Various Artists - The Lost Notebooks Of Hank Williams LP
Includes 180 Gram Black LP, CD and Poster
Stemming from unused lyrics left behind by the legendary singer after his death in 1953 and spearheaded by Bob Dylan, the album has a wide spectrum of current artists putting the music to Williams' lyrics with fantastic results.
Third Man Records, along with Egyptian Records, Bob Dylan's label imprint, in partnership with the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum's CMF Records and Columbia Records, will release The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams.
The second title ever to be released on Egyptian (the first was 1997's The Songs of Jimmie Rodgers - A Tribute Album), The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams is a long-awaited collection of previously unrecorded Hank Williams lyrics newly set to music and performed for the first time as completed songs by a roster of artists with a musical and spiritual kinship to the archetypal American country music singer-songwriter.
The release of The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams provides an audio companion to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum's Family Tradition: The Williams Family Legacy, a 5,000-square-foot exhibition presenting an intimate, behind-the-scenes portrait of a great American musical dynasty. Family Tradition, which opened in March 2008, is the largest and most popular temporary exhibition in the institution's history. The exhibit, which includes Hank Williams' notebooks and other memorabilia, will close on December 31, 2011.
Created from writings left behind by country music's ''lovesick blues boy,'' The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams premieres the first-ever performances of 12 previously unheard Hank Williams lyric compositions newly set to music by 13 artists whose own sensibilities have been profoundly shaped by Williams.
The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams project began with the idea of finding a well-known artist, one who felt Hank's inspiration and influence, to record an album's worth of the unheard songs. After veteran music industry manager/A&R executive Mary Martin approached Bob Dylan, a natural first choice for the endeavor, the project evolved into a multi-artist tribute providing a variety of sympathetic approaches to this rich mysterious material.
Tracklist:
You've Been Lonesome, Too - Alan Jackson
The Love That Faded - Bob Dylan
How Many Times Have You Broken My Heart? - Norah Jones
You Know That I Know - Jack White
I'm So Happy I Found You - Lucinda Williams
I Hope You Shed a Million Tears - Vince Gill and Rodney Crowell
You're Through Fooling Me - Patty Loveless
You'll Never Again Be Mine - Levon Helm
Blue Is My Heart - Holly Williams
Oh, Mama, Come Home - Jakob Dylan
Angel Mine - Sheryl Crow
The Sermon on the Mount - Merle Haggard
In death, a singer's legacy can easily become the subject of a custody battle. With a talent as nuanced and contrary as Winehouse's, there are many readings of the singer ripe for perpetuation.

Record Store Day is planned for April 21 next year.

the ny times ran an article about a local record shop:
Funkadelic Sold Here, on Vinyl
THE death of the neighborhood record store has been mourned for decades now, but vinyl is alive and well on the southern edge of Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn.
“We wanted to make a place that revives the idea of discovery,” Jeff Ogiba, 30, an owner, said one recent afternoon. “Searching for a record should be like a treasure hunt.
Halifax artist Cathy Busby is giving away her late brother’s record collection as an art project, a fundraiser and a way to let go.
The celebration and vinyl giveaway, Saturday from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the Khyber Centre for the Arts at 1588 Barrington St. in Halifax, is a fundraiser for the AIDS Coalition of Nova Scotia and the not-for-profit Khyber Arts Society.
Tickets are $20 and $15 and include an album and are available (cash only) at FRED, Lost and Found, Venus Envy and Taz Records.
When Busby’s brother, Steve, five years her senior, died in 1983 of AIDS-related illness, she was left his collection of almost 200 records.
"I don’t play vinyl and I’ve been carrying it around for 18 years," says Busby.
Despite rumors brewing all over the industry that QUEEN is prepping a new album featuring unfinished Freddie Mercury tracks, drummer Roger Taylor broke the news that, sadly, they're not.
According to The Pulse Of Radio, Taylor, who along with guitarist, Brian May, keeps the QUEEN brand alive, spoke to Ultimate Classic Rock, and explained, "I've got to tell you, there won't be an album. There's just not enough and the last thing I want to do is have a sort of barrel-scraping exercise. But there's a couple of great tracks that Freddie recorded with Michael Jackson that Brian and I are working on and they are good. So at some point they will surface I think when we feel it's a good moment. I don't really want to ride any sort of wave there. So that's an interesting thing, but that will be probably later some point next year."

