisc.
DEAR LARRY: Very amazing, but the story is true.
Nearly as astonishing is finding three for Georgia, which is probably why your pal disregarded them: “Georgia on My Mind” (1960); “The Night the Lights Went out in Georgia” (1973); and “Midnight Train to Georgia” (1973). That is more than all other states combined.
The California and Kentucky hits you mention all reached the Top 10, but fell short of No. 1.
IZ ZAT SO? Before 1948, when CBS and ABC joined the fold, the only two U.S. television networks operating were NBC and DuMont. In 1956, after 10 years, the DuMont Network, owned by DuMont Laboratories, ceased operations. By then, some of their programming had already been picked up by CBS, including “Battle of the Ages,” though they cancelled it after just one season (1952).

Fever Ray - "Mercy Street" Out Today
For Immediate Release
"It's an interpretation of Peter Gabriel's 'Mercy Street'. We made it more intense and faster to fit our eccentric percussionists and energetic live musicians. It is a monotone track but we worked with the dynamics trying to make it sparkle. I listened to it a lot when I was around 15, and it still moves me. It made me start reading Anne Sexton too." - Karin Dreijer Andersson
Fever Ray aka Karin Dreijer Andersson of The Knife is back. Having performed spellbinding live covers of well-loved tracks by artists as varied as Nick Cave, Vashti Bunyan and Peter Gabriel, her cover of the latter's “Mercy Street” is officially released today as a digital download and on covetable limited edition 7’’ through Mute in the US and Canada. The 7” single will include album track “Dry and Dusty."
Gabriel wrote ‘Mercy Street’ about influential Pulitzer Prize winning American poet Anne Sexton, with the track taking its title from her 1969 play of the same name. The cover is chillingly atmospheric, all driving beats and Dreijer Andersson’s crystalline vocals imploring us to “wait until darkness comes."
For those who have yet to experience the 'Mercy Street' cover live, you can catch Fever Ray's stunning audio-visual show in Europe – art directed by long term collaborator Andreas Nilsson – on the following dates:
September:
5th - Electric Picnic, Dublin, Ireland
6th - O2 ABC, Glasgow
8th - Brixton Academy, London
9th - Olympia, Paris, France
10th - Berlin Festival, Berlin, Germany
12th - Bestival, Isle of Wight

Helmet - Seeing Eye Dog (vinyl)
On 180 gram vinyl; comes with a digital download! The second LP contains the live album Live at Warped Tour San Francisco July 8, 2006, featuring nine tracks. Seeing Eye Dog, Helmet's seventh album, is one of the band's most uncompromising and ambitious releases, embodying the classic and utterly unique Helmet sound and pushing it into regions the band has never before explored. One big reason for that spirit of musical adventure is the record is essentially self-released (through the Work Song label). "I just felt completely free to do whatever I wanted to do," says frontman Page Hamilton. "It was really fun to make this record because I just felt this. . . freedom." Freedom can also arise from limitation, something Hamilton knows well - as ever, he insisted on having few overdubs and edits on Seeing Eye Dog. "This album is human and honest," he declares. "People have always commented that we sound like our albums live, and our recording approach has a lot to do with that. Humans playing music will always be better than chop-shop rock." Besides Hamilton, the humans on Seeing Eye Dog include drummer Kyle Stevenson, who joined Helmet in 2006, guitarist Dan Beeman, who's been on board since 2008, and long-time Helmet bassist Chris Traynor (Dave Case is the band's touring bassist). The album was produced by Hamilton, with additional production by Toshi Kasai (Melvins) and vocal production by Mark Renk.

Beatles and Brit pop influences abound on Everything, and the band provides a nod to those influences with their attention to filling the album with great songs beginning to end, not building an album around just a few great tracks.

Venetian Snares - My So-Called Life
A lesson in mutant jungle, My So-Called Life rips up the taste and decency rulebook and mashes up ten songs in the characteristic style of breakcore king Venetian Snares (aka Aaron Funk). "Posers with Camera Phones" sets the standard: Melody? Check. Jungle breaks? Check. Tongue-in-cheek offensive sample? Check. "Aaron2" shows Funk's love of the old school with crazy hoovers. Other tracks like "Welfare Wednesday" are straight-up fun with lyrics that make one laugh or cry. "Hajnal2" works one of Funk's best-known tracks from one of his bestselling albums, Rossz Csillag Alatt Szueletett. The title track closes My So-Called Life with melancholy strings that leave the listener craving more. For fans of drum 'n' bass, breakcore, jungle, old school, rave or good music in general - this one's for you.

