Beware of Mr. Baker DVD Contest

A couple of months ago ,the CVR blog, working with SnagFilms, a New York-based film distributor; gave away a free download to watch the film 'Beware Of Mr. Baker.'

Well, luckily they are back again and this time we have a DVD to give away.  You can enter by emailing the CVR blog with the words "Beware of Mr. Baker DVD Contest" in the subject line to this email address rbenson30@wi.rr.com.  Winner will be chosen in a random drawing held on Friday May 24, 2013. Limit one entry per person, winner will be announced as soon as possible.

'Beware of Mr. Baker' is a vivid portrait of a rock icon, including the good, the bad and the over the top lifestyle of one of rock’s legendary wild men.

At home with rock ‘n’ roll monster Ginger Baker, Cream’s legendary scarlet-maned, hell-raising drummer. This no-holds-barred, sad, and hilarious portrait of the man referred to as rock’s first great drummer (and perhaps still its best) lets him tell his own story, intercut with footage of his continent-hopping life, from London to L.A., Nigeria, Italy, South Africa, and (way) beyond. Baker may have broken the mold musically, but his violent, dyspeptic mood swings, fueled by a multi-decade heroin addiction, went a long way to making him persona non grata even among the music greats who still revere his work. Eric Clapton, Johnny Rotten, Charlie Watts, and Lars Ulrich, Baker’s 4 wives, and 3 grown children all have something to say about him: “He’s a force of nature,” “he’s the greatest drummer any of us had ever heard,” “he’s mad,” and “he’s fairly consistently horrible” are just a few of them.

[5 stars]

“RUDELY FUNNY! The old stories and misadventures… out they come, reshaped by Bulger  via archival footage and sly animation into a testament to Baker’s musicianship… The guy basically invented the modern drum solo.” – Joshua Rothkopf, Time Out New York

“Makes a persuasive argument that Mr. Baker was the greatest of all rock drummers.”  – A.O. Scott, New York Times

“Captivating! A must-see film.” – Margaret Barton-Fumo, Filmcomment.com

“Baker comes across as a living embodiment of his music. Baker remains a fierce creature of music.”
– Eric Kohn, Indiewire.com

“A hell of a musician and a real son of a bitch.”  – Henry Stewart, L Magazine

Otis Rush – Right Place, Wrong Time – Bullfrog Records / Pure Pleasure Records (vinyl)

Pure Pleasure Records has re-mastered Right Time, Wrong Place to 180-gram vinyl with sterling results.

Published on May 14, 2013

Otis Rush – Right Place, Wrong Time – Bullfrog Records (1976) BF 301/ Pure Pleasure Records (2012) 180-gram stereo audiophile vinyl, 40:44 ****:

(Otis Rush – guitar, vocals; Doug Kilmer – bass; John Kahn – bass; Bob Jones – drums; Fred Burton – guitar; Mark Naftalin – piano; Ira Kamin – organ; John Wilmeth – trumpet; Ron Stallings – tenor saxophone; Hart McNee – alto saxophone)

Otis Rush was born in Mississippi and eventually moved to Chicago to become a blues legend. That narrative may not differentiate him from a lot of blues pickers. However, Rush was a rare left-handed player. In an unusual twist, he played a left-handed guitar, strung upside down with the low E string on the bottom. There is no mistaking his sound. He earned his pedigree in Westside Chicago blues clubs and recorded for several labels, including Chess.

In the sixties he was produced by rock stars Michael Bloomfield and Nick Gravenites. Adding rock and soul to the blues repertoire introduced Rush to a new generation of fans. At Capitol Records (the same label that turned down The Doors) he laid down tracks for an album titled Right Place, Wrong Time.. The project was scrapped, but Rush eventually bought the master tapes. Five years later, in 1976, it was released on Bullfrog Records.

