A new vinyl edition of the 1999 studio album by Porcupine Tree, which contains PT classics Even Less, Pure Narcotic, Tinto Brass, and Stop Swimming.

Stupid Dream has been unavailable on vinyl for many years, with the previous run (released in 2006) being a limited edition of 1000 copies globally.

This Kscope edition is pressed on double heavyweight (180g) vinyl.

Pre-order now for 19th August release date

KatatoniaDethroned And Uncrowned (double vinyl preorder)

Released on the Peaceville label in August 2012, Katatonia's home for the past 14 years, Dead End Kings was the band's most successful album to date and cemented Katatonia's position as masters of a unique kind of hard-edged atmospheric Rock.

In September 2013, the band unexpectedly return with Dethroned And Uncrowned, a radical reinterpretation of Dead End Kings and the band's first release on Kscope, Peaceville's sister label.

Dethroned And Uncrowned finds Katatonia exploring the more ambient and Progressive elements of Dead End Kings, while remaining truthful to the core of the album's songs.

"The album is foremost stripped down rather than 'pimped', it's also semi-acoustic and most things have been turned around, completely! The album title doesn't lie, the drums have been dethroned and distorted rhythm guitars have been uncrowned! We've placed the emphasis on the many layers of ambience, with the melodies staying central and the vocal harmonies representing the heart of the album." - Anders (Katatonia)

Pre-order now for 9th September release date.

Steven WilsonThe Raven That Refused To Sing (double vinyl)

Lyrically based on stories of the supernatural, the album was recorded and engineered in Los Angeles by legendary producer/engineer Alan Parsons.

This vinyl edition of the album is pressed on 180gm heavyweight vinyl and is packaged a gatefold sleeve with printed inners. It comes with a mp3 download code exclusive to Burning Shed orders.

Coffins’ Relapse debut ‘The Fleshland’ has all the subtlety of Godzilla’s destruction of Tokyo. After 3 full lengths and countless underground splits and eps, Japan’s Coffins have ascended from cult heroes to death/doom royalty, and ‘The Fleshland’ may just be their best effort yet. Absolutely punishing monolithic riffs combine with disgusting grooves to create one of the heaviest records to ever rise out of the east. Coffins are the best metal band coming out of Japan, if not the whole world.

Devil To Pay - Fate Is Your Muse (LP) Clear Splatter (Ltd. Ed.)

Devil To Pay's fourth full-length album, Fate Is Your Muse, is an introspective lyrical journey that careens from the metaphysical, to the absurd, to the pragmatic (and back again), all set to bone crushing heaviness wrapped in elaborate vocal melodies and elegant guitar phrases. Exploring topics such as reincarnation, the end of days, and the thin veil between reality and fantasy, the Indianapolis foursome create a rare musical experience; one that will have heavy rock fans returning for the primal emotional riffs, as well as the complex and heady lyrical content. Includes poster and download card. Clear splatter vinyl limited to run of 100 units and includes a signed poster and Tarot Card lyric insert.

Sonny & The Sunsets Antenna to the Afterworld CD/LP/Tape/MP3 Out Now

Like an antenna to the afterworld, Sonny & The Sunsets' new album probes the meaning of life after life via android love affairs, a meeting with a psychic, and an encounter with a deceased friend.

In a glowing review, AllMusic declares that Antenna to the Afterworld turns out to be the best kind of pop album: it sounds great and it's full of catchy songs, but it has just enough deeper meaning and emotional depth to keep it from blowing away in a light breeze.

what a great idea, and happy father's day to all the dads!

**** FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ****

TO CELEBRATE FATHER'S DAY - DRAFTHOUSE FILMS & DANGEROUS MINDS
WANT TO KNOW 'WAS YOUR DAD IN A BAND?'

New User-Generated Blog Dedicated To Unearthing Forgotten

Rock Launches As A Companion To Doc 'A Band Called Death'

AUSTIN, TX - June 14, 2013 - Drafthouse Films, the film distribution arm of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, and fringe pop culture site Dangerous Minds announced today their joint launch of interactive website My Dad Was In A Band (www.mydadwasinaband.com).

