German electronic group Haujobb will be releasing their 2011 album New World March as a double vinyl this Spring on Artoffact Records. Music Record Shop Weekly

Welcome to the new weekly feature (look for it every Friday) called MusicRecordShop Weekly.  Here we take a look at new releases and some hard to find vinyl that will easily satisfy even the most serious record collectors.  Here's three that we think you will enjoy!

1. THE BEATLES - YELLOW SUBMARINE (VINYL LP OST)

Admittedly, the soundtrack to Yellow Submarine wasn't one of the highlights in the Beatles' catalog, so providing an official alternate version of it is no big deal. The soundtrack always felt cobbled together, because it was. It only contained four new songs -- two of which were written by Harrison, which indicates how seriously Lennon and McCartney took the project, if their enjoyable throwaways ("Hey Bulldog" and "All Together Now," respectively) didn't provide enough of a clue -- plus two previously released songs ("All You Need Is Love," "Yellow Submarine") and a side of George Martin instrumentals from the film's score. the Beatles never assembled a slighter album while they were active, so it wasn't a sacrilege when their organization decided to assemble a "songtrack" -- a soundtrack that featured only the songs in the film, not any of the instrumentals -- to coincide with the re-release of the film in 1999. In a way, the "songtrack" (which is what the Beatles' associates insisted on calling the new effort) is an improvement on the soundtrack since it eliminates dead weight and strengthens the original six songs with nine songs featured in the movie ("Eleanor Rigby," "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," etc.). It's a little jarring not to hear the songs from the soundtrack in a different order on the songtrack, but ultimately the record is entertaining, if a bit familiar. That's not the case with the sound, though. the Beatles have decided to make this the first remixed CD in their catalog. The differences are slight but often notable and never really an improvement; as a matter of fact, it could likely be enough to irk, possibly anger, longtime Beatlemaniacs. It helps distinguish the Yellow Submarine "songtrack" as much as the new sequencing.

Musicology 101

Let's have a little fun, so here are some rock and roll nuggets so you can win at music trivia games and become a top musicologist!

In February 1949, after RCA Victor introduced the first 45 rpm phonograph, they put together a promo package of seven 45s that were sent to US disc jockeys and retailers. The records were color coded for classification of music. Popular - Black; Classical - Red; Popular Classical - Midnight blue; Children's - Yellow; Country and Western - Green; Rhythm And Blues - Cerise; International - Sky blue.

The Righteous Brothers' hit "Unchained Melody" was never intended to be a single. It was recorded as an album cut and later pressed on the "B" side of the 45 "Hung On You". When it was released, DJs flipped the disc over and "Unchained Melody" quickly rose to #4 in the US and #1 in the UK.

Before assembling AC/DC, Malcolm Young played with the Velvet Underground- not THE Velvet Underground; Young’s band mates were Australians who simply stole the name.

One of Motley Crue’s earliest stage gimmicks was to light their pants on fire. Brings new meaning to the term- ‘liar, liar-pants on fire.’

Lesley Gore's first album was called "I'll Cry If I Want To" which consisted of songs completely devoted to crying.

The most expensive guitar in the world is a Fender Stratocaster once owned by Eric Clapton. Nicknamed "Blackie", it sold at auction for $959,500. on June 25th, 2004.

Elvis Presley was a devoted animal lover. He owned dogs, mules, horses, peacocks, chickens, a turkey and had a silly mynah bird that said, “Elvis! Go to hell!”

We all know that Elvis loved his food. “I like it well-done,” the legendary icon stated. “I ain’t ordering a pet.”

In January, 2005, on what would have been Elvis Presley's 70th birthday, "Jailhouse Rock" was re-released in the UK where it went straight to #1. At over 47 years after its original release, it became the oldest recording ever to top the UK charts.

Songwriter Tommy Durden showed his partner Mae Axton a newspaper story about a suicide victim who had left a one-line note that said "I Walk A Lonely Street". The pair added "Heartbreak Hotel" to the line and in 22 minutes had written Elvis Presley's first million seller.

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

For Immediate Release

Tsurumi Records Releases Their First-Ever Film Soundtrack For Indie Horror Flick The Revenant

(Seattle, WA) – April 16, 2013 Seattle-based indie punk and garage rock record label Tsurumi Records release their first-ever soundtrack for the underground indie horror flick The Revenant to online and physical stores today.

The Revenant marks the label's first-ever release through their new digital distribution partner, French Kiss Label Group as well as the label's first-ever soundtrack release.  The physical release on CD is through their long-time partner, CPI Distribution, available through stores nationwide.

