Vinyl Record News, Today In Music History & Music Notes

Green Day Box Set Coming

The collection treads the band's journey from their 1990 debut, '1,039/ Smoothed Out Slappy Hours', through 'Kerplunk' (1992), 'Dookie' (1994), 'Insomniac' (1995) 'Nimrod' (1997), 'Warning' (2000), and 'American Idiot' (2004), to 2009's '21st Century Breakdown.'

The set features each album in an individual CD paper-sleeve with original artwork, housed in a clamshell box. All eight albums are neatly packaged together in one place, giving the listener a sharp, sizzling slice of punk rock history and an in-depth look at the band's evolution.

Green Day's 19-track debut, '1,039/ Smoothed Out Slappy Hours,' traces their beginnings in the East Bay underground punk scene. The album is a compilation of three separate long plays: 39/ Smooth, Slappy, and 1,000 Hours. Time spent in the studio was particularly true to punk's short and fast form, with the sleeve notes stating that the album was "recorded in twenty-two hours"!

'Kerplunk' followed in 1992, and included an early version of "Welcome To Paradise," which was later re-recorded for 'Dookie 'and released as a single. 'Kerplunk' would also be was the band's last release for the independent label Lookout!. Propelled by incessant touring and word of mouth, the band's popularity increased rapidly, and they eventually signed with Reprise and began preparing for their major-label debut.

'Dooki'e was released in February 1994 and catapulted the band into music's mainstream with the massive hits "Longview," "Basket Case," and "When I Come Around." The album, which began Green Day's longstanding relationship with producer Rob Cavallo, went on to sell over 15 million copies worldwide and earned the band its first Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. Green Day had officially arrived.

Only 18 months later, the highly anticipated 'Insomniac' followed. Singles "Geek Stink Breath," "Brainstew/Jaded," and "Walking Contradiction" sat wedged in heavy rotation on MTV, and the album remains the band's third best-selling record after 'Dookie' and 'American Idiot.'

Testament to the group's ferocious artistic output, they continued with their two-year album cycle and delivered 'Nimrod' in fall of 1997. 'Nimrod 'featured the acoustic single "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)," which has gone on to be one of the band's most beloved songs. Live favorites "Hitchin A Ride" and "Nice Guys Finish Last" are also included.

'Warning' saw Green Day experiment with their sound, bringing a more acoustic layering to many of the album's tracks, including the stomping, sing-along "Minority," the swinging "Waiting," and the reflective "Macy's Day Parade."

Four years later the band released their seminal rock opera 'American Idiot' to massive commercial success and critical acclaim. The album debuted at #1 on the Billboard chart, produced five hit singles, earned seven Grammy nominations (winning two, including Best Rock Album), and even spawned a hit Broadway musical. Ten years after the release of their breakthrough 'Dookie,' Green Day had changed popular music's landscape all over again.

Following the success of 'American Idiot,' expectations were high for the 2009 release of '21st Century Breakdown' and Green Day did not disappoint. The album reached the #1 spot in over 15 countries worldwide and picked up a 2010 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album on the success of hit songs "Know Your Enemy" and "21 Guns."

Green Day is currently preparing for the release of their trilogy of new albums - 'Green Day ¡Uno!,' 'Green Day ¡Dos!,' and 'Green Day ¡TrĂ©!' - on September 25th, 2012; November 13th, 2012, and January 15th, 2013, respectively.

ZZ Top Reveal Album Cover Art/Tracklist for New LP

Iconic blues rockers ZZ Top are scheduled to release a new album called ‘La Futura’ on Sept. 11th via American Recordings.

ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons produced the album alongside Rick Rubin. The Texas-based trio, who are currently celebrating 42 years with the same lineup of Gibbons, bassist/vocalist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard, returned to their roots for the new tracks, but with a new twist.

"We thought long and hard about what this album should be," Gibbons says in a press release. "We wanted to recall the directness of our early stuff but not turn our backs on contemporary technology. The result of this melding of the past and the present is, of course, ‘La Futura.’"

