DEFTONES To Begin Work On New Album
DEFTONES frontman Chino Moreno tells Billboard.com that the band is planning to spend the next few weeks working on material for the follow-up to 2010's "Diamond Eyes".
"We're going to have a month off [from touring], but in that month we're talking about going in and starting to write again, maybe even two or three weeks in a rehearsal spot just recording ideas and keeping it going," he said. "[The process will resume in September] so if all goes well hopefully we'll have some product for early next year."
Animal Style Records To Release 12" Debut From Born Without Bones
Animal Style Records has announced that on May 17th it will release "Say Hello," the debut full-length from Born Without Bones (Milford, MA). Originally self-released digitally last year by the band via Bandcamp as a free/pay-what-you-want download, Animal Style will give this record a proper vinyl release with a limited pressing of 500 12-inches on three colorways (100 black/200 sky blue/200 wheat yellow). Each copy will come with a full album download, plus an additional eight unreleased B-side tracks.
"Weird Al" Yankovic to Release "Alpocalypse" on June 21st
Grammy Award-winning artist "Weird Al" Yankovic is set to release his 13th studio album Alpocalypse (Jive Records) on June 21st. It is his first full studio release since the 2006 Grammy nominated album Straight Outta Lynwood that spawned the platinum hit single "White & Nerdy."
Alpocalypse will be available in both standard and deluxe formats and will include the much talked about Lady Gaga parody, "Perform This Way," that generated two million Youtube hits within two days and at its fever pitch was the #5 trending Twitter topic in the world. The deluxe set will have a bonus DVD containing 10 music videos.
The highly anticipated "Perform This Way" video is currently being shot in LA with Al once again taking the helm as director.
"Weird Al" Yankovic has reigned for three decades as the best-selling comedy artist in history, with over 12 million albums sold. He has won 3 Grammy Awards with 12 career nominations. With the recent release of his children's book When I Grow Up (HarperCollins), Weird Al adds "New York Times best-selling author" to his list of accomplishments.
Mötley Crüe have revealed further details of their forthcoming tour with Poison and New York Dolls, including drummer Tommy Lee’s show-stopping drum solo gimmick.
Lee’s solos are always a point of great discussion among Crüe fans – over the years they’ve included everything from a rolling drum kit to a magic trick involving a gun-toting astronaut.

and in music history for today:
In 1956, for the first time in "Billboard" chart history, five singles were in both the pop and the R&B top 10. The singles were Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel," Carl Perkins' "Blue Suede Shoes," Little
Richard's "Long Tall Sally," the Platters' "Magic Touch," and Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers' "Why Do Fools Fall in Love."
In 1960, in the aftermath of the payola scandal, Billboard magazine reports that many radio stations are adopting what they called a "better music" format and banning Rock and Roll.
In 1964, 'The Beatles' Second Album' reaches #1 on the Billboard LP chart in just its second week of release. It was the first album ever to make it to the top that quickly.
The Rolling Stones made their second appearance on Ed Sullivan in 1965.
In 1969, Funk Brother session drummer Benny Benjamin died. Benjamin played with many of Motown’s biggest hit-makers, including The Four Tops, Temptations, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes and Stevie Wonder.
In 1970, one-hit wonder Norman Greenbaum was at #1 on the U.K. singles chart with “Spirit in the Sky.”
In 1972, Bruce Springsteen auditioned for Columbia's A&R man John Hammond both in his office and at the Gaslight Club in New York at night.
Also in 1972, Les Harvey (Stone the Crow) was electrocuted on stage in Swansea, Wales. He died several hours later at the age of 25.
In 1979, the Who performed their first concert after the death of Keith Moon. Kenney Jones, formerly of the Faces, was the new drummer.
Pink Floyd's hit single "Another Brick in the Wall (Part II)", with its chorus of kids chanting "We Don't Need No Education", is banned by the South African government in 1980. Black children, upset about inferior education, adopt the song as their anthem. The government says the song is "prejudicial to the safety of the state."
In 1989, police were called when a man walked into a Los Angeles jewelry store wearing a wig and false mustache and teeth. It turned out to be Michael Jackson.
In 1991, R.E.M.'s video for Losing My Religion was banned in Ireland for its religious imagery.
In 2005, Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker reunited as Cream for the first of four nights at Royal Albert Hall in London. Tickets were being sold for nearly $1,000 on eBay, while fans from all over the globe flew in to catch the performances.
In 2006, Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards was released from a hospital in New Zealand after suffering a mild concussion when he fell out of a coconut tree while on holiday in Fiji. He was airlifted to Auckland's Ascot Hospital for observation, where he underwent a brain scan.
In 2007, nearly 2,000 musicians gathered in the Polish city of Wroclaw to play “Hey Joe” by Jimi Hendrix. It was the largest guitar ensemble in recorded history, which landed them in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Guitar legend Fred Lincoln "Link" Wray Jr was born in 1929 (died November 5, 2005)
birthdays today include Engelbert Humperdinck (1936), Leslie Gore (1946) and Lou Gramm of Foreigner (1950), among many others.
