GWAR Guitarist Cory Smoot Found Dead

The lead guitarist for the heavy metal band GWAR was found dead Thursday on the band's tour bus following a concert in Minneapolis, according to the band's manager and record label.

Manager Jack Flanagan and record label Metal Blade said Cory Smoot's body was discovered Thursday before the bus crossed into Canada on the Richmond, Va.-based band's tour. It's unclear what caused Smoot's death or how old he was. A person who answered the phone at the Smoot family residence in Richmond declined to comment. Flanagan and Metal Blade's Kelli Malella, vice president of publicity, said they had no further information to release about Smoot.

Dave Brockie, frontman for the Richmond, Virginia-based group, has issued the following statement:

"It is with a sense of profound loss and tragedy that the members of GWAR must announce the passing of their longtime guitarist and beloved friend Cory Smoot, also known to thousands of metal fans worldwide as Flattus Maximus. Cory was found deceased this morning as the band prepared for a border crossing. There is no word as to the cause of death and the members of GWAR are completely shocked and devastated that this has occurred. At this point there is no word on arrangements and the disposition of the remainder of GWAR's current North American tour, nor are there any details regarding long-term plans. At this point we are just dealing with the loss of our dear friend and brother, one of the most talented guitar players in metal today. We ask that our fans and the media be respectful of our request for privacy for those that have suffered this terrible loss. A full statement will be coming in the next day or so, in the meantime please give your thoughts and your prayers to Cory, his family, and all the people that love him."

Cory Smoot handled production duties on Gwar's latest two albums "Lust In Space" and "Bloody Pit of Horror." He also owned and operated his own recording studio, Karma Studios, where several of GWAR's albums had been recorded.

Original BLACK SABBATH Lineup To Make Mystery Announcement Next Week

The main page of BLACK SABBATH's official web site has updated with the date 11.11.11 (November 11, 2011) below the band's classic logo. All four original members of the legendary heavy metal group — Ozzy Osbourne (vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler (bass) and Bill Ward (drums) — will attend a special announcement ceremony that day. Former BLACK FLAG frontman Henry Rollins will host the private event, which will be held at the Whisky A Go Go in Hollywood, California — the same venue where the band made its Los Angeles debut on November 11, 1970 (41 years ago), opening for ALICE COOPER — at exactly 11:11 a.m.

Iommi told U.K.'s Terrorizer magazine that the four original members of BLACK SABBATH recently got together in a rehearsal room for the first time in years, adding, "[We] played some of the old stuff and to be together again was great. We're all on good terms and we're at a stage where we can play together again. It would be good if we could and I suppose it's the closest it's been to be able to do that. It could happen!"

music history for november 4th:

In 1961, Bob Dylan makes his debut at the Carnegie Chapter Hall in New York City. Most of the fifty people in attendance are his friends who paid two bucks to get in. Dylan was paid twenty dollars for the night.

In 1963, the Beatles topped the bill at The Royal Variety Show at The Prince of Wales Theatre, London. With the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret in the audience, this was the night when John Lennon made his famous remark, “For the people in the cheaper seats, clap your hands. And the rest of you, if you’d just rattle your jewelry.” John would later say "I was fantastically nervous, but I wanted to rebel a bit and that was the best I could do."

In 1972, eight weeks after entering the Billboard Hot 100, "I Can See Clearly Now" by Johnny Nash claims the top spot. It made #5 in the UK.

In 1974, even though he was the one who was the most opposed to touring in the final years of The Beatles, George Harrison became the first to set out on a solo tour when he appeared in Vancouver, Canada with Billy Preston. It will be a troublesome show for him as his voice is ravaged after LP sessions and tour rehearsals. The concert and the rest of the tour played in front of thin crowds.

In 1977, 'The Last Waltz,' the movie of The Band’s final concert, premiered in New York. The Martin Scorsese movie also featured Joni Mitchell, Dr. John, Neil Young, Van Morrison, Neil Diamond, Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan.

In 1978, after returning from a two year hiatus, Anne Murray topped the Billboard Hot 100 with the biggest selling single of her career, "You Needed Me". It was her fourth US Top Ten single and made #22 in the UK. Anne would go on to put six more songs on Billboard's Top 40 Pop chart.

In 1978, Boston played their first show in the city of Boston.

In 1984, Prince opened the North American portion of his Purple Rain tour with seven nights at Joe Lewis Arena in Detroit, MI.

