Steve Hackett - Genesis Revisited II (Vinyl 4-LP + CD) Import 2012 (White Vinyl)

If you love quality rock music, then you will certainly have heard Steve Hackett's work on some of the greatest songs of the past four decades. Whether with Genesis, GTR or on his solo output, the man has been a giant of the prog genre. The success he enjoyed with Genesis on six acclaimed studio albums allowed Hackett to subsequently become a consummate and powerful artist in his own right. All you have to do is check out the breadth and depth of the music on his solo records to appreciate that the man has grasped the opportunity to be in control of his own destiny. To create impassioned music that has never become rooted in clichés or stuck in a rut. His latest album basks in the title of 'Genesis Revisited II'. A follow-up to 1996's 'Genesis Revisited', as the title suggests, it sees the guitarist reinterpreting the golden era of the great band - one in which he was crucially involved - while also remaining true to the original spirit which produced such a remarkable string of timeless songs.

"This time around, I've tried to satisfy what everyone wants, including myself. Initially, I was thinking of just going for the best songs not featured on the first album. But then people thought I should do those tracks where the guitar was emphasized. So, I've done both. I've also included four songs, which have Genesis connections, where the song was written originally for the band, or rehearsed by them. For instance, there's 'Please Don't Touch', which I wrote for Genesis, but eventually ended up recording myself."

Go back to the seminal Golden Era with Steve Hackett and his guests as they honor a truly unforgettable music legend.

Rodriguez - Searching For Sugar Man (Vinyl LP) 2012 (White Vinyl + Poster)

The story remains one of the music world's most unusual tales of the 1970s: an obscure debut LP by a Detroit singer-songwriter becomes a source of hope and inspiration to the anti-Apartheid movement in South Africa. Now, the story of Rodriguez and his cult album Cold Fact is the basis for Searching For Sugar Man, a riveting new documentary by filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul. Light In The Attic Records in partnership with Sony Legacy are honored to announce the release of the original motion picture soundtrack, comprising tracks from Cold Fact and its 1971 follow-up Coming From Reality - both reissued in 2008 and 2009 by Light In The Attic. The soundtrack begins with the otherworldly "Sugar Man" and acts as a primer to this long-overlooked musician's fusion of gritty funk, political poetry and blissful psych-folk.

Deal #2

RODRIGUEZ - COLD FACT (VINYL LP) 2012

First Official Reissue! Mastered from the original tapes Co-produced by Motown guitar god Dennis Coffey & Mike Theodore Featuring members of legendary Motown players The Funk Bros. Limited Edition Vinyl LP feat. 180 gram records Its one of the lost classics of the 60s, a psychedelic masterpiece drenched in colour and inspired by life, love, poverty, rebellion. The album is Cold Fact, and whats more intriguing is that its maker a shadowy figure known as Rodriguez was, for many years, lost too. A decade ago, he was rediscovered working as a menial day laborer in Detroit, Michigan. He was unaware that his defining album had become not only a cult classic, but for the people of South Africa, a beacon of revolution. Rodriguez recorded Cold Fact his debut album in 1969, and released it in March 1970. Its crushingly good stuff, filled with tales of bad drugs, lost love, and itchy-footed songs about life in late 60s inner-city America. Gun sales are soaring/Housewives find life boring/Divorce the only answer/Smoking causes cancer, says the Dylan-esque Establishment Blues. But the album sank without trace, thanks, in part, to some of Rodriguezs more idiosyncratic behavior, like performing at an industry showcase with his back to the audience throughout. When the follow-up, 1972s Coming From Reality, also sold poorly, Rodriguez called an end to his recording career. Hed never even played a proper gig. And he got on with life. Over the years, he turned his hand to local politics, gaining a degree in philosophy, factory work and eventually, hard labour.

GRATEFUL DEAD - LIVE IN WINTERLAND (VINYL 2- LP) 2012 (PRE-ORDER 11-26)

The Grateful Dead made the historic Winterland its home for many years until its closure in 1978. The confines of the former ice-skating rink always seemed to bring out something special in the band. This is certainly true of the group's May 30, 1971 performance which was recorded while the band were at their peak; an era immortalized on the 1971 live collection Skull and Rose. For the first time, a portion of the 1971 Winterland show (which is all that the band has in their vault), will be released on a limited edition 180g double LP set sourced from the original reels of ¼" tape. Artwork comes courtesy of Grammy winning graphic artist Masaki Koike who has created a cover that evokes that of the Skull and Roses album. It's over one hour of Grateful Dead classics packed with crowd pleasers like "Sugar Magnolia," "Truckin'" and "Deal." One entire LP side is dedicated exclusively to "Turn On Your Lovelight," a 15-minute-plus romp led by singer/organist Ron "Pigpen" McKernan. For its encore, the band - Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, and McKernan - capped the evening off with a raucous cover of "Johnny B. Goode."

