Originally formed in Long Island as Soft White Underbelly in 1967, Blue Oyster Cult combined adventurous lyrical themes with an aggressive instrumental sound. With passion and intelligence on display in equal measure, Blue Oyster Cult became the thinking fan's rock band and a sign of life in a sea of dull, anemic soft-pop. Anthems like "Godzilla," "Harvester of Eyes" and "Don't Fear the Reaper" stretched the boundaries of rock topics while lead guitarist Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser became a hero to legions of budding axe-wielders. The band's mystique extended to their album artwork, resulting in some of the most distinctive and iconic LP covers of the rock era. Blue Oyster Cult - The Columbia Albums Collection gathers the essential pieces of the Blue Oyster Cult story into one mind-boggling totality.

GARY MOORE TO RELEASE HENDRIX TRIBUTE

Eagle Rock Entertainment has recently announced the September 25th release of the Gary Moore CD, DVD and Blu-ray title 'Blues For Jimi.'

This release captures a unique concert featuring Moore playing Jimi Hendrix tracks, including such classics as “Purple Haze,” “Foxy Lady,” “The Wind Cries Mary,” “Hey Joe,” “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)”
and many more. Filmed at the London Hippodrome on October 25, 2007, it was part of the launch for the Jimi Hendrix “Live At Monterey” program.

At the end of the night, Gary was joined by Mitch Mitchell and Billy Cox of the Jimi Hendrix Experience for three tracks.  The full line-up for this show was Gary Moore (guitar, vocals); Dave Bronze (bass);
Darrin Mooney (drums) with Billy Cox (bass on tracks 9-11, and also vocals on the first two of those) and Mitch Mitchell (drums on tracks 9-11).

Both Gary Moore and Mitch Mitchell have passed since this concert took place, which makes the recording of this incredible night so special. Gary Moore was one of the finest British guitarists of all time
and is one of the few players who could pay homage to Jimi Hendrix’s groundbreaking and truly distinctive guitar style. This is a stunning tribute from one master guitarist to another.

Tracklist:

1)  Purple Haze
2)  Manic Depression
3)  Foxy Lady
4)  The Wind Cries Mary
5)  I Don’t Live Today

Dave Stewart New Album Release

Eurythmics star Dave Stewart will release his new album called 'The Ringmaster General,' on September 4th in the US and September 3 in Europe.

Dave Stewart holds a special place in his heart for Nashville. That's where the legendary British singer, songwriter and guitarist has now recorded two albums: 2011's critically praised The Blackbird Diaries and the forthcoming The Ringmaster General, which was produced by Stewart and Mike Bradford.

A potent and distinctive musical gumbo with rock, blues, country, rhythm & blues and psychedelia, The Ringmaster General was recorded and mixed by John McBride at the famed studio he owns with Martina McBride, Blackbird Studio. It features 13 new songs--including striking duets with Alison Krauss, Diane Birch and Joss Stone--as well as one sung with and co-written by Jessie Baylin. The blistering guitar skills of Orianthi are featured as well. As with The Blackbird Diaries, Stewart is backed by some of the finest musicians in Nashville including: guitarist Tom Bukovac, drummer Chad Cromwell, bassist Michael Rhodes, steel guitarist Dan Dugmore and Mike Rojas on piano.

Says Stewart: "Well to me Nashville has that electric music energy feeling that you get when you arrive in certain cities or towns like Kingston, Jamaica and Havana in Cuba, except Nashville also has the feeling of being in the heart of a huge country (which it is) and it feels kinda like coming home."

He elaborates: "But it's mainly about the people I work and play with there. I've been so fortunate as to have landed in the arms of the McBrides and becoming part of an extended family. John McBride and I share the same crazy passion for sound and all the guys in the band I record with (and the girls) are up for that wild adventure I like to bring in the studio. All the musicians know I'm going to do lots of different experiments in songwriting and performance and they also know that I don't know what it's gonna be yet so it makes for an interesting time, a white knuckle ride, and a wild party of sound."

