Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF DECEMBER 3, 2012

Last week, Marie McDonald of Indianapolis requested a list of the 1961 songs that didn't click nationwide but made the Top 30 in Los Angeles, specifically on KRLA radio.

In part one we made it through the month of May, leaving seven months for this week.

Not a one of these Top 30 hits in L.A. appeared in Billboard's Hot 100:

June: "Dinky Doo" (Eddie Bo); "Beware" (Innocents)

Like many others we've mentioned over the years, "Dinky Doo" (Ric 981) makes us wonder why it wasn't a bigger hit. It has no shortcomings, other than perhaps the title. Maybe that's what held it back. Eight years later, Eddie Bo reached the R&B

Top 15 with "Hook and Sling" (Scram 117), a new funk dance in the "Tighten Up" mode.

The Innocents made this list last week by backing Kathy Young on "Our Parents Talked It Over" (Indigo 121). On "Beware," they may have lost points by what seems like an awkward digression for just the chorus.

July: "Same Thing" (Gino Parks)

Produced by Motown's Berry Gordy Jr., who, a few years earlier, wrote hits for Jackie Wilson. On "Same Thing" (Tamla 54042), and the follow-up, "Fire" (Tamla 54066), Parks sounds like a Jackie Wilson tribute artist. Both of these are well done, but they came along while the real Jackie Wilson was still Mr. Entertainment.

August: "Mr. D.J." (Van McCoy); "Well I Ask You" (Eden Kane)

With the smooth "Mr. D.J." (Rock'n 101), Van McCoy gave dee jays the perfect excuse to play his record. Jocks love to get requests, and McCoy wants to dedicate a song to his sweetie, preferably "Mr. D.J." Van made many records over the next 14 years, but didn't chart until his million-selling disco hit, "The Hustle" (1975).

England's Eden Kane just topped the UK charts for two weeks with "Well I Ask You," and there was reason to expect the U.S. issue (London 1993) to also be a huge hit. Unfortunately, it and "Get Lost" (London 9508), his follow-up that reached No. 8 in the UK, were both lost in America.

September: "Beware Below" (Frogmen); "Without Your Love" (Wendy Hill); 14 "My Girl" (Charles McCullough and the Silks)

From Southern California, the surf music epicenter, came the Frogmen and their sizable instrumental hit, "Underwater" (Candix 314). After that came "Beware Below" (Candix 326) which made a few waves on the West Coast, but not coast-to-coast. Some reviewers even preferred the flip side, "Tioga."

Wendy Hill is remembered for her 1965 answer to Gary Lewis' "This Diamond Ring," titled "(Gary, Please Don't Sell) My Diamond Ring" (Liberty 55771). However, "Without Your Love" (Era 3055) is her very best recording. It deserved to be on all of the Top 40 playlists.

Charles McCullough's "My Girl" (Dooto 462) is a soulful crying song. That it didn't at least hit the R&B/Soul charts was, in fact, a cryin' shame. This is completely different than the "My Girl" that became the Temptations' signature song.

October: "My Special Boy" (Carol Connors)

On "My Special Boy" (Columbia 42155), Carol's intimate style is strikingly similar to that of the Paris Sisters. They spent 20 weeks on the charts in 1961 with the similarly titled "Be My Boy," and their biggest hit, "I Love How You Love Me." Then there was the sensational Ann-Margret, hot on the scene. Perhaps there just wasn't room for another purring kitten.

November: "Trade Winds, Trade Winds" (Aki Aleong)

"Trade Winds, Trade Winds" (Reprise 20,021), blew into the Los Angeles Top 10, and was Aleong's best selling record.

Still, Aki is much better known for his lengthy acting career. From 1956 to 2009, he appeared in more than 250 television shows and over 40 feature films.

