and in music history for the day:

In 1955, a landmark in music history was established on July 9th, when Bill Haley's "Rock Around The Clock" reaches number one on the Billboard chart. Many music historians will eventually acknowledge the song as a dividing line, separating Rock and Roll from everything that preceded it.

In 1955, Pat Boone releases his cover version of Fats Domino's "Ain't That A Shame". Domino's recording reached number ten in the US while Boone's version went all the way to number one.

Also in 1955, Les Paul and Mary Ford enter the Billboard charts with "Hummingbird", which will reach #7 and become the first of their five Pop chart entries.

In 1956, Dick Clark made his debut as host of Bandstand on Philadelphia TV station WFIL. He took over from Bob Horn, who had been charged with driving while intoxicated during a highly-publicized police crackdown. The show's name would be changed to American Bandstand when it went to ABC-TV in 1957. Clark relinquished his hosting duties in 1989 to 26 year-old David Hirsch, but the program died within a matter of months. Still, it had been on the air for 37 years - a record for a television variety show.

In 1956, after the June 30th trouble at Asbury Park, Bill Haley and His Comets are denied permission to play at the Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City. A city ordnance was passed that read: "Rock and roll music encouraged juvenile delinquency and inspired young females in lewd bathing suits to perform obscene dances on the city's beaches."

In 1957, Bobby Helms records "My Special Angel", which will become his first US Top 40 hit when it reaches #7 later in the year.

Johnny Cash signed with Columbia Records in 1958, where he will remain for the next 30 years.

"Blowin' in the Wind" was recodred by Bob Dylan in 1962.

In 1971, Jim Morrison was buried in Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.

In 1972, Paul McCartney and Wings played their very first show in the small French town of Chateauvillon. The band included Denny Laine, Denny Seiwell, Henry McCullough and Paul's wife, Linda. It was McCartney's first time on the road since the Beatles quit touring in 1966.

In 1977, "Undercover Angel" by Alan O'Day reached the top spot on the Billboard Pop chart. It was his only solo hit, but it was not the first visit to the top of the Pop music world. He wrote "Angie Baby", a #1 hit for Helen Reddy and the #3 hit, "Rock And Roll Heaven" for The Righteous Brothers. "Undercover Angel" stalled at #43 in the UK.

In 1983, the Police started an eight week run at #1 on the US singles chart with "Every Breath You Take", also a chart topper in the UK.

In 1995, the Grateful Dead gave their last concert with Jerry Garcia at Chicago's Soldier Field. Garcia died the next month of a heart attack.

In 1998, Janet Jackson set a gross revenue record of $875,000 at the MCI Center in Washington, DC. The previous record was set my Yanni on January 31, 1998, with $860,300.

In 2006, Milan B. Williams, one of the founding members of The Commodores, died at the age of 58 after a long battle with cancer. He wrote the band's first hit, "Machine Gun".

The great Bon Scott (AC/DC) was born today in 1946 (he died in 1980).

birthdays today include: Jack White (36), Jim Kerr (Simple Minds) (52), Courtney Love (47) and Frank Bello (Anthrax) (23), to name a few.

Baldwin-Wallace College students plan to set the record straight in vinyl's popularity

By Joanne Berger DuMound, Sun News

BEREA -- Baldwin-Wallace College students Owen M. McCafferty II and Ben Meadors are old school when listening to music.

They were raised on “black wax” — record albums.

“Vinyl records have been part of my and Ben’s life since we were kids. My mother and father listened to them. When I was at my grandmother’s house, she would listen to them. We both grew up with a passion for them,” said McCafferty, a North Olmsted High grad. “Now, as we’ve grown older, we’ve noticed vinyl is becoming more popular with those our age.”

That vinyl resurrection begs the question — why.

Meadors and McCafferty plan to ask young record collectors, store owners and vinyl-lovers in Cleveland, New York City, Chicago, Portland and San Francisco that question. Their travels will lead to “The New Face of Vinyl: Youth’s Digital Devolution” project. It will be a 180-plus page, full color photo-documentary-book that explores the vinyl comeback as they share their experiences along the way

and in music history for today:

In 1957, "Teddy Bear" became Elvis Presley's eighth US number one hit in the past fifteen months.

