E Street Band sax player Clarence Clemons dies

NEW YORK — Clarence Clemons, the larger-than-life saxophone player for the E Street Band who was one of the key influences in Bruce Springsteen's life and music through four decades, has died. He was 69.

Clemons died Saturday night after being hospitalized about a week ago following a stroke at his home in Singer Island, Fla.

Springsteen acknowledged the dire situation earlier this week, but said then he was hopeful. He called the loss "immeasurable."

"We are honored and thankful to have known him and had the opportunity to stand beside him for nearly 40 years," Springsteen said on his website. "He was my great friend, my partner and with Clarence at my side, my band and I were able to tell a story far deeper than those simply contained in our music. His life, his memory, and his love will live on in that story and in our band."

Sugarland's Bush starts record club

Sugarland's Kristian Bush is going back in time musically. He announced Wednesday he was starting the Day off Record Club in an attempt to educate his fans about his favorite music.

"It consists of me scouring through my collection of vinyl and discovering (or rediscovering) music in its complete album form," Bush said in a press release. "Scratches, record sleeve, liner notes, album cover front and back, side one, side two... all of it. I want to get lost again in music."

"This idea started on Saturdays when I would show my kids what a vinyl album was and let them pick one to put on the record player. We would listen, and they would dance or draw or color while I drank coffee. They started asking questions about the music and looking at the record covers. They got interested in what they could hold in their hand."

Who Shot Rock & Roll: Birmingham Museum of Art reveals revolution in words, images

By Michael Huebner -- The Birmingham News

Picture Elvis' on-stage writhings from 1950s photographs, and "Hound Dog" starts playing in your internal ear.

The sonic energy of Little Richard is palpable in a concert photo with his thick locks of hair and beads of sweat.

From the 1950s to the present, photographic imagery of rock 'n' roll has been able to create floods of sound and ambiance in the mind. No speakers necessary.

"The flip side of that is, when you're listening to music, you can see the image in your head," said Ron Platt, curator of modern and contemporary art at the Birmingham Museum of Art. "It really talks to the synergy between music and photography."

interesting story from new hampshire cuaght my eye:

MONADNOCK PROFILE: There’s always another tune to spin

By Abby Spegman Sentinel Staff

The first record Mitchell T. Mendys ever bought was “Let’s Get Together” by Hayley Mills with the B-side “Cobbler, Cobbler.” At this mention he breaks into song: “Cobbler, cobbler, mend my shoe/I’ve been dancing the whole night through.”

Fifty years later, Mendys still can’t get enough.

“Dig that smell,” he said, opening the door to veritable hall of records at the WKNH 91.3 station offices — shelf after shelf of aged albums. “I grew up on albums. I love the cardboard smell.”

Mendys has been on the air at WKNH, the Keene State College radio station, for nearly 20 years as host of “Planetary Prismatic Sonics” on Saturday mornings. The station is open to everyone, and in the summer is mostly run by community volunteers, longtime hosts like Mendys who are in it for the music.

Student hosts and station managers cycle in and out, but like Peter Pan in Neverland, Mendys, 63, never grows up. That makes the station offices his Lost Boys’ tree house, with its black walls splattered with neon paint and curling posters.

and in music history for today:

In 1961, Ben E. King enjoys his biggest hit as "Stand By Me" reaches #4 on the Billboard singles chart. The same song would re-appear on the Hot 100 in 1986, reaching #9, after it was featured as the title track in a film starring River Phoenix.

In 1965, the Four Tops had their first US number one record with "I Can't Help Myself". Lead singer Levi Stubbs had not been satisfied with the recording session and was promised that he could do it again the following day, but no other session ever took place. The track that became a hit was just the second take of the song.

In 1971, Carole King's double sided hit single "It's Too Late" / "I Feel The Earth Move" went to the top of the Billboard Hot 100.

In 1973, 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' opens at a London theater with Tim Curry and, in his stage debut, Meat Loaf.

In 1984, tickets for a ten-night stand by Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band at the Meadowlands in New Jersey go on sale with 202,000 seats sold in 24 hours.

In 1997, Bobby Helms, best known for his perennial Christmas hit, "Jingle Bell Rock", died of emphysema at his home in Martinsville, Indiana. He was 63.

In 1988, over 3,000 East Germans gathered at the Berlin Wall to hear Michael Jackson who was performing on the West Berlin side.

In 2006, Duane Roland, a founding member of the Southern Rock band Molly Hatchet died of natural causes at the age of 53.

birthdays today include Ann Wilson (Heart) (61), Simon Wright (AC/DC, Dio) (48) and Elaine "Spanky" McFarlane (Spanky & Our Gang) (69), just to name a few.

SOUND

Hollies Boxed Lunch From Sundazed!
by Michael Fremer
June 10, 2011

Not one Hollies hit is among the twenty songs on this ten 45rpm 7" box set and that's the best part!

Not that the hits like "Bus Stop," "Carrie Anne," "Look Through Any Window" and the others aren't great songs.

Some of the double sided singles here like "(Ain't That) Just Like Me"/ "Hey What's Wrong With Me" and "Nobody"/"Yes I Will" are genuine reissues, but most are new pairings consisting of tracks from UK EPs along with some tunes not issued when first recorded but later released on CD compilations.

The tenth single reproduces a rare Italian release written for the film "Fai in Fretta ad uccidermi...fo freddo!" ("Kill Me Quick").

As the liner notes by Domenic Priore explain, The Hollies, like label mates The Beatles, were prolific artists whose American releases failed to keep track of the group's output. American Liberty subsidiary Imperial packaged albums as it saw fit much as Capitol did with The Beatles.