For three weeks in a row the top record has pushed past the $10k mark. For the past two weeks Sex Pistols rarities have topped the list, and this weeks it's The Beatles original Stereo pressing of "Please Please Me", however the top price of over $13k does not come close to the sales of the Sex Pistol's records, which have been the highest recorded for two years.

Will this seven LP Pepper set spice up your jazz record collection?

Art Pepper Ronnie Scott Stand Issued Complete by Michael Fremer April 01, 2011
Alto sax bop legend Art Pepper (1925-1982) had accrued a lot of mileage but few OnePass points when he blew into London with his trio in June of 1980 to play a fortnight gig at the famous Ronnie Scott’s Club.
The group consisted of the hard charging classically trained Bulgarian émigré Milcho Leviev on piano, Tony Dumas on bass and Carl Burnett on drums. The latter two had worked in a trio with pianist George Cables and so already played in lockstep.
If you have any interest at all in Pepper the musician (and if you’re considering purchase of this pricey but astonishing 7 LP set chances are good you do), you should read “Straight Life The Story of Art Pepper” by Art and Laurie Pepper (Schirmer Books).
The autobiography is a can’t-put-it-down read wherein lays it all out: the junkie life, prison, playing jazz with the greats from Sonny Stitt to Benny Carter and most of all his unremorseful look at his own flawed character revealed without an ounce of self-pity.
“So between the Percodan and the Dexamyl and the Cosanyl and pot and juicing very heavy I was doing good because I wasn’t using heroin,” he writes about half way through the book. When that’s “doing good” you can only imagine his descriptions of “doing bad.”
If ‘50s jazz is your bag this book gives you an inside look at the lifestyle of the musicians who played and lived it from a white-hipster’s POV, written with charm, sincerity and most especially brutal honesty.
But we’re here to review the music and records not the book and even if you don’t buy the book, this package gives you plenty to chew on musically and in the written text that's included in the Mosaic style booklet that accompanies the seven LPs.
Pepper and his group arrived at Ronnie Scott’s not knowing how they would be received. To their great surprise, the response, not to mention the attendance, was overwhelming.
Appropriately, as word of the superb sets spread through London, the owners of Mole Jazz, then the city’s pre-eminent jazz record show, inquired about a live recording.
Arrangements were made and recordings were made of the Friday and Saturday sets June 27 and 28 1980. For some reason the credits on the original LPs claim Sunday night the 29th was also recorded.
The multi-mike analogue recording was mixed live to two track stereo without noise reduction, limiting, compression or equalization and when Ray Staff cut the original lacquers back in 1980 he used no noise reduction, limiting, compression or equalization (other than RIAA of course!).
Mole issued Blues For the Fisherman (Stereo Mole 1) a single LP containing two tracks per side as The Milcho Leviev Quartet since Pepper was then signed to the Galaxy label in America. Pepper wrote the liner notes extolling the virtues of Leviev’s piano playing and while they provided legal cover for the enterprise, they ring true as you’ll hear if you take the plunge and buy this set.
In 1981 Mole issued True Blues (Stereo Mole 5), a four tune follow up from the same date that included “Straight Life” but soon both records went out of print. Linn Music, a division of the audio manufacturer that makes the Sondek turntable briefly brought the first album back into print in the early ‘90s, as I recall it, pressed using the original metal parts and then that went out of print as well.
Art’s widow Laurie recently found the original tapes. She’d never played them but when that finally happened, she discovered they contained the complete recordings made over the course of those three evenings, complete with Art Pepper’s between song song.
Pure Pleasure licensed the material, a flat transfer was made and the tapes once again were given to Ray Staff, who edited where appropriate. Staff left all of the music and the between song patter, to produce this seven LP set that’s never less than fully riveting even though four tunes were repeated on the second day of recording, perhaps to assure there would be good takes for the final original LP and as is always the case in live performances there’s some time filling and vamping.
Nonetheless if you’re a Pepper fan, you’ll treasure every moment here that includes seventeen previously unreleased performances along with the eight already released on the two Mole Records releases.
Pepper plays throughout with the high energy enthusiasm, virtuosity and creativity of someone half his age, while his lyricism and gorgeous, sensitive ballad playing could only come from someone of his age.
Pepper picks up a clarinet—his first instrument—and plays a memorable take on Parker’s “Ornithology” and though he mumbles an apology afterwards, clearly none was needed.
You’ll agree that his enthusiasm for the sparkling playing of Leviev was well-deserved. The rest of the rhythm section plays with equal precision and sympathy.
The live recording quality is superb (though as with any live recording there are occasional glitches): intimate and closely miked, it presents a small club front row perspective that’s long on power, timbral accuracy and dynamics and short on room ambience. Given a choice, I’ll take the former every time. Pepper stands center stage in front of bassist Dumas, while Leviev’s piano is stage left and drummer Burnett’s kit is stage right. Sufficient mike leakage produces a coherent, well-integrated three-dimensional picture.
