Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF MARCH 4, 2013

DEAR JERRY: In the mid-1980s, while enrolled at the University of Texas in Austin, I often listened to KLBJ-FM. I liked their album-oriented format, and that they expressed no noticeable concern over hit singles or record charts.

One progressive rock cut they played tells of two people at their class reunion, reminiscing about their teen romance that died when the girl pursued stardom.

I haven't heard this song in nearly 30 years, and have no clues as to the title or the singer.

Based on its Byrds-like psychedelic guitar riff (e.g., "Eight Miles High"), it could be from the late '60s.

There was no room then in my budget for records, but now I can afford it and would love to have this piece of my past.
—Martin Roth, Tucson, Ariz.

DEAR MARTIN: Fortunately, this piece of your past is easily available on several different CD and vinyl collections, most in the $8 to $12 range.

The track you want is "Always Drive a Cadillac," written in 1986 by Larry Raspberry for the Everly Brothers' "Born Yesterday" LP (Mercury 826142).

"Always Drive a Cadillac" is an absolutely brilliant recording in every respect, and that sizzling guitar you recall is the artistry of Albert Lee.

DEAR JERRY: When I think back to when radio was the primary source for the top records, I am reminded of how often some stations abused their power by banning songs for the silliest of reasons.

Among those I recall are the Playmates' "Beep Beep" (encouraged reckless driving); Bobby Darin's "Mack the Knife" (glamorized organized crime); and even an instrumental "Rumble," by Link Wray, (sanctioned gang violence).

Now in an era when radio is no longer the dominant supplier of music, do they even bother to ban anything? All they need do is just ignore what they don't like.
—Clark Forcier, Greenville, S.C.

DEAR CLARK: Your assessment of radio's changing significance in the digital age is supported by the number of one-time Top 40 outlets that switched to a talk, news, sports, religion, or other non-music income-generating format.

The three examples you give are true, and here are just a few more that may be hard to believe:

The Coasters' "Charlie Brown" (misbehaving at school); Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday" (depression, suicide); John Zacherle's "Dinner with Drac" (cannibalism); Ella Fitzgerald's "Love for Sale" (prostitution); Paul Simon's "Kodachrome" (product mention); and countless songs either overtly sexual, advocating drug use, or promoting some brand of religion to the exclusion of others.

We don't hear much these days about banning music, per se, but there is one fairly recent case not many in the U.S. know about.

This is the strange story of a song being banned by the BBC's Radio 1, not based on something they discovered by listening to it — rather by what they learned from reading a newspaper.

Until "The Guardian" ran an expose piece that came to their attention, Radio 1 aired "Style Attract and Play," by Shocka Featuring Honeyshot, unconcerned.

What Radio 1, which has a non-advertising policy, learned is that "Style Attract and Play" was an ad campaign for a hair gel product, and the song was created specifically to promote it.

Red-faced, Radio 1 responded thusly:

"The track was presented to Radio 1 in the usual way, via a legitimate promotions company, and we were not aware that it was a promotional tool for a hair product. As this was created by an advertising agency with the sole purpose of selling this product, and, since we do not play adverts, it is not something we will ever play again."

DEAR JERRY: What can you tell me about "Sail to Bombay, Sail to Rio," a beautiful song by Victoria's Voices? It was played often by the pop stations in this area, in the summer of 1964.

Did Victoria's Voices have other songs, or were they merely gathered to record this one tune? Are they perhaps known by another name.

Is "Sail to Bombay, Sail to Rio" available in any format?
—Warren M. Pischke, Brookfield, Wis.

DEAR WARREN: Victoria's Voices apparently were a Nashville-area bunch, assembled by Monument Records to provide just two tracks.

In addition to "Sail to Bombay, Sail to Rio," they also recorded "Daydreamer," and you'll find that on the B-side (Monument 847).

Other than that one single, which is usually available for around five bucks, I know of no other music credited to Victoria's Voices. I have yet to find them on a CD.

Since we're talking about Nashville, some of the Voices may have done session work, but no other recordings exist by the group as a whole.

Unfortunately, the identities of the gals in Victoria's Voices remains Victoria's Secret.

IZ ZAT SO? In 1964, about 20% of the music played in America came from the UK; however, "Sail to Bombay, Sail to Rio" arrived by way of Germany. A year before the Monument session, German singing star, Margot Esken, popularized the same basic tune, but in German and with the title "Ob in Bombay, Ob in Rio" (Polydor 52 095). Rather than "Sail to Bombay, Sail to Rio," this translates as "Whether in Bombay, Whether in Rio." In 1964, Esken went back and recorded an English version titled "Sail to Bombay, Sail to Rio." This track is what inspired Victoria's Voices, though their lyrics do vary from Margot's.

