Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF JUNE 24, 2013

DEAR JERRY: Many years ago you compiled a list of mail-related songs for someone working for the postal service. I have a similar request.

I want to create a unique CD of motorcycle songs as a gift for my husband, and would be grateful for a list of such songs. Then I could pick ones I think he would like. He even has a CD player on his bike.

Can you help with this?
—Martina Kosmescher, Jupiter, Fla.

DEAR MARTINA: Help just rode in on two wheels.

Not knowing the type of music he prefers, I selected some tunes with "motorcycle" in the title, and ones from several genres and eras. All are easily available online for you to audition and download.

When more than one artist is shown with the same title, they are completely different songs.

Alphabetical by title, with the artist whose recording I verified, they are:

"Bad Motorcycle" (Storey Sisters)
"Black Denim Trousers and Motorcycle Boots" (Cheers)
"Chrome Plated Motorcycle Man" (Cyril May)
"Dream Motorcycle" (Marty Balin)
"Girl on a Motorcycle" (Basement Tape)
"Girl on a Motorcycle" (Crokodile Tears)
"Girl on a Motorcycle" (Lola Dutronic)
"Girl on a Motorcycle" (Mark Lucas and the Dead Setters)
"Motorcycle" (Iggy Pop)
"Motorcycle" (Love & Rockets)
"Motorcycle" (Paul Simon as Tico and the Triumphs)
"Motorcycle" (Vinyltones)
"Motorcycle Alligators" (Jimmy Hasser)
"Motorcycle Baby" (Rocket 3)
"Motorcycle Baby" (Rockin' Scoundrels)
"Motorcycle Blues" (Brownie McGhee & Sonny Terry)
"Motorcycle Blues" (David James Vasquez)
"Motorcycle Blues" (Jesse Colin Young)
"Motorcycle Boy" (Gutterball)
"Motorcycle Day" (Frank Tribes)
"Motorcycle Daydream" (Bedroom Eyes)
"Motorcycle Dreamer" (Menudo)
"Motorcycle Drive By" (Third Eye Blind)
"Motorcycle Driver" (Joe Satriani)
"Motorcycle Girl" (Giants)
"Motorcycle Girl" (Cruzados)
"Motorcycle Irene" (Moby Grape)
"Motorcycle Journey" (Big Room)
"Motorcycle Loretta" (Crown of Thorns)
"Motorcycle Mama" (Allan Benoit)
"Motorcycle Mama" (Natchez)
"Motorcycle Mama" (Neil Young & Nicolette Larson)
"Motorcycle Mama" (Pocket)
"Motorcycle Mama" (Sailcat)
"Motorcycle Man" (Hot Sugar)
"Motorcycle Man" (Riptones)
"Motorcycle Man" (Townsend & Tucker)
"Motorcycle Michael" (Jo Ann Campbell)
"Motorcycle Millie" (William Garrett)
"Motorcycle Riding D.J." (James Maddox)
"Motorcycle Rose" (Heart Shapre')
"Motorcycle Song" (Arlo Guthrie)
"Motorcycle Song" (Billy Joel)
"Motorcycle Song" (Loaded Dice)
"Motorcycle Song" (Ron Overcash and Nu Blooz Band)
"Motorcycle Ways" (Arizona)
"Motorcycles" (Hank Vegas)
"Motorcycles and Music" (Red Herring and South Boston Popps Orchestra)
"My Motorcycle" (Larry Siegel)
"Poppity Pop Goes the Motorcycle" (Royal Crown Revue)
"Really Like My Motorcycle" (Wolf and Gypsy Band)
"Red Motorcycle and a Blue Tattoo" (Courtney Hogan)
"She's a Bad Motorcycle" (Surf Sluts)
"Silver Motorcycle" (Union)

There should be enough here to put together something for your Easy Rider.

DEAR JERRY: Some people ask you about songs because they remind them of an old flame or good friend.

My connection with a song is based on a very different memory, one not nearly as romantic or pleasant.