The Live Anthology is a multiple-disc set of recordings drawn from thirty years of live performances. The collection brings together material from 1978-2007 culled from hundreds of hours of live concert recordings covering every era of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' tours and represents the best tracks as chosen by producers Tom Petty, Mike Campbell and Ryan Ulyate.
The producers made no fixes or overdubs, letting the newly mixed original recordings showcase the invention, spontaneity, craft, and the musicianship that has made Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers among the most celebrated live performers of their time. Along with powerful interpretations of their own classic hits and originals, The Live Anthology features the band tackling some of their best-loved cover material, from classics to obscure beauties to unexpected adaptations. The theme from Goldfinger, the Zombies' "I Want You Back Again," the Grateful Dead's "Friend of the Devil," early Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well," Booker T. and the MGs' "Green Onions," James Brown's "Good, Good Lovin'" and many more. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers travel wide, paying their musical debts through song and showing just how confidently the band moves across genres and over time.
In 1949, Gene Autry's song "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer," hit the record charts.
In 1957, after his first two releases on Keen Records flopped, Sam Cooke finally had a hit record when "You Send Me" topped the Billboard Pop chart.
In 1957, Danny and the Juniors got their big break when they were asked to fill in for Little Anthony & the Imperials on Dick Clark's American Bandstand. Their performance of At the Hop sent the song to number 1 a month later.
In 1964, in London, Beatles drummer Ringo Starr had his tonsils removed at University College Hospital. He arrived at the hospital the previous day and stayed through December 10. believe it or not, this was BIG news back then :O)
In 1967, the Monkees album, "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and Jones Ltd" went to number one in the US and was certified Gold. It was their fourth straight LP to sell over a million copies, following "The Monkees", "More Of The Monkees" and "Headquarters". Not a bad run, considering The Beatles' classic, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" held the top spot for 15 weeks that year.
In 1967, singer Jimmie Rodgers is found in his car with a fractured skull. Although he alleges that a police officer beat him, no charges are ever filed. Rodgers had three big hits in 1958, "Kisses Sweeter than Wine", "Oh Oh, I'm Falling in Love Again" and "Honeycomb".
In 1969, Cindy Birdsong of the Supremes was kidnapped at knifepoint by a maintenance man who worked in the building she lived in. She later escaped unharmed by jumping out of his car on the San Diego freeway. The kidnapper was arrested in Las Vegas four days later.
In 1970, Eric Burdon launched a bumper sticker campaign aimed at fighting venereal disease. For every donation to the Los Angeles Free Clinic, Burdon sent out a bumper sticker that said Curb the Clap.
"You're So Vain" by Carly Simon was released in 1972.
The song is a critical profile of a self-absorbed lover; Simon asserts "You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you." The subject's identity has been the matter of speculation, fueled by Simon slowly revealing clues as to his identity, quite possibly a gimmick to attempt to hold popularity and awareness. The person Simon is singing about in this song remains a mystery, as she has never made it clear who she wrote it about; rumors include Warren Beatty, Kris Kristofferson, Cat Stevens, and Mick Jagger, all of whom she had affairs with. Carly has been elusive and changed her story a bit when asked the inevitable question about the song (strange considering the album title). In 1974, she told Modern Hi-Fi and Music: "That song is about a lot of people. I mean I can think of a lot of people. The actual examples that I've used in the song are from my imagination, but the stimulus is directly from a couple of different sources. It's not just about one particular person."personally, i give up trying to figure who the song was about, despite all of simon's "hints."
The line "I hear you went up to Saratoga and your horse naturally won," refers to the Saratoga Race Course horse racing season held in late July, August, and early September in Saratoga Springs, New York. The season is frequented by the rich and famous of New York and other cities on the East Coast.
The song is ranked at #72 on Billboard's Greatest Songs of All-Time. "You're So Vain" was voted #216 in RIAA's Songs of the Century. It remains Simon's biggest hit and is considered her signature song.
