Bananas in St. Petersburg, the World's Largest Collection of Vinyl Records

Florida has at least four destinations for vinyl collectors, who are driving a remarkable resurgence in sales.

St. Petersburg's original Bananas Music store isn't just for the casual music browser.

Earlier this year, a Taiwanese dealer came into the quaint old shop and bought five pallets of vinyl records. That's about 5,300 records.

Buyers from Rio de Janiero, England, Israel, Estonia and places shop owners Doug and Michelle Allen barely knew existed have all drooled over Bananas' vinyl selection.

Exclusive Beatles 'Yellow Submarine' Book Available Free On Apple's iBookstore Starting Today

LONDON, England, Dec. 9, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Following the recent first anniversary of The Beatles catalog's worldwide digital exclusivity on the iTunes Store® (www.iTunes.com), an exclusive Beatles 'Yellow Submarine' book that lets readers tap their iPad, iPhone and iPod touch to immerse themselves in the legendary film's colorful sights and sounds is available for free download on Apple's iBookstore worldwide starting today. The iBookstore is available via the free iBooks App for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, and at www.iTunes.com/iBookstore.

The iBookstore's exclusive 'Yellow Submarine' book takes the reader on a kaleidoscopic, music-filled journey with The Beatles to an underwater dreamland featuring animated illustrations and text from the 2004 book, 14 full-color video clips from the original 1968 film, audio clips of classic Beatles hits and Sir George Martin's original score, original dialogue from the film, "read aloud" functionality to follow along as actor Dean Lennox Kelly narrates, as well as interactive features that let you tap the story's wild array of butterflies, starfish and sea monsters to make them come alive. A video trailer for the book is available for free streaming starting today at www.iTunes.com/TheBeatles.

The vibrantly illustrated book was designed by Fiona Andreanelli using Heinz Edelmann's original artwork from the film, and its story has been adapted by Charlie Gardner from the film's original screenplay, co-written by Lee Minoff, Al Brodax, Jack Mendelsohn and Eric Segal.

Inspired by The Beatles' song of the same name, 'Yellow Submarine' dives 80,000 leagues beneath the sea to Pepperland, a musical paradise where Sergeant Pepper's band plays on until the music-hating Blue Meanies invade, sealing the band inside a music-proof bubble and leaving it a silent wasteland. But Old Fred, captain of the Yellow Submarine, escapes to Liverpool and persuades Ringo - with a little help from his friends John, Paul and George - to join him on a magical adventure to return music and love to Pepperland.

Since first launching worldwide on November 16, 2010, The Beatles' exclusive digital releases on iTunes now include the band's 13 legendary remastered studio albums, a special digital edition of the GRAMMY®-winning 'Beatles Stereo Box Set,' the two-volume 'Past Masters' compilation, the classic '1962-1966' ('Red') and '1967-1970' ('Blue') collections, the GRAMMY-winning 'LOVE' album and 'All Together Now,' the feature-length documentary about the making of The Beatles LOVE by Cirque du Soleil®, the band's remastered 'Anthology' music collections, and the record-breaking '1' hits collection.

The Beatles have now sold over ten million songs and over 1.8 million albums on the iTunes Store worldwide.

and in america's heartland, vinyl is all the rage:

Local bands capitalize on vinyl album boom

Text and Video by Brittany McNeal, NewsNetNebraska

Because of technological advances, libraries of music can now be stored in a device smaller than a deck of cards.

Although digital music has flourished, music sales have declined — except for vinyl.

Clearly, what was old is new again.

As of 2011, alternative and independent artists and labels are the main distributors of vinyl records. Local bands have gotten in on the trend.

in my inbox today....i rarely feature digital downloads on the blog, however, i like the video and the song, let me know what you think!

The King Blues - Does Anybody Care About Us?

Released on Feb 12th, 2012

Digital Download

Is anybody gonna fight back?

