Holly Golightly - Truly She Is None Other (Expanded Version) - CD/LP/Download

10 year anniversary re-issue of Holly's greatest album with 2 BONUS UNRELEASED tracks!

Collector's edition on RED vinyl and digipak CD

It's been out of stock for a while so we've decided to make this re-issue a little bit special. Often cited as perhaps her best solo album Truly She Is None Other was recorded in 2002/3 at Toe-Rag Studios by Liam Watson and features the song 'Tell Me Now So I Know' which was picked for the main title theme for Jim Jarmush's 'Broken Flowers' movie.

Among the nine Holly originals the album features two Ray Davies songs ('Time Will Tell' & 'Tell Me Now So I Know'), along with 'There's An End', (penned by her friend Craig Fox from The Greenhornes.) There's also a fine version of Jessie Mae Robinson's 'Black Night', a song most famously covered by Muddy Waters.

Backed by the cream of Toe-Rag's in house musicians, this is Holly Golightly at her finest.
With sleeve notes by none other than Jack White III.

King Crimson - Larks Tongues In Aspic (vinyl preorder)

Larks' Tongues In Aspic is the fifth in a series of audiophile King Crimson vinyl reissues.

Newly cut from masters approved by Robert Fripp, this super-heavyweight 200gm vinyl re-issue is housed in a reprint of the original sleeve and contains bonus MP3 codes giving access to a download of a transfer of an original 1973 pressing.

With its raw tone, inspired improvisations and hard hitting odd-metered rhythms, the album marked a radical departure for this most forward thinking of groups and was the first to include Bill Bruford and John Wetton as band members.

Pre-order for 23rd September release.

THE HUSSY 'Pagan Hiss' Available on Vinyl

Just a year after Weed Seizure was released, THE HUSSY returns with Pagan Hiss: 14 tracks of pungent and poignant psych-punk/trash-art that twists the limits of both punk and pop music. Over the 14 tracks, The Hussy seamlessly crafts a smart and catchy record that’s full of dark depth, torrid twists and sparkling surprises you’ll stumble upon after each repeated listen. As with Weed Seizure and Cement Tomb Mind Control, Pagan Hiss was recorded by BOBBY HUSSY at the band’s practice space in Madison, Wisconsin (with additional tracking done at Bobby Hussy’s home). Bobby Hussy’s engineering ensures the new record stays true to The Hussy’s vision of a crafted and produced recording that still has firm lo-fi roots. Guest appearances by JORDON DAVIS (of THE MYSTERY GIRLS fame) on organ, DEAD LUKE (Moon Glyph and Sacred Bones recording artist, ex-PINK REASON) on guitar and recorder and JUSTIN ATEN on violin help fill out the sound on a few of the tracks. Never a band to stagnate, the Hussy has already released TWO new 7" singles (their 6th and 7th respectively) and a brand new European Tour 10" EP alongside Pagan Hiss. Each of the four 2013 releases contain completely exclusive material!

The Hussy just returned home from a monthlong nine country European Tour and is embarking on a large scale two-part US Tour for the majority of the summer.

Last Shop Standing

Last Shop Standing inspired by the book of the same name by Graham Jones takes you behind the counter to discover why nearly 2000 record shops have already disappeared across the UK. Vinyl Record Day Thomas Edison Picture Disc Contest

Win A Collectible Thomas Edison Picture Disc
To celebrate Vinyl Record Day, Founder Gary Freiberg, in collaboration with the CVR blog, has donated  a great collectible to give away to a lucky blog reader, a limited edition, framed for wall display, Picture Disc of phonograph inventor Thomas Edison!

This disc has Edison speaking the first words he recorded in 1877 ("Mary Had A Little Lamb" but you probably already know that) with assorted early recordings including P.T. Barnum (1890), Sophie Tucker (1908), and Theodore Roosevelt (1919).

Special collectors limited edition issued to celebrate Edison's 150th birthday last year. (Continental US only shipping included - Value is $65.00)

To enter, simply send an email to rbenson30@wi.rr.com with the words "Vinyl Record Day Edison Picture Disc Contest" in the subject line and you are automatically entered.  A random drawing will be held at 5pm CST on August 12th, which is of course Vinyl Record Day!  Limit one email entry per person.

Entrants can also go to the RockArtPictureShow Facebook page  and ++Like++ us, it would be appreciated, as we try and join the social media world (and tell all your friends about it as well!)

Additionally, Vinyl Record Day is to be celebrated Saturday, August 17th, so make plans to have some friends and family over and have a platter party!