The Pallas pressing quality is high, the packaging, including a cloth textured box first class and the annotation, complete. There are four interviews with Pepper from 1979 and 1980, an illuminating essay written last year by Alun Morgan who provided the liner notes for the second original Mole album, nice photos and complete Mosaic-like credits.
As you listen you’ll hear Pepper at one point towards the end of the three-night stand single out a patron who attended every performance. Pepper hands him a magnum of champagne.
After you’ve gone through this seven LP set for the first time you’ll feel like popping the cork on a bottle yourself to celebrate Art Pepper and your good sense in buying and consuming this set that a decade ago would have been impossible to think could ever be issued on vinyl LPs cut from analogue tape.
Thanks to Pure Pleasure’s Tony Hickmott for having the guts to proceed with such a costly set that sounds considerably richer, fuller and more natural than the Linn reissue I have and that sounds plenty good too. It was worth the risk and is worth every penny of its considerable cost.
Thanks to Michael over at http://www.musicangle.com/ for the exclusive rights to reprint this material. Stop by MusicAngle.com for more reviews and features.
OZZY OSBOURNE: 'The Pressure Of Doing A New BLACK SABBATH Album Is Enormous'
Last week Ozzy Osbourne stopped by the Rolling Stone offices to discuss his new album "Scream", his forthcoming world tour, the death of Ronnie James Dio and the possibility of a BLACK SABBATH reunion (see video below). "I love those guys — Bill [Ward, drums], Tony [Iommi, guitar] and Geezer [Butler, bass]," he told Rolling Stone about a possible return to SABBATH. "I never say never anymore because you never know what's going to come around."
It looks like Iggy Pop fans won’t have a shortage of new material from the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer for quite some time. For one, he’s working on a new solo album that will follow-up his jazz-inspired 2009 record, Preliminaries. Pop told Billboard.com that the record will be “mostly ballads” written by other people, including “Michelle” by The Beatles and “Everybody’s Talkin’” by Fred Neil.
Tom Morello to Release 'Union Town' to Benefit Unions
Tom Morello declared he was a union man to protest Governor Scott Walker's anti-union bill in Wisconsin. Consequently, he's putting his money where his mouth is so to speak and releasing the album 'Union Town' via New West Records digitally on May 17, with CD and vinyl releases to follow on July 19.
All profits from Union Town will benefit The America Votes Labor Unity Fund via SaveWorkers.org.
The set will contain eight pro-union songs: three Morello originals, as well as Woody Guthrie's classic "This Land Is Your Land" (including the more radical, often censored verses).
The song "Union Town" is available now at SaveWorkers.org.

MEGADETH's 'Peace' Expanded 25th-Anniversary Reissue Rocks Times Square
A photo of the upcoming expanded, commemorative 25th-anniversary reissue edition of MEGADETH's "Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?" album being advertised on the world's largest digital display system located in New York's Times Square via the 126-foot-wide, 47-foot-tall Reuters sign can be seen at Blabbermouth.
The 7,400-square-foot digital billboard, which soars 23 stories into the sky above Times Square, reaches more than 1.5 million people per day.
PR Newswire in 2007 entered into an agreement with TimesSquare2, a division of Reuters, to make its customers' photos and images viewable on the Reuters sign. The billboard features a regular stream of PR Newswire customer photos throughout each day. The photos are accompanied by a news-release headline, and are displayed in fifteen-second increments.
The Mick Ronson assisted effort (he produced nine of the album's 16 tracks, with Deerhunter's Lockett Pundt helping on other tracks), is due to be released on June 7 via Vice. The press release says that "the production tests the limits of modern amplification technology, harkening to the full, meaty sound of Fun House or Lola Versus Powerman or whatever your favourite record of 1970 is."
In April, the band will kick off an expansive North American tour.

and in music history for today:
In 1957, Elvis recorded "Jailhouse Rock." The song went on to top the Cashbox Best Sellers list, the Billboard Hot 100, the R&B chart and even the Country and Western chart. It also became the first single to enter the UK chart at number 1. The tune was written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller specifically for a scene in the movie of the same name.
In 1960, Fats Domino recorded "Walking to New Orleans."
In 1964, the Beatles received $140,000 for the rights to having their pictures included in packages of bubble gum in the USA.
In 1966, the Young Rascals enjoy the first of 14 Billboard Top 40 hits when "Good Lovin" reached #1
In 1970, Twiggs Lyndon, the road manager for The Allman Brothers Band, was arrested for murder after he stabbed a club manager during an argument over a contract. At the ensuing trial, Lyndon’s lawyers argue that he had been temporarily insane at the time of the incident and that touring with the Allman Brothers would drive anyone insane. Lyndon was acquitted.
In 1976, the Who's drummer Keith Moon paid nine cab drivers to block-off both ends of a New York street so he could throw the contents of his hotel room out of the window.
In 1977, Led Zeppelin broke a new world concert attendance record when playing to 76,229 at the Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan. The Who held the venue’s previous record with 75,962 in 1975.
