fantastic interview with the rock vets:

Christian rockers, Stryper, release covers album

Written by
PATRICK DOUGLAS

There are two words that by themselves attract followers around the world. Put together, they seem to alienate one side or the other — Christian rock.

Christian rock has been around since the '60s but few bands have achieved the type of mainstream success Stryper has. To this day, their 1986 record, "To Hell With the Devil," is the best-selling Christian rock album of all time, eventually selling more than 2 million copies.

Staples on MTV in the '80s, Stryper never had a problem fitting in with contemporaries such as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, and there's an easy explanation.

MY DYING BRIDE: 'Evinta' Deluxe Edition Detailed

2010 marked the 20th anniversary of U.K. doom metal legends MY DYING BRIDE. To commemorate two decades of doom and gloom from the elite British act, the band embarked upon a special project to re-work familiar melodies and themes from its extensive catalogue into long, flowing symphonic compositions, incorporating new vocals and passages from vocalist, Aaron Stainthorpe. These arrangements have been brought to life in co-operation with keyboard maestro Johnny Maudling (of BAL-SAGOTH fame), as well as a clutch of talented classical musicians, and shared vocals courtesy of professional opera singer Lucie Roche. The collection — titled "Evinta" — will be released on May 31 via Peaceville Records as a two-disc set and deluxe three-disc edition with 64-page book inspired by MY DYING BRIDE's illustrious recordings of the past two decades.

Friends share love of vinyl by opening Ribbon Records

By Danielle Hatch

PEORIA — Peorian Dan Plaag has been collecting music since he was a kid. It started with a CD of Led Zeppelin’s “Four,” and his collection eventually expanded to include vinyl records — more than 2,000 of them.

“I was always fascinated with records, how the sound could be coming off this little piece of plastic with a needle,” said Plaag, 27, who works as an electrician.

His love of records — and fondness for the hunt that goes along with the collector’s lifestyle — prompted him to start Ribbon Records, a vinyl consignment shop in the Murray Building Downtown. He runs the store with friend Noah Lambert

Spotlight: A love for vinyl

BY LUKE VOELZ

Kirk Walther gazed into the briefcase of a man known as Warren Peace.

"It's a little warped," said Peace, plucking out a plastic-wrapped parcel from within the leathery confines. "So I'll give it to you for $5."

Walther had done business with the old man, who wore faded jeans and a dirty brown jacket, several times in the past. Most of the time his prices were too high. But that day, at a 1985 Chicago record convention, this offer seemed too good to pass up.

"Deal," said Walther and walked away with an original vinyl copy of the Jimmy Hendrix Experience's Axis: Bold as Love. He later priced the album at more than $2,000.

Walther, who owns the Record Collector, 116 S. Linn St., has made many shrewd deals to make profits in an industry with uncertain futures: FYE and Real Music have closed and left his shop as the only independent music vendor in the Iowa City area.

Rival Sons Posts New Album "Pressure & Time" Artwork

Californian blues-rockers Rival Sons have revealed the cover art for their forthcoming album, "Pressure & Time," which is due to be released on June 20th. The album art was designed by artist Storm Thorgerson. The band is also planning to release a limited edition vinyl version of the album.

Thorgerson discusses the artwork: "I don't think you can be certain what's going on here. To me it's a picture about fear or concern. Here's someone about to descend and doesn't know what they'll face, or where this might lead. So, in his mind he's imagining the action. That's what you see - into his mind, as he focuses on what's about to happen. When he gets to the bottom of the stairs, where does he go? Turn left, right or straight ahead - anything's possible. And I hope this cover will have fans of the band intrigued for a long while. To me, the cover should be part of the album, and not just packaging."

That explains why, according to store co-manager Mark Goodwin, this year’s new stock of music for Record Store Day was “probably around 90 percent vinyl.”

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF APRIL 18, 2011

DEAR JERRY: Since no one else asks about songs with the same title, yet are completely different, I'll do it myself.

An example is Del Shannon's classic 1960s hit, “Runaway,” and another “Runaway” by Jefferson Starship, in the 1970s.

I have both and know, other than their titles, they have absolutely nothing in common.