Due to an unfortunate series of events in the summer of 1968, I spent some time in the East Lansing Police Jail.

There I met a homeless guy who actually preferred jail to life on the streets, and I remember him referring to incarceration as providing "three squares and a cot."

Coincidentally, there was a hit song at the time about three squares.

I have not heard it since that summer, but sure would enjoy hearing it again. What was it?
—Steven Mendez, Royal Oak, Mich.

DEAR STEVEN: While you were a guest of Michigan's capital city, and the three squares and a cot at the E.L.P.J., radio WJIM (AM 1240) was spinning "Three Squares," by Jimmy Gilmer (Atco 6583).

It was in fact exactly 45 years ago this month when the WJIM Sound Power Survey listed "Three Squares" in Lansing's Top 10. Jimmy Gilmer had several hits in the '60s with the Fireballs, including the million-selling No. 1 hit, "Sugar Shack." But he recorded "Three Squares" solo, though he was still with the Fireballs. As a group, they had three chart hits in 1968, including the Top 10 entry, "Bottle of Wine."

Even so, "Three Squares" must have been a disappointment. Packed with potential, it deserved more than just regional hit status in a small market.

Unfortunately, what happened in Lansing stayed in Lansing. Not enough other stations jumped on it and it simply fizzled nationally.

At first, one might think the tune is about three not-so-hip people. That is not the case, as indicated by the complete title: "Three Squares (And a Place to Lay Your Head)."

It really is about three meals daily, plus a cot (of sorts), but does not involve being taken into custody.

Jimmy's song is an attempt to reason with his love interest. She apparently is involved with someone for no reasons other than food and shelter.

The first verse adequately summarizes the story:

"The memories of a tenement room
The desperate hours of perpetual gloom
It's all built up inside you, baby I know
That's why you think there's no place else you can go
Don't let him buy you, girl
No don't destroy your world for
Three squares and a place to lay your head
Three squares and a soft feather bed
Three squares can't be all you're livin' for
When love is so much more"

IZ ZAT SO? Bob Montgomery, a close friend and one-time singing partner of Buddy Holly's, wrote "Three Squares (And a Place to Lay Your Head)."

Montgomery is credited with over 100 songs, including "Love's Made a Fool of You"; "Heartbeat"; and "Wishing," all first recorded by Holly, then by others.

Montgomery also wrote "Misty Blue" (Dorothy Moore, Eddy Arnold, others) and "Back in Baby's Arms" (Patsy Cline, Emmylou Harris, Sissy Spacek, others).

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

Cat Stevens - Majikat (180+ Virgin Vinyl)

All his classic songs are here.

A must for Cat Stevens fans and for anyone interested in the great pop musicians of the 70's.

In 1976, "Majikat" became Cat Stevens' final tour.  The release by Audio Fidelity of this classic album on our "Live on Vinyl" series is a great reminder of just how successful, talented, innovative and influential Cat Stevens is.  The album features 20 of his biggest hits, his best known and most loved creations

This 2-LP set is definitely an artist at the peak of his career.  “Majikat” is a testament to a classic artist whose music endures and influences even today.  Full of a mature yearning for spiritual truth and a deep compassion for humanity, as well as a strong sense of humor, all wrapped up in great melodies. This is the first time the music from this tour has ever been available on vinyl.

Cheap Trick - In Color (180+ Virgin Vinyl)

1977's, In Color is Cheap Trick's second album release and the songs and music are as impressive as the band's debut. Melodic, gritty, and just a rockin' good time, the record is one of rock's best ever sets of lip-smacking, hip-shaking, guitar-driven, harmony-coated super-songs.

The album contains the studio version of "I Want You To Want Me" that would go on to become one of their biggest hits a few years later when it was released on the "At Budakon" album, along with four other tracks from this record  ("Hello There," "Big Eyes," "Clock Strikes Ten" and "Come On, Come On") and these original versions have all the energy of that classic live set.