In 1983, American blues legend Muddy Waters (McKinley Morganfield) died at age 68 in his sleep at his home in Westmont, Illinois. He was a major influence on many British blues acts including The Yardbirds, Cream, and Led Zeppelin. The Rolling Stones even named themselves after one of his songs.
Phil Collins released "Sussudio" in 1985.
The Beatles' "Help!", "Rubber Soul" and "Revolver" were released on compact disc in 1987.
Nirvana signed a recording contract with Geffen’s DGC label for $290,000 in 1991.
In 1999, 51 year old Darrell Sweet, drummer of the Scottish Rock group Nazareth, suffered a fatal heart attack just as the band was embarking on the second leg of a US tour. The band had arrived at the Amphitheater in New Albany, Indiana, when Sweet began feeling ill and within minutes went into cardiac arrest. He was rushed to the New Albany Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Nazareth is best remembered for their 1976 hit "Love Hurts", which was first recorded by The Everly Brothers in 1960.
In 2007, Zola Taylor, who broke gender barriers as the first female member of the 1950s R&B group The Platters, singing on their hit "The Great Pretender", died from complications of pneumonia. She was 69.
and in 2008, a giant inflatable pig, which floated away during a Roger Waters concert, was recovered in tatters. Two families from La Quinta, California, who found what was left of the inflatable animal, decided to share four lifetime tickets to the Coachella festival that were offered as part of the reward.

The multi-Grammy-nominated producer said of the Royal Wedding recording: "This is a great honor and an enormous responsibility. The wedding means so much to millions of people all over the world -- we had to capture every note and every nuance perfectly and have the recording ready within minutes of the end of the ceremony."
Dickon Stainer, President of Decca Records, said: "This will be the first Official Royal Wedding Album ever to enter the worldwide digital charts. It will capture a piece of history for a new generation."
David Joseph, Chairman and CEO of Universal Music UK, said: "The Official Album for The Royal Wedding will complement everyone's personal memories of the event. Thanks to digital technology we will be able to deliver it worldwide almost instantly -- it will be the fastest we have ever released an album of this stature."

With big reputable annual techno events like this past weekend’s Bal en Blanc bringing tourism dollars to Montreal and fuelling the city’s profitable after hours scene, it was clear for Peet Bernard, better known as DJ Peet AnimA, that the next step was to tap into people wanting to become professional DJs. A look at the city’s only operational DJ school.

The Complete ‘Abbey Road’ Sessions Exhibition
By Guy White
A small but perfectly formed exhibition showcasing photographer, Iain MacMillan's, snaps from the iconic Beatles' shoot.
I’ve often wondered how you get to be immortalised on the cover of a classic album, without being in the band. Paul Cole did it. He was an American tourist who happened to be on vacation in London. On 8 August 1969, as he walked around the streets of St John’s Wood waiting for his wife, he stumbled across four guys being photographed on a zebra crossing. He watched for a while as they went there and back again. And again. And one more time. And that was it. Without knowing it at the time, that’s how he came to be captured for posterity on one of the most famous photographs of all time – the cover of the Beatles’ Abbey Road LP, standing to the left of John Lennon’s head on the album sleeve. But, as a new exhibition reveals, he might so easily not have been on the cover. ‘Beatles and Bystanders: the Abbey Road sessions’ on show at Snap Galleries’ Piccadilly space in central London, uncovers, for the first time, at least a dozen other characters who might equally have featured on the cover of one of the most important albums in the history of popular music, if a different frame had been chosen for the album sleeve.
Scottish photographer Iain MacMillan (1938-2006) was the man behind the camera. He took just six photographs that day...........
found the descriptions invigorating and reflective, loved the story:
The beauty of a vinyl record
By Sarah Jorgensen
While our society has begun to fully enter the digital content stage, it's good to get a reminder of what the world was like before the Internet existed. Over Easter vacation, I opted to stay with a good friend of mine in Orange County rather than make the tedious journey back to the east coast. As an avid music fan herself, my friend suggested that we visit a record store in Laguna Beach called the Sound Spectrum.
Now, if you have not listened to my USDRadio program, read any of my previous columns or met me in person, you probably do not understand my deep seeded and, honestly, pretty extreme love of music. When I walked into the Sound Spectrum, I felt like I was in heaven.
RAVE ON BUDDY HOLLY CELEBRATES ROCK ICON’S 75th BIRTHDAY AND ENDURING LEGACY
Daringly Original Tribute Collection Features My Morning Jacket, The Black Keys, Modest Mouse, Nick Lowe, Florence + The Machine, Cee Lo Green, Paul McCartney, Kid Rock, Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Julian Casablancas and more - Available June 28, 2011
From Fantasy Records /Concord Music Group
In his short-lived but extraordinary life, Buddy Holly left behind a body of work so enthralling, his enduring influence is nearly impossible to overstate. The melodic joy and fierce independent streak at the core of his artistry is profoundly felt on Rave On Buddy Holly, a 19-song collection of indelible Holly covers by a rich assemblage of current musical visionaries and creative kindred spirits. Fantasy/Concord will release Rave On Buddy Holly June 28th, 2011.