Rodriguez - Searching For Sugar Man Vinyl 2-LP 2012

The story remains one of the music world's most unusual tales of the 1970s: an obscure debut LP by a Detroit singer-songwriter becomes a source of hope and inspiration to the anti-Apartheid movement in South Africa. Now, the story of Rodriguez and his cult album Cold Fact is the basis for Searching For Sugar Man, a riveting new documentary by filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul. Light In The Attic Records in partnership with Sony Legacy are honored to announce the release of the original motion picture soundtrack, comprising tracks from Cold Fact and its 1971 follow-up Coming From Reality - both reissued in 2008 and 2009 by Light In The Attic. The soundtrack begins with the otherworldly "Sugar Man" and acts as a primer to this long-overlooked musician's fusion of gritty funk, political poetry and blissful psych-folk.

Beware of Mr. Baker Contest

Following up on an earlier post Beware of Mr. Baker from Aris at SnagFilms, a New York-based film distributor and new to the CVR blog.  I have one download of the movie and a signed poster to give to the winner.  So the 20th email with the words "Beware of Mr. Baker Contest" in the subject line will be declared the winnerLimit one email entry per person

'Beware of Mr. Baker' is a vivid portrait of a rock icon, including the good, the bad and the over the top lifestyle of one of rock’s legendary wild men.

At home with rock ‘n’ roll monster Ginger Baker, Cream’s legendary scarlet-manned, hell-raising drummer. This no-holds-barred, sad, and hilarious portrait of the man referred to as rock’s first great drummer (and perhaps still its best) lets him tell his own story like only he can.

Eric Clapton, Johnny Rotten, Charlie Watts, and Lars Ulrich, Baker’s 4 wives, and 3 grown children all have something to say about him: “He’s a force of nature,” “he’s the greatest drummer any of us had ever heard,” “he’s mad,” and “he’s fairly consistently horrible” are just a few of them.

Ginger Baker looks back on his musical career with Cream and Blind Faith; his introduction to Fela Kuti; his self-destructive patterns and losses of fortune; and his current life inside a fortified South African compound.

Ginger Baker is, and was, a train wreck. Yet this film, like Baker's onstage playing, is always riveting, and something you can't look away from. Yet this film, like Baker’s onstage playing, is always riveting, and something you can’t look away from. ~ Charles Cross, Seattle Times

Beware of Mr. Baker

when we think of the best rock and roll drummers, just a few names come to mind and Ginger Baker would be on everybody's list.  Now, we can learn more about this complicated man, living a complicated life in a documentary called Beware of Mr. Baker.

Ginger Baker looks back on his musical career with Cream and Blind Faith; his introduction to Fela Kuti; his self-destructive patterns and losses of fortune; and his current life inside a fortified South African compound.

Director:   Jay Bulger  Writer:  Jay Bulger

Available via iTunes,  Order Today!

Ginger Baker

Born in South East London the same week the Nazis began bombing, Ginger Baker’s first memory was running after a train that carried his father off to death in WWII. From his music to his life, at the expense of family and fortune, Ginger would never be left behind on the tracks again.

Though best known for his work with Eric Clapton in Cream and Blind Faith, the world’s greatest drummer did not hit his stride until years later in 1972 when he drove the first Range Rover ever produced from London to Nigeria in pursuit of the African rhythms and musical icon, Fela Kuti. There he found his Mecca of drumming, introducing the African beat and “world music” to the West, years before any other musicians in the field.

Unfortunately, Ginger’s African glory days were short-lived as he found himself looking down the barrel of a Nigerian officer’s machine gun. Signaling his departure from the continent and the loss of his fortune, Ginger returned to England where a pattern of divorces, self-destruction, and countless groundbreaking musical works continue on to Italy, California, Colorado, and current day South Africa where he lives inside a fortified compound with his 29-year-old internet bride and 39 polo ponies.

Chain smoking and ingesting copious amounts of morphine while sitting in his leather recliner, the 73-year-old reflects back on his life as we concurrently witness his current law suits, local disputes, and yet another chapter in his path of destruction. Unfortunately, Ginger’s ginger hair has faded, and we wonder if he is physically capable of saving himself by playing the instrument that has defined him. In his own words, “God is punishing me for my past wickedness by keeping me alive and in as much pain as he can. I wasn’t planning on living this long!” In true Ginger Baker fashion, 3 years into shooting the film, after squandering yet another fortune, Ginger Baker triumphantly returns to the stage. As he went on a 30 date sold out European tour, we were there to capture it.

