Small Faces - Ogden's Nut Gone Flake (vinyl picture disc preorder)

Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake, recorded in late 1967 and early 1968 and released in the summer of '68, is the Small Faces' best-known and most successful album.

Alongside tracks such as 'Lazy Sunday', 'Afterglow' and 'Rollin' Over', it contained a conceptual twist with the addition of the eccentric story of 'Happiness Stan', narrated by Stanley Unwin.

This re-mastered 180 gm heavyweight picture disc vinyl edition of the 1968 Small Faces Psychedelic classic features the newly re-mastered mono mix of the original album.

Preorder now for 10th June release date.

Anathema - Untouchable (double vinyl preorder)

In May 2012 Anathema released Weather Systems, the most successful album of the band's two decade plus career.

Scoring high in end of year polls around the world, the album cemented Anathema's reputation as one of the most interesting bands of recent times.

Following the release of the album, the band embarked on a lengthy world tour. The European part of the tour opened with a special one-off gig at the ancient Roman theatre of Philippopolis where the band were joined by the Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra.

Untouchable captures the magic of this unique evening.

Available on double heavyweight vinyl packaged in a gatefold sleeve with printed inner sleeves.

Please note, an audio visual cd/dvd version of the concert will be available in August, 2013.

Pre-order now for 24th June release date.

Music Record Shop Weekly

Welcome to the weekly feature (look for it every Friday) called MusicRecordShop Weekly.   Here we take a look at new releases and some hard to find vinyl that will easily satisfy even the most serious record collectors.  Mark has put together a neat package of vinyl deals that will get any record collectors attention.

Iron Maiden - Maiden England Vinyl 2-LP (Picture Disc) Import 2013

MAIDEN ENGLAND '88. Now available for the very first time on double LP, this live show was filmed across two sold-out nights at Birmingham N.E.C Arena, UK in November 1988 during the band's "Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son World Tour."

Orig.  $47.99 ----------------- >>>>>>>>>  Sale  $39.99

DAFT PUNK - HOMEWORK (2-LP) 2012

Daft Punk's full-length debut is a funk-house hailstorm, giving real form to a style of straight-ahead dance music not attempted since the early fusion days of on-the-one funk and dance-party disco. Thick, rumbling bass, vocoders, choppy breaks and beats, and a certain brash naiveté permeate the record from start to finish, giving it the edge of an almost certain classic. While a few fall flat, the best tracks make this one essential.

Orig.  $39.99  ----------------->>>>>>>> Sale  $29.99

AEROSMITH - MUSIC FROM ANOTHER DIMENSION! (VINYL 2-LP + CD) 2012 (RED VINYL)

First Album of All-New Material in 11 Years! Steven Tyler (vocals), Joe Perry (guitar), Brad Whitford (guitar), Tom Hamilton (bass) and Joey Kramer (drums) are back with the new Columbia Records album Music From Another Dimension. It marks Aerosmith's 15th studio album and their first studio album of all-new material in 11 years. The album was recorded in Los Angeles and at the band's studio in Massachusetts; it was produced by Jack Douglas, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, with the exception of three tracks produced by Tyler and Marti Frederiksen. Music From Another Dimension presents Aerosmith in ferociously fine form and at the peak of their powers. They're the only band of their stature with all-original members and who are playing better than ever have before. In addition to the album's first two singles "What Could Have Been Love" and "Lover A Lot," Music From Another Dimension abounds with one highlight after another, including "Out Go The Lights," "Oh Yeah," "Luv XXX," "We All Fall Down," "Street Jesus" and "Can't Stop Loving You," on which Tyler duets with Carrie Underwood. The album also includes "Freedom Fighter" which features Johnny Depp on

