Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 4, 2013

DEAR JERRY: I hope you can do for me what you've done for many others.

My latest entertainment addiction is "The Forsythe Saga," the 2002 mini-series.

If you've seen it, you'd know that nearly every episode ends with the same song. It's just a guess, but the title may be "Life Is a Dance." They don't put a name on it.

Since it is heard only at the end while the credits roll, I don't know if it would be considered their theme.

Either way, I can't locate this music anywhere (Pandora, iTunes, Rhapsody, etc.). What I do find, but don't need, is a book of the same title.
—Rochelle Jones, Lancaster, Pa.

DEAR ROCHELLE: It's your addiction, but has John Forsythe ("Charlie's Angels," "Dynasty," etc.) somehow infiltrated your thinking?

I ask because John Galsworthy's original trilogy, and the films they inspired for theater and television, are about the Forsyte family, not Forsythe. The difference may or may not have hindered your search, but it seems you'd want to get the name right.

First published in 1906, with sequels over the next 14 years, Galsworthy's "Forsyte Saga" is still among Britain's Top 125 Best Loved Novels, according the BBC's Big Read Poll.

As for the title you actually wrote about, there is no official "Theme from Forsyte Saga." Yet, the tune you hear over the end credits, titled "Irene's Song," is often referred to as the show's theme.

"Life is a dance we must learn" is merely an oft-heard line in "Irene's Song."

Irene Herron-Forsyte, played by Gina McKee, is the story's most compelling character. Of the 25 tracks on the 2002 Universal Classics soundtrack album, eight are about Irene who married into the Forsyte clan — twice.

So important is Irene that the first U.S. film adaptation (1949) is even titled "That Forsyte Woman," with Greer Garson cast in the starring role.

"Irene's Song," composed for the 2002 "Forsythe Saga" by Geoffrey Burgon (music) and Jacqueline Kroft (lyrics), is performed by the renowned opera star, Bryn Terfel.

Soon after (2003), the Prince of Wales honored Terfel, making the Welshman a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, and thereafter designated as Bryn Terfel CBE.

In 2006, he received the Queen's Medal for Music, an annual award for one's contribution to the musical life of Great Britain.

DEAR JERRY: I thought I could solve my own music mystery, but I now realize I need your help.

None of the Billboard record history or survey chart books credit Lou Monte as having a hit song before "Lazy Mary," from early 1958.

However, about a year earlier there was a big hit in New England by Lou. I know this because I recall where I lived then, where I was in school, and how I faithfully I listened to the Top 40 stations.

About half the song is sung in Italian, so the title may also be Italian. Either way, I can't identify it.

Can you help me close this case?
—Wes Marlowe, Woonsocket, R.I.

DEAR WES: Because you seem certain about the year, I confined the search to 1957, a year in which Lou Monte had eight songs on four singles.

None of those made Billboard, as you know, but "Roman Guitar" (RCA 6769) did hold the No. 50 spot for a couple of weeks on Cash Box — exactly one year before "Lazy Mary."

The clincher came when I spotted "Roman Guitar" sitting at No. 2 on WCOP's "Forty Top Tunes of Greater Boston," for the week of March 4, 1957.

You are right about its popularity in that area. In fact, only Elvis Presley's "Too Much" prevented "Roman Guitar" from reaching No. 1 in Boston.

Case closed.

IZ ZAT SO? For the record, "Lazy Mary (Luna Mezzo Mare)" was not Monte's first hit song. Four years earlier, accompanied by Hugo Winterhalter and His Orchestra, Lou made the Top 10 with "Darktown Strutters Ball (Italian Style)" (RCA Victor 5611).

As is more often than not the case with recording artists, not every release becomes a hit. That is certainly true for Lou Monte and his first eight years with RCA.

From his debut single (1952) to his last before switching to Roulette (1960), then to Reprise (1961), RCA Victor issued 31 singles.

Considering that only two, "Darktown Strutters Ball" and "Lazy Mary," reached the national Top 40, RCA showed phenomenal belief in Monte, but success eluded them.

