Two and a half years ago, Erin Fein (Headlights) began to pen a series of songs that would become the music of Psychic Twin. These songs emerged as intensely personal, nervously rhythmic, and indebted to the '80s new-wave of her youth.
Now fleshed out by multi-instrumentalist Brett Sanderson (Headlights) and drummer Jonny Sommer, the band is releasing a brand new 7" containing two exclusive songs.
Strangers is limited to 500 copies on white vinyl.
Both songs on the 7" are streaming at the link below and if you pre-order now you will receive an INSTANT full-album MP3 download at checkout.
This week, we present three titles which have been long out of print! Allman Brothers Band (1980), Little Village (1992) and the debut album of the late, great Chris Whitley (1991).
Chris Whitley - Living With The Law (180 gram audiophile vinyl) (Insert)
The beautiful breakthrough album of Chris Whitley was released in 1991 and was immediate proof of his brilliant songwriting.
In a time when upbeat Pop Rock dominated the hit charts, Living With The Law had a somewhat dark and introvert quality. Its richness surfaces in the use of old-fashioned sounds such as slide guitars and banjos against a backdrop of subtly arranged rhythm tracks, whilst all the time carrying the splendid timbre of his voice. The native Texan tackles subjects such as drug abuse, loneliness and failure, making Living With The Law an incredibly honest and compelling album.
Living With The Law put Chris Whitley on the map, albeit under the radar of mainstream audiences. This is your chance to let Whitley in your life on heavy 180 gram vinyl!
Tracklisting: Side 1 1 Excerpt 2 Living With The Law 3 Big Sky Country 4 Kick The Stones 5 Make The Dirt Stick 6 Poison Girl 7 Dust Radio
Side 2 1 Phone Call From Leavenworth 2 I Forget You Every Day 3 Long Way Around 4 Look What Love Has Done 5 Bordertown
Little Village - Little Village (180 gram audiophile vinyl)
Little Village is the all-star lineup consisting of singer John Hiatt, guitarist Ry Cooder, bassist Nick Lowe and drummer Jim Keltner. These are the very same musicians that were responsible for recording John Hiatt's breakthrough album Bring The Family (1987).
Five years later they decided to reconvene under a new name and the result was the excellent Little Village. The magic between these guys is undeniably incendiary, they rock harder than they did on Bring The Family, grooving their way through 11 upbeat songs. The guys had fun recording and performing as Little Village, which shows throughout this superb album.
Unfortunately, there are no subsequent albums of this super-group, but that makes the album Little Village even more unique.
Tracklisting: Side 1 1 Solar Sex Panel 2 The Action 3 Inside Job 4 Big Love 5 Take Another Look
Side 2 1 Do You Want My Job 2 Don't Go Away Mad 3 Fool Who Knows 4 She Runs Hot 5 Don't Think About Her When You're Trying To Drive 6 Don't Bug Me When I'm Working
Allman Brothers Band - Reach For The Sky (180 gram audiophile vinyl) (Insert)
The band that has been through so much and then some released Reach For The Sky in 1980. The transition from their origins of groovy Blues Rock (with Duane Allman still in their ranks) to Country Rock had been completed around this time. Under the leadership of guitarist and original member Dickey Betts and founding member/organ player Gregg Allman the band churned out eight songs for this gospel-infused album. Reach For The Sky even attained a minor hit with the song "Angeline".
Tracklisting: Side 1 1. Hell And High Water 2. Mystery Woman 3. From The Madness Of The West 4. I Got A Right To Be Wrong
Side 2 1. Angeline 2. Famous Last Words 3. Keep On Keepin' On 4. So Long
Seattle-based indie punk and garage rock record label Tsurumi Records, will be releasing their first ever soundtrack for the underground indie horror flick The Revenant this Spring.
The Revenant soundtrack features music from label acts like garage punks The Beautiful Mothers and indie rockers The Second Academy, International acts Aqualush and La Mala Rodriguez, classical music from two companies and even an appearance from seminal underground sensation The Shaggies.
