FEN Announce Release Dates for New Album, Of Losing Interest
Following up on 2010’s breakout album, Trails Out of Gloom, Fen return to their heavier roots with the brand new album, Of Losing Interest! Once again recorded at Creativ Studios with longtime producer, Mike Southworth at the helm, the band have crafted themselves an album that perfectly balances the technical virtuosity of heavy metal with the more down to earth tones of the early 90’s alternative rock movement. Of Losing Interest will be available on August 14th through Nail Distribution in North America, Code 7 in the UK, and Clearspot International in Europe.
"In some ways, Of Losing Interest is a reversion to the bands pre-Trails sound, but this new album is a definite progression for us," states Fen frontman, Doug Harrison, "the new album is a lot heavier than past albums, but it still has a ton of melody and, as a band, we’re took a more focused approach towards songcraft."
Of Losing Interest will be exclusively premiered on The Heavy Planet website in August so that all can get a sneak peek of the album that’s already turning heads!

Beatles Rare Cavern Club Poster Sells For $42,000
by: Karen 'Gilly' Laney
A Beatles double billed ‘on stage’ poster has sold for more money than most of us would pay to watch the Beatles play the double billed concert. Given all we know and love about the Fab Four, most of us would not be willing to drop 42 grand for a lunchtime concert ticket, let alone the poster that advertised it.

Decapitated "Organic Hallucinosis" Deluxe Gatefold LP - UK IMPORT

One of the most important bands in modern death metal, Decapitated were immediately hailed as re-igniting a stagnant death metal scene upon the release of their debut! This release is part of the ‘First Time on Vinyl’ campaign, plugging the gaps in the Earache catalogue previously unavailable on wax.
Disgarding the traditional conventions of Death Metal, Decapitated take the genre to a new plateau of invention on 'Organic Hallucinosis'. Progressive in the truest sense, every element is designed to challenge the blueprint in terms of production, arrangement and delivery. Disregarding those who feel the genre is stale, Decapitated's singular vision has found its focus in the most adventurous of ways, leaving the band as the only credible flagbearers for the modern Death Metal movement.

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne
FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 9, 2012
DEAR JERRY: I recently heard for the first time what apparently is one of Neil Diamond's first recordings, but this song is a duet with a female.
The title could be "Young Girl" (not the Gary Puckett hit), but that's merely a guess based on the words sung.
I didn't even know he dueted with anyone before Barbra Streisand and "You Don't Bring Me Flowers."
Where did this recording come from?
—Gary Blakely, Waukegan, Ill.
DEAR GARY: From a 1967 single, titled "Sand" (Reprise 0629). However, other than having a man who sounds a wee bit like Neil, I assure you Mr. Diamond had nothing to do with this tune. "Sand" is by Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra. Which is not to say Neil recorded strictly as a solo artist before his flowery duet with Streisand, in 1978.
About four years before anyone heard of Neil Diamond — 1966 and "Solitary Man" — he and a high school chum (Jack Parker) waxed four of his originals for Duel Records. Those came out in 1962 on two singles, both credited to Neil & Jack.
First came "You Are My Love at Last" backed with "What Will I Do" (Duel 508), then "I'm Afraid" and "Till You've Tried Love" (Duel 517).
Neither record charted, though Billboard did give Neil & Jack a tiny mention in their Record Reviews, along with a three-star rating for "I'm Afraid."
Their debut Duel disc is valued around $400, with the follow-up closer to $250.
DEAR JERRY: I remember hearing an incredibly strange (in a fun way) song on the radio. This was early in 1959, which I know because a couple of months later I graduated from high school.
I say strange because only a few lines are real words. One of the few is "of all the animals in the world, I'd rather be a bear." Most lyrics are nothing but mumbo-jumbo, making it impossible to get a title, and ultimately to find it.
It's not "I'd Rather Be a Bear," is it?
—Arlene Zachary, Prescott Valley, Ariz.
DEAR ARLENE: Nope, no Ursidaes in this title, that is unless one was named "Shombalor."
By Sheriff and the Ravels, "Shombalor" (Vee-Jay 306) is loaded with meaningless nonsense, similar to the more familiar "Rubber Biscuit," originally by the Chips (1956) and revived by the Blues Brothers (1979).
Coincidentally, neither of these '50s groups made another record. "Rubber Biscuit" and "Shombalor" are both coveted by doo-wop and R&B collectors, and often sell in the $50 to $100 range.
Co-written by E. Sheriff and actor/singer Aki Aleong, "Shombalor" did come out in early 1959, just as you recall.
In 1961, Aki Aleong became the first Top 40 (teen-oriented) singer on Frank Sinatra's Reprise label to have a hit. Aki charted, especially in Los Angeles, with his second single: "Trade Winds, Trade Winds" (Reprise 20,021).
Two years later, when surf music ruled, Aleong returned to Vee-Jay and produced their first surfing album, "Come Surf with Me," credited to Aki Aleong and the Nobels (Vee-Jay 1060).
Finding "Shombalor" on vinyl may not be easy, but it is on the 1993 CD, "A Taste of Doo Wop, Volume One" (Vee-Jay NVD2-709) — one of a three-disc, 75-track collection of R&B, most from the Vee-Jay vaults.
IZ ZAT SO? While researching stuff in 1959 on the "Shombalor" case, something on the Cash Box Top 50 for that year jumped out at me: the Fleetwoods have two entries: "Come Softly to Me" (No. 10) and "Mr. Blue" (No. 16).
More significant is that the Fleetwoods are the ONLY group with more than one record in Top 50 of 1959.
Even among solo performers, only five had more than one entry among the year's Top 50. Here are those five and their songs according to their 1959 year-end ranking:
1. "Mack the Knife" (Bobby Darin)
4. "Lonely Boy" (Paul Anka)
6. "Personality" (Lloyd Price)
8. "Put Your Head on My Shoulder" (Paul Anka)
11. "Stagger Lee" (Lloyd Price)
12. "Dream Lover" (Bobby Darin)
17. "(Now And Then There's) A Fool Such As I" (Elvis Presley)
19. "A Big Hunk O' Love" (Elvis Presley)
26. "I'm Gonna Get Married" (Lloyd Price)
33. "Lipstick on Your Collar" (Connie Francis)
43. "Frankie" (Connie Francis)