Producer Tom Werman understood the band's pop dynamic and brought out the best in the individual members - this is pop/rock written and performed by young adults and it's as close to perfection as pop-metal/power-pop gets. Aside from the craftsmanship, the album has genuine heart and a fun attitude. Cheap Trick is a band that never took itself too seriously as famously illustrated on the gatefold LP jacket with pretty-boys, singer Robin Zander and bassist Tom Petersson, looking cool in full color astride motorcycles on the front cover while the geek-squad, drummer Bun E. Carlos and guitarist Rick Nielsen, rest on motor bikes, in black and white and upside-down, on the back.

Mastered by Kevin Gray.

Tracklist:

4   I Want You To Want Me
5   You're All Talk

801  - 801 Live (double vinyl preorder)

801 Live is regarded as one of the truly great 1970s live releases.

A supergroup comprising Phil Manzanera, Brian Eno, Francis Monkman (Sky, Curved Air), Bill MacCormick (Matching Mole), Lloyd Watson and drummer's drummer Simon Phillips, 801 produced an adventurous Art Rock music, mainly drawing on the catalogues of Manzanera, Eno and Quiet Sun.

The album includes the band's celebrated epic rendition of Tomorrow Never Knows.

This is the Vinyl 180 audiophile double vinyl version of the album, which has been remastered and pressed on 180gm vinyl with heavyweight gatefold sleeve and comes with newly designed inner bags and a different track order from previous editions.

Pre-order for July 8th shipping.

Quiet Sun - Mainstream (double vinyl preorder)

Quiet Sun was Phil Manzanera's pre-Roxy Music project, alongside Bill MacCormick (Matching Mole / Random Hold), Charles Hayward (This Heat) and Dave Jarrett.

A stunning, Psychedelically inclined Progressive Jazz Rock album, Mainstream was recorded 4 years after the band's break-up during the night-shift sessions for Manzanera's debut solo album, Diamond Head.

Occasionally echoing the styles of early Soft Machine, Pink Floyd and King Crimson, and hinting at the ambition of the 801 project to come, Mainstream is the only remaining legacy of this great 'lost' British band.

This is the Vinyl 180 audiophile double vinyl version of the album, which has been remastered and pressed on 180gm vinyl with heavyweight gatefold sleeve and comes with newly designed inner bags and the extra tracks included on the deluxe cd edition.

Yes  - Tormato (vinyl)

A superb replica version of 1978's Tormato, including the vinyl insert.

Part of Friday Music's limited edition 'Yes 180gm Audiophile Vinyl Series', Tormato is one of Yes's most underrated releases.

Containing the ethereal ballads Madrigal and Onward, the endearingly daffy Circus Of Heaven and the Art Rock powerhouse, On The Silent Wings Of Freedom.

N.B. We have a very limited quantity. Buy HERE

King Crimson - Red (200 gram vinyl with bonus MP3 codes preorder)

Red is the fourth in a series of audiophile King Crimson vinyl reissues.
Newly cut from masters approved by Robert Fripp, this super-heavyweight 200gm vinyl re-issue is housed in a reprint of the original sleeve and contains bonus MP3 codes giving access to a download of a transfer of an original 1974 pressing (Robert Fripp's personal file copy).

One of the most powerful and influential albums in the band's remarkable career.

Massive Vinyl Record Collection Up On eBay

Up on ebay right now are "69,592+ Dance Music Vinyl Records," along with "House / Trance / Techno / Drum & Bass" records with an opening bid of $10,000 (so far no takers)  The records are located near San Francisco, CA  (looks like a storage locker, they don't say if it was climate controlled).  The buyer will be responsible for paying to ship the records to their location. (which would be sizeable to anywhere in the US, probably ruling out an east coast buyer) The collection is estimated to weigh around 35,000 to 40,000 LBS.

new releases from our friends at MusicOnVinyl

Dream Theater - Images And Words

Dream Theater's first album with new vocalist James LaBrie is an excellent mix of various progressive metal styles. Berklee music school alumni John Petrucci on the six strings, bassist John Myung and drummer Mike Portnoy show impressive ability on their instruments. Standout tracks include the complex "Metropolis, Pt. 1", "Pull Me Under" (also released as a single and video, an MTV favourite in 1992), "Take the Time" and the 11-minute "Learning to Live." Images And Words proves that Dream Theater's musicianship and songwriting are above the norm, and they proved to hold up this high standard for years to come.