In 1958, the first Gold record album presented by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) was awarded to the soundtrack LP, "Oklahoma". The honor signified that the album had reached one million dollars in sales. The first Gold single issued by the RIAA was "Catch a Falling Star" by Perry Como in March of 1958. A Gold single represented sales of one million records.

Also in 1958, Hank Ballard recorded a self-penned tune called "The Twist" at Vee-Jay Records' studios in Gary, Indiana. A re-recorded version released by King Records would make a modest splash on the R&B charts in 1959, but it would take Chubby Checker to make a giant hit out of it in 1960.

In 1963, Freddie And The Dreamers record "I'm Telling You Now", which would climb to number 2 in England. When it was released in the US the following year, during the height of the British Invasion, it made the Top Ten.

In 1965, the Dave Clark Five followed the Beatles onto the silver screen with a movie of their own called Catch Us If You Can. The film was renamed to Having a Wild Weekend for its US release and featured the group performing "Catch Us If You Can", "Having a Wild Weekend" and "I Can't Stand It".

In 1968, Pink Floyd opened their North American tour in Chicago.

In 1971, a small riot occurred at the Mott the Hoople show at London's Royal Albert Hall, causing a short ban on rock shows at the venue.

In 1978, after a six month stay, the soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever is finally knocked out of the top spot on the Billboard album chart by Gerry Rafferty's "City To City", which contained the single "Baker Street".

Exile's "Kiss You All Over" was released in 1978.

In 1979, after signing with Island Records, the B-52s make their live debut at London's Lyceum Ballroom.

Nude photos of Madonna, taken early in her career, are published by Playboy and Penthouse in 1985.

In 1998 - Nancy Sinatra announced that her father, Frank Sinatra's archive would be donated to the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institute.

In 2003, one of Elvis Presley's teeth went up for auction on eBay. The tooth was owned by the King's former fiancée, Linda Thompson, until it went to the Elvis Presley Museum which later sold the tooth. The current owner said he'd been contacted by a European company that wanted to extract DNA from the tooth, but he refused. The opening bid on the tooth, a lock of hair from his Army induction haircut and a Gold record for "Love Me Tender" was $100,000.

birthdays today include Chuck Negron (Three Dog Night) (69), Jaimoe "Johnny" Johanson (Allman Brothers Band) (67), Carlos Cavazo (Quiet Riot) (54), Toby Keith (50), Joan Osborne (49), Beck (41) and Jamie Cook (Arctic Monkeys) (26), to name a few....

this is why we hunt, what a find!

Vintage record found in flea market

Gary Doucet happens upon WWII item

By Brian Trahan/Southwest Daily News

Sulphur, La. — Imagine if you're storming Utah or Omaha beach during the Normandy Invasion in 1944, you reach the cities of Bayeux or St. Vigor le Grand and you have no way of communicating with the locals.

In World War II, the U.S. Army wasn't quite concerned about communication skills, with understanding. However, there was an attempt in 1943 to teach American soldiers enough foreign language for basic interraction. Former Sulphur resident Gary Doucet found this out, while combing through a flea market in Winnie, Texas.

Doucet, who is an avid collector of vintage vinyl records, stumbled upon a World War II Audio teaching aid in near mint condition, which he considers to be one of his prized possessions.

"I've been collecting records for several years and enjoy coming across vintage items," he said. "But this one, was really unusual. I basically came upon an old beat up box at this flea market in Texas. Inside this tattered box was a few old 78s in their original sleeve.

"When I reached the last record, the memo sheet was underneath," he continued. "It was miraculous that the record and the memo survived over 60 years."

The Raconteurs Plan First Gig in Two Years

Music workaholic Jack White back at it

The Raconteurs will play their first live show in two years, and their only planned concert of the year, as headliners of the inaugural MI Fest, which takes place Sept. 17 at the Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan. The performance will break a hiatus for the band, which features Jack White, Brendan Benson and the Greenhornes rhythm section of bassist Jack Lawrence (who also plays with White in the Dead Weather) and drummer Patrick Keeler.