Stewart's love for Nashville is captured in the documentary The Blackbird Diaries And The Ringmaster General. The film will premiere at a VIP event Wednesday, August 22 VIP at Nashville's Belcourt Theatre, with a limited number of general admission tickets to be made available to the public: www.belcourt.org.

Each ticket includes a free limited edition vinyl copy of Stewart's album The Ringmaster General. The Blackbird Diaries And The Ringmaster General captures Stewart through the whirlwind recording process of two explosive albums. This tongue-in-cheek documentary follows Stewart's adventures in songwriting, letting the viewer witness his eccentric but compelling methods of creativity. The days were filled with mayhem and martinis, while a circus of characters cross Stewart's path; many muses appear to join in the fun including Alison Krauss, Martina McBride, Colbie Caillat, The Secret Sisters, Joss Stone, Stevie Nicks, Jessie Baylin, Diane Birch and Orianthi.

Neal Schon Solo Album Release

Journey guitarist Neal Schon is scheduled to release his new solo album, 'The Calling,' on October 22nd in the UK and October 23rd in the US.

Produced by and featuring Schon on all guitars and bass, 'The Calling' reunites Schon with former Journey bandmate, Steve Smith, who lends his drum talents to all 12 tracks on the new album.

Schon set up shop at Berkeley's famed Fantasy Studios during a break from Journey's busy touring schedule and recorded the album, completely from scratch, in just four days. After overdubbing multiple guitar and bass parts, Schon recruited two keyboard masters to flesh out the music. Igor Len, an accomplished classical, jazz and film composer who had previously collaborated with Schon, is featured on acoustic piano throughout The Calling album.

Special guest Jan Hammer (Jeff Beck, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miami Vice soundtrack) recorded Moog synthesizer solos on two tracks – Fifty Six and Tumbleweeds. Recently, Schon teamed up with Dan Barnett (Journey: Live In Manila) to produce the video for the first single and title track from The Calling.

The World Gets Lifted by MIGHTY HIGH: New Ripple Music Release Tearing Up the Music Sites, Inspires New Deluxe Mighty High Package

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Cosmic Lava proclaims that the latest Mighty High slice of primal rock mayhem is "angry, funny and a powerful jolt of rebellious energy." Downtuned Mag boasts that Legalize Tres Bags is "is an addictive, vulgar, raw, aggressive, filthy son of a bitch. A thirty-minute bad-ass, pure garage-punk 'n' roll fun ride." And Ringmaster spits out "Legalize Tre Bags is a raucous feast of punk, weed, and middle finger attitude-- most of all it's a deeply satisfying slab of rousing rock n roll."

It ain’t politically correct and it ain’t safe. And it appears to be exactly what the world needs right now.

Hot on the heels of Ripple Music’s wildly successful "Blog Tour Release Party" which saw Legalize Tre Bags making it's debut over a series of song premieres on The Soda Shop, Heavy Planet, Cosmic Lava, Grip of Delusion Radio, and The Ripple Effect, the accolades for Brooklyn's Mighty High have been roaring in.Perhaps it's because people are fed up with corporate greed raping the world, fed up with politics as usual, or merely exhausted by the cookie-cutter, overly-produced crap that passes for popular music these days. Or perhaps the world just wants to have fun and rock the fuck out! Whatever the reason, Mighty High seems to have scratched a gigantic international itch for balls-out, irreverent rock music.

To celebrate, Ripple Music is making available in its online store, a special Mighty High package, to help fans get up to speed with the Mighty High story. The package includes every Mighty High release to date: Legalize Tres Bags black vinyl, the "Drops a Deuce" 7" vinyl, the Mighty High/Stone Axe split 7", the double 7" set, Heavy Ripples, featuring the Mighty High tune, "Hempaphobic" and Mighty High's first album In Drug City on CD. All of these are blessed with that wild, Crumb-inspired Braino artwork that Mighty High has become famous for. That's every Mighty High release on vinyl, and the incredibly rare
debut CD, all for one low price! Check out the Ripple store for the Mighty High Deluxe set.