The label will issue just 500 vinyl copies of The Revenant soundtrack on limited edition picture discs, along with CDs and digital downloads, all available now for pre-sale at TsurumiRecords.com
“We are label focused on vinyl productions and this soundtrack is no different in that way,” enthuses label owner and Seattle resident Jeff Davis. “We think fans of the movie will want these as collector items.”
Three years ago Davis' good friend and independent film maker Kerry Prior, approached him about collaborating on a soundtrack for The Revenant; a modern take on a classic horror story, which he wrote, directed and produced.
“I've always been inspired by really good soundtracks, like Pulp Fiction's for example,” Davis continues. I was equally inspired to do this with Kerry because we share a similar aesthetic when it comes to art and and a similar ethos on how to make it.”
The childhood friends grew up together in Cleveland, OH listening to and paying punk rock.
In much the same way as the underground bands that are featured in the soundtrack, The Revenant is a movie with a clearly subversive tone, subtext and approach.
"It's a movie that wears it's punk ethic on its sleeve...perhaps this is why the movie had such a hard time finding mainstream distribution," postulates Prior.
The Revenant premiered in 2009 at Toronto's “After Dark” Fest, upon which they dubbed it one of the "10 Movies To See Before You Die." Then in actual theaters in 2010. Reviews ranging from diverse sources such as The Newark Star-Ledger to DreadCentral.com declare it "sure to become a cult classic."
The film focuses on Second Lieutenant Bart Gregory (David Anders), who is killed under mysterious circumstances in Iraq only to find out that he didn't really die. Rather, he is undead: a zombie-vampire hybrid, known as the Revenant. Bart needs blood to hold back decomposition and he finds his way around his new state against the dark backdrop of downtown Los Angeles.
The Revenant appears to be moving towards that cult status with a solid underground and online fan base that is growing daily. Every cult classic needs a killer soundtrack and now fans of The Revenant won't have to wait much longer.
The late, great composer/pianist/producer/MENSA member Tandyn Almer first emerged in pop culture consciouness as the writer of the 1966 smash single by The Association, “Along Comes Mary.” Its seemingly innocuous lyric about a girl became a point of intense scrutiny as rumors of marijuana references wafted through a society fraught with generational conflict. One of those listeners on the far side of the gap, Leonard Bernstein, recognized the song’s musical sophistication and deft wordplay as something noteworthy. Consequently, Bernstein chose Almer as an interview subject for his CBS News documentary Inside Pop: The Rock Revolution, which aired on Tuesday, April 25th, 1967. It was a groundbreaking special, with Almer's cool media attitude working well to calm the controversial storm surrounding the movement that would soon blossom into the Summer of Love.
If this were a Hollywood film script, Almer would have then been catapulted to the upper echelons of pop stardom, rubbing elbows with hottest hitmakers of the day. Instead, while he released one single of his own, “Degeneration Gap,” and wrote and produced several more pop-psyche gems, Almer’s career path took a much more enigmatic route. He did collaborate with fellow melodic savant Brian Wilson, most notably as the co-writer of “Sail On Sailor,” and published a songbook of his new compositions. In service of these songs, a 15-track demo LP was recorded and pressed in a small quantity by his publisher, Davon Music, to distribute to potential recording clients.
Through the years, word of this LP spread through the collecting world, its legend increasing with each telling and its price increasing with each resale for those lucky enough to find a copy. Included within this demonstration disc is the nasty, buzzing fuzztone and haunting vocals of the Purple Gang's version of “Bring Your Own Self Down,” the engaging Pop feel of “Find Yourself,” the smooth groove of "Anything You Want" and “Victims of Chance” (recorded as an instrumental by L.A. jazz combo The Afro Blues Quintet), along with the straight-ahead Folk-Rock of “About Where Love Is” and “Sunset Strip Soliloquy” – the latter about the atmosphere which led to the demonstrations of late '66. At long last, Sundazed Music has rescued this “holy grail” album and presents the first-ever commercial release of Along Comes Tandyn. A stunning collection covering a wide stylistic range, it is a resounding confirmation Almer’s harmonic genius. After one listen, you’ll understand why Tandyn was always the smartest guy in the room.