In a new interview with Classic Rock magazine, Billy F Gibbons says of La Futura: "The band is constantly attempting to expand the elegance of the simple trio for bigger effect. The steady and stalwart sides of the sound – focus and ferocity – remain constant. It’s the addition of fuzz and frazz that builds it up. We’re still just three guys drawing on anything and everything to make it snap."

Tracklist:
"I Gotsta Get Paid"
"Chartreuse"
"Consumption"
"Over You"
"Heartache in Blue"
"I Don’t Wanna Lose Lose You"
"Flyin High"
"It’s Too Easy Manana"
"Big Shiny Nine"
"Have a Little Mercy"

Grateful Dead: Spring 1990

And now for something a little different. This year's box set - Grateful Dead: Spring 1990 - offers six complete shows from the epic spring '90 tour, one concert from each city the band played, personally selected by Dead vaultmeister and archival release producer David Lemieux. The sizzling six are: 3/16/90 Capital Centre (Landover , MD), 3/19/90 Hartford Civic Center, 3/22/90 Copps Coliseum (Hamilton, Ontario), 3/26/90 Knickerbocker Arena (Albany, NY), 3/30/90 Nassau Coliseum (Uniondale, NY) and 4/2/90 The Omni (Atlanta, GA).

In his "Producer's Note" in the beautiful book that is part of the box, Lemieux, who attended the first 10 shows on the tour, states, "To my ears this was the last tour that was consistently great, where every show is excellent, not a dud in the bunch." And Grateful Dead historian Dennis McNally's comprehensive and informative insider's essay in the box is titled "The Last Great Dead Tour." These guys know what they're talking about!

Besides the discs themselves, Grateful Dead: Spring 1990 has much to offer, including: a gorgeous 60-page hardcover book containing copious color photos by Jim Anderson and Michael Laurentus, unique artwork by Brooklyn-based fine artist Wes Lang, fascinating business letters and communications related to the tour, a detailed historical essay by Dennis McNally, a Producer's Note by David Lemieux and individual show descriptions by Blair Jackson; a reproduction of the Dead's 1990 tour program (printed and sold later in '90, for the fall and Europe '90 tours); tickets and backstage passes of all six shows; a band publicity photo from 1990 by Ken Friedman; Dennis McNally's tour laminate; and reproductions of the colored 8x10 sheets GDTS sent out with hotel, food and other information for each city on the tour.

With recordings made by longtime Grateful Dead recordist and producer John Cutler, mastered by Jeffrey Norman in HDCD, you just know it's gonna sound great - and it does!

The definitive Gary Lewis & the Playboys collection is back! This 45-track anthology came and went in a heartbeat a few years ago; the critical and commercial response was so good (and continues to be—used copies sell for megabucks online) that we decided to reissue it. It’s still the ideal way to explore the recordings of one of the great singles bands of the ‘60s, featuring the A and B-side of every single they issued on the Liberty label. Many of these original mono singles mixes and most of the B-sides were completely unavailable until this collection came along, and remember, these are the mixes you heard come cracklin’ out of your radio back in the day. The annotation by Ed Osborne features interviews with producers Bones Howe and Snuff Garrett, drummers Hal Blaine and Jim Keltner, singer (and Gary’s "ghost" voice) Ron Hicklin and even Mr. Lewis himself. Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 30, 2012

DEAR JERRY: If it isn't to much trouble, I think collectors of soundtracks and stage cast records would love to see a list of what are currently the world's most valuable ones. I know I would.

How many can you come up with that have an estimated near-mint worth in the neighborhood of $1,000 or more?
 —Fred Bozeman, Los Angeles

DEAR FRED: Let's put it this way. I came up with enough pricey soundtracks and casts to fill more than just one column, especially with the competition being worldwide and open to all sizes and speeds.

So let's get started with 23 records, each of which in near-mint condition is "worth in the neighborhood of $1,000."

Because all of these are quite close, pricewise, they are shown alphabetically by title.