Staying true to vinyl, in May the label will also issue 500 limited edition vinyl copies of The Revenant  on picture disc, with a subset specially packaged for fans of The Revenant through www.Fangoria.com

Vinyl pre-orders can be purchased now at www.tsurumirecords.com

“We are label focused on vinyl productions and this soundtrack is no different in that way,”  enthuses  label owner and Seattle resident Jeff Davis.  “We think fans of the movie will want these as collector items.”

The Revenant  soundtrack features music from Tsurumi acts like garage punks The Beautiful Mothers and experimental rockers The Second Academy, international acts Aqualush and La Mala Rodriguez, classical music from two companies and even an appearance from seminal underground sensation The Shaggies.

“I've always been inspired by really good soundtracks, like Pulp Fiction and Clockwork Orange,” Davis adds.

Three years ago Davis' good friend and independent film maker Kerry Prior, approached him about collaborating on a soundtrack for The Revenant; a modern take on a classic horror story, which he wrote, directed and produced.

The childhood friends grew up together in Cleveland, OH listening to and playing punk rock.

The Revenant began its film festival run with a premier at the 2009 at Toronto's “After Dark” Fest, upon which they dubbed it one of the "10 Movies To See Before You Die." It later ran in theaters in 2012 and is now out on DVD.  Reviews ranging from diverse sources such as The Newark Star-Ledger to DreadCentral.com declare it "sure to become a cult classic."

The film focuses on Second Lieutenant Bart Gregory (David Anders), who is killed under mysterious circumstances in Iraq only to find out that he didn't really die.  Rather, he is undead: a zombie-vampire hybrid, known as the Revenant.   Bart needs blood to hold back decomposition and he finds his way around his new state against the dark backdrop of downtown Los Angeles.

The Revenant appears to be moving towards that cult status with a solid underground and online fan base that is growing daily.  Every cult classic needs a killer soundtrack and now fans of The Revenant won't have to wait any longer.

For Immediate Release:

LAZY (Kansas City) to release debut album Obsession August 2013

LAZY are anything but--after near-constant touring throughout 2012 the art-fucked troop from Kansas City has ponied up to deliver their brazen debut LP, Obsession, an all-fronts punk assault. Kinetic, hook-filled rockers bristle with the frantic energy of Wire or the Buzzcocks, while an experimental bent unifies their twisted anthems: chaotic guitar rustling, gnarled-out bass grooves, machine-gun drumming, desperate vocals.

Aiming for the outer reaches with flamethrower intensity and heartstopping pop sensibility, Obsession is a defiant collection of snotty, upbeat punk tunes with dual male-female vocals and a high-octane heart, snapping and crackling with unhinged exuberance and getting better and better with every upward nudge of the volume dial. Lean and nasty at nine songs and 23 minutes, this scorching summer platter will claw its way right in your skull.

MAPS - NEW ALBUM – VICISSITUDE  RELEASED July 9th, 2013

BOOMKAT EXCLUSIVE “I Heard Them Say” 12” SOLD OUT IN ONE DAY!
Featuring Remixes From ANDY STOTT & MAPS

WATCH A TRAILER FOR THE ALBUM HERE

Maps – aka James Chapman – returns with a brand new album, Vicissitude, released July 9th
Maps partnered with Boomkat to release an exclusive, super-limited hand-stamped 12” vinyl for “I Heard Them Say” (limited to a 100 copies) backed with remixes by Andy Stott and Maps, which sold out in mere hours! This 12” is the first taste of Vicissitude, and lucky for you we can share the tracks with you:

LISTEN To “I Heard Them Say”

Original  //  Andy Stott Remix

While Turning The Mind swung like a hedonistic after-party held after Maps’ critically aclaimed and Mercury Prize nominated debut release, We Can Create, Vicissitude has the distinct feeling of digging deep and confronting reality head on.

With Chapman maintaing his role as the sole creative force behind Maps--Vicissitude is an inward reflection of his mental state during the recording process and continues the soul-wrenching journey carved out by We Can Create.

“The whole album is about change;” says Chapman. “It’s about dealing with a struggle – whatever that may be – and ultimately coming through it.”

As with previous releases, the new album was primarily recorded at Maps’ home in Northampton, and was mixed by Ken Thomas (Sugarcubes, M83, Sigur Ros) and Jolyon Thomas.

Vicissitude focuses, tightens and sharpens Maps' expansive sound. The album might have been born from a long period of self-contemplation, but maybe you do need a while to get simple answers to the
difficult questions.
