Digging into the first of the 100k records we brought back from Oklahoma City, we unearthed stock copies unplayed for decades of classic hits and obscurities.
We'll play rare 60's Mod and Sunshine Pop from Richard Kent Style and Mike Konstan. Plus, some very weird records we know nothing about, when it's OK to be double charged for a hotel room, the demise of Rock Band in the news, a new Top 5 and EMI's new box set of Apple records non-Beatle classics.

Top 5 eBay Vinyl Record Sales - Week Ending 11/06/2010
Back from several weeks in and out of California, bringing records home from all outdoors, about 120,000 total. Now that I have inventory queued up, time to catch up on the Top 5. The week ending October 30th has fallen into oblivion, which was a bad week on many levels and I don't miss it.
Damn decent to see a 78 make the list any week, but at the top and over $10k is something special. So is this Robert Johnson record. The seller stated "You'll never see a better copy unless you were standing at the pressing plant in 1938." I'll dig up this or something from Robert Johnson for VRT this week - we are returning with a new show.
Three soul records make the list this week with two 45's and the "Black Out" LP which is a compilation of local funk bands out of Oklahoma from 1970.
1. 78 - Robert Johnson "Me & The Devil Blues" / "Little Queen Of Spades" Vocalion 04108 - $12,100.00
2. 45 - Ellipsis "People" / "Gregory Moore" Briarmeade - $3,605.00
3. LP - Leonid Kogan "Beethoven Violin Concerto" Columbia SAX 2386 UK Pressing - $3,560.00
4. 45 - Harvey Scales "Trying To Survive" / "Bump Your Thang" Magic Touch 3002 - $3,170.00
5. LP - various artists "Black-Out: New Sounds Of '70" Century - $3,107.00
Top 5 eBay Vinyl Record Sales - Week Ending 11/13/2010
Another one of those weeks where the old guard monsters take over the list. The Beatles "Please Please Me" makes the top of the list again, while the Led Zeppelin "Road Box" sells for about half of its usual price. The Fix's punk 45 from the seventies gets the #4 spot; this record looks more and more like the essential punk collectible.
1. LP - The Beatles "Please Please Me" Parlophone UK Gold Black label 1st Stereo - $5,796.95
2. LP - The Beatles "Yellow Submarine" Odeon (for export) - $5,168.64
3. 45 - The Poets "Wrapped Around Your Finger" / "Wait Until Tomorrow" J-2 DJ Copy - $3,661.00
4. 45 - The Fix "Vengence" / "In This Town" - $3,383.00
5. 12" - Led Zeppelin “Road Box” Test Pressing - $3,300.00

Music News & Notes
Desultory Reveals "Counting Our Scars" Album Artwork
The album artwork for "Counting Our Scars", the new full-length release from reunited Swedish death metallers Desultory is now revealed. The album artwork and layout was designed and conceptualized by artist Travis Smith (Nevermore, Opeth, Amorphis, King Diamond, etc).
Comments Desultory singer / guitar-player Klas Morberg: "It’s been more than a year now since we entered the studio to record the first Desultory album in over a decade. This album will write a new chapter in the history of the band and it has been with great anticipation and endurance we have waited for the cover art to take form. We wanted the whole package, from music and lyrics to the visual appearance to communicate the same feeling, and as it turned out, this work had to take time. Now, at the very last hours of this long year, we are finally ready to reveal it all to you. We hope you think it was worth the wait, we do."

WMG Become Full Owners Of Roadrunner Records
Roadrunner Records, one of the industry's longest running metal and hard rock labels, has now been fully purchased by Warner Music Group. Warner had previously bought 73.5% of the company in 2007. An internal memo from label founder and CEO Cees Wessels announcing the changes, as appearing on Billboard's website, can be read below:
"Since joining the Warner Music family, we have enjoyed some of our greatest creative and commercial successes as a label. Most importantly, we have retained our unique identity while also expanding our horizons, thanks in part to the tremendous expertise and experience we can tap into as part of the Warner Music family and the relationships we have built with our Warner Music colleagues around the world.
"I am very proud that Roadrunner is now a fully-fledged stable mate of such iconic labels as Atlantic , Warner Bros. Records, Elektra, Asylum and Rhino, and I believe that we are in this position thanks to our team’s hard work and consistently original approach over the years. The vast majority of our staff around the world will experience little or no change to their roles.
"However after carefully reviewing our operations, we have decided to transfer the support functions across to our Warner Music colleagues in some territories. This is not an easy process to undertake, but we believe that, by making these changes, we can take Roadrunner to the next level by focusing our resources on marketing our existing line-up of acclaimed artists as well as discovering the stars of tomorrow."

Tankard Reveals New Album Artwork
German heavy metallers Tankard have announced that their new studio album, "Vol(l)ume 14" will be released through AFM Records on December 17th. A deluxe edition of the record will also be released, which will contain the band's full set from Headbanger’s Open Air 2009.

