Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

It's Vinyl Record Day - Listen To And Appreciate Your Records!

August 12th is Vinyl Record Day and was launched in 2002 by Gary Freiberg.

Vinyl Record Day raises awareness on the importance of preserving vinyl records that once played such a pivotal role in American pop culture. Vinyl Record Day coincides with an important day in music history; on August 12, 1877, Thomas Edison invented the phonograph.

Vinyl Record Day is about celebrating vinyl records and the public should take notice of this special day. Invite friends and family over for a barbeque, maybe form a block party and play records, think records and talk about records and what they mean to each of us individually and culturally,” explains founder Gary Freiberg.

Working with Gary over the years, I know is fully committed to keeping vinyl alive and is very passionate about the subject.

I'll go one step further, and let you hear from the man himself:

So take time out and enjoy your music on this historic audio medium! (I am pulling out boxes of 45's and having a BBQ! tomorrow!)

HAPPY VINYL RECORD DAY!

With 'Jews on Vinyl' You Can Have Your Kitsch and Eat It, Too

By Rokhl Kafrissen

“Jews on Vinyl,” an unusual museum exhibit focused on the recent Jewish past, has arrived at the Yeshiva University Museum after touring the West Coast for two years. The exhibit is a project of the Reboot Stereophonic non-profit record label, and is based on the 2008 book “And You Shall Know Us by the Trail of Our Vinyl: The Jewish Past as Told by the Records We Have Loved and Lost,” a glossy collection of over 500 vintage record covers collected over 15 years by guest curators (and Stereophonic Reboot founders) Josh Kun and Roger Bennett.

Kiss Are About 'Self-Empowerment,' Not Merchandise 'Schlock' Says Paul Stanley

Kiss have long been famous for their savvy approach to merchandise, with the prime example being the Kiss Kasket, an actual coffin emblazoned with the band's logo and graphics (and now there's even a Kiss cremation urn). So, with all that Kiss-related swag and marketing tie-ins, does guitarist Paul Stanley worry that the band name is branded on too much stuff?

Never.

Coldplay will issue the follow-up to their 2008 album (Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends) 'Mylo Xyloto,' which was produced by Markus Dravs, Daniel Green and Rik Simpson. Former Warrant Vocalist Jani Lane Dies at 47

The Los Angeles Police Department News Release regarding the passing of former WARRANT singer Jani Laneread as follows:

"On August 11, 2011, patrol officers from Topanga station responded to a 9-1-1call of a death investigation in Woodland Hills.

"At around 5:30 p.m., Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics arrived to the 20100 block of Ventura Boulevard, immediately followed by Topanga Area officers. When emergency personnel arrived, the Fire Department pronounced the death of a 47-year-old man, later identified as Jani Lane, the lead singer of the popular rock band WARRANT.

"The cause of death is unknown and the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office is conducting an investigation into Mr. Lane's death."

Warrant posted the following statement regarding the death of their former vocalist Jani Lane yesterday:

"We are deeply saddened to hear the news of Jani's passing. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Jani was a very important part of our lives for a long time. We will always be incredibly proud of the music we created together.

He was a true talent and will be missed by all of us."

Lane penned Warrant's most famous songs including "Cherry Pie," "Heaven" and "Uncle Tom's Cabin." Over the years, Lane and the remaining members of Warrant had a tumultuous relationship. Lane left and rejoined the band several times, most recently reuniting with the original members in 2008. This reunion lasted only a few months and Lane was permanently replaced in Warrant by vocalist Robert Mason. In between his time with Warrant, Lane worked on several solo projects and toured with other 80s metal acts.

Slash: "Just heard about Jani Lane. What a shame. RIP man."

Nikki Sixx (Motley Crue): "I just heard the sad news about Janie Lane. So hard to swallow when people have kids. RIP."

Bret Michaels (Poison): “We'd like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of Jani Lane regarding their loss. Respectfully, Bret and all at MEGI.”

Alice Cooper: "Our thoughts go out to our fallen brother Jani Lane, his family, his friends and his fans."

and in music history for the day, August 12th (and may i add that some truly magical things - and sad things - were done on this date!!!):

As previously mentioned, in 1877, Thomas Edison invented the phonograph and made the first sound recording.

In 1960, Pete Best became the new drummer for The Beetles. (note the early spelling) Their previous drummer, Norman Chapman, had been called into Britain's armed forces after he had replaced Tommy Moore the month before. The band would leave for Hamburg, Germany the next day.

The Beatles' film A Hard Days Night opened in 500 American theaters in 1964.