Rave On’s striking collection of musicians share Holly’s insurgent rebel spirit and outsider point of view. The artists cross generations and styles, collectively and defiantly embracing Holly’s distinctive rough and tumble inventiveness. Very few songwriters could inspire passionately personal, fearless cover versions from performers such as My Morning Jacket, Cee Lo Green, Justin Townes Earle, The Black Keys, Florence + The Machine, She & Him, Modest Mouse, Paul McCartney, Julian Casablancas, Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Fiona Apple and John Brion, Graham Nash, The Detroit Cobras, Kid Rock, John Doe, Karen Elson, Nick Lowe and Jenny O. Which is part of what makes this much more than a mere “tribute album.”
Rave On Buddy Holly steers clear of the reverent re-creations typically found on similar projects; the artists clearly felt free to explore radically new interpretations. Florence + The Machine bring an industrial New Orleans vibe to “Not Fade Away” (with help from Bayou icon Ivan Neville on keys). The Black Keys’ elemental accompaniment touches the emotional core of “Dearest” while Modest Mouse takes “That’ll Be the Day” into truly avant-garde territory. Cee Lo Green’s exquisite vocals, for example, echo among handclaps and percussion on his epic reading of “Baby, You’re So Square.” Paul McCartney’s take on the originally lilting “It’s So Easy” is a raw, propulsive excursion filled with boisterous spoken ad-libs. Lou Reed lays down a blazing “Peggy Sue,” replete with overdriven guitars and loopy keyboards. The romantic underpinnings of Holly’s music are cleverly revealed in Rave On’s multiple male-female pairings: Apple and Brion, Reed, Elson and (husband/producer) Jack White and She & Him.
Known for his work with such directors as Martin Scorsese, Wes Anderson and Todd Haynes, esteemed film-music supervisor Randall Poster was sought out to produce and oversee the project. “As the tracks from various contributors were gathered for the album,” explains Poster “we seemed to be gathering pieces of a complex and original puzzle … that traces back to the roots of rock and roll and shapes so much of the music that followed.”
Poster gives special recognition to producing partner Geyla Robb and her overall influence on Rave On’s exceptional blend of tender toughness. Poster also credits the album’s richness to the various track producers, such as Matt Sweeney, Joe Henry, Jack White and C.C. Adcock.
A true pop pioneer whose astonishing tunes boasted rock ‘n’ roll punch, irresistible hooks and boundary-pushing sonic sweep, Buddy Holly would be 75-years-old on September 7th of this year. Sadly, of course, he died in 1959 at age 22. But Holly’s music never died, and has exerted a profound influence on virtually every part of the pop music soundscape. His sparkling hooks, tender lyrics and elegantly concise compositions set the bar for all the rock, country and pop tunesmiths who followed in his brilliant wake. A bold affirmation that proves his music, on the eve of his 75th birthday, is more relevant than ever, Rave On Buddy Holly tips its collective hat with love and appreciation.

and in music history for the day:
In 1958, David Seville's novelty tune, "Witch Doctor" peaks at #1 on Billboard Magazine's music chart and would go on to be the fourth best selling song of the year.
1958, Alan Freed’s Big Beat Show played two shows at the Central High School Auditorium in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The tour featured Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Frankie Lymon, Buddy Holly, The Diamonds, Billy Ford, Danny & The Juniors, The Chantels, Larry Williams, Screaming Jay Hawkins and The Pastels.
In 1967, "This Diamond Ring" by Gary Lewis And The Playboys is certified Gold. Although he will have more Top Twenty hits, this is Lewis' only Gold record.
In 1968, The Broadway Musical Hair opened in New York for its first performance. The show featured songs that would become Rock and Roll standards like "Aquarius / Let the Sunshine In", "Good Morning Starshine", "Easy to Be Hard" and the title song. The production ran for 1,729 performances, finally closing on July 1st, 1972.
In 1973, Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon was at #1 in America, going on to enjoy a record-breaking 741 weeks on the Billboard album chart, eventually selling over 45 million copies worldwide.
In 1975, Tom “Big Daddy” Donahue, the pioneering American disc jockey who wrote the article “AM Radio is Dead and Its Rotting Corpse is Stinking up the Airwaves” for Rolling Stone, died from a heart attack. Donahue was voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, one of only three DJs to receive that honor.
In 1979, Blondie scored their first U.S. #1 single with “Heart of Glass,” also a chart-topper in the U.K.
In 1980, Tommy Caldwell, the bassist and original frontman for The Marshall Tucker Band, died from injuries suffered from a car crash. He was 30 years old.
In 1987 - For the first time, a compact disc of an album was released before its vinyl version. The album was "The Art of Excellence" by Tony Bennett.
R.E.M.'s "Dead Letter Office" was released in the US in 1987.
In 1988, B.W. Stevenson, who had a 1973 hit with "My Maria", died after heart surgery at the age of 38. He also wrote Three Dog Night's 1973 hit "Shambala". The "B.W." reportedly stood for "Buckwheat."