In anticipation of Father's Day and the June 28 theatrical release of documentary A Band Called Death, the site is dedicated to unearthing rare, forgotten paternal rock. People are encouraged to share their memories of their dad's experience in a rock band by uploading vintage photographs, video, audio files and personal testimonials. Fans can connect with the site via its official Twitter account at @dadbands and Facebook page facebook.com/mydadwasinaband.

Drafthouse Films' latest release A Band Called Death, which is available to watch on iTunes, Cable VOD platforms and on its official website (www.abandcalleddeath.com), tells of the unbelievable discovery of three black brothers' 1974 punk-before-punk demo tape that made its way out of the attic and found an audience several generations younger. In one of the film's most touching moments, the three sons of Death bassist Bobby Hackney deliver a moving on-camera interview about first discovering their dad's should-have-been-pioneering music, which eventually led them to form a touring Death tribute band called Rough Francis.

Inspired by the Hackney sons and Death's discovery story, Drafthouse Films creative director Evan Husney aimed to follow suit in a different way: "My dad was in a '60s garage rock band in Minneapolis called The High Spirits and after converting their lo-fi psychedelic track 'Groovin' With The Stone Fox' from tape to MP3, I had a sudden overwhelming realization about what other vintage music exists that we may never hear. With this site, we want to build the definitive archive of virtually unheard music and the world's children may be the only way to de-attic it. Who knows... maybe we'll find the next buried gem that someone will make a documentary about."

Submissions to the site thus far range from virtually unknown '70s Staten Island "prog rockers" Hot Ice, to unsigned LA hair metal group Cold Shot, to Phil Collins' early beginnings. "The best thing was when Evan sent me a beta link to the site and the very first band listed was a late '60s psychedelic group called "Flaming Youth" that Phil Collins had been in prior to joining Genesis," says Dangerous Minds creator Richard Metzger, "and the leader of this band, Brian Chatton, is the father of one of my oldest friends! I've seen him at her Thanksgiving dinners going back 21 years. And they were really, really good, too! I am very excited to be partnering with Drafthouse Films to introduce this site to the world."

About A Band Called Death
Punk before punk existed, three teenage brothers in the early '70s formed a band in their spare bedroom, began playing a few local gigs and even pressed a single in the hopes of getting signed. But this was the era of Motown and emerging disco. Record companies found Death's music- and band name-too intimidating, and the group were never given a fair shot, disbanding before they even completed one album. Equal parts electrifying rockumentary and epic family love story, A Band Called Death chronicles the incredible fairy-tale journey of what happened almost three decades later, when a dusty 1974 demo tape made its way out of the attic and found an audience several generations younger. Playing music impossibly ahead of its time, Death is now being credited as the first black punk band (hell...the first punk band!), and are finally receiving their long overdue recognition as true rock pioneers.

new releases from our friends at MusicOnVinyl

Stone Temple Pilots - Purple

Purple is the second studio album released by the Stone Temple Pilots.  The album, building on the foundations laid by the band's debut album Core(soon to be released by MOV) was a huge success for the band, debuting at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart and selling over six million copies worldwide.

The album's style sees an expansion of the band's sound.  They shifted to a more alternative rock-style, incorporating some psychedelic and southern rock influences. It produced a number of successful singles a.o. "Vasoline", "Interstate Love Song" and "Big Empty". Music On Vinyl is proud to add this legendary name to their catalogue.  Be quick because the first 1500 copies will be gone in the blink of an eye.

Beth Hart - Leave The Light On (Expanded Vinyl Edition)

Welcome to the sound and poetry of recovery and redemption.  On Beth Hart's third album, she has taken her already lean, rootsy approach to writing, scaled it back to what is essential in a song, then poured the very grain of her being into each performance.  Leave the Light On is filled with songs that take no prisoners, such as "Bottle of Jesus" or "Broken & Ugly",  with fierce melodies and burning guitar crunchiness.

