ZOZOBRA Announce New Album Details

Premiere New Song "Black Holes"

Boston, MA's ZOZOBRA have revealed the details behind their latest release Savage Masters, due out April 2nd on LP/Digital via Brutal Panda Records.

The brainchild of Caleb Scofield (Cave In, Old Man Gloom), ZOZOBRA formed in 2006 and quickly released two crushing full-lengths of atmospheric sludge metal, Harmonic Tremors (2007) and Bird of Prey (2008).   Now five years later, the band has re-emerged with Savage Masters, their most aggressive and straightforward release to date.  Bursting out the gate with a bold, determined purpose, Savage Masters is an unrelenting fury of post-hardcore ferocity and sludge-tinged amplifier crunch.  This release, featuring long-time Cave In bandmates Adam McGrath (guitars) and J.R. Conners (drums), proves once and for all that ZOZOBRA are a veritable force to be reckoned with.  Savage Masters was produced and recorded by Andrew Schneider (Unsane, Pelican) and contains stunning artwork by English alchemist Glyn Smyth (Unearthly Trance, Wolves in the Throne Room, Cough).

****FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE****

MONDO RELEASES THEHAUNTING AND BEAUTFIUL “POLTERGEIST” SCORE SOUNDTRACK ON LIMITED EDTION VINYL

Austin, TX--- Wednesday, February 13, 2013 --- Mondo, the collectible art division of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, is excited to announce the release of Jerry Goldsmith’s Poltergeist score on limited edition vinyl. Combining a love for film music and beautiful artistic renderings, Mondo commissioned original cover art from We Buy YourKids, the duo of Australian illustrators Sonny Day and Biddy Maroney.  The Poltergeist 2-disc vinyl will be available for purchase for $25 on February 22 via MondoTees.com andwill include a small portion of randomly inserted clear vinyl copies.  The full track list appears at the bottom and includes 5 tracks never before released on vinyl.

The Poltergeist vinyl soundtrack release continues Mondo’s commitment to crafting beautiful packaging for scores they love and adds to an eclectic collection that now includes The Beyond, Deadly Spawn, Maniac and the upcoming vinyl release for Drive.  Much more is on the horizon for 2013.

JerryGoldsmith's soundtrack for Steven Spielberg's Poltergeist formed a significant part of the 1982 film's conceptual strength.  Known for the intensity of his thematic exposition, Goldsmith designs the Poltergeist soundtrack to elaborately ground the film between the promise of suburban repose andthe malevolent unknown. Beginning in innocence with a classic rendition of the "Star-Spangled Banner," the soundtrack parallels the film's intrusion of angry ghosts into the California home of the film's protagonists with dreadful strings and eerie keys. Goldsmith then switches to airier strings and an ethereal flute to denote the family's fumbling after their daughter, Carol Anne, is abducted. Utilizing frenzied horn blasts and a sudden lapse into atonalism, the composer ominously signifies the emergence of the Beast. Goldsmith, seemingly effortless, concludes the frantic drama of "Escape From Suburbia" in stark contrast with the sweet and child-like tones of "Carol Anne's Theme," elegantly illustrating the dignity and range that his orchestral scores for horror modeled within the genre.

Mondo previously collaborated with We Buy Your Kids for a gallery show, “Tina’s Mom’s Boyfriend,” in November.  We Buy Your Kids began working together in 2006, creating screen-printed posters for local concerts.  Since then, their client list has expanded to include film, print, huge corporations, and galleries.  Often making art that the squares think is weird, they are the perfect collaborator for the Poltergeist soundtrack artwork.

For the exact sale time on February 22 follow @MondoNews on Twitter.  Full track list below, including 5 tracks (#1, #3, #4, #6 and #9) that appear on vinyl for the first time.

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 11, 2013

DEAR JERRY: For over a quarter-century you have been coming to the rescue of confused and confounded music lovers. Now you can add me to that list.

While looking over a list I received of records for sale, I spotted this item:

Jerry Wallace "In the Misty Moonlight"/"Cannon Ball" (Challenge 59246)

As you know, "In the Misty Moonlight" was a huge hit for Jerry, and I have it. However, my copy has "Even the Bad Times Are Good" on the reverse side.