NEIL YOUNG - PSYCHEDELIC PILL (VINYL 3-LP) 2012

"Neil Young And Crazy Horse have revealed that their second album of this year, 'Psychedelic Pill', will be released on October 29. The legendary rockers have also unveiled the tracklisting for the album, which follows the covers LP 'Americana', which came out in June. The album opens with a song called 'Driftin' Back', which almost 28 minutes long. 'Psychedelic Pill' is Young's first album of all new material with Crazy Horse since 2003 and will feature the full Crazy Horse line-up of Billy Talbot, Ralph Molina and Frank Sampedro. The Neil Young Times states that the album was recorded straight after the band finished their 'Americana' sessions at the Audio Casa Blanca studios. After playing a number of Stateside shows last month, Neil Young and Crazy Horse will head off on a full tour in the US and Canada in October and November, including an appearance at the Austin City Limits festival. As of yet, no plans for a UK or European tour have been announced." -NME.com

Orig.  $79.99  ----------------- >>>>>>>>  Sale  $58.99

Volbeat - Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies Vinyl 3-LP&CD Boxset Import 2013

In the two-and-half years since Volbeat's wildly successful Beyond Hell/Above Heaven, they've traveled some miles, both literally and figuratively. They toured not only Europe but the U.S. and Canada in support for nearly a year, and parted ways with lead guitarist Thomas Bredahl. A permanent replacement was found in Robert Caggiano, formerly of Anthrax, who was enlisted to produce Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies and play on select tracks. His addition has proved integral to the band's ever evolving sound. While the meld of various kinds of heavy metal, country, and rockabilly is still present here -- it is now undoubtedly the sound of Volbeat itself -- the lines between those styles are less pronounced. The sometimes jarring shift from rockabilly to thrash, from death metal to the Johnny Cash-country on previous albums, still happens, but here these sounds often coexist within the same song.

Orig.  $42.99  ----------------- >>>>>>>>  Sale  $34.99

Cream - Live At The Royal Albert Hall 2005 Vinyl 3-LP Import 2013

Cream reunited in the spring of 2005, setting aside nearly 40 years of acrimony for a series of gigs at the Royal Albert Hall in May, which was later followed by a few shows at Madison Square Garden about a month after souvenirs of the London shows.

Orig.  $129.99  -----------------  >>>>>>>> Sale  $109.99

Mad Season - Above

This expanded double 12" vinyl edition includes the original album in its entirety as well as three songs from the band's unfinished second album with newly recorded vocals by Mark Lanegan, a previously unreleased instrumental, "Interlude," and a remixed version of Mad Season's cover of John Lennon 's "I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier."

Above is the only studio album by the American rock band Mad Season, released on March 14, 1995 through Columbia Records. The album has been certified gold by the RIAA in the United States. The album's gloomy, black and white cover art was illustrated by Staley. The drawing was based upon a photograph of Staley and his then-girlfriend, Demri Lara Parrott.

Musicology 101

Let's have a little fun, so here are some rock and roll nuggets so you can win at music trivia games and become a top musicologist!

The album simply titled 'The Beatles,' which most fans call the 'White Album,' was originally slated to be named 'A Doll's House.'  That title was scrapped after the British progressive band Family released an album earlier in 1968, bearing a similar title.

Steely Dan founders Donald Fagen and Walter Becker first got together in a band known as The Bad Rock Group and later as The Leather Canary. Future comedy star Chevy Chase was their drummer.

Producer Phil Spector played guitar on the Rolling Stones' "Play With Fire."

When the TV show Cops went on the air in 1989, they used the now familiar "Bad Boys" by the Jamaican reggae group Inner Circle as the theme song. The Big Beat label didn't issue the song as a single until 1993, but when they did, it sold over seven million copies and rose to #8 on the Billboard chart.

The epitaph on Sonny Bono's headstone reads: "And The Beat Goes On."

Although singer/songwriter Harry Nilsson placed eight songs on Billboard's Top 40 chart, including the Grammy Award winning, million seller "Everybody's Talkin,'" he disliked performing in public so much that he seldom appeared in concert and rarely made televised appearances.

