'Drive' Soundtrack Headed For Vinyl Release

Last year's cult hit is scheduled to be released on vinyl via Invada, the Bristol-based label owned by Portishead's Geoff Barrow. The soundtrack is to hit the streets on 21st May.

The original soundtrack was one of the most praised aspects of the film, which featured Ryan Gosling as a stuntman/getaway driver and was released last year to generally rave reviews. Featuring original music by Kavinsky & Lovefoxxx, Cliff Martinez, The Chromatics, Desire and Riziero Ortolani, amongst others, the soundtrack's digital release sold impressively well upon the film's release.

"I am very excited for Invada Records to release the Drive soundtrack on vinyl," said Barrow of the release. "It is nice to see good music allowed to play a pivotal role in a great film."

THE LONESOME SAVAGES - "All Outta Love" EP 7" (Turk 009)

The Lonesome Savages are a Madison band featuring members of DEAD LUKE as well as ex-members of ZOLA JESUS. The first thing you'll notice about this release is Max Elliott's unmistakable howl, which you might recognize from his solo work on Sacred Bones Records. Alongside it you've got Dead Luke's searing leads (also from Sacred Bones Records along with Florida's Dying, Sweet Rot and Moon Glyph), and the original collaborator with his then-girlfriend (now ex-girlfriend), Nika/Zola Jesus. They've created a punkabilly masterpiece that teeters on Crampsesque infatuation but never really comes across as ripping them off. Just honest 50's inflected rock n roll revamped with elements of the current garage punk sound. This thing is loud as hell and the production straddles the line between blown out madness and vintage rock n roll warmness. The 7"'s digital download comes with an added 2 track solo digital single from Dead Luke! One unreleased track plus his cover of Suicide's "Ghost Rider"! Limited to 350 hand-numbered copies so they WILL go fast! First 100 are on color vinyl and available exclusively from the label directly.

WHISKEY MAKER ROLLS OUT ONLINE PROGRAM TO GET FANS HOME SAFELY AFTER THE SHOW AND DEBUTS NEW RESPONSIBILITY-THEMED TV CAMPAIGN WITH ZAC BROWN BAND

Jack Daniel's Drinking School Featuring Zac Brown Band Aims to Inform Consumers About Responsible Consumption

LYNCHBURG, Tenn., March 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Jack Daniel's announces that it has started a "drinking school," and it's not what most folks will think it is.

In fact, the "Jack Daniel's Drinking School" is a new way to educate consumers about responsible consumption through an on-line based program (www.jackdanielsdrinkingschool.com) that provides helpful tips and reminders. Jack Daniel's is also debuting its new television campaign featuring two-time GRAMMY Award winners and multi-platinum artists Zac Brown Band sharing a message of loyalty and responsibility among friends and band members.

As part of a recently-formed partnership with Zac Brown Band, the Jack Daniel's Drinking School will offer concertgoers the opportunity to register for free designated-driver rides to and from select Zac Brown Band concerts in cities across the U.S. through BeMyDD. To receive one of the 100 free rides per eligible concert market, consumers must watch one of a series of online videos featuring the Zac Brown Band reminding folks to enjoy themselves, but to also take care of themselves as well as those around them. The videos are supplemented with information from leading expert organizations on responsible consumption and fighting drunk driving including The Century Council. Those who receive a free ride can also bring along up to three friends, ensuring the safety of many concertgoers as well as making the roads safer for others.

"Our emphasis on responsible consumption is incorporated into all of the ways we communicate with our friends across the country," said Jack Daniel's Senior Brand Manager Jennifer Powell. "The Jack Daniel's Drinking School is a great vehicle for this message and further proof of how strongly we feel about responsibility."

In addition to the free rides, the Jack Daniel's Drinking School offers concert attendees at select Zac Brown Band tour stops the opportunity to register as a designated driver for the evening of the show. Upon arrival at the concert venue, registered designated drivers can stop by a predetermined site to receive a Jack Daniel's Drinking School keychain and armband signifying their willingness to get their friends home safely following the show.

"Our partnership with Jack Daniel's provides concertgoers with a responsible solution to safely get to the show and back home," said BeMyDD President and CEO Arthur Simanovsky. "By letting BeMyDD do the driving, consumers can enjoy the evening with the peace of mind that they've made the responsible choice."