Pure Pleasure Records has re-mastered Right Time, Wrong Place to audiophile vinyl. Listening to this musical giant, it appears that Capitol did not have a sense of the power of a true blues musician. The album gets off to a rousing start on Ike Turner’s “Tore Up”. All of the classic blues chops are represented in this brisk, up tempo romp. Rush’s guitar leads are precise and crisp. He is as good a vocalist as any of the older blues giants. Different from the template, he adds a short key shift on the bridge. As he transitions to late night vibe (title cut), the arrangements which showcase his guitar and vocals remain constant. On the first instrumental “Easy Go”, the soulful punctuation (especially by the horn section), amps up this muscular jam. His rhythm section (John Kahn/bass; Bob Jones/drums and Fred Burton/rhythm guitar) is complementary and cohesive.

Most of the songs percolate, and Rush’s tasteful concise guitar riffs and vocal phrasing are fluid. Albert King’s “Natural Ball” is dynamic. The music has a lot of soul. This resonates on the second instrumental, “I Wonder Why”. This is Chicago blues at its finest. In a more conventional translation, “Your Turn To Cry” is inimitable with the subtle key-shifting introduction Mark Naftalin spices things up with his percussive licks on piano. Rush explodes with intensity on “Lonely Man”. His coarser urgent vocals match the group’s intensity, and the energy never abates. A slight departure is Rush’s agile cover of “Rainy Night In Georgia”. It is much different from Brooke Benton’s meditative r & b…a blues opus! There is ample originality to separate this recording from typical genre offerings.

Pure Pleasure Records has re-mastered Right Time, Wrong Place to 180-gram vinyl with sterling results. The stereo mix is very-balanced, with Rush’s vocals and guitar always centered. You will need to turn the volume up to appreciate the full effect of the horns, piano and organ. For blues enthusiasts, the liner notes by Dick Shurman provide assorted details about the obstacles in Rush’s career and the release of this album.

TrackList:
Side One: Tore Up; Right Place, Wrong Time; Easy Go; Three Times A Fool; Rainy Night In Georgia
Side Two: Natural Ball; I Wonder Why; Your Turn To Cry; Lonely Man; Take A Look Behind

Mother Love Bone - Mother Love Bone

Vinyl 2-LP Import 2013

When grunge took off in the early nineties, mainstream interest raised in a Seattle based band that had already ceased to exist but was very important in the formation process of Pearl Jam. Mother Love Bone was founded in 1988 by future Pearl Jam's guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament as an outlet for their Punk and Glam urges - citing Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin as their main influences. The band's promising career was primarily cut short by the tragic death of vocalist Andrew Wood in 1990, after having released just one EP called Shine. More material from studio recordings with Wood was released as the Apple album. Riding Pearl Jam's band wagon in 1992, Mother Love Bone was released as a combination of both releases - holding itself together as a seminal album with two bonus tracks: "Capricorn Sister" and "Lady Godiva Blues". First 1500 copies are pressed on heavy weight purple vinyl!

The album's style sees an expansion of the band's sound. They shifted to a more alternative rock-style, incorporating some psychedelic and southern rock influences. Musicology 101

Let's have a little fun, so here are some rock and roll nuggets so you can win at music trivia games and become a top musicologist!

Because so many special effects and studio musicans had been used record "This Diamond Ring," Gary Lewis And The Playboys could not re-create their sound when they appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show. In compromise, Lewis sang along with pre-recorded tracks as the Playboys pretended to play their instruments.

The largest group to ever have a hit record on the Billboard Top 40 was The Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The 375 voice ensemble reached #13 with "Battle Hymn Of The Republic" in 1959.

The real name of the theme song from the TV show Jeopardy is "Think Music," written by the show's creator, Merv Griffin, who has collected millions of dollars in royalties from the tune since the show went on the air in 1964.

Procol Harum's "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" has been recorded by over 900 other artists. Co-writer Keith Reid told the website www.songfacts.com that he came up with the title after overhearing someone at a party saying to a woman, "You've turned a whiter shade of pale."

Vocalist Peter Kraemer of Sopwith Camel had actually suggested the name "Sopwith Camel" for another newly formed group, but they passed on it and decided on Big Brother and The Holding Company.