This from Blabbermouth.net, the continuing saga of Aerosmith:
PERRY: I'm Not Going To Sit Around For Two Years Waiting For TYLER To Come Back To AEROSMITH
The Calgary Herald conducted an interview with AEROSMITH guitarist Joe Perry ahead of the band's September 10, 2010 appearance at the Pengrowth Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
On when fans will have a chance to see the Boston hard rock band in action again:
"Technically speaking, after the gig in Vancouver (on Sept. 16), I don't have a job with AEROSMITH. We know these are the last shows for awhile. And I really do mean awhile. I don't know when we'll be out there again, the five of us, so we'll be playing with everything we've got."
On learning through the media that singer Steven Tyler was up for a second job as a judge on the reality TV singing competition "American Idol":
"(The whole group) sat down not too long ago, when we decided to do this tour, and we basically laid out plans for the next two years. And when you're sitting there talking about that and one of the band members knows full well he's signed a contract that's taking him out of the music business for up to seven months of the year — that kind of throws a wrench into things . . . It's all very well to say, 'I'm going to go off and do this and it won't interfere with the band . . .' but there's only so many weeks in the month and so many months in the year."
On what Perry and the rest of AEROSMITH plans to do while Tyler gets busy on the side with a variety of projects, including "American Idol" and his long-awaited autobiography:
"I'm not going to sit around for two years waiting for him to come back to AEROSMITH. (You've got) four guys that are great together, and if you find the right singer, there's no reason you can't go and entertain people."
On the incident at AEROSMITH's Toronto show at Air Canada Centre where Tyler hip-checked Perry and Perry responded with a bump of his own, causing Tyler to lose his balance, falling from the stage:
"He's got this thing in his head that it's cool when the guys in the band bump into each other. Nobody else in the band feels that way. . . . Leave me alone when I'm playing."
On his thoughts on "American Idol":
"It's a reality show designed to get people to watch that station and sell advertising. It's one step above ('Teenage Mutant') 'Ninja Turtles'.
"I'll tell you one thing, when we put this band together, this is not something that (Steven Tyler) would do.
"It's his business, but I don't want AEROSMITH's name involved with it. We have nothing to do with it."

How and Where to Sell Old Phonograph Records
This is a great article and explains that what you think your records may be worth, get a reality check, just because the recorda may be old, doesn't make them valuable, someone has to WANT them!
Have you studied your ABCs lately--that is Attics, Basements and Closets? They could yield up some extra money and free up some valuable space in your home for other uses. LPs (long-playing 10 and 12 inch discs, playing at 33 1/3 revolutions per minute), 78s (easily breakable discs, playing at 78 revolutions per minute with one tune on each side) and 45s(7 inch discs playing at 45 revolutions per minute) may be valuable.
Record collecting as a hobby is just beginning to grow after many other collectibles have been prominently featured in antique stores and the media. It is not an expensive hobby to establish, but disposing of them can be expensive in many ways.
HOW DO YOU RECOGNIZE VALUE
Many people think that just because a record is old that it has great value. Very few records have any real value to collectors or dealers. Value is based on a combination of three factors -
(1) Supply and demand. How available is the record? If millions were initially sold it is likely that many will turn up in thrift shops, used record stores and in many homes. The scarcity factor must be present. There must be a demand for that record because of the artist performing (e.g. a major talent who died young and before being able to make many records), the label on which it was recorded (the original recording as distinguished from a "reissue"), or an oddity concerning the record(e.g. a V-disc, wartime government recording or aircheck-taken from a radio broadcast, an original picture disc or a 10-inch LP). The scarcity factor can also be affected by whether a record is "out-of-print"(no longer available from the manufacturer) thereby decreasing the supply. "Bootlegs" (records illegally produced from live concerts or broadcasts) are also valuable to collectors.
(2) Condition of the record. Those with surface noises and scratches will be of little or no value. If it is in "mint" condition (perfect) or "near mint" condition it will have the highest possible value. A record in "very good" condition should not have any distorted sounds or loss of sound quality. "Good" means it may have some imperfections, but can be readily enjoyed. "Fair" means it can play, but will have obvious sound impairment and detract from your enjoyment and the value of the record. Some dealers may have a slightly different grading scale.
(3) Content of the recording. Generally speaking there is more interest in music than in spoken word or comedy records and the value therefor would be greater. Certain kinds of musical recordings bring high sales prices. Jazz, original Broadway cast and movie soundtracks tend to provide a more active market and greater value. Also early rhythm and blues records and the doowop sound are also highly valued and collectible. Among classical records the most valuable are orchestral performances, then solo instrumental, chamber music and concertos and solo vocal and operatic arias and finally complete operas. To some collectors, whether a record is mono or stereo affects the value. Recently a market began developing for rock records of early vintage, especially those of deceased cult figures such as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison. Also, brisk trading now occurs among collectors of 45s, especially among the 1950s rhythm and blues and early rock artists. Great interest maintains in rare and unusual (foreign issues, etc.) in Elvis and the Beatles. However, most of their records have little value because so many were produced without any distinguishing characteristics. In other words they were all the same.
WHO WILL BUY YOUR RECORDS?
Records are purchased by collectors, mail order dealers, used records stores and the general public, sometimes on a nostalgic impulse or because of a favorite artist. For truly rare records the best prices will come from dealers who know the market and for how much they can resell them. Collectors are emotional and sometimes fanatical collecting their specialties. They may pay top prices for particular idiosyncracies. It is unusual to get top dollar for a rare record from the "general public', where only the performance value is recognized, not the resale or trading value. Painstaking research and knowledge of the record industry and its artists is required to determine the value of a particular recording. It may be possible to determine a value for a "rare" record once you have determined that it is truly rare.
WHAT WILL THEY PAY?
Most records that are not "rare" can bring only pennies - 25 cents to a dollar - from dealers. The "general public" may pay $1 or $2. Rare records can bring from $25 to the thousands. There are a number of price guides published, but values indicated are generally highly inflated or based on an isolated sale. Obviously, collectors and dealers want to read that records can bring high prices. Remember, value rests in the mind of the buyer.
HOW DO YOU FIND A BUYER?
A buyer for every record you wish to sell probably exists somewhere in the world. How to find that person is a big problem. It is not uncommon for people to discover old records in their homes and proceed to spend many dollars (far in excess of the eventual e record) and untold hours in pursuit of a buyer. It can become very frustrating and sometimes obsessive. Expectations almost always exceed reality.
Records can be sold by advertising - in local classifieds or collectors' publications, by selling to local used record stores, selling at flea markets or bazaars or by promoting a garage sale. Start by cataloging the records. List the artist, the title of the record, LP, 45 or 78rpm, the record catalog number and its condition. Take the list to a record librarian and some used record stores for offers and indications as to rarity. Talk to friends and associates.
Selling involves prospective buyers visiting your home. Or, you may have to pack and cart the records to a store for a price quote and no sale. Damage in transit can make them worthless. Out-of-town prospects requires mail correspondence, packing, insurance, carting to the post office, placing postage and sending C.O.D. The buyer may refuse to accept upon receipt.