In addition to the Drinking School, Jack Daniel's is launching a national television campaign which includes a spot in which Zac Brown reminds viewers to "Protect Your Band" just as he and the rest of his crew feel it's their responsibility to take care of each other. The spot includes scenes of the band playing together and conveys a feeling of loyalty for those around you and love for what you do.

"THE KENTUCKY DERBY IS DECADENT AND DEPRAVED BY HUNTER S. THOMPSON" Set for Release on 429 Records/ Paris April 3rd

All Star Cast Including Tim Robbins, Dr. John, Bill Frisell, Ralph Steadman, Annie Ross And Others Bring Author's Masterpiece To Life With Music And Narration

"This is it. This is pure Gonzo!!"—Bill Cardoso

SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- 429 Records through an exclusive license with Paris Records, is set to release "THE KENTUCKY DERBY IS DECADENT AND DEPRAVED BY HUNTER S. THOMPSON"—featuring an all-star cast of musicians and actors led by Tim Robbins, Dr. John, Bill Frisell, Ralph Steadman, Annie Ross, John Joyce III and Will Forte who bring Thompson's classic Gonzo reportage on the 1970 Kentucky Derby to life through spoken word and musical composition. Conceived by executive producer Michael Minzer, the project was produced by Hal Willner who brought together a stellar group of musicians led by composer and arranger Bill Frisell and including Curtis Fowlkes (trombone), Ron Miles (trumpet), Eyvind Kang (viola), Doug Weiselman (woodwinds), Jenny Scheinman (violin), Hank Roberts (cello) and Kenny Wolleson (drums, percussion). Ralph Steadman does double duty portraying himself in the narration and contributing original artwork for the project. "THE KENTUCKY DERBY IS DECADENT AND DEPRAVED BY HUNTER S. THOMPSON" will be available on April 3rd.

In 2005, Paris Records founder Michael Minzer called up his friend Hal Willner with the idea of recording a definitive performance of an all time classic piece of journalism, "The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved." Originally published in Scanlan's Monthly in June of 1970, it's the quintessential example of Hunter S. Thompson's uniquely humorous and piercing insight—the article that inspired the term Gonzo Journalism (coined by the late Bill Cardoso). Minzer and Willner had collaborated before on several "wide open" tributes to such literary luminaries as Allen Ginsberg's "The Lion For Real", William S. Burrough's "Dead City Radio" and Terry Southern's "Give Me your Hump!." Hal was friends with Ralph Steadman who's involvement was a major boost in getting the project off the ground. Hal also was able to enlist Tim Robbins as lead narrator and Bill Frisell to oversee the music and the project was off to the races so to speak.

Says Michael Minzer: "The big challenge was to match Bill's sharply drawn moody vignettes with the perfect segments of a very long reading. When we realized that it all worked out beautifully, Hal just said 'I told you I had worked on this!''

Says Tim Robbins: "I couldn't be more thrilled to be a part of this project—who could say no to such an opportunity to toast the king of Gonzo journalism? It's been a great pleasure diving into the chaotic, genius prose of Hunter and I feel flattered to be working with such a stellar group of creative folks like Hal Wilner, Ralph Steadman, Bill Frisell and Michael Minzer who made it come alive so brilliantly."

In 1955, Elvis Presley, Scotty Moore and Bill Black performed at Porky's Rooftop Club in Newport, Arkansas.

In 1960, after completing his military service with the 1st Medium Tank Battalion, 32nd Armor, Elvis Presley left Germany. On his way back to America, he set foot on UK soil for the first and only time when the plane carrying him stopped for refueling at Prestwick Airport in Scotland.

In 1963, the Four Seasons score their third consecutive Billboard #1 with "Walk Like A Man". It made #12 in the UK. During the recording session, the room directly above the studio caught fire, and smoke and water began pouring in. Producer Bob Crewe was so intent on finishing the production that he blocked the studio door and continued recording until firemen broke the door down.

While not as widely played or recognized as The Who version, it certainly is more distorted with a far more intense guitar sound. This version was ranked #73 on the list of "The 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time" of Rolling Stone.

The tune was originally written in French, titled "Le Moribund" ("The Dying Man") and recorded as an album cut by The Kingston Trio. It was recommended by Jacks to The Beach Boys, who did record it, but declined to release it. Their decision worked out well for Jacks, who sold over eleven and a half million copies of the record.

In 1999, Dusty Springfield died of breast cancer at the age of 59, after a five year battle. She would be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame less than two weeks after she passed away, having placed 18 singles in the Billboard Hot 100 from 1964 to 1970.