December: "I'm a Little Mixed Up" (Betty James); "And Then Came Love" (Ed Townsend)

Though the brand of gritty blues from Betty James is reminiscent of Etta James, they are not related. Betty should have made the R&B charts with this ditty, but didn't. She then tops "I'm a Little Mixed Up" (Chess 1801) with a perfect sequel, "I'm Not Mixed Up Anymore" (Chess 1837). Betty wrote it and delivers it with an attitude.

Wrapping up 1961 is Ed Townsend, whose only bona fide hit is the enchanting "For Your Love," his own composition and a Top 15 smash in 1958. "And Then Came Love" (Challenge 9129) is the beautifully told evolution of love, from the dark ages to the light. This track might have been better suited for release in 1958.

IZ ZAT SO? With "My Diary" and "My Special Boy," Carol Connors is the only artist with two singles on this unique list. Ironically, both were simultaneously issued by Columbia on 45 and as Compact 33 Singles.

We will credit the Innocents with one-and-a-half entries, since they back Kathy Young on "Our Parents Talked It Over," then have their own with "Beware."

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF NOVEMBER 26, 2012

DEAR JERRY: My favorite year for pop music is 1961, partly because I lived in Los Angeles then, the home of many of the top record companies, and plenty of wonderful radio stations to play their new releases.

My favorite, KRLA 1110 (King Radio Los Angeles) took pride in always having some songs on their playlist that were NOT found in the national Top 100. Many stations would not play anything until it became an established hit.

On their printed Top 30 Tunedex surveys, they sometimes put an asterisk next to records "you won't hear anywhere else."

Any chance I could get a list of those? I would be so thankful!
—Marie McDonald, Indianapolis

DEAR MARIE: Okay, I get the Thanksgiving reference. Only a curmudgeon could deny your request.

As you correctly imply, there always have been leaders and followers in radio. KRLA was clearly willing to take a chance on an unknown song or artist.

You have, however, overstated the meaning of their asterisk. Used in this context, it indicated songs not being played at that time by station "Brand X," their primary Top 40 competitor, the more musically conservative KFWB.

Many of these selections were regional hits in other markets, but none had an impact nationwide.

Some are generally unknown today, even by oldies aficionados, while others are deeply ingrained in R&R or R&B culture.

Chronologically, here is part one of a year's worth of KRLA Top 30 singles, none of which ever reached Billboard's Top 100:

January: "You're the One" (Spiders); "You're Gonna Be Paid" (Vernon & Jewell); "Girl in the Window" (Bobby Hart); "Green Stamps" (T-Birds)

When originally issued, in January 1954, the ballad "You're the One," and the up-tempo side, "I Didn't Want to Do It" (Imperial 5265), both made the R&B Top 10 for the Spiders. The repackage, with "Tennessee Slim" on the reverse (Imperial 5714) did not fare nearly as well in the pop market.

Vernon & Jewell never charted nationally, but are somewhat known for their 1964 revival of "A Rockin' Good Way" (Kent 405), a 1960 hit for Dinah Washington & Brook Benton.

Speaking of duos, Bobby Hart & Tommy Boyce went big time in 1967, especially with "I Wonder What She's Doing Tonite." Bobby's "Girl in the Window" (Era 3039) was just one of his pre-Boyce & Hart releases.

The T-Birds' "Green Stamps" (Chess 1778) was a very commercial tie-in with the 1960s trading stamp craze, and it deserved a better fate.

February: "Tonk Game" (Hank Marr); "Depend on Me" (Miracles); "A Night with Daddy 'G'" (Church Street Five) "Tonk Game" (Federal 12400) may have been hindered by sounding so much like "Honky Tonk" (Bill Doggett). Marr's follow-up was even a remake of Doggett's "Ram-Bunk-Shush."

How the beautiful "Depend on Me" (Tamla 54028) flopped is a mystery. It's one of Smokey Robinson's best ballads. Around the same time, "You Can Depend on Me," an entirely different song, hit the charts for Brenda Lee.

