Carlos Santana Plays Las Vegas

Iconic guitarist Carlos Santana is planning a two-year headlining gig at the House of Blues at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Representatives for the House of Blues say Santana will have a run of shows in May and June 2012, then return in September 2012 with the residency running through 2013, totalling 80 shows. Tickets go on sale March 3. The shows are called “Greatest Hits Live: Santana – Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow is the unknown, so how do you rehearse the unknown?” the 64-year-old told the L.A. Times. “To me, the unknown is inviting African musicians to join us, or Buddy Guy or Derek Trucks or Ben Harper, people from Phish, Warren Haynes – that’s what ‘Tomorrow’ is bringing to the House of Blues.”

and in music history for february 26th:

Born on this day in 1932, Johnny Cash. Cash died of respiratory failure on September 12th 2003, aged 71.

Born on this day in 1945, Bob The Bear Hite, vocalist and harmonica player with Canned Heat. He died on April 5th 1981

In 1954, a US congresswoman introduced a bill to prohibit the distribution of "obscene, lewd, lascivious or filthy" recordings.

In 1955, sales of 45 rpm records outsold 78 rpm discs in the US for the first time. The number 45 came from taking 78 and subtracting Columbia's 33 rpm. RCA introduced the first 45 on March 31, 1949 when they released 104 single vinyl records. The first 45 to hit the Billboard charts was "You're Adorable" by Perry Como, on May 7th, 1949.

Also in 1955, R&B singer LaVern Baker appeals to the United States Congress in a letter to Michigan Representative Charles Digges Jr., to revise the Copyright Act of 1909. She says that recording artists should be protected against "note-for-note copying" of already recorded R&B tunes and arrangements by white artists and arrangers. Her request was denied.

In 1958, Perry Como was at #1 on the UK singles chart with 'Magic Moments' the 2nd #1 in a row for writers Burt Bacharach and Hal David. It stayed at #1 for eight weeks.

In 1962, trumpeter Al Hirt recorded Allen Toussaint's "Java." Released as a single late the following year, it became Hirt's biggest hit, peaking at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earning him a Gold Record.

In 1964, in Hollywood, Elvis Presley began filming his 16th movie, "Roustabout," co-starring Barbara Stanwyck, Joan Freeman, Leif Erickson, Sue Ane Langdon, Pat Buttram, Dabbs Greer, and Jack Albertson.

In 1964, the Beatles worked on the final mixes for "Can't Buy Me Love" and "You Can't Do That" tracks. The single, which was released the following month, topped the charts all over the world.

In 1965, Guitarist Jimmy Page released a solo single called "She Just Satisfies" in the UK. Page played all the instruments on it except for the drums, and produced the track, as well as singing lead vocals.

In 1966, Nancy Sinatra went to #1 on the US singles chart with 'These Boots Are Made For Walking', also a UK #1.

In 1966, the Beatles' LP "Rubber Soul" rose to #1 on the Billboard Hot 200 chart, becoming the group's seventh US album chart topper. Paul McCartney conceived the album's title after overhearing someone's description of Mick Jagger's singing style as "plastic soul." To date, the album has sold over six million copies in America.

In 1970, the Beatles album "Beatles Again" was released in the US. It was quickly re-titled "Hey Jude" to promote the inclusion of the song that led off side two and never before had been released on an album. The front and back cover pictures on the album were taken at the last Beatles photo session on August 22, 1969 at John Lennon's new 72-acre estate, Tittenhurst Park.

In 1972, Joe Tex's funk record "I Gotcha" enters the Billboard Pop chart and begins its climb to #2. Much the success of the song is rumored to be Tex's slurred delivery of the line Told you not to play with my affection, which caused many listeners to mistake the last word for one that rhymes with it.

Also in 1972, Sonny Geraci led his group, Climax, to the top of the Cashbox Magazine Best Sellers Chart with a song called "Precious And Few". Geraci was no stranger to recording success, as he had been the lead singer for The Outsiders' four Billboard Top 40 singles, including "Time Won't Let Me" in 1966.

In 1977, Sherman Garnes from Frankie Lymon And The Teenagers, died during open-heart surgery. They had the 1956 UK No.1 and US No.6 single 'Why Do Fools Fall In Love'.

In 1977, the Eagles went to #1 on the US singles chart with "New Kid On Town," the group's third US #1, a No.20 hit n the UK.

In 1978, Vladimir Horowitz marked the 50th anniversary of his U.S. debut with a performance at the White House.

In 1980, after seeing U2 play at Dublin's National Boxing Stadium in front of 2,400 people; Rob Partridge and Bill Stewart from Island Records in the UK offered the band a recording contract.

In 1983, Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' went to #1 on the US album chart. It went on to become the most successful album of all time with sales over 50 million copies.