His exact age is uncertain as most biographies say he was 66, but friends say he was actually 75. He originally released "The Twist" on the B-side of his 1959 tune "Teardrops On Your Letter", but after Chubby Checker took the song to number one, Ballard re-released his version and had a Top 30 hit with it as well in 1960. Black Prairie Releasing Vinyl for Record Store Day

Singers, Volume 1: Portland

Sugar Hill Records has just announced the release of 'Singers, Volume 1: Portland,' a limited edition 7-inch vinyl record from Portland, Oregon-based Black Prairie in celebration of Record Store Day – April 21st, 2012.

When Black Prairie formed, part of their vision was to become a backing band for singers. To quote dobroist Chris Funk, “As Dylan nor Neil Young have yet to make that call into the home office,” Black Prairie decided to surge forward with their own series of EPs, backing singers from different parts of the country and different walks of musical life. The first will focus on singers who call the city of Portland, Oregon home, kicking off with tracks from James Mercer (Shins/Broken Bells) and Sallie Ford (Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside), which will each comprise a side on the 7-inch Record Store Day release. The full EP, set for release in the spring, will feature Langhorne Slim, The Minus 5, folk legend Michael Hurley, Caleb Klauder from The Foghorn String Band and Luzelena Mendoza from Y La Bamba.

Following the Singers project, the band has plans to release a full-length LP, their second for the Sugar Hill label, in the fall of 2012. Grammy-nominated producer Tucker Martine is at the helm and the LP will feature more gorgeous vocals from Annalisa Tornfelt as well as full drums and a few surprise guests.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Mark it on your calendars, the deluxe edition of the debut Mos Genrator album, featuring a full length LP, a CD with previously unreleased tracks and a full incendiary live concert, and a digital download of further live, demo, and jam tracks will be available throughout North America on April 10th, 2012! In conjunction with Nail Distribution, Ripple Music is proud to announce that this quintessential debut album and amazing musical package will now be available to a wider market of insatiable rock n’ roll fans.

“This Mos Generator package is one of those sets that speaks to the lifelong Mos fan, as well as those who are discovering the band for the first time,” states Tony Reed, singer and guitarist for the band. “It was a goal for myself and the label to create a package that was affordable, something that looked cool, and was packed with some special moments from the bands ten year history.”

Featuring over two and a half hours of music, the Mos Generator 10th Anniversary Edition was designed with the music fan in mind. The package includes three popular formats for listening to the bands 70’s-inspired hard rock in the way of 12” vinyl, CD, and digital download, and all packaged in an eye-popping 12” gatefold jacket.

Here’s what the press is saying:

“ . . . like the rampaging inhabitants of a sonic Jurassic Park; thunderously heavy, jaw droppingly magnificent and maybe just a little bit scary. This is music that went extinct many years ago, but against all expectation and logic, here it is alive and thriving in the modern age. 4/5” -- The BCFM Sunday Rockshow

"Of all the second-wave Sabbath types, these guys were and remain by far the most original, with tricky prog tempos, tunefully sludgy Tony Iommi-style lo-register riffage and a sense of humor to rival their sense of purpose. If metal is your thing and you slept on this stuff when it first came out – and a lot of people did, this was before myspace, let alone youtube – now’s a good time to rediscover them." -- Lucid Culture

“Really a fantastic package all around. Once again Ripple Music not only delivers the goods, but they go the extra and exceed all my expectations on this one." -- Heavy Metal Time Machine

and in music history for march 1st:

In 1941, the first FM Radio station opened in Nashville, TN.

In 1952, Faron Young had his first recording session for Capitol.

In 1952, Sam Phillips launched Sun Records by releasing "Drivin' Slow" by 16-year-old saxophonist Johnny London.

In 1956, the Fats Domino album 'Rock and Rollin' With Fats Domino' was released on the Imperial Label.

In 1957, Chuck Berry released "School Days" on Chess Records. It became his biggest hit to date. It is one of his best known songs and is often considered a rock and roll anthem.

In 1957, the Everly Brothers record "Bye Bye Love", a teen-age love song that was written by 37 year old Boudleaux Bryant and his 31 year old wife, Felice. Although nearly 30 other artists turned the song down, the Everly's version will rise to #2 in the US and #6 in the UK by next May.

In 1958, Buddy Holly and the Crickets began their only UK tour, playing two sets each evening for 25 nights.