'Does Anybody Care About Us?' is the brand new single from The King Blues, the fourth taken from their critically acclaimed 2011 album, 'Punk & Poetry'. A clear statement of intent as always from The King Blues, aggressively melodic, and with lyrics with a conscience, their latest offering continues to prove yet again this really is a band with something to say. Shot on a frosty Manchester morning, the band invited fans to become a part of the video, playing the subjects that are uncompromisingly thrown on to a pile of those left behind by recent heavy-handed coalition government policy.

"There's no fucking future for anyone but the privileged anymore, education needs to be for everyone, we need jobs, houses, and all they want us to do is pay our taxes, shut the fuck up and gratefully eat X-Factor. It makes me sick to my gut. Banker bonuses and politicians claiming thousands for their fucking duck ponds while they sweep the homeless off the streets and hose down where they're sleeping, taking away benefits while two and a half million people are unemployed, leaving empty houses to rot and trying to outlaw squatting during a homeless crisis. There's a battle going on and we're part of it whether we like it or not. Cameron says, 'in this together', easy to say if you're sitting on £30,000,000! He has no idea what life is like for the people he condemns, for the people he makes it most difficult for. He's a fucking scumbag and I've had enough of it, I know I ain't the only one either. I look around and I see resistance on every level. Call us what you like, striking workers, protesting students, rioting kids, the 99%, we are who we are, a product of a broken Britain being torn apart and yes, we are fucking angry - is anybody gonna fight back?" - Jonny 'Itch' Fox

Due for release on February 12th on digital download, the single will also include a live accapella version of 'Five Bottles of Shampoo' taken from the band's recent triumphant performance at The Roundhouse, London - their biggest headline show to-date, as a b-side. Fans can also look forward to re-living the rest of that electric night in Camden as the whole gig looks set to become part of a forthcoming limited edition King Blues DVD.

in music history for december 9th:

In 1955, Elvis Presley did two shows in Swifton, Arkansas: in the Swifton High School gymnasium, then at the B&I Club. He introduced his new song "Heartbreak Hotel," claiming "It's gonna be my first hit."

In 1957, Danny & the Junior's "At the Hop" was picked up by ABC-Paramount Records based on the strength and reaction to the group's performance on American Bandstand.

In 1961, the Beatles played at the Palais Ballroom in Aldershot to a crowd of just 18 people. The date had not been advertised, owing to the local newspaper’s refusal to accept the promoter’s check. After the show The Beatles became rowdy, getting themselves ordered out of town by the local police.

In 1961, the Tokens' "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" topped the Cashbox Magazine Best Sellers Chart for the first of a four week run.

In 1962, the Four Seasons sang their current hit, "Big Girls Don't Cry" on The Ed Sullivan Show.

In 1962, Brian Epstein took George Martin to the Cavern Club in Liverpool to see the Beatles.

Also in 1962, the first Supremes album, "Meet the Supremes," was released. The LP contained their first US Top 40 hit, "When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes".

On December 9, 1967, in New Haven, Connecticut, prior to a Doors concert at the New Haven Arena, a policeman found singer Jim Morrison making out with an 18 year-old girl in a backstage shower and, after an argument, the policeman sprayed mace in Morrison's face. Once on stage, Morrison told the audience what had transpired and he began taunting the police, who eventually dragged him off the stage and arrested him for breach of the peace and resisting arrest. The crowd rioted and left the venue in disarray. Many fans were taken into custody. Later, more than 100 protestors gathered at the police station to demonstrate, resulting in even more arrests.

In 1968, the Supremes' and the Temptations' "TCB (Takin' Care of Business") special aired on NBC-TV.

In 1970, Helen Reddy became Australia's first female artist to have a number one record on the US chart when "I Am Woman" reached the top of the Billboard hit parade. Surprisingly, the song didn't chart at all in the UK. Reddy would achieve two more US number one singles over the next couple of years with, "Delta Dawn" and "Angie Baby".

In 1972, the Moody Blues hit number one on the US album charts for the first time with "Seventh Sojourn". It will be their last album of new material for more than five years as the group's members split to record and to tour as solo artists.

In 1972, "Tommy" was performed at London's Rainbow Theatre. The recording of the event was released the next year.

In 1974 - George Harrison released his first album on his Dark Horse label, entitled "Dark Horse."

