DONOVAN

Definitive Mono Editions on Vinyl!

PRE-ORDER THEM HERE

In the revolutionary musical atmosphere of the second half of the 1960s, no artist embodied the era's spirit of creative freedom and freewheeling self-invention more strongly than Donovan. Born Donovan Philips Leitch, the multitalented Scottish troubadour rose from the U.K. folk scene and was initially hailed as Britain's answer to Bob Dylan. But he quickly transcended his original folkie image to adopt a more distinctive and expansive vision that put him in the vanguard of the psychedelic/flower-power explosion, while also exploring his interest in blues, jazz and Eastern music. Embracing an optimistic sensibility that exemplified the era's most idealistic hopes and dreams, Donovan was one of the few '60s artists who managed to make consistently inventive and popular albums while also scoring regularly on the singles charts, and his unique body of work remains as compelling today as when it was first created. Now, Sundazed presents three of Donovan's classic '60s albums in their original LP configurations, featuring high-quality vinyl, definitive mono mixes and complete original cover art.

Artist: Donovan
Title: MELLOW YELLOW
LP 5430 - MONO EDITION LP

Donovan's fourth album, 1967's Mellow Yellow, is a dynamic transitional effort that finds the singer-songwriter-guitarist expanding his artistry into rewarding new areas. In addition to the sing-along title hit, which famously inspired a persistent urban legend regarding the recreational consumption of banana peels, Mellow Yellow encompasses acoustic introspection ("Writer in the Sun"), crafty art-pop ("Museum"), bittersweet insight ("Young Girl Blues"), beat poetry ("The Observation") and a fond nod to British folk icon Bert Jansch ("House of Jansch"). In addition to the production of British Invasion legend Mickie Most, Mellow Yellow features ear-catching arrangements by future Led Zeppelin member John Paul Jones and sitar by cult singer-songwriter Shawn Phillips. With its original mono mix capturing the vibrant vibes of Donovan during this incredibly creative and productive period, this vintage gem has never sounded better!

TRACK LIST:
1. Mellow Yellow
2. Writer in the Sun
3. Sand and Foam
4. The Observation
5. Bleak City Woman
6. House of Jansch
7. Young Girl Blues
8. Museum
9. Hampstead Incident
10. Sunny South Kensington

Artist: Donovan
Title: WEAR YOUR LOVE LIKE HEAVEN
LP 5431 - MONO EDITION LP

Donovan's 1967 release Wear Your Love Like Heaven is one of his brightest and most upbeat albums. Also released as the first half of the landmark two-CD box set A Gift from a Flower to a Garden, it finds Donovan in mostly electric mode, and taking an increasingly active production role that he would maintain for the rest of his career. In addition to the dreamy title hit, the enchanting set features such beloved Donovan standards as "Mad John's Escape," "Oh Gosh," "Skip-A-Long Sam" and the Shakespeare-inspired "Under the Greenwood Tree." In addition to its pristine original mono mix, this definitive LP edition boasts one of Donovan's most memorable cover designs, featuring a haunting infrared photograph of the artist by noted photographer Karl Ferris.

TRACK LIST:
1. Wear Your Love Like Heaven
2. Mad John’s Escape
3. Skip-A-Long Sam
4. Sun
5. There Was a Time
6. Oh Gosh
7. Little Boy in Corduroy
8. Under the Greenwood Tree
9. The Land of Doesn’t Have to Be
10. Someone Singing

-------------------------------------------------

Artist: Donovan
Title: The Hurdy Gurdy Man
LP 5432 - MONO EDITION LP

With 1968’s The Hurdy Gurdy Man, Donovan delivered one of his most full-realized works, with a psychedelic/progressive edge as well as an exotic Eastern flavor that reflects the influence of his then-recent trip with the Beatles to India to study with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi—an experience that helped to inspire Donovan to renounce drug use and encourage his fans to try meditation instead of chemical consumption. While the title track introduced a heavier-sounding Donovan to AM radio listeners and became one of his biggest hit singles, the smash “Jennifer Juniper” maintains his gentle, romantic side. The album’s playful experimental spirit is reflected in the innovative use of drones on such tracks as “Peregrine” and “Tangier,” and in the music-hall diversion of “As I Recall It,” while “A Sunny Day,” “The River Song” and “The Entertaining of a Shy Girl” showcase Donovan’s knack for idyllic, pastoral songcraft. Sundazed’s vinyl edition of The Hurdy Gurdy Man features the album’s rare, much sought-after original mono mix, doing justice to the sonic presence and creative imagination of this vintage gem.