What title appears on the greatest number of popular records, with each being a different song than the others?

Logic dictates it would be a one-word title, as the more words there are, the less likely other songs would have the same title.

It might be “Runaway,” though “Tonight” (Ferrante & Teicher) and “Crazy” (Patsy Cline) could also be in the running.
—Linda Oakridge, Beaumont, Texas

DEAR LINDA: Sometimes if you want something done right, you just have to do it yourself.

It took several hours to research this, but it was fun and I love the question.

All three you suggest are in the running, and among my Top 10. I verified 10 different hit recordings of “Runaway”; 14 of “Tonight”; and 15 of “Crazy.”

Here are the other seven titles, and number of different songs: “Dreams” (11); “Sunshine” (12); “You” (12); “Happy” (16); “I Love You” (17); “Angel” (21); and at the top of the list, “Hold On” (33).

Other than “Hold On” and “I Love You,” my choices are indeed one-word titles, thus supporting your theory.

Each of the following artists, listed alphabetically with year of issue, recorded a significant and distinctive version of “Hold On”:

Badfinger (1981); Tanya Blount (1995); Crystal Bowersox (2010); Danny Brooks & Rockin' Revelators (2009); Michael Buble (2010); Rosanne Cash (1986); Natalie Cole (1980); Dove Brothers (2009); Dwele (2004); En Vogue (1990); Ian Gomm (1979); Good Charlotte (2004); Gail Davies (1983); Jonas Brothers (2007); Kansas (1980); Rich Landers (1981); Sarah McLachlan (1994); Donny Osmond (1989); R.J.'s Latest Arrival (1987); Radiants (1968); Rascals (1970); Rusko (2010); Santana (1982); Sons of Champlin (1976); Symba (1980); Ed Townsend (1959); Triumph (1979); KT Tunstall (2007); Tom Waits (1999); Jamie Walters (1995); Wild Cherry (1977); Wilson Phillips (1990); and Steve Winwood (1977).

Not included in our count are songs titled “Hold On” plus a subtitle. Three examples are “Hold On (To This Old Fool)” (Buddy Ace); “Hold On (Just a Little Bit Longer)” (Anthony & the Imperials); and “Hold On (For Love's Sake)” (Joyce Kennedy).

DEAR JERRY: There were a couple of records in our home in early '60s, both with such unusual titles I have never forgotten them.

Having not seen either in 50 years, I don't recall the singers. One is about daddy and the other about papa.

First is “Fill the Gap in Your Mouth with Teeth Because Your Daddy's Tired of Kissing Your Gums.”

Second is “When They Operated on Papa They Opened Mama's Male.”

Ever heard of these comical oldies but goodies?
—Richard Tillman, Evansville, Ind.

DEAR RICHARD: Considering the degree of difficulty associated with remembering such long-winded titles, you did great.

The only corrections are inconsequential, but the title of the first one, exactly as shown on the label, is “Fill That Gap in Your Mouth with Teeth 'Cause Daddy's Tired of Kissing Gum.”

The credit on this 1949 single is Fat Man Robinson Quintet (Motif 2002).

“When They Operated on Papa They Opened Mama's Male” is by Jimmy Heap, and came out in 1960 (Imperial 8325).

IZ ZAT SO? Neither of the lengthy titles mentioned above are remotely close to being the longest ever on a U.S. record.

That honor belongs to Christine Lavin, whose 1985 “Future Fossils” LP (Philo 1104) includes this 99-word title:

“Regretting What I Said to You When You Called Me at Eleven O'clock on a Friday Morning to Tell Me That at One O'clock Friday Afternoon You're Gonna Leave Your Office, Go Downstairs, Hail a Cab to Go out to the Airport to Catch a Plane to Go Skiing in the Alps for Two Weeks. Not That I Wanted to Go with You, I Wasn't Able to Leave Town, I'm Not a Very Good Skier, I Couldn't Expect You to Pay My Way, But After Going Out with You for Three Years, I Don't Like Surprises (A Musical Apology).”