2003 - The iTunes Music Store opened with over 200,000 items to purchase.
2004 - The iTunes Music Store marked its first anniversary with over 70 million songs sold. and vinyl lives on, despite of it!
In 2010, Corrado "Connie" Codarini, an original member of The Four Lads, passed away at the age of 80. The Canadian singing group placed twelve songs in the Billboard Top 40 between 1955 and 1958, including "Moments To Remember", "No, Not Much" and "Standing On The Corner".
birthday wishes to Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth (1953)
DEAR JERRY:Been wracking my brain to come up with the top-rated R&B and C&W artists who never once appeared on any of the Pop/Rock charts.
It seems like every big name I come up with had something cross over, even far-fetched as Hank Williams (“Jambalaya”) and Lonnie Johnson (“Tomorrow Night”).
Who are your choices for this interesting title?
—Cary LaSalle, Terre Haute, Ind.
DEAR CARY: First let's name this dubious honor. How about C.C. (Crossover Challenged)?
You suggest referencing “any” Pop/Rock charts (singles, albums, etc.), but should that include those regionally successful record charts Billboard described as “Bubbling Under the Hot 100.”
Over its life (1959-1985), this addendum listed from a few to a few dozen selections, about 58% of which graduated to the Hot 100.
If we do not count those bubblers, then Mel Tillis is the C&W winner of the C.C. crown. If we do, then we skip over Mel and the answer is Earl Thomas Conley.
The same goes for the R&B genre. Omit those whose highest position came while Bubbling Under and Phyllis Hyman is the pick. Among R&B non-bubblers, Sonny Thompson is most Crossover Challenged.
DEAR JERRY:Because my favorite music decade is the 1960s, I was disappointed to read a blog that says hardly any of the top superstars won a Grammy in the '60s.
Non-winners include the Rolling Stones; Beach Boys; 4 Seasons; Supremes; Connie Francis; Roy Orbison; Brenda Lee; and many others.
If not the giants in the field at the time, then why?
—Martha Proctor, Cleveland
roger miller & andy williams
DEAR MARTHA: Grammys in those days mostly went to folks who neither rocked nor rolled.
Despite the immeasurable impact of the British Invasion and the rise of Motown in the '60s, very rarely did an artist from these genres win in any of the key categories, especially Best Rock & Roll Recording.
For 1964, instead of the Beatles' “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” the No. 1 record of the year, Petula Clark's ”Downtown“ took the Grammy for Best Rock & Roll Recording.
The Best Rhythm & Blues Recording of '64 should have been either “My Guy” (Mary Wells) or “Baby Love” (Supremes) but went to jazz singer Nancy Wilson for “How Glad I Am.”
These are great recordings by Petula and Nancy, but neither is considered R&R or R&B by anyone I know.
The inexplicable choices continue:
The Best Contemporary (Rock & Roll) single of 1965 was another no-brainer. It should have been “(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction” (Rolling Stones), the No. 1 hit of that year AND the entire decade.
Grammy voters instead chose Roger Miller's “King of the Road,” an excellent country ballad that ranks zero on a rock and roll scale of 100.
Proving that two wrongs rarely make a right, “King of the Road,” also won for Best Rock & Roll Male Vocal Performance. My pick would have been “Like a Rolling Stone” (Bob Dylan).
Mysteriously, “King of the Road” also won in identical categories for C&W. If you're asking how it can possibly be both, you are not alone.
As for Best Rock & Roll Vocal Group of 1965, how could it not be the Beatles? Even the Rolling Stones; Beach Boys; 4 Seasons; or Supremes would have been acceptable.
Incredulously, the Best Contemporary (Rock & Roll) Group for '65 turned out to be the Statler Brothers, a country music quartet with only one Top 100 hit for the entire decade (“Flowers on the Wall”).
Oh yes, the Grammy for Best Rock & Roll Recording of 1962 went to Bent Fabric's piano instrumental, “Alley Cat.” No recognition is even made of the umpteen-million-selling hit that defined '62, as well as the first third of the decade: “The Twist” by Chubby Checker.
I know it was the '60s, but what were these people smoking?
IZ ZAT SO? Roger Miller established an impressive record for his records in 1964 and '65.
For those two years, Roger won 11 Grammys, the most ever by anyone in back-to-back years:
Best of 1964: C&W Single; C&W Song; C&W Album; C&W Male Vocal Performance; and New C&W Artist. The first four categories are for “Dang Me.”
Best of 1965: Contemporary (R&R) Single; C&W Single; C&W Song; R&R Male Vocal Performance; C&W Male Vocal Performance; C&W Album. The first five categories are for “King of the Road,” the album is “The Return of Roger Miller.”

30 Greatest Album Covers Of All Time
One of the most overlooked consequences of the current digitialization of music is its effects on the artform that is the album cover. Once upon a time, if you wanted to buy an album, you would meander into your local record store and browse through the album sections, and lo! and behold! you were mesmorized by amazing cover art as large as your head. Today? Click, download, and that’s it. Of course, if you’re fortunate, the album art might take up a square inch of your iPod screen.