In 1967, Fleetwood Mac played their first show at the Windsor Jazz and Blues Festival. The band members included Mick Fleetwood, Jeremy Spencer, Peter Green and Bob Brunning. John McVie wouldn't replace Brunning until a month later, which is rather odd, since the band has always maintained that the "Mac" part of their name was taken from "McVie

In 1968, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham played together for the first time when they rehearsed in a small basement room on Gerrard Street just south of London’s Soho district. The first song they played was a version of “Train Kept A-Rollin’.”

Blind Faith made their live debut at Madison Square Garden in New York in 1969.

In 1970, Janis Joplin performed her final concert, at Harvard University.

In 1972, Alice Cooper was at #1 on the U.K. singles chart with “School's Out.”

In 1978, the Commodores started a two-week run at #1 on the US singles chart with “Three Times a Lady.” The track also went to #1 in the U.K., becoming Motown's biggest British selling single. Lionel Richie wrote the song about his love for his wife, mother and grandmother, hence “Once, Twice, Three Times a Lady.”

In 1982, R&B soul singer Joe Tex died of a heart attack at the age of 44. He is most often remembered for his hits "I Gotcha", which made it up to #2 in 1972 and "Skinny Legs And All", #10 in 1967.

In 1985, Kyu Sakamoto was killed in a plane crash, when Japanese Airlines Flight 123 crashed and burned on a thickly wooded mountain about 60 miles northwest of Tokyo. He was 43. Sakamoto had the 1963 US #1 and UK #6 single, “Sukiyaki,” which made him the first Japanese artist to hit the top of the US singles chart.

In 1989, the two-day Moscow Music Peace Festival was held at The Lenin Stadium in Moscow, Russia. Western Acts who appeared included Mötley Crüe, Ozzy Osbourne, Bon Jovi, Skid Row and Scorpions. This was the first time that an audience had been allowed to stand up and dance at a stadium rock concert in the Soviet Union. Previous to this, all concerts had to be seated.

In 1994, Woodstock '94 opened in Saugerties, NY. The opening was on the 25th anniversary of the Woodstock Music and Art Fair.

In 1995, a wake was held for Jerry Garcia in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco.

In 1997, MTV debuted the Fleetwood Mac reunion concert. The special was taken from two performances at a Warner Brothers soundstage a few months earlier.

In 2008, John Lennon's killer was denied parole for a fifth time "due to concern for the public safety and welfare." 53 year old Mark David Chapman, who is being held at New York's Attica Correctional Facility, has been in prison for 27 years since pleading guilty to the murder, which he has said he committed to gain attention. Chapman's next appearance before the board was scheduled for August 2010. as I said before many times, let him rot...

In 2010, Richie Hayward, drummer and co-founder of Little Feat passed away at the age of 64 after contracting pneumonia as he battled liver cancer.

Indie Distributor Upbeat After Warehouse Fire

Independent music distributor Pias UK stated that they are optimistic that upcoming release dates will not be affected by the Sony warehouse fire. Sony has put a contingency plan into place and is back up and running from a new office with a temporary distributor ready to pack and ship orders over the next week.

Chief executive officer of Pias UK Nick Hartley told Sky News Online: "The focus is to work with the labels to get remanufacturing under way, starting with their the biggest sellers then working our way down, which should take a fair few weeks."

Musicians React to London Riots

by Cameron Matthews

Over the past four days, riots in London have rocked the British capitol with vandalism, fires and violence. Since the start of the troubles, artists have taken to Twitter and Facebook to express their dismay.

"Where the f--- are the Bullingdon boys? What's wrong you c---s? Would you only end your holidays if it were Fortnum & Mason being looted?" Franz Ferdinand frontman Alex Kapranos asked of his country's leaders, (via NME) while M.I.A. brewed contention with a riot-sympathizing tweet "I'm going down to the riots to hand out tea and mars bars."

Behind the music: How the Pias fire affects labels, artists and record stores

The stock may be insured, but what about labels with cashflow problems or record stores awaiting stock? We talk to them ...

A few days after the Sony DADC warehouse was set on fire during the riots in London, destroying a catastrophic amount of records, the independent music industry is counting the cost. The warehouse held stock to be delivered by independent distributor Pias, and for some labels, artists and retailers the future looks unsure.

Dance label Ninja Tune lost 120,000 records in the fire, including vinyl. "We're hoping our stock was insured, but we don't know at the moment," says the label's CEO, Pete Quick.

LP Interviews: Mightier Than Sword Records

written by Thomas Nassiff

The following is an interview with R.J. Crowder-Schaefer, owner and operator of Mightier Than Sword Records. It’s the first in a monthly series of interviews with Limited Pressing store owners.

In the interview, we talk to R.J. about his stance on preorders, how he normally goes about his label’s business and, of course, MTS’s well-known licensing of the Blink-182 discography. Enjoy!

For starters, let’s get a basic introduction out of the way. Who are you, what company do you run, and what do you do?