TRACK LIST: 1. Find Yourself 2. You Turn Me Around 3. Anything You Want 4. About Where Love Is 5. Everytime I Take You Back To Me 6. There’s Gotta Be A Way 7. Alice Designs 8. Face Down In The Mud 9. FUZZ-FILLED DREAMS & SITAR THINGS…
Artist: Bob Irwin and the Pluto Walkers Title: The Throwaway Age LP 5450 - UPC 090771545015 – 180 Gram Vinyl LP
As a renowned producer and the driving force behind the seminal reissue label Sundazed Music, Bob Irwin has been responsible for bringing a dizzying amount of vintage instrumental rock ’n’ roll to fans around the globe. Now, as lead guitarist and composer of the Pluto Walkers, the lifelong guitar obsessive and walking encyclopedia of musical knowledge adds his own distinctive creative vision to the pantheon of effortlessly cool instrumental combos.
On the Pluto Walkers’ debut album The Throwaway Age, the multitalented foursome delivers a dazzling dose of scintillating surf/drag/sci-fi/exotica nuggets that are as imaginative as they are catchy, looking to the future while conjuring up the playful warmth of the ’50s and ’60s instrumental classics that originally captured Irwin’s imagination as a fan. Indeed, the Pluto Walkers pull off the tricky task of channeling their far-flung influences into music that’s fresh and original, merging insistent guitar hooks with all manner of inventive arrangements and ear-tickling sonic embellishments. The resulting album delivers a one-of-a-kind musical experience that’s effortlessly fresh and original, yet firmly rooted in the unpretentious musical values that Irwin has consistently championed in his work with Sundazed.
Behind its snazzy faux-movie-soundtrack cover art, The Throwaway Age’s sonic smorgasbord encompasses dragstrip swagger, board-busting surf stylishness, swinging sitar-jangle, biker-flick punch and international intrigue. Also featured on the album are four memorable tracks by the Pluto Walkers’ mysterious alter-ego outfit El Futuro Sonidos, who offer moody, lilting acoustic textures with a Latin touch and a tropical twist.
Available both as a streamlined CD and a handsomely appointed 180-gram vinyl LP, The Throwaway Age is the perfect soundtrack for any space-age beach party, and the ideal accompaniment for your next interplanetary road trip.

Artist: Bob Irwin and the Pluto Walkers Title: Coffin Dragger / Arabesque SPIN 027 - UPC 662222002776 – 7” Vinyl on Colored Wax!
Think the true spirit and sound of the ’60s exists only in the ring-worn covers and greyed out grooves of your discs from 1967?!? “Coffin Dragger,” the second single by Bob Irwin and the Pluto Walkers, will change—and blow—your mind! Specially selected from the musicians’ new full-length album, The Throwaway Age, this disc is as perfect an encapsulation of a lost era as you will find—a stomping, fuzztone-infected tribute to the legendary biker film soundtracks of decades past, recorded with the same kinds of techniques and energy as the much-coveted originals...
“Arabesque” is an audio voyage into a kind of other world where Henry Mancini and Chocolate Watch Band might’ve made magic music together in a garage, combining a brilliant melody with a snarling, complex and distorted arrangement, prominently featuring layers of fuzz and a vintage Ace Tone Top-5 keyboard. This performance, a cover of a rare Ventures B-side, was conceived during sessions for a rarities-based tribute album to the group, and is available only on this 45.
Both sides of this single were recorded with the nearly forgotten artistry of true 1960s mic’ing and placement, and mixed to authentic monophonic sound. Slide it onto your changer somewhere between your Arrows and Zakary Thaks singles—you will not be disappointed... Fuzzboxes set to stun!
TRACK LIST: 1. Coffin Dragger 2. Arabesque

RE- RELEASE FROM THE SUNDAZED VAULTS...BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!