THE KENNEDYS RETURN WITH NEW ALBUM ON AUGUST 21, 2012
CLOSER THAN YOU KNOW IS DUO’S TWELFTH ALBUM
SEVERAL RECORD RELEASE SHOWS ANNOUNCED
"Byrdsy jangle, boy-girl harmonies…irresistible" -Rolling Stone
"Unabashed, hook-laden pop" -Village Voice
"More hooks than Marilyn Monroe’s closet" -Chicago Sun-Times
New York, N.Y. In a career that now spans two decades, New York duo Maura and Pete Kennedy have traversed a broad musical landscape, surveying power pop, acoustic songwriting, organic rock rooted in their early days in Austin, and a Byrds-inspired jangle that drew the attention of McGuinn, Steve Earle, and most notably Nanci Griffith. The duo co-produced Nanci’s latest CD, and are currently touring the US and the British Isles with the Texas songstress. Alan Harrison of Made in Newcastle said "Opening act, the Kennedys, had a nice line in Country-folk with a quaintly English edge to it and songs like When I go and The Midnight Ghost, won them plenty of new fans, as was witnessed by the long queue buying up their CD’s at the intermission."
On their new release, Closer Than You Know, out on August 21, 2012 via Burnside Distribution, The Kennedys strike out into new territory, this time inspired by a sojourn in Paris, where they immersed themselves in the turn of another century, the time when Debussy and Ravel were inventing the sonic palette of modern music. No strangers to reinvention, Pete and Maura came up with a cappuccino-fueled concept at a small café in Montmartre: music inspired by the Impressionist composers, married to the rock and pop sounds for which the duo have long been known. In the spirit of Paris-trained composer Burt Bacharach and his lyricist partner Hal David, Pete took on the task of creating musical landscapes that would cushion Maura’s lyrics and bell-like harmonies. The songs have a quality, inherent in Maura’s voice, that is both soothing and urgent. As writers and producers, the Kennedys continue to mature, from their early style-conscious pop to today’s burnished sheen. Always tuned to their own muse, Pete and Maura have once again come up with a unique sound that is as uplifting as it is unclassifiable. The Kennedys will be in the UK touring with Nanci Griffith again this summer, and will be doing several U.S. shows celebrating the release of Closer Than You Know .