Moderated by Neil Scheild of Origami Vinyl, an all-vinyl record store and independent label in Echo Park, From Vision to Vinyl will not only offer a behind the scenes look at manufacturing, it will also provide guidance for maximizing the creative options available for a vinyl release while staying on schedule and within budget. Panelists include Pete Lyman of Infrasonic Sound Recording Co., Kevin Smith of Bill Smith Custom Records, Jennifer Freund of DoradoPkg and DJ/ Founder of Stones Throw Records, Peanut Butter Wolf. Complete panelist biographies are below.

"As vinyl resurges back into artists' and record labels' plans, more and more options for producing, manufacturing, and printing come up," says Neil Scheild of Origami Vinyl. "Our goal is to help you cut through the tape and provide you with the information needed to help you understand the process and its pro's and con's. It can be a very expensive and confusing task if you don't have the tools or knowledge behind making a record. Come hear these very experienced professionals offer up their priceless advice to get you on the way to releasing your records."

"Many of Infrasonic Sound's newer clients oftentimes start the vinyl mastering process without knowing what the next step is," says Pete Lyman, Co-Owner and Principal Mastering Engineer of Infrasonic Sound. "This panel provides an opportunity to explain the vinyl production process from start to finish and creates an amazing network of professionals in not only the music industry, but also the vinyl community."

About "From Vision to Vinyl"

Now in its second year, From Vision To Vinyl: A Step-by-Step Look at Album Production was first held at Echo Park's Origami Vinyl during the summer of 2010. Enthusiastic about the increased number of vinyl releases Los Angeles' local music community was putting forth, but acknowledging that many bands and labels were pressing vinyl for the first time, folks from Origami Vinyl and Infrasonic Sound commissioned other industry professionals (from DoradoPkg and Bill Smith Custom Records) to join them in hosting a free seminar on how to independently get a record made. The RSVP list was nearly triple the modest space's capacity. This year, the panel will be held at The GRAMMY Museum and podcast online on Wednesday, May 18th.

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

with the 2011 version of record store day in the books, the sales figures are fantastic and the day was a celebration, not only in vinyl, but the physical record store. too bad that it is just one day, as people go about their business and forget they have a record store that needs thier business.  i love the concept of rsd, however, it has its flaws.  even though rsd is denouncing the sale of these 'special releases' on eBay, the fact is there is money to be made by flipping and they can't stop it.  still, my humble opinion stays the same - the CVR blog will always support record store day!

this from the rsd site:

A brief note of thanks to everyone who went out and supported their local record stores this weekend. We hope you had a great time, and that it made you resolve to visit again and again (even though we know there are a ton of you who already do that!) We never dreamed that our little party would become so loved, or so big. We appreciate all the kind words, and we even appreciate all the constructive criticism. Nothing in this world is perfect, and nothing that involves so many diverse people will ever make them all completely happy. But know that we are learning where we can and that we remain true to the mission that’s been behind Record Store Day from the start: Celebrating the culture of the record store. They are such a good thing to have around.

a hearty thank you to the folks at rsd for, again, surpassing all expectations. here's to next year!

i kinda like this cenataur approach to cover art, but that's about it (i wouldn't know a lady gaga song from a britney spears song...or if they even sound alike)

Lady Gaga Releases ‘Born This Way’ Album Cover Art

Lady Gaga is a half-motorcycle, half-woman, singing machine on the cover of her new album she calls, 'Born This Way!'

According to MTV News, the pop sultress unveiled the new cover art for Born This Way on Twitter on Saturday.

Her head appears at the front of motorcycle and her arms are the front forks on the cover art by Nick Knight, which is in black and white except for her red lips.

now this is what i call album cover art, one that makes your imagination work overtime....

Ipsissimus Reveal Tracklisting and Artwork

The New Haven, CT based blasphemers IPSISSIMUS have revealed the coverart and tracklisting for the bands Metal Blade Records debut.