Artist: Hank Garland Title: Move! The Guitar Artistry of Hank Garland E 178- UPC 090771017826 - Double Compact Disc Set
Growing up in Cowpens, SC, Hank Garland began playing guitar at age 6. Ten years later, this precocious talent led him to Nashville, where he quickly integrated himself into the city’s thriving live music and recording scene. Scoring a million-selling hit at age 19 with “Sugarfoot Rag,” Garland became a first-call Nashville session guitarist, recording with a “who’s who” of country stars and nascent rockers (including that Presley kid—it’s Garland playing the indelible riff on “Little Sister” and many more of Elvis’ Nashville sessions). His prowess caught the ear of Gibson Guitar Company president Ted McCarty, who enlisted Garland’s input in designing Gibson’s classic Byrdland hollow body electric guitar. This collaboration proved prophetic, as Garland’s true musical passion was jazz, for which the Byrdland was both named and designed. After being told by Chet Atkins that Django Reinhardt was “the greatest guitar player in the world,” Garland spent countless hours studying the Belgian master guitarist’s style and method.
Garland ventured beyond Nashville as a member of Eddy Arnold’s touring band. Whenever Arnold’s tour hit New York City, Garland took advantage of the opportunity to visit the Big Apple’s many jazz clubs and studied with jazz guitar virtuoso Barry Galbraith. Securing a recording contract with Columbia Records, Garland set the jazz world on its ear in the late ’50s and early ’60s with three landmark albums for the label. Move! collects every track from these sessions, including the entire Jazz Winds from a New Direction album and four previously unissued tracks. Come hear the ultimate Nashville cat!

DEAR JERRY: In the mid-1980s, while enrolled at the University of Texas in Austin, I often listened to KLBJ-FM. I liked their album-oriented format, and that they expressed no noticeable concern over hit singles or record charts.
One progressive rock cut they played tells of two people at their class reunion, reminiscing about their teen romance that died when the girl pursued stardom.
I haven't heard this song in nearly 30 years, and have no clues as to the title or the singer.
Based on its Byrds-like psychedelic guitar riff (e.g., "Eight Miles High"), it could be from the late '60s.
There was no room then in my budget for records, but now I can afford it and would love to have this piece of my past.
—Martin Roth, Tucson, Ariz.
DEAR MARTIN: Fortunately, this piece of your past is easily available on several different CD and vinyl collections, most in the $8 to $12 range.
The track you want is "Always Drive a Cadillac," written in 1986 by Larry Raspberry for the Everly Brothers' "Born Yesterday" LP (Mercury 826142).
"Always Drive a Cadillac" is an absolutely brilliant recording in every respect, and that sizzling guitar you recall is the artistry of Albert Lee.
DEAR JERRY: When I think back to when radio was the primary source for the top records, I am reminded of how often some stations abused their power by banning songs for the silliest of reasons.
Among those I recall are the Playmates' "Beep Beep" (encouraged reckless driving); Bobby Darin's "Mack the Knife" (glamorized organized crime); and even an instrumental "Rumble," by Link Wray, (sanctioned gang violence).
Now in an era when radio is no longer the dominant supplier of music, do they even bother to ban anything? All they need do is just ignore what they don't like.
—Clark Forcier, Greenville, S.C.
DEAR CLARK: Your assessment of radio's changing significance in the digital age is supported by the number of one-time Top 40 outlets that switched to a talk, news, sports, religion, or other non-music income-generating format.
The three examples you give are true, and here are just a few more that may be hard to believe:
The Coasters' "Charlie Brown" (misbehaving at school); Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday" (depression, suicide); John Zacherle's "Dinner with Drac" (cannibalism); Ella Fitzgerald's "Love for Sale" (prostitution); Paul Simon's "Kodachrome" (product mention); and countless songs either overtly sexual, advocating drug use, or promoting some brand of religion to the exclusion of others.
We don't hear much these days about banning music, per se, but there is one fairly recent case not many in the U.S. know about.
This is the strange story of a song being banned by the BBC's Radio 1, not based on something they discovered by listening to it — rather by what they learned from reading a newspaper.
Until "The Guardian" ran an expose piece that came to their attention, Radio 1 aired "Style Attract and Play," by Shocka Featuring Honeyshot, unconcerned.
What Radio 1, which has a non-advertising policy, learned is that "Style Attract and Play" was an ad campaign for a hair gel product, and the song was created specifically to promote it.