The documentary includes stories from his ex-wives, children, and many of the greatest living musicians that worked with Ginger including Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Charlie Watts, Mickey Hart, Carlos Santana, Max Weinberg, Chad Smith, Femi Kuti, Neal Peart, Simon Kirke, Marky Ramone and many more.

This documentary is one such story – a marriage of the film and music worlds through the life of one of the most unforgettable and controversial musicians. He was there the night Jimi Hendrix died, shared the drugs, the music, the names, the groups, while stripping away the other voices as the conductor, time keeper, the master drummer of our time. Beware of Mr. Baker catapults the viewer into his beat – with every smash of the bass drum there is a man behind it smashing his way through life.

Jay Bulger (Writer/Director)

Jay Bulger attended Fordham University where he boxed in several New York Golden Glove boxing tournaments. Photographs of his fighting launched him onto the cover of Vogue and then modeling for brands such as Armani, Calvin Klein, Dolce & Gabbana, Kenneth Cole, Hermés, etc.

After a 2-year bout with cancer, Jay dedicated himself to writing and directing and has since published feature articles for Rolling Stone, New York Magazine, Harpers Bazaar, and many other publications. He has directed music videos and commercials for bands such as The Hold Steady, Nightmare of You, The Washington Social Club, Permanent Me, and Playradioplay; for labels including Island, Def Jam, Warner Brothers, East West, Vagrant, and French Kiss; and brands such as Pepsi and Disney.

For Jay’s article “In Search of Ginger Baker,” (Rolling Stone Magazine), Jay spent three months living with the rock legend in South Africa where Ginger has spent the previous decade living in seclusion. The article and the numerous hours of interviews Jay captured on film became the premise for Beware of Mr. Baker, and in the spring of 2010, Jay returned to South Africa with a small film crew to finish making the film.

Vinyl Lives Book Contest

heard from an old friend in vinyl James P. Goss and he has graciously given me two signed copies of his paperback book Vinyl Lives to give away to two of our lucky readers.  The first book blew me away, as you read the stories and tales of records that encompasses the vinyl record menu.

The second book follows the same path and Vinyl Lives II profiles record stores like the Electric Fetus (Minnesota), Dusty Groove (Illinois), Criminal (Georgia) and Jerry's (Pennsylvania). The stories of nine record collectors, all from different areas in the US are also included.

These books are written for the everyman and are bound to fill any collectors palette with tales of vinyl and the people behind the records.  You can learn more and order your copies today at James' website: VinylLives.com

The contest is simple.  The 9th emailer will receive a signed copy of Vinyl Lives and the 16th emailer will receive a signed copy of Vinyl Livess II.  Enter by emailing me at rbenson30@wi.rr.com with the words "Vinyl Lives" in the subject line.  Limit one email entry per person. Music History - March 1st

highlights:

On March 1, 1967, working at Abbey Road studios, London, the Beatles started recording a new John Lennon song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." Lennon's son, Julian, inspired the song with a nursery school drawing he called "Lucy — in the sky with diamonds." The picture, which was of a little girl with lots of stars, was his classmate - Lucy O’Donnell, who also lived in Weybridge, and attended the same school as Julian. Shortly after the song's release, speculation arose that the first letter of each of the title's nouns intentionally spelled LSD. Although Lennon denied this, the BBC banned the song. In a 2004 interview, Paul McCartney said that the song is about LSD, stating, "A song like 'Got to Get You Into My Life,' that's directly about pot, although everyone missed it at the time." "Day Tripper," he says, "that's one about acid. 'Lucy in the Sky,' that's pretty obvious. There's others that make subtle hints about drugs, but, you know, it's easy to overestimate the influence of drugs on the Beatles' music.

On March 1, 1973, Pink Floyd released their eighth studio album, 'The Dark Side of the Moon.'  The LP was an immediate success, topping the Billboard Top LPs & Tapes chart for one week. It subsequently remained in the charts for 741 weeks from 1973 to 1988, longer than any other album in history. With an estimated 50 million copies sold, it is Pink Floyd's most commercially successful album and one of the best-selling albums worldwide. It has twice been remastered and re-released, and has been covered in its entirety by several other acts. It spawned two singles, "Money" and "Time." In addition to its commercial success, 'The Dark Side of the Moon' is one of Pink Floyd's most popular albums among fans and critics, and is frequently ranked as one of the greatest rock albums of all time.

from our friends at Relapse

RINGWORM:  Sign To Relapse Records

Announce US Tour Dates

Relapse Records is extremely excited to announce the signing of Cleveland, OH metal/hardcore veterans Ringworm!  Formed in 1990, Ringworm (Human Furnace - Vocals, Matt Sorg - Guitar, John Comprix - Guitar, Ed Stephens - Bass, Danny Zink - Drums) has previously released six full-length records on labels Deathwish, A389 and Victory Records in addition to playing countless shows with the likes of Cro-Mags, Integrity, Kreator, Goatwhore, Nasum, and many others.  The band will be entering the studio to record their Relapse debut this April.  Vocalist Human Furnace commented on the signing:

