Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 17, 2012

DEAR JERRY: I need to know if my grandfather is yanking my chain. He tried to convince me there once was a song on a 78rpm with the title "Abercrombie and His Zombie."

He said that some folks have a dog or a cat for a pet, but on this record, Mr. Abercrombie had a Zombie.

Is there any truth to this yarn?
—Corey Winskey, Baton Rouge, La.

DEAR COREY: Other than the erroneous reference to pets, there is plenty of truth here. Considering it's been 72 years since the tune came out, grandpa's memory is not too bad.

The correct title is "Abercrombie Had a Zombie," which you coincidentally used in your comments. It is a 1940 single, a 78 of course, written by Mort Greene and Vee Lawnhurst, and recorded by "Fats" Waller and His Rhythm (Bluebird B-10967).

Rather than adopting a living corpse as a pet, Abercrombie's zombie is nothing more than a mixed drink.

Most mixologists concoct a zombie using assorted rums; lime juice; falernum (sweet syrup); Angostura bitters; grenadine; Pernod; cinnamon syrup; grapefruit juice; and other exotic additives.

As a result of their popularity at the 1939 New York World's Fair, zombies quickly went viral. Coinciding with the sudden popularity of the drink, as well as the Fair, was Waller's "Abercrombie Had a Zombie."

In this humorous song, Abercrombie is normally a "meek and quiet" law-abiding fellow who, after a zombie or two, morphs into an out-of-control menace.

DEAR JERRY: In "Romeo and Juliet," the Reflections sing "I'm gonna put Romeo's fate right smack dab …" followed by what?

No one I've asked knows what those next few words are. Can you tell me?
—Kathy Sager, Milwaukee

DEAR KATHY: In William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," the fate of both key characters is the principal storyline.

In the 1964 hit song, it is the singing Romeo's hope to "find work tomorrow," thus avoiding a tragic ending for he and his Juliet. Optimistically, the plan, as well as the complete verse, is to "put Romeo's fate right smack dab on a date."

All of which is a roundabout way to say it's either get a gig or get dumped.

DEAR JERRY: An album I bought in the 1970s is the "Mahogany" soundtrack (Motown M6-858), and on the front cover it states "A Berry Gordy Film, Diana Ross in Mahogany."

Then just recently I spotted a very similar looking Motown LP (label only) on eBay, again with "A Berry Gordy Film, Mahogany, a Paramount Picture" prominently shown. This one is numbered M6-861.

Because the label image was small, I could not make out the tracks.

With only three numbers between them, this one must have also come out the same time as the film. Is it merely a repackage of M6-858?
—Sam Hobart, Clovis, N.M.

DEAR SAM: If the image were easier to read, you would know the only connection between the "Mahogany" soundtrack LP (M6-858) and M6-861 is they both include the "Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To)," along with the reference to it being from "A Berry Gordy Film."

No other tracks appear on both albums.

The "Mahogany" soundtrack came out in October 1975, and the self-titled "Diana Ross" LP followed in January '76. Both are fairly common.

IZ ZAT SO? One World's Fair reference in "Abercrombie Had a Zombie" that might be a mystery to most of the current population is "he never tried to wade in the Aquacade."

Billy Rose's Aquacade was a music, dance, and synchronized swimming show, and probably the Fair's most popular attraction.

While under the influence of multiple zombies, Abercrombie mistook the swimmers' venue for his personal wading pool.

Heart's Kicking & Dreaming The Long Awaited Memoir From Ann And Nancy Wilson In Stores Now!

Two sisters. Two voices. One Heart.

The mystery of "Magic Man." The wicked riff of "Barracuda." The sadness and beauty of "Alone." The raw energy of "Crazy On You." These songs, and so many more, are part of the fabric of American music. Heart, fronted by Ann and Nancy Wilson, has given fans everywhere classic, raw, and pure badass rock and roll for more than three decades. As the only sisters in rock who write their own music and play their own instruments, Ann and Nancy have always stood apart—certainly from their male counterparts but also from their female peers. By refusing to let themselves and their music be defined by their gender, and by never allowing their sexuality to overshadow their talent, the Wilson sisters have made their mark, and in the process paved the way for many of today's female artists.

