Bleach Blood – ‘Anything, Anything’ – OUT MARCH 24, 2013

Bleach Blood’s second single ‘Anything Anything’ comes out on Transmission Recordings on the 24 March. Featuring haunting vocals from Linda Harrison, this track is set to cement Bleach Blood’s reputation as a must-catch act in 2013.  Already championed by Radio 1 and XFM, the track's infectiously catchy chorus and atmospheric verses recall the angular, jerky of stylings of Post-Punk as well as the more commercial strains of the likes of Two Door Cinema Club.

Born out of a bunch of songs written in a bedroom somewhere in the vibrant warehousing district of London’s Manor House comes Bleach Blood. This is ex King Blue, Jamie Jazz’s compiled love of 70’s (post) punk, dance, electronica and pop music.

Along with the thundering beats of Invisible Frank, Charlie Elliott’s synthed up bass lines and guitarist Paul Mullen’s math psych guitars, expect honest songs about love, loss, escapism, friendship and whatever else falls out of their collective heads.

“One part power pop, one part electro indie and one part squat punk” (Vive le Rock)

“We may well be looking at another seminal UK band” - Rock Sound

“Jump-around-your-garage stuff for (almost) grown-ups.”  Clash

“Electronic foundations mixed with pop melodies knitted together by some energetic dressed-in-glitter punk and a sense of contagious build up verses and effortless choruses. What's not to love?” – AltSounds

“A gem of a Brit-Rock baby” - Rock Sound

Music Record Shop Weekly

Welcome to the new weekly feature (look for it every Friday) called MusicRecordShop Weekly.  Here we take a look at new releases and some hard to find vinyl records and boxed sets that will easily satisfy even the most serious record collectors.  Here's five that we think you will enjoy:

1. Megadeth - System Has Failed - Vinyl LP Import 2013

When Dave Mustaine was diagnosed with radial neuropathy (strained nerves in his left arm and hand) in 2002, it almost meant the end of Megadeth after two decades of thrash metal. Megadeth's first years are deemed legendary with classic albums such as Rust In Peace and Countdown To Extinction. Then in 2004 Mustaine resurrected Megadeth and released The System Has Failed. A surprise return including Chris Poland on guitar whom Mustaine fired after the masterful Peace Sells album. This re-pairing makes the album even more ferocious than the good old fashioned Megadeth thrash is all about. Dave Mustaine is going for that vibe on "Back In The Day" and he infuses it with melodic songwriting which makes this an outstanding Megadeth album, if not, the best Metal Album of 2004!

2. John Carpenter - They Live Vinyl LP Import 2013 (Pre-Order)

For the score to one of his most iconic films Carpenter and Howarth created what can only be described as electronic blues, The score is recognisable as Carpenter but has a dusty slow pulsating western feel that really does give it a life of it's own. The 1988 film follows a nameless drifter referred to as "Nada", who discovers the ruling class within the moneyed elite are in fact aliens managing human social affairs through the use of a signal on top of the TV broadcast, concealing their appearance and subliminal messages in mass media.

3. Jamiroquai - Traveling Without Moving Vinyl 2-LP Import 2013 (PRE-ORDER 3-18)

Travelling Without Moving [1996] intentionally offers more of what Jamiroquai does best: highly addictive funky grooves with a social consciousness that is matched by front man Jay Kay's charisma. The third effort of Jamiroquai was carried by an inventive video for "Virtual Insanity"; the album's flagship song. Pressed on two heavy weight champions packed in a gatefold sleeve, Travelling Without Moving is finally available on vinyl again, this time with remastered audio for maximum aural pleasure!

4. ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK (VINYL) IMPORT 2012 (ORANGE VINYL)

Exclusively re-mastered for this vinyl release including 6 tracks that never made it into the original film. John Carpenter not only directed Escape From New York but also composed and recorded all of its music too. This score sounds as fresh today as it did when it was first released. Laden with brooding electronic pulses, flashes of Krautrock and healthy dose of nu disco ensures that this soundtrack sounds as happy on the dance floor as it is in your headphones. 5. HALLOWEEN II (VINYL LP) IMPORT 2012 (ORANGE VINYL)

John Carpenter and Alan Howarth managed to do something not many people have been able to do with their score to Halloween II. They managed to take the blueprint of the first films score and make it bigger, darker and nerve shreddingly intense. Synths wail and stutter as the score progresses to the point where you feel your head might implode from the oncoming onslaught. This score really should be played late at night with all of the lights out.

Musicology 101

We also want to have a little fun, so here are some rock and roll nuggets so you can win at music trivia games and become a top musicologist!

Frank Sinatra once called rock and roll "The most brutal, ugly, degenerate, vicious form of expression it has been my displeasure to hear."

In order to give fans a "gold record," the first 100,000 copies of Grand Funk Railroad's "We're An American Band" by were stamped out of gold colored vinyl.

When Decca Records first released "Rock Around The Clock" by Bill Haley And His Comets in the Spring of 1954, most people had never heard of rock and roll and the company had a hard time describing the song. The label on the single called it a "Novelty Foxtrot."  It is also widely considered to be the song that, more than any other, brought rock and roll into mainstream culture around the world. The song is ranked #158 on the Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

The Allman Brothers' only Billboard Top 10 hit, "Ramblin' Man" was the last song recorded (October 1972) by bassist Berry Oakley before his death in 1972.  It topped out at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart; it was held out of first place by Gregg's future wife Cher's "Half-Breed."

CCR's John Fogerty had a notebook in which he jotted down words and names that he thought would make good song titles. At the top of his list was "Proud Mary", a phrase that brought images of a domestic washerwoman to John's mind. When he got around to putting it to music, the first few chords he used reminded him of a paddle-wheel going around. Instead of Proud Mary being a clean-up lady, she became a boat and the song is a staple at any wedding reception.

When a poem called "Too Many Teardrops" was put to music, it was re-titled "69 Tears."  Knowing that a song with such a name would never get any radio air play, it was re-named "96 Tears" and by October, 1966 became a #1 hit for Question Mark and The Mysterians.

Original Soundtrack - Reservoir Dogs - 180 gram audiophile vinyl

Could you think of any other contemporary movie producer that picks better soundtracks than the widely revered Quentin Tarantino? Inventing a genre on his own, his string of best-selling nouvelle violence movies started out in 1992 with the low budget cult classic Reservoir Dogs.

The film follows a band of criminals preparing for a diamond heist and follows the characters in the crime's aftermath. Its cast consists of sublime actors such as Harvey Keitel (whose comeback was a direct result of this film), Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Chris Penn (Sean's brother) and Steve Buscemi as the legendary character of Mr. Pink. The film's sparkling dialog catapulted Reservoir Dogs to eternal cult status and remains a favourite among movie fans all over the world, a fame to which its soundtrack contributed a great deal.

Music On Vinyl is proud to release these so called 'Super Sounds Of The Seventies', a selection of seminal and sometimes wacky hits by artists such as Stealers Wheel, Harry Nilsson ("Coconut" is included on Nilsson Schmilsson [MOVLP279] and Joe Tex. The movie also raised public interest in the Dutch band George Baker Selection, due to the use of his "Little Green Bag" in the film's opening titles. Keep On Truckin'!

Raveonettes - Pretty In Black

The second full-length album of Danish Fifties/Psych Pop duo The Raveonettes was released in 2005. On Pretty In Black, Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo abandoned the strict recording rules the band laid upon themselves on their preceding efforts (including limiting the amount of different chords in one song, keeping an entire album in one tuning - which was in fact B Flat Major for The Chain Gang Of Love [MOVLP069]) and keeping song running times under three minutes.  Instead, the group further expand on their signature sound of Fifties inspired Rockabilly Noise Pop with the eerie feel of a thriller movie soundtrack.