In 1961, Elvis Presley signed a five-year movie deal with producer Hal Wallis.

In 1958, Johnny Mathis released the album "Johnny's Greatest Hits."

In 1963, Gerry and the Pacemakers release their first British single, "How Do You Do It", which will go on to top the UK chart the following April. The song had been turned down by Adam Faith and although the Beatles had recorded it, they declined to release their version.

In 1964, the Beatles start working on their first film, 'A Hard Day's Night,' shooting the first scene at Marylebone train station in London. They also hold the top two spots on Billboard's Hot 100 with "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "She Loves You".

In 1965, after selling over 3 million copies in the US alone, Petula Clark's "Downtown" was awarded a Gold record. The song, which had been recorded in four different languages, was a success in a dozen other countries and was inducted into The Grammy Hall Of Fame in 2003.

In 1966, Gene Clark of the Byrds announced he was leaving the group due to his chronic fear of flying. He had also had some problems getting along with Roger McGuinn.

In 1967, an L.A. garage band called the Seeds help to bring psychedelic music to American A.M. radio when their only hit, "Pushin' Too Hard" climbed into the US top 40.

In 1967, working at Abbey Road studios, London, the Beatles started recording a new John Lennon song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." Lennon's son, Julian, inspired the song with a nursery school drawing he called "Lucy — in the sky with diamonds." The picture, which was of a little girl with lots of stars, was his classmate - Lucy O’Donnell, who also lived in Weybridge, and attended the same school as Julian. Shortly after the song's release, speculation arose that the first letter of each of the title's nouns intentionally spelled LSD. Although Lennon denied this, the BBC banned the song. In a 2004 interview, Paul McCartney said that the song is about LSD, stating, "A song like 'Got to Get You Into My Life,' that's directly about pot, although everyone missed it at the time." "Day Tripper," he says, "that's one about acid. 'Lucy in the Sky,' that's pretty obvious. There's others that make subtle hints about drugs, but, you know, it's easy to overestimate the influence of drugs on the Beatles' music.

In 1969, in Miami, Doors frontman Jim Morrison was arrested on stage for allegedly exposing himself to the audience during the band's show at the Coconut Grove Auditorium. Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 27, 2012

DEAR JERRY: After dozens of times listening to and analyzing “I'm My Own Grandpa,” I'm throwing in the towel.

This includes many versions (Lonzo & Oscar; Grandpa Jones; Ray Stevens; etc.), but no matter who sings it, I just can't follow the crazy storyline and end up with the singer being his own grandfather.

Has anyone explained this mess in a way that's easy to understand?
—Lydia Locke, Atlanta

DEAR LYDIA: Apart from the lyrics, with their intrinsic complexities, I have never seen a simplified explanation.

So I'll give it a whirl.

Making things more difficult to follow are all of the added lyrics used to embellish and extend the story, and also to create rhyming verses.

However, since I am not singing it for you, I can temporarily disregard everything except the essential relationships. I'll revisit the remnants later.

To assist with the tracking, I'll assign familiar names to all of the participants, some of whom are blood relatives and others connected by marriage (no inbreeding).

Just call me Homer, and here's my extraordinary story:

When I met Marge, she was a widow with an adult daughter named Lisa. When we married, Lisa became my stepdaughter.

Lisa fancied older men and fell for my dad (Abe). Soon they were married, an event that led to some bizarre associations:

By being married to Lisa, my stepdaughter, Abe is now my new son-in-law.

Marrying my father (Abe) also makes Lisa (already my daughter) my new mother-in-law.

Marge, already my wife and Lisa's mother, is also now my grandmother (in-law). This is because Marge is the mother of Lisa, who is my father's wife and therefore my mother-in-law.

As the husband of my grandma Marge, I am now my own grandpa.

Reduced to a single sentence: Being married to his mother's mother makes a man his own grandfather.

Though the central plot is covered in these few lines, it would make for an unacceptably brief song.

To lengthen it to an appropriate running time, some other characters and events were added. They do not change the “I'm My Own Grandpa” outcome, though they do add considerably to the confusion for those trying to track the relationships.

Bringing them to life by using the same family names, here are those extra connections cited in the lyrics:

Marge and I have a child of our own, a boy named Bart, making Bart a brother-in-law to Abe, my son-in-law.

Bart being the brother of Lisa and her husband (Abe) also makes him my uncle (my father's brother-in-law).

