EMPERORS RELEASE CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED DEBUT LP STAY FROSTY

Taking the best elements of classic 90s alternative (massive hooks/upbeat choruses) and ditching the worst (mopey pretension/downtempo sludge), Australia's Emperors simultaneously pay homage to a bygone era while adding their own unique flavor. By embracing the power pop aesthetic of Weezer, Ash and Guided By Voices, Emperors' debut record Stay Frosty is ten tracks of unrelenting, yet instantly catchy and accessible rock. It's also remarkably straight-faced, in an era where garage/alternative throwback acts tend to rely more on ironic detachment and feedback over songcraft. "We're not trying to reinvent the wheel," says the band. "We're just trying to write memorable pop songs that we like and people can connect with."

Formed in Perth, Australia in 2010, Emperors quickly rose to prominence in the Australian music scene and have been steadily gaining an American following. The songwriting team of Adam Livingston and Greg Sanders proved to be fruitful as the band played the Big Day Out Festival as their 10th gig. Since then the band has released the critically acclaimed Sam EP and the recent debut LP Stay Frosty, containing the 2012 US iTunes Rock Song Of The Year "Be Ready When I Say Go." We went in with the goal of making an accessible indie rock album," says the band. "We were very conscious of making a record that doesn't let up and has no filler."

In regards to the album's unique title, the band maintains that it was a happy accident. "It's military slang for 'keep your cool' or 'stay calm and focused'. We heard it watching (the HBO miniseries) Generation Kill and thought it was a cool saying; nothing more to it than that,"

Don't be late to the party...check out Australia's best-kept secret: Emperors.

Ask. Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF APRIL 8, 2013

DEAR JERRY: Someone on Facebook recently posted this interesting piece of music trivia:

"Alan O'Day, earned the RIAA Gold Record award for his No. 1 hit "Undercover Angel." He is the only artist from the '50s, '60s, or '70s with a certified million-seller who had no other Top 60 hits on any of the national charts."

I can think of several others with only one big hit, but they may not meet the other criteria in the claim.

Can you explain and perhaps verify this?
—Lynn Pulsipher, Indianapolis

Alan O'Day

DEAR LYNN: Assuming your memory of the Facebook post is accurate, their trivia tidbit stops just a tad short of providing the complete story.

They could have sealed the deal by having the first sentence read: "Alan O'Day, earned one RIAA Gold Record award for his No. 1 hit "Undercover Angel," and another for writing Helen Reddy's "Angie Baby."

That modification would have definitely set him apart from the other one-hit wonders, each with a Recording Industry Association of America Gold Record, yet no other Top 60 hits, etc.

Of which there are only two from that 30 year period:

Laurie London, who earned Gold from the RIAA in 1958 for "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands," is one, and Robin Scott (recording as "M") is the other. His golden disc is for "Pop Musik," a New Wave sensation in 1979.

Alan O'Day is still active. He wrote and sings the title song for the 2012 movie "You Don't Say," produced by Robert Alaniz. In one of Alan's recorded chats with Robert, he shares some background on "Angie Baby," and how it found its way to Helen Reddy:

"At the time, I was a staff songwriter at Warner Bros. Music, a publishing company, and when I brought "Angie" in everyone was excited about her.

"One morning while I was driving, "Angie Baby" came on the radio. It took me a couple of minutes to realize it was mine.

"Helen did a great job on it, and it went to No. 1 and sold about two million copies."

Besides writing for Helen Reddy and himself, Alan penned some significant hits for other artists, including: Bobby Sherman ("The Drum," 1971); Righteous Brothers ("Rock and Roll Heaven," 1974); and Cher ("Train of Thought," 1974). This time, Cher did not let get a good song slip away.

Helen Reddy in concert, 1974
"Warner knew Cher was looking for new material then, so they took the song to her first, but she wasn't interested. Next, they sent it to Jeff Wald, Helen Reddy's husband at the time. Jeff and Helen both loved it.

"Angie Baby" was my attempt to write a song, one like Paul McCartney might do about a contemporary woman. The normal woman that was the original heroine of my song had to get changed in order to be more interesting. So I started screwing her up.

DEAR JERRY: Country Music News lists this week's (March 23) two top songs as "Sure Be Cool If You Did," by Blake Shelton, followed by "Mama's Broken Heart," by his wife, Miranda Lambert.