When Lou joined fellow amici, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, at Reprise Records, everything changed.

In 1962, with just his fifth Reprise single, "Pepino the Italian Mouse" (R-20,106), Monte reached the Billboard Top 5 for the first time.

from an old friend in vinyl, cheers for another groovy adventure!

Now available...Vinyl Lives II!

The groovy adventures begun in the first Vinyl Lives (2010) continue in Vinyl Lives II. Stores covered include Dusty Groove (Chicago), Criminal Records (Atlanta) and The Electric Fetus (three Minnesota locations). Nine record collectors are also interviewed. Their voices add an important dimension--and further help to amplify the role of independent record stores--and vinyl!--in the digital age.

Here’s what Terry Stewart, President and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame had to say about Vinyl Lives II:

“Let’s face it, as collectors we chase this stuff as much for the stories we can tell versus the sounds in the grooves. In that sense, James Goss has certainly delivered to us true believers another double shot of our babies love…so drink up!”
Also, fans of record stores and vinyl records still delight in the first Vinyl Lives (Aventine Press, 2010). Independent record stores chronicled include Amoeba Music (Berkeley, San Francisco and Los Angeles), Twist & Shout in Denver and the Louisiana Music Factory in New Orleans.

In 2010, Vinyl Lives was an Editor’s Pick in Goldmine magazine:

"Anybody who has an interest in record collecting and the ongoing plight of the independent record store will find Vinyl Lives a necessary read."--Pat Prince, Editor

Please note: Both books are Print-on-Demand titles.

Per book cost: $10.00, plus shipping and handling.

For orders of 25 or more books, the per book wholesale cost is $7.50, plus shipping and handling.
Interested buyers may contact me directly:

Press Release - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Feb 5, 2013

New Austin Music Reality Show to Focus on "Classic" Song Stories and Remakes.

Cover Me is a "Behind the Music" series based in Austin, Texas. It will feature a group of musicians and singers collectively known as "The Cover Kings". The show is currently running a campaign on Kickstarter.com.

This musical biography will explore some of the the greatest hit songs of our time and the artists that made them famous. Cover Me will examine some 90 iconic artists ranging from ABBA to ZZ Top, relate the story of the song and the artist - and then create a modern interpretation of the material. Combining new music technology and Austin's world-class talent pool, the Cover Kings will create fresh versions of many hit songs from decades past and present.

The success of dozens of talent search and music reality shows - from American Idol to Glee and X-factor, clearly demonstrate a mass appeal for modern takes on former hits. Through these shows,
Billboard has charted hundreds of new cover versions in the top 100. Indeed, showcasing classic songs and artists are large part of the draw of these popular shows.

Cover Me producer and creator, Daniel Sage, says of the show, “It is our wish to inspire and be inspired by these gems of craftsmanship and make them relevant once again. Part of our unique sound is to incorporate the infectious beats that drive dance and rap music and still maintain a live band setting. So, if you've ever been curious to hear Cat Stevens over a Jay-Z beat or what blending Sinatra and Steve Miller would sound what like – you'll love what what we like to call our sonic makeovers.”

Sage continued “our journey seeks to blend Austin's greatest resource - the gifted musician - with the classic artists they are being asked to cover. Our quest is to capture the essence of pop music thru the
vehicle that every artist pours heart and soul into – the song itself.”

The web audience will be a source material for many sections of the show, including opinion and interview snippets as well as voting on their favorite Cover King remakes to be performed live in Austin at the end of each episode. Through these many interactive tools, the audience will be part of discovering and breaking the next Stevie Ray Vaughn, Spoon or Dixie Chicks.

Austin, universally known as the "Live Music Capital of the World," has more than doubled in size in the past 10 years and, with over 200 live venues, has been a place for musicians to thrive and grow.
Having honed their craft in other American cities, they have now chosen Austin as home. It's become a town of happy transplants and dreamers, those who have thrown caution to the wind to make a better, weirder life for themselves. The show will also tell their personal stories. Stories played out to the greatest soundtrack ever compiled - the last 50 years of country, pop, rock, and soul music.