The individual group members have been working on other side projects since the summer of 2008. The Raconteurs have released two studio albums, the most recent being 2008’s Consolers of the Lonely. There’s no word yet on if the guys are working on a follow-up.

The Raconteurs will be joined at the MI Fest by co-headliner Sheryl Crow, while a variety of Michigan-based artists will fill out the two-stage bill, including Mitch Ryder, former Grand Funk Railroad frontman Mark Farner, the Romantics, the Rockets, Alto Reed from Bob Seger's Silver Bullet Band and Kid Rock protege Ty Stone & the Truth. The festival will also include an art show featuring works by legendary rock poster artists such as Gary Grimshaw, Stanley Mouse and Mark Arminski.

freaking fantastic vinyl story, a must read for vinyl lovers!

'The Vinylist,' Gene Webb, puts his passion for records on the line in Central Square store

By Mark Bialczak/The Post-Standard

It’s a lazy Friday afternoon in June inside the Disc-Connection in Central Square.

Owner Gene Webb grabs his phone on the first ring.

It’s Rich Valentine, of Morris (near Oneonta), ready to talk about his monthly order.

“Sometimes I spend $80. Sometimes $60. Or $20,” Valentine says when Webb hands his phone to the reporter.

Why has Valentine been doing business with Webb for 20 years?

“He has a whole lot of stuff that’s interesting and hard to find,” Valentine says. “If you can get it, he’ll get it.”

In fact, Webb’s knack for securing the product Valentine wants has earned the proprietor a nickname.

“I call him Gene, Gene, the Vinyl Machine,” Valentine says.

Webb digs it. He calls himself The Vinylist on eBay.

“I still believe in the vinyl,” he says. “I never thought it would go away. And it hasn’t. We’re getting a new generation listening to it. That’s a good thing.”

lovely story from 'down under,' they love their vinyl!

Vinyl revival

BY KATHRYN KERNOHAN

While CD sales slump, Melburnians can’t get enough of those black plastic discs.
Everybody has a vice. Some people spend hours playing video games. Others watch four games of football every weekend, or blow their pay on shoes or books. Judging by the queues stretching down Bourke Street Mall, a fair few Melburnians already have Spanish fashion giant Zara as theirs.

My vice is vinyl. I can’t get enough of those beautiful discs of black plastic. Earlier this year I visited the United States and had to smuggle my newly acquired records home in my carry-on luggage to avoid excess baggage charges.

Many will remain in their shrink wrapping, unopened and in mint condition until the end of time. Others, bought second-hand, come lovingly scuffed. I love flipping the sleeves over, wondering where they lived before they ended up in my possession.

I’m not alone in my expensive habit............

Evile Reveals "Five Serpent's Teeth" Artwork

Evile will be releasing their new album 'Five Serpent's Teeth' on September 26th, 2011. Here is the album's artwork. Evile's Matt Drake commented on the new album cover:

"So here it is, the artwork for Five Serpent's Teeth. As is always the case with Evile, we try and do things a bit differently from what we've done before, so we fancied something a bit more design-orientated this time around. It's been done by a great artist by the name of Gustavo Sazes and he really came through for us as we were struggling to find something that visually accompanied the music, so hats off to the man! Make what you will of any meaning you think the cover may hold, much the same as you will be able to do with the lyrical content of the album; we know what it means to us, so enjoy!"

and in music history for today:

In 1954, Memphis DJ Dewey Phillips became the first person to air an Elvis Presley record ("That's Alright Mama").

Also in 1954, two versions of "Sh-Boom" hit the US Top 10. The original version by a Black group called the Chords was at #9 and the cover version by a White group called The Crew Cuts was at #5.

In 1956, the Platters' "My Prayer" was released.

In 1958, Ricky Nelson's "Poor Little Fool" entered the US charts, where it will eventually reach number one.

"Only the Lonely" by the immortal Roy Orbison (single) was released in 1960.

The Rolling Stones made their debut on British TV in 1963 on Thank Your Lucky Stars.

In 1965, Sonny and Cher perform their new single "I Got You Babe" on US TV's Rock and Roll show, Shindig.

In 1967, the Monkees kicked off a U.S. tour. Their opening act was Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix was dropped after eight shows, being told that his music was not suitable for a young audience.