Vinyl Record Day is the First Nonprofit organization dedicated to:
  • The Preservation of the Cultural Influence, the Recordings and the Cover Art of the Vinyl Record
  • Celebrating our Fondest Music with Friends and Family
  • Promoting the Future of Vinyl
  • Nationally Establish August 12th, the date Edison invented the phonograph in 1877, as Vinyl Record Day
here is an interview i did a couple of years ago with Gary

Celebrate Vinyl Record Day

When Thomas Edison invented the phonograph on August 12, 1877, little did he know just how much influence his “Talking Machine” would have, not only in the music industry, but in pop culture as well. Records are a part of the music of the ages and it is up to us as individuals and retailers, not only to enjoy our favorite recordings, but to preserve them as well; thus Vinyl Record Day was born.

Vinyl Record Day (www.VinylRecordDay.org) is celebrated on August 12th (or the first Saturday following the 12th) and was conceived and brought to the forefront by vinyl enthusiast and vinyl record historian Gary Freiberg. I spoke with Gary about the meaning of Vinyl Record Day and how we can help as individuals and what retailers can do to help preserve this timeless medium and international treasure.

“Vinyl Record Day is about celebrating vinyl records and the public should take notice of this special day. Invite friends and family over for a barbeque, maybe form a block party and play records, think records and talk about records and what they mean to each of us individually and culturally,” explained Gary.

Gary went into further detail, "Whatever the feel good aspects of Vinyl Record Day are, a retailer will ask how will this help my bottom line? Vinyl Record Day can get free publicity, it puts a good face on a business within their community and is a reason to have something special at the location: a parking lot sale, entertainment, store specials are great examples. I would hope the industry would become more involved with Vinyl Record Day so that, not only are the goals of Vinyl Record Day spread, but that people trying to make all or part of their living with vinyl could be part of an industry and not scattered individuals. We need to have a cohesive national impact as the milk industry did with their "Got Milk" campaign. I truly believe that Internet and traditional brick store owners could benefit financially, and in the case of brick store owners, in their communities by being part of Vinyl Record Day. Another important goal of Vinyl Record Day is to preserve the cultural influences, the recordings and the cover art. We also hope to increase awareness that economics prevents companies from transferring everything on to compact discs.”

A very dynamic and immensely important point Gary talked about is that only 5% of our musical history has been transferred to CD, so it is our responsibility to preserve this medium. Maybe your grandfather, sibling or cousin released a record and, although it may have not made the “top ten,” it is our music and some of these wonderful recordings cannot be found anywhere else. For instance, I own a vinyl copy of a Spiro Agnew speech and one of our most revered presidents John F. Kennedy has released several recordings, as have other influential and historical figures.

Additionally, Vinyl Record Day is a nonprofit organization that aims to educate the public and encourage all of us to preserve these international audio treasures. It is also a marketing opportunity for any vinyl record retailer.

“Vinyl Record Day is focused on educating the public, this timeless medium is in our hands, don’t leave the preservation of vinyl to fate. Vinyl records represent historical audio documents and just as we preserve historical literature, we are the custodians of this audio history. Vinyl Record Day is more than one day a year set aside for celebration, it is also for the industry itself,” acknowledged Gary."

We also discussed past celebrations, from the inaugural Vinyl Record Day in San Luis County, California and the international support and attention that Vinyl Record Day receives as well.

“Vinyl Record Day hopes to continue to educate the public on why and how to care for a record collection because these collections are not only a part of who we are individually, but to assure that future generations will not lose a vital link in recorded history,” related Gary.

“We recently got accepted and are under consideration by the USPS for a stamp series that may feature classic album cover art and the history of records. Now we are organizing public support for the stamp series. We encourage, no plead, for the public to do a snail mail letter letting the Citizen's Stamp Advisory Committee know you support the stamp series,” said Gary.

As an avid vinyl record collector, I truly enjoyed my conversation with Gary, who is very passionate about the cause. Vinyl Record Day is a nonprofit organization that needs the help of all of us, consumers, collectors, musicians, retailers as well as the record companies. So, as you celebrate Vinyl Record Day this August, think about the history, preservation of the format and enjoyment you receive when listening to your favorite records.

For more information and how you can help as an individual, please visit the website, www.VinylRecordDay.org and let Gary know that you endorse all of his efforts.

The Vinyl Record Day proposal for a series of first class stamps has been accepted by the U.S. Postal System! Current status is "Under Consideration" which is a notable big step toward issuance according to representatives of the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee.

Stone Temple Pilots - Core

The debut album of Stone Temple Pilots (1992) built a heavy foundation for the subsequent career of this post-grunge Rock band. The hits "Creep" and "Plush" made heavy rotations on MTV, and pulled attention toward the album-making qualities of these San Diego based soon-to-be superstars.  Instead of purely focusing on grunge's Punk esthetic, Stone Temple Pilots excelled with coherent, quality songwriting. Guitarist Dean DeLeo's inventive and distinctive guitar playing made him a true guitar hero to many junior axe slingers of the day. Scott Weiland's adventurous personality (ultimately resulting in years of forced rehab programs) shows in his strong and melodic Rock growl.