This first ever exclusive vinyl edition includes no less than 5 bonus live tracks. No matter what happens this album will always sound necessary and is a vital example of classic rock.

Iggy Pop - Instinct

Does this man really need an introduction? Music  On Vinyl brings you another album by the legendary Mr. Iggy Pop! Instinct was originally released 25 years ago, on 20 June 1988. This is his heavy, hard-rocking album, featuring Sex Pistol Steve Jones on guitar, with production by Bill Laswell.

The album peaked at # 110 on the US Billboard Top 200 Chart.  The first single from the album "Cold Metal" charted at #37 on the rock charts. The album was ranked #69 on Kerrang!'s  "100 Greatest Heavy Metal Albums of All Time" list. Music On Vinyl proudly presents this 25th Anniversary Edition, with individually hand-numbered sleeves and lovingly pressed on 180 gram coloured vinyl.

A Flock Of Seagulls - A Flock Of Seagulls

A Flock of Seagulls first gained attention in the dance clubs with "Telecommunication," which is  included on this debut release.  The band were played heavily on MTV, quickly becoming known for their outrageous fashion and lead singer Mike Score's crazy haircut… (well, it was the 80s… and 2 of the members  were hairdressers!)

Their self-titled debut consists of hyperactive melodies, synthesizer noodlings, and electronic drumming. Legendary producer Phil Spector referred to this particular album as "phenomenal."

Music On Vinyl presents you this quintessential collection of new wave ear candy!  (180 gram audiophile vinyl)

Randy Newman -  Little Criminals

Like most of Newman's work, the album Little Criminals avoids traditional pop-music themes (there is not one love song on this album) in favour of musical story-telling. Some of the instrumental work and backing vocals on the album are performed by The Eagles.

The song "Baltimore" was covered by a.o. Nina Simone, Nils Lofgren and David Gray . The first song on the album "Short People" became a hit single in its own right. Little Criminals peaked at #9 on the US Billboard 200 chart, Newman's highest-charting album to date.   (180 gram audiophile vinyl)

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF JUNE 10, 2013

DEAR JERRY: For awhile in the early 1990s I lived in Moscow, and one of my favorite pastimes was checking out the Russian record shops.

Most of the albums then, regardless of who actually owned the rights, were made and controlled by Russia. This of course gave them complete control over what was available for their citizens to own.

Many of these LPs were by Russians, none of whom I knew, but here a few I found and bought by familiar American and British artists:

The Beatles ("Rubber Soul"); Creedence Clearwater Revival ("Traveling Band"); Deep Purple ("Deep Purple"); Elton John ("Honky Cat" and "Your Song"); Elvis Presley ("That's All Right"); Rolling Stones ("Sticky Fingers"); and Yes ("Time and a Word").

Other than numerals, such as times and release dates, nothing on the covers or labels is in English.

These must be rare, but is there any added value? Or are they about the same as the authentic versions?
—Vincent DeLong, Indianapolis

DEAR VINCENT: Rarely are Russian albums valued higher than the original U.S. and UK issues. Most are either in the same price range or lower.

This is because the NFP (Novelty Factor Premium), for being something most collectors don't have, is often offset by the FFD (Flummoxed Factor Discount), having something neither you nor anyone you know can decipher.

They are also not nearly as scarce as you might think. All that you mention are easily available online.

Other than "Rubber Soul," which is in the $25 to $30 range, any of the others you list can be had for $10 to $20.

DEAR JERRY: Don't know if anyone outside Fargo ever heard it, but there was a significant hit here in the early '60s that has been nagging at me for decades.

No one I've asked has ever come up with the artist and title, but this stuff seems right up your alley.

The memorable gimmick of the song is the inclusion of a bunch of recent hit songs with three-word titles, the last two being "Of Love."

One example they used is "Mountain of Love." What are the others?