In fact, I have never heard of a Jerry Wallace song titled "Cannon Ball."

What does come to mind is the popular instrumental of that title by Duane Eddy. Did Jerry do a version of that music, but with words added?

Or, did the dealer simply make a mistake when preparing the list? I catch typos all the time on these things.
—Scotty Walters, Dayton, Ohio

DEAR CONFUSED AND CONFOUNDED: Your dilemma is reasonable, considering this story has enough twists to inspire a mini, mini-series.

The adventure begins in the summer of 1963, with the debut single by the Soul Surfers, "Cannon Ball" coupled with "Home from Camp" (Challenge 9209). Both are instrumentals.

This "Cannon Ball," which bears no resemblance to Duane Eddy's 1959 hit, "Cannonball," is merely a rockin' rendition of the country classic, "Wabash Cannonball" (a.k.a., "Wabash Cannon Ball").

"Home from Camp" is the band's version of Allan Sherman's "Hello Mudduh, Hello Fadduh (A Letter from Camp)."

About a year later (June 1964), Jerry Wallace's "In the Misty Moonlight" came out backed with "Even the Bad Times Are Good" (Challenge 59246).

As this great Cindy Walker tune headed for the Top 20, and on its way to being Wallace's biggest hit since "Primrose Lane" (1959), some stations began playing "Even the Bad Times Are Good."

After just two months, Challenge became so concerned about wasting a potential A-side that they replaced "Even the Bad Times Are Good" with "Cannon Ball," yet the selection number (59246) remained unchanged.

Now you know the list you received is accurate.

Having a humdrum filler for a B-side, "In the Misty Moonlight" ran its course without flip-side competition.

Jerry's next single came out in October, and of course it was "Even the Bad Times Are Good," this time backed with "Spanish Guitars."

Oops!

Nothing about "Spanish Guitars" is humdrum.

Challenge, and especially their co-owner and operations manager, Joe Johnson, must have been exasperated to once again see a B-side get as much or more airplay and juke box spins than the A-side.

This was especially true in southwestern markets near Mexico, such as Houston and San Diego, where "Spanish Guitars" made the local charts while "Even the Bad Times Are Good" was ignored.

Nationally, neither side made the Top 100, partly due to the split airplay. The other reason involved this British Invasion thing, the effect of which left roughly 20% fewer chart spots available for non-UK artists.

Despite the challenges Challenge faced in their effort to turn "Even the Bad Times Are Good" into a hit, they were not alone in this regard.

In mid-July 1969, Liberty Records had Jerry record a new version of "Even the Bad Times Are Good."

Unfortunately, this effort (Liberty 56155) didn't fare any better than the 1964 recordings, though it did briefly make the radio playlists of numerous country stations. For two weeks in May 1970, the single appeared on Billboard's country survey, but only reached No. 74.

Several other famous singers recorded "Even the Bad Times Are Good." Besides Jerry Wallace, the tune was waxed by: Carl Belew (though not until 1965, even though he and Clyde Pitts wrote the song); Mickey Gilley (1974); Sonny James (1965); George Jones &

Tammy Wynette (1976); Ray Pillow (1964); Connie Smith & Nat Stuckey (1973); and Conway Twitty (1973).

In 1967, a year without a significant Belew-Pitts "Even The Bad Times Are Good" recording, the Tremeloes moved into the Top 40 here and the Top 5 in Britain with a totally different song of the same title.

IZ ZAT SO? Considering how renowned and recognizable "Wabash Cannonball" is, one might find something fishy about the writing credit for "Cannon Ball." Both Challenge 9209 and 59246 name only Joe Johnson.

The most likely reason this track was chosen to replace "Even the Bad Times Are Good" is it allowed Johnson to share in the royalties for one side of a very successful single ("In the Misty Moonlight").

I am not aware of anyone challenging Mr. Johnson's writing claim for "Wabash Cannonball," though he was neither the first nor the last to do so.

Most recordings credit A.P. Carter, of the Carter Family. They had the first recorded version in 1929.