TRACK LIST:
1. Hurdy Gurdy Man
2. Peregrine
3. The Entertaining of a Shy Girl
4. As I Recall It
5. Get Thy Bearings
6. Hi It’s Been a Long Time
7. West Indian Lady
8. Jennifer Juniper
9. The River Song
10. Tangier
11. A Sunny Day
12. The Sun Is a Very Magic Fellow
13. Teas

Donovan - Sunshine Superman
MONO EDITION - LP 5028

By 1966 Donovan had evolved beyond his initial folk troubadour style and fully embraced the budding “flower power” movement. Finding inspiration in jazz, blues, world music and West Coast U.S. rock, he partnered with top UK producer Mickie Most and arranger John Cameron to capture the sound he was pursuing in his mind. Their first collaboration, the “Sunshine Superman” single, was a smashing success, reaching #1 on the U.S. charts and establishing Donovan as a major pop star. Containing a prominent psychedelic vibe and featuring exotic instrumentation like sitar and tablas, it foreshadowed the Summer of Love zeitgeist by a full year. Recorded at EMI Studios London, it also featured session guitarist and soon-to-be Yardbirds/Led Zeppelin member Jimmy Page.

Upon signing with Epic Records in the U.S., Donovan, Most and Cameron traveled to Los Angeles to continue recording at CBS Studios. The subject matter of the songs ran the gamut, reflecting Donovan’s interests and influences. “The Fat Angel,” a tribute to Mama Cass, also name checks The Jefferson Airplane (who returned the favor by covering the song on their live album Bless Its Pointed Little Head). “Bert’s Blues” honors UK folk pioneer Bert Jansch , a major influence on Donovan, Page and many other British guitarists. “The Trip” salutes the L.A. club of the same name and mentions Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, director Federico Fellini and the Buddhist concept of Zen in the lyrics. Elsewhere, the foreboding “Season of the Witch” served as the dark reflection of the cheery “Sunshine Superman” and remains one on Donovan’s most intriguing songs.

Sessions for the Epic album, to be titled Sunshine Superman, concluded in May 1966 and it was released in the U.S. in September of that year. Due to a contract dispute with his former label, Pye Records, the album was not released in the UK until 1967, and then in a greatly altered form. The dispute, stemming from Donovan’s move to Epic, delayed the UK release of future recordings as well. This legal wrangling put Donovan in the rare position of a UK artist whose records came out in the U.S. before they appeared in his homeland. This Sundazed reissue has been sourced from the original analog Epic tapes in the rare U.S. MONO mix! Cameron’s arrangements sparkle as the instrument lineup varies from song to song (listen closely for Shawn Phillips on sitar!) as Most’s production expertly frames each track. Above all, Donovan delivers an incredible collection of songs, perfectly preserving a moment in time. It is now yours to enjoy forever.

 3. Three King Fishers
 4. Ferris Wheel

ASG - Blood Drive

Relapse Records
28 May 2013

Release Dates
May 28, 2013 - N.America
May 27, 2013 - UK/World
May 24, 2013 - Germany, Benelux, Finland

ASG emerge from the sandy shores of North Carolina to deliver their fourth full length and Relapse debut ‘Blood Drive’, produced by Matt Hyde (Slayer, Fu Manchu).  Sun soaked groove heavy riffs that reference equal parts Torche and Queens of the Stone Age ‘Blood Drive’ is nothing short of anthemic.  ASG have toured the country relentlessly with the likes of Corrosion of Conformity, Weedeater and Black Tusk.  But what’s most remarkable about ‘Blood Drive’ is that any of its 12 instantly memorable songs could just as easily be FM radio smash hits.  What sets ASG apart from their swampy peers is singer/guitarist Jason Shi’s voice:  this is a set of songs that are truly SUNG by a guy who can actually SING.  ‘Blood Drive’ is a kick ass blast of sun that elevates ASG to the level of some of their most well-regarded Relapse label-mates like Baroness and Mastodon.