Next week the second batch will be listed from the lowest ($1,200) to the highest.

The format is as follows:

TITLE - Type of recording (Year issued) - Label name and number (Country where manufactured) Description or additional notes, if any Artist(s) on the disc. Muse Reveal Album Cover Art For New Release

Muse have recently revealed the album cover art for their new release (the band's sixth studio album) called 'The 2nd Law.'   The image is a photograph of the human brain taken from the Human Connectome Project, a project set up to highlight the pathways of the brain by illustrating them with different luminous colors.

The band have promised that it will be 'very diverse' with Matt Bellamy also adding: "We've tried a bunch of new things, which the trailer gives a glimpse of. There's only one song that's like that. We've basically tried to do what Rage Against The Machine did with hip-hop in the 1990s and take a bit of the electronic world and dubstep and play it with real instruments. There's only one track like that, the rest of it is very, very diverse."

LAND OBSERVATIONS ~ DEBUT ALBUM - ROMAN ROADS IV – XI

RELEASE DATE:  SEPTEMBER 4th, 2012

Mute are pleased to announce the signing of Land Observations, and news of the debut release, Roman Roads IV - XI, out on September 4th, 2012.

Land Observations is the solo project of James Brooks, which debuted at the Short Circuit, presents Mute Festival at the Roundhouse in May 2011.

Brooks’ previous band, Appliance, released four critically acclaimed albums on Mute before disbanding. Since then, Brooks has developed his visual and audio art with various shows across the UK, North America and Europe (his current exhibition, The Information Exchange, is at Domobaal, London, WC1 until August 2012).

Throughout, music has remained a constant, with Brooks now connecting his conceptual approaches to instrumental musical compositions.

Attempts to develop a new project alongside the visual art meant that Brooks did a lot of home recording at his flat in Hackney, East London.

Land Observations, developed out of an interest in the former Roman roads that lay just a short walk from his front door - roads of communication and conquest that stretch from the old City of London and out across parts of Britain, Europe and beyond.

Land Observations witnesses Brooks exploring the power of minimalism via layered, repetitive electric VI string guitar – creating warm, evocative instrumentals.

Although Brooks spent considerable time researching Roman Roads-, with each of the compositions responding to the psychogeography of an individual road - this is not just a historical project, or an attempt to look only into the past. There is an obvious fascination with Roman Roads as man made structures, with their bold lines carving through the landscape, creating an album that's a reflection on the broader ideas of travel, momentum and progress.

Roman Roads IV - XI is released on Mute on CD, vinyl and download, with packaging featuring original drawings by Brooks.

The album was recorded at the Bridge and Tunnel Mobile, Berlin and engineered and mixed by Mark Bihler and James Brooks.

SUN is the new studio album from Cat Power. Six years after her last album of original material, Chan Marshall has moved on from her collaborative forays into Memphis soul and Delta blues. She wrote, played, recorded and produced the entirety of SUN by herself, a statement of complete control that is echoed in the songs’ themes.

The music on SUN employs a sweeping stylistic palette: There’s the classic Cat Power haunting guitar and provocative vocal hook in “Cherokee” (“marry me to the sky… bury me upside down”); the irresistible Latin-sounding nine-piano loop of “Ruin”; upbeat, almost dancey electronic anthems like “Real Life” and “3,6,9”; and the stirring, 8-minute epic “Nothin But Time,” featuring a vocal cameo by Iggy Pop. The swagger of “Silent Machine” brings to mind mid-70s Jagger, contrasted with the unusual, sparse production of “Always on My Own.”

The narrative arc of the record is deeply American in its spaciousness and optimism, but the music itself is defiantly modern and global.

Mixed by Philippe Zdar (Cassius, Chromeo, Phoenix).

Pre-orders of the double LP are available here.

Metallica will enter the studio in September to begin the follow up to 2008's 'Death Magnetic' album. It will be recorded by Rick Rubin.