In 1978, Chic started a seven-week run at #1 on the US singles chart with “Le Freak,” a #7 hit in the U.K.

Also in 1978, "Soul Man," John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd's version, was released under the name, "The Blues Brothers." Belushi and Ackroyd would reach #14 in the US, while the original had topped out at #2.

In 1980, Yoko Ono issued a statement to the press that read: "There is no funeral for John. John loved and prayed for the human race. Please do the same for him. Love, Yoko and Sean." She also pleaded with chanting and singing mourners outside The Dakota to re-convene in Central Park the following Sunday for ten minutes of silent prayer. Over 225,000 did.

In 1981, Sonny Til, the lead singer of the '50's Doo Wop group, The Orioles, died of a heart attack. He was 56.

In 1984, the Jacksons played their last show together in Los Angeles, CA.

In 1988, according to a poll released in the US, the music of Neil Diamond was favored as the best background music during sex. Beethoven was the second choice and Luther Vandross was voted third. What, no Ozzie?

In 1989, Billy Joel started a two week run at #1 on the Billboard Pop chart with "We Didn't Start The Fire". The song, in which Joel sings about headlining events that have occurred during his lifetime, was a #7 hit in the UK.

In 1992, Bill Wyman left the Rolling Stones after over 30 years with the group.

In 1995, "Free as a Bird," debuted on a six-hour ABC documentary on the Beatles. Even though they had disbanded 25 years earlier, the Beatles had the number one album in the US when "Anthology" hit the top for the first of three weeks. It would go on to sell over 4 million copies and included rare Beatle recordings in the form of demos, alternate takes, live versions and previously unreleased material.

In 1996, singer (I Know What Boys Like, Christmas Wrappings) Patty Donahue, lead vocalist of the Waitresses, died of lung cancer at age 40.

In 2000, Peter Yarrow has his guitar lost by Delta Airlines on a flight from Ft. Lauderdale, FL to Washington, D.C. He had used the Larrivee guitar on every Peter, Paul and Mary album and in every concert since 1973.

In 2002, Paul McCartney released his live album, "Back In The U.S." Against the wishes of Yoko Ono, John Lennon's widow, the nineteen Beatles songs included on the two-disc set were credited to "Paul McCartney and John Lennon" rather than the usual "Lennon-McCartney."

In 2002, Pat Boone returned to Billboard's Hot 100 after a 40 year absence. His new song, "Under God", was written in response to a lawsuit filed in San Francisco by an agnostic who claimed his daughter's constitutional rights were violated by having to say the words "under God" when her school recites the Pledge of Allegiance. The record briefly rose to number 25, ahead of songs by the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Jay-Z. Boone's last Top 40 hit was "Speedy Gonzalez", which made it to number 6 in 1962.

In 2003, a grand jury in Rhode Island indicts the two owners of the club where 100 people were killed during a Great White concert, along with the group's road manager.

In 2005, a man charged with stealing more than $300,000 worth of Elvis Presley's jewelry from the Elvis-A-Rama museum appeared in a Las Vegas court. 30 year old Eliab Aguilar was arrested on November 3rd after police said he approached a retired Elvis impersonator and offered to sell him several items including Presley's 1953 class ring from Humes High School worth $32,000, a 41 carat ruby and diamond ring worth $77,000 and a gold-plated Smith & Wesson .38 special.

In 2005, Mike Botts, drummer for the Soft Rock band Bread, passed away in Burbank, California, one day after his 61st birthday, having suffered from colon cancer.

In 2006, singer (Dance With Me Henry, Tweedle Dee, Kiss Of Fire) Georgia Gibbs died of complications from leukemia at the age of 87.

In 2006, Fred Marsden, the drummer for the Merseybeat band Gerry and the Pacemakers, died of cancer at the age of 66. The group disbanded in 1967. Gerry Marsden reformed the Pacemakers in 1973 but without Fred, who had given up the music business to be a telephone operator and later established The Pacemaker Driving School.

In 2010, jazz saxophonist/flutist/composer James Moody died of pancreatic cancer at age 85.