The original version of "Louie Louie" by The Kingsmen cost just $36 to record, but sold over 12 million copies.

Although he sang the lead vocal for "Sugar Sugar", a song that sold over 13 million copies and was named Billboard magazine's Record of The Year, Ron Dante did not earn any royalties for the hit. Just happy to be recording at all in 1969, he did the session for the musicians' union scale wage.

Artie Kornfeld, one of the main concert promoters of the 1969 Woodstock Festival, co-wrote Jan And Dean's "Dead Man's Curve" and The Cowsills' "The Rain, The Park And Other Thing."  At age 21, he became the youngest vice-president at Capitol Records and as a writer, producer, manager and promoter, he earned over 100 Gold and Platinum discs while writing over 75 Billboard charted songs.

Louden Wainwright III, who reached #16 on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Dead Skunk In The Middle Of The Road" in 1973, was also an actor who appeared in three different episodes of M*A*S*H.

UNKIND: Reveal New Album Details

Pelon Juuret coming July 9th via Relapse Records

Finnish hardcore heroes UNKIND have revealed the album details for their upcoming sixth full-length entitled Pelon Juuret (Translation:  Roots of Fear). The album was recorded with producer Kari Nieminen at Noisecamp studios in Turku, Finland at the end of 2012.  Pelon Juuret continues in the direction of the group’s previous work, offering up a furious fusion of d-beat hardcore crossed with a highly creative touch of atmospherics —as if Mogwai made a record of Tragedy covers or From Ashes Rise were influenced by Explosions In The Sky.

The album will be released on CD/LP/Digital via Relapse Records on July 9th in North America, July 8th in the UK / World, and July 5th in Germany, Benelux and Finland.  Pre-order packages are available via Relapse here.

By October 1969, things were radically different for The Monkees. Their NBC show had left prime time, Peter Tork had left the group, and Top 40 hits were no longer a sure thing. It was in this atmosphere that Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones and Michael Nesmith exerted more creative control to record THE MONKEES PRESENT . The resulting album is one of the group's most varied, from the iconic single, "Listen To The Band," to Micky's anti-war anthem, "Mommy And Daddy," Davy's lush "French Song," and Michael's Nashville-tinged barn-burner, "Good Clean Fun."

Strictly limited to 5,000 individually numbered boxes, the newly re-mastered and expanded THE MONKEES PRESENT is the latest release in Rhino Handmade's lavish Monkees boxed sets. Packed with a whopping 85 tracks (60 previously unreleased!) over 3 CD's, Monkees historian and reissue producer Andrew Sandoval has raided the vault, pulling previously unheard songs, alternate versions and backing tracks from the original master tapes. THE MONKEES PRESENT also includes an exclusive bonus 7" vinyl single for "Good Clean Fun (Alternate Mix)" b/w "Mommy and Daddy (Mono Mix)" in a picture sleeve.

THE MONKEES PRESENT ships in late July, but is available now for pre-order exclusively at Monkees.com. This box is not available from any store or other online retailer and is sure to sell out, so reserve your copy now HERE.

Please note: The release date 7/30/13 is not yet finalized and subject to change. You will be notified if there is a delay in the arrival date for your product. Cover art is not final and may change.

R.E.M. 25th Green Anniversary

When R.E.M. went to Memphis, Tennessee's famed Ardent Studios in 1988 to record their major label debut for Warner Bros Records, singer Michael Stipe, legend has it, tasked his band mates, Bill Berry, Peter Buck, and Mike Mills, with a singular mission: to "not write any more R.E.M.-type songs." Emboldened by this charge, the band ventured into the previously unexplored realm of bubblegum pop ("Pop Song '89," "Stand"), freely swapped instruments amongst themselves, and even went so far as to introduce the mandolin into their repertoire for the first time ("Hairshirt"). Bolstered by Stipe's increasingly politically-conscious and socially-conscientious lyrics, Green emerged as the band's most fully-realized record to date--a bold claim given the trajectory of their IRS years' recordings (Murmur, Reckoning, Fables of the Reconstruction, Lifes Rich Pageant, and Document) but accurate nonetheless.