They indicate it's the first time ever for a married couple to separately rank No. 1 and No. 2.

If George Jones and Tammy Wynette didn't manage to do that during their prime, they must have come darn close.

Am I right or wrong?
—Steve Gipson, Hendersonville, Tenn.

DEAR STEVE: You are oh so right, and now you'll have the proof.

For two weeks in July of 1972, Billboard's top three country tunes were:

1. "It's Gonna Take a Little Bit Longer" (Charley Pride)
2. "Reach Out Your Hand" (Tammy Wynette)
3. "Loving You Could Never Be Better" (George Jones)

Obviously, you can't get much closer to having the top two than that, and George and Tammy were indeed married at the time.

That same summer, "The Ceremony," one of many duets by "the Jones and Wynette set," was headed toward a spot in the Top 10.

Their household was represented in every configuration possible.

From 1967 through '77, just Tammy's first 10 years on the scene, the number of hit records for her and George, individually and in assorted duets, is staggering.

Tammy Wynette: 40 Hot Country Single hits, including 13 duets, two with David Houston and 11 with George Jones. Of those 40 titles, 33 were Top 10 and 20 reached No. 1.

George Jones: 48 Hot Country Single hits, including 14 duets, 11 with Tammy Wynette, and one each with Melba Montgomery, Brenda Carter, and his stepdaughter, Tina Byrd. Of those 48 titles, 30 were Top 10 and six reached No. 1.

IZ ZAT SO? In October 1973, "We're Gonna Hold On" became the first No. 1 hit for George Jones and Tammy Wynette.

That marked only the third time ever that a husband-wife duo topped the country survey.

First came "Don't Let Me Cross Over," by Carl and Pearl Butler (1962), then "Tennessee Bird Walk," by Jack Blanchard & Misty Morgan (1970).

Married or not, here are all of the No. 1 duet country hits (1953-1981):

1953: "A Dear John Letter" Jean Shepard & Ferlin Huskey
1954: "One By One" Kitty Wells & Red Foley
1956: "Why Baby Why" Red Sovine & Webb Pierce
1962: "Don't Let Me Cross Over" Carl Butler & Pearl
1965: "Yes, Mr. Peters" Roy Drusky & Priscilla Mitchell
1967: "My Elusive Dreams" David Houston & Tammy Wynette; "For Loving You" Bill Anderson & Jan Howard
1970: "Tennessee Bird Walk" Jack Blanchard & Misty Morgan
1971: "After the Fire Is Gone" Conway Twitty & Loretta Lynn; "Lead Me On " Conway Twitty & Loretta Lynn
1973: "Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man" Conway Twitty & Loretta Lynn; *"We're Gonna Hold On" George Jones & Tammy Wynette
1974: "As Soon As I Hang Up the Phone" Conway Twitty & Loretta Lynn; "Please Don't Stop Loving Me" Porter Wagoner & Dolly Parton
1975: "Feelins" Conway Twitty & Loretta Lynn
1976: "Sometimes" Bill Anderson & Mary Lou Turner; "Good Hearted Woman" Waylon & Willie; "Golden Ring" George Jones & Tammy Wynette; "I Don't Want to Have to Marry You" Jim Ed Brown & Helen Cornelius
1977: "Near You" George Jones & Tammy Wynette
1978: "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys" Waylon & Willie; "Every Time Two Fools Collide" Kenny Rogers & Dottie West; "On My Knees" Charlie Rich & Janie Fricke
1979: "All I Every Need Is You" Kenny Rogers & Dottie West; "Heartbreak Hotel" Willie Nelson & Leon Russell; "Just Good Ol' Boys" Moe Bandy & Joe Stampley.
1980: "Bar Room Buddies" Merle Haggard & Clint Eastwood
1981: "You're the Reason God Made Oklahoma" David Frizzell & Shelly West; "What Are We Doin' in Love" Dottie West & Kenny Rogers

LET FURY HAVE THE HOUR CONTEST

our friend Aris at SnagFilms, a New York-based film distributor, is promoting another film, a provocative and gripping film about music, power and the human element in all of us.

Today, for the 5th emailer to this email address (rbenson30@wi.rr.com) with the words "Let Fury Have The Hour Contest" in the subject line will win a free download of the film.  Limit one email entrant per email address please!  Winner will be announced as soon as possible!