Several have no songwriting credits whatsoever. Among those are Bill Carlisle's Kentucky Boys (Decca 46045), Hugh Cross (Columbia 15439), and some early 78s by Roy Acuff and His Crazy Tennesseans (Columbia, Okeh, Vocalion, etc.). Subsequent Acuff issues do credit A.P. Carter.

Few women sang about the Cannonball, but Kay Starr did, and her Capitol 78s can be found with either A.P. Carter or "Traditional" where the writer is shown. Interestingly, Kay is accompanied by guitarist Merle Travis and His Orchestra.

Finally, Jerry Reed, Lonnie Donegan, and Dicky Doo, much like Joe Johnson, list themselves directly under the title.

Opinions vary regarding who wrote what and when, but what is known is that combined singles sales of "The Wabash Cannonball" now exceed 10 million copies. .

BIG DEAL - NEW ALBUM JUNE GLOOM– JUNE 4th, 2013

Big Deal introduced themselves with their emotive bedroom guitar ballads and electric chemistry last year via their debut release Lights Out. This June the London based duo of Kacey Underwood and Alice Costelloe are back with brand new album, June Gloom (June 4th, 2013) and a bold new sound.
Last year we laid out hints of a new record with “terdactol”– a lavish whirlwind of guitars, keys and percussion that assaults the senses and unleashes all of that pent up craving in one humid wave of sound. Thoughtfully arming you with a soundtrack for those tempestuous summer days June Gloom, like any good summer romance, will leave you enraptured.

Fleshing out their delicate, nocturnal tones Kacey and Alice take their sound to deeper, darker and more intoxicating height, courtesy of producer Rory Attwell (Veronica Falls, PAWS, Male Bonding) and a full band featuring bass and drums.

As a result, the 11 other tracks here are an exploration of the newfound confidence of ‘teradactol’, with a refinement and bold directness. If Big Deal’s earlier tracks felt emotionally lacerating, this new body of work is noisy, boisterous, with a more than assured melodic hook. This evolution is made defiantly clear in the opener ‘golden light‘, which deliberately unhinges the listener by opening with sweetly strummed chords and interlocking vocals before building to a rousing climax. Similarly, ‘dream machines’ crests on a jagged undertow of pounding drums, and the sinister ‘pillow’ gradually opens up to become something vast, scorched and desolate. The pair infuse the volume with their own inimitable, off-kilter take on angst-ridden emotional terrain; on the aptly titled ‘pristine’, they sing, “darkness wash over me, I let it in, it let me be”, while on the otherwise upbeat ‘call and i’ll come’ Costelloe plaintively asks, “What if no one else compares/ what if no one else cares?” It all reaches a beautiful crescendo with the finale ‘close your eyes’, which explodes from an almost unbearably intimate confessional (“I won’t ask why/ if it was love/ we let it die”) into a coruscating maelstrom that is as indelibly affecting as it is thrilling.

With June Gloom, Big Deal has expanded their sonic palette without losing any of their potency.

Megadeth - The System Has Failed

Dave Mustaine resurrected Megadeth in 2004 by releasing The System Has Failed. Infused with melodic songwriting, this is an outstanding Megadeth album, if not, the best Metal Album of 2004!

When Dave Mustaine was diagnosed with radial neuropathy (strained nerves in his left arm and hand) in 2002, it almost meant the end of Megadeth after two decades of thrash metal. Megadeth's first years are deemed legendary with classic albums such as Rust In Peace and Countdown To Extinction. Then in 2004 Mustaine resurrected Megadeth and released The System Has Failed. A surprise return including Chris Poland on guitar whom Mustaine fired after the masterful Peace Sells album. This re-pairing makes the album even more ferocious than the good old fashioned Megadeth thrash is all about.

Steve Earle - Copperhead Road

Steve Earle released Copperhead Road in 1988. Often referred to as Earle's first Rock record, Earle himself calls it the world's first blend of Heavy Metal and Bluegrass. Whatever you call it, the album introduces Country music's storytelling and three-chord structures to Rockabilly and contemporary Rock. The first half of the record contains mainly political tracks dealing with poverty, war veterans, the War on Drugs and former president Ronald Reagan whereas the second half is much more personal, containing slower tempo love songs. For the song "Johnny Come Lately" Earle is backed by The Pogues.