Special appearances on this album are made by Maureen Tucker of Velvet Underground on drums, Martin Rev on drum machine and Ronnie Spector, also known as Veronica Bennett of the fabulous Ronettes [MOVLP674] on backup vocals.

Taste - Taste - 180 gram audiophile vinyl

Before he went on a highly successful solo streak, Rory Gallagher fronted Taste - a highly influential Irish Blues Rock power trio that sound-wise had many things in common with contemporaries Cream. Besides Gallagher, band members in Taste were Charlie McCracken on bass (who jammed with Steve Winwood and Spencer Davis Group just prior to their breakthrough) and John Wilson, who used to kick the drums with Them before their popularity soared.  Charlie and John lay out perfect rhythms for a very young Gallagher in his pre-twenties, who showed heaps of talent for making his guitar sing the way only Rory can.  Taste's eponymous debut album from 1969 contains harder edged Rock jams like "Blister On The Moon" but also Blues traditionals like Leadbelly's "Leaving Blues" and "Catfish". Crucial material for any Blues or Rock fan.

EARTHEN GRAVE Signs Exclusive Worldwide Deal With Ripple Music

Chicago's EARTHEN GRAVE is thrilled to announce their recent signing to Heavy Rock Leader, Ripple Music for worldwide release of their debut album, Earthen Grave.

The album will be available on CD and double vinyl on July 9th via Ripple Music.

Formed in 2008, EARTHEN GRAVE is a five-piece Chicago metal band that marries the sounds of metal past and future with a sweaty, pummeling live show. EARTHEN GRAVE boasts an undeniable collective metal and musical pedigree. Each member is an accomplished musician and a veteran of the metal scene, including Ron Holzner who was a member of the seminal and seismic doom pioneers TROUBLE - a band widely regarded as one of the most important unsung American metal bands of all time. In addition, EARTHEN GRAVE has that "extra something special" with occasional guest 6th member live and boasting a Full collaboration on the new release with Rachel Barton Pine. Rachel, a world-renowned classical violinist brings her frightening classical chops to a relatively new instrument, the Viper.

Originally released in 2012, EARTHEN GRAVE's self-titled debut features 10 tracks of blistering Doom and Metal that left the critics grasping for superlatives. Terrorizer Magazine hailed "...Earthen Grave sounds old school without being retro, managing to go through every element on which lesser bands usually fail with exquisite grace and solemn subtlety..."
Now to be reissued through Ripple Music, the new edition of the album, produced by Ron Holzner, has been completely remastered with four bonus tracks including the new song, "Death is Another Word...." with new drummer Chris Wozniak (LAIR OF THE MINOTAUR) and the epic live Stargazer (Rainbow) with string section and virtuoso violinist Rachel Barton Pine.

And now the album will finally see a vinyl release! Double gatefold vinyl to be precise, featuring the 10 song remastered debut with the new song "Death is Another Word...." plus three bonus live tracks. One of the live tracks, "Death March Intro - End of my Daze," features TROUBLE guitarist Bruce Franklin. That's a whole new side of vinyl featuring the epic live Stargazer (Rainbow), plus three more live, never-before-released tracks.

EARTHEN GRAVE is dedicated to exploring new possibilities for the genre. As guitarist Jason Muxlow says, "It's not about being the heaviest band or the slowest - it's about having good songs. " second guitarist Tony Spillman and I played doom metal before it was even called that," Ron continues. "And for Jason, the music we pioneered was his influence. We're bringing the strands of the music together - and with the addition of Rachel using the violin as a core component of a metal band, and featuring multi-talented vocalist Mark Weiner we're taking the genre on a new journey."

ZOMBIEFICATION To Release 'At The Caves Of Eternal' In May

Thursday, March 14, 2013

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF MARCH 11, 2013

DEAR JERRY: Last year around this time you wrote about Adele's amazing accomplishments, especially with her "21" album. How long did it stay on the charts?
—Alissa Thorpe, Vincennes, Ind.