In 1985, at the 27th annual Grammy Awards, Tina Turner's "What's Love Got To Do With It" is named Best Record and Best Song, while Cyndi Lauper wins Best New Artist. Additionally, Chuck Berry received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy.

In 1987, the LP "The Beatles", more commonly called "The White Album", became the first Beatles' LP to be issued on CD. According to the Recording Industry Association of America, the disc is group's best-selling album, going 19-times Platinum and is the tenth-best-selling album of all time in the United States.

In 1989, jazz trumpeter Roy Eldridge, who played in the big bands of Gene Krupa and Artie Shaw, died at the age of 78.

In 1990, 53 year old Cornell Gunter, former lead singer of The Coasters died in a hail of gunfire when an unknown assailant sprayed his '78 Camaro at a Las Vegas intersection.

In 1990, Sinead O'Connor was at #1 on the UK singles chart with 'Nothing Compares 2 U.' Her version of the Prince penned song was also a #1 hit in 18 other countries.

In 1995, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant began a world tour to support their reunion album "No Quarter."

At the 39th Grammy Awards, Eric Clapton wins the Best Male Pop Vocal category for "Change the World". The song is also named Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year.

In 1997, Songwriter Ben Raleigh died after setting fire to his bath robe while cooking. During his career Ben wrote Johnny Mathis' "Wonderful Wonderful", Lesley Gore's "She's A Fool", Joey Powers' "Midnight Mary", Lou Rawls' "Love Is A Hurtin' Thing", Ray Peterson's "Tell Laura I Love Her" and many others.

In 2000, Lonestar started a two week run at #1 on the US singles chart with "Amazed."

In 2002, Alanis Morissette's third album "Under Rug Swept" was released.

In 2002, the Eagles, John Fogerty, Billy Joel and Stevie Nicks are among those taking part in Four Concerts for Artists' Rights, held in the Los Angeles area to raise funds for the Recording Artists Coalition. The organization is working toward changes in the California Labor Code that affect recording artists.

In 2008, Apple announced that the iTunes Store had surpassed Best Buy to become the second largest music seller in the U.S. The number one seller at the time was Wal-Mart.

In 2008, Buddy Miles, who played drums for Wilson Pickett, The Delfonics and The Ink Spots before founding The Electric Flag with Mike Bloomfield and later joined Jimi Hendrix in Band Of Gypsys, died from congestive heart failure. He was 60.

In 2009, A 10-minute version of The Beatles' 'Revolution 1' was leaked onto the internet, giving fans a never-before-heard listen of what the White Album sessions must have been like. Only two copies of the take were made when the song was completed on June 4th, 1968. One copy left the studio with Lennon that day and the other remained behind. It was unclear which copy appeared on the bootleg, nor how anyone acquired it.

In 2011, Mark Tulin, bassist for The Electric Prunes on their 1967 hit "I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night)", suffered a fatal heart attack at the age of 62.

birthdays today include (among others): Michael Bolton (1953), Jonathan Cain - Journey (1950), Tim Commerford - Rage Against The Machine and the legendary Fats Domino (1928)

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

very interesting perspective and well written article!

Why vinyl really can get closer to the original studio sound than digital

In theory, digital audio is more accurate than vinyl records. But in many cases you will hear the artist's and producer's intentions much more accurately on vinyl than you will on CD or download.

By David Mellor

Firstly I must say that digital audio is capable of much more accurate results than vinyl, and I believe that anyone who thinks otherwise is deluding himself or herself.

I know from my own experience of having my recordings pressed onto both vinyl and CD that CD gets much closer to the sound I heard in the studio. Indeed, in the days of 16-bit recording, CD was the sound I heard in the studio, as the bits were identical.

And today, a 24-bit mix made in the studio can be released as a direct bit-for-bit copy in the form of a download. In comparison, vinyl has many degradations that alter the audio quality significantly. You may like the sound of vinyl, but no way is it more accurate.

But read on for some surprising information to the contrary...

With vinyl’s resurgence, what goes around comes around

Vinyl records are making a comeback, both locally and nationally

by Charles Beacham

No, those aren’t giant black CDs. They’re called vinyl records.

As digital music has become more prevalent, a counter-movement has taken place. Vinyl records, having long been confined to thrift stores and the houses of grandparents, are being embraced by listeners and musicians. While this latest trend might feel fresh to some youngsters, it’s really just a new spin on an old favorite.

With the advent of the CD, previous mediums of audio storage became all but extinct, yet walking into a record store today will make most anyone feel like they’re traveling back in time. Where six years ago the walls and shelves of the record store were littered with nothing but those small jewel cases we all love to hate, they are now occupied by another more majestic form of audio storage: vinyl records.