Roy Orbison's million selling, #2 hit, "Only The Lonely" was rejected by both Elvis Presley and The Everly Brothers.

As a child, Brian Wilson's mother told him that dogs could pick up vibrations from people, so that a dog would bark at "bad vibrations." In 1966, Wilson turned that idea into The Beach Boys' number one hit "Good Vibrations".

The title of the Hollies 1969 hit "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" was first used as the title of a column in Kiwanis Magazine, published by Roe Fulkerson in 1924. The phrase later became associated with Father Edward J. Flanagan, the founder of Boys Town, who came across a drawing, created by Van B. Hooper, of a young boy carrying his brother in the Christmas 1941 edition of the Louis Allis Messenger. The caption read "He ain't heavy Mister — he's m' brother!" With permission from the magazine, the phrase became the motto of Boys Town.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is most often associated with the song "Sweet Home Alabama", but the band was actually formed in Jacksonville, Florida.

Roger Daltrey's stuttering delivery on The Who's recording of "My Generation" is said to have come about because he had not rehearsed the song prior to the recording and was unable to hear his own voice through the monitors. Daltrey tried to fit the lyrics to the music as best he could, and the band decided the stammering worked well enough to keep. The BBC initially refused to play "My Generation" because it did not want to offend people who stutter, but reversed its decision after the song soared to #2 on the UK charts.

Olympia is an album of transformation. Though it has only been two years since Austra's 2010 debut Feel It Break, it presents a quantum evolution in the Toronto-based band’s sound, structure and style.

After three years of non-stop international touring with the likes of the XX, Grimes and the Gossip, when it came time to record Olympia, Austra had evolved into a complex collaborative effort between its six members. “Previously, I would flesh out songs before I brought them to the band, but this time I left them bare and let the others fill them in” explains Katie Stelmanis, the principal songwriter/vocalist.

Olympia is also the first confessional record for Stelmanis as evidenced by the heartfelt lyrics of piano driven lead single"Home". "Home" expresses the anxieties of waiting up all night for a lover to return. “I was mad and upset and the song just wrote itself,” says the singer. The album touches on a range of sentiments that stem from a relationship ending, a relationship beginning, and friends' struggles with addiction and motivation. Despite the sometimes dark lyrics written in collaboration with band member Sari Lightman, Olympia is bubbly and buoyant— fundamentally a dance record, which Stelmanis says was the band's aim all along. “We are really into dense harmonies and big beautiful melodies, but I also love techno and dance music. I wanted to bring those elements together.”

Boards Of Canada - Tomorrow's Harvest (2 LP)

The idolized and enigmatic duo are back. After considerable speculation by their rabid fan base (not to mention the media following every step of the way), Boards of Canada have revealed that their new album Tomorrow s Harvest will be released on June 11 via their long time home, Warp Records. Musically, the album is somehow dark yet positive, with atmospheric dissonance and mind-bending melodic creations.

Mother Love Bone - Mother Love Bone

When grunge took off in the early nineties, mainstream interest raised in a Seattle based band that had already ceased to exist but was very important in the formation process of Pearl Jam. Mother Love Bone was founded in 1988 by future Pearl Jam's guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament as an outlet for their Punk and Glam urges – citing Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin as their main influences.

The band's promising career was primarily cut short by the tragic death of vocalist Andrew Wood in 1990, after having released just one EP called Shine. More material from studio recordings with Wood was released as the Apple album. Riding Pearl Jam's band wagon in 1992, Mother Love Bone was released as a combination of both releases – holding itself together as a seminal album with two bonus tracks: "Capricorn Sister" and "Lady Godiva Blues". First 1500 copies are pressed on heavy weight purple vinyl
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • Poster / lyric sheet
  • First 1500 copies numbered & limited on purple vinyl
  • 2 bonus tracks
  • First vinyl issue ever!

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF MAY 13, 2013

DEAR JERRY: I don't know if I typify music collectors or not, but the last time I bought an album, either LP or CD, was in 2004.