Core ultimately reached third place on the Billboard 200, and "Plush" won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance. The original LP contained all 12 songs on 2 sides; for best audio we've decided to give Core a double LP treatment, the 4th side containing a beautiful etch of the album's cover art.

Elvis Presley - Elvis At Stax

Riding high on the success of Aloha From Hawaii [MOVLP739], Elvis did something remarkable. He decided that his next recording project would be on his home turf – Memphis, TN. The most desirable studio in town was the red-hot STAX – the launching pad of such greats as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave and Isaac Hayes.

Elvis assembled the very best musicians in town – members of Booker T. and The MGs, The Memphis Boys and his own TCB band to create the ultimate band and he searched for fresh new material that would reflect his new path. Such songs as "I Got A Feelin' In My Body" and "Loving Arms" demonstrate an artist looking to broaden his palette and his reach.

The Stax material has never been positioned as a whole body of work – but is an amazing chapter of Elvis' career. With the Elvis At Stax release, all of this material is collected for the first time. Along with some of the funky outtakes, it creates a fresh new package that, while it doesn't have the known hits, tells a great story.

Bread - Bread

Founded by David Gates and James Griffin, Bread was one of the most popular Pop groups of the early '70s.  The band proved on their eponymous debut album (1969) that they were excellent songwriters and craftsmen of their instruments (keys and guitar, respectively).

Although the album did not contain a hit single at the time of release ( "It Don't Matter To Me" later became a hit but only after their second album release On The Waters) it set the course for the group's fame and fortune. Ironic fact: the album's cover art would prove to be somewhat of an omen regarding the relationship of Gates & Griffin – they later split several times, citing 'artistic ownership' feuds. 180 gram audiophile vinyl

Mink Deville - Coup De Grace

Coup De Grace (1981) was the zenith of Mink DeVille's career. Working together with famed producer Jack Nitzsche proved to be a wise step: his influence on its sound made the album a timeless classic.

Nitzsche's CV includes work for Phil Spector (arranging hits for The Ronettes & The Crystals), recording and producing Tim Buckley, Marianne Faithfull, Neil Young, Buffalo Springfield and others.

Willy DeVille's unique balladeering style is perfectly framed in a timeless Rock & Roll fashion, not unlike Springsteen but with a soulful twist. Combining Punk, Rock, New Wave, '50s R&B and Doo-Wop, Mink DeVille's unique sound has beautifully blossomed on Coup De Grace and will likely live on as their best album. 180 gram audiophile vinyl

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 29, 2013

DEAR JERRY: It seems there are many hit records with titles inspired by common everyday phrases. A few that come to mind are "How the Time Flies" (Jerry Wallace); "Who Cares" (Fats Domino); Turn Around" (Dick and DeeDee); "Call Me" (Blondie); "Tell Me Why (Bobby Vinton);" and, in particular, "Return to Sender" (Elvis). In Presley's song, those three words are followed by these two: "address unknown."

Has there ever been a recording titled "Address Unknown," whether it be a hit or not?
—Al Clifton, Hammond, Ind.

DEAR AL: My research turns up far more pieces of U.S. mail with "Address Unknown" than record labels, but there are some with that title, and they don't all play the same song.

Chronologically, here are some examples of "Address Unknown" recordings made between 1939 and 1985:

The original "Address Unknown" is by Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians (Featuring Carmen Lombardo). It came out in June 1939 (Decca 2520), but it was tucked away on the B-side of "Cinderella (Stay in My Arms)." Unfortunately, only the A-side made the charts.

The band's primary vocalist, Carmen Lombardo (Guy's brother), along with John D. Marks and D.L. Hill, wrote "Address Unknown."

The first cover record came out in July, by Red Nichols and His Orchestra (Featuring Marion Redding) (Bluebird 10332), and it too failed to chart.

Next is what would be the only hit version, and it's by the Ink Spots (Decca 2707). Their distinctive rendition topped the charts in November 1939.

Other recordings of the Lombardo-Marks-Hill tune include the Art Van Damme Quartet (1958); Little Jimmy Scott (1958); the Tymes (1964); and the Deep River Quartet (1985).

In 1945, Gene Autry, Denver Darling, and Vaughn Horton, composed a different "Address Unknown," one quickly issued by Gene Autry (Columbia 36840). Later versions are by Hank Snow (1950, re-recorded in 1963), Marty Robbins (1958), and Don Gibson with Los Indios Tabajaras (recorded in 1966, not issued until 1986).

There are still more "Address Unknowns," and each is completely different than the rest:

Roy Acuff (Columbia 20792) (1951); the Baystaters (Capitol 4363) (1960); Johnny & Dorsey Burnette (recorded in 1960, not issued until 1980); and Doug Davidson (Music of America 1003) (1960). Full title is "Letter Returned (Address Unknown)."