Also in 1972, The Temptations version of "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" gave the Motown group their fourth US number one song. The Temps' Otis Williams would later say that he considers "Papa" to be the last real classic the group recorded. An earlier rendition by The Undisputed Truth had stalled at number 63.
In 1973, the Who and some companions were jailed overnight for $6,000 worth of destruction they imposed on a hotel room after a show.
In 1975, disco group Silver Convention earns a Gold record for "Fly, Robin, Fly", just as it hit #1 on the Billboard Pop chart.
In 1978, Rod Stewart was at #1 on the U.K. singles chart with “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy,” the singer’s fifth U.K. chart topper. A plagiarism lawsuit by Brazilian musician Jorge Ben Jor confirmed that the song had been derived from his composition “Taj Mahal.” Stewart agreed to donate all his royalties from the song to United Nations Children’s Fund.
In 1979, Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand’s “You Don't Bring Me Flowers” was at #1 on the U.S. singles chart. A radio station engineer had spliced together Neil’s version with Barbra’s version and got such good response, the station added it to their playlist. When Neil Diamond was told about it, he decided to re-record the song with Streisand herself, and within weeks of its release, the single went to #1 in the US and #5 in the UK.
In 1982, folk singer David Blue died of a heart attack at age 41 while jogging in New York’s Washington Square Park. He was a member of Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue during the late ’70s. He wrote “Outlaw Man” covered by the Eagles on their 1973 Desperado album.

In 1997, Third Street Jazz and Rock Holding Corp., a Philadelphia record store, filed a class-action lawsuit against the six major U.S. record distributors. The suit claimed that EMI, Sony, WEA, Universal, Bertelsmann Music Group and Polygram conspired "to raise, fix, and maintain at artificially high and non-competitive levels the wholesale prices" of CDs.
In 2000, thieves broke into the London home Madonna shares with Guy Ritchie. The raiders forced their way in through a basement door then took a set of car keys before loading up Guy Ritchie’s car with some of the couple’s possessions and driving off.

In 2006, David Mount, the drummer with Mud, died in London. They had the 1974 U.K. #1 single “Tiger Feet” (also the best-selling single of 1974). Plus, Mud had 14 other U.K. Top 40 singles.
In 2006, Mariska Veres, vocalist for Shocking Blue on their 1969 hit "Venus", died of cancer at the age of 59. After Shocking Blue had disbanded in 1974, Mariska continued to tour and record as a solo act, with Jazz ensembles and a couple of reunions with her former band mates. if you ever get the chance, listen to some of their old LPs, i love her voice and besides their big hit, they had many, many other wonderful cuts....
In 2007, Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne made more than $800,000 for charity after they sold off some of their possessions from their former US home. Items sold included the family’s custom pool table for $11,250 and a pair of Ozzy’s trademark round glasses went for $5,250. The beaded wire model of the Eiffel Tower that adorned the kitchen fetched $10,000, while skull-adorned trainers worn by Ozzy sold for $2,625.
In 2008, Odetta, the Folk singer whose powerful voice moved audiences and influenced fellow musicians for over 50 years, died of heart disease at the age of 77. Although never a mainstream Pop star, she was nominated for a Grammy Award three times.

Katznelson, the sole San Francisco member of the Idelsohn Society for Musical Preservation, is setting up what he's fairly certain is the first ever pop-up Jewish record store, Tikva Records. It will be open for just a month, from Thursday to Dec. 28, and he expects to spend most of his waking hours there.
All Things Go Launches a New DC-Based Record Label
The founders behind the music blog have announced a new “boutique” label that will release limited-edition seven-inch singles.
By Jason Koebler
With Ian MacKaye’s Dischord Records, the District has one of the most influential do-it-yourself record labels ever created. Now it also has the newest. The four men behind Washington’s All Things Go music blog announced yesterday that they’ve formed a record label called ATG Records. The label is the latest project from the blog, which, taking a page from Brightest Young Things, began promoting concerts and events in spaces such as the Gibson and U Street Music Hall earlier this year.