No, I didn't stop collecting my favorite tunes then. Quite the contrary, I have never acquired so much music as in the past 10 years — all via downloads.

How does my transition compare to the rest of the country?
—Chuck Davidson, Madison, Wis.

DEAR CHUCK: You could be the poster boy for a decade of changes in the way most people acquire their music.

Notice I didn't say "purchase" their music, though paying for the product accounts for a great deal of how it changes hands, but the numerous sources for peer-to-peer and otherwise gratis audio files cannot be overlooked.

As for some specifics, the only data reported to the Record Industry Association of America are of transactions resulting in revenue.

Here are those numbers:

In 2004, physical audio products — mostly digital media (CDs), but with some analog (vinyl and tapes) — accounted for roughly 98.5% of music sales. Paid digital downloads, then in its infancy, made up about 1.5%.

Now, physical media and digital downloads are essentially equal, both at approximately 40%. The remaining 20% accounts for miscellaneous income sources, such as from licensing fees and concert revenues.

Missing from the comparatively lonely process of downloading files, at least for me, is the many wonderful face-to-face connections I have enjoyed while record hunting in stores.

Fortunately, an international day now exists for shopping and socializing at authentic brick and mortar record retailers. Read on:

DEAR JERRY: Normally on Record Store Day (April 20) I am buzzing around the Bay area shops, in search of the RSD limited edition vinyl releases.

This year, however, I was in Paris, and was pleasantly surprised to find RSD being celebrated there, with lots of stores participating. They call it Les Pochettes du Disquaire Day (The Covers of Record Day), and they have many French pressings of American stars along with records by their own artists.

How many other countries are on the Record Store Day bandwagon?
—Christian Chappelle, Pittsburg, Calif.

DEAR CHRISTIAN: For Record Store Day, we now know of at least eight countries where it's a big deal. All have one-day exclusives and limited editions of 1,000 or fewer, plus in-store festivities including appearances by artists whose records are on sale.

This year, several hundred RSD albums came out here as well as in Great Britain.

Besides the U.S., France, and the UK, April 20th is also Record Store Day in Canada; Germany; Belgium; Australia, and the Netherlands.

DEAR JERRY: Of the eight current coaches and judges on The Voice and American Idol, how many are themselves Grammy Award winners?
—Dee Dee Fitzsimmons, Deming, N.M.

DEAR DEE DEE: Here are the current National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Grammy totals for each of the singing competition shows:

The Voice coaches (20):
Shakira (9); Usher (8); Adam Levine/Maroon 5 (3); Blake Shelton (0)
Though the Grammy is about the only major award not yet on Shelton's mantle, he has received four nominations from the NARAS.

American Idol judges (10):
Mariah Carey (5); Keith Urban (4); ); Randy Jackson (1); Nicki Minaj (0)
Jackson's award is based on his being co-producer of Gladys Knight's 2001 album, "At Last," though the NARAS does not credit him individually. If he has it, he has it. So we'll count it.
Nicki Minaj, the most entertaining Idol judge since Simon, has been nominated four times but is still waiting on her first Grammy win.

IZ ZAT SO? Keith Urban, who was born in New Zealand but raised in Australia, is among the few from Down Under to win a Grammy. Here are a few other famous Aussies to be so honored in America, and when they won:

Helen Reddy (1972)
Olivia Newton-John (1973, 1974, 1982). Olivia was born in England and raised in Australia.
Barry Gibb/Bee Gees (1977, 1978, 1980). Barry was born in England, but in 1958 the family moved to Australia, where the Bee Gees group was born
Rick Springfield (1981)
Men At Work (1982)
Kylie Minogue (2003)

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

ZZ TOP: THE COMPLETE STUDIO ALBUMS (1970-1990)

Warner Bros. Records Salutes The Texas Trio’s Musical Legacy With Boxed Set Featuring Original Mixes Of The Band’s First 10 Albums

The 10-Disc Collection Arrives June 11th

Back in 1969, Billy F Gibbons, Frank Beard and Dusty Hill joined together in Houston as ZZ TOP. The band that would unassumingly go on to be known as That Little Ol’ Band From Texas soon made rock history with a string of hugely successful record releases and tour dates. Over the next 20 years, the trio went on to critical and commercial acclaim, selling millions of albums and concert tickets around the world, while earning induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame and status as one of the only bands to have been awarded an RIAA Diamond (domestic sales of 10 million or more) album.