Interestingly enough, most of the audiophiles frequenting record stores aren’t baby boomers pondering on their past, they are millennials — college and high school students raised in the digital age, who all have an mp3 player or Smartphone. These adolescents are indulging in an unforgettable experience that they have made all their own. To many of these young people, discovering the LP started when they were children and has grown up with them into a life-defining passion.

Columbia/Legacy Recordings Celebrates Janis Joplin with the Release of Essential New Additions to Her Catalog:

"JANIS JOPLIN - THE PEARL SESSIONS" (NEW TWO-DISC EDITION PREMIERING NINE PREVIOUSLY UNAVAILABLE TRACKS & NEWLY DISCOVERED STUDIO RECORDINGS)

THE FIRST OF BEAR'S "SONIC JOURNALS": "BIG BROTHER AND THE HOLDING COMPANY FEATURING JANIS JOPLIN - LIVE AT THE CAROUSEL BALLROOM 1968" RECORDED & PRODUCED BY OWSLEY STANLEY ("BEAR")

"Highlights From The Pearl Sessions," Limited Edition Double 10" Vinyl Release, Struck for Record Store Day 2012

NEW YORK, Feb. 24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Columbia/Legacy Recordings celebrates Janis Joplin with the release of two essential new titles in the catalog of the American blues-rock-country-soul singer: Janis Joplin - The Pearl Sessions, a two-disc set premiering newly discovered studio recordings produced by Paul Rothchild (available Tuesday, April 17) and Big Brother and the Holding Company Featuring Janis Joplin - Live at the Carousel Ballroom 1968, an electrifying full-length concert recorded and produced for release by the legendary soundman Owsley ("Bear") Stanley (available Tuesday, March 13).

The Pearl Sessions is an historic expansion of Joplin's final studio album, providing fascinating new insight into Janis' creative process through a range of rare and previously unreleased material.

Newly available bonus material on The Pearl Sessions includes the original master mono mixes of the album's singles ("Cry Baby," "Me and Bobby McGee," "Half Moon," "Get It While You Can," "Move Over," "A Woman Left Lonely") and a full-length second disc showcasing Joplin live in the studio performing never-before-heard takes of Pearl classics. From behind-the-scenes banter to full finished takes, The Pearl Sessions shows the complexity of Joplin's genius, the tough and vulnerable aspects of her personality, her lightning sense of humor, and her razor-sharp attention to the details of her craft. Offering fresh perspectives on the more familiar "official" versions of the songs, alternate takes of "Get It While You Can," the Janis Joplin-composed "Move Over," and others open up unexpected new dimensions in the material and in the sublime nuances of Joplin's delivery.

The Pearl Sessions offers an unprecedented opportunity to be in the room with Janis, her producer, Paul Rothchild, and the members of the Full Tilt Boogie Band (guitarist John Till, pianist Richard Bell, bassist Brad Campbell, drummer Clark Pierson, organist Ken Pearson) as they create one of the enduring masterpieces of rock 'n' roll.

Originally released on January 11, 1971 (three months after her passing on October 4, 1970), Pearl debuted Joplin's final finished studio recordings. The only album Joplin ever recorded with the Full Tilt Boogie Band, the touring ensemble that had backed her on the Festival Express (a mythic 1970 concert tour by railroad across Canada with the Grateful Dead, the Band and others), Pearl included canonical studio recordings of songs that had been introduced to audiences on tour. A live version of "Tell Me Mama" (a song not included on the original Pearl), recorded during the legendary Toronto Festival Express date, is included as a bonus track on The Pearl Sessions. Also included as a bonus is Janis' scorching live version of "Half Moon," recorded for her appearance on "The Dick Cavett Show" on August 3, 1970.

Peaking at #1 on the Billboard 200, a position it held for nine weeks, Pearl included some of Janis's most familiar and best-loved performances including her cover of Kris Kristofferson's "Me and Bobby McGee" and her off-the-cuff a cappella "Mercedes Benz." A never released alternate take and the original "Me and Bobby McGee" demo are both included on The Pearl Sessions.

When putting together material for a 40th anniversary edition of Pearl, researchers discovered a treasure-trove of previously uncatalogued audio tapes from the album's sessions, produced by Paul Rothchild. An industry legend, perhaps best-known for producing the first five Doors albums, Rothchild further solidified his position in music history with his work on Pearl.

The Pearl Sessions brings together the original mono versions of the album's 45s and the original LP tracks alongside a revelatory cavalcade of newly-discovered alternate versions, outtakes and vocal takes that put you in the studio with Janis Joplin.

A limited edition double 10" high fidelity vinyl gatefold release, Highlights from The Pearl Sessions will be available exclusively for Record Store Day (April 21, 2012). A companion to the newly curated two CD edition of Joplin's farewell masterpiece, Pearl, this vinyl release presents previously unreleased and seldom heard takes and early versions of classic songs, culled from the recently discovered tapes used to create The Pearl Sessions.