For instance, this box opens with The Hollies' first single recorded April 4th 1963—a cover of The Coasters' "(Ain't That) Just Like Me" backed by "Hey What's Wrong With Me" that was never issued on vinyl in America.

The notes give you a good play-by-play of the tangled discography. Suffice it to say only the most dedicated Hollies fan will know most of the tracks but that doesn't mean casual fans shouldn't, particularly those who crave the group's resplendent harmonies.

These 45s are packed with absolutely dazzling examples of the group's harmonic splendor. When they hit the high harmonies and they wash over the ears, the effect on the listener's brain chemistry is unmistakeable.

Some tunes make clear the group's debt to The Everly Brothers, while others point strongly in the direction of their namesake. Their very different take on "She Said Yeah," better known from The Rolling Stones cover was an ear opener as was the cover of George Harrison's "If I Needed Someone." The almost solemn, anthemic "Yes I Will" (by Gerry Goffin and Russ Titelman) always pleases.

These hook-filled tunes, purposefully written to be radio singles, are mostly lightening fast and with a few exceptions come in at around two minutes each. They helped define and are a product of a rarified time in pop music history and as such listening through the set in its entirety provides a concentrated dose that's sure to leave those of a certain age filled with nostalgia and echoing Paul Simon's contention that he and his generation were "born at the right time."

All but two of these tunes were recorded at Abbey Road and so sound full and rich in a familiar Beatle-y way. The two exceptions were recorded in America at Bell Sound Studios and so compete in every way with what Abbey Road achieved.

The transfer to 45 has been expertly accomplished and the packaging is superb. Great photos, iconic '60s era artwork and look how young Graham Nash looks!

Yes, you'll be getting up and flipping sides every two minutes, but if you're like me, the harmonies will get you flipping happily as you seek the next shot of endorphin or whatever brain chemistry changes those chiming voices cause.

I happily went through the whole set twice in a row before I had my fill for the day and I was back at it the next. If you have a felt turntable mat, you're best off removing it in case you miss the touchdown, if you know what I mean.

Use it as a history lesson or just for the musical pleasure. Either way a great Sundazed reissue and easy to recommend, particularly considering the great packaging and music will set you back the very reasonable sum of $49.98

lovely story, we love our vinyl!

Vinyl record sales increase in Iowa City, nationwide

BY LUKE VOELZ

Greg Markus was bored at his friend’s cabin in Galena, Iowa. The lakeside house was dusty, cramped and almost completely devoid of electronic entertainment.

The 14-year-old’s opinion changed when he saw a weathered record player in the basement, flanked by a row of vinyl albums — also known as LPs — from the seventies. He found an album he often listened to on CD, Neil Young’s “Harvest,” and placed the needle on top. Young’s sonorous croon lit up the basement, delivered with a clarity Markus said he never heard on CD or MP3.

“I’ll never buy CDs again — stupid plastic cases, little discs,” said Markus, now 22.

U2, Bon Jovi & Elton John Top Forbes' List of Highest Paid Musicians

It's a new world in the music industry. You probably won't make a lot of money on your recordings. If you have a really good brand, you might make some money in licensing, but the real money, the big dollars, comes from touring.

That's what was proven by the twenty-five artists named to Forbes annual list of the World's Highest Paid Musicians. The vast majority of the artists on the list made their money from touring, including the top paid act, U2, who continue with their 360 Degree World Tour. The same goes for the rest of the top five who have all had big tours.

and in music history for today:

In 1955, after a month of booking gigs in larger venues in Dallas and Houston, Colonel Tom Parker arranges a meeting with Elvis Presley's manager, Bob Neal, which results in an agreement that will see the Colonel handle Presley's show dates and career strategy from now on.

In 1963, the Rolling Stones released their first UK single, "Come On", which would peak at #21.

In 1964, Jay and The Americans record the Tex-Mex hit, "Come A Little Bit Closer", which would climb to number 3 in the US by the following November.

In 1967, the Hollies' "Carrie Ann" is released in the US, where it will reach #9.

Moby Grape released 5 singles simultaneously on CBS Records in 1967.

In 1971, Carole King saw her "Tapestry" album hit number 1 in the US for the first of 15 consecutive weeks. The LP contained such classic tracks as "It's Too Late", "I Feel the Earth Move", "So Far Away", "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?" and "You've Got a Friend". The Grammy Award winning disc is considered by many to be one of the best Rock 'n' Roll albums of all time.

In 1978, Andy Gibb became the first solo artist in the history of Billboard's Hot 100 to have his first three releases reach number one when "Shadow Dancing" hit the top of the chart. Since then, Michael Jackson had four number ones in a row and Mariah Carey had five. "Shadow Dancing" would be the best selling single in the US in 1978, but was only a #42 hit in the UK.

Led Zeppelin began their last tour in 1980.

In 1987, a St. Petersburg, Florida real estate agent named Vittoria Holman sued Mötley Crüe and a concert promoter for hearing loss allegedly incurred at a concert in December 1985. Holman and her daughter had front row seats less than 10 feet (3 meters) from a wall of speakers. The case was settled out of court when the band's insurance company paid Holman over $30,000. huh?

In 1997, Ozzy Osbourne cancelled his solo set and his reunion with Black Sabbath, scheduled for an Ozzfest tour stop at the Polaris Amphitheatre near Columbus, Ohio. Osbourne claimed he had lost his voice. Other groups on the bill performed as scheduled but disappointed fans set fires and damaged the outdoor facility. Twenty-three people were arrested and three were slightly hurt. Osbourne and Black Sabbath played a make-up date two weeks later.