In Kicking and Dreaming, Ann and Nancy, with the help of critically acclaimed and bestselling music biographer Charles R. Cross, recount a journey that has taken them from a gypsy-like life as the children of a globe-trotting Marine to the frozen back roads of Vancouver, where they got their start as a band, to the pinnacle of success—and sometimes excess. In these pages, readers will learn the truth about the relationship that inspired "Magic Man" and "Crazy On You," the turmoil of inter-band romances gone awry, the reality of life on the road as single women and then as mothers of small children, and the thrill of performing and in some cases partying with the likes of the Rolling Stones, Stevie Nicks, Van Halen, Def Leppard, and other rock legends. It has not always been an easy path. Ann struggled with and triumphed over a childhood stutter, body image, and alcoholism; Nancy suffered the pain and disappointment of fertility issues and a failed marriage but ultimately found love again and happiness as a mom. Through it all, the sisters drew from the strength of a family bond that trumps everything else, as told in this intimate, honest, and uniquely female take on the rock and roll life.

Throughout their career, Ann and Nancy have never found an answer to the question they are most frequently asked: "What is it like to be a woman in rock and roll?" Kicking and Dreaming puts that question to bed, once and for all.

It's kind of hard to describe, it's sort of picking up where we left off. There's a lot of different feels on the album. We're a band where every single member contributes music so that makes it very diverse. It's a very rich album with a lot of different moods to it."

i am a huge donovan fan, although i was really disappointed when i saw him play at a local college in the early 90's.  roger mcguinn (byrds fame) warmed up for him and blew him away.  i was in the front row and it seemed that mcguinn wanted to be there and donovan didn't.  they both played all the old hits, but mcguinn and his rickenbacker were beaming brightly, while donovan just plodded through the old stuff.

Forgotten Tomb New Album Due At The End of October

Forgotten Tomb's new album called , '...And Don't Deliver Us From Evil,' is set be released on October 30 in Europe and on November 6 in North America. The effort will be available on CD, digipack CD (limited to 1000 copies) with exclusive bonus track, digital download and double vinyl LP with an alternative bonus track. The first 66 copies will be available on a multicolor splatter vinyl.  The album was recorded in Elfo Studio (Italy) by Daniele Mandelli and mastered at Finnvox Studios.

Songwriter Ferdinando 'Herr Morbid' Marchisio states that this new album is the most personal one he has written since 2004's Love's Burial Ground and it explores the darkest corners of his mind like never before, making it without any doubt one of the band's more tortured and twisted offerings.

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

this in my inbox, like the song and one would think an instant collectible piece of vinyl!

For Immediate Release

Singer-Songwriter Blake Ian to Release 270 Limited Edition 7” Copies of His Single “Play The King”

Featuring Original Artwork by Renowned Pop Artist Peter Tunney

The complementary worlds of modern art lovers, music enthusiasts and vinyl collectors will collide at Peter Tunney’s Manhattan gallery at 70 Franklin Street on October 24 starting at 7:00 PM. Long time friends and collaborators Blake Ian and Peter Tunney will be showcasing and selling a limited run of 270 copies of Ian’s single “Play The King” on 7” vinyl featuring original artwork numbered and signed by Tunney.

“I’m as much a fan of PT as I am of the great American songwriters like Bob Dylan and Elliott Smith. It’s a privilege to share his work with my fans,” says Ian.

The relationship between the two actually began a few years ago.   Ian released five digital singles varying in genre and production through his label 27 Productions at that time.  All of them featured collaborations with artists, known producers and accomplished musicians, including “Play The King.” Tunney then created original cover art for the song inspired by the Velvet Underground and Warhol.

“I have the original piece in my studio… It’s not for sale!,” laughs Ian.

The mutual respect for each other’s work and a shared love of vinyl is what brought forth this night.
Ian will also be conducting a special live performance that evening for attendees and gallery patrons while Tunney autographs purchased pieces.

Blake Ian has been visible in the NYC folk rock scene for the some time now. He’s released three full-length albums: The Blake Ian Theory (2000), The Basement Waves (2003) and Alchemist (2005). He has toured the country and opened for Donovan, Kenny Loggins, Eric Burdon and The Animals, Leon Russell, Duncan Sheik, Jeffrey Gaines and Christopher Cross. He is a producer as well. He has a hand in virtually every aspect of all of the songwriters’ works that he releases through his own label 27 Productions.