Blind Faith - Blind Faith -Deluxe

Blind Faith were arguably one of the biggest and short lived super-groups of the late sixties, featuring former Cream members Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker and Traffic / Spencer Davis Group's organist Steve Winwood.  The anticipation for their collaboration after the demise of their previous bands was massive – their first and only album Blind Faith was hugely successful. It peaked at number #1 on the Billboard Top 200 in 1969. With sold out shows in Europe and the US, the band made an impression few newborn groups have ever achieved.

The Music On Vinyl reissue boasts the original LP with its original artwork (that raised more than a few eyebrows across the globe...and not shown here) with the addition of a second LP. The bonus disc includes 5 bonus tracks that have never seen the light of day on vinyl previously!
  • 180 gram audiophile vinyl
  • 5 bonus tracks
  • 8 page booklet with extensive liner notes

On True Widow’s highly anticipated third album ‘Circumambulation’, the Dallas heavy ‘stonegaze’ trio hone in on their trademark syrupy simplicity with absolute perfection.  Equal parts drone, post-rock and shoegaze, ‘Circumambaulation’ is the band’s most, controlled, concise and realized effort yet.  Simultaneously True Widow’s darkest and poppiest record, ‘Circumambaulation’ is a moody triumph of a record perfect for both super late nights, and early Sunday mornings.  Rarely does a band capture the vibe of dreary haze together with sticky male/female harmonies so infectiously.  True Widow’s
‘Circumambulation’ is an easy top contender for record of the summer, if not all of 2013.

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF JUNE 17, 2013

DEAR JERRY: The column about Lefty Frizzell prompted a friend to point out how rare is was for a true country song in the vinyl era to cross over and top the pop-rock charts.

His point being that nearly all of the ones that did get that high were more pop sounding (e.g., Glen Campbell; Bobbie Gentry; Charlie Rich; etc.) than traditional country or western.

By the way, we really enjoyed the interview you did recently on the radio. It was carried locally by WLIP (Kenosha, Wis.)
—Alan Baxter, Waukegan, Ill.

DEAR ALAN: Thank you for listening! I enjoyed spending 30 minutes on WLIP ("Frank Carmichael's Happenings Q&A"), with you and other music lovers in Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois.

Now let's get down to business.

My list of genuine C&W crossovers to reach No. 1 in the pop field begins with Marty Robbins.

Starting with "A White Sport Coat (And a Pink Carnation)" (1957), some of his music — while still great — was pop and teen oriented. However, his No. 1 hit, "El Paso" (1959-'60), is an authentic western classic, and as such it clearly qualifies. This tune epitomizes the 'W' in C&W.

Next comes Johnny Horton, whose "Battle of New Orleans" (1959) is much more traditional than his subsequent (1960) movie themes, "Sink the Bismarck" (1960) and "North to Alaska."

Can't overlook "Big Bad John," by Jimmy Dean (1962). When Jimmy speaks or sings, it's pure country.

Then there is C.W. McCall's "Convoy" (1976). It may be a CB novelty, but it's also a country novelty. Copy that, good buddy.

My fifth and final pick is "Harper Valley P.T.A.," from the pen of Tom T. Hall and the voice of Jeannie C. Riley.

This small-town soap opera set to music held the No. 1 pop spot for a week, wedged between the Rascals ("People Got to Be Free") and the Beatles ("Hey Jude"). Talk about a stray in the herd.