In 2007, the Traveling Wilburys' "Collection" rose to the top of the UK album chart. The Wilburys consisted of George Harrison, (Nelson Wilbury), Jeff Lynne, (Otis Wilbury), Roy Orbison, (Lefty Wilbury), Tom Petty, (Charlie T. Wilbury Jr.) and Bob Dylan, (Lucky Wilbury).

birthdays today include (among others) Eric Stefani (No Doubt) (44), Greg Rolie (Santana) (64), Barry Manilow (68) and Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys) (53).

Both releases available everywhere September 27, 2011 on RCA/Legacy

NEW YORK, June 15, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The explosion of Elvis Presley's career on RCA Records during the 12 months of 1956 was a wondrous evolution. By the end of that fateful year, the rockabilly singer from Memphis whose audience was rooted in the deep Southern states, would be the most famous person in the world. How did it happen? In one word: music. "…My pelvis had nothin' to do with what I do," Elvis said in 1956. "I just get kinda in rhythm with the music, I jump around to it because I enjoy what I'm doin', I'm not tryin' to be vulgar, I'm not tryin' to sell any sex, I'm not tryin' to look vulgar and nasty. I just enjoy what I'm doin' and tryin' to make the best of it ..." The rest, of course, is history. Ten million singles sold, three million EPs, and 800,000 LPs' worth, in just that first year. 1956.

YOUNG MAN WITH THE BIG BEAT puts the focus on Elvis in 1956. The package includes his RCA studio master recordings and outtakes in New York, Nashville and Memphis; live performances; interviews; and much more. Taking its name from an RCA poster campaign for his debut album, the super deluxe 5-CD, 12-inch square box set (with an amazing 80-page book with timeline) is available now for pre-order at www.elvis1956.com. Pre-order customers will also receive an exclusive replica vinyl 7" of Elvis' first 45rpm EP for RCA Records. Sharing the same striking cover art as Elvis' debut album, the EP ("extended play") features "Blue Suede Shoes," "Tutti Frutti," "I Got A Woman" and "Just Because." This vinyl single is only available through this special website offer, and it will ship upon payment for the box set.

The actual box set will be available everywhere September 27, 2011, on RCA/Legacy, a division of SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT.
The five CDs comprise the following, all material originating in 1956:

CD One, Studio Recordings: 17 tracks recorded in New York, Nashville, and Hollywood, starting with the 12 songs on the debut LP, Elvis Presley ('1254'), followed by non-LP single A-sides and B-sides, and EP tracks;

CD Two, Studio Recordings: 22 tracks recorded in New York, Nashville, and Memphis, starting with the 12 songs on the second LP, Elvis ('1382'), followed by non-LP single A-sides and B-sides, and EP tracks;

•CD Three, Live Recordings: Rare remasters of shows at the Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas (four songs); Little Rock, Arkansas (seven songs); and a recently discovered, previously unreleased concert in Shreveport, Louisiana, in December (ten songs);

CD Four, The Outtakes: Four outtakes from the first historic RCA session in January ("I Got A Woman," "Heartbreak Hotel," "I'm Counting On You," "I Was The One"), segueing into the complete session of February 3rd (11 takes of "Lawdy, Miss Clawdy" and 12 takes of "Shake, Rattle And Roll"); plus the first of the interviews -- the complete Warwick Hotel (NYC) interview by Robert Brown in March;

•CD Five, the Interviews: The Paul Wilder interview, plus his interviews with Colonel Parker and Oscar Davis; plus two segments of Elvis' rarely heard candid monologue, "The Truth About Me," and two advertisements for RCA Victrolas.

Over the course of CDs One and Two, YOUNG MAN WITH THE BIG BEAT compiles Elvis Presley's complete 1956 masters. The year was fueled by a run of hits that kept radio well-stocked: "Heartbreak Hotel," "I Was The One," "Blue Suede Shoes," "Money Honey," "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You," "My Baby Left Me," "Don't Be Cruel," "Hound Dog," and "Love Me Tender" topping the list.

In addition to the master takes, outtakes, and live performances heard on CDs One through Four of YOUNG MAN WITH THE BIG BEAT, there is also the most extensive collection of audio spoken word material ever included on an RCA release. These extended and rare interviews are previously unreleased by RCA Records. The first of these segments, at the end of CD Four, is the complete Elvis interview by Robert Brown that took place at the Warwick Hotel in New York City on March 24th.

CD Five then presents:

•The Complete TV Guide Presents Elvis interview (Elvis interviewed by Paul Wilder backstage at the Polk Theater, Lakeland, Florida, on August 10th);

•Colonel Parker and Oscar Davis (interviewed by Paul Wilder backstage at the Polk Theater, Lakeland, Florida, on August 10th);

•The Truth About Me (Original spoken word 45 rpm disc included in Teen Parade magazine. Recorded on the set of Love Me Tender, August 22nd);

•The Truth About Me Interview (Recorded on the set of Love Me Tender, August 22nd);

•RCA Victrola radio ad 1;

•RCA Victrola radio ad 2 (both ads never before released commercially).

In tandem with the release of YOUNG MAN WITH THE BIG BEAT, RCA/ Legacy will also release (on the same date) ELVIS PRESLEY: LEGACY EDITION. This special double-CD package will couple, for the first time, the Elvis Presley and Elvis albums of 1956. They will be heard as they are on CD One and CD Two of the YOUNG MAN box set (with the same bonus tracks).

ELVIS PRESLEY: LEGACY EDITION (RCA/Legacy 88697 90795 2) has as its cover image the classic Elvis Presley debut LP design that has been paid homage by the Clash (London Calling), Big Audio Dynamite (F-Punk), k.d. lang (Reintarnation), and many others. The Legacy Edition booklet will contain new liner notes and rare archival photography.