A limited edition 12" vinyl edition of Pearl will also be available on Tuesday, April 17. A breakout from the Classic LP Collection box, the album is pressed at RTI on 180-gram audiophile vinyl.

Original Recordings Produced by Paul Rothchild

The release of The Pearl Sessions marks a renewed focus on Janis Joplin and the continuing influence of her music. Columbia/Legacy Recording will release Live at the Carousel Ballroom 1968, a previously unavailable live concert recording of Big Brother and the Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin, recorded June 23, 1968 by legendary soundman Owsley Stanley, a/k/a "Bear," who supervised the mastering of this release before his fatal car accident in his adopted homeland of Australia on March 12, 2011.

Dedicated to Bear, the album will be released on March 13, 2012, marking the one-year anniversary of his passing.

A special collector's edition of Live at the Carousel Ballroom will be available in a special two 12" vinyl LP gatefold collector's edition on Tuesday, March 27.

"This evening was special," remembers Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart who was in the Carousel Ballroom that night in June '68. "The Bear loved Janis. Her ability to sing multiple tones simultaneously and then morph them into heart wrenching chords was singular. Her primal cry, filled with tenderness and hurt, was delivered at 140 decibels as the band pushed here into the slipstream. There could be no one more qualified to bring Big Brother and the Holding Company to life than Owsley. Together they captured the magic. The Bear sure had it right this night."

and in music history for february 24th:

depending on which site you go to, the great George Harrison was born on this date (or the 25th) in 1943 (died in 2001)

In 1956, with the city looking for a legal way to shut down the increasing number of rock 'n' roll shows, police in Cleveland, Ohio were instructed to enforce a 1931 ordinance barring people under the age of 18 from dancing in public unless accompanied by an adult.

In 1957, in West Hollywood, Elvis Presley recorded "Loving You," the title song of his second feature film.

In 1957, Buddy Holly recorded a new version of “That’ll Be the Day,” the title being taken from a phrase used by John Wayne in the film The Searchers.

In 1962, Elvis Presley had his 10th UK chart topper with "Can't Help Falling In Love" / "Rock-A-Hula Baby."

In 1963, the Rolling Stones started a Sunday night residency at The Station Hotel, Richmond, Surrey. The Stones were paid £24 ($41) for the gig and played on the first night to 66 people.

In 1965, in Hollywood, a month after they recorded "Help Me Ronda" for issue on an album, the Beach Boys re-recorded the song as "Help Me Rhonda" for release as a single. For the first time, other than on their Christmas album, guitarist Al Jardine sang lead. The Los Angeles session musicians known as the Wrecking Crew provided much of the instrumental track, along with Carl Wilson on guitar and Brian Wilson on acoustic piano and Hammond B-3 organ. Backing vocals were by Mike Love, Carl, Dennis and Brian Wilson.

In 1967, in Los Angeles, the Supremes began recording "The Happening." They completed the track the following day. Wrecking Crew drummer Hal Blaine joined the Funk Brothers to provide the instrumentation, with background vocals handled by Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson. When "The Happening" was released as a single a month later, it was the final single issued by the Supremes under that name. Beginning with their next single release, "Reflections," the group's billing changed to Diana Ross and the Supremes, and Florence Ballard was replaced with Cindy Birdsong of Patti LaBelle and the Blue Belles.

In 1969, the Jimi Hendrix Experience played their last British concert before dissolving the group.

In 1969, during a concert at California's San Quentin State Prison, Johnny Cash recorded "A Boy Named Sue."

In 1970, the Jackson 5 released the single "ABC."

In 1973, Roberta Flack had her second US #1 when “Killing Me Softly with His Song,” started a five-week run at the top. The song was written about US singer-songwriter Don McLean.

In 1975, Led Zeppelin released the album "Physical Graffiti."

Recording sessions for the album were initially disrupted when bassist/keyboardist John Paul Jones considered leaving the band. After reuniting at Headley Grange, the band wrote and recorded eight songs, the combined length of which stretched the album beyond the typical length of an LP. This prompted the band to make Physical Graffiti a double album by including previously unreleased tracks from earlier recording sessions.

Physical Graffiti was commercially and critically successful; the album went 16x platinum (though this signifies shipping of eight million copies, as it is a double album) in the US alone.

In 1976, the Eagles LP "Their Greatest Hits 1971 - 1975" becomes the first album in history to be certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. The new certification represented sales of at least 1 million copies for albums and 2 million copies for singles. The Platinum award was originated in the early seventies because Gold status was achieved by most popular records in a very short period of time. Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

as long as vinyl continues its uprising, there will be stories like this one, and i never get tired of them!