Mountains - Centralia

Mountains’ music is defined by slow builds, and subtle transformations, textures and melodic lines that evolve in a variety of ways to create grand soundscapes and acutely detailed compositions. For Centralia, the duo of Koen Holtkamp and Brendon Anderegg wrote and recorded in a way that mirrors the pace of their music. While the current trend in experimental music is towards hyper-prolificity, Mountains have taken their time on Centralia, resulting in an album that is as precise as it is boundless. Holtkamp and Anderegg approached the album layer by layer, throughout much of the record combining purely-acoustic recordings with purely-electronic sounds rather than using electronics to manipulate acoustic source material. Guitar, cello, organs, electric piano, and more are seamlessly combined with modular electronics, synthesizers and other sound sources. The result is a fully engrossing listen, always shifting focus between acoustic instruments, processed instruments and electronic sound.

Most of Centralia was recorded by Holtkamp and Anderegg at Telescope Recording in Brooklyn, with the exception of the side-long “Propeller” and “Liana,” which are recordings of live shows later augmented with additional instrumentation. The duo recorded, edited, and mixed everything themselves, creating a sonic and aesthetic continuity only achievable through such fastidious and insular methods. Be it the gently melodic acoustic guitar and keyboard of “Tilt” or the steady, subtle pulsating haze of “Living Lens,” the album is as sonically rich as it is compositionally diverse.
Centralia is the most fully realized Mountains album, it encompasses everything Mountains represents, from the analog electronic sound of Air Museum, to the gentle warmth and improvised grandeur of Choral. Mountains are utterly singular in their ability to combine such varied and complex sources into such delicately detailed songs of perceived simple pastoral ambience.

Double LP version includes a free download coupon. We've re-pressed Centralia in a limited quantity on BROWN VINYL. All mailorders will get brown-colored vinyl until we run out!

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF APRIL 29, 2013

DEAR JERRY: While trolling eBay for records, I spotted one on the Tin Pan Alley label titled "Really True" (TPA-127), and it has this most unusual way to credit the artist: "Featuring Billboard's 1954 Disc-Jockey Poll Winner, Carmen Taylor and Orchestra."

I never heard of this person, so I'm wondering if this claim is true.
—J.D. Wellington, Salt Lake City

DEAR J.D: Saying "Billboard's 1954 Disc-Jockey Poll Winner" is both an exaggeration and a misrepresentation.

Tin Pan Alley surely knew that only the top vote-getter in any poll is considered the winner. Furthermore, the claim implies Taylor was a winner in one of the primary pop categories. The truth is she appeared only among the narrow field of R&B singers. Neither winner nor runner-up there, she ranked No. 3 in the Top 15 Most Promising R&B singers. Finishing above Carmen were Roy Hamilton (1), and the Chords (2).

An honest accounting of Taylor's position in that poll would be "No. 1 Most Promising New Female Rhythm and Blues Artist." Putting it that way would still have provided them with some tasty publicity material.

An unrelated observation about this poll is that the most successful act on the entire list, the Drifters, only made it to the No. 5 position.

Billboard introduced their Annual Disc-Jockey Poll in mid-1947, by posting dozens of industry-related questions pertaining to the previous 12 months (June 1946 - June 1947).

One interesting thing about the results, particularly in the poll's early years, is the number of top-ranked newcomers who never lived up to the voters' expectations, whilst some lower ranked artists launched fabulous careers.

Regardless, we know those crystal balls are sometimes cloudy so we'll give those dee-jays a proverbial mulligan.

Just for fun, examine some of these examples of Most Promising Male and Female Newcomers:

1947 winners: Frankie Laine and Fran Warren
Frankie is a good choice but the venerable Doris Day (4) should have been the top female. That she finished below Rosalind Patton (2) and Jane Russell (3) is inconceivable.
Two other superstars that were inexplicably ranked even lower that year are Sarah Vaughan (7) and Peggy Lee (9).

1949 winners: Bill Lawrence and Mindy Carson
Billy Eckstine (3) and Patti Page (8) should have topped the list. For the women, Patti followed by Kay Starr (7) and Rosemary Clooney (3) makes more sense.

1950 winners: Eddie Fisher and Mindy Carson
No problem with Fisher, but Teresa Brewer (8) would have been a better choice — especially since Mindy Carson won in 1949 (on their poll, not mine).
We believe the Most Promising category should be reserved for newcomers. After all, you only get one rookie year.
Tessie was even passed up by Toni Arden (5) and the much lesser-known Kay Brown (6).
Other legends in the Top 15 men that year include: Guy Mitchell (3); Don Cherry (5); Tony Bennett (9); and Dean Martin (13).