LET FURY HAVE THE HOUR
Let fury have the hour/
Anger can be power/
Do you know that you can use it?”
– “The Clampdown,” The Clash

Rough, raw and unapologetically inspirational, LET FURY HAVE THE HOUR is a charged journey into the heart of the creative counter-culture in 2012. In a time of global challenges, big questions and by-the-numbers politics, this upbeat, outspoken film tracks the story of the artists, writers, thinkers and musicians who have gone underground to re-imagine the world – honing in on equality, community and engaged creativity – in exuberantly paradigm-busting ways.

Writer/director Antonino D’Ambrosio unites 50 powerful, of-the-moment voices –from street artist Shepard Fairey to rapper Chuck D to playwright Eve Ensler to musicians Tom Morello and Billy Bragg to novelist Edwidge Danticat to filmmaker John Sayles to comic Lewis Black – who share personal and powerful tales of how they transformed anger and angst into provocative art and ideas. Mix-mastered with historical footage, animation and performances, D’Ambrosio presents a visceral portrait of a generation looking to re-jigger a system that has failed to address the most pressing problems of our times . . . or human potential.

The story begins in the 1980s with the rise of Reagan and Thatcher — and a cultural shift towards fierce individualism and rampant consumerism. Coming of age in a world seemingly gone mad or at least gone shopping, some kids started searching for something more authentic. This was the start of a renegade movement D’Ambrosio calls “creative-response.” It was a hybrid, haphazard collective of skateboarders, punk rockers, rappers, street poets, feminists and graffitists whose reaction to this brave new world was not to turn away, but to turn up the volume and have their say.

Now that generation is coming to the fore, sparking a global movement focused not just on pushing the boundaries with guitars, paint, dance, storytelling, graphics and subcultural style – but on coming together around real reasons for hope.

Set to a stirring soundtrack from the film’s artists – including Rage Against The Machine, Public Enemy, Billy Bragg, Gogol Bordello, MC5, DJ Spooky and Sean Hayes – LET FURY HAVE THE HOUR is a fast and furious trip into the grass roots of art and activism, 21st Century style. The film is written and directed by author and visual artist Antonino D’Ambrosio in his feature debut. The producers are D’Ambrosio and James L. Reid and the executive producers are Jonathan Gray, Brian Devine, Rob McKay, Mark Urman and Chaz Zelus. The film features original music from composer and MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer. A CAVU Pictures release.

Musicology 101

Let's have a little fun, so here are some rock and roll nuggets so you can win at music trivia games and become a top musicologist!

In 1965, with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Mamas And Papas all turning out big hits, the Grammy Award for Best Performance By a Vocal Group was won by The Anita Kerr Singers for "We Dig Mancini".

Only Lawrence Welk has had more musical appearances on U.S. network television than Paul Revere And The Raiders!

Willie Nelson told talk show host David Letterman that the hit he wrote for Patsy Cline, "Crazy", was originally titled "Stupid."

During his "Wall of Sound" days, Phil Spector's practice was to put an instrumental on the B side of a 45 to keep disc jockeys from flipping the record over and taking attention from the A side.

CCR's John Fogerty had a notebook in which he jotted down words and names that he thought would make good song titles. At the top of his list was "Proud Mary", a phrase that brought images of a domestic washerwoman to John's mind. When he got around to putting it to music, the first few chords he used reminded him of a paddle-wheel going around. Instead of Proud Mary being a clean-up lady, she became a boat and the song is a staple at any wedding reception.

The song "Summertime Blues" was a US Top 40 hit in three different decades - in the fifties by Eddie Cochran (#8), the sixties by Blue Cheer (#14) and the seventies by The Who (#27).

Pat Benatar, who placed 15 songs in the Billboard Top 40, including "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" (#9 in 1980) and "We Belong" (#5 in 1984) and "Love Is A Battlefield," (the music video, which depicted Benatar as a teenage runaway trying to survive the mean streets of New York City, was nominated for an MTV Video Music Award for Best Female Video) trained at Julliard as an opera singer.

Tindersticks - Tindersticks (2nd Album)

British band Tindersticks formed in 1991, renowned for their orchestral sound and their vocalist Stuart A. Staples' characteristic baritone.  Essentially the group combined the dark romanticism of Leonard Cohen, Ian Curtis, and Scott Walker with the song craft of Lee Hazlewood and the aesthetics of indie rock. This is especially apparent on their first few records, such as Tindersticks (II) their second eponymous album.