Hey, my name is R.J. Crowder-Schaefer, I run a company called Mightier Than Sword Records and I do a bunch of stuff, including A&R, mailorder/customer service, and most of the social media stuff.

Mightier Than Sword has been known for putting out its own releases as well as bringing older records to vinyl. What made you decide to go out and put some older records on vinyl, including some represses?

For the first couple years the label was a hobby for me, and we started licensing new releases to vinyl from labels that were only doing CD and digital.

sounds like a great little film, wish i could be there to see it

Film: “Under The Covers”

By Kathie Gibboney

The small, Old Center office converted into the El Coyote venue for the Topanga Film Festival, came complete with sawdust on the floor. The compact room was chilled, dark and promising, with about 30 seats.

A commercial space at the Old Center was transformed into an intimate screening room for documentaries about Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis, American Renegade, The Canoe Way —The Sacred Journey, and others.

The 3 p.m. Friday screening of “Under The Covers” compellingly captured the professional and personal relationship between two old campaigners from the world of rock and roll album covers, now a vanished art.

Back in the day, photographer Henry Diltz and art director/artist Gary Burden collaborated on album covers for, Crosby, Stills and Nash; Joni Mitchell; The Doors; The Eagles; Jackson Brown; America; and Jimmy Webb, amongst many others.

Arctic Monkeys Single Release Date Changes After London Fire

Arctic Monkeys' new single will no longer be shipped to stores because rioters set fire to a stock warehouse in London on Monday. The British rock and roll vets were planning to release 'The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala' next Monday, however their CD inventory was destroyed when the Sony Dadc distribution warehouse was torched by idiots.

As a result, only a limited number of vinyl copies will be made available to fans on the band's website, while the song will also be sold digitally online.

A spokesperson for Arctic Monkey's label, Domino Records, says, "While relieved that no one was injured in the incident, we're upset about the loss and destruction of our stock, and thinking of our friends at other independent labels who were also affected by the fire."

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

short post today, watching my 2 year old grandson, he's so cute, but devilish at times :O)

i am sure we will hear and read much more about this, but from first glance (and the list of labels that are involved) looks like the UK is screwed.....

Independent record labels fear ruinous stock loss in London riots fire

Stock to be distributed by Pias Group feared destroyed in blaze at Sony warehouse in Enfield

Caspar Llewellyn Smith, Tim Jonze and Helienne Lindvall

Numerous independent record labels fear they have lost a catastrophic amount of stock in a fire at a distribution warehouse in north London during the riots in the capital on Monday night. A three-storey, 20,000 square-metre building in Enfield, owned by Sony DADC and holding stock to be distributed by the Pias Group, was burned to the ground.

The fire will potentially impact labels such as Domino, as well as film production companies with DVD stock. Pias is the UK's largest independent sales, marketing and distribution company.

Other labels that may be affected include 4AD, Warp and Beggars Banquet. Beggars Group chairman Martin Mills confirmed his group had stock at the site, but told Music Week that he and other larger labels would be less affected by the disaster than smaller counterparts because they carried stock in other locations. Nevertheless, Mills called the latest setback for the indie sector "horrible, horrible" and added that many labels would also now face manufacturing issues to replenish destroyed stock.

Top 5 eBay Vinyl Record Sales - Week Ending 08/06/2011

Fairly tight wallets last week caused some typical $5k+ sellers like the Martsy Bach set and the Heartsman private funk LP to sell at bargain prices. Or, it's the end of the world. But we've been here before in the past few years, and this seems to be the most stable and resilient of collectible markets. Great music and ample IQ's tend to go together. No panic necessary. Put down the canned goods.

New Vinyl Record and Music Releases - August 9, 2011

I have added a couple of new sources for new music releases this week as i continue my quest to have the most comprehensive list of new music each week!

Jay-Z & Kanye West's collaboration called Watch the Throne makes the pop/rap news and is this week's star release. Neil Young is also releasing 'Live On Air/The Lost Tapes,' which has six previously unreleased live tracks for your listening pleasure.

I can strongly recommend Paul McCartney's Chaos And Creation In The Backyard, an appreciated effort by one of the masters of pop music and a reissue from Canadian's Barenaked Ladies with the kid's album called Snacktime.

Vinyl reissues are abundent this week including three by Belle & Sebastian (The Boy with the Arab Strap, If You're Feeling Sinister, Tigermilk), three from Cat Power (Jukebox, The Covers Record and What Would the Community Think) and two from Yo La Tengo (And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out and Painful).

On my radar are some vinyl reissues from my era including three from rock icons Black Sabbath (Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Sabotage and probably one of their finest recordings Vol. 4), UFO's The Chrysalis Yeasr: 1973-1979, Jefferson Starship's Red Octopus, Yes with Tales From Topographic Oceans and Styx with The Grand Illusion.