Jeff Beck Group - "the orange album"

Originally released in 1972, Jeff Beck Group was the fourth and final studio album for the legendary group. The band fully exploits the wildly unique instrumentation of Beck, a classical/jazz oriented pianist in Max Middleton, the soul/groove of Clive Chaman on bass, Cozy Powell's steady drumming and the expressive vocals of Bob Tench. This innovative music was way ahead of its time. The album features some of the most inspired lead playing of Beck's career.

Beck's guitar arrangements and performances are quite unlike anything from that era, a master pushing the creative envelope. His command of both right and left-hand techniques is truly awesome. The tracks feature multi-layered electric guitars, electric sitars, Beck's wah-wah touch, inspirational slide playing and two-hand tapping all beautifully performed and mixed. The tones he gets out of his guitar are unlike anything he had ever done.

The mid-tempo guitar driven blues of "Ice Cream Cakes" is the perfect album opener. The irresistible groove of "Goin' Down" has good slide and lead playing.  "Glad All Over" is one of his all time best songs with sharp leads and great piano lines. The funky and jazzy "Sugar Cane" flat-out rocks, and "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You" is a soulful Bob Dylan cover. Another cover, Don Nix's classic "Going Down"  has nice vocals by Tench and Middleton's gospel-tinged intro is absolutely perfect. "Highways" is a slow blues song driven by Beck's amazing use of power chords and strange and exotic leads. Two instrumentals are featured on Jeff Beck Group, the quite lovely Ashford and Simpson tune, "I Can't Give Back The Love I Feel For You" and "Definitely Maybe," one of his Beck's known songs, features a beautiful slide guitar and an emotional melody line accompanied by gorgeous harmonies.

Jeff Beck Group is a Jeff Beck showcase and one of the finest pieces of blues/rock in the history of the genre. Jeff Beck's truly inspired and creative playing is extraordinarily fluid and plain genius in a class of the top echelon of guitarists.

The record was produced by Steve Cropper of Booker T & The M.G.'s.

Side 1
1 Ice Cream Cakes
2 Glad All Over
3 Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You
4 Sugar Cane
5 I Can't Give Back The Love I Feel For You

Side 2
1 Going Down
2 I Got To Have A Song
3 Highways
4 Definitely Maybe

COMING SOON

Stephane Grappelli /David Grisman - LIVE

Exhibit Records is proud to present:
One of the most exciting of the many Stephane Grappelli recordings. In a sense this album represents a passing of the torch, as the greatest jazz violinist of all, the immortal Stephane Grappelli, bridges two generations of great acoustic jazz musicians - from his all-time classic 1930s recordings with the Hot Club of France (and a legendary partnership with the great guitarist Django Reinhardt - probably the most famous jazz partnership outside of the United States, and the most famous jazz string band in the world) to this remarkable recording with mandolinist David Grisman and his band featuring Mark O'Conner, Rob Wasserman, Tiny Moore and Mike Marshall Grappelli was incomparable in his Hot Club of France days, and he hadn't lost a beat by the time of this recording almost 50 years later. Grisman's music was greatly influenced by Reinhardt and Grappelli, and this album represents a kind of tribute to those great pioneers of acoustic swing music - but it's much more than just a nostalgic nod to the past. It's a historic recording in its own right, and the music is truly wonderful. Grisman and Grappelli sound as if they'd been playing together for years, and the respect they have for each other is obvious throughout the entire set. It's not an exaggeration to say that Grappelli and Grisman are two of the very best and most innovative musicians (especially on acoustic string instruments) of the 20th century, and it's a real treat to get to hear them play together on this recording. They are absolute masters who have produced some of the finest, most beautiful, moving, virtuoso music on the planet.

The tracks are "jazz greatest hits" like "Shine," "Tiger Rag," "Sweet Georgia Brown," "Satin Doll" and "Misty" with a medley of "King of the Gypsies" music. Essential music with more than its share of great solos, a blend of Bluegrass and Jazz, and one of few albums of its kind to make the Billboard charts.

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 4, 2013

DEAR JERRY: I hope you can do for me what you've done for many others.