In honor of this lost art, we had compiled a list of our 30 favorite album covers of all time.

interesting record store story:
In tune with those who love music
By Dyke Hendrickson
NEWBURYPORT — In the 35 years that Richard Osborne has run Dyno Records, he has witnessed the arrival of cassettes, CDs, discount chains and (free) music swapping.
The Middle Street store has prevailed over many forces, and it appears that the persistent Osborne is going to keep the doors open until the Fat Lady sings.
"New ways of acquiring songs has hurt the business in recent years," said the soft-spoken Osborne, "and locally, the poor economy has also affected sales at stores like mine.
"But we still have people who really love music, and we've been successful at selling vinyl albums again and also second-hand records. There are some bright spots."
cool story about what the beatles were to george martin:
Sir George Martin: ‘The Beatles Aren’t The Beatles to Me’
Michael Wright
One can forgive Sir George Martin for not doing too much press these days. The former Beatles producer and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, who turned 85 earlier this year, has not produced an album since 2006’s Beatles mash-up, Love, for Cirque du Soleil. Beyond that, he’s answered every conceivable question about his former colleagues one could ask. But with a new documentary set to air on the BBC, Martin sat down with The Independent to talk about his career, and yes, in particular, those magical days with the Fab Four.
“I wasn’t music at all. It was comedy,” Martin said of the quality that first drew him to the group at their first audition in 1962.
In 1963, Little Peggy March started a three-week run at #1 on the U.S. singles chart with “I Will Follow Him.” At 15 years, one month and 13 days old, Little Peggy March became the youngest female singer to have a U.S. #1.
John Lennon's "In His Own Write", a collection of funny poems and drawings, was published in the U.S in 1964.
Simon & Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson" was released in 1968.
In 1969, Joe Cocker makes his American debut on the Ed Sullivan Show before embarking on a tour.
In 1971, the Grateful Dead appeared at The Fillmore East in New York City. The Beach Boys also appeared on stage with the Dead, who together performed a short set of Beach Boys songs.
In 1974, Ray Stevens released what would be his biggest hit, "The Streak". The novelty tune would make it to the top of the US charts next month. and a fad was born!
In 1980, three years and a day after opening its doors, New York's legendary Studio 54 was closed for liquor license violations. Several months earlier, owners Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager were jailed for tax evasion. The club would reopened under new management in 1981.
In 1985, USA For Africa started a three-week run at #1 on the U.S. chart with “We Are The World.” The U.S. answer to Band Aid featured an all-star cast including Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Bruce Springsteen, Diana Ross, Bob Dylan, Daryl Hall, Huey Lewis, Cyndi Lauper, Kim Carnes, Ray Charles, Billy Joel and Paul Simon plus the song’s composers, Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie.
Poison released the album "Open Up and Say...Ahh!" in 1988
And in 2006 - the now famous fall out a tree incident - In Fiji, Keith Richards (Rolling Stones) was admitted to a hospital after he reportedly suffered a head injury when he fell out of a palm tree.

BAND WILL ALSO RECORD NEW 'ALBUM WITHIN AN ALBUM' IN MAY
PRNewswire -- Starting this fall (exact date TBA), EMI Music will honor the legacy of THE SMASHING PUMPKINS with an extensive campaign that will see the iconic band's albums from 1991-2000 reissued in fully remastered deluxe versions, each with bonus material.
With the full support and guidance from THE SMASHING PUMPKINS--who've created one of the most acclaimed bodies of work in musical history, selling over 30 million albums--EMI will roll out the global catalog campaign with the band's 1991 debut album GISH, 1993's SIAMESE DREAM and the 1994 compilation album PISCES ISCARIOT.
The excitement will continue into 2012 when EMI will reissue 1995's nine-times-platinum double album MELLON COLLIE AND THE INFINITE SADNESS, 1996's five-disc box set THE AEROPLANE FLIES HIGH and 1998's ADORE.
In 2013, their 2000 albums MACHINA/THE MACHINES OF GOD and MACHINA II: THE FRIENDS & ENEMIES OF MODERN MUSIC will be unified into one package. A best-of compilation will also be released in 2013. The pivotal group's many hits defined the alternative music era and continue to resonate on modern rock radio, influencing a whole new generation.
This news comes as THE SMASHING PUMPKINS have announced they will head into the studio in May to record OCEANIA--"an album within an album"--as part of their in-progress 44-song work TEARGARDEN BY KALEIDYSCOPE, nine songs of which have already been released online for free (with two elaborately packaged EPs available in stores). Meanwhile, THE SMASHING PUMPKINS will release one more song ("Owata") next week (details TBA) from TEARGARDEN BY KALEIDYSCOPE before they take a break to record OCEANIA.
BILLY CORGAN, vocalist, lead guitarist and songwriter for THE SMASHING PUMPKINS, is excited by the partnership with EMI and how this will result in the release of Pumpkins material that's in the vaults. "What makes the deal with EMI groundbreaking is the band has secured the right to all unreleased materials and will be in charge of any additional releases based on our discretion," says BILLY CORGAN, who founded the band in Chicago in 1988. "In essence, the band has the keys to the warehouse and can release whatever we want, when we want it. EMI totally supports this right, and they are our partners in it."