Oh yeah, the singer sounded young and had a style reminiscent of Buddy Holly.
—Regina Cassidy, Fargo, N.D.

DEAR REGINA: You picked the right alley, and brought with you a delightful question we've never had before.

Here is another of those regional hits we often talk about, songs popular in scattered markets that just didn't chart nationally.

This singer is Jimmy Curtiss, and the "Of Love" song nagging you is "Love, Sweet Love," from 1961.

I always felt it should have been titled "Song of Love," making for a better connection to all the songs of love. It's not as though that title was overused. The last time anyone had a hit titled "Song of Love" was in 1922.

Billboard, in May '61, gave "Love, Sweet Love" their coveted four-star rating for its "strong sales potential." The rating was deserved, but the sales projection fell short.

In the order heard, and with the most appropriate artist for the period (not necessarily the original or best-known), they are:

"Train of Love" (Annette with the Afterbeats)
"Mountain of Love" (Harold Dorman)
"Treasure of Love" (Clyde McPhatter)
"Valley of Love" (Turbans Featuring Al Banks)
"Cradle of Love" (Johnny Preston)
"Ship of Love" (Nutmegs)
"Sea of Love" (Phil Phillips with the Twilights)
"Book of Love" (Monotones)
"Chains of Love" (Pat Boone)
"Story of Love" (Starlighters)
"Prisoner of Love" (Billy Eckstine)
"Glory of Love" (Roommates)

Using just the two years before the Jimmy Curtiss release, I found four more moderately successful "Of Love" records, should they have wanted another verse: "Beginning of Love" (Dallan LaRoc); "Lullabye of Love" (Frank Gari); "Secret of Love" (Elton Anderson with the Sid Lawrence Combo); and "Shadows of Love" (Lavern Baker).

For two weeks in June 1960, all four of these were in the Top 100: "Train of Love"; "Mountain of Love"; "Cradle of Love"; and "Shadows of Love."

It seems there was a summer "Of Love" long before the more famous one in 1967.

IZ ZAT SO? While researching Jimmy Curtiss, I noticed that, despite being a very common name, no one with the surname Curtis (or Curtiss) ever had a single or album on the national pop or rock (Top 100) charts — not a one in well over 100 years of recording history.

In the C&W singles field, Sonny Curtis, Mac Curtis, and Larry Curtis had hits, as did Chantal Curtis with an R&B entry. Sonny and Mac also charted with LPs.

Over-Nite Sensation (Pre-Order) by Frank Zappa

180 Gram Audiophile Virgin Vinyl LP - Sealed

Mastered from the Original Analog Master Tapes at Bernie Grundman Mastering by Chris Bellman

Love it or hate it, Over-Nite Sensation was a watershed album for Frank Zappa, the point where his post-'60s aesthetic was truly established; it became his second gold album, and most of these songs became staples of his live shows for years to come. Whereas the Flo and Eddie years were dominated by rambling, off-color comedy routines, Over-Nite Sensation tightened up the song structures and tucked sexual and social humor into melodic, technically accomplished heavy guitar rock with jazzy chord changes and funky rhythms; meanwhile, Zappa's growling new post-accident voice takes over the storytelling. While the music is some of Zappa's most accessible, the apparent callousness and/or stunning sexual explicitness of "Camarillo Brillo," "Dirty Love," and especially "Dinah-Moe Humm" leave him on shaky aesthetic ground.