Cover Me will take you through the entire process - from talent auditions, to arranging the songs and choosing the instrumentation - to recording, mixing, and final editing.

The Cover Kings intend to record 100 cover songs and offer them as single downloads and as a 10 Album Set. Cover Me will include 12 video episodes and 24 audio podcasts and encourage other Austin artists – painters, graphic artists, filmmakers - to contribute to the show.

He spent many years in L.A. working in cover bands at night and recording studios during the day, including sitcom bands such as “Seinfeld” and “Golden Girls”. Moved to Las Vegas and worked in various lounges and showrooms, even touring with the European cast of HAIR. Paper Pilots EP
CD / Flexi Disc / Digital
Jet Parts Records / UsedBinPop Music / Alpha Pup Distribution

First single "Lacksadaisical" from the forthcoming EP here

EP is available Feb. 5th!
In the grandest tradition of pop, Paper Pilots' sound is intently familiar. Sitting somewhere between the worlds of contemporary indie pop and '60s British rock music, Los Angeles arrival Justin David Bocchieri sets forth to revive classic songwriting by way of lush, grandiose arrangements and illustrated by lyrical waxing worthy of dialogue between Ringo Starr & Marc Bolan during Born To Boogie.

Aiming for the pristine melodic heights of The Zombies' Odyssey & Oracle, or Bacharach with a sense of psychedelia ala Revolver, with the lead off track "Lacksadaisical", their EP quickly moves into noisier territory through the kind of orchestrated rock inspired by early Scott Walker or Bowie and honed by The Last Shadow Puppets. The short journey touches down gently in the modern folk territory of Sondre Lerche, The Shins or even Belle & Sebastian, with the frail, but joyous crescendo of "My Home".

"Their first single Lacksadaiscal (that's on purpose, that title) and the B-side Catch the Lamplight Low give you an idea of where they're are headed. It's someplace good." -Buzzbands.la

Paper Pilots EP is being released its own imprint Jet Parts Records in partnership with UsedBinPop Music / Alpha Pup Distribution.

Paper Pilots debut EP features contributions from drummer Stephen Edelstein (Caught A Ghost), bassist Ryan Hailey (Orlando Napier Band), lead guitar Evan Winsor (Bluegrass band, The Get Down Boys), and a first time behind the producer's desk for John Girgus (Ex-Sarah Records Aberdeen). It was recorded and mixed with Ulysses Noriega who has worked recently with The Wedding Present, The Mars Volta amongst many others. Musicianship shines with a production aesthetic somewhere between the golden age of the 1970s and all mod cons.

So far, just a few releases, but with the upcoming schedule, you can see why they will be supplying quality vinyl for a long time!

The Dillards -  Wheatstraw Suite

Exhibit Records is proud to present:

The Dillards' blend between pop and bluegrass on this impeccable recording paved the way for a generation of country-rockers and folk-rockers, making it, arguably, their most influential album. Wheatstraw Suite is the fourth album by The Dillards, released in 1968 it's their first album to move away from their traditional bluegrass sound by using a full orchestra and occasional drums.

The Dillards had been experimenting for some time before they released this album, Rodney and Douglas Dillard, Dean Webb and Mitch Jayne made up one of America's premier bluegrass groups and by 1965, certain members began exploring other ideas. The band toured with The Byrds, (featuring future Buffalo Springfield drummer Dewey Martin), but Wheatstraw Suite was the first time they explored the new sound on a full length album. The album features seven original songs and six covers, the covers being drawn mostly from contemporary rock and pop musicians rather than traditionals. One of the tightest ensembles of all time, the Dillards perfected a brand of eclectic bluegrass-country-folk that has never been equaled. The songs all come together to form this masterpiece of great vocal harmonies and virtuosic banjo picking.

Rodney Dillard - vocals, guitar, dobro
Herb Pederson - vocals, banjo, guitar
Dean Webb - mandolin
Mitch Jayne - bass

Order Them Here!