1954 winners: Bob Manning and Betty Madigan
The voters misfired in both polls this time. Harry Belafonte (15) and Kitty Kallen (9) should have been on top.
Harry was much too low, even more so considering most of the names above him: Bob Manning (1); Tommy Leonetti (2); Georgie Shaw (4); Charlie Applewhite (6); Rush Adams (8); Joe Foley (9); Gary Crosby (10); Bob Stewart (11); Tommy Mara (12); and David Whitfield (13). None came even close to Belafonte's success, and several of these guys will have you asking "who's he?"
Among the ladies, here are the eight who surprisingly ranked higher than Kitty Kallen: Betty Madigan (1); Peggy King (2); Denise Lor (3); Jill Corey (4); Joyce Taylor (5); Micki Marlo (6) Chris Connor (7); and Connie Russell (8).

Making the result far more mystifying is this exact same dee jay poll ranked Kitty as the No. 1 Most Played Female, and the No. 2 Most Played Artist overall, second only to Perry Como.

First most played … yet ninth most promising? Talk about flying in the face of reason.

Carmen Taylor, who prompted this topic, does not appear anywhere among 1954's Top 20 gals.

DEAR JERRY: Just bought "Celebrate - The Three Dog Night Story 1965-1975" (MCA 10956) a double CD history of the band.

I got quite a surprise near the end of "An Old Fashioned Love Song," when the singing turned into something I'd never heard before.

I still like it, though it is definitely not the hit song played on the radio in the 1970s.

Do you know anything about this newly discovered oddity?
—Pete Musgrove, McMinnville, Ore.

DEAR PETE: You're right about it being a noticeably different track, especially at the 2:45 mark when they go into a strange sequence unlike both the original 45 (Dunhill 4294) and on their "Harmony" LP (Dunhill 50108), both from 1971.

I am at a loss to describe the variance using text, but when a person familiar with the original hears it, they'll certainly know it's different.

For you, the alternative version may be newly discovered, but it has been available on LP since the 1974 collection "Joy to the World: Their Greatest Hits" (Dunhill 50178).

This has nothing to do with the different versions, but "An Old Fashioned Love Song" is shown on some labels as "Old Fashioned Love Song."

IZ ZAT SO? For anyone wondering why Three Dog Night, who first recorded in 1968, has an album titled "The Three Dog Night Story 1965-1975," it includes pre-Dog Night solo tracks by Cory Wells and Danny Hutton:

1965 "Say Goodbye to Donna," by Cory Wells and the Enemy's (sic) (Valiant 714), and Danny Hutton's "Roses and Rainbows" (HBR 447)

1966 "Funny How Love Can Be" (Danny Hutton) (MGM 13502)

Conspicuous by their absence are three singles by the Enemys (with Wells), (MGM 13485 "Glitter and Gold"; MGM 13525 "Hey Joe!"; and MGM 13573 "Mo-Jo Woman"), and Hutton's excellent "Big Bright Eyes" (HBR 453).

Another bonus is the previously unissued Brian Wilson tune, "Time to Get Alone," recorded in 1967 when Cory, Danny, and Chuck Negron briefly performed as Redwood.

Music Record Shop Weekly

Welcome to the new weekly feature (look for it every Friday) called MusicRecordShop Weekly.  Here we take a look at new releases and some hard to find vinyl that will easily satisfy even the most serious record collectors.  Here's five that we think you will enjoy!

1. Wolfmother - Wolfmother

Considering the '60s psychedelic heavy metal sound which Wolfmother gained fame with in 2006 with their debut album 'Wolfmother', they could be called "a band out of time". Andrew Stockdale, Chris Ross and Myles Heskett formed the band in 2000 and in 2004 they recorded a four-track demo so they could book shows. From then on the band shifted into a higher gear: a jump to the majors, the release of their eponymous self-titled debut album and a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2007. Music On Vinyl has given this release the special MOV-treatment resulting in a beautiful gatefold sleeve containing two coloured 180-grams audiophile LP's. With this mindblowing Rock album your stereo doesn't need to go to eleven to get that extra push over the edge!!

2. Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats - Mind Control

It is a fact that Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats have, in recent times, become one of the most talked about rock bands currently in existence. The fact that no one even knew what they looked like until very recently is testimony to the enigma that surrounds this terrifying, yet extremely melodically minded cult. It is another fact that they have become one of the most collectable bands on the planet, with first press vinyl editions of Blood Lust fetching up to and over 700 (yes, British Pounds!) on the collectors market. Pretty remarkable for a record that is barely two years old. Mind Control (their third full-length album) is set for release in April 2013, following their two debut London sell-out concerts at The Garage. Within it's blood soaked grooves you will hear shocking tales of bizarre desert ceremonies, religious brainwashing and drug inspired mass slaughter! Imagine the original Alice Cooper band jamming in a cell with early Black Sabbath and the Stooges, whilst sitting on murder charges and you may get a glimpse into their fuzzed up world of exploding tube amps and cymbal smashing mayhem. However, this enticing act of musical manipulation is merely the icing upon a very sick cake. Mind Control is a concept album with a theme that makes the acts and intentions of the likes of Charles Manson and Jim Jones seem like petty crimes. What makes Mind Control scarier than most albums is that it doesnt seem as sinister on the surface as it really is deep down within the core of its black acid-drenched world of pain and torture. The infectious energy surges and pulverizing grooves of Mind Crawler, tell the tale of a man on a mission who has fled from Mount Abraxas after mercilessly murdering all the members of his cult. 3. RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS - CALIFORNICATION
Many figured that the Red Hot Chili Peppers' days as undisputed alternative kings were numbered after their lackluster 1995 release One Hot Minute, but like the great phoenix rising from the ashes, this legendary and influential outfit returned back to greatness with 1999's Californication. An obvious reason for their rebirth is the reappearance of guitarist John Frusciante (replacing Dave Navarro), who left the Peppers in 1992 and disappeared into a haze of hard drugs before cleaning up and returning to the fold in 1998.

Frusciante was a main reason for such past band classics as 1989's Mother's Milk and 1991's Blood Sugar Sex Magik, and proves once and for all to be the quintessential RHCP guitarist. Anthony Kiedis' vocals have improved dramatically as well, while the rhythm section of bassist Flea and drummer Chad Smith remains one of rock's best. The quartet's trademark punk-funk can be sampled on such tracks as "Around the World," "I Like Dirt," and "Parallel Universe," but the more pop-oriented material proves to be a pleasant surprise -- "Scar Tissue," "Otherside," "Easily," and "Purple Stain" all contain strong melodies and instantly memorable choruses. And like their 1992 introspective hit "Under the Bridge," there are even a few mellow moments -- "Porcelain," "Road Trippin'," and the title track. With the instrumentalists' interplay at an all-time telepathic high and Kiedis peaking as a vocalist, Californication is a bona fide Chili Peppers classic.

Musicology 101

Let's have a little fun, so here are some rock and roll nuggets so you can win at music trivia games and become a top musicologist!

Santana's 1970, Billboard #4 hit, "Black Magic Woman" was written by Peter Green and first appeared as a Fleetwood Mac single that rose to #37 in the UK in 1969.

The record for the longest time between number one albums belongs to Johnny Cash. He had the top

LP on Billboard's Hot 200 chart with "At San Quentin" in 1969. In 2006, he repeated this feat with "American V: A Hundred Highways", a span of 37 years.

The Turtles' rhythm guitarist Jim Tucker quit the band in 1967 after his musical hero John Lennon publicly berated him in a drunkenly tirade for trying to be just like The Beatles. In March of that year, The Turtles "Happy Together" had knocked The Beatles "Penny Lane" out of Billboard's top spot.

In early 1967, Elvis Presley bought a 163 acre Mississippi ranch he dubbed The Circle G for $300,000. One of the horses he bought for the ranch was a mare that he named after William B. Ingram, who was the mayor of Memphis at the time. He called her Mare Ingram.

After Jan Berry of Jan and Dean was seriously injured in a car accident on April 12, 1966 and could no longer perform, his partner Dean Torrence formed a graphics design company that was responsible for over 200 album covers including "The Turtles Golden Hits", nine for The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and several for Harry Nilsson. He won a Grammy Award for Best Album Cover of the Year in 1972 for the LP "Pollution" by the group of the same name and was nominated on three other occasions.

By 1968, around eighty-five different manufacturers had sold over 2.4 million cassette players world wide and in that year alone, the cassette business was worth about $150 million.

B.B. King named his guitar Lucille after nearly losing it in a fire started by two men fighting over a woman with that name.

Misheard lyrics, such as "There's a bathroom on the right" instead of the correct "There's a bad moon on the rise" - is called a mondegreen.