Three months later, Gary "U.S." Bonds" added words to the instrumental "A Night with Daddy 'G'" (Legrand 1004), renamed it "Quarter to Three" (Legrand 1008), and rode it to No. 1 nationally. This is why Gary gives a shout-out to "a band called the Church Street Five," and the "swingingest song there could ever be is A Night with Daddy 'G'."

March: "The Closer You Are" (Channels); "Be Sure (My Love)" (Dubs); "Sparkle and Shine" (Four Couquettes)

Here we have the third issue of "The Closer You Are" (Port 70014), and, as in 1956 and '59, it didn't catch on nationally.

Likewise was the fate of "Be Sure (My Love)," first released in 1958 (Gone 5034). Both are among the greatest R&B doo-wop records ever, and both did make KRLA's Top 20.

"Sparkle and Shine" (Capitol 4534) is a female doo-wopper that soared all the way to No. 6 in the Land of 1110. Immediately after "Sparkle and Shine," the quartet changed their name to the Four Cal-Quettes.

April: "So Sick" (Lucky Clark); "My Diary" (Carol Connors)

Lucky was unlucky in love and sales. "So Sick" (Chess 1782) had everything necessary to be a hit, that is except radio exposure beyond Southern California. After his gal moved on, he says "It made me sick, ooh so sick, I'd have to get a little better to die."

Carol Connors (nee, Annette Kleinbard), Phil Spector, and Marshall Leib were the Teddy Bears, whose "To Know Him Is to Love Him" hit No. 1 nationally. But going solo, neither "My Diary" (Columbia 41976) nor any of Carol's singles ranked in the Top 100.

May: "Lil' Ole Me" (Cornbread & Jerry); "Girl Machine" (Johnny Walsh); "Our Parents Talked It Over" (Kathy Young and the Innocents)

"Lil' Ole Me" (Liberty 55322) features pianist Jerry Smith, who in 1963 played on the Dixiebells' "[Down At] Papa Joe's" and "Southtown, U.S.A." Jerry then had his own hit in 1969 with "Truck Stop."

Inspired by a 1960 regional hit, "Robot Man," by Connie Francis and covered by Jamie Horton, "Girl Machine" (Warner Bros. 5196) finds Johnny Walsh also yearning for a mate of the artificial life form variety.

Sandwiched between two great recordings by Kathy Young, "Happy Birthday Blues" and "Magic Is the Night," is "Our Parents Talked It Over" (Indigo 121). It is on a par with her other tunes, and should have at least registered a blip nationally.

Next week: the rest of 1961

Mastered by Jon Astely and Miles Showell at Close to the Edge and Metropolis Studios

Lavish Set Features Original LP Artwork with Posters, Inserts, and More!

The world's greatest rock band. The Who, stands alone in rock music. The most explosive live act ever to appear on stage, the most musically inventive and structurally innovative band of all time! Propelled by the most staggeringly brilliant rhythm section in all popular music, layered with deafening power chords and thunderous vocal fury, The Who transcended its original billing as "Maximum R&B." Together, the four divergent personalities of The Who produced a hurricane. Each of them was a pioneer. Wildman drummer Keith Moon beat his kit with a chaotic elegance; stoic bassist John Entwistle held down the center with the melodic virtuosity of a solo guitarist; raging intellectual Pete Townshend punctuated the epic universality of his songs with the windmill slamming of his fingers across his guitar strings; and Roger Daltrey roared above it all with an impossibly virile macho swagger. They exploded conventional rhythm and blues structures, challenged pop music conventions, and redefined what was possible on stage, in the recording studio, and on vinyl. Never before or since has spiritual and intellectual brilliance sounded so gloriously furious. Alone among the great bands, The Who has found itself at the center of every major rock event - Monterey, Woodstock, the Isle of Wight, the Concert for Kampuchea, Live Aid, the Concert for NYC. In any era, The Who is a touchstone for rock and roll greatness. They have sold more than 100 million albums and won every award including Grammys/Brit Awards/Lifetime Achievement. They have been inducted into both the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and UK Music Hall of Fame. Their charitable work is legendary with millions of dollars raised over the years for a variety of causes.