My latest entertainment addiction is "The Forsythe Saga," the 2002 mini-series.

If you've seen it, you'd know that nearly every episode ends with the same song. It's just a guess, but the title may be "Life Is a Dance." They don't put a name on it.

Since it is heard only at the end while the credits roll, I don't know if it would be considered their theme.

Either way, I can't locate this music anywhere (Pandora, iTunes, Rhapsody, etc.). What I do find, but don't need, is a book of the same title.
—Rochelle Jones, Lancaster, Pa.

DEAR ROCHELLE: It's your addiction, but has John Forsythe ("Charlie's Angels," "Dynasty," etc.) somehow infiltrated your thinking?

I ask because John Galsworthy's original trilogy, and the films they inspired for theater and television, are about the Forsyte family, not Forsythe. The difference may or may not have hindered your search, but it seems you'd want to get the name right.

First published in 1906, with sequels over the next 14 years, Galsworthy's "Forsyte Saga" is still among Britain's Top 125 Best Loved Novels, according the BBC's Big Read Poll.

As for the title you actually wrote about, there is no official "Theme from Forsyte Saga." Yet, the tune you hear over the end credits, titled "Irene's Song," is often referred to as the show's theme.

"Life is a dance we must learn" is merely an oft-heard line in "Irene's Song."

Irene Herron-Forsyte, played by Gina McKee, is the story's most compelling character. Of the 25 tracks on the 2002 Universal Classics soundtrack album, eight are about Irene who married into the Forsyte clan — twice.

So important is Irene that the first U.S. film adaptation (1949) is even titled "That Forsyte Woman," with Greer Garson cast in the starring role.

"Irene's Song," composed for the 2002 "Forsythe Saga" by Geoffrey Burgon (music) and Jacqueline Kroft (lyrics), is performed by the renowned opera star, Bryn Terfel.

Soon after (2003), the Prince of Wales honored Terfel, making the Welshman a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, and thereafter designated as Bryn Terfel CBE.

In 2006, he received the Queen's Medal for Music, an annual award for one's contribution to the musical life of Great Britain.

DEAR JERRY: I thought I could solve my own music mystery, but I now realize I need your help.

None of the Billboard record history or survey chart books credit Lou Monte as having a hit song before "Lazy Mary," from early 1958.

However, about a year earlier there was a big hit in New England by Lou. I know this because I recall where I lived then, where I was in school, and how I faithfully I listened to the Top 40 stations.

About half the song is sung in Italian, so the title may also be Italian. Either way, I can't identify it.

Can you help me close this case?
—Wes Marlowe, Woonsocket, R.I.

DEAR WES: Because you seem certain about the year, I confined the search to 1957, a year in which Lou Monte had eight songs on four singles.

None of those made Billboard, as you know, but "Roman Guitar" (RCA 6769) did hold the No. 50 spot for a couple of weeks on Cash Box — exactly one year before "Lazy Mary."

The clincher came when I spotted "Roman Guitar" sitting at No. 2 on WCOP's "Forty Top Tunes of Greater Boston," for the week of March 4, 1957.

You are right about its popularity in that area. In fact, only Elvis Presley's "Too Much" prevented "Roman Guitar" from reaching No. 1 in Boston.

Case closed.

IZ ZAT SO? For the record, "Lazy Mary (Luna Mezzo Mare)" was not Monte's first hit song. Four years earlier, accompanied by Hugo Winterhalter and His Orchestra, Lou made the Top 10 with "Darktown Strutters Ball (Italian Style)" (RCA Victor 5611).

As is more often than not the case with recording artists, not every release becomes a hit. That is certainly true for Lou Monte and his first eight years with RCA.

From his debut single (1952) to his last before switching to Roulette (1960), then to Reprise (1961), RCA Victor issued 31 singles.

Considering that only two, "Darktown Strutters Ball" and "Lazy Mary," reached the national Top 40, RCA showed phenomenal belief in Monte, but success eluded them.

When Lou joined fellow amici, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, at Reprise Records, everything changed.

In 1962, with just his fifth Reprise single, "Pepino the Italian Mouse" (R-20,106), Monte reached the Billboard Top 5 for the first time.