Looney Tunes' three decades of vinyl bliss

Right round baby right round

By EUGENIA WILLIAMSON

Among the faded LP sleeves crowding the Boylston-facing windows of Looney Tunes Records is a carefully hand-lettered sign written in black marker: "33 1/3 YEAR BIRTHDAY SALE. EVERY ITEM 33 1/3 % OFF LIST PRICE."

Inside, the narrow, high-ceilinged space — once the site of a dental-supply outlet — is chockablock with used CDs, DVDs, and row upon row of vinyl. Browsers — all men, whenever I've visited — thumb through cascades of cardboard sleeves while navigating the stacks of cardboard boxes wedged underneath the shelves.

"I have something of a record problem," owner Pat McGrath tells me over iced coffee.

vinyl in the heartland doing well at one of america's oldest record stores:

Home of the records

Everything from the vinyl records lining the shelves to the historical records dating back to Kirksville's founding, are crammed into the walls of Rinehart's Music & Video, which claims to be America's oldest operating record store.

The storefront, located on South Franklin Street, is home to one of 12 Rinehart businesses, which have been in the Rinehart family since their beginnings as a news corporation in 1861, according to the Adair County Historical Society. Current owner Karl Hildebrand, a cousin of the Rineharts, said these family businesses have been able to survive because of their ability to adapt and to plan for the future.

Zombi Members 'Brainstorm' on Split LP

Pittsburgh's prog duo Zombi are releasing a split LP called 'Brainstorm' in January via Temporary Residence Ltd. A press release describes it as "an alternate reality version of OutKast's Speakerboxxx/The Love Below -- a world where instead of beautiful women, expensive clothes and futuristic cars, we get transcendent aliens, expensive synthesizers, and futuristic cars."

Side A of this vinyl release has Zombi's Steve Moore exploring with freaky synthscapes in the vein of John Carpenter and Vangelis over four tracks. Then, on the flip, Majeure (born A.E. Paterra) drops a 20-minute jam that runs the gamut from strict ambience to straight up prog-rockin'.

In 1961, the Beach Boys first recording, "Surfin'", was released on Candis Records, a small L.A. based company. The song was written by Brian Wilson and his cousin Mike Love and recorded with Brian's brothers, Carl and Dennis and their friend Alan Jardine. Carl played acoustic guitar, Al played double bass and Brian kept time on a garbage can.

It was released as the first Beach Boys single (with "Luau" on the B-side) in November 1961 on Candix Records and it later appeared on the 1962 album Surfin' Safari. The Beach Boys were trying to think of something original and creative that they could write a song about. Brian Wilson remembers that "One day, my brother Dennis came home from the beach and said, 'Hey, surfing's getting really big. You guys ought to write a song about it."

The song features Mike Love on lead vocals with Carl Wilson on backing vocals and guitar, Al Jardine on backing vocals and stand-up bass, Brian Wilson on backing vocals and percussion and Dennis Wilson on backing vocals. The single peaked at number 75 in the US; it was never released in the UK.

Dennis Wilson remembers "the first time we ever heard our record played [on the radio], We [Carl, Brian, Dennis and David Marks] were all on Hawthorne Boulevard in Brian's 1957 Ford...they said, 'Here's a group from Hawthorne, California, The Beach Boys, with their song, 'Surfin''. It was a contest; they played three songs and the one that got the most requests over the phone was the one they would add to the playlist. We were screamin' in the street, and knockin' on everybody's door, 'We got a record on the radio!'...That was the biggest high ever. Nothing will ever top the expression on Brian's face. Ever...THAT is the all-time moment."

Brian Wilson remembers that "I began noodling around the piano singing 'surfin', surfin', surfin''. It sounded stupid. But then Mike [Love] sang 'ba-ba-dippity-dippity-ba-ba.' He was fooling around, trying to spark a new idea with the same bass sounds he'd sung countless times before. From some reason, though, this time when he sang I pounded out a few chords to accompany him and then he took up the chant I'd been singing, 'surfin', surfin''." Brian continues that "twenty seconds later, I had the opening for the song that would become the Beach Boys' first hit single. A couple of hours later, I finished the song and called it 'Surfin''."