Drummer Haimatokharmes fills us in on the artwork and layout for The Way of Descent: "IPSISSIMUS is very pleased to present the artwork for our upcoming Metal Blade debut, The Way of Descent. The cover, by Brooklyn, NY artist Micki Pellerano (www.mickipellerano.wordpress.com) features all manner of ritual act, executed by man and beast, conjuring an apparition of the Egyptian fertility goddess Hathor. (IPSISSIMUS heartily endorses procreation as well as annihilation). I might add that the inlay features a 'Satanic Seraph' design, conceived by myself while reading the Niebelungenslied on a train in Rhein-Westphalia, brilliantly executed by artist Michel Jansen, of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. (I liked this so much it's now on my drum head!) Finally, the layout was designed by Alessandra Benedetti, Brooklyn artist, editor of Heartworm Press (www.theheartworm.com), and designer of 23 WLVS Press, who did a top-notch job on very little notice in giving the album a dirty yet unified look."

and in music history for today:

In 1965, The film The T.A.M.I. Show (Teen Age Music International) featuring a star list of performers, including The Rolling Stones, James Brown, The Supremes, The Miracles, and Chuck Berry, opened in Britain to limited distribution under the title Teenage Command Performance. The movie would not be properly released in the U.K. until the following year.

In 1968, John Lennon, George Harrison and their wives left the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram in Rishikesh, India two weeks before their study was complete. Ringo and Paul had already left.

In 1974, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band appeared at the State Theatre, New Brunswick, New Jersey. The gig was unadvertised by the promoter, who gambled that word-of-mouth would be enough to fill the 550-seat venue, but only 250 people attended.

In 1980, 32-year old vocalist Brian Johnson replaced the late Bon Scott in AC/DC.

R.E.M. played their first show under the name R.E.M in 1980.

In 1980, Blondie scores their second Billboard number one hit with "Call Me", a song featured in the Richard Gere movie American Gigolo. The track was also a #1 in the UK.

In 1982, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel reunite for a European tour after the success of their New York Central Park concert the year before. Tensions between the pair cause them to split again before they can tour the US and by the time the album they were working on came out 18 months later, all traces of Garfunkel's contributions had been electronically removed.

In 2003, the oldest working musician in Britain, Conrad Leonard, died at the age of 104. Had worked with Cole Porter, Petula Clark and the BBC.

and in 2010, a week after Catholic Church officials published an article in the Vatican's L'Osservatore Romano newspaper that said they forgive John Lennon's remarks about The Beatles being "bigger than Jesus", Ringo Starr rejected their forgiveness. The newspaper's editors had written, "The Beatles said they were bigger than Jesus and put out mysterious messages, that were possibly even Satanic... (but) what would Pop music be like without the Beatles?" Ringo was unimpressed and replied "Didn't the Vatican say we were Satanic or possibly Satanic? And they've still forgiven us? I think the Vatican, they've got more to talk about than the Beatles." welll said ringo.....

birthday wishes to Mark Volman from The Turtles (1947) and Alan Price of the Animals, who turns a young 69 today

"Orbison...transcended all the genres--folk, country, rock and roll or just about anything. His stuff mixed all the styles and some that hadn't even been invented yet.... He sounded like he was singing from an Olympian mountaintop and he meant business."  - Bob Dylan, Chronicles Vol. 1

"Roy's ballads were always best when you were alone in the dark. They were scary. His voice was unearthly... I always wanted to sing like Roy Orbison..." - Bruce Springsteen

"... Roy Orbison! It was only because we were with Roy Orbison that we were there at all. He was definitely top of the bill... What a beacon in the southernmost gloom. The amazing Roy Orbison."
- Keith Richards, Life

"Roy the singer, people talk about him all the time, everyone curtsies to the voice, and so they should. The thing people don't talk about enough as far as I'm concerned is how innovative this music was, how radical in terms of its songwriting. As I become more interested in songwriting, you hit a wall where Roy Orbison is standing."  - Bono, 1999

A small independent record label enjoying modest successes in the late 1950s, Monument Records grew to become a major force in American rock and roll, country, jazz and rhythm & blues, its label identity synonymous with its biggest star, Roy Orbison. Other artists on the Monument label have included Kris Kristofferson, Boots Randolph, Dolly Parton, Ray Stevens, Tony Joe White, Charlie McCoy, Willie Nelson and others.