The return of vinyl records

New and used records making a comeback

by Tim Jagielo

Ben Curtis, 15, works at Tri-City Trading Post in Fenton, and is in 10th grade at Fenton High School. He skipped cassettes, vinyl, and even mostly CDs in purchasing his music. He downloads everything onto his iPod, and said he has more than 1,200 songs stored in the pocket-sized device.

When Michael Absher of Flint had his entire vinyl collection, the untold amount took up half of a room. As a DJ, he has used cassettes, vinyl, CDs and now, downloaded music.

But a shifting tide in vinyl records might bring these two generations together. Whether buying or selling, vinyl is moving in 2012, with bands pressing the 180-gram records hoping to tap into a very niche market, and resale shops are ramping up their vinyl sales.

Ben's mom, Michelle Curtis, owner of Tri-City Trading Post is one rare individual who enjoys the sound of an antique Victrola record player. This is the one with the horn sticking out of it. "It's very grainy," she said. "I like it."

She has dedicated vinyl fans that come into her store, but she doesn't have many herself. She has also seen a resurgence in records being sold to her store, something she credits with the economic climate. "It makes me feel bad, it's something they've passed down from their parents," she said.

John Peel’s Record Collection To Become Online Museum

Peel's record collection included over 25,000 LPs, 40,000 singles and thousands of CDs.

It has been revealed that the Arts Council and the BBC plan to make John Peel's record collection into an interactive, online museum.

Peel's record collection included over 25,000 LPs, 40,000 singles and thousands of CDs which will become part of 'The Space'; a new digital service, which will run from May to October across various platforms including PCs and smartphones. It also looks set to be available as a red button on-demand service via Freeview HD.

Direcor of the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts, Tom Barker, said: "It is the first step in creating an interactive online museum with access to the entire collection, one of the most important archives in modern music history."

Frank Prendergast of Eye Film And Television commented: "The idea is to digitally recreate John’s home studio and record collection, which users will be able to interact with and contribute to, while viewing Peel’s personal notes, archive performances and new filmed interviews with musicians."

The Space hopes to be launched later this year.

Guitar Hero On Going Vinyl

Local Guitar virtuoso Guy Buttery has explained his reasons for releasing To Disappear in Place on vinyl, despite the risk of diminished sales.

Speaking to Times Live, the SAMA winning songwriter said his desire to release an album exclusively on vinyl stems from a childhood obsession with LP’s.

“The inspiration for releasing an album exclusively on vinyl goes back to an obsession I had with collecting LPs from as young as 14 years old. It was eventually long-time friend Steve Hawes from Erased Records who actually manifested the project for me,” he said.

The global music industry is facing uncertain times, with the challenges of piracy and the instant distribution of media enabled by the Internet forcing artists to approach the sordid business of sales and marketing from a new angle.

“I think we all know that CD sales have slumped pretty low in recent times. In fact music sales are down 80% worldwide. I think the phrase “sound business decision” maybe an over-statement but it surely is another way to get the fans to hear the music,” said the revered guitarist.

In reality, Buttery seems more intent on communicating his musical vision than maximising his returns.

“In my case by ‘going vinyl’ in South Africa, I’ve probably marginalised myself even further into the darkest corners of all that is niche, but I’ve had a great time doing it,” he said.

According to Buttery, there is still a niche market for vinyl records, as fans react against the digital era and its lack of tangible products.

“Despite the ongoing change in the industry, vinyl records have remained a sought after product to serious music fundis, DJs and album collectors. If anything, with the rise and rise of digital music, the vinyl has become a sort of antidote symbol for those that value the tangible embodiment of hard copy albums.”

Ask. Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 20, 2012

DEAR JERRY: I have a very mysterious record, and would like to know what you make of it, especially after you just wrote about two Beatles records with some of the print missing.

Unlike those, being misprinted only on one side, my weirdo record has no song title or artist credited on either side. It says it's an RCA Victor Record Prevue of Coming Attractions.

Where the credits would normally be, all it has is “Release 50-49 47-3990.”

Making identification even more difficult is that both sides are unfamiliar instrumentals.

It's probably not as collectible as a Beatles misprint, but it would be nice to know what it is.
—Lavern Dewey, York, Pa.

DEAR LAVERN: Shortly after RCA Victor introduced the music world to the 45 rpm single (February 1949), they kicked off the Record Prevue of Coming Attractions series, specifically to make dee jays aware of their latest singles.

For the first three years, they used the two-digit year and sequential number in the series. In 1949, the numbers began at 49-1 and continued until the end of the year (approximately 49-60). The same format applied through 1951.

This makes your record (50-49) the 49th Prevue disc of 1950.

Along with the Prevue “Release” number, the RCA selection, or catalog, number of the commercial single is shown on each promotional issue.