"Every time [singer] James Hetfield picks up a guitar, there are some brilliant riffs that come out of it, and I try to make sure that they are all recorded and try to do my best to keep up with them and try to put some drums behind them," drummer Lars Ulrich said. "So there are, obviously, tons of ideas sitting around waiting to be had at in terms of turning ideas of James' into songs."

news from CandlelightRecords

DAYLIGHT DIES: New Album Confirmed For October 9th Release

Candlelight Records today confirms October 9 as the North American release date for Daylight Dies’ new album, A Frail Becoming. Mixed by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios (Opeth, Katatonia, Devin Townsend), the album features photography from award-winning Jonathan Mehring and packaging design by Agni Kaster. The release of A Frail Becoming silences a nearly four-year writing gap from the quintet.

"A Frail Becoming is an album which, at many times during its creation, felt as if it may never be realized," states drummer Jesse Haff. "As each of our lives proceeded down different paths, the challenges and obstacles we faced felt daunting and at times impassible. Out of this struggle we forged ahead, determined to write the best collection of music we’ve ever created. Thankfully our perseverance prevailed and A Frail Becoming stands as the most accomplished and varied album of our career."

Recording of A Frail Becoming commenced late 2011. Bassist/vocalist Egan O’Rourke coordinated capturing individual performances of Haff, guitarists Barre Gambling and Charley Shackelford, and vocalist Nathan Ellis. By year’s end, the raw tracks were ready for Bogren’s impressive and critical touches. Haff notes, "While still sounding distinctly Daylight Dies, each songs stands independently on its own, uncompromisingly representing a reflection of the moment in time they were each born in. Expect beautiful and haunting guitar-driven dark metal, enveloped by a wall of rhythms and textures one minute, and deeply expressive guitar leads, solos and acoustic passages the next."

Formed in Asheville, North Carolina circa 1996, Daylight Dies found an immediate and continually growing fanbase starting with the release of their debut EP Idle (2000). Decibel Magazine describes the band’s musical offering as, "a lot like spinning Anathema’s The Silent Enigma, Katatonia’s Discouraged Ones and The Cure’s Pornography at the same time." Blabbermouth notes, "their switch from harsh and anguished vocals to airy, Opeth-esque clean vocal works magnificently to grab the listener’s attention and give one pause for reflection on the beauty within." After releasing one album for Relapse Records (No Reply, 2002), Daylight Dies signed to England’s Candlelight Records in late 2005. The band has since released two acclaimed recordings (Dismantling Devotion, Lost To The Living), performed with labelmates Emperor to two capacity New York City shows, toured North America twice (alongside Moonspell and Katatonia 2006 and direct support to Candlemass 2008), and now ready for the autumn release and anticipated early 2013 tour.

Track List:
1. Infidel
2. The Pale Approach
3. Sunset
4. Dreaming of Breathing
5. A Final Vestige
6. Ghosting
7. Hold On To Nothing
8. Water’s Edge
9. An Heir to Emptiness

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 23, 2012

DEAR JERRY: I finally got to see "Backbeat," a film about the Beatles in the years before they became known beyond Hamburg and Liverpool.

It is especially hard to realize that it took two years before Americans knew what was going on in Europe.

Or was there perhaps some publicity here in 1962 and '63 that has been forgotten?
—Ric Fairchild, Brooklyn, N.Y.

DEAR RIC: Buckle up, our time machine is going to revisit some key dates and events leading up to Beatlemania:

October 5, 1962: Their first record as the Beatles, "Love Me Do" and "P.S. I Love You" (Parlophone 4949), is issued in the UK. Though the single topped the "Mersey Beat" survey, that is a regional publication, one heavily influenced by the Liverpool scene, as stated by their masthead: "The North's Own Entertainments (sic) Paper."

It would, however, be another six months before the popularity of the Beatles throughout Britain would catch up with their accomplishments on the Merseyside.

This is evidenced by the success, and lack of it, of their debut record.

Reaching No. 1 on Mersey Beat didn't help "Love Me Do" much on the national level. It entered the NME (New Musical Express) Top 30 at No. 27, on October 27th, only to drop completely off the chart after just one week.