In 1968, the Yardbirds played their final show in Luton, U.K. Guitarist Jimmy Page was determined to keep the act going, renaming a new line-up The New Yardbirds. Keith Moon of The Who is rumored to have said "...it'll probably go over like a lead zeppelin", thus inspiring the final name change.

In 1969, George Harrison recorded his new song, “Here Comes the Sun,” with just two other Beatles, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, at Abbey Road Studios in London. John Lennon was absent, recovering from a car crash in Scotland.

Paul McCartney's "Live and Let Die" was released in 1973.

In 1980, Led Zeppelin played their last-ever concert when they appeared in West Berlin at the end of a European tour. The set included “Black Dog,” “Rock and Roll,” “Kashmir,” “Trampled Underfoot” and “Stairway to Heaven.” They finished the show with “Whole Lotta Love.”

In 1984, Bruce Springsteen went to #1 on the U.S. album chart with Born in the U.S.A. The album went on to spend a total of 139 weeks on the U.S. chart. It is also one of three albums (Michael Jackson’s Thriller and Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814) to produce seven Top 10 U.S. singles.

Sadly in 1989 - CD sales exceeded vinyl for the first time. The dominance of CDs virtually wiped out the 45 RPM single format, as nothing ended up replacing them. The 3½ inch CD single would die out after record companies refused to offer them at a reasonable price. and yet, vinyl is coming back!!

In 2006, Syd Barrett died from complications arising from diabetes. He was 60. The singer, songwriter and guitarist was one of the founding members of Pink Floyd, active as a rock musician for only about seven years before he went into seclusion. He joined Pink Floyd in 1965 but left three years later after one album. Barrett released two solo albums before going into a self-imposed seclusion lasting more than 30 years, with his mental deterioration blamed on drugs.

In 2009, Michael Jackson's family and fans said farewell to the pop superstar at an emotional memorial service. The singer’s coffin was placed in front of the stage during the event at the Staples Center in Los Angeles after an earlier private funeral. Jackson’s daughter Paris, 11, fought back tears to describe him as, “the best father you could ever imagine.” Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie and Mariah Carey paid tribute before the family joined a somber finale on stage. Motown boss Berry Gordy, who signed the Jackson Five, ended his tribute with the words: “Michael, thank you for the joy, thank you for the love. You will live in my heart forever.”

And in 2010, Paul McCartney joined Ringo Starr onstage at a concert at New York's Radio City Music Hall to help celebrate the former Beatle drummer's 70th birthday. With Ringo's All Starr Band joined by Yoko Ono, Joe Walsh, Angus Young and Steven Van Zandt, Paul belted out "Birthday" and Ringo delivered "With A Little Help From My Friends".

birthdays today include: Ringo Starr (71), James Rodford (Argent) (70), Vonda Shepard (48) and Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt (Iron Butterfly) (63), just to name a few

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 4, 2011

DEAR JERRY: Here I am right in the middle of a recording session, but I just told the band to take a short break so I can tell you everything I recall about the recordings I made in 1964 with the You Know Who Group.

Considering you couldn't reach me back in May, when you first wrote about “Roses Are Red My Love,” you did a good job piecing things together. Having moved to Canada many years ago can make finding me a bit more difficult.

The You Know Who Group, as you indicated, were not British at all. Chances are none of them ever set foot in England.

However, they were not a happenstance gathering of studio musicians. They were a real self-contained garage band and they played all their own instruments.

From their home base in Brooklyn, they came to my Manhattan studio, Talent Masters, wanting to record two original songs: “Roses Are Red My Love” and “Playboy.” Both were written by Robert Esposito, their leader and also their lead singer.

Other than Esposito, I don't recall the names of any of the other “Boys with That Great New English Sound.”

Now, nearly 50 years after their LP came out, it can also be told that the four guys on the front cover, wearing capes and masks, are indeed the same band that's singing and playing on the record! Pictured third from the left is Robert Esposito.

As for my musical contribution, I think I played some guitar, and possibly piano, which I overdubbed after the session. Contrary to frequently published reports, this was not a studio band. Other than myself, no outside musicians were involved.