In your example, the selection number is 47-3990, the “47” being one of RCA's prefixes for 45 rpm singles. The 78 rpm of the same two songs is 20-3990 (“20” indicating a 78).

Even without much of the printing on the labels, knowing the selection number, and with an RCA discography handy, makes identifying the artist and titles a snap.

“Release 50-49” is by Larry Green and His Orchestra, and those mysterious instrumentals are “I'll Get By (As Long As I Have You)” and “Western Melody.”

Assuming the lack of essential details — artist and titles — is due to a printing mistake may be the real mistake.

Casting doubt is the recent discovery of “Release 50-50,” the very next number in the series. It is blank in the exact same places as 50-49. It seems unlikely the same error would appear on two separate releases.

For the record, Prevue 50-50 is Piano Red's “The Wrong Yoyo” and “My Gal Jo,” with a regular RCA selection number of 50-0106 . Here, the “50” indicates a 45, and a 78 would be 22-0106.

The Record Prevues by these colorfully named folks, Green and Red, both issued in December, were the last ones of 1950.

Since using two sets of numbers ultimately led to confusion, RCA Record Prevues made after 1951 retained only selection number.

Record Prevues, and a later series of “Dealer Prevues,” are either singles (two songs by the same artist) or extended plays (more than two tracks, by two or more different artists).

Some of the value of the Prevues is due to their being made in comparatively small quantities, but most of their worth is based on what's in the grooves — the style of music and collectability of the artist.

The Larry Green orchestral platter, in an easy listening style, is about $25, whereas Piano Red's blues entry is $100.

DEAR JERRY: Over 10 years ago, you listed the 10 top C&W artists with the most Top 10 hits.

One thing I noticed was that Dolly Parton was the only female on the list.

How has that list changed since then?
—Arthur Gibson, Cleveland, Tenn.

DEAR ARTHUR: Not as much as you might think, though Dolly is no longer the only dolly in the boy's club.

Here are the current Top 10 makers, with their number of Top 10 hits now/then:

1. Eddy Arnold ( 92/92)
2. George Strait (85/64)
3. George Jones (78/78)
4. Conway Twitty (75/75)
5. Merle Haggard (71/71)
6. Reba McEntire (59/52)
7. Ernest Tubb (58/58)
8. Red Foley (56/56)
9. Dolly Parton (55/55)
10. Waylon Jennings (54/53)
10. Webb Pierce (54/54)

IZ ZAT SO? Except for the top two slots on the above list — where Eddy and George will most likely flip-flop — very few changes are expected during this decade. We will update it when we reach the 2020s.

As for No. 1 Billboard C&W hits, George Strait leads the pack with 44, four more than runner-up Conway Twitty.

In this category, there doesn't seem to be anyone with a chance to catch Strait, whose 45th No. 1 hit (“Love's Gonna Make It Alright”) may be just weeks away. It's No. 8 and rising as of this writing.

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

a wisconsin record store maintains the vinyl allure for many in the madison area:

B-Sides navigates tricky waters of music industry for 30 years

By Samuel Schmitt

In the era of digital downloads, instant file sharing and a slew of portable music players, it is a rare occurrence to stumble upon a store that is dedicated to selling tangible discs, especially of the vinyl variety.

B-Side Records, a locally-owned record store on State Street, has been around long enough to witness the evolution of several musical formats, with the store nearing its 30-year anniversary this coming October.

The name, B-Side, fits the nature of the store. For those born in the era of Walkmans and cassettes, or perhaps even after that, the B-side of a record refers to the opposite side of a vinyl, where songs that were less likely to be aired on the radio were placed.

In an email interview with The Badger Herald, owner Steve Manley explained how he got started in the business and how it has changed over the past decades.

Alive! Peter Frampton Talks Classic Album and His Lost Les Paul

Michael Leonard

By any standards, Peter Frampton had a remarkable 2011. The veteran English guitar star and songwriter played a Frampton Comes Alive! 35 tour to acclaim, revisiting the album that made his name globally for a record that remains one of the best-selling live albums ever. The iconic 3-pickup Gibson Les Paul Custom played on the album became famous in its own right. And, after it was presumed missing for 32 years, Frampton got his Comes Alive! Gibson Les Paul back in late 2011. In a bizarre tale, Peter explains all below.

2012 will see more Comes Alive! shows from Frampton, plus much playing and writing (already started) on THAT famous Gibson Les Paul…

The first quarterly edition to carry articles on Jack White's "Third Man Records" and its efforts to diminish lost revenues for its music artists who lose income to the hands of eBay LP "flippers," and a review of the "northern soul records" phenomena, where huge prices are being paid for obscure vinyl 45 rpm records, due to their association to UK dance clubs in the North of England during the 1960s.