Red-faced, Radio 1 responded thusly:
"The track was presented to Radio 1 in the usual way, via a legitimate promotions company, and we were not aware that it was a promotional tool for a hair product. As this was created by an advertising agency with the sole purpose of selling this product, and, since we do not play adverts, it is not something we will ever play again."
DEAR JERRY:What can you tell me about "Sail to Bombay, Sail to Rio," a beautiful song by Victoria's Voices? It was played often by the pop stations in this area, in the summer of 1964.
Did Victoria's Voices have other songs, or were they merely gathered to record this one tune? Are they perhaps known by another name.
Is "Sail to Bombay, Sail to Rio" available in any format?
—Warren M. Pischke, Brookfield, Wis. DEAR WARREN: Victoria's Voices apparently were a Nashville-area bunch, assembled by Monument Records to provide just two tracks.
In addition to "Sail to Bombay, Sail to Rio," they also recorded "Daydreamer," and you'll find that on the B-side (Monument 847).
Other than that one single, which is usually available for around five bucks, I know of no other music credited to Victoria's Voices. I have yet to find them on a CD.
Since we're talking about Nashville, some of the Voices may have done session work, but no other recordings exist by the group as a whole.
Unfortunately, the identities of the gals in Victoria's Voices remains Victoria's Secret.
IZ ZAT SO? In 1964, about 20% of the music played in America came from the UK; however, "Sail to Bombay, Sail to Rio" arrived by way of Germany. A year before the Monument session, German singing star, Margot Esken, popularized the same basic tune, but in German and with the title "Ob in Bombay, Ob in Rio" (Polydor 52 095). Rather than "Sail to Bombay, Sail to Rio," this translates as "Whether in Bombay, Whether in Rio." In 1964, Esken went back and recorded an English version titled "Sail to Bombay, Sail to Rio." This track is what inspired Victoria's Voices, though their lyrics do vary from Margot's.

Rodriguez - Searching For Sugar Man Vinyl 2-LP 2012
The story remains one of the music world's most unusual tales of the 1970s: an obscure debut LP by a Detroit singer-songwriter becomes a source of hope and inspiration to the anti-Apartheid movement in South Africa. Now, the story of Rodriguez and his cult album Cold Fact is the basis for Searching For Sugar Man, a riveting new documentary by filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul. Light In The Attic Records in partnership with Sony Legacy are honored to announce the release of the original motion picture soundtrack, comprising tracks from Cold Fact and its 1971 follow-up Coming From Reality - both reissued in 2008 and 2009 by Light In The Attic. The soundtrack begins with the otherworldly "Sugar Man" and acts as a primer to this long-overlooked musician's fusion of gritty funk, political poetry and blissful psych-folk.

Following up on an earlier post Beware of Mr. Baker from Aris at SnagFilms, a New York-based film distributor and new to the CVR blog.I have one download of the movie and a signed poster to give to the winner. So the 20th email with the words "Beware of Mr. Baker Contest" in the subject line will be declared the winner. Limit one email entry per person.
'Beware of Mr. Baker' is a vivid portrait of a rock icon, including the good, the bad and the over the top lifestyle of one of rock’s legendary wild men.
At home with rock ‘n’ roll monster Ginger Baker, Cream’s legendary scarlet-manned, hell-raising drummer. This no-holds-barred, sad, and hilarious portrait of the man referred to as rock’s first great drummer (and perhaps still its best) lets him tell his own story like only he can.
Eric Clapton, Johnny Rotten, Charlie Watts, and Lars Ulrich, Baker’s 4 wives, and 3 grown children all have something to say about him: “He’s a force of nature,” “he’s the greatest drummer any of us had ever heard,” “he’s mad,” and “he’s fairly consistently horrible” are just a few of them.
Ginger Baker looks back on his musical career with Cream and Blind Faith; his introduction to Fela Kuti; his self-destructive patterns and losses of fortune; and his current life inside a fortified South African compound.
Ginger Baker is, and was, a train wreck. Yet this film, like Baker's onstage playing, is always riveting, and something you can't look away from. Yet this film, like Baker’s onstage playing, is always riveting, and something you can’t look away from.~ Charles Cross, Seattle Times