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF NOVEMBER 19, 2012

DEAR JERRY: Last summer while driving down the California coast, in the area between San Luis Obispo and Santa Maria a radio station played what sounded very much like a Beach Boys song.

I thought I knew all of their music, but this one was new to me.

The beat and backing sounded a bit like "Little Deuce Coupe," but this is not a car song. Based on the lyrics the title might be "Can't Take That Away from Me."

Is this a recent recording, or a newly discovered track from the 1960s?
—Austin Willis, Racine, Wis.

DEAR AUSTIN: It is a fairly recent recording, issued just one year before your coastal adventure.

In 2009, Brian Wilson was asked by the family of George and Ira Gershwin to create an album of Gershwin compositions, but interpreted however he saw fit.

The completed album came out in August 2010, on vinyl and CD, titled "Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin" (Disney/Pearl 637101).

The track that, at least musically, reminds you of "Little Deuce Coupe," and other folks of "Little Saint Nick," is "They Can't Take That Away from Me."

Surprising even Brian, the estate also entrusted him with over 100 unfinished works by the Gershwins to consider adding to the project. From this treasure trove, he chose "The Like in I Love You" and "Nothing But Love."

With his rare talent in overdrive, Brian weaved these two into 21st century gems, especially "Nothing But Love."

The other Gershwin chestnuts "reimagined" by Brian are: "Rhapsody in Blue"; "Summertime"; "I Loves You Porgy"; "I Got Plenty O' Nuttin'"; "It Ain't Necessarily So"; "'S Wonderful"; "Our Love Is Here to Stay"; "I've Got a Crush on You"; "I Got Rhythm"; "Someone to Watch Over Me"; plus the downloadable bonus tune, "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off."

"Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin" reached the Top 30 on Billboard's mainstream albums chart, then astounded many people by climbing to No. 1 on their jazz albums chart.

Yes, the JAZZ chart!

DEAR JERRY: Regardless of whether or not they were successful as a musician or performer, who wrote the most No. 1 pop-rock hits?
—Della Stevenson, Jackson, Tenn.

DEAR DELLA: Following industry guidelines, we must treat co-composers and solo writers equally. This means it is how the writers in teams are credited rather the quality or quantity of each contributor. Results reflect Billboard and Cash Box surveys.

Sir James Paul McCartney has written 32 No. 1 hits, while his famous cohort, John Lennon, is the runner-up with 26. Both Paul and John receive credit for 20 chart-toppers by the Beatles: "I Want to Hold Your Hand"; "She Loves You"; "Can't Buy Me Love"; "Love Me Do"; "A Hard Day's Night"; "I Feel Fine"; "Eight Days a Week"; "Ticket to Ride"; "Help!"; "Yesterday"; "We Can Work It Out"; "Paperback Writer"; "Penny Lane"; "All You Need Is Love"; "Hello Goodbye"; "Get Back"; "Hey Jude"; "Come Together"; "Let It Be"; and "The Long and Winding Road." The only one they didn't write is "Twist and Shout."

They likewise share two No. 1 tunes waxed by other artists: "A World Without Love" (Peter and Gordon) and "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" (Elton John).

As for post-Beatles hits, Paul has 10 (the first seven are with Wings): "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey"; "My Love"; "Band on the Run"; "Listen to What the Man Said"; "Silly Love Songs"; "Let 'Em In"; "With a Little Luck"; "Coming Up (Live at Glasgow)"; "Ebony and Ivory" (with Stevie Wonder); and "Say Say Say" (with Michael Jackson).

Lennon has three solos, "Whatever Gets You Thru the Night," "(Just Like) Starting Over," and "Woman," plus David Bowie's "Fame."

IZ ZAT SO? Only twice in the vinyl era did an artist get bumped from the No. 1 chart position by a different one of their own songs, then replace that one with yet another of their entries

Who they are comes as no surprise:

Elvis Presley (August 18 - December 8, 1956): "Hound Dog," "Don't Be Cruel," and "Love Me Tender" (16 total weeks). The Beatles (February 1 - May 9, 1964): "I Want to Hold Your Hand," "She Loves You," and "Can't Buy Me Love" (14 total weeks).

AC/DC Releases Entire Catalog On iTunes

Columbia Records and Apple announced today that AC/DC's music will be available at the iTunes Store worldwide. Sixteen studio albums will be released.  AC/DC was one of the few acts that would not release music through the digital outlet. The Beatles and Kid Rock were also against selling music on iTunes, but have since relented (maybe it has something to do with the money they can make!).   Four of AC/DC's live albums and three compilation records are also available. The statement said the songs have been mastered for iTunes "with increased audio fidelity."

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

from our friends at www.vinylcollective.com (album cover art of the day:)

Yo La Tengo's "Fade" Pre-Order - Release Date : 2013-01-15

Fade is the most direct, personal and cohesive album of Yo La Tengo's career. Recorded with John McEntire at Soma Studios in Chicago, it recalls the sonic innovation and lush cohesion of career high points like 1997‘s I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One and 2000’s ...And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out. The album is a tapestry of fine melody and elegant noise, rhythmic shadowplay and shy- eyed orchestral beauty, songfulness and experimentation.