Best recognized around the world for his otherworldly voice and black sunglasses. Roy Orbison was both rock & roll pioneer and prototypical singer-songwriter, beginning with his first high school band (the Wink Westerners/Teen Kings) and shifting into mass consciousness in the 1960s with a string of singles for the Monument label that defined an artist and helped launch a label.

Orbison – along with a short list that included Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins – was one of the undisputed originators and architects of rock & roll at Sam Phillips' Sun Records. Orbison cut his first chart hit (it reached #1 on the local charts), "Ooby Dooby," for Sun in 1956, staying with the label for two years before a brief stint at RCA in 1958.

Roy Orbison signed with the newly emerging independent label Monument Records in mid-1959. While his second single for Monument, "Uptown," became his biggest hit as a performer since "Ooby Dooby," it was Orbison's third single for the label, "Only The Lonely (Know How I Feel)," which announced to the world the true artistry of Roy Orbison. The song peaked #2 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart, crossed over to #14 on the Billboard Black Singles chart, and rocketed up to #1 on the UK charts.

Orbison followed up the breakthrough with a pair of respectfully charting singles – "Blue Angel" (#9 Pop, #23 Black) and "I'm Hurtin'" (#27 Pop) – before knocking it out of the park with "Running Scared'," his first USA #1 Pop.

After that came an unbroken four-year string of Top 40 Hits – "Crying," "Candy Man," "Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream)," "Working for the Man," "Leah," "In Dreams," "Pretty Paper," "Blue Bayou," " Mean Woman Blues," "It's Over" – during which Roy Orbison became America's top-selling recording artist and one of the world's most celebrated entertainers.

Orbison played shows with Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, the Everly Brothers, the Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys, Jimmy Page, the Eagles, Bruce Springsteen, Chris Isaak, and many, many others, the man and music leaving a deep impact on them all. The monumental 1963 Roy Orbison World Tour, which featured Patsy Cline (in the weeks before her death) as a support act in the states, helped break the then-rising Beatles (Orbison fans themselves who'd recorded Roy's hit "Dream Baby" for a BBC radio broadcast in 1962) when they played support on the European leg of the tour. Orbison's profound musical and emotional influences may be heard in early Beatles singles (e.g. "Love Me Do" after "Candy Man," "Please Please Me" after "Only The Lonely," "Daytripper" after "Oh, Pretty Woman").

Roy Orbison was one of the few established hit-makers from the late 1950s and early 1960s to not only hold his ground, but to actually increase his popularity in the wake of the British Invasion. He maintained his popularity through music which displayed an extraordinary variety of themes, structure, tempo and rhythm and an authentic, emotional connection that transcended mere craft, exemplified in his signature classic, "Oh, Pretty Woman," recorded on August 1st, 1964. Written by Orbison with his new writing partner Bill Dees, "Oh, Pretty Woman" became Roy's biggest hit and is one of the most recognized and popular songs of all time. Released in August 1964 in the US and in September of that year in the UK, the song hit the #1 slot in virtually every country in the world where people had record players, selling some seven million copies that year.

And this was only the beginning...

Ahead of Roy were 23 world tours, 12 albums for MGM, his starring role in the 1967 MGM feature film "The Fastest Guitar Alive," the 1988 all-star Cinemax special "Roy Orbison and Friends, A Black and White Night," The Traveling Wilburys (with Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne), the Class of '55 reunion album (with Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins), television appearances on "Saturday Night Live" and "Austin City Limits," his 1988 Mystery Girl album, the 1992 posthumous collection King of Hearts (produced by Jeff Lynne), the posthumous hit singles "You Got It" and "I Drove All Night," not to mention lawsuits, deaths, fires, tragedies, and Grammy awards.

When Roy Orbison died in 1988, he had two albums in the Billboard Top 5. In 1990, the Pretty Woman soundtrack topped the charts. In 2010, Roy Orbison got his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in front of the Capitol Records Building alongside John Lennon, George Harrison, Ringo Starr and Garth Brooks.