Unwritten Law to release album in March 2011
Unwritten Law have recently announced the artwork and approximate release date for their upcoming album on Suburban Noize Records/BreakSilence. For the artwork, the band invited fans to submit proposed covers and will be releasing three of those covers on three different album versions. Scott Russo explained:
"We wanted to bring our fans into the process of making this record so we decided to have a contest where the fans make the artwork for the cover. We got a lot of great artwork and it was very hard to decide. We couldn't get everyone to agree on one clear cut winner, so we decided to take our three favorite entries and have three different covers for the album. I think, for me, the fly cover was my favorite because it took what my interpretation of 'Swan' was literally; something disgusting turned into something beautiful. The second image of the feather in blood was everyone's all around favorite, because it seemed kind of soft, romantic and violent at the same time. The final entry of the woman with wings sitting on a chair just looked classy and timeless. We felt this image of the introverted girl waiting to explode was an amazing interpretation that depicts the beauty of coming of age. We're really happy that fans got to be a part of the creation of this Unwritten Law record."
The album is tentatively scheduled for release in March of 2011.

Metallica Planning New Album, More 'Big Four' Tour Dates
Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich has recently said that the band are set to record a new album next year. Ulrich said the group are looking forward to starting work on the follow-up to 2008’s ‘Death Magnetic.'
“There's a bunch of balls in the air for 2011, but I think the main one is we really want to get back to writing again," he said. "We haven't really written since, what, '06, '07, and we want to get back to kind of just being creative again.”
He added: “I'd say, March or April, and start probably putting the creative cap back on and start writing some songs."
Ulrich also told Pulse of Radio that Metallica hoped to perform more ‘Big Four’ dates with Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeath in the coming years.

Neil plays, Daniel "La-noise" manipulates. The result is a solo album—a man and his guitar— that takes on gargantuan proportions as it throbs, undulates, oozes, howls, flows, rattles and hums through a series of reminiscences, philosophical discussions, entreaties and proclamations of faith that only an older man could possibly produce and deliver with such rich and fervent authority.
Young’s riffs and melodic lines will bring to mind previous grunge epics from his Crazy Horse collaborations like “Cinnamon Girl” and “Cortez the Killer,” but not anchored to a rhythm section and expanded by Lanois’ multiple echoes, loops and other sonic business, they attain a surprising ethereal lightness combined with the obvious crushing weight.
He sometimes plays his favorite black Les Paul, still recognizable through the processing, but on the minor key mournful treasure “Love and War” and on most of the others he plays a Lanois-modded Gretsch hollow body acoustic guitar with an impossibly deep low E string (electronically manipulated), picking in the bridge gorgeous Spanish style riffs on a song about a career writing songs of love and war.
It’s what people write songs about and pray about, Young sings, but he admits in the opening lines that when he sings about love and war, “I don’t really know what I am saying.”
For those who have journeyed through time with Neil Young, nothing here will come as a big surprise but all of it will resonate emotionally and especially physically if you still have the guts to turn it up. Way up!
“The Hitchhiker” covers Young’s emotional ups and downs coupled to his drug history non-judgmentally, going from early years smoking hash (through a pen), amphetamines (felt like his head was in a glass, but he knew it wouldn’t last), Valium prescribed by a doctor to counter agitation as fame hit him in ways he hadn’t expected, then paranoia when he wouldn’t sign an autograph, appear on TV or “see or be seen,” then weed after he’d moved to his ranch, and finally after a break-up cocaine, where his “…head did explode.” Young admits that though he’s tried to leave his past behind, “..it’s catching up with me. I don’t know how I’m standing here, living in my life. I’m thankful for my children and my faithful wife.” All delivered without a grain of self-pity.
On “Peaceful Valley Boulevard,” Young delivers a powerful ecological plea delivering a history of the West from pre-Transcontinental railroad days through the near extinction of the Buffalo, the California gold rush, the age of the automobile and finally climate change, and on the closer “Rumblin’” Young contemplates mortality as he feels a rumbling “in her ground.” “When will I learn how to give back?” he asks. “When will I learn how to feel?”
Despite, or perhaps because of Lanois’ mega-treatments consisting of loops, chorusing, echoes and other forms of sonic manipulation, the songs grow in both physical and emotional stature. The bottom end foundation is huge and deep. If your system can do deep bass, this recording will shake your room from the opening chord of “Walk With Me.”
Though the processing and time-shifting is major, Lanois’s deft hand never takes control or diminishes Young’s performances or intentions; quite the opposite in fact. The stage is massive: wide and deep, with Young appearing as a giant, diffuse apparition between the speakers. Young's singing is as direct and powerful as its ever been.
The album was recorded in Daniel Lanois’s home studio, located in a grandiose, old Silver Lake mansion in a section of Los Angeles once rundown and now among the hippest sections of the city. It’s pictured on the album’s inner gatefold and on the back cover. The place has an obvious deep “vibe,” probably similar to the one in New Orleans out of which Lanois used to operate. The album was recorded in real time using the producer’s arsenal of vintage recording and processing gear and manipulated later.
You can watch Neil perform the album live on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wU5B53b9ntQ but to really feel the power, you need this 180g LP.