In 1962, Alan Freed testified at his payola trial in New York that he received $2,000 in 1958 from Cognat Distributors for a promise to play their records on his New York radio show. He also accepted a similar deal from Superior Records for $700. He pleads guilty and is fined $300 and given six months probation. Dick Clark was also questioned, but is cleared of all charges.

In 1963, Frank Sinatra Jr. was kidnapped at gunpoint from a hotel in Lake Tahoe. He was released two days later after his father paid out the $240,000 ransom demanded by the kidnappers, who were later captured, and sentenced to long prison terms. In order to communicate with the kidnappers via a payphone the senior Sinatra carried a roll of dimes with him throughout this ordeal, which became a lifetime habit, he is said to have been buried with a roll of dimes.

In 1980, just two months after his 40th birthday, John Lennon was murdered by Mark David Chapman, outside his home at the Dakota Apartment building on the northwestern corner of 72nd Street and Central Park West in New York. After approaching the former Beatle and calling his name, Chapman dropped into a combat stance and shot John in his chest, back and left arm. Lennon staggered into the porters' vestibule in a desperate attempt to get upstairs to see his son, Sean. As he collapsed, John was comforted by porter Jay Hastings, who covered him with his jacket and gently removed his glasses. Police were quickly summoned and took John to Roosevelt Hospital on West Fifty-ninth St. Although doctors did everything they could to save him, John Lennon was pronounced dead at 11:07 PM. A sobbing Yoko cried "Oh no, no, no, no... tell me it's not true," and was led away in shock.

After the shooting, the 24-year-old Chapman remained at the scene, took out his copy of The Catcher in the Rye and read it until the police arrived. He was arrested without incident.

Much of America learned of the tragedy from ABC-TV, which was in the midst of airing an NFL game between the Miami Dolphins and the New England Patriots on Monday Night Football. Announcer Howard Cosell, who had interviewed Lennon years earlier, announced the news of the murder: "This, we have to say it, is just a football game, no matter who wins or loses. An unspeakable tragedy, confirmed to us by ABC News in New York City. John Lennon, outside of his apartment building on the West Side of New York City, the most famous perhaps of all of The Beatles, shot twice in the back, rushed to Roosevelt Hospital, dead on arrival."

Lennon's killer remains in prison, being denied parole in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010.

In 2011, Lennon’s music lives on - stronger and more meaningful than ever.

Ask Mr, Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF DECEMBER 5, 2011

DEAR JERRY: In the 1950s and '60s, I usually bought my favorite records as soon as I became aware of them. As a result, I have a number of hit songs on independent labels, that made it big after being picked up by a bigger company.

Will you list some examples of generally unknown first labels and the ones on which they sold well nationally, with values?
—Kim Zumwalt, Boise, Idaho

DEAR KIM: You got it! By setting the minimum value for first label discs at $100 leaves us with a manageable total of about 80 entries. Otherwise, there are too many to complete by my deadline.

Not included are labels having original versions that are not the same recording as the hit. For example, “Only You,” by the Platters, on Federal is not the same track as the Mercury hit, and does not qualify here.

Alphabetically by artist, here is the title, year, first issue, and value, followed by the commercial first pressing 45 for the hit label:

Vinyl records making a comeback

Bad Kitty Vintage Vinyl opens

By Lainie Steelman The McDonough County Voice

Macomb, Ill. - Long before the digital age and the iPod, buying music was a tangible and visual experience: flipping through stacks of vinyl LPs, admiring the art on an album cover, placing a record on a turntable. The old-fashioned record store also provided a place for music fans to gather, converse and listen together.

John Gorlewski, of Macomb, is looking to revive the experience of buying a vinyl record and on Nov. 26 he opened Bad Kitty Vintage Vinyl at 233 E. Carroll St.

A collector and online dealer of vinyl records for the past 10 years, Gorlewski, who has a day job at Western Illinois University’s admissions office, moved to Macomb several years ago from Chicago.

Store Remains One of North Texas Last Vinyl Record Retailers

Before iTunes, if you wanted to get your hands on Lady Gaga’s latest single, you would’ve had to actually go to the store and buy it.