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

Record Store Day News

on saturday, hours after the record stores opened, i took a quick look at eBay to see if any of the special vinyl record releases were up for sale. Yep, over 900 of them. i looked sunday and there were exactly 2,085 record store day items up for sale at 6pm (cst). and today, there are close to 2,200 items up for sale. how does this benefit the physical retail outlet when everything just shows up on the auction giant? do the record stores actually make a profit, when they only get a limited number of copies anyway? i guess everyone has the right to be a 'flipper'.....

i love the concept of rsd, however, as i stated before, they should include online retailers as well. if it is a celebration of vinyl, let's include all the vinyl vendors and quit drawing lines in the sand. it all ends up online anyway......

i found some interesting takes on this self-proclaimed 'vinyl holiday,' read on:

speaking of flippers:

Record Store Day Fallout 2011: How Much Those Exclusives Will Cost You Now

By Josiah Hughes

Following much fanfare and lead-up time, the 2011 edition of Record Store Day attracted droves of eager vinyl lovers to record stores across the globe as they sought exclusive releases on Saturday (April 16). There was, however, also a large pocket of record collectors looking to flip the exclusive releases, many of whom already made a pretty penny this weekend.

Just like last year, a quick search over on eBay reveals that some collector scum have made big bucks off of some Record Store Day exclusives. The biggest sale, by far, was Ed Banger Records' The Bee Sides, a box of five seven-inches featuring new and rare tracks from Justice, SebastiAn, Busy P and others. Of the few completed auctions with this set, someone in the UK shelled out approximately $485 Canadian. That's nearly $100 per seven-inch!

judge for yourself....

Actually, false rarities are saving vinyl

Author - Bryan C. Reed

“False rarities are killing vinyl.”

An anonymous internet comment is hardly something to pay much heed, but for some reason those five words have been rattling around my skull since I first encountered them a day ago.

The commenter was responding to an announcement of the split 7-inch Superchunk and Coliseum released for this year’s Record Store Day. The two songs, both Misfits covers, were released as free downloads long before the record was pressed in its edition of 2,000 copies. The record, this commenter seemed to believe, is utterly unnecessary.

But, I mean, of course it is. Isn’t every record? And isn’t every limited-edition collector’s piece an example of false rarity? They could press more, but they didn’t.

Jack White hails Record Store Day, new releases

By CHRIS TALBOTT - THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Music fans started lining up outside Jack White's Third Man Records shortly after midnight, vying for something special on Record Store Day.

White was more than willing to accommodate them, opening his store a little early Saturday for vinyl enthusiasts.

"Record stores are closing all over the place, yet vinyl record sales are the only thing growing in the music industry," White told The Associated Press. "So it's a beautiful thing that everyone can come together and release these special releases, whether they're brand new or old or obscure or never released tracks, whatever they are, it's really cool that people can get out and buy them. I mean look at how many people are here to buy records. That's pretty cool. Very cool."

interesting take on rsd in the uk:

Record Store Day: how was it for you?

There were early morning queues, a scramble for 7ins and at least one broken foot. But in the melee of Record Store Day, did anyone else notice a lack of women?

For all the bluster that's surrounded Record Store Day this year, the 800-strong queue that curled around London's Rough Trade East at 9.30am on Saturday was eerily quiet. Blame mild manners, hangovers and pre-emptive disillusionment for the calm.

Adam Shoesmith joined the queue at 7.45am. "I'm after the Radiohead 12in, Beth Ditto's EP and Danger Mouse's single for a friend." The hugely limited Radiohead single eluded him – at present, there are 65 copies for sale on eBay – but he did manage to pick up Ditto's EP with Simian Mobile Disco.

In Age of Digital Music, Vinyl Gets Second Life in a Brooklyn Factory

By KRISTOFER RÍOS

In an industrial and uninviting stretch of Brooklyn, near several strip clubs and a factory that makes electrical tubing, Thomas Bernich’s small plant recycles vinyl and preserves a fading piece of history.

In fact, Mr. Bernich’s workplace in Sunset Park is one of the few of its kind in New York City and in the country.

Inside the one-story, red-brick factory on 42nd Street, boxes of discarded albums from used-record stores are piled high on wooden pallets, awaiting their end and a new beginning

At the SCAD Record Fair, a new generation gets hip to vinyl

By Bill DeYoung

Video killed the radio star, the compact disc killed the vinyl record, downloading killed the compact disc.