HOODED MENACE - Effigies of Evil

Finland’s doom/death-lords Hooded Menace make their Relapse debut with ‘Effigies of Evil’, a brutally ripping album of slow-paced, down-tuned ultra-heaviness.  Combining the grooving riffs of High on Fire and early Cathedral with the fire of classic Autopsy and Dismember, ‘Effigies Of Evil’ is an instant metal classic.  ‘Effigies Of Evil’ is the peak combination of Hooded Menace’s fascination with classic 90s death metal, prototypical 70s doom and cult horror flicks-----a collection of obsessions that any heavy-music fan proudly wears for life.

‘Effigies of Evil’ is a triumphant album of filth, sludge, riffs and groove that transforms cult heroes Hooded Menace into legitimate heavy metal icons.one of the most intimidating and unforgiving metal albums of the year" - Decibel

"the album is a consistent slow-burn of massive riffs and cavernous growls" - Metal Review

"This record is highly recommended for those who are looking to get away from the cookie-cutter mold of today's oversaturated death metal scene" Revolver Magazine

UME to Release Lynyrd Skynyrd's Three-Disc CD/DVD Set SOUTHERN SURROUNDINGS as a Walmart Exclusive

Features BBC Footage and 5.1 Remixes of Band's Greatest Hits

Press Release: Universal Music Enterprises

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire -08/06/12)- Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members Lynyrd Skynyrd will release a three-disc CD/DVD set, SOUTHERN SURROUNDINGS, exclusively with Walmart, on August 7, 2012.

The deluxe collection will include a CD featuring 14 of the band's greatest hits, featuring "Sweet Home Alabama," "Saturday Night Special," "That Smell" and a live "Free Bird"; a seven-track DVD-Video from a live performance on BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test, and a 10-song DVD-Audio/Video boasting 10 classic songs newly mixed in 5.1 surround sound by Grammy-winning producer Elliott Scheiner.

The BBC DVD features live performances of "Double Trouble," "I Ain't The One," "Call Me The Breeze," "I Got The Same Old Blues," "Every Mother's Son," "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird" from a performance originally broadcasted on November 11, 1975.

The DVD-Audio/Video disc showcases in 96kHz/24-bit uncompressed and 48kHz/24-bit Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound, "Saturday Night Special," "Gimme Three Steps," "Swamp Music," "Gimme Back My Bullets," "The Ballad Of Curtis Loew," "You Got That Right," "That Smell," "All I Can Do Is Write About It," "Simple Man" and "Free Bird" (the complete, 10+ minute extended version).

SOUTHERN SURROUNDINGS offers a superb overview of their career, both as a live act (which can be seen in the BBC footage) as well as a recording group, with the Scheiner-mixed 5.1 surround sound versions adding a whole new perspective to the group's groundbreaking catalog. There are also some rare gems, including an acoustic version of "All I Can Do Is Write About It" on Disc 1 and a scintillating take on J. J. Cale's "I Got The Same Old Blues" from the Old Grey Whistle Test on the BBC DVD disc.

On August 21, Roadrunner/Loud & Proud Records will release the band's new studio album, Last of a Dyin' Breed. The release marks the legendary Southern rockers' first release of new material since Sept. 2009's Gods & Guns, which debuted in the Top 20 of the Billboard album sales chart, their highest bow since 1977.

Led by core members, guitarist Gary Rossington, vocalist Johnny Van Zant and guitarist Rickey Medlock, Lynyrd Skynyrd's legacy began over 35 years ago in Jacksonville, FL. After the 1977 plane crash that killed three band members, including Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines, it took more than a decade for the band to regroup. Joining Lynyrd Skynyrd for the new album is bass player Johnny Colt, an original member of the Black Crowes. The rest of the group features guitarist Mark "Sparky" Matejka, drummer Michael Cartellone, keyboardist Peter Keys and the Honkettes, backing vocalists Dale Krantz Rossington and Carol Chase.