But Fade attains a lyrical universality and hard-won sense of grandeur that’s rare even for this band. It weaves themes of aging, personal tragedy and emotional bonds into a fully-realized whole that recalls career-defining statements like Blood on the Tracks, I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight, or Al Green's Call Me.

"Nothing ever stays the same / Nothing’s explained," the band sing in unison on the reflective opening track "Ohm". "We try not to lose our hearts / Not to lose our minds." It’s a straightforward sentiment for a band who prefer private intimation to forceful expression. It makes the song’s resistance to resignation feel that much more earned.

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF NOVEMBER 12, 2012

DEAR JERRY: Hopefully you can substantiate something that I cannot convince a coworker is true.

We were talking about how much more accurate the current computerized point of sale system is for ranking music sales, than the indiscriminate ways of years past.

On that we agree, but unless I dreamed it I don't think using computers to track record sales is all that new.

I recall some of the chain stores, such as Tower Records, doing exactly that to determine what was selling and where. I believe that was in the 1970s, but he thinks it was much later.

If you tell me this is all a sci-fi dream, there will definitely be crow on my menu.
—Ernie Judd, Washington, D.C
.

DEAR ERNIE: The current system, computerized of course, for tabulating sales, has been in use since March 1, 1991.

Called Nielsen SoundScan, after founder Arthur Nielsen, this is the same company that began tracking and measuring television audiences in 1950, which they still do.

You're right about stores using computers in the 1970s, but this fashion forward tool for inventory control really began a decade earlier.

In October 1965, E.J. Korvette, a chain of membership discount stores, began using computers in their record departments.

These mammoth machines generated a weekly report indicating which records, including genres, formats, and location demographics, were selling in each of their 39 stores.

If a certain genre or format, (singles, albums, mono, stereo, etc.) didn't sell well at one store, they simply moved those to a more appropriate location.

Just as with SoundScan, Korvette's computers operated from the point of sale, gathering the data entered at their cash registers. No surprise here, since the system was installed by the National Cash Register Company.

Regarding the menu, baked crow, along with humble pie (dessert), are no longer being served.

DEAR JERRY: Who sang "My Father's Voice"? I believe it was made in the 1950s or '60s. Where can I buy it?
—Laura Lea, Sandy, Utah

DEAR LAURA: Even though she doesn't actually sing on it, Judy Lynn's touching narrative of "My Father's Voice" became a Top 20 C&W hit in 1963.

Judy, who was really 27 at the time, speaks as a girl who just turned 16. Part of her birthday is spent in a canyon near a waterfall, where she recalls some of the advice passed on by her late father.

Think of this as the country version of the 1958 hit, "The Teen Commandments" (Paul Anka, George Hamilton IV, and Johnny Nash), with several of the same warnings: don't smoke, don't drink, obey your mother, get an education, don't make whoopee before marriage, etc., etc.

The original single (United Artists 571) is frequently available for under five bucks on Amazon as well as eBay.

Since "My Father's Voice" was Judy's second biggest hit, after "Footsteps of a Fool," you'll find it on "The Best of Judy Lynn" (1966). Either the monaural (UAL-3461) or stereo (UAS-6461) should be available for around $10 from the same online sellers.

DEAR JERRY: Here's one for your "how could this not have been a hit" list, except we'd have to add "in America" to the category.

Nana Mouskouri's 1971 recording of "A Place in My Heart" sold millions worldwide, but is mostly unknown here. Was this tune a U.S. hit by anyone?

I found it in three languages (English, French, and Spanish) on YouTube, but how many others did the Grande Dame make?
—Jo Ann Lee, Hilo, Hawaii

DEAR JO ANN: A couple of other songs using the same title have made the charts, but none are the Jean-Pierre Ferland composition done by Mouskouri.

Nana recorded "A Place in My Heart" in at least seven languages, the other four being German, Portuguese, Greek, and Italian.

Nana also sings fluently in Dutch, Turkish, Hebrew, Welsh, Maori (New Zealand), Mandarin Chinese, Swedish, and Japanese, though we have yet to encounter "A Place in My Heart" in these other tongues.

IZ ZAT SO? Since 1957, when Nana Mouskouri EMI Greece issued her first songs, her sales are nearing 400 million records, from a catalog of 1,500 songs on 450 albums.

With over 230 framed gold and platinum awards, she ran out of wall space long ago.

It is estimated Nana has given over 11,000 concerts, on every continent except Antarctica.

No wonder the Universal Music Group says Nana is the worldwide top-selling female recording artist of all time.

All accomplished without ever being in the U.S. Top 100 with a recording of any kind.

Having turned 78 last month (Oct. 13), Nana, after six decades of performing, is semi-retired and living in Switzerland.