Peter Tunney has become THE name in NYC pop art in recent years from his Franklin Street factory downtown to his Miami gallery in the center of Graffiti Park which has been a centerpiece at Art Basel. His work is up for auction at the elite Phillips de Pury & Company along side the works of Warhol, Basquiat and other kings of modern art. Three of his pieces now stand as massive billboards along the highways in and out of Manhattan. Tunney collectors include Jay-Z, Olivia Wilde and Kid Rock.

Album Review

Ann Peebles – I Can’t Stop the Rain – Hi Records/ PurePleasure vinyl

Ann Peebles’ sultry voice with audiophile quality acoustics…

Ann Peebles – I Can’t Stop the Rain – Hi Record (1973)/ PurePleasure Records SHL32079 180 gram vinyl – Produced by Willie Mitchell; re-mastered by Kevin Gray ****½:

(Ann Peebles, vocals; Howard Grimes, drums; Jack Hale, trombone; Charles Hodges, keyboards; Leroy Hodges, bass; Mabon “Teenie” Hodges, guitar; Wayne Jackson, trumpet; Ed Logan, tenor saxophone; Andrew Love, tenor saxophone; James Mitchell, baritone saxophone; Archie Turner, piano; Rhode, background vocals; Memphis Sanctified Horns – horn section; Sandra Chalmers, background vocals)

Ann Peebles was the lead female vocalist signed to Willie Mitchell’s Hi Records label. Mitchell is more associated with signing the inimitable Al Green to his label and went on to produce many of Green’s signature hits. Willie was noted to use the Hi sound to his artists-organ fills, an outstanding horn section, and a steady drum beat.

All of these were provided to Ann Peebles back in 1973. Ann is most known for a sultry Southern voice and had her biggest hit with “I Can’t Stop the Rain.” The English audiophile label PurePleasure has used the services of legendary re-mastering engineer, Kevin Gray, to work his magic on Peebles’ signature LP. This record is filled with songs regarding the heartbreak of love. Backed by Mitchell’s use of horns and strings that made Al Green’s career, Peebles lets it all hang out, and with an audiophile upgrade, we get the benefit of Pebbles in her prime.

The album opens with the title cut. Peebles has a voice that can reach a falsetto peak. Backed by a drum beat that is in perfect 4/4 beat, and a punchy horn section, you can immediately tell why it worked so well for Al Green. “Do I Need You?” has Ann wonder why she should waste her time on a suitor and she reprises the title track’s refrain.

“Until You Came Into My Life” has sweet strings and is a ballad that Green would have eaten up. The background singers signify and Peebles hits the high notes, as her mood brightens. “Hangin’ On” brings the church into the romantic side of life, and you can imagine the Staple Singers singing this sweet song on the gospel circuit. It has one of the best arrangements on the LP. “Run, Run, Run” brings betrayal back into the mix as Side 1 ends with a great horn arrangement.

“If We Can’t Trust Each Other” brings trust out as the primary requirement for love to last. Howard Grimes’ drum beat is as steady as a Rolex, and the horns and strings sweeten the mood in counterpoint to the lyrics. “A Love Vibration” benefits from the background vocals and the sound mix perfected by Kevin Gray would be hard to match on CD.

“You Got to Feed the Fire” (to make the flame of love go higher) says it all on the next song. The warm strings belie the emotion of anger expressed in “I’m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down.” Room by room, says Ann, and you know she means it…

“One Way Street” ends this classic album filled full of the pitfalls of love’s challenges. I Can’t Stand the Rain is classic Southern soul made possible by a master producer, Willie Mitchell. Motown back in the day featured bouncy lightweight catchy melodies. Hi Records, out of Memphis—like its counterpart Stax Records—dealt with the more realistic, gritty side of love.

Both are classic soul.

Ann Peebles is still with us. PurePleasure keeps her in her prime with magnificent sound. If Al Green is your chief male soul crooner, let Ann Peebles into your life…

TrackList:

Side 1: I Can’t Stand the Rain, Do I Need You?; Until You Came Into My Life; (You Keep Me) Hangin’ On; Run, Run, Run

Side 2: If We Can’t Trust Each Other, A Love Vibration, You Got to Feed the Fire, I’m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down, One Way Street

GLENN HUGHES And DAVID COVERDALE To Commemorate 40th Anniversary Of DEEP PURPLE's 'Burn'?