There is at least one "Address Unknown" for most of the mainstream genres: big band; small combo; pop and teener male and female singers; R&B; instrumentals; jazz; country; western; group harmony; and even Latin-Brazilian.

Easily the most intriguing of all "Address Unknown" records is a song unique to the Baystaters, a mixed-gender trio with a beautiful blend of voices and instrumentation, similar to the Fleetwoods.

Writing credits for "Address Unknown," and the B-side, "Sing a Little," name Emily Hull, Frank Ventre, and Hector Marchese. It's not a stretch to think these three are also the Baystaters. And how could this bunch not be from Massachusetts, the Bay State?

This is a first-rate recording, perfect for the 1960 music scene, and on a major label (Capitol). So what went wrong?

We do know that Capitol's usually comprehensive list of their latest singles, routinely published in the weekly "New Release Reporter," makes no mention of this record, in 1960 or ever.

It seems no promotional copies were made, and no review copies were sent to any of the trade magazines.

If the existence of a couple of copies were not already known, we would think the quantity made was zero. Regardless, this is apparently the first and last record by the Baystaters.

For about 40 years, every Capitol singles discography simply skipped over No. 4363. Finally, in the 21st century, the mysterious blank has been filled in.

Whether Capitol's reason for disavowing the Baystaters and their music was the result of some legal issues, or just an internal conflict (e.g., RCA Victor's "The Caine Mutiny") is not yet known.

Can we rule out the possibility that their entire shipment of freshly-pressed records ended up "Undeliverable As Addressed," and somehow were never returned to sender?

IZ ZAT SO? Predictably, intrigue and value are directly proportional, and so it is with the Baystaters' "Address Unknown."

Had it become a hit to any extent, its value would likely be about $10.

Now that it's shrouded in mystery, collectors offering upwards of $100 still have an empty space in their file where Capitol 4363 ought to be.

Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

lots of great vinyl, from lots of great sources!:

Jimi Hendrix - Live At Woodstock - Vinyl 3-LP

Live at Woodstock is a posthumous live album by Jimi Hendrix released on July 6, 1999. The album documents Hendrix's performance with his band Gypsy Sun and Rainbows at Woodstock Festival on August 18, 1969. Many of the tracks on this album were released in 1994 on Woodstock. Apart from the cover medley of "Gypsy Woman" with "Aware Of Love" (both songs by The Impressions) and his original, "Mastermind", which were sung by rhythm guitarist Larry Lee, Live at Woodstock contains the full set played by the band. The recording, sound mix and the 1999 remix were completed by Eddie Kramer, who has pointed out that the conditions were primitive; in view of that, the result has been acclaimed, though the radical editing results in the group sound being reduced to a three piece of Hendrix, Cox and Mitchell. Lee, as noted above, and the two percussionists are essentially edited out of the mix. The original recording of the complete performance can be heard on several bootleg releases and the full group is clearly audible, notably on "Foxey Lady" and Voodoo Child (Slight Return), where the volume of the two percussionists and Lee's guitar are noticeably a part of the whole.

Dr. Dog To Release New Album, B-Room, on ANTI- October 1st.

Philadelphia’s Dr. Dog will release their new album entitled B-Room Oct. 1st on Anti-. Showcasing some of their most mature, streamlined and soulful writing to date, the record is the culmination of a complete overhaul of the band’s writing and recording process, which finds them in a new self-built studio, writing songs live in rehearsal, and using the rock solid groove of the band, honed through workmanlike touring, as a powerful compositional tool.

B-Room, in its purest form, is a soul album. It may be obvious as the first track opens with the Gamble and Huff inspired, “The Truth.” But as the album progresses the music continues to take on a soulfulness that is vibrant in its simplicity.  As McMicken put it, “The hallmark of soul music for me is the arrangements are simple rather than virtuosic, and that the sound creates a feeling that is intuitive rather than intellectual.”

The story begins with jackhammers instead of guitars. After ending the lease at home studio “Meth Beach” where they had been headquartered for the past eight years, the musicians took on the
commitment of constructing an entirely new recording space within a now defunct silversmith mill.  As the band’s bassist-vocalist Toby Leaman put it, “The whole process of recording really started with building the studio.”

As the band now understands, making a record is a lot like doing construction. Both require a similar amount of frustration, intensity, and cohesion. By building a space first and releasing all of that emotion, the band was then free to engage in their creative process without the expectation or preconception that they admittedly had brought into other sessions. Recorded primarily in live takes, the songs seamlessly fuse the spontaneity of the band’s live performances with the intricacy of their kaleidoscopic composition. Both Leaman and guitarist Scott McMicken credit their sonic evolution with relying less on the pre-produced demos and more with a reliance on the musicians surrounding them.