Warner Bros. Records explores the impressive scope of ZZ TOP’s musical legacy with a boxed set that includes the original mixes for the band’s first 10 albums. ZZ TOP: THE COMPLETE STUDIO
ALBUMS (1970-1990) will be available on June 11.

The set, including the albums initially released on the London label as well as the string of Warner Bros. Hits that followed, includes ZZ Tops’ First Album (1971), Rio Grande Mud (1972), Tres Hombres (1973), Fandango! (1975)*, Tejas (1976), Degüello (1979), El Loco (1981), Eliminator (1983), Afterburner (1985) and Recycler (1990). Each album is presented in a wallet sleeve that faithfully reproduces the original artwork, including the gatefold designs used for Tres Hombres and Tejas. The set presents, for the first time on CD, the original mixes for ZZ Tops’ First Album, Rio Grande Mud and Tejas that have long been on the wish lists of the band’s most fervent fans.

Today, Gibbons, Hill and Beard remain together performing and recording as, they often say, “the same three guys playing the same three chords.” The trio offered a statement regarding the forthcoming release of ZZ TOP: THE COMPLETE STUDIO ALBUMS (1970-1990): “We're gratified that the albums from the first 20 years of the band are going to be made available in this set. We're especially delighted to note the restoration of ZZ Top's First Album, Rio Grande Mud and Tejas has been incorporated; it's good to have been made whole again on a certain level.”

The collection spans 100 tracks that follow the band’s journey from the honky tonks of Texas to the stages of the world, starting with the earthy blues and electrifying boogie that defined their ’70s sound — “Just Got Paid,” “La Grange,” “Tush” and “Cheap Sunglasses.” THE COMPLETE STUDIO ALBUMS closes with the familiar synthesizers featured on the group’s biggest singles from the ’80s — “Legs” and “Sharp Dressed Man” from the Diamond-certified Eliminator, and the #1 hits “Sleeping Bag” and “Stages” from its multi-platinum follow-up Afterburner.

ZZ TOP will hit the road next month for concert dates in the U.S. and Europe, starting in Newkirk, Oklahoma and ending in Linz, Austria.

TRUCKER DIABLO's Songs of Iron Out Now on Ripple Music

Last week, their single "Drive" beat out the likes of ALICE IN CHAINS, VOLBEAT and QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE in Classic Rock Magazine's online Track of the Week poll. This week, they take over the rest of the world.

Northern Ireland melodic rockers TRUCKER DIABLO have released their sophomore effort,Songs of Iron, today via Ripple Music. A strong contender for Album of the Year, Songs of Ironis available on digital, vinyl and CD formats at the Ripple Music Webstore

Heavy melodies firmly planted on a foundation of steamroller rock n' roll aggression is the fuel behind the latest offering from Northern Ireland export, TRUCKER DIABLO. Songs of Ironpicks up where the breakthrough hit album, The Devil Rhythm left off, blasting listeners with the sonic fury of modern heavy rock mixed with a road worn southern swagger. After releasing two viral videos ("Drink Beer, Destroy," and "Voodoo") taking the stage at Hard Rock Hell, Download, and opening for The Foo Fighters amongst others, TRUCKER DIABLO surged to new heights of popularity in 2012. Now 2013 finds the band upon their international acclaim by cranking out another set of pile-driving melodic rockers. Songs of Iron, ups the ante on heaviness, crunching guitars and sing-along chorus, and is sure to please TRUCKER fans the world over, new and old.