With a catalog of over 60 albums, sales beyond 30 million worldwide and their beloved classic American rock anthem "Sweet Home Alabama" having over two million downloaded ringtones, Lynyrd Skynyrd remains a cultural icon that appeals to all generations.

The band is currently touring North America and will be on the road throughout 2012 in support of Last Of A Dyin' Breed.

Green Day Box Set Coming

The collection treads the band's journey from their 1990 debut, '1,039/ Smoothed Out Slappy Hours', through 'Kerplunk' (1992), 'Dookie' (1994), 'Insomniac' (1995) 'Nimrod' (1997), 'Warning' (2000), and 'American Idiot' (2004), to 2009's '21st Century Breakdown.'

The set features each album in an individual CD paper-sleeve with original artwork, housed in a clamshell box. All eight albums are neatly packaged together in one place, giving the listener a sharp, sizzling slice of punk rock history and an in-depth look at the band's evolution.

Green Day's 19-track debut, '1,039/ Smoothed Out Slappy Hours,' traces their beginnings in the East Bay underground punk scene. The album is a compilation of three separate long plays: 39/ Smooth, Slappy, and 1,000 Hours. Time spent in the studio was particularly true to punk's short and fast form, with the sleeve notes stating that the album was "recorded in twenty-two hours"!

'Kerplunk' followed in 1992, and included an early version of "Welcome To Paradise," which was later re-recorded for 'Dookie 'and released as a single. 'Kerplunk' would also be was the band's last release for the independent label Lookout!. Propelled by incessant touring and word of mouth, the band's popularity increased rapidly, and they eventually signed with Reprise and began preparing for their major-label debut.

'Dooki'e was released in February 1994 and catapulted the band into music's mainstream with the massive hits "Longview," "Basket Case," and "When I Come Around." The album, which began Green Day's longstanding relationship with producer Rob Cavallo, went on to sell over 15 million copies worldwide and earned the band its first Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. Green Day had officially arrived.

Only 18 months later, the highly anticipated 'Insomniac' followed. Singles "Geek Stink Breath," "Brainstew/Jaded," and "Walking Contradiction" sat wedged in heavy rotation on MTV, and the album remains the band's third best-selling record after 'Dookie' and 'American Idiot.'

Testament to the group's ferocious artistic output, they continued with their two-year album cycle and delivered 'Nimrod' in fall of 1997. 'Nimrod 'featured the acoustic single "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)," which has gone on to be one of the band's most beloved songs. Live favorites "Hitchin A Ride" and "Nice Guys Finish Last" are also included.

'Warning' saw Green Day experiment with their sound, bringing a more acoustic layering to many of the album's tracks, including the stomping, sing-along "Minority," the swinging "Waiting," and the reflective "Macy's Day Parade."

Four years later the band released their seminal rock opera 'American Idiot' to massive commercial success and critical acclaim. The album debuted at #1 on the Billboard chart, produced five hit singles, earned seven Grammy nominations (winning two, including Best Rock Album), and even spawned a hit Broadway musical. Ten years after the release of their breakthrough 'Dookie,' Green Day had changed popular music's landscape all over again.

Following the success of 'American Idiot,' expectations were high for the 2009 release of '21st Century Breakdown' and Green Day did not disappoint. The album reached the #1 spot in over 15 countries worldwide and picked up a 2010 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album on the success of hit songs "Know Your Enemy" and "21 Guns."

Green Day is currently preparing for the release of their trilogy of new albums - 'Green Day ¡Uno!,' 'Green Day ¡Dos!,' and 'Green Day ¡Tré!' - on September 25th, 2012; November 13th, 2012, and January 15th, 2013, respectively.

ZZ Top Reveal Album Cover Art/Tracklist for New LP

Iconic blues rockers ZZ Top are scheduled to release a new album called ‘La Futura’ on Sept. 11th via American Recordings.

ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons produced the album alongside Rick Rubin. The Texas-based trio, who are currently celebrating 42 years with the same lineup of Gibbons, bassist/vocalist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard, returned to their roots for the new tracks, but with a new twist.