We release this modern day classic on a 180 gram vinyl double LP accompanied with a 4-page booklet.  First 1000 copies numbered and pressed on baby blue vinyl!

Dan Penn - Do Right Man

Dan Penn has Southern Soul running through his veins.  Penn started out in the early sixties as band leader of various soul combos in Alabama but remaining out of the limelight for most of his career, choosing instead writing hit songs for other artists.  He has been responsible for songs including "Is A Bluebird Blue" by Conway Twitty, "Do Right Woman Do Right Man" by Aretha Franklin, "The Letter" by The Box Tops, "I'm Your Puppet" by Bobby & James Purify, "You Left The Water Running" by Wilson Picket and Otis Redding and many more.

In 1994 Dan finally picked up the guitar and recorded these songs himself for the first time and to great effect: his renditions of "I'm Your Puppet" and "You Left The Water Running" add fragile and beautiful magic to these already great songs.  The Music On Vinyl release of Do Right Man is a must-have as it's never been released on vinyl before!

THE COLOURIST PREMIERE NEW SONG, "YES YES" ON ROLLING STONE

Be sure to catch The Colourist at COACHELLA and on tour with Metric, Youngblood Hawke and The Wombats!

After debuting their breakout single "Little Games" last month, The Colourist premiered their second athemic-indie-pop hit, "Yes Yes" today on RollingStone.com.

The Colourist first stumbled upon one another in an underused warehouse in Orange County, CA, where Adam and Maya discovered the harmonic chemistry that has come to define the band’s bright and anthemic signature sound.

"We'd had the idea for "Yes Yes" since the band started," explains drummer Maya Tuttle, "We knew a friend's relationship was near the breaking point because of a third wheel that was trying to break the two up by throwing lies into the mix. While in the studio in LA, Adam came up with an upbeat idea for the base of the song--then the four of us hunkered down and completed it. It's about not falling for the illusion that another person can fix all of your problems."

• LISTEN TO "YES YES" •

Having spent much of 2012 honing their live show with the likes of Grouplove, Electric Guest and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., The Colourist begin 2013 holed up in a small studio in Southern California. It’s there that Adam Castilla (vocals, guitar), Maya Tuttle (drums, vocals), Kollin Johannsen (guitar, bass), and Justin Wagner (bass, keys) will commit their pop-fueled, indie-bred rock to tape before embarking on their first tour which includes appearances at Coachella along with support shows with Metric, The Wombats and Youngblood Hawke.

Keep your eyes peeled for The Colourist's debut full length album coming later this year!

Amazon extends free digital song offer, AutoRip, to vinyl records

Amazon says that every time a person buys a vinyl record from its online store, it will give that customer a digital version of the songs for free.

The feature, called AutoRip, was launched in January for CDs. The company has said it has boosted music sales. Digital songs are stored in the customer's online storage account with Amazon. Songs received this way don't count against that customer's storage limit.

The new offer, announced yesterday extends to any physical albums bought on Amazon since 1998.

“AutoRip has been wildly popular with customers since it launched earlier this year,” said Steve Boom, vice president of digital music for Amazon. “We’re thrilled to extend this experience to vinyl records. Many of our music customers are vinyl fans, and it’s traditionally been very difficult to make digital versions of vinyl records. Now customers can enjoy the albums they buy wherever they are, not just when they have access to a record player.”

The digital songs can be played on a variety of devices, including Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle Fire tablets, Android phones and tablets, and Apple Inc.'s iPads and iPhones.

Cyanide Pills - Still Bored (CD/LP/Download) - OUT 8th April 2013

The most talked about band at last year's Rebellion Festival was without a doubt Cyanide Pills. They took to the stage unsociably early on the Saturday afternoon and gave a truly amazing performance that cemented their reputation as one of the country's best, kick-ass live punk pop/new wave bands.

Their self-titled debut LP came out in 2010, and now the lads' second album Still Bored is ready to hit the shelves. It's a storming 17 track punk pop blast dealing with alienation, despair, politics and impotence. There's also a punk rock/geography/history lesson with “Johnny Thunders Lived In Leeds”.

Cyanide Pills will be doing a mini tour in the UK in April with dates to follow supporting The Addicts in Germany in May and a show with The Subway Sect in their hometown on the first of June.

Like their debut album, Still Bored was recorded at The Billiard Room in Leeds by Wedding Present producer Carl Rosamond.