DEAR ALISSA: Adele's "21" is not only still on the charts, but, as of this writing (March 11), is perched at No. 10.

This blockbuster has been on the charts over two year's worth of weeks (106), and is likely to remain there for many more.

According to Billboard, Adele's "21" is the first one to top the global albums chart for two consecutive years, since the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) began reporting global best-sellers in 2001.

"21" is also the first album since 1983-'84 ("Thriller") to be the No. 1 seller two years in a row in the U.S.

Adele was Billboard's Artist of the Year for 2011 and 2012, making her the first artist ever to earn both honors in two consecutive years.

Oh yeah, she also gave birth to a son, born Oct. 19, 2012.

So what has Adele done so far this year?

In February, her live version of "Set Fire to the Rain" claimed the GRAMMY for Best Pop Solo Performance, bringing her collection of golden gramophones to 10.

Also last month, Adele's recording, co-written with producer Paul Epworth, of the latest James Bond film theme, "Skyfall," won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song.

"Skyfall" continued its winning ways Feb. 24, earning Adele an Oscar (Best Original Song) at the 85th Academy Awards event.

DEAR JERRY: Since they began tracking sales by computer coding, what are the Top 10 selling movie soundtrack albums?
—Jill Breckenridge, Crescent City, Calif.

DEAR JILL: With the estimated current total of units sold in the U.S., they are:

"The Bodyguard" (1992, over 12 million)
"Titanic" (1997, over 10 million)
"The Lion King" (1994, nearly five million)
"City of Angels" (1998, over four million)
"Armageddon" (1998, over three million)
"O Brother Where Art Thou" (2001, over three million)
"High School Musical" (2006, over three million)
"High School Musical 2" (2007, nearly three million)
"Hannah Montana 2" (2007, over two million)
"Hannah Montana" (2006, nearly two million)
"Hannah Montana: The Movie" (2009, nearly two million)
Since there is very little difference between these last two, our Top 10 has 11 entries.

DEAR JERRY: My favorite instrument is the tenor saxophone, and Mildred Bailey's "Emaline" has some killer sax accompaniment.

The rest of the horn section is also excellent, as is Mildred, but who is playing that sax?

The record label merely credits Benny Goodman and His Orchestra.
—Ralph Kimberly, Syracuse, N.Y.

DEAR RALPH: Producers of big band and swing recordings often used the two-thirds instrumental, one-third vocal model, with the vocal segment sandwiched in the middle.

To handle those vocal interludes, all of the top bands employed one or more singers. But the band was the star of the show, with the vocalist getting second billing.

On "Emaline," for example, Mildred's vocal uses just 58 seconds of a 3:24 total running time.

Having approximately two-thirds of the session for the instrumentalists to shine, gave selected players some time in the spotlight.

The four-song session that included "Emaline" (em-a-line, not em-a-lin), held February 2, 1934 at Columbia's New York studio, included these brass and woodwind all-stars: Coleman Hawkins (tenor sax); Sonny Lee (trombone); Charlie Margolis and Mannie Klein (trumpets); and of course Benny Goodman on clarinet.

Keeping the beat for everyone that day was drummer extraordinaire, Gene Krupa.

IZ ZAT SO? The exposure gained as a big band's featured vocalist kick-started some hugely successful solo careers.

Here are 21 prime examples of legendary artists, and the bands that launched them, though not always their first:

Louis Armstrong (King Oliver)
Mildred Bailey (Paul Whiteman)
Rosemary Clooney (Tony Pastor)
Perry Como (Ted Weems)
Bing Crosby (Paul Whiteman)
Doris Day (Les Brown)
Eddie Fisher (Buddy Morrow)
Ella Fitzgerald (Chick Webb)
Merv Griffin (Freddy Martin)
Dick Haymes (Harry James)
Billie Holiday (Teddy Wilson)
Kitty Kallen (Harry James)
Peggy Lee (Benny Goodman)
Ella Mae Morse (Freddie Slack)
Patti Page (Benny Goodman)
Dinah Shore (Xavier Cugat)
Frank Sinatra (Tommy Dorsey)
Jo Stafford (Tommy Dorsey)
Kay Starr (Glenn Miller)

Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced =MONO= UK Version
180 gram audiophile vinyl

Ex The Animals musician & entrepreneur Chas Chandler had brought Hendrix to the UK, teaming him up with drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Noel Redding. Recordings for Are You Experienced had begun in late October 1966, producing a string of singles preceding the illustrious first album by the world's most famous guitarist. While recording, the future working relationship between engineer Eddie Kramer and Hendrix was forged. The debut album by The Jimi Hendrix Experience was initially issued in mono and then 'enhanced stereo' on later issues.

The UK cover photography was by Bruce Flemming. Releases in Europe had the words "Jimi Hendrix" placed above the title. These later issues were 'enhanced stereo', with tracks listed on the back.

The USA & Canadian issues were released after the band appeared at the Monterey Pop Festival in June 1967, along with The Who. Its art was directed by Ed Thrasher, using a Karl Ferris infra-red fish-eye photo. There is a key difference to the tracks on this album, with some removed and replaced by the earlier singles, plus a change to the running order. The spelling "Foxey Lady" appears in some of these issues, and has been adopted for the Music On Vinyl mono reissue.

Tracklisting:
Side 1
1 Foxy Lady
2 Manic Depression
3 Red House
4 Can You See Me
5 Love or Confusion
6 I Don't Live Today

Side 2

Jimi Hendrix - Axis Bold As Love =Mono= - MOVLP723
 180 gram audiophile vinyl

Axis: Bold as Love, the second Experience album, was released merely six months after their debut LP Are You Experienced, at the end of 1967. Many of the album's songs were composed with complex studio recording techniques in mind and as a result were rarely performed live. Only "Spanish Castle Magic" and every-guitar-player's-ultimate-study-material "Little Wing" became staples during concerts.

The album shows an incredible growth in Hendrix' songwriting and sonical versatility. Radio friendly rockers like "Wait Until Tomorrow" and "You Got Me Floatin'" are mixed with ballads such as "Castles Made Of Sand" – the album's variety makes it a delightful listen.

The original mono pressing was intended to cater to those listeners with outdated hifi equipment, and therefore this is a rare piece of Hendrix' legacy. The Music On Vinyl reissue of the mono mix makes this evergreen available for contemporary ears again.

Jimi - Hendrix - Electric Ladyland - MOVLP078

Electric Ladyland is the third and final album by the Jimi Hendrix Experience, released in 1968 on Reprise Records. Produced and mainly written by Jimi Hendrix, the album is seen as the peak of Hendrix's mastery of the electric guitar.

The album is a cross-section of Hendrix's wide range of musical talent. It includes samples of several genres, including the psychedelia of "Burning Of The Midnight Lamp", the extended blues jam "Voodoo Chile", the New Orleans-style rock and roll of "Come On", the epic studio production of "1983... (A Merman I Should Turn to Be)", and the social commentary of "House Burning Down".

The album also features a cover version of Bob Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower" that has been praised by many, including Dylan himself.

Jimi Hendrix - Band Of Gypsys - MOVLP080

The Jimi Hendrix Experience disbanded after three albums, but Jimi quickly formed a new band with bassist Billy Cox and his drummer friend Buddy Miles; the Band Of Gypsys. Musically the Band of Gypsys leaned more towards Jimi's funk/R&B roots than the psychedelic rock sound of the Experience.

The Band Of Gypsys made their live debut at the Fillmore East on New Year's Eve, 1969, for a series of four shows spread over two nights. A compilation of these shows saw the light as the eponymous live album Band of Gypsys. Containing definitive versions of "Machine Gun" and "Who Knows"!

Jimi Hendrix - In The West - MOVLP408

Very often, at the beginning of a show, Jimi Hendrix would ask his audience to 'forget about what happened yesterday or today and start their own world right here'. For this special new edition of the 1971 live album Music On Vinyl asks you to do the same.