Zappa often protested that the charges of misogyny leveled at such material missed out on the implicit satire of male stupidity, and also confirmed intellectuals' self-conscious reticence about indulging in dumb fun; however, the glee in his voice as he spins his adolescent fantasies can undermine his point. Indeed, that enjoyment, also evident in the silly wordplay, suggests that Zappa is throwing his juvenile crassness in the face of critical expectation, asserting his right to follow his muse even if it leads him into blatant stupidity (ironic or otherwise). One can read this motif into the absurd shaggy-dog story of a dental floss rancher in "Montana," the album's indisputable highlight, which features amazing, uncredited vocal backing from Tina Turner and the Ikettes. As with much of Zappa's best '70s and '80s material, Over-Nite Sensation could be perceived as ideologically problematic (if you haven't got the constitution for FZ's humor), but musically, it's terrific. -Steve Huey

MANFRED MANN ON SUNDAZED

Although many of the British Invasion's most prominent bands were comprised of rockers learning their craft as they went along, Manfred Mann was something different. The versatile British quintet, which took its collective name from that of its South African-born keyboardist, was comprised of four seasoned musicians with a solid grounding in jazz and blues, plus a charismatic frontman who was also one of England's finest blue-eyed soul singers. Together, the five members of Manfred Mann—or the Manfreds, as their fans called them—turned their diverse talents towards rock 'n' roll, and came up with a series of albums and singles that are among the catchiest and most enduring of the period. Now, Sundazed reaches back to present Manfred Mann's first five U.S. albums, out of print for decades and reissued for the first time in their original vinyl format, mastered from the original tapes and featuring complete cover art.

The Manfred Mann album

Manfred Mann's 1964 U.S. debut The Manfred Mann Album is widely regarded as one of the greatest albums of the British Invasion, and it's easy to hear why. With the catchy smash single "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" alongside powerful readings of classics by Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Ike and Tina Turner, it's a transcendent meeting of pop infectiousness and R&B grit that sets the stage for the musical achievements that the band would soon begin to rack up.

Goldfrapp To Release New LP This Fall

BRAND NEW ALBUM TALES OF US

AVAILABLE September 10th, 2013

Goldfrapp release their stunningly beautiful new album Tales Of Us through Mute on September 10th, 2013. Their sixth album, Tales Of Us is written and produced by band members Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory and was recorded at their studio in the English countryside.

A sumptuous body of work, Tales Of Us has been two years in the crafting and is their most narrative, cinematic and intimate recording to date. Nothing in their accomplished back catalogue has hinted at the new lyrical breadth that the band have introduced to Tales Of Us. All the songs except for one are named in the first person with a cast list of evocative character sketches, the contrary love affairs, the suspense, hallucinations, fairy tales and modern folklores documented and the traces of redemption they find in song take the poetry of Goldfrapp’s delicately considered music somewhere brand new.

A trailer for the album offers the first chance to get a glimpse of Tales Of Us and can be seen at www.goldfrapp.com. Collaborating with the uniquely cinematic narrative, filmmaker Lisa Gunning is creating a compelling and beautiful film to accompany the album, which will be shown in cinemas later this year.

Goldfrapp kick-start a summer of very special live performances with two shows at the Manchester International Festival on July 17th and 18th when they will be performing Tales Of Us live for the very first time, accompanied by the Royal Northern College of Music string orchestra. The band will then be performing at Somerset House on July 20th before going on to headline the Lovebox main stage on Sunday July 21st.

The summer shows are a precursor to a European headline tour in October and November. US tour dates to be announced shortly. For all ticket information please visit www.goldfrapp.com

Tales Of Uswill be available from September 10th on CD, vinyl, digital and a special limited edition boxset that will contain an exclusive disc of bonus material and a hardback book compiled by Goldfrapp, further details to follow.

(1971)/ Abkco Records – vinyl Rolling Stones – Hot Rocks 1964-1971 – London Records

For anyone who ponders why these guys are still out there at their ages…this will set them straight!

Published on June 5, 2013

The Rolling Stones – Hot Rocks 1964-1971 – London Records (1971)/ Abkco Records 018771966715 180-gram audiophile stereo vinyl, 84:56 ****1/2:

(Mick Jagger – harmonica vocals; Keith Richards – guitars, bass, vocals; Brian Jones – guitars, percussion vocals, Charlie Watts – drums; Bill Wyman – bass; Mick Taylor – guitars; featuring many guest musicians)

Many greatest hits albums are released without the approval of the artists. Usually, it is a collection of commercial singles that reinforces the success of the band’s catalogue. In 1971, The Rolling Stones’ Hot Rocks 1964-1971 hit the record stores. For the most part, this compilation reflects the label and management’s perspective (At the time The Stones were embroiled in a dispute with their manager). The good news is the songs are vintage Rolling Stones, and very good. The album (unauthorized of course) captures a good deal of the material associated with the original lineup.