"We thought long and hard about what this album should be," Gibbons says in a press release. "We wanted to recall the directness of our early stuff but not turn our backs on contemporary technology. The result of this melding of the past and the present is, of course, ‘La Futura.’"

In a new interview with Classic Rock magazine, Billy F Gibbons says of La Futura: "The band is constantly attempting to expand the elegance of the simple trio for bigger effect. The steady and stalwart sides of the sound – focus and ferocity – remain constant. It’s the addition of fuzz and frazz that builds it up. We’re still just three guys drawing on anything and everything to make it snap."

Tracklist:
"I Gotsta Get Paid"
"Chartreuse"
"Consumption"
"Over You"
"Heartache in Blue"
"I Don’t Wanna Lose Lose You"
"Flyin High"
"It’s Too Easy Manana"
"Big Shiny Nine"
"Have a Little Mercy"

Grateful Dead: Spring 1990

And now for something a little different. This year's box set - Grateful Dead: Spring 1990 - offers six complete shows from the epic spring '90 tour, one concert from each city the band played, personally selected by Dead vaultmeister and archival release producer David Lemieux. The sizzling six are: 3/16/90 Capital Centre (Landover , MD), 3/19/90 Hartford Civic Center, 3/22/90 Copps Coliseum (Hamilton, Ontario), 3/26/90 Knickerbocker Arena (Albany, NY), 3/30/90 Nassau Coliseum (Uniondale, NY) and 4/2/90 The Omni (Atlanta, GA).

In his "Producer's Note" in the beautiful book that is part of the box, Lemieux, who attended the first 10 shows on the tour, states, "To my ears this was the last tour that was consistently great, where every show is excellent, not a dud in the bunch." And Grateful Dead historian Dennis McNally's comprehensive and informative insider's essay in the box is titled "The Last Great Dead Tour." These guys know what they're talking about!

Besides the discs themselves, Grateful Dead: Spring 1990 has much to offer, including: a gorgeous 60-page hardcover book containing copious color photos by Jim Anderson and Michael Laurentus, unique artwork by Brooklyn-based fine artist Wes Lang, fascinating business letters and communications related to the tour, a detailed historical essay by Dennis McNally, a Producer's Note by David Lemieux and individual show descriptions by Blair Jackson; a reproduction of the Dead's 1990 tour program (printed and sold later in '90, for the fall and Europe '90 tours); tickets and backstage passes of all six shows; a band publicity photo from 1990 by Ken Friedman; Dennis McNally's tour laminate; and reproductions of the colored 8x10 sheets GDTS sent out with hotel, food and other information for each city on the tour.

With recordings made by longtime Grateful Dead recordist and producer John Cutler, mastered by Jeffrey Norman in HDCD, you just know it's gonna sound great - and it does!

The definitive Gary Lewis & the Playboys collection is back! This 45-track anthology came and went in a heartbeat a few years ago; the critical and commercial response was so good (and continues to be—used copies sell for megabucks online) that we decided to reissue it. It’s still the ideal way to explore the recordings of one of the great singles bands of the ‘60s, featuring the A and B-side of every single they issued on the Liberty label. Many of these original mono singles mixes and most of the B-sides were completely unavailable until this collection came along, and remember, these are the mixes you heard come cracklin’ out of your radio back in the day. Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 30, 2012

DEAR JERRY: If it isn't to much trouble, I think collectors of soundtracks and stage cast records would love to see a list of what are currently the world's most valuable ones. I know I would.

How many can you come up with that have an estimated near-mint worth in the neighborhood of $1,000 or more?
 —Fred Bozeman, Los Angeles

DEAR FRED: Let's put it this way. I came up with enough pricey soundtracks and casts to fill more than just one column, especially with the competition being worldwide and open to all sizes and speeds.

So let's get started with 23 records, each of which in near-mint condition is "worth in the neighborhood of $1,000."

Because all of these are quite close, pricewise, they are shown alphabetically by title.