Former DEEP PURPLE bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes tells CBS Local that he has been in touch with the band's ex-lead singer, David Coverdale, about doing something special to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the "Burn" album. He says, "David and I have talked about this weekly since [former DEEP PURPLE keyboardist] Jon [Lord] died [in July]. How we can do something to keep the flame burning. But we don't want to hinder the heritage of the band. Some bands get back together and sound bloody awful. It's the 40th anniversary of 'Burn' next year. I'm not giving you a hint to something that's gonna happen, but you just never know."

RAZOR & TIE ELP Vinyl Contest

On August 30th the CVR blog ran a press release of RAZOR & TIE's  re-issue of these classic Emerson Lake & Palmer LPs

The CVR blog has obtained advance copies straight from Razor and Tie Marketing Director Bob Hoch!!

These copies (one of each) will be given away to the fifth email (who gets the debut ELP set) and the seventh email (who gets the Tarkus set) to rbenson30@wi.rr.com with the words "Razor &Tie ELP Re-Issue Contest" in the subject line (one email entry per email address please - US entrants only)  Contest is time sensitive, so get your entry in today!

RAZOR & TIE RE-ISSUES OF LEGENDARY PROG ROCKERS EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER’S DEBUT ALBUM AND TARKUS.

BOTH ALBUMS AVAILABLE AS 3-DISC DELUXE SETS ON SEPTEMBER 25th

Both records will be available as 3-disc deluxe editions containing never before released 5.1 Surround Sound and Stereo Mixes, including previously unheard out-takes.  Three time Grammy-nominated producer and engineer Steven Wilson (who has also recently remixed classic albums by Jethro Tull and King Crimson for acclaimed 40th anniversary editions) worked from the original Greg Lake produced multi-track tapes to remix both albums.

Considered by many to be one of rock’s original first super-groups, Emerson Lake & Palmer formed in England in 1970 consisting of Keith Emerson (keyboards), Greg Lake (bass guitar, vocals, guitar) and Carl Palmer (drums, percussion). The band created a brand new world of music, combining classical and symphonic rock fused with beautiful vocals.  Their penchant for appropriating themes from classical music and the group’s more nuanced, textured approach to symphonic arrangements set ELP apart from their more bombastic guitar-based contemporaries of the time.   This subtler and more sublime approach carries on today in the expansive atmospherics of Radiohead and Muse and also in the prog-influenced sphere of band’s like Porcupine Tree, Dream Theatre, Opeth and many others, making ELP one of the more relevant torchbearers of the progressive rock sound.  Along with Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, and Rush, Emerson Lake and Palmer ushered in the Prog era and as one of the most commercially successful rock bands of the 1970’s having sold over 40 million albums.

Razor & Tie’s full catalogue re-issue campaign will continue with the release of newly expanded, re-mastered, editions of four additional ELP classic albums: Pictures At An Art Exhibition (1971- Live Album), Trilogy (1972- Studio Album), Brain Salad Surgery (1973- Studio Album), and Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends – Ladies & Gentlemen (1974- Live Album).

Fans can also purchase Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Tarkus deluxe editions at elp.merchnow.com where the albums will be bundled with a variety of ELP t-shirts perfect for any collector.  Pre-orders are available now for the deluxe albums, vinyl re-presses and a selection of Emerson, Lake & Palmer t-shirts.

Good luck to all entrants!!!

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 10, 2012

DEAR JERRY: Now that Blake Shelton, with "Over," and his wife Miranda Lambert, with "Fastest Girl in Town," are both on the Billboard singles chart, a new question has arisen.

How common is it to find both husband and wife on either the pop or country charts at the same time? I doubt Blake and Miranda are the first.

After an exhaustive online search, I can tell you this information does not exist. I think you're on your own.

Even less likely would be three different hits at the same time, one by each person and a third with them together. Has that ever happened?
—Pauline Huntington, Bloomington, Ind.

DEAR PAULINE: Once again, necessity proves to be the mother of invention. If it doesn't exist, we'll build it.

Beginning with the STC (Spousal Trifecta Challenge), a review of about a hundred years of popular music turned up five months during which the husband and the wife each had a solo hit, and another one as a duo.