In 1991, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Booker T. & The M.G.'s, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash, The Isley Brothers, The Yardbirds, and Sam & Dave are elected to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

In 1992, Elton John and his songwriting partner Bernie Taupin sign a $39 million publishing contract with Warner-Chappell music.

In 1994, Fred Smith, guitarist for the MC5 on their Shock-Rock hit "Kick Out The Jams", died of heart failure at the age of 46.

In 1997, after an 18 month delay, Capitol Records releases The Beach Boys' "The Pet Sounds Sessions", a 4-CD boxed set which details the creation of The Beach Boys' album "Pet Sounds". Overseen by producer Brian Wilson, the collection allows the listener to hear a capella vocals from the master tapes and alternate mixes of the songs.

In 2007, the Eagles went to #1 on the UK album chart for the first time ever with Long Road Out of Eden – 33 years after their debut album On the Border. This was the group’s first full studio album since The Long Run in 1979.

Beatles Top The List Of World's Most Valuable Record Sleeves

Record Collector Magazine's Top Ten Listed

A Beatles sleeve featuring the faces of music executives in place of the Fab Four has been declared the world's most valuable record cover. An LP sleeve, a variation on The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band cover, has been valued at over $100,000 by Record Collector Magazine.

The heftily-priced limited edition Sgt Pepper sleeve was created for Christmas 1967 to celebrate the success of the album. Sir Peter Blake's original collage image was revamped to insert the faces of US label bosses from Capitol Records, replacing the band and many of the other notable figures who had originally featured, although Bob Dylan and Sonny Liston were among those who were retained. Only around 100 are thought to have been made, with just three known copies in the hands of collectors. The list of the most valuable record sleeves also includes the famous banned "butcher" sleeve which was briefly issued in the US, and some of the numbered copies of their 1968 self-titled release, often known as the 'White Album.'

Ian Shirley, editor of the Rare Record Price Guide 2012, who compiled the list, said: "While pristine records and inserts are vital to securing a top price, the numbered sleeve is the main attraction. The hunger to collect low numbers remains undiminished amongst Beatles fans."

Record Collector editor Ian McCann said: “Every so often I get asked why vinyl persists as a music medium despite it being archaic and inconvenient compared to MP3.

“One of the answers is the artwork: people like to hold a vinyl record, look at the sleeve, take in the information and the photo on the cover. That is something that an MP3 will never be able to compete with.”

Record Collector’s Top 10 list of most valuable album sleeves:

1. The Beatles - Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band [limited edition Capitol version] (1967)

2. The Beatles - The Beatles (1968). Numbers 1-10

3. Madrigals - Magic Key To Spanish Volumes 1 and 2 (1953) £3,500; The Nation's Nightmare (1951)

4. The Beatles - Introducing The Beatles (1964)

5. The Beatles/Frank Ifield - England's Greatest Recording Stars: The Beatles & Frank Ifield On Stage (1964)

6. Tinkerbell's Fairydust - Tinkerbell's Fairydust (1969)

7. AC/DC - 12 Of The Best (1978)

8. The Beatles - Yesterday And Today (1966)

9. Dark - Dark Round The Edges (1972)

10. Hank Mobley - Hank Mobley (1957)

The Fling

What I've Seen

Digital/Vinyl Exclusive

The Fling are set to release their seven song EP What I’ve Seen on Dangerbird Records on November 1st – their second release for the label following their LP When The Madhouses Appear. The EP highlights the band’s lush guitar sound-scapes and ethereal harmonies on songs written by brothers Graham and Dustin Lovelis as well as newest addition, Joel Bond.

Of the EP, Graham says, “What I’ve Seen is a collection of songs that were written and recorded very quickly. That process helped capture the band’s unfiltered sound. Some of the songs came into the studio as adults and knew exactly what they wanted while others were in the awkward, pre-teen stages and needed some navigation. We purposefully went into the studio with unrehearsed songs to liven the sessions. The chaos that comes with letting a young song run rampant is one of the most stimulating experiences that artists can have. It’s very engaging for everyone in the room. The kids get vicious, talk back and you have to discipline them. They become our messed up little family that we have to tame. We’re very pleased with the end result and how varied, yet cohesive it came out. It has a mood disorder.  It goes back and forth from sunny and upbeat to dark and heavy with no warning and that is how we like it. That’s how life is.”

Sea Wolf to Release Limited Edition 7" Vinyl on November 25th

For Record Store Day’s “Back to Black Friday” event on November 25th, Dangerbird Records will be issuing a limited edition 7” vinyl piece from Sea Wolf featuring two rare & unreleased songs, “Song of the Magpie,” and “Where The Wind Blows.”