These boys probably had a group name when they arrived at Talent Masters, but I doubt I ever knew it. My partner, Bob Harvey, came up with the idea of having them try to sound British. He also named them the You Know Who Group, and dreamed up the whole secret identity stunt, complete with masks and capes.

Esposito and the guys were not very happy about Bob's brainstorm, but they went along with it on the chance it would create more publicity if people thought they might be the Beatles, for example, singing under another name. Like the 4 Seasons did as the Wonder Who?

It turned out Harvey was right. If not for the gimmick angle, they probably would never have gotten to put out an album after just one moderately successful single.

Break time is over now. Gotta get back to making music.
—Bob Gallo, Toronto, Ontario

DEAR BOB: Unless we hear from Robert Esposito, or another of the You Know Who Group, it is very unlikely we'll ever learn the names behind the other three masks — but what a huge help you have been!

Count me among those who pegged the You Know Who Group as a makeshift, middle-aged group of studio musicians, and not the four young men pictured on the LP cover.

As far-fetched as it seems, some publications go so far as to suggest “Roses Are Red My Love” is really by the 4 Seasons. Clearly, the Jersey Boys have nothing to do with any of this.

The You Know Who Group is neither the first nor the last act to come across as mysterious by being masked.

Best known is Orion (Jimmy Ellis), who had about a dozen Country hits in the early '80s. But let's look at an earlier masked man, one not nearly as familiar:

In 1958, at Gold Coast Studio in Mobile, Ala., Jerry Lott recorded two original songs, “Love Me,” a frantic rocker, and “Whisper Your Love,” a rock-a-ballad. For over a year, those masters existed only on tape.

Then, in late 1959 when pure rock and roll vocals were few and far between, Lott played “Love Me” for Dot Records' top recording artist, Pat Boone.

Based on Pat's belief in the record's potential, Dot released a single in January 1960 with both of Lott's tunes (45-16056). Boone is also the one who suggested crediting the record to “The Phantom.”

Amazingly, Dot even issued the single in a custom black-and-white sleeve, picturing Jerry wearing a Lone Ranger-style mask. Having a picture sleeve was highly unusual for a Dot debut release by an unknown artist.

Even many the label's top-selling acts (Gale Storm; Hilltoppers; Fontane Sisters; Louis Prima; Lawrence Welk; etc.) didn't see a picture sleeve made for any of their Dot hits. Furthermore, only about 10% of Pat Boone's singles came with a custom sleeve.

IZ ZAT SO? Billboard's review (Feb. 29, 1960) of “Love Me” states: “A wild vocal that attempts to outdo Elvis at his wildest. Sleeve shows the Pantom (sic) with a blindfold over his eyes.”

This reviewer didn't know the difference between a blindfold, through which you see nothing, and a mask, with two cut out holes for the eyes.

Sounding like nothing else out there is sometimes an advantage, but that didn't help the Phantom. Dee jays didn't seem to love him and the record flopped.

Now quite rare, “Love Me,” the Phantom's only known record, can sell for around $300. With the picture sleeve that amount can more than double.

Both sides of the Phantom's single have been revived in recent decades; “Love Me,” by the Blue Cats in 1981, and “Whisper Your Love” by the Flat Duo Jets in '93.

our friends at pitchfork.com have a revealing article about some great album cover art, well worth checking out:

Take Cover: Bon Iver: Bon Iver

Artist Gregory Euclide on his surreal landscape sleeve

Notable record covers help to define artists. With Take Cover, we aim to track down the most striking sleeves and get the stories behind them.

Over the last few years, Minnesota artist Gregory Euclide has racked up an impressive list of gallery and museum showings for his skewed, three-dimensional take on the traditional landscape painting. His surreal and woodsy cover for Bon Iver's sophomore album is an excellent representation of his overall style; the original piece-- made specifically for the record-- is a surreal swirl of paint, melted snow, pine cones, and more. By including unorthodox, found elements in his work, Euclide offers art that not only depicts nature but emulates its cycle of transformation, too.

nice little article about vinyl!

Vinyl records' retro return

By Penni Crabtree

In an era of iPods and digital music, it's become the hippest of audio anachronisms - the vinyl record.

