Vinyl Record News & Music Notes

BRYAN FERRY - DON'T STOP THE DANCE - PSYCHEMAGICK / GREG WILSON / SPACE COAST REMIXES (SUPER DELUXE LIMITED EDITION)

FROM THE VINYL FACTORY

Availability: Available to pre-order

Following Todd Terje's incredible 2012 remix of Roxy Music's 'Love Is  The Drug', Bryan Ferry has recruited some of the best producers in the  world to remix his 1985 hit ‘Don’t Stop The Dance’.

Now released  by The Vinyl Factory as a series of three super-deluxe limited   editions of only 1000 copies each - with bespoke screen printed thick  card sleeves housing 180-gram records mastered for vinyl by Noel  Summerville at 3345 Mastering and  crafted on the EMI 1400 in Hayes,  Middlesex.

The track was originally the third single from the  number one album Boys & Girls, and featured long-serving guest  musicians Nile Rodgers, Marcus Miller, Omar Hakim, Andy Newmark and  David Sanborn.

"The recording was done in various studios in  London, New York and Nassau, and the whole process took about two  years," recalls Bryan Ferry. "I  wrote 'Don't Stop The Dance' together  with my co-producer and engineer  Rhett Davies, and I remember the track  originating in some sessions we  did at my home studio in England. We  finally mixed the record with Bob  Clearmountain at The Power Station  studios in New York."

Isaac Ferry hand-picked the producers to Re/Make - Re/Model 'Don't Stop The Dance' in various guises, re-enlisting previous collaborators Todd Terje, Eric Duncan and Greg Wilson, alongside Idjut Boys, Sleazy Mcqueen, Space Coast, Punks Jump Up, and two versions from both Psychemagick and Grasshopper aka in-house keyboard programmer Liam Duggan.

"After  the successful release of 'Olympia Remixes', we decided that my song  'Don't Stop The Dance' should really be revisited by a new generation of  DJs," says Bryan Ferry.

"Since my first solo album in 1973 I've  always tried to reinterpret other people's songs in my own way. So it  has been good to hear 'Don't Stop Dance' in so many different  incarnations. It's fascinating to see how some of the remixes focus on  certain aspects of the song, and some on another...they all take the  track to a variety of interesting places."

3D and the art of Massive Attack

Limited Edition Vinyl Box Set - The Vinyl Factory

"When I was about ten years old, a kid called 3D was painting the streets hard. 3D quit painting and formed the band Massive Attack, which may have been a good thing for him but was a big loss for the city." Banksy (Swindle magazine, 2008)

The Vinyl Factory presents 3D and the art of Massive Attack by Robert del Naja aka 3D - the first book on the visual history of a band who have sold over 11 milliion records worldwide, compiled and designed by 3D using images from a personal archive and original artifacts scanned by the artist for the record.

Robert’s artwork has come to define the iconic style of his band and the book explores their visual history, presenting both familiar and previously unseen work, from his influential graffiti and stencil art in the Wild Bunch-era of the ‘80s to Massive Attack cover designs and paste-ups and paintings. Also included is work made in collaboration with Nick Knight, Tom Hingston, Judy Blame and Michael Nash Associates, as well as unseen photographs documenting Del Naja’s ongoing collaboration with United Visual Artists. And his recent work with filmmaker Adam Curtis.

The 400-page book also features an in-depth interview with the artist, where he describes the development of the band’s artwork and record sleeve designs, as well as offering insight into his processes, and inspirations.

Del Naja’s background as a graffiti artist has shaped his evolving aesthetic, as well as a strong ethos of ‘do it yourself’ creativity. His instincts as an artist were forged in an atmosphere of spontaneity and innovation - from making flyers to throwing warehouse parties - and this way of working informed the first record sleeves he created as 3D.

Inspired by magazine culture and comics, 3D drew on wide-ranging influences, from New York’s hip-hop scene and Japanese graphics, Jean-Michel Basquiat’s cultural juxtapositions to Warhol’s pop imagery, politics and punk.

“I was always told that any artist that wanted to be taken seriously should never paint record sleeves” Robert del Naja

The Vinyl Factory will publish 3D and the art of Massive Attack on 28 October 2013; the hardback book will be priced at £50.

The limited edition will be for sale exclusively from The Vinyl Factory online web shop

A Vault of Vintage Psychedelia

The Strawberry Alarm Clock’s unique sound—full of beautiful, day-glo pop surrounding jagged, fuzzy guitars and organs, among other garage-rock influences—is explored through a number of dreamlike gems contained in these three volumes, all presented as originally issued! Their smash “Incense and Peppermints,” which reached #1 in late 1967 and remained in the Billboard pop chart for 16 weeks, is included on The Best of Strawberry Alarm Clock, and Wake Up...It’s Tomorrow and The World In A Sea Shell contain fan favorites (and ’60s psych gold) like “Love Me Again,” “Sea Shell,” “Barefoot in Baltimore,” “Sit With the Guru,” and many more—all mastered from the stereo UNI reels in definitive 180 gram editions!