The vinyl will be available at independent music shops on November 25th, and the digital version will be on iTunes, AmazonMP3, Rdio, Spotify and all digital service providers on December 13th.

RELEASE: NOVEMBER 8TH, 2011

This is the music of the champion, jammin' 7er. This is the most exciting moment in music right here, gorilla. Ladies and gentlemen this is the main event, from East Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, at a combined age of one hundred and forty three, Men At Adventure! I wouldn't kick the B-side out of bed for eating crackers either. "The Ballad", a murder ballad to be exact, is a neo-stoner take on 90s San Diego post-hardcore. Like a showdown between Drive Like Jehu and their DC rivals, it's a full-on shoot-out with Cory Gagnes’ snare providing the gunshots, and there's only one way to find out who's the last man standing...

fanatstic write up about one of the best songwriters we have, read on:

Refusing to settle, Paul Simon brings new music to KC

His recent CD, ‘Beautiful,’ reflects his desire to ‘keep changing all the time.’

By TIMOTHY FINN The Kansas City Star

On his latest album, “So Beautiful or So What,” Paul Simon takes his listeners into heaven, which his song says isn’t the place everyone thinks it is.

Rather, it’s a lot like many Earthly bureaucracies.

To a shuffly and funky beat with a Zydeco flavor, he sings: “I thought it was odd there was no sign of God / Just to usher me in / Then a voice from above sugarcoated with love / Said, ‘Let us begin / You got to fill out a form first / And then you wait in the line.”

Lyrically and musically, Simon has been taking listeners to places worldly and otherwise for more than 45 years, since his earliest days with Simon & Garfunkel.

Willie Nelson Covers Country Classics on New Album

Willie Nelson will release a new album of country covers, Remember Me, Vol. 1, on Nov. 21 on R&J Records. A second volume is expected next year. Nelson teamed with producer James Stroud for the project. The track list stretches from the mid-1940s, including Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys' "Roly Poly" and Tex Williams' "Smoke! Smoke! Smoke! (That Cigarette"), to 1989, with Vern Gosdin's "That Just About Does It." However, most of the material originates from the 1950s, including classics from Tennessee Ernie Ford, George Jones, Webb Pierce, Ray Price, Hank Snow, Ernest Tubb and Porter Wagoner, along with Rosemary Clooney's 1954 pop hit, "This Old House." Nelson also covers Kris Kristofferson's "Sunday Morning Coming Down" (1970) and Merle Haggard's "Today I Started Loving You Again" (1970) and Ramblin' Fever" (1977).

and in music history for the day:

In 1957, Sam Cooke appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show to sing "You Send Me", but is cut off before he can finish the number when the show ran out of time. He is invited to come back next month.

CVR Blog 45rpmFacts

In 1957, "At the Hop" was released by Danny & the Juniors. The song sold 7,000 copies in and around Philadelphia when it was first issued on the small independent Singular label. This song stayed on the top of US charts for nearly 7 weeks and sold over 2 million copies worldwide.

The song was written by White, Medora and Singer in 1957, when Danny & the Juniors were still called The Juvenairs. Initially called "Do the Bop", the song was heard by Dick Clark, who suggested they change its name. After performing the song on Clark's show American Bandstand, it gained popularity and went to the top of the US charts.

Danny and the Juniors were the Philadelphia group of Danny Rapp, Dave White, Frank Maffei and Joe Terranova. At the time, they were known as The Juvenairs. They were on a street corner singing when a someone who worked at a recording studio heard them and brought them in to sing. The "Bah"'s go in this order of singers:

Bah 1, Terranova (also does the Oh, Baby)
Bah 2, Rapp (Lead Singer and choreographer. He committed suicide in 1983 in a Holiday Inn in Arizona with a shotgun, he owned a black 1958 Impala Convertible with a continental kit)
Bah 3, Maffei (First Tenor)
Bah 4, White (Second Tenor)

The song describes the scene at a record hop, particularly the dances being performed and the interaction with the disc jockey host.

Sha-Na-Na played this at Woodstock in 1969. They were relatively unknown at the time and performed covers of '50s hits and Doo-Wop songs. Their Woodstock performance, which preceded Jimi Hendrix, helped launch their career, which led to their own TV show in 1977.

In 1962, a song called "He's A Rebel" topped the Billboard Hot 100, credited to The Crystals. In reality, the song was recorded by a trio known as the Blossoms, featuring lead singer Darlene Love. Phil Spector had hastily put the song together while The Crystals were out of town and put their name on the label because they had already had two top twenty hits with "There's No Other" and "Uptown".