Abe and Lisa then had a son (Nelson) who, as the child of my stepdaughter and son-in-law, is now my grandson. Nelson, the child of my father (Abe) and mother-in-law (Lisa), is also my new stepbrother.

Imagine the stress this family endures when trying to select an appropriate greeting card.

DEAR JERRY: I bought a CD of Polish music at a rummage sale, and one of the selections is titled “Dziec Pireusu.” It is sung in Polish, which I don't understand.

I was surprised, however, to find the tune is the same as the song we know here as “Never on Sunday.”

Is “Dziec Pireusu” the original recording, or did it come later?
—Ellen Bourget, South Milwaukee

DEAR ELLEN: The music known in the English-speaking countries as “Never on Sunday,” was written by Manos Hadjidakis, in his native Greek.

Originally titled “Ta Paidia tou Peiraia” (The Children of Piraeus), versions of this infectious tune quickly appeared in about 20 different languages.

In Polish, “Dziec Pireusu” means Piraeus Child, Piraeus being a municipality of Athens. Situated on the Eastern Mediterranean, the Port of Piraeus is the largest and busiest port in Greece.

In the U.S., Don Costa (His Orchestra & Chorus) had the instrumental hit, and the Chordettes (with Archie Bleyer & Orchestra) the vocal version (English lyrics written by Billy Towne).

Both Costa (1960) and the Chordettes (1961) turned “Never on Sunday” into Top 20 hits.

IZ ZAT SO? In the first 70 years (1934-2003) in which the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences presented an Award for Best Original Song, the only Oscar winner from a foreign-language film went, in 1961, to Manos Hadjidakis for “Ta Paidia tou Peiraia” (“Never on Sunday”).

Omnivore Recordings Announces Buck Owens & The Knack Record Store Day Releases

Omnivore Recordings has just announced two upcoming exclusive releases for Record Store Day. The Los Angeles-based record label will issue an original, limited edition, vintage 1970 Buck Owens coloring book coupled with a four-song flexi-disc, and digital download card, of rare live material from the legendary country music Hall of Famer and pioneer of the Bakersfield Sound. Additionally, Omnivore Recordings will issue a 10" authorized bootleg EP from 1978 featuring L.A. power pop group The Knack, a year before "My Sharona" made them an overnight success. Both Buck Owens and The Knack are vinyl only, limited edition releases exclusively for Record Store Day and available only at participating retailers on April 21.

The coloring books are of great historical significance. Commissioned by Buck Owens in 1970, these original, uncirculated vintage coloring books have been safely stored by Buck Owens Enterprises for over 40 years. Original copies are sought-after by collectors and they are now officially being made available to the public this spring, for the first time since 1970. Omnivore Recordings is hand coupling a limited edition of 2,500 original stock coloring books with a newly pressed flexi-disc that includes four rare live tracks. The story told in the coloring book culminates in Buck & The Buckaroos playing a concert with four of Buck's biggest hits "Act Naturally," "Together Again," "I've Got A Tiger By The Tail," and "Crying Time" specifically highlighted and named below the double-page spread (and you can color it in). The flexi-disc and digital download card included with this coloring book feature rare live versions of those exact songs, curated from Buck Owens & The Buckaroos historic performance at the White House for President Lyndon Johnson on September 9, 1968.

This collector's bundle features a red, white or blue flexi-disc, which is viewable from the outside of the package and contains all four of the above-mentioned songs. The album "Live At The White House," from which the tracks are drawn, was recorded in 1968 and issued almost exactly four years later on Sept. 5, 1972 and has never been reissued in any form. The set includes live versions of many Owens classics, and originally included Buck's studio version of "You Ain't Gonna Have Ol' Buck To Kick Around No More," a No. 13 hit for Owens that year -- reportedly inspired by a statement from Richard Nixon after losing the California Governor's race in 1962.

Omnivore will also issue The Knack's 'Live In Los Angeles 1978' just in time to soothe collector's pallettes. Culled from The Knack's late-frontman Doug Fieger's personal tape archive, Live In Los Angeles, 1978 captures The Knack at their pre-fame height, right before they would sign to Capitol and hit the big time. An authorized bootleg, this EP is being presented for the very first time as an historical document to the band and Los Angeles' late-'70s musical era. The Knack Live in Los Angeles, 1978 is limited to only 1,500 10" records on red/yellow splatter-colored vinyl.