The Righteous Brothers' 1965 hit "Unchained Melody" started out as the theme to an obscure 1955 prison film called Unchained, based on the non-fiction book Prisoners are People by Kenyon J. Scudder. The movie's plot centers around a man who contemplates either escaping from prison to live life on the run, or completing his sentence and returning to his wife and family. Vocalist Todd Duncan sang the original movie theme which was nominated for a Best Song Oscar but lost to "Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing".

Bruce Springsteen wrote "Dancing In The Dark" after a heated argument with his manager, Jon Landau, who wanted a hit single for the "Born In The USA" album. Springsteen later said about the song: "It went as far in the direction of Pop music as I wanted to go, and probably a little farther."

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF APRIL 22, 2013

DEAR JERRY: Back when it was a hit, I bought the single of "Hula Love," by Buddy Knox, and I still have it. And a few things about it still mystify me.

It would be great to ask Buddy Knox for help, but since he is no longer with us I'll ask you.

They concern just three words in the first verse:

"On the isle of Fillalilla out Hawaii way
A hula maiden gay, strolled by a moonlit bay
There come-a to court her over the water
From a savage Zinga Zula land
A bolo chieftain grand, sang her this lei"

1. My world atlas lists no island, town, area, or anything named Fillalilla. I've even checked other possible spellings.
2. It does have a Zinga and a Zula, two separate towns in Africa but nowhere near each other, and both are thousands of miles from Hawaii.
3. I know what the Hawaiian lei is, but how do you sing one?

What am I missing?
—Lena Mazurski, Baltimore

DEAR LENA: Just a few details that complete the "Hula Love" story.

Roulette and other labels list only "Buddy Knox," with no composing specifics, but the sheet music takes the credit to the next level with "Words and music written by Buddy Knox."

What very few people in 1957 knew was that the music and many of the same lyrics were written and recorded in 1911, over 22 years before Buddy was born.

With lyrics by Edward Madden and music by Percy Wenrich, they titled it "My Hula Hula Love." They first offered the tune to a promising newcomer, a contralto performing as Dolly Connolly. It would soon be her debut single.

Connolly's good fortune is attributed less to her being in the right place at the right time, and more to her being the wife of Percy Wenrich.

In May, Columbia Records recorded "My Hula Hula Love" and "Red Rose Rag" (A-1028) by Dolly, and it became the first of several hit records for her.

Victor quickly covered "My Hula Hula Love," but as a duet by Ada Jones and Billy Murray (Victor 16910), two of their biggest stars at the time. Still, their effort didn't match the success of Connolly's.

Other singers plus a few instrumentalists waxed the song in the years ahead, all properly credited to Edward Madden and Percy Wenrich.

Until 1957.

Why Buddy Knox received sole credit for both words and music has never been made public. Though he clearly created some new lyrics, enough of the original work is retained to warrant crediting all three composers.

Regardless, nothing much about the case made news because a confidential out-of-court settlement averted any potential litigation.

To this day, BMI still credits Knox with no mention of Madden or Wenrich, and that is appropriate if he in fact purchased ownership from the previous writers.

Now to that first verse of "Hula Love" (1957). Note the similarities and differences between it (above) and "My Hula Hula Love" (1911):

"It was silent on the isle of Il-o-ila, down Hawaii way,
A hula maiden gay, strolled by the moonlit bay
There came to court her o'er the water
From a savage Zinga Zulu land
A bolo chieftain grand, who sang this lay"

It seems that neither Il-o-ila nor Fillalilla are real places, at least not "out Hawaii way." There is, however, a Philippine Province named Iloilo in the Western Visayas region.

As for the lay/lei homophone mix-up, "lay" was a common synonym in the 18th and 19th centuries for "song."

The first example of this usage that comes to mind is Walter Scott's famous poem, "The Lay of the Last Minstrel" (1805). It is about the Song of the Last Singer.

IZ ZAT SO? Edward Madden wrote a lay titled "The Zinga Zula Man" for the 1910 Broadway musical, "He Came from Milwaukee."

That moniker may have inspired the Zinga reference in "My Hula Hula Love," but if so, why is it Zulu in "My Hula Hula Love" (1911), yet Zula in "Hula Love" (1957)?

Chrome Releasing 'Lost Chrome Tracks' in June

Seminal avant-punk psychedelic outfit Chrome will be releasing a full album (1 CD or 2 LPs) of previously unreleased material from 1979/80 on King of Spades Records this coming June. The album is titled: Half Machine from the Sun, The Lost Chrome Tracks from '79-'80.