In 1967, Pink Floyd make their US debut at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. The tour will come to an early end when Syd Barrett displays increasingly strange behavior, refusing to lip sync to "Arnold Layne" on American Bandstand and refusing to answer questions on The Pat Boone Show.

In 1967, the Beatles completed filming of Magical Mystery Tour.

In 1976, country rock band Firefall was awarded a Gold record for their self-titled debut album, which includes the #9 US hit single, "You Are the Woman".

In 1979 British musician Robin Scott, using the pseudonym M, topped the US singles chart with a Techno-Pop, dance tune called "Pop Muzik". The record had reached number two in England the previous May.

The U2 concert movie "Rattle And Hum" opened in 1988.

In 1990, the Righteous Brothers' version of "Unchained Melody" rose to #1 on the UK singles chart 25 years after it had first been released. The track had recently been featured in the film Ghost.

Also in 1990, “Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice became the first rap record to top the US singles chart. The track was initially released as the B-side to the rapper’s cover of “Play That Funky Music,” and became the A-side after US DJs started playing the track. music has never been the same since!

In 1991, a free concert in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco was held to honor the memory of promoter Bill Graham, who was killed in a helicopter crash the week before. Journey, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, The Grateful Dead and Joan Baez were the featured acts.

Also in 1991, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Booker T. & The M.G.s, Johnny Cash, Jimi Hendrix, The Isley Brothers, Sam & Dave and The Yardbirds are elected to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

'Keep The Faith' by Bon Jovi was released in 1992. It was their first album in 5 years.

John Denver's last recording, "The Unplugged Collection," was released in the UK in 1997.

In 1998, in the US, Alanis Morissette's "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie," Beck's "Mutations," Celine Dion's "These Are Special Times," U2's "The Best of 1980-1990," and the John Lennon boxed set "Anthology" were all released.

In 2002, Santana topped the Billboard album chart with "Shaman", their fourth US #1 album. It would later be certified Double Platinum by the RIAA on the strength of the singles "The Game of Love" and "Why Don't You & I".

In 2002, the king of Skiffle, Lonnie Donegan, died at the age of 71, midway through a UK tour. One of the most successful recording artists of the pre-Beatles era, Donegan had three number one hits and numerous Top 10 entries on the UK chart. In the US he was best known for the Top Ten hits, "Rock Island Line" and "Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor On The Bedpost Over Night".

Roger Waters Makes His Triumphant Return to North America in 2012 With His Extraordinary Aural and Visual Masterpiece: "The Wall"

"The best arena show ever. Period." - New York Post (2010)

"The Wall Live is flawless. Everyone should see it once before they die."- Philadelphia Inquirer (2010)

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 2, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Roger Waters, the co-founder and principal songwriter of the archetypal progressive band Pink Floyd, has announced the return of the historic production of "The Wall" to North America in 2012. His aural and visual masterpiece of alienation and transformation will be performed in-its-entirety featuring a full band and state-of-the-art production. "The Wall" live has played more than 120 shows around the world for more than 1.6 million fans making it one of the most successful tours of 2010 and 2011. Tickets for "The Wall" 2012 go on sale beginning on Monday, November 7th at LiveNation.com.

The 2012 tour will begin on May 1st in Houston, Texas at the Toyota Center making a 36 show trek throughout North America, including several outdoor stadium performances with state of the art modifications transforming the arena production into magnificent outdoor events. The tour, promoted by Live Nation, includes stadium stops in San Francisco at AT&T Park on May 11th, Vancouver at BC Place on May 26th, Chicago's Wrigley Field on June 8th, Toronto at Rogers Centre on June 23rd and Philadelphia at the Citizens Bank Park on July 14th.

"Thirty years ago when I wrote 'The Wall,' I was a frightened young man," Waters recalls. "In the intervening years it occurred to me that maybe the story of my fear and loss with its concomitant inevitable residue of ridicule, shame and punishment, provides an allegory for broader concerns: Nationalism, racism, sexism, religion, whatever! All these issues and 'isms are driven by the same fears that drove my young life."

Waters' first reinvented his iconic stage production of "The Wall" in 2010 utilizing modern day technological advances and special effects which have been embraced by audiences around the globe with countless sold out performances and multiple-night stands including a record-breaking 9 sold out shows at the River Plate Stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina. "The Wall" remains one of the most influential albums in the history of recorded music with a profound effect on pop culture, resonating with multiple generations of music fans.