180 GRAM VINYL • PRESSED AT RTI

Artist: Albert King
Title: The Big Blues
LP 5429 - 180 GRAM VINYL LP

Standing well over six feet and weighing in at around 250 pounds, it’s no surprise that Albert King earned the nickname “The Velvet Bulldozer.” Standing on stage with his Gibson Flying V, named Lucy, King cut an imposing visual figure. After a few abortive recording attempts, King scored a #14 R&B single on King Records with “Don’t Throw Your Love on Me So Strong” in 1961. The song captured the distinctive call-and-response style between King’s voice and guitar, a direct extension of his gospel roots and it was included on his debut album, The Big Blues. Backed by a razor sharp band, which included Ike Turner on piano, King showed an authoritative command of ballads, rumbas and mid-tempo shuffles. It was a sound honed in countless club gigs, a “vivid sound” as the LP jacket rightly proclaimed. To restore this sound to its royal splendor, Sundazed sourced this reissue from the original King mono master tapes. Pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Record Technology, Inc. (RTI) in Camarillo, CA, this resurrected LP boasts breathtaking sound. Nothing less would have been worthy of one of the most important albums in the blues pantheon. All hail King Albert!

180 GRAM VINYL • PRESSED AT RTI

Artist: Freddy (Freddie) King
Title: Freddy King Goes Surfin'
LP 5423  - 180 GRAM VINYL LP

Syd Nathan, impresario of Cincinnati’s King Records, was the epitome of the old-school indie record label owner. Always hustling, Nathan regularly beat the odds to release hit after hit in multiple genres. He’d try anything if he thought it might work, or more precisely, if he thought it would make money. After issuing the hit album Let’s Hide Away and Dance Away with Freddy King, Syd sensed untapped potential in the LP. Inspired by the West Coast surf scene, he conjured a little marketing magic...GET A NEW COVER WITH SOME SURF KIDS! THROW SOME CROWD NOISE OVER TRACKS SO IT SOUNDS “LIVE”! CALL IT...ERR...FREDDY KING GOES SURFIN’! PRESS IT AND HAVE IT ON THE SHELVES BY NEXT WEEK!!!!!!!

While it may not have happened EXACTLY like that, King Records did release the album containing the very same songs (in precisely the same running order) as Let’s Hide Away...with crowd noise dubbed over the music. And it WORKED! Fellow Lone Star blues maven Billy F. Gibbons later picked it as one of his Top Ten Favorite Blues Albums of All Time. Pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Record Technology, Inc. (RTI) and sourced from the original King/Federal analog tapes, Sundazed is proud to present Freddy King Goes Surfin’ in magnificent mono fidelity. Cowabunga!

TRACK LIST:
1. Hide Away
2. Butterscotch
3. Sen-Sa-Shun

Title: The Missing Links LP w/ The Links Unchained EP
LP 5422  - VINYL LP + EP

Though they have different approaches, a common thread runs through Australian bands like the Saints, Hoodoo Gurus, Midnight Oil and AC/DC: an aggressive, take-no-prisoners posture designed to grab audiences by the throat. This direct crowd–band interaction is essential on the rough-and-tumble Oz pub circuit, where if the group doesn’t deliver the goods, they’re likely to go down in a hail of lager cans. Whatever it is that puts the raw in Antipodean rawk, it’s been there from the beginning. For proof, check the wild, outrageous sounds of the Missing Links. Formed in Sydney in 1964, a series of personnel changes eventually replaced all original members, leaving vocalist Andy Anderson, guitarist Doug Ford, drummer Baden Hutchens, bassist Ian Thomas and Chris Gray on keyboards. It was this lineup that recorded the band’s 1965 debut album, The Missing Links. An instant garage punk classic, The Missing Links took the UK R&B combo model and drenched it in attitude and feedback, making contemporaries like the Troggs and the Who appear tame by comparison. The sonic guitar meltdown at the end of “You’re Drivin’ Me Insane” presages Jimmy Page’s Zeppelin liftoff by a full three years while “Wild About You” defies description, except to say it still sounds shocking nearly 50 years on.