Guitarist Helios Creed explains: "Damon Edge & I made these 'Lost Chrome Tracks' during recording sessions for Half Machine Lip Moves & Red Exposure. We had so much material, good tracks went unused. I didn't even realize the tapes were lost (and sold) due to an unpaid bill! I forgot about them until they were played for me recently, some 30 years later, but listening to the work I was brought right back in time where we had left off. I remembered for instance that I felt 'Something Rhythmic' was a special track, maybe even a hit. I guess it wasn't time to complete these tracks then, because now is their time."

Known for their experimental, de/re-construction of rock and roll, many of these Lost Chrome Tracks have a tendency towards catchy melodies and strong hooks, while still maintaining chrome's signature innovation, weirdness and pile-driver rhythm. Other numbers are pure experimental noise. In all, this double album opens a window into the diverse sounds of this groundbreaking band and this groundbreaking era in rock and roll.

Chrome's blend of raw energy and mind-bending audio manipulation influenced a wide range of musical genres, from the avant-rock of Sonic Youth and the Flaming Lips to Industrial rockers like Nine Inch Nails and Ministry. Theirs was "a Cyber-Punk vision of the future that came a decade before the term was coined," as psychedelic connoisseur Julian Cope put it.

Chrome was founded by vocalist/drummer Damon Edge in 1975, inspired by proto-punk pioneers the Stooges as well as the radical experimentation of John Cage. After releasing their debut album The Visitation on Edge's own Siren label, guitarist and vocalist Helios Creed joined Chrome, replacing their original guitarist. He played bass as well as guitar, sang and composed songs with Edge, coming in to make their commercial and artistic breakthrough Alien Soundtracks Chrome's 2nd album -- an immediate underground hit. Creed's guitar work "exploded the possibilities of what psychedelic, punk, new wave and industrial rock could sound like" claims Examiner.com's Andrew Stecz.

Creed and Edge comprised the main creative force behind their next album, Half Machine Lip Moves, as another founding member left. "Nobody ever started an album with as much fire as Chrome did with the opening of Half Machine Lip Moves" proclaims Cope. "[it] remains my favorite beginning to any rock n' roll record, surpassing even Iggy and the Stooges' Raw Power." Chrome continued Alien Soundtracks' Sci-Fi-Punk, collage of searing rock with noise, sound-bites, scrap-metal percussion and unusual manipulations of their instruments and amplifiers, but done heavier with Creed's guitar feedback and Edge's powerful drumming to the fore.

Chrome signed to the UK's Beggar's Banquet label for their fourth album Red Exposure and Third From the Sun, their fifth which included contributions from Edge's new wife Fabienne Shine (of French punk sensations Shaking Street). They also released 5 EPs and singles on various labels from '79-'82. Afterwards Creed left the band and established himself as unique and powerful solo artist, touring extensively and recording prolifically. He continued to be a influence through the grunge and noise rock indie scenes and he toured with Nik Turner's (Hawkwind) band "Space Ritual." Creed turned out 21 solo albums and several singles in his own right, from 1985 to 2011. After Edge's death in 1997, Creed took the helm of Chrome on stage and in the studio, making four more Chrome albums, completing one Edge had started before his passing, Angel of the Clouds, released in 2002 (and re-released by King of Spades Records this year).

"I've created new music for close to 40 years now," states Creed." This 'Lost Chrome Tracks' release & a new Chrome album I've been recording this year, will be my 37th & 38th albums."

A Band Called Death

Before Bad Brains, the Sex Pistols or even the Ramones, there was a band called Death.  Punk before punk existed, three teenage brothers in the early '70s formed a band in their spare bedroom, began playing a few local gigs and even pressed a single in the hopes of getting signed.  But this was the era of Motown and emerging disco.  Record companies found Death's music - and band name - too intimidating, and the group were never given a fair shot, disbanding before they even completed one album.  Equal parts electrifying rockumentary and epic family love story, A Band Called Death chronicles the incredible fairy-tale journey of what happened almost three decades later, when a dusty 1974 demo tape made its way out of the attic and found an audience several generations younger.  Playing music impossibly ahead of its time, Death is now being credited as the first black punk band (hell...the first punk band!), and are finally receiving their long overdue recognition as true rock pioneers.