Prior to 2010, "The Wall" show was simply too large to contemplate a tour, but new arenas and advances in touring technology have solved that dilemma. Waters has updated the look and feel of the show to ensure it matches the astonishing theatrical extravaganza that The Wall's live incarnation became so legendary for - thus allowing yet another generation to be inspired by the grandeur of the breathtaking visual and aural spectacle. The 1980 original production of the "The Wall" had been performed live-in-its-entirety just 29 times during Pink Floyd's 1980 tour in support of the album and once in Berlin in celebration of the fall of the Berlin wall.

"Roger Waters tore down the house Wednesday night in Toronto...He walked out to thunderous applause beginning with the first track of the seminal concept album, 'In the Flesh', and the adulation never stopped." - Associated Press (opening night 2010)

In addition to Roger Waters (lead vocals, bass), "The Wall" live touring ensemble includes: Snowy White (Guitar), Dave Kilminster (Guitar), GE Smith (Guitar & Bass), Jon Carin (Keyboards), Harry Waters (Hammond Organ), Graham Broad (Drums), Robbie Wyckoff (Vocals), Jon Joyce, Pat Lennon, Mark Lennon and Kipp Lennon (Backing Vocals).

Blues-Rock Star Joe Bonamassa Will Host a Keeping The Blues Alive Session in Albany, NY at the Palace Theatre on Wednesday, November 9

Keeping The Blues Alive 501(c) seeks to promote Blues music through regularly scheduled school assemblies, and provide funding and educational scholarships for blues based music programs

Bonamassa is a torchbearer for the foundation, helping to create awareness about the blues while educating and empowering young people

DEERFIELD, Fla., Nov. 2, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Award-winning blues-rock artist, guitar hero and singer-songwriter Joe Bonamassa will host a Keeping The Blues Alive session in Albany, NY at the Palace Theatre on Wednesday, November 9. Keeping The Blues Alive 501(c) is a nonprofit organization founded by Bonamassa aimed at promoting and preserving the heritage of blues music. Through regularly scheduled events, Keeping The Blues Alive will help to create awareness about the blues and its impact on our culture, while educating and empowering the next generation of youth. Bonamassa will donate his time throughout select cities on his U.S. tour to an hour long, educational, entertaining, and inspiring lecture for students aged 13-21. As Keeping The Blues Alive expands, its goal will include providing funding for music and educational programs. It also seeks to provide televised exposure of blues music to replace the loss of music education in schools. If you are unfamiliar with Joe's music, enjoy this free download of his recent hit single, "Dust Bowl" bitly.com

Bonamassa's hour-long program is designed for students aged 13 - 21. During the events, he plays live, discusses the origins of blues music and his life as a musician, offers guitar technique and emphasizes the blues’ relevance to contemporary music. He links it to modern blues idioms as well as connecting it to rock 'n roll, hip-hop and other genres, often featuring current and contemporary interpretations of traditional American blues songs. All of this is achieved by instilling a message that through perseverance, hard work, and dedication, one can achieve the dreams they desire.

"Securing the future of blues music, and helping its legacy as an original American art form live on, is something to which I am deeply committed. In introducing blues to a younger generation, and hopefully inspiring others to support it and play it, my hope is that the music will remain a living, breathing tradition carried forth by new practitioners all the time," said Bonamassa.

Keeping The Blues Alive works with tour markets in advance of Bonamassa's shows to reach out to local schools and communities for participation and support. All Keeping The Blues Alive events are held at the same venue location as Bonamassa's show and are free to students and faculty. As the organization grows, it hopes to contribute further, providing funding and educational scholarships for blues-based music programs throughout the country.

liked this article and there is some interesting album cover art to gaze at (some, I have never seen before):

Artistically Inspired Urban Album Covers

By Kendra Gaines

Music is probably the number one inspirational source for a lot of artists and designers. Music can express great emotions that will often move its creative listeners to try and capture and convey and those feelings in their own art. Regardless of your favorite genre, music is sometimes key to the creative process.

The second greatest part of music for most designers is the album cover and/or packaging. This is the bit that essentially tries to sum up the feel and the message behind all the music on an album; and it also becomes the iconic look for a classic album (think Pink Floyd and Aerosmith, just to name a few). These types of artistically and creatively fueled album covers provide lots of inspiration for various artists.

and in music history for november 2:

In 1955, Tennessee Ernie Ford's "Sixteen Tons" begins a ten week stay on the Billboard chart, where it will eventually reach #1. The record will become one of the biggest selling singles of the 1950s.