Humble Pie Vinyl Reissues Coming Next Month

Three of Humble Pie‘s early 70's records will be reissued this spring via Lemon Records. The albums are their self-titled 1970 effort, 1973′s ‘Eat It’ and the 1975 double album ‘Thunderbox.’

According to the Second Disc, all three albums will be remastered and new liner notes that draw on interviews with the band members. When Small Faces frontman Steve Marriott left the Small Faces (late 1968) he joined Peter Frampton, Greg Ridley and Jerry Shirley to form Humble Pie, liberating himself from the pop expectations of his former group.

For their A&M debut Humble Pie, the band took an even heavier approach than that of an earlier effort. Peter Frampton’s gentle “Earth and Water Song” provides a respite from the band-composed “One Eyed Trouser Snake Rumba” and a cover of bluesman Willie Dixon’s “I’m Ready” proved that the band belonged in select company. Drummer Jerry Shirley took the lead vocal on his song “Only a Roach,” a country-and-western ode to a popular substance. Steve Marriott took a pointed jab at Andrew Loog Oldham, whose Immediate label went out of business in 1969, with “Theme from Skint (See You Later, Liquidator).” Humble Pie was not only the band’s first album for A&M but their first under the auspices of American manager Dee Anthony, a straight-talking Bronx native who, over the years, also counted among his clients Spooky Tooth, Traffic, Tony Bennett and Peter Allen! Lemon’s reissue comes with new artwork and sleeve notes by Malcolm Dome, and of course features the original album artwork by Aubrey Beardsley.

The 1973 double-LP Eat It featured a unique concept for each side. Side 1 features Steve Marriott- penned rock and roll; Side 2 offers classic R&B covers; Side 3 is a collection of Marriott’s acoustic songs; and Side 4 excerpts a live concert performance from Glasgow. Peter Frampton was gone by this point, having struck out on his own after 1971’s Rock On. With manager Anthony at his side, he would go on to even greater success as a solo performer. Dave “Clem” Clempson took Frampton’s place. Many of the covers on Eat It are choice: Ray Charles’ “ I Believe to My Soul,” the Rolling Stones’ “Honky Tonk Women” and mod favorite “(I’m A) Road Runner” among them. Lemon’s reissue of Eat It marks one of the first times the album has been released on CD outside of Japan, and in addition to remastered sound, it features new notes from Dome.

Finally, Lemon brings the follow-up to Eat It, Thunderbox. Twelve songs appear here, six of which were originals; the band again relied on cover versions as a major component. Here, Humble Pie takes on Ann Peebles’ soulful “I Can’t Stand the Rain,” Arthur Alexander’s “Anna (Go to Him)” and The Staple Singers’ “Oh La-De-Da.” A recent hit, Dobie Gray’s “Drift Away” (composed by Mentor Williams) is also given an airing. Thunderbox (the word noted by the label as “a seventeenth century slang word for the toilet which gives an example of Humble Pie’s sense of humour”) shows the band enjoying its boogie spirit, and as with Eat It, the album hasn’t been widely available outside of Japan. The remastered reissue features Dome’s new notes and the original artwork.

The reissues will arrive in the UK on March 27 and approximately one week later stateside.

“Every new record I start, a new aesthetic comes in. I can’t help it,” John said last month at a conference.

“I think it’s gonna be more organic, more natural lyrics and chords and artful simplicity,” he teased at the time, adding that the album would have “organic cowboy guitar sounds.”

others are passionate about our beloved vinyl!

Help Sunless Sea Records press our first vinyl record!

An Indie Rock project in Nampa, ID by Nathan Walker

About this project

With the recent launch of my new record label Sunless Sea Records I've determined that I want to be able to do as many physical, vinyl releases as possible. I've always been a huge vinyl fan; the sound, the smell, the bigger artwork. Now with the inclusion of free downloads that many people (including my label) are doing there's even more reasons to have your music purchases be exclusively vinyl. It's great for me to see the trend moving toward more records being pressed, and I'd love for my record label to be investing in that type of medium that you can pass down to your kids.

Pressing records is still slightly more expensive than CDs, and though I feel the benefits are definitely worth it, it takes some more upfront cash. I'd love for you to be able to show your interest and belief in
this infant label of mine by pledging to our Kickstarter project, while getting some really sweet incentives that I myself would love to have. Our goal is to be able to crowd fund the creation and pressing of our first vinyl record for the label. Though the exact artist that the vinyl to be created will, it most assuredly will be good- and something you'll want.

I am sincerely grateful for your contribution and for helping us get started on this journey.