Their first seven-inch vinyl single is pressed and ready to go, and features “Alive,” two minutes and 45 seconds of offbeat dance punk from Miami artist Nicky Blitz.
Will Suter, who founded the blog along with Adrian Maseda, Stephen Vallimarescu, and Zack Friendly, says the new label will release around ten records per year, and production runs will be kept short—the “Alive” single is limited to only 250 copies.
British rock legends UFO will release their new album, "Seven Deadly", on February 28, 2012 via SPV/Steamhammer. The effort, which was recorded with producer Tommy Newton at his Area 51 studio in Celle, Germany, will be made available as a limited-edition digipack (including two bonus tracks), a double gatefold LP with printed innersleeves and colored vinyl, standard-edition CD and as a digital download.

TOOL Recording New Music
Over the Thanksgiving break, TOOL entered the studio with producer Joe Barresi (ISIS, COHEED & CAMBRIA, PUSCIFER, TOMAHAWK) to begin recording the group's new album. According to a posting on TOOL's official web site, he bandmembers are tracking all songs to tape — using a Studer A827 analog tape recorder — at their own home studio instead of going the digital route.
CALIBAN: New Album Artwork, Track Listing Revealed
German modern metallers CALIBAN will release their eighth studio album, "I Am Nemesis", on February 28, 2012 via Century Media Records. The CD will feature guest appearances by Marcus Bischoff (HEAVEN SHALL BURN) and Mitch Lucker (SUICIDE SILENCE).
After spending 10 months writing new material, the band is very excited to get the record out to fans. "It was important to us to have an elaborate album without any fillers," says lead guitarist Marc Görtz. "Additionally, the sound of the album is the best we've ever had by far: it is heavy and brutal without being chaotic."
BENEATH: 'Enslaved By Fear' Artwork, Track Listing Revealed
Icelandic death metal band BENEATH has revealed the cover art and track listing for its upcoming debut album, "Enslaved By Fear", due out in early 2012 via Unique Leader Records. NEW YORK, Dec. 1, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- As family and friends around the world celebrate Dave Brubeck's 91st birthday on December 6, 2011, attention is also drawn to notable anniversaries of key albums in the Columbia Records discography of the Dave Brubeck Quartet. These include the 55th anniversary of their landmark 1956 album Jazz Impressions Of The U.S.A., the 50th anniversary of the 1961 LP Time Further Out, and the 45th anniversary of Time In, their 1966 finale to the signature series that started with the all-time classic, RIAA® certified double-platinum Time Out in 1959.
Those four studio albums, alongside the 15 other Columbia studio recordings that the Quartet released between 1955 and 1967, are brought together for the first time in THE DAVE BRUBECK QUARTET – THE COMPLETE COLUMBIA STUDIO ALBUMS COLLECTION. The deluxe 19-CD box set is available now for pre-order at Sony Music's retail website – http://www.myplaydirect.com/dave-brubeck – in advance of the December 6th (Brubeck's birthday!) release date. The box set is released by Columbia/Legacy, a division of SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT.
The 19 titles in THE DAVE BRUBECK QUARTET – THE COMPLETE COLUMBIA STUDIO ALBUMS COLLECTION are as follows:
1. Brubeck Time (1955) 2. Jazz Impressions Of The U.S.A. (1956, first time on CD in U.S.) 3. Jazz Impressions Of Eurasia (1958, first time on CD in U.S.) 4. Dave Digs Disney (1957) 5. Gone With The Wind (1959, first time on CD in U.S.) 6. Time Out! (1959) 7. Southern Scene (1960, first time on CD in U.S.) 8. Bernstein Plays Brubeck Plays Bernstein (1961) 9. Time Further Out (1961) 10. Countdown: Time In Outer Space (1962) 11. Bossa Nova U.S.A. (1963, first time on CD in U.S.) 12. Brandenburg Gate: Revisited (1963) 13. Time Changes (1964) 14. Jazz Impressions Of Japan (1964) 15. Jazz Impressions Of New York (1965, first time on CD in U.S.) 16. Angel Eyes (1965, first time on CD in U.S.) 17. My Favorite Things (1966, first time on CD in U.S.) 18. Time In (1966) 19. Plays Cole Porter - Anything Goes! (1967, first time on CD in U.S.)