In 1956, police used tear gas to break up a riot that broke out during a Fats Domino concert in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Fats and three of his sidemen suffered minor injuries.

The Elvis Presley film "Girls! Girls! Girls!" premiered in 1962.

Mississippi John Hurt died in 1966 at the age of 73.

In 1967, the Beatles completed recording their next single “Hello Goodbye” at Abbey Road studios in London with a second Paul McCartney bass line. The McCartney song had been selected for the A-side for the Beatles next single, the flip side to be Lennon’s “I Am the Walrus.”

Stevie Wonder's "For Once In My Life" was released in 1968.

In 1968, appearing at Madison Square Garden on their farewell tour of the US, Atco Records presents Cream with a Platinum disc for $2 million worth of sales of the double album 'Wheels of Fire.'

In 1969, “Sugar Sugar” by The Archies was at #1 on the UK singles chart. The single became the longest-running one-hit wonder in the UK with eight weeks at the top of the charts.

In 1974, George Harrison became the first Beatle to undertake a solo world tour when he played the first show of a 30-night tour in Vancouver, Canada.

Also in 1974, Bad Company's first Billboard chart entry "Can't Get Enough" tops out at #5. The British quartet would go on to place eight more songs in the US Top 40, but only one, "Feel Like Makin' Love", would crack the Top 10.

In 1979, AC/DC played the second of three sold-out nights at the Hammersmith Odeon, London, England, with Def Leppard supporting.

In 1984, after a judge rules that he shot in self defense, The Reverend Marvin Gay Sr. is given only five years probation for killing his son, Marvin Gaye. (Marvin added an "e" to his stage name) Ironically, it was Marvin Jr. who had given his father the .38 revolver used in the killing.

In 1985, the TV soundtrack from Miami Vice went to #1 on the U.S. album chart. It spent a total of 11 weeks at #1.

Profits from the show would go toward scholarships in Ertegun’s name in the U.K., U.S. and the country of his birth, Turkey.

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 31, 2011

DEAR JERRY: I read your informative explanation of the subtle differences between answer songs, sequels, responses, and parodies.

I'm not sure how it fits in, but in the 1970s there was a somewhat memorable hit in California that is hard to categorize.

Unfortunately, the details are even harder to remember.

What I do recall is it has a summer theme, and the title of the song is identical to a song being sung about in the lyrics. Though they are not the same song, one song is about the other. I never heard anything like it before or after.

Can you identify it? What would you call this type song?
—David Keene, San Francisco

DEAR DAVID: I would call it brilliant!

First, and this is the easy part, are the details. It is “Summertime Lovin',” written and performed by Layng Martine Jr. (Playboy 6081), issued in the bicentennial summer of 1976.

Now let's work through the confusing part.

In “Summertime Lovin',” Martine recalls one July, many summers ago, when he first crossed paths with a carhop at a drive-in restaurant.

He heard her singing what was the No. 1 song back then, titled “Summertime Lovin'.” This of course became “their song,” and, still thinking back, he adds: “the lyrics to that song kinda swept us along.”

Thus we have a song titled “Summertime Lovin',” dedicated to an older and completely different song of the same title.

I can think of no other song that uses this imaginative concept.

As for Layng Martine Jr. the composer, BMI lists over 300 diverse songs by him. From those I have selected 10 familiar favorites:

1974: “Everybody Needs a Rainbow” (Ray Stevens)
1974: “Rub It In (Billy “Crash” Craddock)
1975: “Love You Back to Georgia” (Freddy Weller)
1977: “Way Down” (Elvis Presley)
1978: “I'm Gonna Love You Anyway” (Christy Lane)
1982: “Should I Do It” (Pointer Sisters)
1992: “The Greatest Man I Never Knew” (Reba McEntire)
1994: “Maybe She's Human” (Kathy Mattea)
1995: “I Wanna Go Too Far” (Trisha Yearwood)
1995: “I Was Blown Away” (Pam Tillis)

DEAR JERRY: In the home where I grew up in the '60s, we frequently played Marty Robbins' albums of western music.

Among his many cowboy tunes is one that I still have a question about.

In “Little Joe the Wrangler,” we hear that Joe's spur had “rung its nell.” Is the nell a part of a spur, the saddle, or something else?
—Shirley Westphall, Waco, Texas

DEAR SHIRLEY: Taken out of context, homophones can cause confusion. In this usage, involving nell and knell (silent 'k'), the meaning is quite clear.

From the story, we know that the next morning, after a storm caused the cattle to stampede, the body of Little Joe the Wrangler was found “beneath his horse, his life was gone, his spur had rung its knell.”