Those days may be over, but one Dallas institution is refusing to close its doors.

Bills Records first opened a super store in North Dallas back in 1981. They’ve been in a smaller location on South Lamar for the past 4.5 years. Bill says his music sale are horrible, but he’s still holding on.

Rush Rush to Fix Production Flaws

Fans gobbled up the release of three Rush box sets, but it turns out that there is a problem with discs in both the Sector 1 and Sector 2 boxes. Issued just last month, the ‘Sector’ series contains remastered editions of the band’s entire Mercury Records catalog. Sector 1 features the band’s first 4 studio albums as well as the classic live recording ‘All The World’s A Stage’. Sector 2 covers all the ground from 1977 through 1981, including the landmark breakthrough ‘Moving Pictures’, while Sector 3 wraps things up from ‘Signals’ up through their 3rd live release,’A Show Of Hands.'

A statement issued on the band’s website states:

“We are aware of some slight technical issues surrounding the CD of ‘Fly By Night’ inside the Sector 1 box set release and the DVD for ‘A Farewell To Kings’ inside the Sector 2 box set that some fans are experiencing. It stems from a production flaw and it is currently being addressed. As soon as production is completed a formal announcement of how to replace the discs will follow shortly. Please be aware that there may be a time delay in shipping and receiving the disc and we sincerely apologize for this inconvenience – Geddy, Alex & Neil”

Legendary Music Impresario and Star Maker DON KIRSHNER Will Be Inducted Into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2012

LAS VEGAS, Dec. 7, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Legendary and iconic music impresario Don Kirshner, who passed away on January 17, 2011, was posthumously selected today for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Don Kirshner will receive The Ahmet Ertegun Award, a non-performer classification that in the past has been awarded to Clive Davis, Berry Gordy Jr. and David Geffen.

Kirshner was the Chief Creative Officer at ROCKRENA, the parent company of rockcityclub.com at the time of his death, a company he helped shape with noted entrepreneur and promoter Jack Wishna and the legendary performer Michael Jackson.

Jack Wishna, CEO of Rockrena, called Kirshner "one of Rock and Roll's greatest treasures" and noted that he was a "giant among his contemporaries, unwavering in his commitment to talent and excellence."

"While we will miss him and his quick wit and infectious laugh, his footprint on rockcityclub.com and the world of music will remain forever. We are so happy for his wife Sheila and his family that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame recognizes our friend and partner with this incredible honor," Wishna added

A widely respected music icon, Don Kirshner is synonymous with Rock and Roll, having started the careers of more Rock and Roll bands and vocalists then anyone on the planet. Don Kirshner was named by Time Magazine "The Man With The Golden Ear."

Don Kirshner promoted, discovered, or produced Olivia Newton-John, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Phil Collins, Abba, Heart, Queen, Kiss, Cher, Elton John, AC/DC, Judas Priest, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, The Beach Boys, Fleetwood Mac, Barry Manilow, Michael Jackson, The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Rod Stewart, Tina Turner, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie and The Who.

"Don Kirshner's Rock Concert" ran for ten years on ABC and featured for the first time artists that Kirshner helped launch, such as Prince, Ozzy Osbourne, Lionel Richie and The Eagles, among others. "Perhaps Kirshner's most formidable asset was a discerning eye and ear for talent," added Ron Dante, an early protege of Kirshner and currently Executive Director, Talent Acquisition for rockcityclub.com.

Two Undiscovered Christmas Songs Recorded in 1981 by the Late Famed Clarence Clemons Arrive Just in Time for the 2011 Holiday Season

"I wanted an electric train for Christmas but I got the saxophone instead" -- Clarence Clemons

NEW YORK, Dec. 7, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Two newly discovered Christmas songs recorded in 1981 by the late great saxophonist Clarence Clemons have arrived just in time for the holidays. The special CD entitled There's Still Christmas features Clarence singing tenderhearted lead vocals on the poignant title track "There's Still Christmas" (co-written by Dennis Bourke and the late Stevie Betts), while the second track showcases the Big Man on sax on the holiday classic "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts)." There's Still Christmas (Oceangate Records) is currently available on iTunes, Amazon.com and all premium online download destinations as well as through the websites https://bigmanchristmassong.com/ or http://www.backstreets.com.