YOUNG MAN WITH THE BIG BEAT will feature one of the most extraordinary books every created at Legacy. The focal point of the book, spread across its 80 pages, will be a unique, meticulously-researched, day-by-day chronology of Elvis' iconic year, including every concert, every recording date, every television appearance, personal events in Elvis' life, and much more. A dazzling photo array of memorabilia will illustrate each day and entry. Concert ticket stubs, RCA memoranda, letters from fans, postcards from Elvis to his family, tour itineraries, magazine covers and articles, trade charts, fan club relics, RCA publicity photos, concert photos, candid photos, and more will be a feast for the eyes and the imagination as 1956 unfolds. The book was assembled by Elvis expert Roger Semon.

YOUNG MAN WITH THE BIG BEAT will also include five rare 8x10 photographs (suitable for framing), five original-size poster replicas, and a replica concert ticket stub.

YOUNG MAN WITH THE BIG BEAT was produced for reissue by Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, the respected director of RCA's Elvis catalog for over two decades. Jorgensen is also the author of the essential research guide, Elvis Presley: A Life In Music (St. Martin's Press, 1998). He recently completed The Complete Elvis Presley Masters, the 27-CD crown jewel in RCA/Legacy's Elvis 75 campaign of 2010-2011. That set contains all 711 master recordings released during Elvis' lifetime, housed in a 12-inch square presentation case which includes a coffee table-style book.

After nearly a year and a half of studio recording and singles releases on Sun Records of Memphis, Elvis Presley's recording contract was sold to RCA Records on November 21, 1955. Elvis arrived at RCA Studios in Nashville on January 10, 1956, with his band, guitarist Scotty Moore, bassist Bill Black, and D.J. Fontana on drums. It was the beginning of an odyssey that would not only transform the lives of Elvis and his buddies, but would also reshape the face of popular music, entertainment television, radio, concert promotion, movie production and more in America and around the world.

Buddy Holly: "Without Elvis none of us could have made it."

Scotty Moore: "He had so much energy we had to sit up nights to wear him out so that we could go to sleep."

John Lennon: "My crushing ambition in life was to be like Elvis Presley."

Bruce Springsteen: "My mother was watching the Ed Sullivan Show and Elvis came on. I went out and bought a guitar straight away..."

James Brown: "Elvis taught white America to get down."

From the master takes recorded at those January 10th sessions, "Heartbreak Hotel" (inducted into the Grammy® Hall Of Fame) and "I Was the One," to the Million Dollar Quartet jam session back home in Memphis on December 4th, it was a year in music that will never be equaled.

fantastic write up about a musician's love of vinyl

Indie Seen

Drive-By Truckers

by Carrie Humphries

Performing for the first time in Waterloo, Georgia based southern rock outfit Drive-By Truckers are on tour in support of their latest effort Go-Go Boots (February, 2011). On the phone with guitar/bass and vocalist, Patterson Hood, we talked about the record, DBT’s push to continue releasing vinyl and of course Shonna’s cooking (which, I’m told she’s long quit doing for the band).

At the time of our conversation, Hood was riding high on the tide of the tour. The release was met with critical rave and review and became an instant hit with fans. “It makes me very happy. I’m really glad. You never know when you make a record – you don’t know if other people are going to like it,” Hood says in his smooth southern accent. “I’ve been really happy with this response from everybody.” And in part of releasing the album, the band once again had it also pressed on vinyl. “(It’s) what I buy so when you work so hard for a record and it doesn’t come out on a format that I would buy then I feel kind of weird about it,” he explains. “Literally, it’s all I buy – vinyl. I have a turn table hooked up and I don’t own a cd player anymore except for in the car and I hardly ever use it. I love my records. I’ve been collecting records since I was eight years old which was a long time ago so I’ve got a pretty good record collection. And I would hate it if our records couldn’t be in it. I may not sit around listening to my records but I want mine to be in there. It took years to convince them to put our records out on vinyl, and then when they finally did, they sold real well. Go figure.”

The vinyl countdown

As he nears his 28th birthday, jazz musician Pokey LaFarge tells Rob Adams why a young guy like him loves recording 78s

We’ve become well used to bands promoting their new recordings from the stage, be they CDs, downloads or the vinyl that quite rightly refuses to follow its supposed chosen path into obsolescence.

But Pokey LaFarge And The South City Three can go one better than that.

The Louisville, Kentucky-born, St Louis-based LaFarge, whose celebration of early jazz, blues, western swing and bluegrass has been taking events such as Celtic Connections and Shetland and Denmark’s Tonder folk festivals by storm lately, can offer audiences a new CD, a recently released 7” single that was produced by Jack White no less, and the first of several planned 78 rpm discs for that extra taste of old-time authenticity.

A collector of 78s himself, LaFarge was elated to be offered a chance to follow his heroes such as Bessie Smith, Jimmie Rodgers and Bob Wills on to a format that’s clearly close to his heart after meeting Lewis Durham, of vintage Americana specialists, siblings Kitty, Daisy & Lewis, in London last year. When not playing gigs with his sisters, Durham is a deejay specialising in old shellac records. He set up a recording studio at home so that the trio could record the music they love in the way it was recorded originally. His label only releases 78s by musicians whose sound suits the medium.

“It’s a thrill as well as an honour,” says LaFarge of the experience of being presented with a 78 bearing his name. “Lewis records just as it was done in the 1930s. He uses studio equipment that came from the old BBC studios and we laid down two songs straight to tape, no overdubs, just the live performance. The only problem is finding enough shellac, but Lewis seems to be able to find supplies. I think he scares up old unwanted and broken 78s and melts them down.”

New Metallica Music!