Not widely known is that "Harper Valley P.T.A." is one of just two vinyl era songs by a solo female to top both the pop and country charts. Riley accomplished this in Sept. 1968.

The other is Dolly Parton's "9 to 5," in late January and early February, 1981.

DEAR JERRY: I was born and raised on the west side of Philadelphia, so you can imagine my shock when, in the mid-'60s, the local stations played a song that began with "the south side of Philly," etc.

If that isn't the title, then it could be "the west side of Philly." Both areas are mentioned.

I think at one point, someone on the street starts shooting at them.

The singing style is similar to Simon and Garfunkel's, but if it were them I think I would remember it.

More likely it is by someone I never heard of before or after, but who, and what?
—Arthur B. Forbes, Bala Cynwyd, Pa.

DEAR ARTHUR: It is by someone you had not heard before, Gene and Tommy, but you probably know them because of their later recordings.

Your recollection of the song's Philadelphia geography is accurate, but let me fill in the gaps in that first verse:

"The south side of Philly is like a constant drizzly mornin'
While the west side of Philly, no one should be born in
But when you are, baby you are
And 'cause you got no father and mother
You're tight with your soul brother
Like Richard and me yeah, like Richard and me"

Right there you have the title, "Richard and Me" (ABC 10981), an October 1967 release.

Perhaps inspired by Simon and Garfunkel's folk-rock style, and ubiquitous urban unrest, Eugene Pistilli and Tommy West wrote "Richard and Me." It was their first and last recording as Gene and Tommy.

Before the end of the year the duo became a trio, with the addition of Terry Cashman. In early 1968, Cashman, Pistilli and West completed their first LP, "Bound to Happen" (ABC 629) and single, "But for Love" (ABC 11047).

What seemed bound to happen didn't. In fact, none of the 1968 ABC records happened for the boys, at least not on the national level. "Richard and Me"sold well in Philly, naturally, but it also reached No. 3 on KSTN, on the opposite coast, in Stockton, Calif.

In early '69, they left ABC and joined Capitol. Their second album, and first for Capitol, is the eponymous "Cashman, Pistilli and West" (Capitol ST-211). Among the 11 tracks is a re-recorded version of "Richard and Me."

Meaning that anyone wanting the 1967 Gene and Tommy tune will still need to find the original ABC single.

IZ ZAT SO? Individually and collectively, Terry Cashman, Eugene Pistilli, and Tommy West recorded using different combinations of their names. In addition to those variations, and Gene and Tommy, they also recorded as the Buchanan Brothers (1969) and Morning Mist (1971).

Ironically, their biggest hit single is the first of six credited to the Buchanan Brothers, "Medicine Man" (Event 3302). It spent 13 weeks on the Cash Box Top 100, and peaked at No. 21.

LOCRIAN: New Album Streaming via Spin.com

East Coast Tour June 27-30

Return To Annihilation coming June 25th via Relapse

Esoteric, experimental artisan’s Locrian are currently streaming their entire forthcoming full-length Return To Annihilation via Spin.com at this location.  Spin describes the album as a "an eclectic float down murky, noxious, sludgy waters" and compares the group to everyone from Boards of Canada to Sunn0))) to Neurosis.

Return To Annihilation was recorded by Greg Norman (Pelican, Russian, Circles, Serena Maneesh) at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio Studios in Chicago, IL and mastered by Jason Ward at Chicago Mastering Service.  The album will be released as CD, 2xLP, and digital formats on June 25th in North America, June 21st in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Benelux, and Finland, and June 24th in the UK and rest of the world.

A two-part concept album inspired by the band’s love for prog-rock progenitors Genesis, Yes & King Crimson, Return To Annihilation is easily the group’s most ambitious recordings to date, dubbed by Pitchfork as both "excellent" and "risky", by Stereogum as "a corona of dream-pop and visceral shoegaze" and Outburn Magazine as "an excellent effort from one of the world's most creative, interesting, and uncompromising bands."

Physical CD and 2xLP pre-orders are available via Relapse HERE