Steve Hackett - Genesis Revisited II (Vinyl 4-LP + CD) Import 2012 (White Vinyl)

If you love quality rock music, then you will certainly have heard Steve Hackett's work on some of the greatest songs of the past four decades. Whether with Genesis, GTR or on his solo output, the man has been a giant of the prog genre. The success he enjoyed with Genesis on six acclaimed studio albums allowed Hackett to subsequently become a consummate and powerful artist in his own right. All you have to do is check out the breadth and depth of the music on his solo records to appreciate that the man has grasped the opportunity to be in control of his own destiny. To create impassioned music that has never become rooted in clichés or stuck in a rut. His latest album basks in the title of 'Genesis Revisited II'. A follow-up to 1996's 'Genesis Revisited', as the title suggests, it sees the guitarist reinterpreting the golden era of the great band - one in which he was crucially involved - while also remaining true to the original spirit which produced such a remarkable string of timeless songs.

"This time around, I've tried to satisfy what everyone wants, including myself. Initially, I was thinking of just going for the best songs not featured on the first album. But then people thought I should do those tracks where the guitar was emphasized. So, I've done both. I've also included four songs, which have Genesis connections, where the song was written originally for the band, or rehearsed by them. For instance, there's 'Please Don't Touch', which I wrote for Genesis, but eventually ended up recording myself."

Go back to the seminal Golden Era with Steve Hackett and his guests as they honor a truly unforgettable music legend.

Rodriguez - Searching For Sugar Man (Vinyl LP) 2012 (White Vinyl + Poster)

The story remains one of the music world's most unusual tales of the 1970s: an obscure debut LP by a Detroit singer-songwriter becomes a source of hope and inspiration to the anti-Apartheid movement in South Africa. Now, the story of Rodriguez and his cult album Cold Fact is the basis for Searching For Sugar Man, a riveting new documentary by filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul. Light In The Attic Records in partnership with Sony Legacy are honored to announce the release of the original motion picture soundtrack, comprising tracks from Cold Fact and its 1971 follow-up Coming From Reality - both reissued in 2008 and 2009 by Light In The Attic. The soundtrack begins with the otherworldly "Sugar Man" and acts as a primer to this long-overlooked musician's fusion of gritty funk, political poetry and blissful psych-folk.

Deal #2

RODRIGUEZ - COLD FACT (VINYL LP) 2012

First Official Reissue! Mastered from the original tapes Co-produced by Motown guitar god Dennis Coffey & Mike Theodore Featuring members of legendary Motown players The Funk Bros. Limited Edition Vinyl LP feat. 180 gram records Its one of the lost classics of the 60s, a psychedelic masterpiece drenched in colour and inspired by life, love, poverty, rebellion. The album is Cold Fact, and whats more intriguing is that its maker a shadowy figure known as Rodriguez was, for many years, lost too. A decade ago, he was rediscovered working as a menial day laborer in Detroit, Michigan. He was unaware that his defining album had become not only a cult classic, but for the people of South Africa, a beacon of revolution. Rodriguez recorded Cold Fact his debut album in 1969, and released it in March 1970. Its crushingly good stuff, filled with tales of bad drugs, lost love, and itchy-footed songs about life in late 60s inner-city America. Gun sales are soaring/Housewives find life boring/Divorce the only answer/Smoking causes cancer, says the Dylan-esque Establishment Blues. But the album sank without trace, thanks, in part, to some of Rodriguezs more idiosyncratic behavior, like performing at an industry showcase with his back to the audience throughout. When the follow-up, 1972s Coming From Reality, also sold poorly, Rodriguez called an end to his recording career. Hed never even played a proper gig. And he got on with life. Over the years, he turned his hand to local politics, gaining a degree in philosophy, factory work and eventually, hard labour.