Iron Maiden Guitarist Solo Album Coming?
Iron Maiden guitarist Adrian Smith says he's considering releasing the instrumental album. In an interview with Braveword, the guitarist stated that the album - a collaboration with a keyboard player - was a lot of fun to record, and may possibly be released someday. However, for right now, his focus is divided between Iron Maiden and his new band, Primal Rock Rebellion, which snowballed from two song demos with SikTh singer Mikee Goodman into an entire album.
"It has a life of its own," Smith said of his side band. "I ended up writing with [Goodman], but I didn’t know that it was going to turn into an album. If anything, it was more his solo album to start with me producing and writing, but then it became more of a joint project. It just sort of grew really."

CVI by Royal Thunder
Royal Thunder’s debut full length ‘CVI’ (roman numeral 106) explodes in sound in a way that their critically heralded debut EP only hinted at. Propelled by singer Mlny Parsonz’ captivatingly passionate and soulful vocals, ‘CVI’ is a psych/prog/metal fan’s dream come true---a triumphant display of crescendo-ing riffs, sultry vocals and propulsive grooves. Way way more than just a brilliant metal album, ‘CVI’ is a sultry southern hard rock thinker of an album that appeals to both the Skynyrd and the Neurosis sides of the brain. An absolute must have for fans of the Atlanta and Savannah metal and hard rock scenes! (released 22 May 2012 Relapse Records)

Half Blood by Horseback
Horseback’s young but varied catalog has been remarkable in its ability to capture distinctly different subgenres of heavy music with impressive virtuosity: drone, doom, black-metal, psychedelia, post-rock, noise etc etc. With ‘Half Blood’, Horseback’s first true ‘new release’ for Relapse, the band’s mastermind Jenks Miller has brilliantly managed to throw all of those styles into one seamless album. ‘Half Blood’ naturally shifts from Americana twang to fiercely evil buzzing guitars to hypnotically meditative kraut-drone with a level of confidence that takes other bands years to master. Horseback’s ‘Half Blood’ is Neurosis on a Neil Young overdose, Earth after being locked in a room with Merzbow for weeks straight. This is an album at once immediately captivating as well as rewarding for those who treasure music that reveals new twists and turns with repeated listens. (released 08 May 2012 Relapse Records)

Deep Cuts From Dark Clouds by 16
Southern California’s godfathers of bum-out 16 return with another masterpiece of bleakness on ‘Deep Cuts From Dark Clouds’. 16 maintain their position atop the mountain of sludge-metal. What has always set 16 apart from their doom and sludge contemporaries has been their ability to set the utter bleakness of singer Cris Jerue’s lyrics to undeniably catchy and heavy riffs and grooves, and ‘Deep Cuts From Dark Clouds’ finds the band absolutely perfecting this already addictive combo. Never has extreme depression and despair sounded so good! (released 24 April 2012 Relapse Records)

Vinyl Reissue ‘History of the Grateful Dead Vol. 1 (Bear’s Choice)’
Audio Fidelity has announced a July 10th release date for the reissue, which will be pressed on 180-gram virgin vinyl and issued in a numbered limited edition.
"This is what The Grateful Dead sounded like at the close of the 1960's and the dawn of the 1970's."
History of the Grateful Dead, Volume One (Bear's Choice) consists of selections from two magnificent moments in the band's history, February 13-14, 1970 at the Fillmore East in New York City at a time they were still making the transition from acidic to countrified music and their live performances included tunes from every corner of the American pop songbook.
This 1973 release is the ninth album and the fourth live album by Grateful Dead and was compiled as a tribute to Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, the band's original keyboard player and blues aficionado, who died while the album was being prepared. The "Bear" of the title is Owsley Stanley, underground chemist turned Dead sound man. The album was recorded and produced by Stanley, and fans often simply refer to the album as "Bear's Choice".
The set consists of seven songs, six of them covers, the first five songs are stripped down acoustic numbers with a nice bluesy feel to them. The album's sole original composition, Jerry Garcia's, "Black Peter," is a masterfully executed beautiful tune that ends Side One. This second half of the record belongs to Pigpen and these last two tracks are stunning electric offerings - a 20-minute, crazy old truckin' blues cover of Howlin' Wolf's "Smokestack Lightnin'," and Otis Redding's "Hard to Handle" is a classic Dead hustling shuffle - Garcia is at his best, the vocal cooks and the band is tight and quick weaving their collective R&B-influenced psychedelia.
The record peaked at #60 on the Billboard 200 - it is perhaps the Dead's most rustic album. The band sounds genuinely informal, with impromptu stage chatter adding to the low-key ambiance...just like a bunch of guys hanging out and making great music.