This slice of vigorous vinyl became one of the most prized acquisitions for garage punk fans the world over, with each successive wave of Down Under musical malcontents spreading its legend. The globe-trotting team at Sundazed has now restored the album in all its magnificent MONO glory! What more could you want? Well, how about the IMPOSSIBLY rare EP, The Links Unchained, featuring four more cuts of mid-Sixties madness!?! For a limited time, Sundazed is offering both of these audacious aural artifacts in one convenient package!

7" SINGLE FROM NASHVILLE-BASED POWER TRIO!

Artist: Simo
Title: Shake It / AOH
S 257  -  7” Vinyl Single

Not long ago, Nashville-based “guitarists’ guitarist” J.D. Simo accepted an invitation from bassist Frank Swart and drummer Adam Abrashoff to join an informal jam session and, at the end of a 3-hour improvisation, SIMO was born! A power trio for the new millennium, SIMO harkens back to the days when bands built followings not online, but on stage. Together, these three master musicians conjure a sorcerous sound that assaults your senses in all the best ways and leaves you wanting more. This aural alchemy has been captured on their debut single, “Shake It” b/w “AOH.” Just listen to the urgency of “Shake It,” a track that practically COMMANDS you to get up and move! Flip the platter and marvel at players’ prowess on “AOH”! After hearing this single, two things are certain: 1) you will want to hear it again (and again), and 2) you will frantically search your local listings to see if you can catch SIMO live. They may be coming to your town, and in the meanwhile treasure this slice of timeless vinyl and tell your friends that SIMO is the cream of the new musical crop!

Top Five Super Bowl Halftime Show Performances

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF JANUARY 28, 2013

DEAR JERRY: Can you give me a list of reasonably famous vinyl era pop stars who never had a Top 10 song?

I know of two, Jimi Hendrix and Rick James, but there are bound to be others.
—Chubby in Cancun, Mexico

DEAR CHUBBY: Yes, but who is and isn't famous is a bit too subjective, not to mention expansive.

Quantifying the research, by equating fame to record sales, narrows the scope while retaining the core of your question.

Your mention of Jimi Hendrix and Rick James is interesting in that it provides the perfect framework for the task.

Hendrix is the top-selling LP artist (1948 through 1989) to not have a Top 10 single. His highest charting single, "All Along the Watchtower," only reached No. 20. Like several others in this exclusive gathering, Jimi was far more successful with albums than singles.

Rick James is much further down on the LP sales list, far enough for there to be over 300 total names between him and Hendrix, the majority of whom had at least one Top 10 hit (not counting specialized charts).

Twixt the Hendrix-James bookends are 56 familiar stars from nearly every music genre, each one owing their success more to long-play vinyl than to the 7-inch format:

1. Jimi Hendrix
2. Nancy Wilson
3. Frank Zappa/Mothers of Invention
4. Enoch Light and the Light Brigade
5. Elvis Costello
6. Dave Matthews Band
7. Bob Marley and the Wailers
8. Hank Williams Jr.
9. Waylon Jennings
10. B.B. King
11. Bill and Gloria Gaither
12. Black Sabbath
13. Emmylou Harris
14. Jimmy Smith
15. Bob James
16. Harry Connick Jr.
17. Poco
18. Mannheim Steamroller
19. Miles Davis
20. Iron Maiden
21. Pat Metheny
22. Lou Reed
23. Robert Goulet
24. Peter Nero
25. Crusaders (a.k.a., Jazz Crusaders)
26. Dwight Yoakam
27. Judas Priest
28. Vince Gill
29. Spyro Gyra
30. Earl Klugh
31. Herbie Mann
32. Herbie Hancock
33. Stevie Ray Vaughan
34. Emerson, Lake & Palmer
35. Jerry Vale
36. Teddy Pendergrass
37. Chet Atkins
38. Ted Nugent
39. Boston Pops Orchestra
40. Sammy Hagar
41. Leon Russell
42. Megadeth
43. Kris Kristofferson
44. John Gary
45. Charley Pride
46. John Mayall
47. Merle Haggard
48. Traffic
49. George Winston
50. Jack Jones
51. Nine Inch Nails
52. Blue Oyster Cult
53. Stephen Stills
54. Marshall Tucker Band
55. Al Jarreau
56. Robert Plant
57. David Sanborn
58. Rick James

Though not on the list of top album sellers, here are three R&B stars whose significant singles sales, without reaching the Pop Top 10, qualifies them for inclusion: Bobby Bland; Solomon Burke; and Chuck Jackson.