Metallica posted the an update online regarding talk of a new album:

"A few months ago our own Kirk Hammett hinted at a new Metallica project that’s 'not really 100 percent a Metallica record.' While Kirk may have jumped the gun a little (and has since been properly punished with a series of push-ups!), we are more than proud to announce that we have just completed recording a full length album that is a collaboration with none other than the legendary Lou Reed.

"Ever since we had the pleasure of performing with Lou at the 25th Anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at Madison Square Garden in October of 2009, we have been kicking around the idea of making a record together. Some of you astute Bay Area residents may have picked up news of recent Lou Reed sightings in the greater San Francisco area and we have indeed been working at our home studio at HQ on and off over the last few months. In what would be lightning speed for a Metallica related project, we recorded ten songs during this time and while at this moment we’re not exactly sure when you’ll hear it, we’re beyond excited to share with you that the recording sessions wrapped up last week.

"A true innovator and easily one of the most influential songwriters, musicians, and performers in rock music history, Lou‘s work with the Velvet Underground and as a solo artist has such an enduring quality that he has long been revered and respected by us and many of our peers. We can’t wait for you to listen to the finished record, so as we like to hear ourselves say around here, keep watching this spot for updates...we’ll be back with more details as they come together."

Cassette sales and production still popular

by HOLLY YOUNG

Bands use tapes for rare tracks

Don’t pawn your parents’ dusty tape player just yet: cassettes are making a comeback.

You won’t find new cars with cassette decks anymore, and last year Sony officially stopped manufacturing Walkman cassette players. But for some people, tapes — like records — evoke a sense of nostalgia.

Collectors say there’s a personal feel one gets from holding a tangible format that one cannot get with digital, and that seems to be why cassettes are still “in.”

“CDs are just boring and pointless middlemen now,” said Steve Miller, owner of Athens-based music label Hail Shitar. “I love digital music and iPods etc, but that is for listening only. A tape or vinyl release is for owning and exploring.”

Todd Ploharski, owner of downtown music shop Low Yo Yo Stuff, said that within some genres, particularly underground and experimental, cassettes have remained popular since the ‘80s. These groups have spurred a tape resurgence, preferring the rich analogue sound over digital music.

and in music history for the day:

In 1956, a 31-year-old woman named Gogi Grant knocked Elvis out of Billboard's number one spot with a song called "The Wayward Wind". It was a tune that she recorded almost as an after thought, with just fifteen minutes of studio time remaining. Six weeks later, Elvis would be back on top with "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You".

Also in 1956, Patti Page saw what would be her biggest hit, "Allegheny Moon" enter the Billboard chart, where it would reach #2 during a 22 week run. In all, the Oklahoma native would place sixteen songs in the Top 40 between 1954 and 1965.

In 1965, Herman's Hermits were awarded their first Gold record for "Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter". The song was originally an album cut that got so much air play in the US, MGM Records released it as a single.

John Phillips of The Mamas and The Papas would later write, "San Francisco" (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair) about the festival, which became a big hit for Scott McKenzie later in the year.

Captain Beefheart released 'Trout Mask Replica' in 1969.

In 1970, Woodstock Ventures announced that they had lost more than $1.2 million on the festival. They would eventually profit from the sale of the Woodstock sound track and related memorabilia.

In 1975, John Lennon filed suit against the U.S. government saying they had selectively prosecuted him to deny his immigration.

The film Grease, with John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, premiered in 1978.

The film The Blues Brothers premiered in Chicago in 1980.

In 1982, Pretenders guitarist, 25 year old James Honeyman Scott, died in his sleep in London, England. The official cause of death is "cocaine related heart failure."

In 1993, the U.S. Postal Service released a set of seven stamps that featured Bill Haley, Buddy Holly, Clyde McPhatter, Otis Redding, Ritchie Valens, Dinah Washington and Elvis Presley.

In 1994, Kristen Pfaff (Hole) died of a heroin overdose at the age of 26.

In 1996, the two-day Tibetan Freedom Concert is held in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, CA. Over 100,000 attend. Artists included Rage Against the Machine, Smashing Pumpkins, Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, John Lee Hooker, Beck, Sonic Youth, Yoko Ono, and Richie Havens.

In 1997, the Radiohead album "OK Computer" was released.

In 2002, nearly twenty-five years after his death, Elvis Presley was number one again in the UK. A remix of his "A Little Less Conversation" by Dutch disc jockey JXL claimed the top spot on the British singles charts, bringing the King's total of chart-topping hits to eighteen, one more than the Beatles' current tally.

Experience Hendrix LLC & Legacy Recordings Launches Fourth Wave of Releases in Critically Acclaimed Jimi Hendrix Catalog Project

Quartet of Releases Includes 4-Disc Winterland Box Set; Hendrix In The West Expanded; Blue Wild Angel: Jimi Hendrix Live At The Isle Of Wight Uncut on DVD & Every Hendrix Appearance/Performance on The Dick Cavett Show

Available Everywhere Tuesday, September 13

NEW YORK, June 16, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Experience Hendrix LLC and Legacy Recordings proudly announce four new titles representing the fourth wave of releases in the monumental Jimi Hendrix Catalog Project, available everywhere Tuesday, September 13.

The fourth round of titles from the artist Rolling Stone magazine called "the greatest guitarist of all time" focuses on Hendrix the concert performer with four outstanding releases underscoring the artist's electrifying on-stage prowess: Winterland (a 4 Disc Deluxe Box Set), Hendrix In The West (Expanded), Blue Wild Angel: Jimi Hendrix Live At The Isle Of Wight (uncut on DVD), and Jimi Hendrix: The Dick Cavett Show (every Hendrix appearance on the celebrated talk show on DVD).