Ten Years After 'A Space in Time' Vinyl Reissue
"...a tremendous guitar record....a mix of acoustic and electric guitar lines - It ROCKS!"
An appearance on the final night at Woodstock only reinforced the status of Ten Years After as one of Britain's premiere blues rock bands and they were at the height of their powers in 1971 when they released "A Space in Time". The record includes their classic rock hit, "I'd Love to Change the World" - with guitar riffs that must be included among the greatest in Rock'n'Roll history - the album went on to be their all-time best seller.
Guitarist and vocalist Alvin Lee provides exceptional blues leads and the majority of the songwritingalong with band mates, Chick Churchill on keyboards, Leo Lyons, bass and drummer, Ric Lee. "A Space in Time" is a mature work, more restrained than the band's previous albums primarily because of the liberal use of tasty acoustic guitar and plenty of sound effects and studio tricks that complement the overall texture...and it really works. There's still Alvin Lee's lightning quick blues licks, but he also knew how to slow it down on the quieter tracks as well as write some powerfull tunes ranging from the folky "Here They Come" to the Chuck Berry-influenced, "Baby Won’t You Let Me Rock and Roll You" and "Let the Sky Fall" is a standout track with psychedelic vocals reminiscent of Jimi Henrix.
Alvin Lee has said "A Space in Time" is his favorite album...some would call it a masterpiece of rock.

Bryan Adams 'Waking Up the Neighbours' Vinyl Reissue
"...a classic album filled with old-fashioned, good time rock & roll"
Bryan Adams' sixth studio album, 1991's, Waking Up the Neighbours is filled with big rockers, solid rhythms, and unique songwriting. The nearly 75 minute two-record set is loaded with showstopping arena rockers and mid-tempo ballads including five hit singles. The most notable track is the Robin Hood Prince of Thieves theme "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You" which spent seven weeks atop the US pop charts. The song was also a phenomenon in Europe, becoming Bryans' biggest hit ever topping the charts in 16 countries and selling about 10 million copies worldwide and is one of the biggest selling singles of all time. The song was nominated for an Academy Award and won a Grammy Award in 1992 for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture or Television.

Adams co-produced the album with Robert "Mutt" Lange previously known for his work with AC/DC, Foreigner and Def Leppard.
Audio Fidelity is proud to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Waking Up the Neighbours and to honor Bryan Adams who has sold more than 65 million albums worldwide, toured six continents, garnered 21 top 10 hits, earned nominations for three Academy Awards and five Golden Globes, received 18 Juno Awards, an American Music Award, and five ASCAP Film and Television Music Awards for Most Performed Song from a Motion Picture - his music has appeared on more than 40 movie soundtracks.

Case Vinyl EP
We're very pleased to be releasing four brand new songs on this EP by the recently reformed CASE. Following on from their compilation album from last year which brought together all their original early recordings. It's limited to 500 copies on white vinyl.
CASE formed in Croydon in 1979 after being introduced to each other by Slimy Toad from Johnny Moped. Case played the pubs of south London and finally released their one and only 7", the ‘Wheat From The Chaff’ EP in 1983, it reached the top of the independent charts and led to them being played heavily on BBC radio including plays by John Peel, Janice Long & Kid Jensen.
Originally, in 1980, CASE played primarily at a (fairly rough) pub in North Croydon, called "The Star" and built quite a following there before larger, occasionally more salubrious, venues beckoned. They famously played at The Rainbow in November 1981 - where smoke flares and buckets of maggots flew into the crowd as the band played, the Marquee Club (where they were banned for playing an encore – the only band to be banned for this since the Rolling Stones), Hammersmith Palais, 100 Club, the BBC Paris Theatre, ICA, & the Woolwich Tram Shed (and Chislehurst Caves!) amongst other less-prestigious venues.
With better management who knows where CASE may have ended up – as it is - they retain a legendary status among the legions of punk/ska fans...and graffiti historians.
Back in 1981 case had a vociferous and die-hard following who, in substantial numbers, took to daubing the walls with graffiti championing their support for the band. These expressions of support for the band are now the stuff of social commentary – see, for example, the New Cross item at transpont.blogspot.com.
Something about CASE seemed to attract fanatical fans, several claiming to have seen every gig, since the early days in Croydon, and one in particular who, whilst working in London, spent his lunchtimes visiting public toilets all over the city - unrolling the rolls of toilet paper and writing CASE on each sheet on the roll, with a biro, before rolling them up again. These were strange times.