DEAR JERRY: I'm writing about the music in the 1969 western comedy, "The Good Guys and the Bad Guys," starring Robert Mitchum and George Kennedy.

It begins with some pretty dramatic orchestration, and some singing about "a man grown old." I have asked music stores for the theme for "The Good Guys and the Bad Guys," but was told no soundtrack record exists for that film.

If I ever hear it again, it will have to be with your help.
—Claudette Jefferson, Evansville, Ind.

DEAR CLAUDETTE: I can help, only because you said "hear it" rather than "find the record."

The actual title, "The Ballad of Marshal Flagg," makes no mention of guys, good or bad. The singer of this Ned Washington tune is Glenn Yarbrough.

While there is no soundtrack for this Warner Bros. film, I expected to at least find this cut on one of Yarbrough's records, specifically among the five he made for W.B. (1968-1971). I could not. It may not have been issued apart from the soundtrack.

However, "Marshall Flagg," Robert Mitchum's character, is easily enjoyed on YouTube. Keywords: glenn yarbrough flagg

IZ ZAT SO? From the prolific pen of lyricist Ned Washington came dozens of impressive and award-winning songs. Here is just a sampling of Ned's more memorable titles:

1932: "I Don't Stand a Ghost of a Chance with You"
1932: "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You"
1932: "Smoke Rings"
1933: "A Hundred Years from Today"
1938: "The Nearness of You"
1940: "When You Wish upon a Star"
1944: "Stella By Starlight"
1947: "Green Dolphin Street"
1950: "My Foolish Heart"
1952: "High Noon (Do Not Forsake Me)"
1954: "Hajji Baba (Persian Lament)"
1954: "The High and the Mighty"
1956: "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral"
1956: "Wild Is the Wind"
1957: "The 3:10 to Yuma"
1958: "Rawhide"
1960: "The Unforgiven"
1961: "Town Without Pity"

In 1972, Ned Washington (1901-1976) was appropriately enshrined in the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

Sam Roberts to Give 'The Inhuman Condition' First-Ever Vinyl Pressing Through Paper Bag Records

AVAILABLE MARCH 5TH ON LIMITED EDITION 180 GRAM BLUE VINYL

For the first time ever since its 2002 release, The Inhuman Condition is being released on vinyl. This six-song EP marked the breakthrough for Canadian favourite Sam Roberts. The Inhuman Condition has reached certified gold status and sold over 50,000 copies to date, making it one of the most successful and bestselling EP's by a Canadian band in the history of Canadian recorded music.

The Inhuman Condition, was a heaven-sent prophecy from the classic-pop gods translated into street-level terms, and while there was no denying Sam’s way with ultra-addictive melody, he also displayed astonishing breadth in just six tracks, from knockout power-pop punches ('Don’t Walk Away Eileen) and moody folk mysticism ('Brother Down,' the official soundtrack of summer 2002) to extended psych-pop jams ('Where Have All the Good People Gone?) and middle-finger-waving rockers ('This is How I Live').

Sam and the band have decided to release just 500 copies of the limited edition 180 gram blue vinyl, making it a real souvenir for fans of the band. The EP includes the original versions of hits ‘Brother Down’ and ‘Where Have All the Good People Gone’.

Tracklisting:
1. Don’t Walk Away Eileen
2. Brother Down
3. Where Have All The Good People Gone
4. Everything Was Alright
5. My Love Is Freeing
6. This Is How I Live