Metaphorically, the mournful ringing of the knell signified Little Joe's death.

IZ ZAT SO? Here is a fascinating addendum to the knell/nell sidebar: “Little Joe the Wrangler” is a 100-year-old western classic, having been recorded by numerous singers. Not nearly as well known is a sequel that picks up the story shortly after Little Joe's untimely demise. Its title, coincidentally I believe, is “Little Joe the Wrangler's Sister, Nell.”

Celebrate Black Friday With Limited Edition 10" Vinyl Releases From Soundgarden, Nirvana and Pete Townshend

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 31, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Instead of dealing with the madness of holiday shopping crowds, UMe is offering music fans an alternative. On "Black Friday," November 25, 2011, the biggest shopping day of the year, Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) announces a series of "Back To Black" limited edition, individually numbered 10" vinyl releases from Soundgarden, Nirvana and Pete Townshend.

Soundgarden - Before The Doors: Live On I-5 Soundchecks:

"I will always be thankful to independent record stores for providing me with an encyclopedic source for an education in popular music. Especially of rare, import, indie, local, and experimental records, artists, and genres." - Kim Thayil

Hot on the heels of Soundgarden's highly successful 2011 summer tour, for Black To Black Friday UMe will release the individually numbered, limited-edition 10"-vinyl EP from Soundgarden - Before The Doors: Live On I-5 Soundchecks as the companion piece to the band's first-ever live album, Live On I-5, released earlier this year. Recorded during their 1996 tour, Before The Doors: Live On I-5 Soundchecks features "No Attention," "Never The Machine Forever" and a freaked-out version of the Doors' "Waiting For The Sun," taken from their soundcheck at Kaiser Convention Center in Oakland, CA, on December 5, 1996; "Room A Thousand Years Wide" taken from PNE Forum in Vancouver, Canada, on December 7, 1996; and "Somewhere" taken from their soundcheck at Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento, CA, on December 4, 1996.

Nirvana – Nevermind: The Singles:

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the release of Nirvana's generation-defining album Nevermind, which has sold over 30 million copies worldwide. And now, for the first time, all four of the original singles from this iconic album are being reissued in a limited-edition 10"-vinyl box set. Each box set will be individually numbered and this marks the first time Nirvana's music has ever been pressed on 10" vinyl. Featured are the band's monumental singles "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (edit) with its B-sides "Drain You" (LP version), "Even In His Youth" and "Aneurysm"; "Come As You Are" (LP version) with the B-sides "Endless, Nameless" "School" (live) and "Drain You" (live); "Lithium" (LP version) featuring the B-sides "Been A Son" (live), "Curmudgeon" and "D-7" (taken from a John Peel session); and "In Bloom" (LP version) featuring live versions of "Sliver" and "Polly." Each single comes in a slipcase picture sleeve and includes the original artwork. Earlier this year UMe released a two-disc Deluxe and a Super Deluxe five-disc box set to commemorate one of the most influential albums of an era. Nevermind shot up to No. 2 on the Billboard Catalog chart along with the recently released concert film Live At The Paramount DVD & Blu-ray debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard DVD chart.

Pete Townshend - The Quadrophenia Demos 1:

Quadrophenia is one of the most widely recognized albums of The Who's career because of its classic depiction of mod culture, its renowned imagery, and the magnificent music and powerful performances. For Black Friday, UMe will release the first of two limited-edition, individually numbered, 10"-vinyl EPs, featuring six demos from the forthcoming "Director's Cut" box set of Quadrophenia, out November 15. Included are demo versions of "The Real Me" recorded in October 1972; "Cut My Hair" written in June 1972; "Punk" recorded in November 1972; "Dirty Jobs" recorded in July 1972; "Is It In My Head" recorded in April 1972; and the never-before-released track "Anymore," recorded in November 1971. The Quadrophenia Demos 1 is the first of two exclusive releases with the second, a five-track companion 10" EP, scheduled for release on Record Store Day in April 2012. It will be the first time any of these tracks appear on vinyl and will not be made available anywhere else. The combined two releases encompass 11 of the demos from the forthcoming box set and provide a unique insight into the creation of this landmark album.

The Soundgarden - Before The Doors: Live On I-5 Soundchecks, Nirvana – Nevermind: The Singles and Pete Townshend - The Quadrophenia Demos 1 will be made available at Record Store Day-participating stores worldwide. Candy-O by The Cars

180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed

How did the Cars move beyond their smash 1978 debut (also available on Mobile Fidelity 180-gram LP) and secure their status as one of music’s leading bands for years to come? Look no further than the quadruple-platinum Candy-O. Continuing along the streamlined pop paths of its predecessor, the sophomore effort is preoccupied with desirable women that are as mysterious, sexy, and cool as the group’s music—and the record’s pin-up cover.