Declared dead in the 1980s, when major record store chains replaced vinyl record albums with the jewel cases for compact discs, records appeared destined for the great vinyl Frisbee dumpster.

Now a new generation of musicians and audiophiles, most of them raised on CDs and MP3, are giving records a spin again.

And that is giving a boost to everything from independent record stores to artists who are rediscovering the lost art of cover album art.

"It's the whole full-circle theory thing," said Curt Peterson, owner of Off the Record, a North Park music store that sells new and used vinyl records and CDs. "Vinyl is cool again."

APPARAT

**New Album out September 27th**

The Devil’s Walk Tracklisting:
Sweet Unrest
Song Of Los
Black Water
Goodbye
Candil De La Calle
The Soft Voices Die
Escape
Ash/Black Veil
A Bang In The Void
Your House Is My World

Apparat’s forthcoming album, The Devils Walk, will be released September 27th on Mute. The 10-track LP features “Black Water” and “Ash/Black Veil”, two new tracks off the new album that have been released as free downloads. Enthusiasm for both tracks has been overwhelmingly positive with close to 200,000 listens combined on SoundCloud alone.

It is safe to say that any electronic music enthusiast will have come across Berlin artist Sascha Ring at some point. Whether it be via the releases of his first three albums under Apparat, through the music of electronic supergroup Moderat, through his collaborations with other music greats such as Ellen Allien, or at one of his epic live club or festival performances, Sascha’s restless presence within the field of electronic music is unavoidable and elementary to the evolution of the genre.

The past year has seen Sacha’s creative focus return once again to Apparat. For the album, which was conceived during a trip to Mexico in early 2010, Sascha enlisted the talents of Joshua Eustis (of Telefon Tel Aviv) and Fredo Noguerira to help him write the music in a makeshift studio in the small town of Sayulita. After experiencing a lull in creative productivity induced by his return to Europe, it was upon meeting Patrick “Nackt” Christensen (formerly of electro-goth outfit Warren Suicide,) that Sacha became re-inspired. With the Nackt on board as a co-producer they re-worked the Mexican material taking it in a new and more esoteric direction, arriving at the majestic finished product that is The Devil’s Walk.

As an early track to be taken from the album, “Black Water” is a striking composition, compelling not only in its emotional content and aural beauty, but also in its capacity to represent Apparat’s eclecticmake-upand theiraptitude for breaking down electronic boundaries. As the mastermind behind Apparat’s evolution, Sascha approaches many of the mechanics of techno music; richly textured layers, sombre melodies and entrancing dynamics and revises them to produce an orchestral work, driven by fervent emotion rather than mechanical rhythm. His melancholic vocal supplements guitars, keyboards and drums.

Together they are suggestive of the progression from studio computer production to stage performance with a live band.

Within The Devil’s Walk, Saschahas evidently transcended both his love for techno and his expert programming skills to investigate an unknown musical realm.

Apparat proves they have the faculty to captivate listeners everywhere.

Apparat announces details of the first full scale tour as a four-piece band with UK dates including London’s Scala on July 25th, and dates across the UK in October. Visit www.apparat.net  for a list of dates.

and in music history for today:

In 1954, Sam Phillips gave Memphis DJ Dewey Phillips an acetate of Elvis Presley's That's All Right Mama.

In 1957, John Lennon and Paul McCartney met for the first time at The Woolton Church Parish Fete where The Quarry Men were appearing. As The Quarry Men were setting up for their evening performance, McCartney eager to impress Lennon picked up a guitar and played “Twenty Flight Rock” (Eddie Cochran) and “Be-Bop-A-Lula” (Gene Vincent). Lennon was impressed, and even more so when McCartney showed Lennon and Eric Griffiths how to tune their guitars, something they'd been paying someone else to do for them.

In 1963, two weeks after being released, The Surfaris' classic surf tune "Wipe Out" cracks the Billboard Hot 100 on its way to number two. The song was recorded as a "filler" in just two takes, but would stay in the Top 40 for ten weeks and become one of the most popular instrumentals in Rock 'n' Roll history.