Def Leppard Set To Re-Record Back Catalogue
Def Leppard have said that they plan to re-record their entire back catalogue. The rockers are making this extrordinary move following a disagreement with their one time record label Universal over royalties and compensation for digital downloads. The band's frontman Joe Elliott told Billboard that the disagreement has led to the band deciding to phase out their recordings for Universal and replace them with a whole new collection of their songs, which they're calling 'forgeries'. "We'll just replace our back catalogue with brand new, exact same versions of what we did," he said.
In order to coincide with the release of the movie Rock of Ages, the band have already re-recorded their 1983 song "Rock of Ages" and 1987's "Pour Some Sugar on Me."

RAZOR & TIE ANNOUNCES RE-ISSUES OF LEGENDARY PROG ROCKERS EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER'S DEBUT ALBUM TARKUS.
BOTH ALBUMS AVAILABLE AS 3-DISC DELUXE SETS ON SEPTEMBER 11
Albums To Include New 5.1 And Stereo Mixes
Both Albums To Be Released On Limited Edition 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl
(New York, NY) - Razor & Tie is set to release the first two Emerson, Lake & Palmer re-issues of the band's first two albums: Emerson, Lake & Palmer (1970 - Studio Album) and Tarkus (1971 - Studio Album) on September 11th. Both records will be available as 3-disc deluxe editions containing never before released 5.1 Surround Sound and Stereo Mixes, including previously unheard out-takes. Three time Grammy-nominated producer and engineer Steven Wilson (who has also recently remixed classic albums by Jethro Tull and King Crimson for acclaimed 40th anniversary editions) worked from the original Greg Lake produced multi-track tapes to remix both albums.
Fans can also purchase Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Tarkus deluxe editions at elp.merchnow.com where the albums will be bundled with a variety of ELP t-shirts perfect for any collector. Pre-orders are available now for the deluxe albums, vinyl re-presses and a selection of Emerson, Lake & Palmer t-shirts.
Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Tarkus will also be released on limited edition 180 gram audiophile vinyl. The records will be re-pressed and released with their original packaging and track listings. The vinyl re-presses will be available September 11th as well.
Both albums will also be digitally, specifically mastered for iTunes by Grammy-award winning engineer Brad Blackwood (Alison Krauss & Union Station, Maroon 5, North Mississippi Allstars, Saving Abel).
AXS TV will also exclusively premiere the Emerson, Lake & Palmer 40th Anniversary concert this August. The legendary Rock Band reunited to celebrate their 40th Anniversary and headlined London's first High Voltage Rock Festival. This was the historic moment when Emerson Lake and Palmer performed for the first time since 1998. This spectacular performance with extravagant special effects and lighting recaptured the magic and musical genius of Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer as they performed their greatest hits in front of thousands of fans and leaving a lasting memory of the stunning musicianship of these three legendary performers.
Razor & Tie's full catalogue re-issue campaign will continue with the release of newly expanded, re-mastered, editions of four additional ELP classic albums: Pictures At An Art Exhibition (1971- Live Album), Trilogy (1972- Studio Album), Brain Salad Surgery (1973- Studio Album), and Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends - Ladies & Gentlemen (1974- Live Album).
Considered by many to be one of rock's original first super-groups, Emerson Lake & Palmer formed in England in 1970 consisting of Keith Emerson (keyboards), Greg Lake (bass guitar, vocals, guitar) and Carl Palmer (drums, percussion). The band created a brand new world of music, combining classical and symphonic rock fused with beautiful vocals. Their penchant for appropriating themes from classical music and the group's more nuanced, textured approach to symphonic arrangements set ELP apart from their more bombastic guitar-based contemporaries of the time. This subtler and more sublime approach carries on today in the expansive atmospherics of Radiohead and Muse and also in the prog-influenced sphere of band's like Porcupine Tree, Dream Theatre, Opeth and many others, making ELP one of the more relevant torchbearers of the progressive rock sound. Along with Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, and Rush, Emerson Lake and Palmer ushered in the Prog era and as one of the most commercially successful rock bands of the 1970's having sold over 40 million albums. ELP's dramatic flair, sincere passion, labyrinthine song structures, and symphony-worthy virtuosity proved that classical rockers could compete for arena-scale audiences as the band headlined stadium tours around the world.