Jimi Hendrix Experience- Winterland (versions available: 4 Disc Deluxe Box Set or 8 12" 180 gram Vinyl Audiophile LP Deluxe Box Set or 1 CD Winterland "Highlights")

Winterland is drawn from six stellar shows recorded over three days (October 10, 11 and 12, 1968) at San Francisco's historic Winterland Ballroom. These special performances celebrated the two year anniversary of the Jimi Hendrix Experience and came just as the groundbreaking album Electric Ladyland was released.

Winterland presents some of Hendrix's most spectacular guitar work and the four CD set (also available as eight 12" vinyl LPs) is filled with rare live versions of classic songs such as "Manic Depression," "Are You Experienced?," "Tax Free," and "Little Wing" that are not part of any other Sony Legacy release. Fans will also enjoy Hendrix's dramatic interpretations of Cream's "Sunshine Of Your Love" and Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor" [with the Experience joined by Jefferson Airplane bassist Jack Casady] as well his rendition of Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone," which has been selected as the lead track for this special release.

This special deluxe box set features never before released music from each of the six unforgettable Winterland performances. The new standard and deluxe editions of Winterland are markedly different from a single disc compilation, long out of print, that was briefly issued by Rykodisc in 1987 and 1988.

The deluxe edition also presents a rare interview with Hendrix recorded backstage at the Boston Garden a few weeks after the Winterland performances. This previously unreleased bonus provides fans with a unique window into Hendrix's views about his background, his approach to the guitar and songwriting and future direction of his music.

The deluxe edition also features a 36 page booked filled with previously unpublished images by acclaimed photographers Robert Knight, Allen Tannenbaum and Jim Marshall as well as an essay by noted Rolling Stone journalist David Fricke.

The featured track, "Like A Rolling Stone," will precede the album's release as a CD and 7" vinyl single coming out Tuesday, August 23 in the states (international release date: August 22). The single will also feature a previously unreleased live version of "Purple Haze" from the Winterland concerts that will not be featured on the box set.

Amazon will offer an exclusive bonus CD, to be bundled with all orders of the four CD and 8 LP Winterland box sets sold through Amazon during 2011, consisting of recordings from Jimi's February 4, 1968 Winterland performance: "Killing Floor," "Red House," "Dear Mr. Fantasy (Part One)" and "Dear Mr. Fantasy (Part Two)." These tracks have been previously available only as part of the rare Dagger Records official bootleg Paris '67/San Francisco '68 and have never been available for retail sale.

Jimi Hendrix - Blue Wild Angel: Jimi Hendrix At The Isle Of Wight - DVD

Experience Hendrix has also expanded this definitive presentation of Jimi's historic performance before 600,000 at the Isle of Wight Festival in August 1970.

Exquisitely directed by Academy Award-winning American documentary/experimental filmmaker Murray Lerner, this special reissue now runs more than 180 minutes and features a newly created special features section that allows viewers to view individual camera angles of selected performances. Hendrix fans can now select individual camera angles to focus on the guitarist's incomparable fretwork and technique during such signature songs as "All Along The Watchtower," "Spanish Castle Magic," "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," "Foxey Lady," and more.

This new definitive DVD edition also features newly discovered footage of Hendrix's Isle Of Wight performance of "Hey Joe," the single that launched his meteoric career in England in 1966.

Blue Wild Angel: Jimi Hendrix Live At The Isle Of Wight features both stereo and 5.1 surround soundtracks mixed by Eddie Kramer, Hendrix's original recording engineer.

Jimi Hendrix: The Dick Cavett Show - DVD

The complete collection of Jimi Hendrix's celebrated appearances on The Dick Cavett Show is now available on Legacy Recordings. The Dick Cavett Show marked Jimi's US network television debut and this special documentary, directed by multiple Grammy Award winner Bob Smeaton [Beatles Anthology, Band Of Gypsys], features complete live performances of "Izabella", "Machine Gun", and "Hear My Train A Comin'" as well as new interviews with Cavett, Experience band members Mitch Mitchell and Billy Cox, and others. Jimi's own insightful interviews with Cavett touched upon a variety of personal and professional issues ranging from his stint as a US Army paratrooper to his celebrated rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner" at the Woodstock Festival. These conversations with Cavett helped reveal the humor, passion, and intelligence of the man behind such rock classics as Are You Experienced and Electric Ladyland.

This deluxe edition also includes a new, behind the scenes documentary. The Dick Cavett Show DVD runs 90 minutes total.

This year's edition of the Experience Hendrix concert tour, presented by Fender Musical Instruments, recently completed a limited run of select dates in May with an all-star lineup of musical greats paying homage to the abiding genius of Jimi Hendrix. This year's tour included performances by Billy Cox, Steve Vai, Robert Randolph, Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, David Hidalgo & Cesar Rosas [Los Lobos], Keb' Mo', Eric Johnson, North Mississippi All Stars, Brad Whitford [Aerosmith], Living Colour, Ernie Isley, Chris Layton [Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble], Mato [Indigenous] with other special guests. The Orange County Register, in its review of Experience Hendrix at the 2011 Doheny Blues Festival, called it "...overwhelmingly strong, even inspired, an Electric Church encounter that one likes to think would have made Jimi proud."

Massively popular with fans and critics alike, the 2010 Experience Hendrix tour inspired

Larry Rodgers of the Arizona Republic to rave, "It was encouraging to see fans of all ages, from teens to baby boomers who witnessed Hendrix's career launch firsthand, in the Mesa crowd. The show and that crowd made it clear that Hendrix's magical music will never die."

Dan Durchholz, covering the tour for the St. Louis Post Dispatch marveled at how "...the Experience Hendrix tour showed just how pervasive (Hendrix's) influence continues to be. The three-hour show featured an all-star lineup from a variety of musical traditions, united by a collective debt to the iconic artist's songs, showmanship and trailblazing technique. Despite its creator's demise decades ago, Hendrix's music is still alive and well."