Chronologically, they are:

Feb. 1939: Mildred Bailey ("Blame It on My Last Affair") - Red Norvo ("I Get Along Without You Very Well") - Mildred & Red ("I Go for That")

Aug. 1965: Sonny ("Laugh at Me") - Cher ("All I Really Want to Do") - Sonny & Cher ("Baby Don't Go")

Feb. 1972: George Jones ("We Can Make It") - Tammy Wynette ("Til I Get It Right") - George Jones & Tammy Wynette ("Take Me")

Sept. 1979: Louise Mandrell ("I Never Loved Anyone Like I Love You") - R.C. Bannon ("Winners and Losers") - Louise Mandrell & R.C. Bannon ("Reunited")

May 1998: Faith Hill ("This Kiss") - Tim McGraw ("One of These Days") - Faith Hill & Tim McGraw ("Just to Hear You Say That You Love Me")

Slightly more common are spouses with simultaneous solo hits, as in the Blake-Lambert example. Besides the above five, here are 16 more:

Feb. 1959: Carl Smith ("The Best Years of Your Life") - Goldie Hill ("Yankee, Go Home")

Oct. 1961: Skeeter Davis ("Optimistic") - Ralph Emery ("Hello Fool")

Jan. 1963: Steve Lawrence ("Go Away Little Girl") - Eydie Gorme ("Blame It on the Bossa Nova")

Aug. 1965: Johnny Wright ("Hello Vietnam") - Kitty Wells ("Meanwhile, Down at Joe's")

Sept. 1965: Merle Haggard ("I'm Gonna Break Every Heart I Can") - Bonnie Owens ("Number One Heel")

May 1967: Andy Williams ("Music to Watch Girls By") - Claudine Longet ("Hello Hello")

April 1971: Johnny Cash "Man in Black") - June Carter Cash ("A Good Man")

Dec. 1972: James Taylor ("Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight") - Carly Simon ("You're So Vain")

April 1973: Kris Kristofferson ("Why Me") - Rita Coolidge ("Whiskey, Whiskey")

Nov. 1974: Barry White ("You're the First, the Last, My Everything") - Glodean James (of Love Unlimited) ("I Belong to You")

Sept. 1975: Waylon Jennings ("Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way") - Jessi Colter ("What's Happened to Blue Eyes")

Jan. 1981: John Lennon ("Woman") - Yoko Ono ("Walking on Thin Ice")

2012 PROVES BANNER YEAR FOR AMERICAN ROCK BAND HEART WITH NEW STUDIO ALBUM & HARDCOVER MEMOIR ARRIVING THIS FALL

LEGACY RECORDINGS RELEASING FANATIC, THE HARD-ROCK SUCCESSOR TO  2010's TOP 10 DEBUT RED VELVET CAR,  ON TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2

"Kicking and Dreaming:   A Story of Heart, Soul and Rock and Roll,"  The Revelatory Memoir by Ann & Nancy Wilson  On Sale Tuesday, September 18

With Heart's Fanatic, a new studio album, and Kicking and Dreaming, an insiders' memoir, arriving this fall, 2012 is shaping up as a banner year for the iconic American band who--beginning with hits like "Crazy on You," "Magic Man," and "Barracuda" in the mid-1970s running through 2010's Red Velvet Car--have created an enduring catalog of bona fide stadium rock classics and power ballads while establishing a lasting template for women in rock.

Fanatic, Heart's 14th studio album, arrives Tuesday, October 2. The group's second full-length studio album for Legacy, Fanatic premieres 10 new essential performances from sisters Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson on songs including "Fanatic," "Dear Old America," "Walkin' Good" (featuring Sarah McLachlan), "Skin and Bones," "Million Miles," "Pennsylvania," "Mashallah," "Rock Deep (Vancouver)," "59 Crunch," and "Corduroy Road."

The first album of new music from Ann and Nancy Wilson since 2010's Red Velvet Car had its Top 10 debut in 2010,Fanatic was recorded in hotel rooms and studios up and down the West Coast, with Grammy-winning producer Ben Mink back at the helm with the Wilson sisters drawing from their own lives and personal experiences as inspiration for their music. "Dear Old America" comes from memories of a military household and is written from the point of view of their father, a Marine Corps officer, returning from war ("When I get home, I'm going to own this town/Shine this medal/Wear that crown…."); "Rock Deep (Vancouver)" harkens back to the city where Dreamboat Annie was written; and "Walkin' Good" (a duet with Vancouver resident Sarah McLachlan) captures the joy of finding new life in a new love.