With rare exception, few new-wave artists enjoyed much of a career outside of a one-hit wonder. Candy-O proves the Cars were anything but. It’s loaded with minimalist atmospherics, pulsing bass lines, catchy refrains, and labyrinthine synthesizers that stick in your mind for days. And while retaining a simplicity that’s a Cars hallmark, the album also takes myriad stylistic detours: the glam-rock accents of “Dangerous Type,” a song whose title references the record’s mysterious and lusty matter; the percolating riffs of the contagious title track; the dizzying garage-rock nature of the upbeat “Got a Lot on My Mind,” complete with a tooting Farfisa organ. Nothing drags or feels out of place.

Through it all, vocalists Benjamin Orr and Ric Ocasek keep their heads about themselves, singing in direct albeit detached tones that convey the tension, excitement, and risky promise inherent in the lyrics. Hook-laced choruses abound. Yet all is not what it seems.

“Hooks are mechanical by nature, but the affectlessness of these deserves special mention; only listeners who consider alienation is the craze a great insight will find much meaning here. On the other hand, only listeners who demand meaning in all things will find this useless. Cold and thin, shiny and hypnotic, it's what [the Cars] do best--rock and roll that is definitely pop without a hint of cuteness.” –Robert Christgau, The Consumer Guide

Half-speed mastered from the original analog tapes, Mobile Fidelity’s numbered limited-edition LP brings the Cars’ distinctive melodies and exotic arrangements to the fore in ways that have never been heard outside of the recording studio. For the first time, Roy Thomas Baker’s vocal production shines, with each member’s contributions rescued from a cold sonic murk that detracted from the music’s impact on both vinyl and the extremely compressed CD. Once you hear the newly uncovered dynamics and rich textures, you’ll be wondering where they were all of these years. Chalk this up as an essential addition to your pop collection.

Track List:
1. Let's Go
2. Since I Held You
3. It's All I Can Do
4. Double Life
5. Shoo Be Doo
6. Candy-O
7. Nightspots
8. You Can't Hold On Too Long
9. Lust for Kicks
10. Got A Lot On My Head
11. Dangerous Type

Broken Boy Soldiers by The Raconteurs

Copper-embossed, gatefold tip-on jackets from Stoughton

“Broken Boy Soldiers” is the debut album from the Raconteurs. By pairing pop songsmith Brendan Benson with hard-rocking Jack White (the White Stripes) and backing them with the crack rhythm section of Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler (both of the Greenhornes) what resulted is a completely kick-ass album. From the anthemic volley of “Steady, As She Goes” to the sing-songy crunch of “Hands” and the downright sinister slow creep of “Blue Veins” this album covers the complete range of human emotion.

“Broken Boy Soldiers” is the first proper vinyl reissue from Third Man (both the V2 and XL versions of this LP are out-of-print) with plans to tackle the rest of the White Stripes and Jack White back catalog already in the works. Third Man aims for these reissues to be the definitive, go-to versions of all their titles and this issue of “Broken Boy Soldiers” definitely earns that distinction.

Tracklist:
1. Steady As She Goes
2. Hands
3. Broken Boy Soldier
4. Intimate Secretary
5. Together
6. Level
7. Store Bought Bones
8. Yellow Sun

=============

and in music history for today, november 1st:

In 1894, Billboard Advertising was published for the first time, later to become Billboard.

In 1955, an R&B group called the Famous Flames, lead by singer James Brown, cut their first demo of "Please, Please, Please" at a radio station in Macon Georgia. It will lead to their signing with King Records.

In 1956, Elvis Presley bought a new Harley-Davidson motorbike. Presley spent the day riding round Memphis on his new bike with actress Natalie Wood.

In 1958, Russian leaders dub Elvis Presley as "public enemy number one."

In 1959, after cracking the US Top 40 twice while with Atlantic Records, Ray Charles signs with ABC-Paramount, where he will have 24 more Billboard hits.

Also in 1959, for the first time since 1954, Elvis Presley doesn't have a record on any of the Billboard charts. He is currently in Germany serving with the US Army.

In 1962, while The Beatles were appearing at the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany, a recording was made on a small, portable tape recorder which would be pressed and issued by Singasong Records in 1977 as "Live! At the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany, 1962".