The publication helps guide readers to find modern and collectible vinyl lp, vinyl 45, hip hop records, indy rock vinyl albums, classical music, record stores, beatles albums, country music, jazz music, folk music, r&b artists, blues music, rock n roll music, heavy metal, funk, pop music, and more.

THOUSAND FOOT KRUTCH Announce 'The End Is Where We Begin' Details; Release Planned For April 17th

TFK's 6th Studio Album!

FOUR TOP 25 ACTIVE ROCK HITS

NEW SONGS ALREADY PLACED ON ESPN, NASCAR, NCAA SPORTS AND MORE

"LET THE SPARKS FLY" NOW AT RADIO!

Sometimes the best way to move forward is to go back to the basics, taking all of the raw energy and emotion of the past and channeling it into the present. This is exactly what THOUSAND FOOT KRUTCH is doing on the aptly titled ‘The End Is Where We Begin’, which also finds Canada’s favorite modern rockers voluntarily walking away from record label life all together (even after a slew of profitable offers came along) to reignite the passionate DIY work ethos that first emerged over a decade ago.

While waiting for inspiration to arrive and fuel the writing process, TFK’s songwriter and front man Travis McNevan popped in the band’s seminal debut ‘That’s What People Do,’ which echoed respected rappers like Run-DMC and the Beastie Boys, cross-pollinated with the rhythmic grooves of Red Hot Chili Peppers. Those inspirations return throughout ‘The End Is Where We Begin,’ alongside the group’s continuously marinating blend of towering choruses, razor-sharp rhythms, epic arrangements and stadium shaking rumbles.

“Without trying, this record has a very militant theme to it, with songs like ‘War Of Change’ and ‘Courtesy Call’ painting more of a visual for that,” states McNevan. “There's an urgency to it and I think the timing feels right. This record's heart can be summed up by ‘Be The Change,’ the album’s lyric and phrase seen throughout the album artwork.”

For those who’ve been following the Ontario-bred players since their formation in 1998, it’s been a continuously escalating highlight reel that includes best-selling albums, four top 25 Active Rock hits (including the top 20 smashs "Move" and “Fire It Up”), plus a slew of soundtrack slots. In fact, the group has literally infiltrated every facet of pop culture, from ongoing ESPN placements, to various NASCAR, MLB, NHL and NFL airings (including the 2010 Super Bowl), along with the “GI Joe” movie trailer, WGN-TV’s “Smallville” and EA Sports’ “NHL 2010” video game.

That trend is continuing at breakneck speed with the new project, which even prior to hitting streets, found the lead single “Let The Sparks Fly” and fellow adrenaline-infused rocker “Light Up the Sky” picked up by ESPN. Both tracks also serve as the ultimate tone setters for the sonic explosions contained within ‘The End Is Where We Begin,’ which could be considered the ultimate THOUSAND FOOT KRUTCH mix-tape showcasing a myriad of full-throttled personalities.

THOUSAND FOOT KRUTCH is also already on tour in support of the new album as part of the REDvolution Tour alongside Red, Manafest, Nine Lashes and Kiros.

Iron Maiden Announces "Maiden England" North American Tour

UK metal icons Iron Maiden have announced the "Maiden England Tour" in North America this summer. Up to July 21, 2012, the special guest act will be Alice Cooper and after July 21, 2012, the band will be Coheed & Cambria.

Vocalist Bruce Dickinson had the following comments on the tour:

"We have great fun playing the History of Maiden Tours because it gives us an opportunity between new albums to go out and play songs from our earlier catalogue. It’s always fantastic seeing the crowd reaction from a new generation of fans who have never experienced some of these tracks performed live before, and of course we know our longstanding fans will enjoy seeing the original Seventh Son Tour re-visited - with many other surprises! Our intention is to play about two thirds of the original track list of Maiden England (shown below*), including some songs we have not played live in a very, very long time, plus other favourites we just know the fans are going to want to hear! We always try to give our fans a great show musically, but we have always tried to make it as entertaining and memorable an experience as we can visually. And we all feel this show is going to do that splendidly! We can't wait to get started in Charlotte."

and in music history for february 21st:

In 1958, the first Flying V, by Gibson, was shipped from a factory in Kalamazoo, MI.

In 1964, a New York band called the Echoes recruited a young piano player named Billy Joel. The quartet would play cover songs under the names the Lost Souls, the Commandos and the Emerald Lords before Billy split two years later to join The Hassles. He would make his breakthrough in 1973 with "Piano Man".