In The West consists of live recordings from the two incarnations of The Jimi Hendrix Experience, including his legendary Isle Of Wight Festival performance in 1970, where he created a live medley of "God Save The Queen" and "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" with a stunned Paul McCartney in the audience.

To Jimi, concerts were snapshots of where the band was at that moment in time, and Electric Ladyland director of engineering Eddie Kramer (and producer of most of Jimi's posthumous live albums) must have realized that this was when The Experience was at its peak.

In The West was the first live album to be released after Jimi's untimely death. Forty years later, Music On Vinyl is re-releasing it with a number of beautiful extra's: three bonus tracks that have never been released before, along with a booklet of unpublished photographs by Jim Marshall, who was also responsible for the iconic cover artwork.

Jimi Hendrix - Blues - MOVLP227

Originally released in 1994, the Jimi Hendrix Blues album features 11 blues performances recorded by Jimi between 1966 and 1970 showcasing the guitarist's mastery of the 12-bar form. This double-LP audiophile edition of Blues is arguably the best packaged, richest sounding, most coherent post-mortem release from the Hendrix archives.

Framed by his 1967 acoustic 12-string rendition of "Hear My Train 'A Comin'" and a 1970 Trio performance of the same song, these 11 rough and ready tracks illustrate Hendrix's deep spiritual connections to his blues roots and his daring experimental take on the shape of future blues to come. And they've never sounded so vital, necessary or dynamic!

This 2LP version will forever stand as the definitive-sounding, high-performance edition of this historic collection.

Jimi Hendrix - First Rays Of The New Rising Sun - MOVLP076

First Rays of the New Rising Sun, released in 1997, is an attempt to recreate the album Jimi Hendrix was working on at the time of his death in 1970, as close as is feasible to how he would have wanted it (based on recordings and notes he made during the last months of his life).

Tracks for this album ranged from finished to skeletal at the time of Hendrix's death. Much of the material had been recorded over the summer of 1970 at Jimi's just-completed Electric Lady Studios in New York City.

First Rays was the first of a series posthumous albums with hiqh-quality sought-after rarities and other previously unreleased music, released by the Jimi Hendrix Estate.

Jimi Hendrix - Live At Berkeley - MOVLP538

Jimi Hendrix's show at the Community Theater in Berkeley on May 30, 1970 has always been the stuff of legends.

Although much of the performance has been bootlegged to within an inch of its life, it wasn't until 2003 that the second show of the evening was officially released. Mainly because it has remained in high demand, Music On Vinyl decided to re-release the album on 180 gram audiophile vinyl.

His signature songs "Hey Joe", "Foxy Lady", "Purple Haze" and "Voodoo Child" sound absolutely stunning, but it's Jimi's solo on "Stone Free" and the tracks "I Don't Live Today" and "Machine Gun" that take you into the stratosphere.

This beautiful Hendrix album will be released in a gatefold sleeve with an 8 page booklet.

Jimi Hendrix - Winterland - MOVLP409

LAST COPIES AVAILABLE!

During an Indian Summer in 1968, Jimi Hendrix and his original Experience had a long weekend at San Francisco's biggest psychedelic ballroom: The Winterland. Each night they played two shows at the sold-out venue. Each show they blew the audience away – along with a couple of amps.

The Experience were at the pinnacle of creativity and on the verge of releasing their third album Electric Ladyland, and so they unleashed a great number of their new songs onto their audiences. And although each show was recorded the tapes were shelved for almost twenty years before being released unto the world at large.

Now, the 1987 release has been expanded from two to eight LPs, featuring never before released music from each of the six unforgettable Winterland performances and a 19-minute backstage interview held a month after the legendary shows. Included in the box is a 24 page booklet with never before published photos from the Winterland and liner notes by David Fricke, senior editor at Rolling Stone. Limited and numbered to only 1,000 copies!