The title song is a celebration of the Wilson's life spirit: Ann and Nancy are fanatics about love, art, truth, and the belief that they can do anything together they set their minds to. Fans looking for a first taste of Fanatic can check out the title track on YouTube.

"What a crazy year we are having," said Ann Wilson. "Our box set, Strange Euphoria, and our book, Kicking and Dreaming, each tell the story of our lives so far, personally and musically. Our new album, Fanatic, tells our story as it is now and brings it all up-to-the-minute. What a thrill to have worked with both Charles Cross and Ben Mink respectively on these, and of course to touch the musical magic Nancy and I have always shared together. Anybody want to RAWK??"

Released in 2010, Fanatic's predecessor, Red Velvet Car (the first new studio album in six years from the groundbreaking Seattle-based band) entered the Billboard 200 best-selling album charts at #10, becoming the seventh Top 10 album of Heart's career. Heart's critically-acclaimed first album for Legacy Recordings marked the return of Heart to the Sony Music Entertainment family, reaching #1 in sales on Amazon.com on Sunday, September 5.

On June 5, Epic Records/Legacy Recordings released Strange Euphoria, the first definitive career-spanning, multi-label boxed set retrospective chronicling the seminal American rock band Heart, personally curated by Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson.

A carefully-considered anthology of biggest hits and best-loved songs set alongside deep catalog treasures, rarities, demos and live performances, Strange Euphoria includes three compact discs and one DVD in a deluxe box.

Ann Wilson and her younger sister, Nancy Wilson, first showed the world that women can rock when their band Heart stormed the charts in the '70s with hits like "Crazy on You," "Magic Man," "Barracuda," "Straight On," "Even It Up," "Kick It Out" and many more. Not only did the Wilson sisters lead the band, they wrote the songs and played the instruments, making them the first women in rock to do so. Heart continued topping the charts through the '80s and into the '90s with huge hits like "These Dreams," "Alone," "Never," and a string of other hits that showcased the sisters' enormous talents as both musicians and singers. Along the way, Heart sold more than 35 million records, had 21 top 40 hits, sold out arenas worldwide, and profoundly influenced the sound and direction of American rock music while inspiring women (and guys too!) around the world to rock out in bands of their own.

Heart were 2008 recipients of VH1 Rock Honors, received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Northwest Grammy Foundation, and received ASCAP's award for Excellence in Songwriting in 2009.

What's made Heart endure across four decades and 14 studio albums, from Dreamboat Annie (1976) through 2012's Strange Euphoria and Fanatic is simply the quality of the music and the Wilsons' deep connection to the emotions, psyches and experiences of their fans.

Heart will be touring throughout the summer and fall (June 29-November 17). Alejandro Escovedo and Shawn Colvin will be supporting in October and November respectively. This fall , Ann and Nancy Wilson will be awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (followed by a live concert webcast).

Tuesday, September 18 marks the publication of the HarperCollins hardcover edition of Kicking and Dreaming: A Story of Heart, Soul and Rock and Roll, the avidly-awaited insider's memoir penned by Ann & Nancy Wilson with noted Seattle-based author Charles R. Cross ("Room Full of Mirrors - A Biography of Jimi Hendrix"; "Heavier Than Heaven" - a biography of Kurt Cobain).

Since finding their love of music and performing as teenagers in Seattle, Washington, Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson have been an influential part of the rock music landscape. From 70s classics like "Magic Man" and "Barracuda" to chart- topping 80s ballads like "Alone" up to 2012's Fanatic, Heart continues as an ongoing force in pop culture, inspiring women and men alike with the power and beauty of their music.

Despite their massive success, Ann and Nancy have always faced a different kind of scrutiny than their male counterparts in hard-rock and metal band, and had to face questions that no male rock star ever would be asked. Kicking and Dreaming allows Ann and Nancy to communicate as directly with the reader as their songs do with fans. A first-hand chronicle of tumultuous inter-band relationships, thirty years of roller-coaster fame and continual reinvention, and, of course, the kind of excess that can comes from the surreal, and hyper-real demands of life on the road, Kicking and Dreaming is an intimate, honest, and a uniquely female take on rock and roll life.