Colin Finkelstein, COO of EMI Music North America, said, "THE SMASHING PUMPKINS is a hugely influential and groundbreaking band, and EMI Music is pleased to partner with them for this global catalog initiative. We're excited to work with Billy Corgan to release remastered and expanded editions of the band's visionary albums, including previously unreleased recordings, and for EMI Music to exclusively distribute other gems from THE SMASHING PUMPKINS vaults, as sourced by Billy."

The Pumpkins returned in 2007 with their gold-certified and acclaimed sixth album Zeitgeist, which entered the charts at Number 2 in the U.S. and in the Top Ten internationally. Since their triumphant return to the stage in 2007, the Pumpkins have headlined some of the biggest events around the globe including the Reading Festival, Rock Am Ring, and the V fest. In 2008, the band was inducted into Hollywood's RockWalk. Their first post-major label release was the song "Superchrist," issued via the Guitar Center CD Fresh Cuts Vol. 2. They subsequently recorded the song--the modern rock hit--"G.L.O.W." for the Guitar Hero® World Tour game, marking the first time a band has recorded a new song exclusively for the franchise. In November 2008, the band released their first live DVD, If All Goes Wrong. In December 2009 The Smashing Pumpkins began releasing Teargarden By Kaleidyscope, a 44-song work with songs being released online one at a time for free (4-song physical EPs will be made available as the songs are released, such as the first one: Teargarden by Kaleidyscope Vol 1: Songs For A Sailor, issued May 25, 2010 thru Martha's Music/Rocket Science Ventures). This was followed by a second EP--Teargarden By Kaleidyscope Vol. II: "The Solstice Bare"--released November 23, 2010 via Martha's Music/Rocket Science Ventures. The group's BILLY CORGAN has said the new music "harkens back to the original psychedelic roots of The Smashing Pumpkins; atmospheric, melodic, heavy, and pretty."
Not only can Wilco fans expect a new album from the alt-rockers this fall, they can expect it to be delivered via the band’s own record label. The Chicago band’s eighth studio album, tentatively titled Get Well Soon Everybody, will be their first on dBpm, to be distributed through ANTI.
Frontman Jeff Tweedy told RollingStone.com that the album is in the mixing stages and that the band recorded more than 20 songs, “out of the things I had coming in, which was somewhere in the fifties and sixties. It’s a pretty great time for me writing-wise.”
Ozzy Osbourne Surprised People Still Ask About Bat-Biting Incident
It's been 29 years since the night Ozzy Osbourne bit the head off a bat onstage, and he's still wondering why people still ask him about it.
"One of the things that amazes me is, even now people go, 'So Ozzy, did you really bite the head off a bat?'" Osbourne said a press conference at the Tribeca Film Festival on Monday. "If you didn't know, then you must be living in a cave."
Punk icon (X-ray Spex frontwoman) Poly Styrene passes away
Marianne Elliot Said
July 3rd 1957- April 25th 2011
Poly Styrene was a punk amongst punks. A groundbreaking presence that left an unrepeatable mark on the musical landscape, she made history the moment she uttered, "Some people think little girls should be seen and not heard but I think oh bondage up yours!" The influence of Poly and X-ray Spex has been felt far and wide ever since. Their landmark album Germ Free Adolescents is a landmark work and a primary influence on Britpop and Riot Grrrl. At the centre of it was PolyStyrene, a bi-racial feminist punk with the perfect voice to soundtrack rebellion. Poly never sacrificed the intelligence or the fun in her music and style. Her trademark braces and dayglo clothes were a playful rejection of the status quo and of conformity and complacency. She dissected gender politics, consumer culture, and the obsessions of modern life in a way that made us all want sing along with her.
At the core of Poly's work from Germ Free Adolescents through Generation Indigo, is a revolutionary with a genuine love for this world and the people and things in it. Her indomitable heart is all over the new material from her championing of cruelty free products ("I Luv Ur Sneakers") to giving voice to marginalized poor people worldwide ("No Rockefeller") to tackling racism ("Colour Blind"). Poly Styrene never stopped exciting us with her incisive world-view, amazing wit, and her adventurous sound. It is impossible to imagine what modern music would be like without her incalculable contributions but it's probably not worth imagining a world that never had Poly Styrene in it.
A thrilling work from a true pioneer and rebel in every sense, Poly Styrene's album Generation Indigo is out now through Future Noise Music and was produced by Youth (The Verve, Killing Joke, The Fireman, Edwyn Collins). The album received rave reviews from Uncut, NME, The Guardian and countless others across the Atlantic. The forward looking Generation Indigo showcases Poly's humorous musings on pop culture, the internet and fashion whilst also tackling heavier subject matter (war and racism) with her politically aware and intelligent lyrics all in the inimitable voice of a genuine icon.