Wake Up... It's Tomorrow

Wake Up...It’s Tomorrow, The Strawberry Alarm Clock’s second album, is what many fans consider the most ambitious musical statement of the band’s career. Includes “Tomorrow,” “Sit with the Guru,” and the haunting “Pretty Song from Psych-Out,” theme of the cult-classic film of the same name, on 180 gram vinyl.

The World In A Seashell

More gentle grooves and soaring voices! An adventurous mixture of psychedelia and lush pop, The World In A Sea Shell includes “Love Me Again,” a nod to their earlier, harder sound, plus “Sea Shell,” “Barefoot in Baltimore” and other day-glo psych masterpieces on 180 gram vinyl.

The Best of The Strawberry Alarm Clock

The Best of Strawberry Alarm Clock is a vintage collection from 1970 that includes key tracks from all four of the band’s albums—“Incense and Peppermints” among them—plus the rarely heard non-LP singles “Desiree” and “Starting Out the Day,” now on 180 gram vinyl.

Order your choice or all three at Sundazed!

Wooden Shjips - Back to Land

Wooden Shjips’ rise to prominence from the psychedelic underground to the rock and roll overground has been a steady sojourn. With each consecutive release, the band has found new ways of transforming heady psychedelic rock into minimalist masterpieces, bridging the gap between the woozy freeness of Les Rallizes Denudes and Crazy Horse and the tightly wound simplicity of Suicide and the Velvet Underground. Back To Land, the quartet’s follow-up to West, is the first Wooden Shjips record to be conceived outside of San Francisco. Ripley Johnson and Omar Ahsanuddin moved to Oregon, where the lush climates became a major influence on the songwriting. The band’s scope expanded to include more earthy, grounded tones, such as the acoustic guitar, without abandoning their modernist psych core.

There is an increased brightness to many of the songs on Back To Land, an easiness with which the band has flirted with in the past but never fully realized until now. The nervy urgency of West has evolved into an assured confidence, from the alliterative, interlocking guitar and organ groove of “Ruins” to the languidly compelling guitar solos of “Servants.” The addition of the acoustic guitar to the band’s textural palate is coupled here with some of the most melodically direct songs the band has written.

Still, there are still plenty of signature Shjips songs, with distorted riffs, modal keys, and a steady, crisp drum sound unfolding intensely while the elongated melodic guitar lines drift in and out of the foreground. On Back to Land this energy is captured in clear detail, designed as an immersive experience rather than a passive blasting. Back To Land was laid to tape at Jackpot Recording Studios in Portland by Kendra Lynn and mixed by Larry Crane. It was recorded over an 11-day session, resulting in some of the most detailed and spacious recordings of their career.

Back To Land is a breakthrough record for the Wooden Shjips: nuanced, varied and utterly addictive. The band will be touring extensively in the US and Europe November through February.

This is a pre-order for November 12th street date.  All orders containing Back To Land will ship close to the November 12th street date.

CD version is packaged in a 4 panel mini-LP style gatefold package with high gloss UV printing that is then inserted into a custom die-cut O-Card slipcase.

LP version is pressed on opaque pink vinyl and packaged in a heavy duty old-style tip-on gatefold jacket with an artworked flood on the pocket (ala Neil Young "On the Beach").  The jacket also features high gloss UV printing and is housed in a deluxe die cut slipcase. A free download coupon is included. For a limited time all mailorder customers ordering the vinyl LP edition will receive a bonus 7" featuring two non-album tracks : "Colours" and "These Shadows (Acoustic Version)". The pink vinyl edition is ONLY available through Thrill Jockey mailorder and the band's merch table.

In addition to these deluxe packages ALL mailorder customers who pre-order the CD or LP edition will also receive a free download of the non-album 7" track in advance.  "These Shadows (Acoustic Version)" will be released on ITunes on Sept 16th.  At that time all pre-order customers will begin receiving a complimentary download of the track.

from north of our border, a new record store is branching out!

Press Release:
KOPS RECORDS COMMITS TO FUTURE OF VINYL WITH 2ND LOCATION

At a time when the music industry struggles to monetize music and record stores are either closing or focusing on DVD's and memorabilia, Kops Records is expanding. Toronto's oldest independent record store in business since 1976 on Queen West is opening a second location in the Annex on September 28, 2013.

What sets Kops Records apart from most other record stores is the commitment to the history of recorded music. Time spent in the store most often results in discovering new (or old) music or learning about obsolete recording formats such as Edison wax cylinders from the late 1800's.
Nick and Martin Koppel run the family owned business and its their passion for music of all genres that keep them looking to the future. "Although there have been much anticipated albums re-issued, there are many more that haven't been," says Nick. "The history of recorded music is primarily on vinyl and Kops Records prides itself with presenting and preserving the history of music."