The Beatles' A Hard Days Night premiered in London in 1964.

The Jefferson Airplane formed in 1965.

In 1971, jazz trumpeter, singer and bandleader, Louis Armstrong died. Had many hits including the 1964 U.S. #1 “Hello Dolly!” and the 1968 U.K. #1 “What a Wonderful World’ plus “When The Saints Go Marching In.” “Ain't Misbehavin’.” and “We Have all the Time in the World.” He made frequent use of laxatives as a means of controlling his weight, resulting in Armstrong appearing in humorous, advertisements for laxative product Swiss Kriss; the ads bore a picture of him sitting on a toilet, as viewed through a keyhole, with the slogan "Satch says, 'Leave it all behind ya!"

Queen released their first single, "Keep Yourself Alive" in 1973.

In 1974, The Hues Corporation had the top tune in the US with "Rock The Boat". The song features a lead vocal by Fleming Williams, who left the group shortly after the song was recorded.

The Damned performed for the first time in London in 1976.

In 1979, singer, producer songwriter, Van McCoy died from a heart attack in Englewood, New Jersey. Van McCoy and the Soul City had the U.S. #1 single “The Hustle.” He worked with Gladys Knight and the Pips, The Stylistics, Aretha Franklin and David Ruffin.

In 1980, 36 people are arrested at a Ted Nugent show in Hollywood, FL for smoking pot and throwing bottles.

In 2003, Clyde "Skip" Batton of Skip and Flip, died of complications from Alzheimer's disease at the age of 69. The duo scored a pair of Billboard number eleven hits with "It Was I" and "Cherry Pie". Batton also toured and recorded as a member of The Byrds from 1970 to 1973.

In 2003, eight people were struck by lightning in East Troy, WI while waiting for a Dave Matthews Band concert.

In 2010, Harvey Fuqua, a founding member of the Doo-Wop group The Moonglows who would go on to guide the career of Soul great Marvin Gaye, died of coronary problems at the age of 80 in a Detroit hospital.

birthdays today include Mike Shrieve (Santana) (62), John Keeble (Spandau Ballet) (52) and Nancy Griffith (58) (among many others)

Two singles from the legendary Shrine label made it out into the world and to the top of the list this week. All but about 50 copies of the first and only run of singles pressed by Shrine survived a warehouse fire that destroyed the complete production run and the label itself.

Michael Anthony Talks New Chickenfoot

Rock supergroup Chickenfoot just announced a while ago that they had finished mixing their upcoming second album, "Chickenfoot IV". With the record's release quickly approaching, bassist Michael Anthony, in a recent interview with Ultimate Classic Rock, answered several questions about the new album and related the group to Van Halen.

"[Chickenfoot is] like how Van Halen was in the early days. It's four friends getting together and having a good time", the bassist remarked. "I guess a lot of that has to do with, you know, we've all had our own careers and done really well. So, it's not like we have anything to prove, and we don't need to do it for the money, so we can do it just purely for the enjoyment of making music."

this out of new zealand (i believe, given the za link), some really intriguing artwork

Chilling art of the dark

Nerine Dorman

Welcome to a wonderland of the grotesque and the bizarre.

A skeletal horse accompanied by circling crows oozes horror as it splashes through a sepia-toned landscape. A man frowns out of a background littered with arcane symbols, something chillingly Charles Mansonesque about his demeanour.

These are just two of Sam Shearon’s photo-realistic visions that evoke Dali’s surrealist paintings and distort viewers’ perspectives, tipping them into a twisted wonderland populated by the grotesque and the bizarre.

Hailed as a master of dark art with a strong horror and steampunk theme, Shearon has carved a niche for himself in contemporary media, his somewhat macabre yet fascinating work appearing on album covers, posters and merchandise.

The Philippine media misrepresented this as a deliberate snub, and when Brian Epstein tried to make a televised statement, his comments were disrupted by static. As The Beatles made their way to the airport the next day, they were greeted by angry mobs as the Philippine government retaliated by refusing them police protection.

In 1969, Grand Funk Railroad performs at the Atlanta Pop Festival in Hampton, Georgia. Capitol Records executives see the band at the show and later sign them to a record deal.