To celebrate the landmark album's 25-year anniversary, Rhino is releasing a two-disc deluxe edition that features the remastered original album accompanied by a disc of live performances taken from the penultimate show of R.E.M.'s 130-date Green World Tour. All twenty-one songs were recorded in Greensboro, North Carolina, on November 10, 1989, just miles from where Berry, Buck, Mills and Stipe had their very first recording session at Mitch Easter's Drive-In Studio in Winston-Salem. The set captures the confident spirit of Green ("Get Up," "World Leader Pretend," and "You Are The Everything") as well as the timelessness of early favorites like "Fall On Me," "Finest Worksong," and "The One I Love," and hints at the future with early versions of tracks that would ultimately appear on Out Of Time.

GREEN: 25TH ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION will be available on May 14th, but you can pre-order it now at Amazon

very controversial Bowie video making the rounds on the net (banned at YouTube)

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF MAY 6, 2013

DEAR JERRY: Last year about this time, you mentioned that Adele topped both of Billboard's most prestigious year-end polls: Pop Song of the Year ("Rolling in the Deep") and Pop Album of the Year ("21").

You didn't say how uncommon this is, so please tell us how many have accomplished this feat?
—Arnold Morrison, Minneapolis

DEAR ARNOLD: The quick reply is seven (each below with an asterisk), but let's answer your question in greater detail, in anticipation of others you will surely inspire.

With only seven decades to consider, we can review all who won in two or more of the six possible categories:

Song of the Year and Album of the Year, both for Pop, R&B, and Country.

In Pop, 1956 was the first year to honor both songs and albums. Country followed suit in 1965, and R&B in '66.

Here are the stars who ranked No. 1 at least twice in the same year:

1957 Elvis Presley: Pop Song ("All Shook Up") and R&B Song ("Jailhouse Rock")
1959 Johnny Horton: Pop and Country Song ("The Battle of New Orleans")
1961 Bobby Lewis: Pop and R&B Song ("Tossin' and Turnin'")
1967 Jack Greene: Country Song ("All the Time") and Album ("There Goes My Everything")

Notes and observations:

Elvis is the only artist with two Song of the Year winners in the same year (1957) that are two completely different singles. Neither he nor the Beatles had an Album of the Year in the 20th century, though the choices do not always reflect actual sales.

Not until 1967 did anything even resembling rock or teen-oriented music win Album of the Year, that being "More of the Monkees."

For nine consecutive years (1957 through 1965), the Album of the year was either of the original cast or soundtrack genre.

DEAR JERRY: Your column about songs banned by radio stations took me back to my childhood, in the early 1960s, and a comedy record my parents used to play when they thought I was sleeping.

Though somewhat off-color, it was not even close to being X-rated.

I especially remember it being recorded at a nearby bar, which provides a clue. We lived on Crenshaw near Artesia Blvd, in Torrance, Calif.

The only other clue is a parody of "Secret Love" the comedian sang, that has been in my memory for about 50 years.

His version began like this:

"Once I had a secret love
She wore a flimsy negligee
Last night we were on Channel 4
My secret love's no secret anymore"

One day I'd like to hear this obscure album again. Do you have any helpful details?
—Gilles Marchand, Rolling Hills, Calif.

DEAR GILLES: Obscure is right. This LP was originally only available at the club you vaguely recall, then named the Roaring '20s Lounge.

In Torrance at 166th and Crenshaw, less than a mile from Artesia Blvd., their primary entertainer was club owner Charles David Thomas, who performed as Bub Thomas.

His privately pressed album, recorded live in 1960 at the Roaring '20s, is "Smoker Stories" (BT 1000), and it should be available online for under $25.