Producers Dennis Bourke and Jim Nuzzo helmed the recording session that produced the two never-before-released tracks. Armed with the support of the Clarence Clemons Trust and his son Clarence Clemons III (a.k.a. Nick Clemons), the producers are honored to be a part of this celebrated legacy with this unique release. Bourke and Nuzzo recall, "We were blessed to have the opportunity to share some time with Clarence and record these marvelous Christmas tunes. He poured himself into the project, wearing Santa gear and capturing the essence of the season.

"With his passing in June 2011, we were all saddened to lose this American rock icon. One of the beauties of recorded music is its eternal power to play on long after the artist is physically gone. Clarence has a parting Christmas gift to us all with these soon-to-be holiday classics. Open up your hearts and listen to the Big Man say Merry Christmas to the world."

The Nick Clemons Band recently headlined the sold-out "Clarence Clemons Christmas Songs" CD release party held at the Wonder Bar in Asbury Park on November 18, and will make two special appearances at the legendary Stone Pony, with a Christmas concert on Friday, Dec. 23, and the "Light Of Day" tribute concert for the "Asbury Angels" honoring the musicians and other members of the Asbury Park music scene who have passed on in recent years on Friday, January 13. Honorees include Clarence Clemons, Danny Federici, Kevin Kavanaugh, Donnie Bertleson and John Luraschi.

Best known for his contributions to Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Clarence Clemons recorded with many other artists including Jackson Browne, Aretha Franklin and most recently Lady Gaga and released a number of solo musical projects over his illustrious career.

in music history for december 7th:

In 1842, the New York Philharmonic gave its first concert.

In 1954, Marty Robbins becomes the first major artist to cover an Elvis Presley tune when he records the Arthur Crudup composition "That's All Right" for Columbia Records. Robbins' effort will pay off in a Top Ten hit on the Billboard Country chart.

In 1962, the Rolling Stones auditioned bassists including Bill Wyman

In 1963, the Beatles’ second album With the Beatles started a 21-week run at #1 on the UK album chart. It replaced their first album 'Please Please Me,' which had been at the top of the charts since its release 30 weeks previously.

In 1963, "Dominique" by The Singing Nun was the number one record in North America, edging out The Kingsmen's "Louie, Louie". The song would eventually sell over 1.5 million copies and win a Grammy Award for the year's best Gospel song. Her given name was Jeanine Deckers and she would leave the convent in 1967 before taking her final vows, partly to pursue a recording career, but never repeated her earlier success. In 1985, the center for autistic children in Belgium that she helped to found had closed due to lack of funds. In despair over this failure, the 51 year old Deckers and her friend Annie Pescher committed suicide.

Also in 1963, the Beatles appear on a UK show called Juke Box Jury, where host David Jacobs presided over a panel of four celebrities who rendered their judgments on the latest Pop record releases. John, Paul, Ringo and George turned thumbs down on Bobby Vinton's "There, I've Said It Again", which was currently number one in the US. They predicted that Elvis Presley's "Kiss Me Quick" would be a hit, but it stalled at #34 in America the following summer.

In 1963, the Murmaids, an Los Angeles teenage trio consisting of sisters Carol and Terry Fischer along with Sally Gordon, enter the Billboard chart with "Popsicles and Icicles", which will rise to #3.

In 1967, Otis Redding went into the studio to record “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay.” The song went on to be his biggest hit. Redding didn’t see its release; he was killed three days later in a plane crash.

In 1967, the Beatles' Apple boutique opened in London. It closed seven months later and all the goods were given away free to passers by.

In 1968, Eric Burdon announced he would break-up the Animals after a December 22 concert at Newcastle City Hall. His intention was to go to California and start an acting career.

In 1968, although its real name is "The Beatles", the LP that fans call "The White Album" tops the UK chart. The effort marks the first time that John, Paul, Ringo and George worked separately on different tracks.

In 1971, Paul McCartney's new band, Wings, released their first album 'Wild Life.'