Indie Music Keeps Vinyl Close to Heart

by Johnette Figueroa

Keeping Vinyl Alive
A young boy from Manville, NJ, dances around his room, listening to his very first vinyl record. “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go” by Wham, blares through his bedroom as he happily dances to the music.

Little does he know that his very first vinyl record would jump-start his passion for music and turn him into a musician one day.

Adam Copeland, guitarist and singer for Black Water, a local independent band in New Jersey, laughs as he remembers his early record collection.

“All the other “records” I owned were basically an early version of audiobooks on 7″ vinyl for Star Wars movies,” said Copeland. “I’d put it on my little cheap plastic turntable and dance around the room like an idiot. It’s probably because of that formative experience that I get so much joy out of playing vinyl.”

and in music history for february 29, 2012

James "Jimmy" Dorsey was born in 1904 (died June 12, 1957). Legendary jazz clarinetist, saxophonist, trumpeter, composer, and big band leader. He was known as "JD." He composed the jazz and pop standards "I'm Glad There Is You (In This World of Ordinary People)" and "It's The Dreamer In Me."

In 1964, the Hollies appeared on UK music show 'Thank Your Lucky Stars.'

In 1964, Betty Everett's rendition of "The Shoop Shoop Song" enters the Billboard chart, where it will peak at #6. The Shirelles' management team had turned the song down and Soul singer Merry Clayton's version, recorded as "It's in His Kiss" in 1963, failed to catch on.

Also in 1964, the Trashmen enter the American Top 40 with "Bird Dance Beat", a follow-up to their #4 hit, "Surfin' Bird". The song will top out at #30.

In 1980, Buddy Holly's glasses and the Big Bopper's wristwatch were found in old police files by the Mason City, Iowa sheriff. The men wore the items when their plane crashed near there on February 3, 1959. Holly's cuff links, worn during the crash, had already been presented to Paul McCartney in 1976 when the first Buddy Holly Week was held.

When the Beechcraft Bonanza carrying Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper crashed outside Clear Lake, Iowa, in the early morning hours of February 3, 1959, it struck the ground with such force that all three passengers were killed instantly, and the plane's wreckage was strewn across nearly 300 yards of snow-covered cornfields. The death certificate issued by the Cerro Gordo County Coroner noted the clothing Holly was wearing, the presence of a leather suitcase near his body and the following personal effects:

Notably missing from the list were Holly's signature eyeglasses, the most distinctive visual legacy of a man who influenced the sound and style of rock and roll immeasurably. Those famous glasses were presumed lost forever until the announcement on February 29, 1980, that they had resurfaced in Mason City, Iowa.

The glasses in question had the appearance of something government issued, but they were, in fact, carefully chosen as part of Holly's image—not by Holly himself, but by his Lubbock, Texas, optometrist, Dr. J. Davis Armistead. "Buddy was trying to wear the least conspicuous frames he could find," wrote Dr. Armistead nearly 40 years after writing Holly's last prescription. "Personally, I was not happy with the frame styles we had been using. I did not think they contributed anything to a distinct personality that a performer needs." It was while on vacation in Mexico City that Armistead found exactly the frames that he felt Holly needed. He brought back two pair of the heavy plastic Faiosa frames. "Those heavy black frames achieve exactly what we wanted—they became a distinct part of him." In fact, they became a part of the basic iconography and spirit of rock and roll. Before Buddy Holly, it would have been impossible to imagine a skinny, knock-need kid in an Ivy League suit and thick, heavy glasses being considered "cool." After Buddy Holly, the look and attitude that would later be called "geek chic" became a completely accepted alternative style for an aspiring rock star to embrace.

So how did the famous glasses re-emerge? In the violence of the crash back in February 1959, they were thrown clear of the other wreckage and buried in snow. They were found, along with the Big Bopper's watch, that same spring, when the melting snow made them visible again. Though they were handed in immediately to the Cerro Gordo County Sherriff's office, they sat filed away for the next 21 years in a sealed manila envelope marked "rec'd April 7, 1959." That envelope was opened by Sheriff Jerry Allen on this day in 1980. The glasses were eventually returned to Holly's widow, and can now be seen in the exhibit at the Buddy Holly Center in Lubbock, Texas.

The collection also spawned four Billboard Top Ten singles, "Heart and Soul" (#8), "I Want a New Drug" (#6), "The Heart of Rock & Roll" (#6) and "If This Is It" (#6).