Experience Hendrix bassist Billy Cox -- who first befriended Hendrix in the 101st Airborne Division of U.S. Army, played in both the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Band of Gypsys and performed with Hendrix at such landmark festivals as Woodstock and the Isle of Wight -- is delighted to play a part in the current tour saying, "It's a thrill for me to play Jimi's music for audiences now as it was in the 1960s."

Legacy's first round of Jimi Hendrix releases opened with the release of Valleys of Neptune, a long-awaited album of previously unavailable Jimi Hendrix studio recordings, which debuted on the Billboard 200 best-selling albums chart at #4 while four additional Hendrix catalog titles -- Are You Experienced (#44), Electric Ladyland (#60), First Rays of the New Rising Sun (#63), and Axis: Bold As Love (#67) -- rocketed back into the Billboard 200 four decades after their original release dates. A testimony to the enduring vitality and importance of the trailblazing artist-guitarist-performer, Jimi Hendrix had five albums in America's Top 100 in March 2010.

The second wave of 2010 Jimi Hendrix titles culminated in the long awaited release of West Coast Seattle Boy: The Jimi Hendrix Anthology, a definitive career-spanning four CD box set tracking Hendrix's remarkable journey from R&B sideman to international stardom. The deluxe set is filled with previously unreleased Jimi Hendrix Experience recordings plus demos, alternate takes and more. The newly curated and assembled Jimi Hendrix anthology includes a new Hendrix documentary directed by the Grammy award winning Bob Smeaton (Beatles Anthology, Festival Express, Beatles: The Studio Recordings).

The third wave of Legacy Hendrix reissues, released in April 2011, offered the definitive edition of the career-spanning posthumous album South Saturn Delta; a deluxe DVD edition of Jimi Hendrix: Band of Gypsys (Live at Fillmore East), winner of the 1999 Best Long Form Music Video Grammy; and "Fire" coupled with "Touch You" a limited edition single available on 7" vinyl and CD (with a third unreleased track "Cat Talking To Me"), struck in celebration of nationwide Record Store Day on Saturday, April 16.

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osbrone

FOR THE WEEK OF JUNE 13, 2011

DEAR JERRY: While watching Have Gun - Will Travel, the popular TV western in the 1950s and '60s, I noticed the theme, “The Ballad of Paladin,” is sung by someone named Johnny Western.

He has such a nice voice, and I am wondering if he made any records, or sang themes for other television shows.

I also think Richard Boone was the perfect choice for the part of Paladin.
—Janice Bolin, Boonville, Ind.

DEAR JANICE: It stands to reason Richard Boone would be well-received in Boonville.

In 1954, 20-year-old Johnny Western heeded Horace Greely's advice to “Go west young man!” He left his Minnesota home bound for Hollywood, chasing his Gene Autry-inspired dream of being a singing cowboy in the movies.

Just months later, Johnny owned his own company, Film-West Productions. On January 1, 1955, Film-West announced plans to shoot a half-hour western in color, starring, and titled, Johnny Western.

Unfortunately, those plans got derailed, otherwise they would have made television's first color western, four years before Bonanza (1959). Western finally got to act, on Have Gun - Will Travel. In the 35th episode, “The Return of Dr. Thackeray,” he played Steve Pauley, a short-tempered cowpoke foolish enough to challenge Paladin to a gunfight. Not a wise move, though he somehow survived and appeared uncredited in six future episodes (1962-'63).

It was a busy time for Johnny, who snagged TV roles on: Boots and Saddles (1957); Gunsmoke (1958); Flight (1958); Tales of Wells Fargo (1958-'59); Pony Express (1960); and The Night Rider (1962). He even got big screen parts in The Dalton Girls (1957), and Fort Bowie (1958). Western wrote “The Ballad of Paladin,” and is heard singing what amounts to about one verse over the closing credits of all 226 episodes.

Have Gun - Will Travel, the prototype intellectual western, ran on CBS for six years (September 14, 1957 - September 21, 1963). Most impressive is that a Saturday night show dominated the ratings for all but its last two years, averaging over 33% of the available audience and consistently among television's Top 3.

Based on “The Ballad of Paladin,” plus his singing cowboy persona, CBS's music arm, Columbia Records, signed Johnny to a five-year (1958-1963) deal for seven singles and one LP.

His first and most successful is the original single of “The Ballad of Paladin” (Columbia 41260). Its September 1958 release coincided perfectly with the second season kickoff of Have Gun - Will Travel.

The Paladin tie-in continues on the B-side, “The Guns of Rio Muerto.” Here the narrative is by Richard Boone with Western handling the singing parts.

Three years later, with Have Gun - Will Travel the third most-watched program — the top two also being westerns: Bonanza and Wagon Train — Johnny recorded a new version of “The Ballad of Paladin” (Columbia 42161). Accompanying John on this session was Columbia's No. 1 western music star, Marty Robbins.

Strangely, Columbia waited until 1962, when viewership of Have Gun - Will Travel was dwindling (Nielsen rated No. 29), to issue Western's first album, “Have Gun, Will Travel” (CL-1788/CS-8588).

Predictably, it did not sell nearly as well as it would if released circa 1958.

For decades, Johnny Western traveled and performed with the Johnny Cash Show, including some of those legendary penitentiary gigs. Western also served as the Cash show's emcee.

His complete body of work includes recordings before and after his years with Columbia. Among those other labels are: JOCO (1952); Philips (1964); and Hep (1967).