Kops is a leading source of deep roots-based music across all genres with sections dedicated to rock, jazz, hip hop, blues, country, soul, comedy, soundtracks and more including an extensive Canadian collection representing a century of recorded music. In addition to the beloved LPs, the store also stocks 78s and the largest collection of 45s in Canada.

With the new location, Kops will continue their tradition of hosting live performances with a jam space in the basement and a performance space in the garage at the back of the store. Many activities are planned for opening day with performances to be announced soon.

KOPS RECORDS OPENING DAY: Saturday, September 28, 2013 at 592 Bloor West.

Ask Mr. Music by Jerry Osborne

FOR THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 16, 2013

DEAR JERRY: Thanks to the award-winning documentary "Searching for Sugar Man," I discovered Sixto Rodriguez, the Sugar Man many people were trying to find.

Rodriguez, a lifelong downtown Detroit resident, is an amazingly distinctive singer-songwriter who sold millions of albums overseas, yet, until the 2012 film, virtually no one in America ever heard of him.

Now I'm trying to obtain all of his recordings, and I need your help.

I have the soundtrack, with its 14 songs, but how many more are out there?

Unfortunately, in the film's March 6, 1998 Cape Town concert, immediately after "I Wonder," he sings something that is definitely not on the soundtrack. It's also not captioned on the screen, like many of the others. Can you identify it?

Besides that one, and those actually on the soundtrack, what are his other songs? And are they available?
—Luke Murphy, Stevens Point, Wis.

DEAR LUKE: First, the unidentified tune in the film that's not on the soundtrack is "Forget It." Ironically, it seems that's exactly what they did.

Completing your Rodriguez collection is easier than you might have thought, and you can do so without spending hundreds of dollars for his original Sussex LPs.

You'll need Light in the Attic's 2012 reissue of "Cold Fact" (LITA-036). That gives you these 12 tracks originally issued in 1971 on Sussex (SXBS-7000), that now sells in the $400 to $600 range:

"Crucify Your Mind"
"Forget It"
"Gommorah (A Nursery Rhyme)"
"Hate Street Dialogue"
"I Wonder"
"Inner City Blues"
"Jane S. Piddy"
"Like Janis"
"Only Good For Conversation"
"Rich Folks Hoax"
"Sugar Man"
"This Is Not A Song, It's an Outburst: Or, the Establishment Blues"

Also get Light in the Attic's 13-track repackage of "Coming from Reality" (LITA-038). With this 2009 edition you have the 10 songs issued in 1972 on the second, and less pricey ($150), Sussex LP (SXBS-7012), plus three bonus cuts:

"A Most Disgusting Song"
"Can't Get Away" (Bonus)
"Cause"
"Climb Up on My Music"
"Halfway Up the Stairs"
"Heikki's Suburbia Bus Tour"
"I Think of You"
"I'll Slip Away" (Bonus)
"It Started Out So Nice"
"Sandrevan Lullaby-Lifestyles"
"Silver Word"
"Street Boy" (Bonus)
"To Whom It May Concern"

You should be able to pick up the two Light in the Attic albums for $20 to $40 each, and both are audiophile 180-gram vinyl.

With those two, you'll have all 15 songs from the film, including "Forget It," along with eight others from the two Sussex collections.

The stray in the herd is "I'll Slip Away," the A-side of a 1967 single (Impact 1031) that is credited to Rod Riguez. The flip is "You'd Like to Admit It," a tune not yet found on any album.

Having the complete works of Rodriguez — just 26 songs, all written by him — is easily accomplished, and not too costly, at least for now. For this tally, more than one version of a song (e.g., studio/live) is still counted as just one.

As for collecting the body of his work, the soundtrack (Light in the Attic 289) is unnecessary. All of those tunes are also on the two LITA albums.

The movie that won the Oscar for Best Documentary (2012) in the U.S. was similarly honored with the comparable award in virtually every country where such a prize exists. It literally crushed the competition.

Referring to "Searching for Sugar Man" merely as an award-winning documentary is like calling the Grand Canyon a gully.

IZ ZAT SO? From 1967 through 1971, Sixto Rodriguez had only three singles and two LPs. Though he continued to write songs, and even record a few, as of now there are no new recordings available.

In 2008, Light in the Attic began repackaging his 1960s and '70s work in the U.S., while other labels licensed his material overseas, usually with much greater success. In some countries, the result has been gold and platinum record awards.

On those occasions when he traveled from Detroit to South Africa and Australia, he played venues with 5,000 to 20,000 seats, and each performance was completely sold-out.

The wild reaction he received from those frenzied crowds, even screaming and applauding while he just stood there waiting to sing, can only be likened to Elvis and the Beatles.

After such a tour, Rodriguez would return to his inner-city home half a world away where he could walk the streets and not be recognized. One would think "Searching for Sugar Man" would have changed that.

Oh yeah, he also gave his earnings from those tours to his family and friends.