Boston Pop/rock Sensation One Step Away Releases New Full Length Studio Album: "For The Broken"
Boston Pop/Rock Sensation One Step Away delivers release of a new full length studio album: "For The Broken." They head back home after a summer of nationwide shows for their CD Release Show at Hard Rock Cafe Boston September 19, 2010, 5-7pm.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
One Step Away: Healy,Carrington,Trudeau,Nuzzolo
PRLog (Press Release) – Sep 04, 2010 – It has been a busy summer for the Boston Pop/Rock sensation One Step Away with many days spent away from home in the recording studio and on their promotional tour. Their new full length studio album: “For the Broken” is the result of several prior months of songwriting, juggled amidst demanding schedules which included school, sports, jobs , practices and peformances. One Step Away is comprised of Terence Healy (Lead Guitar), Adam Carrington (Lead Vocals), Mike Nuzzolo, (Bass & Vocals) and newest member: Ben Trudeau (Drums).
Most of the songs on the album are brand new with only one song "In This Moment", rerecorded from their original EP "One Decision" released in 2008. Guiding their decisions on the album was Executive Producer Dan Malsch and co-producer Alec Henniger both from Soundmine Recording Studios (Framing Hanley, Forever the Sickest Kids, Four Year Strong). One Step Away band members gathered at least three times a week during their busy school year to get input on their songs from their producers over Skype. Starting in June of 2010, as soon as band members finished their school year, they left to stay at the recording studio in the hills of Pennsylvania, where they spent hundreds of hours recording their CD.
Writing all their own songs, One Step Away strays from the majority of young pop artists who generally only write a portion, if any, of their own music. "We write all our own songs from riffs to melodies to lyrics," states Terence 'Tito' Healy, "it is a collaborative effort." Mike Nuzzolo adds, "On our recordings, it is 100% us; our instrumentals and our vocals". This is what makes One Step Away unique -- to be such a young band and able to do it all themselves.
What you get in their new album "For the Broken" is their special authenticity that reaches right down into the souls of what is on the minds of today's youth. There is a constant theme of longing for a special someone and a constant questioning of what lies ahead for them. The name "For the Broken" came from the lyrics of their first track song on the album: "Here We Go,” which has the phrase "lullaby of the broken heart".
Their authentic quality goes right with them to the stage. Sounding surprisingly close to their recordings, and often better, the band stuns many with how much raw talent they have. In live performances their vocals are crystal clear, and instrumentation is tight. This is much to the credit of hard-working Adam Carrington, lead vocalist, who is proud of his vocal studies and likes to talk learning some "opera". Back in his early days with the band, one news reporter asked him of how it was to sing classical and in theater versus with the band. Carrington replied that he enjoys the vocal and stage "freedom" with the band. You can see this in his total entrenchment in the music on the stage while performing with One Step Away. This absorption and focus is seen by all the band members and bales them to perform flawlessly even if their audience is in the thousands. This was put to the test this summer with their big stage performances in venues like Boston Harborfest and Universal Studios Hollywood CityWalk Stage.

Here’s what one reviewer has stated:
“I do know talent and potential when I hear it and this band has it all. I know for a fact there are millions of kids out there that will eat this stuff up. If a major label misses picking up One Step Away they will be kicking themselves in the pants for eternity.” -- from Muzikreviews
On September 19, 2010, One Step Away returns to Hard Rock Café Boston to deliver their CD Release Show at the Hard Rock Cafe in Boston from 5-7pm.