"Throughout our existence I've felt that RINGWORM has always been the "black sheep", never quite fitting into any specific genre mold. Sometimes too metal for hardcore, other times too hardcore for metal. We enjoy distorting the line between the two and, often, completely destroying it. But I've always felt that we've never quite had a home that understood where we're coming from and embraced the fact what we are a "black sheep" and we aren't cookie-cut bullshit. We feel that we finally found that home. They understand that there are legions of black sheep out there that don't fit into society's "one size fits all" mold.  We couldn't be more excited to be more working with Relapse."

Additionally, the band will be hitting the road for a string of shows starting this Saturday in Reading, PA including dates with Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death, and Today Is The Day.  A complete listing of dates is included below.

SHARKMUFFIN

Release Debut 7-inch “The Lake” TODAY!

“Frontwoman Tarra Thiessen, who’s vocal performance on the track is A+, reminds a bit (in a very good way) of Chrissie Hynde.” -Blah Blah Blah Science

Dive Into Sharkmuffin's "The Lake" at Soundcloud

March 1, 2013 – The moment you have been waiting for is finally here! TODAY, Brooklyn outfit and newly claimed buzz band, SHARKMUFFIN have just released their debut 7” The Lake / Big.

Gaining accolades throughout the online music world, singer/guitarist Tarra Thiessen has been creating quite a frenzy with her vocals, being compared frequently to the likes of Chrissie Hynde and referred to as “Indie Rock's next great front woman.”

The standout single, “The Lake” is a living eulogy to a best friend lost in a sea of addiction. Thiessen grapples with her emotional disconnect by turning the tragic experience of her best friend's addiction into a triumphant tune that echoes love and loss.

Channeling the brilliant Riot Grrrl acts of years passed, such as Sleater-Kinney, Sharkmuffin has put a new twist on the genre, creating a boisterous sound that is truly their own deemed “Dirty Garage Pop.”

The combination of singer/guitarist Tarra Thiessen, alongside bassist Natalie Kirch with Drew Adler on drums, is deadly. Thiessen delivers gutsy vocals that will send shivers down your very spine. Jumping between gentle moans to rough, forceful screams, her vocals are sweetly complimented by Kirch's lighter, dreamier melodies which make you expect the unexpected. These Brooklynite-Punk-Rock-Debutants are smart, sassy and sexy....be on the lookout.

find this to be intriguing, will have to learn more and get back to you:

Out of Press Vinyl Pledge Site Beat Delete Launched by Ninja Tune

Launched at the start of 2013, Beat Delete is a specialised Kickstarter, a website which allows fans to potentially rescue lost vinyl releases.

Customers can pledge to buy a copy of a record currently out of stock by the label. When a certain level of pledges have been made, the record will be re-pressed and once again will become available to the wider world. In many cases, pledgers will receive numbered or exclusive limited editions, or other benefits outlined for each release.

Developed from an idea by a Ninja Tune employee and “powered” by the same label, the 2013 launch of Beat Delete responds to the lasting impact of the fire at the Sony-DADC warehouse in Edmonton during the summer 2011 riots which destroyed 3.2m releases. For independent labels, the cost of re-pressing the small releases that make up the bulk of their catalogue is hard to justify. According to the Beat Delete press release:

"It’s easy enough to put in an order of 1000 copies of something you know will sell through in a matter of weeks, but what about that record that may take several years to recoup the investment? That means warehousing costs on top of expensive shipping and manufacture, and many labels can’t afford to take that risk. As a result, we’re all – as music buyers – impoverished. There is less choice, less chance of coming across a little gem, less excitement. This is particularly true of vinyl, where the costs of re-pressing small quantities of a record are prohibitively high."

Since the beta launch of the site at the start of the year there have been steady orders. King Geedorah's - Take Me To Your Leader on Big Dada has been fully funded, Amon Tobin's Permutation and Bricolage LPs are both 80% complete, while Bonobo, Hexstatic, Roots Manuva and more are waiting for your support...

Beat Delete is already supported by the following labels: Accidental, Ninja Tune, Beggars, Big Dada, Brainfeeder, Cat Skills, Domino, Sunday Best, Tru Thoughts.

Beat Delete will be looking to consistently add new record labels and releases to the site. Any labels large or small who would like make available out of press products to the Beat Delete community please contact info@beatdelete.com