Radiohead New Album "Not Finished" and No Tour Plans
Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood has recently been trying to clarify reports that work on the band’s new album is almost done. In an interview with Italian Rolling Stone, the guitarist was quoted as saying that the follow-up to 2007’s ‘In Rainbows’ was “almost finished”.
He was also said to have revealed that the band were planning a “big tour” in support of the effort. However, in a message on the band's website, Greenwood states:
“I think this Italian writer (referred to here) has, either thorough over-enthusiasm, or frustration at all my non-committal answers, mistranslated me a little. “In fact we haven't quite finished the album - in the studio at the moment - nor have we yet considered any touring.
“The plan is to have no plan until the record is finished...hope that's a little clearer!”

Peacebeliever Organization Launches New Version of John Lennon's 'Give Peace A Chance' to Benefit Children's Music Foundation
Buena Vista Social Club, Louis Armstrong's Grandson, Supertramp's Roger Hodgson and 10cc Members Among Those Featured On 'Give Peace A Chance'
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 11, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- To mark John Lennon's 70th birthday as well as the 30th anniversary of his assassination, the organization Peacebeliever will release a new version of his classic "Give Peace A Chance" to raise money for their foundation. The single will be available for purchase on both http://www.peacebeliever.com/ and iTunes.
The project involves more than 20 musicians and more than 100 children around the world on this updated version of the song, which adds a new verse performed in Spanish, the first time in history that the John Lennon estate has given someone the rights to do so.
Famed Cuban band Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club are joined on the recordings by U.K. sensation Newton Faulkner; Supertramp's Roger Hodgson; 10cc members Graham Gouldman and Eugene Hideaway; Australian singer Nik Phillips, the first westerner to crack the Top Five on the mainland domestic Chinese music charts; Omara Portuondo, who starred in Wim Wenders' award-winning documentary Buena Vista Social Club and Herb Armstrong, grandson of jazz legend Louis Armstrong. Other artists involved include Natalie Pa'A Pa, lead singer with Australian urban roots band Blue King Brown, ARIA Award winner Katie Noonan, Australian children's TV host and Australian Children's Music Foundation founder Don Spencer, Australian country music singer-songwriter Ange Whiteley along with her four children, and 80 students from Byron Bay Steiner School and Matraville Soldier's Settlement Public School.
All proceeds from the single will go to Peacebeliever, an organization designed to support music education in schools, a cause near and dear to the heart of Peacebeliever founder Yolanda Vega, who moved to Australia from her native Spain in 1971 with her parents at the age of six, learning how to speak by singing the songs she heard while watching TV Shows like Sesame Street.
"I believe that music is very important in the development of any child and I learned a great deal thanks to music," she says. "Knowing that many children are not able to have access to music during their education both saddens and alarms me."
A journalist for several publications, Vega became Youth Editor for the top-selling newspaper in Australia, contributing a weekly color cartoon and becoming an advocate for children's rights. A Children's Music Judge for ARIA, the Australian version of the Grammys, Yolanda has been involved in a number of not-for-profit organizations, including Save the Children Foundation, the AIDS Council of Australia and the Abused Child Trust.
"My Christmas wish is to sell one million singles online this season, and for Peacebeliever to raise money globally for children around the world," concludes Vega.
"Give Peace A Chance" will be available on iTunes and http://www.peacebeliever.com/ on December 8, 2010.

The Decemberists release 'The King Is Dead' in January
The Decemberists are releasing 'The King Is Dead' January 18 on Capitol Records. The album's "10 concise, country-based songs" is an intentional shift toward "simplicity," according to the press release, and sees the band working not only with producer Tucker Martine, but also with Gillian Welch and R.E.M.'s Peter Buck. According to Colin Meloy:
"It’s a real challenge to make simple music, and lot of times we had to deliberately hold off and keep more space. This record is an exercise in restraint. [...] Over the last eleven years or so, since I moved to Portland, I feel like I've been mining mostly English traditions for influence. I guess I've kind of come back to a lot of the more American music that got me going in the first place — R.E.M. and Camper Van Beethoven and all these bands that borrowed from more American traditions like Neil Young and the Byrds. Sometimes I kind of miss the epic-ness of the other albums, but it’s nice to get all of the information across in three minutes. It’s like going from reading a novel to reading a bunch of short stories."
The Decemberists will appear on Conan November 18 to perform "Down by the Water," the lead single off the album.
Tracklisting:
01. Don't Carry It All
02. Calamity Song
03. Rise to Me
04. Rox in the Box
05. January Hymn
06. Down by the Water
07. All Arise!