Music History - February 6

from an old friend in vinyl, cheers for another groovy adventure!

Now available...Vinyl Lives II!

The groovy adventures begun in the first Vinyl Lives (2010) continue in Vinyl Lives II. Stores covered include Dusty Groove (Chicago), Criminal Records (Atlanta) and The Electric Fetus (three Minnesota locations). Nine record collectors are also interviewed. Their voices add an important dimension--and further help to amplify the role of independent record stores--and vinyl!--in the digital age.

Here’s what Terry Stewart, President and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame had to say about Vinyl Lives II:

“Let’s face it, as collectors we chase this stuff as much for the stories we can tell versus the sounds in the grooves. In that sense, James Goss has certainly delivered to us true believers another double shot of our babies love…so drink up!”
Also, fans of record stores and vinyl records still delight in the first Vinyl Lives (Aventine Press, 2010). Independent record stores chronicled include Amoeba Music (Berkeley, San Francisco and Los Angeles), Twist & Shout in Denver and the Louisiana Music Factory in New Orleans.

In 2010, Vinyl Lives was an Editor’s Pick in Goldmine magazine:

"Anybody who has an interest in record collecting and the ongoing plight of the independent record store will find Vinyl Lives a necessary read."--Pat Prince, Editor

Please note: Both books are Print-on-Demand titles.

Per book cost: $10.00, plus shipping and handling.

Press Release - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Feb 5, 2013

New Austin Music Reality Show to Focus on "Classic" Song Stories and Remakes.

Cover Me is a "Behind the Music" series based in Austin, Texas. It will feature a group of musicians and singers collectively known as "The Cover Kings". The show is currently running a campaign on Kickstarter.com.

This musical biography will explore some of the the greatest hit songs of our time and the artists that made them famous. Cover Me will examine some 90 iconic artists ranging from ABBA to ZZ Top, relate the story of the song and the artist - and then create a modern interpretation of the material. Combining new music technology and Austin's world-class talent pool, the Cover Kings will create fresh versions of many hit songs from decades past and present.

The success of dozens of talent search and music reality shows - from American Idol to Glee and X-factor, clearly demonstrate a mass appeal for modern takes on former hits. Through these shows,
Billboard has charted hundreds of new cover versions in the top 100. Indeed, showcasing classic songs and artists are large part of the draw of these popular shows.

Cover Me producer and creator, Daniel Sage, says of the show, “It is our wish to inspire and be inspired by these gems of craftsmanship and make them relevant once again. Part of our unique sound is to incorporate the infectious beats that drive dance and rap music and still maintain a live band setting. So, if you've ever been curious to hear Cat Stevens over a Jay-Z beat or what blending Sinatra and Steve Miller would sound what like – you'll love what what we like to call our sonic makeovers.”

Sage continued “our journey seeks to blend Austin's greatest resource - the gifted musician - with the classic artists they are being asked to cover. Our quest is to capture the essence of pop music thru the
vehicle that every artist pours heart and soul into – the song itself.”

The web audience will be a source material for many sections of the show, including opinion and interview snippets as well as voting on their favorite Cover King remakes to be performed live in Austin at the end of each episode. Through these many interactive tools, the audience will be part of discovering and breaking the next Stevie Ray Vaughn, Spoon or Dixie Chicks.

Austin, universally known as the "Live Music Capital of the World," has more than doubled in size in the past 10 years and, with over 200 live venues, has been a place for musicians to thrive and grow.
Having honed their craft in other American cities, they have now chosen Austin as home. It's become a town of happy transplants and dreamers, those who have thrown caution to the wind to make a better, weirder life for themselves. The show will also tell their personal stories. Stories played out to the greatest soundtrack ever compiled - the last 50 years of country, pop, rock, and soul music.

Cover Me will take you through the entire process - from talent auditions, to arranging the songs and choosing the instrumentation - to recording, mixing, and final editing.

The Cover Kings intend to record 100 cover songs and offer them as single downloads and as a 10 Album Set. Cover Me will include 12 video episodes and 24 audio podcasts and encourage other Austin artists – painters, graphic artists, filmmakers - to contribute to the show.