The opening track is a bluesy rendition of “Time Is On My Side”. Originally recorded by Kai Winding in 1963, both New Orleans singer Irma Thomas and The Rolling Stones (to a greater degree) brought a popular accessibility to it. This is pure British ‘60s music, featuring the earlier band (with Ian Stewart on organ). As the album progresses, the evolution of the group is interesting to observe. The menacing eminence comes across on “Play With Fire”. A mixture of social commentary and ‘60s experimentation is highlighted by an unusual arrangement that includes harpsichord riffs (and this decade saw plenty of these) and trendy cultural pretense. Of course, the mega-hit “Satisfaction” is included. The catchy electric guitar chords (Richards, who would become synonymous with rock grooves) and propulsive rhythm mesh perfectly, and The Rolling Stones celebrated their first No. 1 U.S. single. The sexual anti-establishment imagery lends an air of rebellion (they certainly “freaked out” Ed Sulliivan). It stands the test of time. The band’s version of “As Tears Go By” (which was a huge hit by Marianne Faithful) has a string accompaniment, but no bite. But their other muscular 1965 single, “Get Off Of My Cloud” displays the tough attitude that has been a staple of their sound. Charlie Watts’ drum opening and accented chorus creates a jump/swing rock classic.

This is a notable guitar-based collection. “Mother’s Little Helper” has Richards on twelve-string and electric, while Brian Jones rips on a Vox mando-guitar. Both Richard and Jones play hard electric grooves on “19th Nervous Breakdown”.  Jones was a versatile musician and invigorates “Paint It Black” with his sitar work. At the core of the music is Jagger’s go-for-broke singing. He can handle blues, pop r & b, even a country twang. There are unique instrumental touches on songs like the ill-fated (from Altamont) “Under My Thumb”. Wyman’s fuzz bass and Jones’ marimba sound fresh and colorful. Rounding out this era are two tracks that successfully maneuvered The Stones out of the pop mainstream. “Let’s Spend The Night Together” was raucous and alarmed the parents of nearly every teenager. But, “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” is a song for the ages. Richards utilizes a variety of open tuning and slack key adjustments that frame the evocative, at times disturbing, lyrics. It is hypnotic.

The next group of songs represents the first significant transitional phase, and possibly the greatest. Recorded between 1967- and 1974, most of the selections feature Mick Taylor on guitars. Two seminal cuts, “Sympathy For The Devil” and “Gimme Shelter” are preeminent in rock annals. Combining high voltage rock hooks and rambunctious lyrics, this pair of musical cautionary tales symbolizes the dysfunctional end of the tumultuous decade.  The Rolling Stones were a phenomenal live act. A live take of “Midnight Rambler” (with Taylor on lead and slide guitar) is energetic and reflects the group’s performance reputation. “Brown Sugar” (from Sticky Fingers) was the first single released on Rolling Stones Records, but appears here because of the previous licensing contract with their manager. Finally “Wild Horses”, the last country blues opus to chart ends this on a mellower note.

Even though the selection is predictable, the acoustics shimmer on audiophile vinyl. Low-end mixing shines a light (no pun intended) on overlooked members Wyman and Watts. The guitars are crisp, but still maintain that trademark, relaxed band dynamic. For any fans that have unplayable vinyl Stones music, this is a quick fix. And for anyone who ponders why these guys are still out there at their ages…Hot Rocks 1964-1974 will set them straight!

TrackList:

Side One: Time Is On My Side; Heart Of Stone; Play With Fire; (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction; As Tears Go By; Get Off Of My Cloud