Vinyl, once thought to be as extinct as the passenger pigeon, is making a surprise comeback. According to Nielsen's SoundScan, vinyl record sales have increased significantly over the past four years. In 2009, 2.5 million albums were sold in this country, up from 1.88 million in 2008.

Back in 2001, when the CD reigned supreme, the numbers for vinyl barely registered at all.

At last weekend's third Savannah Record Fair, hundreds of young people - college students, from all appearances, kids who probably weren't even born when those 12-inch slabs of plastic were already starting to disappear from retail racks - combed through boxes and boxes of vintage vinyl LPs. There were very few CDs for sale

Vinyl diehards find their groove

By Ryan Cormier, edmontonjournal.com

EDMONTON — Dwight Young has collected records since 1964, since the night his Mother marched him to a neighbour’s television to watch the Beatles perform on the Ed Sullivan Show. He was six years old.

As he flicks through albums in fruit crates, elbow-to-elbow with fellow collectors, Young has never lost his love for the needle and vinyl.

“There’s just something about the sound of vinyl, especially the originals, there’s just something magical about it,” he said Sunday at the Edmonton Music Collectors Show.

great story about the seminal band and what it means to other musicians:

Slash, Korn, Slayer, Slipknot, Anthrax, Hollywood Undead, Asking Alexandria, Five Finger Death Punch, Michelle Rodriguez and More Talk When They Discovered Metallica

Every hard rock fan has a Metallica story.

There was that moment of discovery either via a friend who had already seen the light, the radio, MTV back when they actually played music videos, the Heshers in the last row of math class, or one of the million VH1 specials about the band. There's nothing quite like the first time hearing Metallica either. It's life-changing for anyone who keeps themselves open to the music. No one will ever forget seeing the music video for "One", hearing the intro to "Enter Sandman", or falling under Master of Puppets' spell. Even for people who aren't fans, the first Metallica experience is paramount. However, for those of us who get it (and there are millions upon millions worldwide), it's a landmark moment.

Given the significance of discovering Metallica and with The Big Four taking over Indio next Saturday April 23, ARTISTdirect.com editor and Dolorauthor Rick Florino spoke to numerous musicians and celebrities about the first time they heard Metallica and what the band means to them.

Topshelf Records Release Debut LP From By Surprise

Topshelf Records has announced the debut 12" from By Surprise (Haddon Heights, NJ), "Mountain Smashers," is now available. First pressing of the vinyl will be limited to 500 (400 Black and 100 Smoke).

Safely guarded behind four pairs of glasses and an arsenal of awkward tendencies, the members of By Surprise have spent an equal amount of time combing through the forgotten dust-filled grooves of 7-inch records released during the '90s indie label boom, as they have with the off-beat and inspirational works of Henry David Thoreau, Jack Kerouac, and Douglas Adams.

this just amazes me, maybe because i don't have a cell phone taped to my ear (heck, i don't even own one!). a program or 'app' that attempts to recreate the sound of a vinyl record playing your favorite song. and it sells......go figure....

VinylLove enhances your music with gramophone record crackle and pops

The fondest memories of my childhood involve listening to my uncle’s vinyl record collection (gramophone records we used to call them). A few decades later, our music is delivered as crystal clear digital files, but many audiophiles (rightfully) point out that digital lacks the warmth, depth and texture of analogue.

If that wasn’t the case, there would be no cottage industry of limited vinyl releases for niche markets such as DJing, audiophiles, hobbyists, etc. You’d think that in the 21st century there would be an app to recreate the magic of vinyl. Enter VinylLove, an iPad music player from Swedish developers Color Monkey and BinaryPeak.

pitchfork has this great album cover:

Thee Oh Sees Announce New Album

The San Franciscan garage-punk noisemakers Thee Oh Sees have been steadily cranking out slabs of messy psychedelic spaz for years. Their new album comes just a year after their last one, Warm Slime, and a few months after the band knocked me on my ass at SXSW. The 16-track new album comes bearing the awesome title Castlemania, and In the Red will release it on June 14. That's the cover art above.