In 1974, Carl Douglas' "Kung Fu Fighting" led the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified Gold, eventually selling 11 million copies. Oddly enough, the song was recorded in just 10 minutes and started out as a B-side. His follow-ups, "Dance The Kung Fu" and "Blue Eyed Soul" would be a total flops and Douglas would be relegated to "one-hit-wonder" status. After leaving the music business, he started a publishing company that coordinates films, documentaries, and advertisements.

In 1974, Barry Manilow's first hit, "Mandy" enters the US chart on its way to number one. The song was originally written by Scott English and Richard Kerr as "Brandy", but was changed by Manilow when a group called Looking Glass had a hit with that title six months before. Manilow's version reached #11 in the UK.

In 1976, Bob Seger's fortunes are about to change when he releases the LP "Night Moves". The record would turn out to be his breakthrough album and took him from being a local Detroit favorite to an internationally known Rock star. "Night Moves" reached #8 on the US album chart and sold over 5 million copies.

In 1977, Peter Goldmark, developer of the LP (long playing) 33 1/3 rpm record and the first commercial color television system, was killed in a car accident at the age of 71.

In 1984, Michael Jackson testified in Chicago, IL, that he wrote the song "The Girl is Mine," not an Illinois man. Jackson won the case.

In 1987, the US Supreme Court rejected an appeal by a Kentucky teacher who had been fired for showing the film Pink Floyd - The Wall to a group of grade 9 to 11 students on the final day of school. what torture!!

Also in 1987, Richard Taylor of the R&B vocal group, the Manhattans, died at the age of 47.

In 1987, in New York City, Bruce Springsteen, Judy Collins, and Paul Simon, were among those who took the stage at Carnegie Hall to pay tribute to Harry Chapin on what would have been his 45th birthday. That same day, Chapin posthumously received a Congressional Medal of Honor for his work in fighting hunger.

In 1990, 52 year old Dee Clark, most often remembered for his 1961 million-seller, "Raindrops", passed away following a heart attack. The singer, born Delectus Clark, could never match the success of "Raindrops" and as The British Invasion arrived, his career took a downward spiral. By the 1980s he was performing on the oldies circuit and spent some time living in a welfare hotel in Toccoa, Georgia. Although he had suffering a stroke in 1987 that left him partially paralyzed and with a mild speech impediment, he continued to perform until his death.

In 1991, George Michael and Elton John were at #1 in the U.K. with a live version of “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” (a hit for Elton in 1974). All proceeds from the hit went to AIDS charities.

In 1991, 'Achtung Baby' by U2 debuted at #1 on Billboard's pop albums chart.

In 1992, Mariah Carey’s MTV Unplugged EP became the first Sony Minidisc to be released in the U.S.

In 1993, Guns N' Roses announced they would keep the tune written by Charles Manson "Look At Your Game, Girl" on their album, "The Spaghetti Incident?" The decision to keep the song came when the band learned that the royalties would go to the son of one of Manson's victims.

In 1999, the Recording Industry Association of America launches a lawsuit against the on-line, file sharing company Napster, seeking $100,000 in damages for each song copied.

In 2003, Britney Spears was at #1 on the US album chart with 'In the Zone,' the singer’s fourth US #1 album. The singer broke her own record from being the first female artist to have three albums enter the US chart at #1 to being the first female artist to have four albums enter at #1 consecutively.

In 2005, the MBE medal that John Lennon returned to the Queen was found in a royal vault at St. James’ Palace. Lennon returned his medal in November 1969 with a letter accompanying saying, “Your Majesty, I am returning my MBE as a protest against Britain’s involvement in the Nigeria-Biafra thing, against our support of America in Vietnam and against Cold Turky [sic] slipping down the charts. With Love, John Lennon.” Historians were calling for the medal to be put on public display.

In 2008, Dennis Yost, lead singer of the 1960s Soft Rock group, The Classics IV, died of respiratory failure at the age of 65. He had been in a nursing home since suffering a brain injury in a 2005 fall. The Classics IV's hits included "Spooky", "Stormy" and "Traces of Love".