In 1964, the Rolling Stones released the single "Not Fade Away" in the UK, two weeks before it was issued in North America.
The Rolling Stones version of "Not Fade Away" was one of their first classic hits. Recorded in late January 1964 and released by Decca on February 21, 1964, with "Little by Little" as the B-side, it was their first Top 5 hit in Great Britain, reaching #3. In March 1964 it was also the Rolling Stones' first single release in the United States, on the London Records label, with "I Wanna Be Your Man" as the B-side (briefly preceded by "Stoned", which had immediately been withdrawn). The single reached #48 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. "Not Fade Away" was not on the UK version of their debut album, The Rolling Stones, but was the opening track of the US version released a month later as England's Newest Hitmakers. It was a mainstay at Rolling Stones concerts in their early years, usually opening the shows. It was revived in that capacity for their 1994-95 Voodoo Lounge Tour. Ironically the Stones' version, unlike the original, chooses to fade-out on the "not fade away" lyric.

In 1966, Elvis Presley began filming "Spinout," co-starring Shelley Fabares, his 22nd movie.

In 1967, Elvis Presley recorded "Clambake," the title song of his 25th movie, which also co-starred Shelley Fabares.

Also in 1967, at EMI's Abbey Road Studios in London, the Beatles finished recording "Fixing A Hole." Initial tracks for the song had been recorded at Regent Sound Studio on February 9.

In 1970, Simon And Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" entered the UK album chart at number 1, where it would stay for 12 consecutive weeks. It would return to the top seven times, spending a total of 41 weeks there over the next two years. In the US, the LP spent 10 weeks at number 1 on the strength of three Top Ten singles and was the number 7 album of the decade in America.

Also in 1970, The Jackson 5 make their TV debut on American Bandstand where they sing "I Want You Back".

In 1975, John Lennon released the Phil Spector-produced album "Rock 'n' Roll" after a much shabbier version of the material called "Roots" began to be marketed on late-night television. "Roots" was music executive Morris Levy's version of the "oldies" sessions, which Lennon had been court-ordered to undertake as payment for appropriating a Chuck Berry lyric for the Beatles' "Come Together." Levy's copyright was judged to have been infringed by the line "Here come old flat-top, he come groovin' up slowly." "Rock 'n' Roll" was Lennon's last record before taking a five-year hiatus from the music business. In 2004, Yoko Ono supervised the remixing of "Rock 'n' Roll" for reissue, including four bonus tracks from the Spector sessions.

In 1980, Janet Vogel, who sang soprano for The Skyliners on their 1959, US number one hit, "Since I Don't Have You", committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning. She was 37.

In 1981, Dolly Parton topped the Billboard Pop Chart with her own composition, "9 to 5". The record reached #47 in the UK.

In 1981, REO Speedwagon started a 15 week run at the top of the Billboard album chart with "Hi Infidelity".

In 1982, disc jockey, Murray "The K" Kaufman, died of cancer at the age of 60. Kaufman's influence on Rock and Roll and its audience led the Beatles to seek him out when they first came to America in 1964. Kaufman's friendship with the group gave him cause to start calling himself "The Fifth Beatle".

In 1987, "Stand By Me" by Ben E. King topped the UK singles chart after it was featured in a movie by the same name. The song first became a hit in 1961.

In 1990, Milli Vanilli are awarded the Best New Artist Grammy. It would take until the following November for producer Frank Farian to confess that the duo of Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus never actually sang a single note on their recordings, causing the award to be withdrawn.

In 2001, Johnny Cash is released from a Nashville hospital after recovering from pneumonia in time to accept his Grammy Award that night for Best Male Country Vocal Performance for his cover of Neil Diamond's "Solitary Man".

In 2007, after a Motown spokesman had said the film Dreamgirls had upset several of their artists who felt the label was falsely depicted in a negative light, Dreamworks, the makers of Oscar-nominated musical took out a full page ad in the movie trade papers The Hollywood Reporter and Daily Variety where they apologized to Motown Records, saying "Dreamgirls is a work of fiction. It is also an homage to Motown." Berry Gordy accepted the apology.

In 2008, a US music aficionado sold his collection of more than three million vinyl albums, singles and compact discs to an eBay buyer from Ireland for just over $3 million. An eBay spokeswoman said the sale is one of the highest ever for the online auction site.

In 2009, an exhibit of James Brown's personal belongings opened at South Carolina State University. The collection included photos, crystal-studded suits, and even the hair curlers Brown used to form his signature pompadour.

In 2011, the Cars announced that May 10th would be the release date for their first new album in 24 years.

In 2011, Boy George revealed a Culture Club 30th anniversary album and tour plans for 2012.

Aso in 2011, the Monkees announced their 45th anniversary tour featuring Mickey Dolenz, Davey Jones and Peter Tork.

birthdays today include (among others): David Geffin (69), Paul Newton (Uriah Heep) (64), Mary Chapin Carpenter (54), Randy Blythe (Lamb of God) (46) and Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads) (63)