All of John's recorded output is available on the three-CD boxed set: “Heroes and Cowboys” (Bear Family BCD-15552). For around $70, this collection provides 74 Johnny Western tracks.

His only tune used as a TV series theme is “The Ballad of Paladin,” which earned him a permanent spot in the TV Theme Hall of Fame. Johnny Western still tours and performs, and is regularly heard on the radio.

IZ ZAT SO? Besides the TV Theme Hall of Fame (1993), John is also enshrined in the Country Music Disc Jockey Hall of Fame (2000); Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame (2000); Western Music Association Hall of Fame (2001); Wichita Professional Broadcasters Hall of Fame (2002); Kansas Cowboy Hall of Fame (2004); and Kansas Western Swing Hall of Fame (2004).

PESTILENCE: Legendary Progressive Tech Metallers To Release New Full-Length

Legendary progressive tech metallers, PESTILENCE, will release their sixth full-length to North American masses on July 19, 2011 via Mascot Records. Titled Doctrine, the 11-track long player finds the Dutch metal collective at their most extreme, offering up a torrent of thought-provoking lyrics, dissonant chords, complex rhythm patterns and low-tuned, monster riffs. While not a “concept album” in the traditional sense, the record is largely based around the various ways humanity often suffers under the burden of religion and politics. “I always put a lot of effort in the lyrics,” comments vocalist/guitarist Patrick Mameli. “I never felt the need to write ‘gore’ lyrics, like so many other bands do. I am aware of what is going on in the world and I have the feeling that I have something to say about it.”

NRBQ Returns With New Lineup and Album

Terry Adams has reclaimed the NRBQ name for the new album Keep This Love Goin’, which is scheduled for release on July 19. In addition to Adams, the 12-track album will feature Scott Ligon, Terry Adams, Pete Donnelly, and Conrad Choucroun. The eclectic disc will include everything from material inspired by zyedco musician Wilson “Boozoo” Chavis to an adaptation of Tchaikovsky’s “Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat Minor” redone as a country song.

Former NRBQ member Tom Ardolino created the cover art for the album and also plays drums on two of the tracks. When asked about the new NRBQ members Adams commented:

more about young's newest release, the la times does a great job covering the details:

Neil Young releases what Geffen Records didn't consider 'A Treasure'

The collection of live performances from around 1984 and 1985 of Neil Young with the International Harvesters showcases the sound that led the label to sue him.

By Randy Lewis, Los Angeles Times

The recent news that country singer Tim McGraw's record company is suing him over his latest album is just the latest of many stranger-than-fiction examples of artist-label relations going south.

In 1993, the head of John Fogerty's record label sued him for sounding too much like … John Fogerty, arguing that his single "The Old Man Down the Road" was merely a remake of Fogerty's old Creedence Clearwater Revival hit "Run Through the Jungle." (Fogerty won.)

That had followed an equally surreal case from 1984, when Neil Young was sued by his label at the time, Geffen Records, for not sounding enough like himself.

That's the backdrop for the release of a collection out of the Canadian rocker's archive, "A Treasure," a batch of live performances circa 1984-85 when he'd assembled a country-rock band that toured as the International Harvesters.

and in music history for today:

In 1963, 21 year old Kyu Sakamoto became the first Japanese artist to hit the top of the US singles chart with a song called "Sukiyaki". The original title of the song was "Ue O Muite Aruko", which translates "I Look Up When I Walk". Sakamoto was killed on August 12th, 1985 when JAL Flight 123, a Boeing 747, crashed and burned on a thickly wooded mountain about 60 miles northwest of Tokyo. He was 43.

Jan and Dean's "Surf City" was released in 1963. The song featured Brian Wilson on backing vocals and would prove to be the duo's only US number 1 record.

In 1966, the Beatles L.P., "Yesterday and Today" is released by Capitol with the controversial "butcher" cover, with the Beatles smiling amongst a group of decapitated baby dolls. The original photo became a huge publicity problem for Capitol and was quickly replaced by a more conventional cover.

In 1967, five teenagers from Mansfield, Ohio, called The Music Explosion found themselves with a monster hit on their hands when "Little Bit O' Soul" peaked at #2 on the Hot 100. The group would be awarded a Gold Record for their efforts, but although they would release more material, none of their follow-ups reached any higher than #63. Drummer Bob Avery would later go on to the band Crazy Elephant, who reached #12 on both sides of the Atlantic with "Gimme Gimme Good Lovin'".

Dire Straits started a nine-week run at #1 on the US album in 1985 chart with, 'Brothers in Arms.'

In 1989, Nirvana's debut album Bleach was released in the US.

In 1993, Ray Charles made music history when his album "My World" showed up on Billboard's Hot 200, marking the sixth decade he had a charted LP. amazing.....

In 1996, jazz legend Ella Fitzgerald died in Beverly Hills, California, aged 79. Already blinded by the effects of diabetes, Fitzgerald had both her legs amputated in 1993. Winner of 13 Grammy Awards, the 1956 Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Songboo was the first of eight Songbook sets. Appeared in the TV commercial for Memorex, where she sang a note that shattered a glass while being recorded on a Memorex cassette tape. The tape was played back and the recording also broke the glass, asking "Is it live, or is it Memorex?"

In 2002, a rare autographed copy of The Beatles’ album Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band sold at auction for £34,000 ($57,800), more than five times the estimated price.

In 2005, Coldplay went straight to #1 on the U.S. album chart with their third album X&Y having already entered at #1 in the U.K. The last time a British artist had a simultaneous U.S. and U.K. #1 was in November 2000 with 1, a compilation of hits by The Beatles. The last studio album to reach number one on both sides of the Atlantic was Radiohead's Kid A in October 2000. X&Y went on to top over 30 global charts.