(This discography, starting with 1959's Gone With The Wind, also represents the total Columbia studio output of the classic longtime lineup of the Dave Brubeck Quartet that began in '58 – Brubeck on piano, Paul Desmond on alto saxophone, bassist Eugene Wright, and drummer Joe Morello.)
THE DAVE BRUBECK QUARTET – THE COMPLETE COLUMBIA STUDIO ALBUMS COLLECTION features each of the 19 albums in a replica mini-LP sleeve which reproduces that LP's original front and back cover artwork. Where applicable, the albums in each box include the bonus tracks that have been released on the expanded CD editions over the years.
As noted above, nine of the titles in THE DAVE BRUBECK QUARTET – THE COMPLETE COLUMBIA STUDIO ALBUMS COLLECTION are making their debut appearance on CD in the U.S. with this box set.
The arrival of THE DAVE BRUBECK QUARTET – THE COMPLETE COLUMBIA STUDIO ALBUMS COLLECTION follows Columbia/Legacy's November 1st debut release of the double-CD, Their Last Time Out (subtitle: The Unreleased Live Concert – December 26, 1967). Recorded in Pittsburgh, the night after Christmas, the concert reflected Brubeck's decision to disband the Quartet at the end of 1967, their tenth and final year together. The concert covered virtually every phase of the Quartet's tenure, from blues ("St. Louis Blues") and standards ("Swanee River," "These Foolish Things," "Take The 'A' Train," "Someday My Prince Will Come," "I'm In A Dancing Mood," "You Go To My Head"), to the Latin flavor of which they were so fond ("Cielito Lindo," "La Paloma Azul"). In true democratic fashion there is also one original composition by each musician: Brubeck's "Three To Get Ready" (listen for Desmond's "12 Days Of Christmas" riff), Wright's "Set My People Free," Morello's "For Drummers Only," and of course, Desmond's "Take Five."
The 16 core years that Dave Brubeck spent at Columbia Records (from 1954 to 1970), saw this complex musician and compassionate bandleader develop into a multi-talented composer, arranger, producer, orchestrator, and ultimately a father figure for at least three generations of jazz players.
The Dave Brubeck Quartet, in its early lineup (with alto saxophonist Paul Desmond, drummer Joe Dodge, and a succession of bassists) was signed to Columbia in 1953, by the renowned George Avakian. He followed the pianist's early format (of live concert recordings on Fantasy) and also recorded him live for his Columbia debut, Jazz Goes To College.
THE DAVE BRUBECK QUARTET – THE COMPLETE COLUMBIA STUDIO ALBUMS COLLECTION focuses on the Quartet's studio LPs, which actually began with their second album, Brubeck Time (1954). The so-called 'classic' Dave Brubeck Quartet took shape with the entrance of drummer Joe Morello in 1956 and bassist Eugene Wright in 1958. They staked their claim to jazz immortality in 1959 with the Time Out album, the first million-selling LP in jazz history, featuring the single that changed all the rules, "Take Five" b/w "Blue Rondo A La Turk."
Included with this set is Brandenburg Gate, Revisited which features a 10-part, 20-minute work for strings arranged and conducted by Howard Brubeck on a theme by Dave Brubeck that was first heard on Jazz Impressions Of Eurasia (1958). In addition to Eurasia, all the other albums in the Quartet's "Jazz Impressions" series are represented in this collection: Jazz Impressions Of The USA (1957), Jazz Impressions of Japan (1964), and Jazz Impressions of New York (1965).
The Quartet was disbanded in 1967, the year of their final Columbia studio LP, The Dave Brubeck Quartet Plays Cole Porter - Anything Goes!, a swingin' affair.

The Who ‘Quadrophenia’ Deluxe Edition – Album Review
by: Karen 'Gilly' Laney
The new re-issue of the Who’s ‘Quadrophenia’ takes us back to mid 1973, when the Who were unofficially dubbed the worlds greatest live rock ‘n’ roll band and had several successful recordings under their belt including ‘Tommy’ and Who’s Next.’