Next week the second batch will be listed from the lowest ($1,200) to the highest.

The format is as follows:

TITLE - Type of recording (Year issued) - Label name and number (Country where manufactured) Description or additional notes, if any Artist(s) on the disc. Muse Reveal Album Cover Art For New Release

Muse have recently revealed the album cover art for their new release (the band's sixth studio album) called 'The 2nd Law.'   The image is a photograph of the human brain taken from the Human Connectome Project, a project set up to highlight the pathways of the brain by illustrating them with different luminous colors.

The band have promised that it will be 'very diverse' with Matt Bellamy also adding: "We've tried a bunch of new things, which the trailer gives a glimpse of. There's only one song that's like that. We've basically tried to do what Rage Against The Machine did with hip-hop in the 1990s and take a bit of the electronic world and dubstep and play it with real instruments. There's only one track like that, the rest of it is very, very diverse."

LAND OBSERVATIONS ~ DEBUT ALBUM - ROMAN ROADS IV – XI

RELEASE DATE:  SEPTEMBER 4th, 2012

Mute are pleased to announce the signing of Land Observations, and news of the debut release, Roman Roads IV - XI, out on September 4th, 2012.

Land Observations is the solo project of James Brooks, which debuted at the Short Circuit, presents Mute Festival at the Roundhouse in May 2011.

Brooks’ previous band, Appliance, released four critically acclaimed albums on Mute before disbanding. Since then, Brooks has developed his visual and audio art with various shows across the UK, North America and Europe (his current exhibition, The Information Exchange, is at Domobaal, London, WC1 until August 2012).

Throughout, music has remained a constant, with Brooks now connecting his conceptual approaches to instrumental musical compositions.

Attempts to develop a new project alongside the visual art meant that Brooks did a lot of home recording at his flat in Hackney, East London.

Land Observations, developed out of an interest in the former Roman roads that lay just a short walk from his front door - roads of communication and conquest that stretch from the old City of London and out across parts of Britain, Europe and beyond.

Land Observations witnesses Brooks exploring the power of minimalism via layered, repetitive electric VI string guitar – creating warm, evocative instrumentals.

Although Brooks spent considerable time researching Roman Roads-, with each of the compositions responding to the psychogeography of an individual road - this is not just a historical project, or an attempt to look only into the past. There is an obvious fascination with Roman Roads as man made structures, with their bold lines carving through the landscape, creating an album that's a reflection on the broader ideas of travel, momentum and progress.

Roman Roads IV - XI is released on Mute on CD, vinyl and download, with packaging featuring original drawings by Brooks.

The album was recorded at the Bridge and Tunnel Mobile, Berlin and engineered and mixed by Mark Bihler and James Brooks.

Cat Power — “Sun” 2XLP pre-order

Cat Power‘s first album of original material in six years, Sun, will be released on Sept. 4 via Matador. Chan Marshall recorded and played everything on the album herself, a noted departure from the band’s most recent, more expansive work.

SUN is the new studio album from Cat Power. Six years after her last album of original material, Chan Marshall has moved on from her collaborative forays into Memphis soul and Delta blues. She wrote, played, recorded and produced the entirety of SUN by herself, a statement of complete control that is echoed in the songs’ themes.

The music on SUN employs a sweeping stylistic palette: There’s the classic Cat Power haunting guitar and provocative vocal hook in “Cherokee” (“marry me to the sky… bury me upside down”); the irresistible Latin-sounding nine-piano loop of “Ruin”; upbeat, almost dancey electronic anthems like “Real Life” and “3,6,9”; and the stirring, 8-minute epic “Nothin But Time,” featuring a vocal cameo by Iggy Pop. The swagger of “Silent Machine” brings to mind mid-70s Jagger, contrasted with the unusual, sparse production of “Always on My Own.”

The narrative arc of the record is deeply American in its spaciousness and optimism, but the music itself is defiantly modern and global.

Mixed by Philippe Zdar (Cassius, Chromeo, Phoenix).

Pre-orders of the double LP are available here.