November 24, 1962: The Great Britain portion of Cash Box's International Section carries this tiny blurb, yet one of historical significance: "A&R manager George Martin sees a bright future of The Beatles — a new vocal instrumental group making their debut on the Parlophone label with their own composition "Love Me Do."

Since Cash Box does not quote Martin as the source of this comment, it may have been gleaned from an October press release. (Thanks to Cash Box archivist Randy Price for providing this page.)

Regardless, this single sentence stands as the first mention of "The Beatles" in any U.S. publication — 14 months before America heard "I Want to Hold Your Hand."

Coincidentally, the topic directly below on this page is a mention of Mr. Acker Bilk's recent trip to America, and his new U.S. release, "Limelight." As you will see, Bilk and the Beatles are destined to cross paths again soon.

January 11, 1963: "Please Please Me" and "Ask Me Why," the second Beatles single (Parlophone 4983), is issued, to very favorable reviews.

January 13, 1963: Two days later, the boys made the 100 mile journey from Liverpool to Birmingham, for their first of 12 appearances on ABC-TV's "Thank Your Lucky Stars." Of course they sang the newly-released "Please Please Me."

The show was filmed on Sunday, before a live audience, then broadcast the following Saturday (Feb. 19).

The Beatles were just one act on the schedule, and a group with only one briefly-charted single to their credit ("Love Me Do"), and the still unknown follow-up ("Please Please Me").

Headlining the show, and the one act on the bill with an international smash and million-seller on the resume, was clarinetist Acker Bilk. One year earlier, his "Stranger on the Shore" reached No. 1 in the U.S., UK, and several other countries.

Highlighting the evening was a presentation to Bilk of three trophy-like awards, based on Billboard's 1962 European dee jay poll.

Thankfully, someone snapped a photo of Mr. Acker Bilk on stage, flanked by Billboard's European Director, Art Rosett; local dee jay, Sam Costa; and TYLS host, Brian Matthew.

Also gathered around, admiring Bilk's awards, are seven other guests on the show: Mike Berry; Brook Brothers; Frankie Vaughan; Chris Barber; Alma Cogan; and "John Lennon of the Beatles."

The photo made its way to Billboard in New York, and ran in the Feb. 2nd issue, prominently placed at the top of page four, but only with a caption identifying each person. There is neither a story nor any accompanying text.

Other than a U.S. reader's interest being piqued by Bilk's success in a poll of British dee jays, it is likely very few here paid much attention to a small gathering in Birmingham of folks whose names they did not recognize.

At the time, no one could have imagined the degree of importance of this uncredited photo.

It is the first photograph of any of the Beatles found in a stateside publication.

Their next mention is in the Feb. 16th issue, among the latest music tidbits from Britain, part of the weekly International News Reports: "In a deal with EMI, Vee-Jay will release records made by the Beatles (Parlophone), a promising British vocal-instrumental group that has yet to make a large chart impact here [in the UK]."

Beginning two weeks later, the Beatles regularly appeared in the Hits of the World section, but without photos or commentary. Just titles and artists on the weekly charts from selected countries.

In conclusion, applying 21st century know-how to 50-year-old events can be misleading. In 1962, no one in those seamy Merseyside and Hamburg clubs even had hand-held audio recorders, much less Flip Video capability, and most importantly, the internet.

Still, I can't help but wonder how the Beatles would have fared as contestants on Britain's Got Talent.

IZ ZAT SO? Well documented is how Vee-Jay misspelled the group's name on the first Beatles record issued in the U.S.

First pressings of "Please Please Me" and "Ask Me Why" (VJ 498) credit THE BEATTLES, on both the promotional and commercial labels.

What is not quite so well known is this was not simply a typo. They also used two Ts on their press releases, new release reports, and even in professionally prepared display ads placed in the trades.

If the company knew this record would, in 2012, fetch from $2,000 to $6,000, they would have set a few boxes aside.