Come October and their next triumph, in which songwriter Pete Townshend introduced us to Jimmy, the tragic hero of the band’s latest rock opera.
Jimmy is a teenager in England whose dad labels him a “schizophrenic” and his Mum, well, she just thinks he’s “nutty.” Youthful angst is at its peak as Jimmy desperately tries to fit in while his moods change as often as the weather.
In 1957, Buddy Holly and the Crickets, Sam Cooke, and the Rays made their national television debuts on CBS-TV's "The Ed Sullivan Show," performing their hits "Peggy Sue" and "That'll Be The Day," "You Send Me," and "Silhouettes," respectively.
In 1958, Ricky Nelson was the first rock 'n' roll artist to be pictured on the cover of LIFE magazine.
Also in 1958, the Phil Spector written "To Know Him Is To Love Him" was the number one song in the US for The Teddy Bears. The trio consisted of Spector along with two friends, Marshall Leib and Annette Kleinbard.
In 1960, a San Diego, California quintet called Rosie And The Originals reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 with a loosely recorded ballad called "Angel Baby". Written by the group's 14 year old singer, Rosie Hamlin, the song held the position for six weeks and stayed on the chart for three months. still one of my favorite songs of all time, just gives me chills for some reason (i love the old doo wop!)
In 1964, in Hollywood, Buck Owens recorded his compositions "Cryin' Time," later a hit for Ray Charles, and "I've Got A Tiger By The Tail," which became Owens' signature song. The latter spent five weeks at #1 on the Billboard magazine Hot Country Singles chart and was his highest-charting entry on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #25.
In 1966, Tom Jones' cover version of Porter Wagoner's "Green, Green Grass of Home" tops the UK charts for the first of a seven week stay. It will become his biggest hit, selling over 1.2 million copies in Britain alone. The record reached #11 in the US.
In 1968, Janis Joplin made her final appearance with Big Brother & the Holding Company.
In 1972, Martha & the Vandellas gave their farewell performance in Detroit, MI.
In 1973, "Top Of The World" becomes The Carpenters' second number one hit on the Billboard Pop Chart. It made #5 in the UK. An earlier version by Lynn Anderson had already topped the US Country chart.
In 1976, the Sex Pistols, who have just released their first single, "Anarchy in the UK", appear on British TV's Today Show as a last-minute replacement for Queen. After interviewer Bill Grundy asks them about their "nasty reputation", bass player Glenn Matlock utters a four letter word on the air. In the resulting uproar, The Sex Pistols are banned from appearing in all but five cities that were booked for their first UK tour. By next month, no club or concert hall in Great Britain will book the group.
In 1983, Neil Young was sued by Geffen Records who said he had not delivered a commercial enough album (“not commercial in nature and musically uncharacteristic of his previous albums”).
In 1986, R&B singer (Working In A Coal Mine, Ya Ya) Lee Dorsey died of emphysema at age 61.
In 1987, a Kentucky teacher lost her appeal in the US Supreme Court over her dismissal for showing Pink Floyd's film 'The Wall' to her class. The court decided that the film, with its bad language and sexual content, was not suitable for minors.
In 1995, an auction of Frank Sinatra's possessions earned him $2,072,000.
In 1997, Kenny G set a new world record when he sustained a note on his saxophone for 45 minutes and 47 seconds using a technique that allows him to blow and breathe at the same time. The record has since been broken by Geovanny Escalante, who was able to hold a note for 1 hour, 30 minutes and 45 seconds.
In 1997, singer/keyboardist (When I Die) William "Smitty" Smith of the band Motherlode suffered a fatal heart attack at the age of 53.
In 1997, jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli died at the age of 89.
In 1999, the 67th lighting of the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center draws an unbelievable 250,000 people, most of which wanting to see performances by ‘N Sync, Britney Spears, Enrique Iglesias, and Rosemary Clooney.
birthdays today include (among others): Billy Paul (77), Brad Delson (Linkin Park) (34), John Densmore (Doors) (67), Gilbert O'Sullivan (65), Greg Upchurch (3 Doors Down) (40) and Eric Bloom (Blue Oyster Cult) (67)
